Climate warming and land-use change are reshuffling the distribution of wild organisms on a global scale. Some species may expand their ranges and colonize new regions, which may greatly affect ecological interactions among pre-existing species and colonizers. In the last decades, such processes have originated a unique condition of sympatry among three Eurasian small Falco species (common kestrel F. tinnunculus, lesser kestrel F. naumanni, red-footed falcon F. vespertinus) in the intensively cultivated farmland habitats of the Po Plain (Northern Italy). This provides an excellent opportunity to investigate patterns of spatial niche overlap during the initial phases of the establishment of sympatry. To investigate spatial niche overlap of the three falcon species, we relied on Environmental Niche Models (ENMs) based on widespread breeding occurrence data obtained through field surveys and citizen science programs (during the 2018–2020 period). ENMs were based on bioclimatic and land-use variables in an ensemble modelling framework. We estimated species-specific relative contributions of each climatic and land-use variable and its response curves effect. Eventually, we generated spatial correlation maps of the potential species’ distributions to derive spatially-explicit predictions of potential co-occurrence areas among the three species. Overall, eco-climatic determinants of the distribution of lesser kestrel and red-footed falcon were similar, resulting in a strong association with intensive arable lands and dry continental climate. Consistently, we found a high spatial correlation between the suitability maps of the two species, with highly suitable areas located in the Central-Eastern area of the Po Plain, corresponding to the core range of both species. Conversely, the common kestrel emerged as a habitat generalist and was widely distributed throughout the Po Plain. Our findings suggest that the recent sympatry between lesser kestrels and red-footed falcons in the Po Plain may promote ecological interactions and intra-guild competition.

