We have developed, at the SPARC test facility, a procedure for a real time self-amplified spontaneous emission free electron laser (FEL) device performance control. We describe an actual FEL, including electron and optical beam transport, through a set of analytical formulas, allowing a fast and reliable on-line “simulation” of the experiment. The system is designed in such a way that the characteristics of the transport elements and the laser intensity are measured and adjusted, via a real time computation, during the experimental run, to obtain an on-line feedback of the laser performances. The detail of the procedure and the relevant experimental results are discussed.

SPARC (acronym of “Sorgente Pulsata ed Amplificata di Radiazione Coerente”, i.e. Pulsed and Amplified Source of Coherent Radiation) is a single pass free-electron laser designed to obtain high gain amplification at a radiation wavelength of 500 nm. Self-amplified spontaneous emission has been observed driving the amplifier with the high-brightness beam of the SPARC linac. We report measurements of energy, spectra, and exponential gain. Experimental results are compared with simulations from several numerical codes.

On the wake of the results obtained so far at the SPARC_LAB test-facility at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (Italy), we are currently investigating the possibility to design and build a new multi-disciplinary user-facility, equipped with a soft X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a ∼ 1 GeV high brightness linac based on plasma accelerator modules. This design study is performed in synergy with the EuPRAXIA design study. In this paper we report about the recent progresses in the on going design study of the new facility. This paper describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of RUDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity "particles factory", based on a combination of high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linacs and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. [RIDE is also supposed to be realized in subsequent stages of development depending on the assigned priorities. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

SPARC-X is a two branch project consisting in the SPARC test facility dedicated to the development and test of critical subsystems such as high brightness photoinjector and a modular expandable undulator for SASE-FEL experiments at 500 nm with seeding, and the SPARK facility aiming at generation of high brilliance coherent radiation in the 1.5-13 nm range, based on the achieved expertise. The projects are supported by MIUR (Research Department of Italian Government) and Regione Lazio. SPARC has completed the commissioning phase of the photoinjector in November 2006. The achieved experimental results are here summarized together with the status of the second phase commissioning plans. The SPARK project is based on the generation of ultra high peak brightness electron beams at the energy of 1 and 2 GeV generating radiation in the 1.5-13 nm range. The construction is at the moment planned in two steps starting with a 1 GeV Linac. The project layout including both RF-compression and magnetic chicane techniques has been studied.

The technique for producing and measuring few tens of femtosecond electron beams, and the consequent generation of few tens femtoseconds single spike FEL radiation pulses at SPARC_LAB is presented. The undulator has been used in the double role of radiation source and diagnostic tool for the characterization of the electron beam. The connection between the electron bunch length and the radiation bandwidth is analyzed.

Free electron lasers operating with two colors are promising devices for applications. The relevant modelization has provided a good understanding of the underlying physics. In this paper we present an analysis of the experimental results obtained at SPARC-LAB concerning seeded two-colors free electron laser (FEL) operation. The use of an ad hoc developed semi-analytical model based on the small-signal FEL integral equation reproduces most of the observed phenomenology. The paper discusses the reliability of the proposed method, the range of validity and its possible improvement. © 2016, American Physical Society. All rights reserved.

A short period undulator (1.4 cm) has been designed for the SPARC-FEL test facility and has been realized in collaboration with KYMA Srl. It has been installed on the undulator line at SPARC. The undulator, operating in a delta like mode, has been used as radiator in a segmented configuration. The first stage being provided by the five undulators of the SPARC FEL source "old" chain, with period 2.8 cm. The KYMA undulator has a quatrefoil structure, a high magnetic field homogeneity and focuses both in vertical and radial directions. The two sections, namely the bunching and radiating parts, are arranged in such a way that the second is adjusted on a harmonic of the first. Laser action occurring in the second part, is due to the bunching acquired in the first. Simulations of the temporal and spectral profiles in different electron beam operating conditions are reported, as well as the evolution of the longitudinal phase space. The agreement with the experimental results is discussed The importance of this experiment is at least threefold: 1) It proves that the segmented undulator can successfully be operated 2) It proves that the laser emission in the last undulator is entirely due to the bunching mechanism, being no second harmonic signal present in the first segment 3) Encourages various improvements of the configuration itself, as e.g. the use of a further undulator with variable magnetic field configuration in order to obtain a laser field with adjustable polarization. © 2015 SPIE.