Wild bovids provide important ecosystem functions as seed dispersers and vegetation modifiers. Five wild bovids remain in Thailand: gaur ( Bos gaurus ), banteng ( Bos javanicus ), wild water buffalo ( Bubalus arnee ), mainland serow ( Capricornis sumatraensis ) and Chinese goral ( Naemorhedus griseus ). Their populations and habitats have declined substantially and become fragmented by land-use change. We use ecological niche models to quantify how much potential suitable habitat for these species remains within protected areas in Asia and then specifically Thailand. We combined species occurrence data from several sources (e.g. mainly camera traps and direct observation) with environmental variables and species-specific and single, large accessible areas in ensemble models to generate suitability maps, using out-of-sample predictions to validate model performance against new independent data. Gaur, banteng and buffalo models showed reasonable model accuracy throughout the entire distribution (greater than or equal to 62%) and in Thailand (greater than or equal to 80%), whereas serow and goral models performed poorly for the entire distribution and in Thailand, though 5 km movement buffers markedly improved the performance for serow. Large suitable areas were identified in Thailand and India for gaur, Cambodia and Thailand for banteng and India for buffalo. Although many studies highlighted the potential of COVID-19 to reshape existing models of wildlife management, empirical research on this topic has been scarce, particularly in Europe. We investigated the potential of COVID-19 pandemic to accelerate the ongoing decline in an aging population of recreational hunters in Italy. Namely, we modelled spatiotemporal trends between 2011 and 2021 in the number of recreational hunters in 50 Italian provinces with a varying incidence of COVID-19, and temporally delayed waves of infection. Compared to projections from 2011-2019 data, we detected a lower number of hunters who enrolled for the hunting season, both in 2020 (14 provinces) and in 2021 (15 provinces). The provinces with the highest incidence of COVID-19 in the Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna regions were also those experiencing the most marked decrease in hunting participation. Our findings revealed that a wildlife management system based on recreational hunting can be rapidly destabilized by epidemics and their associated public health measures, particularly when the average age of hunters is high, like in Italy. Considered the high incidence attained by COVID-19 in many European countries, where hunters are pivotal for the management of large ungulates and where they were already declining before the pandemic, our findings call for further large-scale research about the impact of COVID-19 on hunting participation., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Cerri et al. Background: Assessment of the key preferred quality traits in pounded yam, a popularly consumed yam food product in West Africa, is often done through sensory evaluation. Such assessment is time-consuming and results may be biased. Therefore, there is a need to develop objective, high-throughput methods to predict the quality of consumer-preferred traits in pounded yam. This study focused on how key quality traits in pounded yam proposed to yam breeders were determined, measured by biophysical and biochemical methods, in order to shorten the breeding selection cycle through adoption of these methods by breeders., Results: Consumer tests and sensory quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) validated that preferred priority quality traits in pounded yam were related to textural quality (smooth, stretchable, moldable, slightly sticky and moderately hard) and color (white, cream or light yellow). There were significant correlations between sensory textural quality attributes cohesiveness/moldability, hardness, and adhesiveness/stickiness, with textural quality measurements from instrumental texture profile analysis (TPA). Color measurement parameters (L*, a*, and b*) with chromameter agreed with that of sensory evaluation and can replace the sensory panel approach. The smoothness (R 2  = 1.00), stickiness (R 2  = 1.00), stretchability (R 2  = 1.00), hardness (R 2  = 0.99), and moldability (R 2  = 0.53) of pounded yam samples can be predicted by the starch, amylose, and protein contents of yam tubers estimated by near-infrared spectroscopy., Conclusion: TPA and Hunter colorimeter can be used as medium-high throughput methods to evaluate the textural quality and color of pounded yam in place of the sensory panelists. © 2023 The Authors. Novel pressures derived from urbanisation can alter native habitats and ultimately impact wildlife. Coping with such human-driven changes might induce shifts in species phenotypic traits, such as physiological responses to anthropogenic stressors. Preadaptation to face those challenges has been suggested to favour settlement and spread of invasive alien species in urbanised areas which, consequently, might respond differently than ecologically similar native species to stressors posed by urbanisation. The activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the subsequent release of glucocorticoids (GCs) has been suggested to mediate responses to anthropogenic disturbance in vertebrates. Furthermore, intraspecific competition, in conjunction with stressors related to urbanisation, might affect invasive and native species physiological stress responses differently. Using a parallel pseudo-experimental study system we measured faecal glucocorticoid metabolite (FGM) concentrations of the native Eurasian red squirrel and the invasive alien Eastern grey squirrel along a rural-urban gradient and in relation to conspecific density. The two species responded differently to challenges posed by the synergic effect of urbanisation and intraspecific competition. Association of FGMs and conspecific density in native red squirrels varied between rural and suburban sites, potentially depending on differential HPA axis responses. In urban sites, this relationship did not differ significantly from that in rural and suburban ones. Conversely, invasive grey squirrels' FGMs did not vary in relation to conspecific density, nor differed along the rural-urban gradient. Improving knowledge about native and competing invasive species' physiological responses to anthropogenic stressors can support conservation strategies in habitats altered by man. The wolf (Canis lupus) is among the most controversial of wildlife species. Abundance estimates are required to inform public debate and policy decisions, but obtaining them at biologically relevant scales is challenging. We developed a system for comprehensive population estimation across the Italian alpine region (100,000 km 2 ), involving 1513 trained operators representing 160 institutions. This extensive network allowed for coordinated genetic sample collection and landscape-level spatial capture-recapture analyses that transcended administrative boundaries to produce the first estimates of key parameters for wolf population status assessment. Wolf abundance was estimated at 952 individuals (95% credible interval 816-1120) and 135 reproductive units (i.e., packs) (95% credible interval 112-165). We also estimated that mature individuals accounted for 33-45% of the entire population. The monitoring effort was spatially estimated thereby overcoming an important limitation of citizen science data. Assessing the behavioural responses of floating wolves to human presence is crucial for investigating the chance of wolf populations expanding into urbanised landscapes. We studied the movement ecology of three rehabilitated wolves in a highly human-dominated landscape (Po Plain, Italy) to explore wolf's plasticity amid widespread human pressure. To reach this aim, we estimated individual 95% utilisation distributions (UD) after the release and inspected both 95% UDs and net squared displacements to identify individual movement patterns; tested for differences in movement patterns during day and night; and analysed the selection of resting sites during dispersal movement in a highly human-altered environment. Both the 95% UDs and step lengths were smaller for wolves settling in suitable areas than for those settling in more urbanised areas. All wolves exhibited strong temporal segregation with humans during all movement phases, particularly while dispersing across highly urbanised areas. Main roads and proximity to built-up areas were shown to limit wolves' dispersal, whereas small-wooded patches that provide shelter during rest facilitated long-distance movements. This study provides important insights into wolf movement and settling in urban and peri-urban areas, providing critical knowledge to promote human-carnivore coexistence.

Tropical forests comprise a critically impacted habitat, and it is known that altered forests host a lower diversity of mammal communities. In this study, we investigated the mammal communities of two areas in Myanmar with similar environmental conditions but with great differences in habitat degradation and human disturbance. The main goal was to understand the status and composition of these communities in an understudied area like Myanmar at a broad scale. Using camera trap data from a three-year-long campaign and hierarchical occupancy models with a Bayesian formulation, we evaluated the biodiversity level (species richness) and different ecosystem functions (diet and body mass), as well as the occupancy values of single species as a proxy for population density. We found a lower mammal diversity in the disturbed area, with a significantly lower number of carnivores and herbivores species. Interestingly, the area did not show alteration in its functional composition. Almost all the specific roles in the community were present except for apex predators, thus suggesting that the effects of human disturbance are mainly effecting the communities highest levels. Furthermore, two species showed significantly lower occupancies in the disturbed area during all the monitoring campaigns: one with a strong pressure for bushmeat consumption and a vulnerable carnivore threatened by illegal wildlife trade.

In the present work, a photopolymerized urethane-based poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogel is applied as a porous scaffold material using indirect solid freeform fabrication (SFF). This approach combines the benefits of SFF with a large freedom in material selection and applicable concentration ranges. A sacrificial 3D poly(ε-caprolactone) structure is generated using fused deposition modeling and used as template to produce hydrogel scaffolds. By changing the template plotting parameters, the scaffold channel sizes vary from 280 to 360 μm, and the strut diameters from 340 to 400 μm. This enables the production of scaffolds with tunable mechanical properties, characterized by an average hardness ranging from 9 to 43 N and from 1 to 6 N for dry and hydrated scaffolds, respectively. Experiments using mouse calvaria preosteoblasts indicate that a gelatin methacrylamide coating of the scaffolds results in an increased cell adhesion and proliferation with improved cell morphology., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. 2-Acetyldimedone and 12 related compounds were employed as UV-active pre-column derivatizing agents for amino acids. Direct enantioseparation of the products was achieved using chiral anion exchanger stationary phases in polar-organic mobile phase mode. Under basic conditions, the reagents´ cyclic β-tricarbonyl motifs can give rise to exo- and endocyclic enols through tautomerization. However, with primary amines (proteinogenic and unusual amino acids, aminosulfonic and aminophosphonic acids), we exclusively observed the formation of exocyclic enamine-type products. Reaction yields depended strongly on the 2-acyl modification of the reagent; in particular, we observed a significant decrease when electronegative or sterically demanding substituents were present in α-position to the exocyclic carbonyl group. In addition to improving UV detectability of the products, the introduction of this protective group facilitated successful enantiomer separations of the amino acid derivatives on Cinchona-based chiral anion exchangers. Particularly high enantiomer selectivity was observed in combination with stationary phases bearing a new variation of selectors with π-acidic (electron-poor) bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl groups. No racemization of the analytes occurred at any stage of the analytical method including the deprotection, which was achieved with hydrazine.

We consider here a classical model, consisting of D_{2h}-symmetric particles in a three-dimensional simple-cubic lattice; the pair potential is isotropic in orientation space, and restricted to nearest neighbors. The simplest potential model is written in terms of the squares of the scalar products between unit vectors describing the three interacting arms of the molecules, as proposed in previous literature. Two predominant antinematic couplings of equal strength (+1) are perturbed by a comparatively weaker calamitic one, parameterized by a coupling constant -z ranging in [-1,0]. This choice rules out thermodynamically stable phases endowed with macroscopic biaxiality. The antinematic terms favor states with the corresponding molecular axes mutually orthogonal. Although the low-temperature phase of the special case with null calamitic term (PP0) is uniaxial and antinematically ordered, in the general case presented here both Monte Carlo and molecular-field approaches show that, for z close to zero, the models exhibit a low-temperature uniaxial nematic phase, followed by an antinematic one, and finally by the orientationally disordered one. On the other hand, for sufficiently large values of z, we only find evidence of uniaxial calamitic behavior, as expected by following the limiting cases.

We address here a special, extreme case of the quadratic pair interaction potential between classical, D(2h)-symmetric particles (the generalized Straley model) on a three-dimensional simple cubic lattice. The model involves predominant antinematic couplings and it has been studied by Monte Carlo simulation and a molecular field treatment. The obtained results show a second-order transition between the isotropic phase and the low-temperature one, exhibiting uniaxial antinematic order.

The existence of uniaxial liquid crystals comprising polar molecules, with all the dipoles aligned in a parallel pattern, is classically ruled out. Generally, there are two different avenues to a mean-field theory for liquid crystals: one is based on short-range, repulsive, steric forces, and the other is based on long-range, globally attractive, dispersion forces. Purely polar steric interactions have been shown to have the potential of inducing unexpected orientationally ordered states. In real molecules, anisotropies both in shape and in polarizability coexist; it has been shown that dispersion forces interaction can be combined with hard-core repulsion in a formal theory, based on a steric tensor. Starting from this, we build an interaction Hamiltonian featuring the average electric dipolar energy exchanged between molecules with the same excluded region. Under the assumption that the molecular shape is spheroidal, we propose a mean-field model for polar nematic liquid crystals which can exhibit both uniaxial and biaxial polar phases. By means of a numerical bifurcation analysis, we discuss the stability of the equilibrium against the choice of two model parameters, one describing the degree of molecular shape biaxiality and the other describing the relative orientation of the electric dipole within each molecule. We find only uniaxial stable phases, which are effectively characterized by a single scalar order parameter.

Within the general quadrupolar model for biaxial nematic liquid crystals, whose potential of mean torque extends that in the Maier-Saupe theory with two extra interaction terms, we propose a quantitative criterion to identify the dominant biaxial interaction. We show that the ratio of the biaxial-to-uniaxial and uniaxial-to-isotropic transition temperatures is almost independent of one interaction parameter, thus indicating the other as dominant. We also show that there is a significant mismatch between the principal orientational order parameters predicted by the theory and those measured for the biaxial phase of a tetrapode.

We consider the effect of shape polarity in the excluded-volume interaction between V -shaped polar particles in orientationally ordered phases. We show that the polar component of the steric interaction between these polar particles, large enough in two space dimensions, can also become important in three space dimensions. Unexpectedly, polar steric interactions, up to now neglected, favor an "antiparallel" pair binding, which may be the building block of orientationally ordered phases for polar particles. An antiferromorphic smectic ordering, which is also antiferroelectric, could further be attained at high enough density by the same mechanism.

Over the last few years, renewed interest has been raised by the simplified general interaction models proposed by Straley for mesogenic molecules possessing the D{2h} symmetry and capable of producing biaxial nematic order. It has already been shown that, in the presence of certain special symmetries, just two out of the four order parameters that are in general necessary, suffice for the description of a biaxial phase. For some other range of parameters, these reducing symmetries do not hold, and, moreover, a mean-field treatment has to be suitably changed into a minimax strategy, still producing a transition to a low-temperature biaxial phase. Upon studying the general parameter range, we identify as a common feature the behavior of a uniaxial order parameter, attaining a local minimum at the biaxial-to-uniaxial transition temperature, and recognizably increasing away from it. This finding is confirmed by a Monte Carlo simulation.

We study a class of quadratic Hamiltonians which describe both fully attractive and partly repulsive molecular interactions, characteristic of biaxial liquid crystal molecules. To treat the partly repulsive interactions we establish a minimax principle for the associated mean-field free energy. We show that the phase diagram described by Sonnet [Phys. Rev. E 67, 061701 (2003)] is universal. Our predictions are in good agreement with the recent observations on both V-shaped and tetrapodal molecules.

We employ a continuum model to compute both torque and force transmitted through a thin twist cell filled with a nematic liquid crystal and bounded by flat plates with anchorings at right angles. The transmitted torque vanishes at the order reconstruction threshold when the cell thickness is comparable with the biaxial coherence length. At the same point, the force diagram exhibits an angular point which disappears above a critical twist mismatch. Both torque and force diagrams against the cell's thickness fail to be monotonic when the total twist is near pi/2 .

Within the Landau-de Gennes theory of liquid crystals, we study the equilibrium configurations of a nematic cell with twist boundary conditions. Under the assumption that the order tensor Q be uniaxial on both bounding plates, we find three separate classes of solutions, one of which contains the absolute energy minimizer, a twistlike solution that exists for all values of the distance d between the plates. The solutions in the remaining two classes exist only if d exceeds a critical value d(c). One class consists of metastable, twistlike solutions, while the other consists of unstable, exchangelike solutions, where the eigenvalues of Q are exchanged across the cell. When d=d(c), the metastable solution relaxes back to the absolute energy minimizer, undergoing an order reconstruction somewhere within the cell. The critical distance d(c) equals, in general, a few biaxial coherence lengths. This scenario applies to all the values of the boundary twist but pi/2, which thus appears as a very special case, though it is the one more studied in the literature. In fact, when the directors prescribed on the two plates are at right angles, two symmetric twistlike solutions merge continuously into an exchangelike solution at the critical value of d where the latter becomes unstable. Our analysis shows how the classical bifurcation associated with this phenomenon is unfolded by perturbing the boundary conditions.

We study the static, long-range interactions of inclusions embedded in lipid membranes. By using a two-dimensional model, we are able to determine explicitly the closed equilibrium shape of the membrane for any value of the distance between the inclusions; our results show that these shapes cannot be obtained by linearizing the equilibrium equations near a referential shape. Moreover, by computing the membrane-mediated force between the inclusions in given static conditions, we also detect the effects on the interactions due to the curvature and the closed geometry of the membrane.

Inclusions embedded in lipid membranes undergo a mediated force, due to the tendency of the membrane to relax its excess of elastic energy. In this paper we determine the exact shape of a two-dimensional vesicle hosting two different inclusions, and we analyse how the inclusion conformation influences the mediated interaction. We find non-trivial equilibrium configurations for the inclusions along the hosting membrane, and we derive the complete phase diagram of the mediated interaction. In particular, we find a non-vanishing mediated force even when the distance between the inclusions is much greater than their size. Our model can be applied to describe the mediated interactions of parallel, elongated inclusions embedded in three-dimensional membranes.

It was studied the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) among 228 women with lesions of uterine cervix attending the Ofir Loiola Institute, in Belem, Para, from March 1992 to May 1996. Histopathological examination was performed with all cervical biopsy samples obtained from these patients. In addition, specimens were analysed by both polimerase chain reaction and dot-blot hybridization to detect HPV DNA. The patients were assigned to three groups, according to the diagnosis made by histopathology, as follows: A, including 155 women suffering from invasive epidermoid carcinoma or adenocarcinoma; B, 54 patients having either cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade II or III; and C, involving 19 women with chronic cervicitis. The prevalence rates of HPV in groups A, B and C were 70.3%, 63% and 36.8% respectively. HPV 16 accounted for 60.4% and 54.5% of types identified in groups A and B, respectively. Altogether HPV types 16, 18 and 33 were detected in 71.4% of positive patients belonging to group C.

Introduction: The multileaf collimator (MLC) now commercially available as an integral or optional retrofit component of linear accelerator heads, permitting to shield automatically irregular fields by computerized movements of multiple tungsten leaves. In the present paper we discuss the main characteristics of different MLC versions, MLC dosimetric drawbacks and the clinical fields where the MLC could he widely used., Materials and Methods: Since February, 1995, we have studied the dosimetric characteristics and clinical implications of a multileaf collimator of a Clinac 2100 C/D linear accelerator used to replace conventional low melting alloy blocks. The scalloping effect of isodoses and the effective penumbra produced by the multileaf collimator in an irregular field were analyzed accurately. Secondly, radiation leakage through tungsten leaves was measured and compared with the values of low melting alloy blocks. Finally, the MLC was extensively used in clinical practice for the radiotherapy of different tumors., Results: Different dosimetric steps were followed to obtain the monitor units/dose ratio. Our single MLC-shielded irregular fields measurements also showed several physical and dosimetric disadvantages related to wider effective penumbra than with conventional shielding when the angle between field margin and the normal to the direction of leaf travel is 45 degrees. In clinical practice, the MLC can be widely used for the conformal radiotherapy of pelvic and thoracic tumors. Conventional low melting alloy blocks should be replaced with MLC for radiotherapy of selected brain and head and neck cancers., Discussion: The current use of a multileaf collimator improves both the accuracy and the effectiveness of radiation therapy and reduces the time for every treatment dose, which potentially increases the number of patients treated every day. The multileaf collimator is presently an important technical tool either to replace conventional shielding for static conformational radiotherapy or to administer 3D-planned dynamic radiotherapy.