FELs based on SASE are believed to be powerful tools to explore the frontiers of basic sciences, from physics to chemistry to biology. Intense R&D programs have started in the USA and Europe in order to understand the SASE physics and to prove the feasibility of these sources. The allocation of considerable resources in the Italian National Research Plan (PNR) brought about the formation of a CNR–ENEA–INFN–University of Roma “Tor Vergata” study group. A conceptual design study has been developed and possible schemes for linac sources have been investigated, leading to the SPARX proposal. We report in this paper the results of a preliminary start to end simulation concerning one option we are considering based on an S-band normal conducting linac with high-brightness photoinjector integrated in an RF compressor.

We present the experimental evidence of the generation of coherent and statistically stable two-color free-electron laser radiation obtained by seeding an electron beam double peaked in energy with a laser pulse single spiked in frequency. The radiation presents two neat spectral lines, with time delay, frequency separation, and relative intensity that can be accurately controlled. The analysis of the emitted radiation shows a temporal coherence and a shot-to-shot regularity in frequency significantly enhanced with respect to the self-amplified spontaneous emission. © 2015 American Physical Society. © 2015 American Physical Society.

The two-dimensional single shot transverse coherence of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission of the SPARC-LAB Free-Electron Laser was measured through the statistical analysis of a speckle field produced by heterodyning the radiation beam with a huge number of reference waves, scattered by a suspension of particles. In this paper we report the measurements and the evaluation of the transverse coherence along the SPARC-LAB undulator modules. The measure method was demonstrated to be precise and robust, it does not require any a priori assumptions and can be implemented over a wide range of wavelengths, from the optical radiation to the x-rays.

The FEL-SPARC operation with two bunches at different energies has been characterized using different tools. The effect of the e-beam matching on the SASE operation has been explored by controlling the transport with an ad hoc developed control system, allowing either the transport in matching conditions and in different configurations. Since the two bunches have, at the entrance of the undulator, different phase space characteristics we used this effect as a knob to enhance or suppress one or the other FEL mode. We investigated the effect of seeding on both frequencies and observed beating waves, furthermore we observed effects of intra-bunch seeding when only one of the modes is seeded.

We discuss a two-color SASE free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier where the time and energy separation of two separated radiation pulses are controlled by manipulation of the electron beam phase space. Two electron beamlets with adjustable time and energy spacing are generated in an RF photo-injector illuminating the cathode with a comb-like laser pulse followed by RF compression in the linear accelerator. We review the electron beam manipulation technique to generate bunches with time and energy properties suitable for driving two-color FEL radiation. Experimental measurements at the SPARC-LAB facility illustrate the flexibility of the scheme for the generation of two-color FEL spectra. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

In this contribution we will consider some key issues in the design of a three-dimensional (3D) code devoted to the simulation of charged beam transport in RF photoinjectors. The inclusion of space-charge fields is obtained by means of the Lienard-Wiechert retarded potentials. This technique represents an alternative to the self-consistent algorithm of the particles in cells type (PIC) which is extremely expensive in terms of CPU time and memory requirements. We present some preliminary results on the emittance growth induced by off-axis beam injection.

We explore the feasibility conditions of a high-power EEL operating in the VUV region (below 100 nm) and exploiting a coupled oscillator triplicator configuration. A high quality beam from a linac is passed through a EEL oscillator and produces laser radiation at 240 nm. The same beam is extracted and then injected into a second undulator tuned at the third harmonic of the first. The bunching produced in the oscillator allows the start up of the laser signal in the second section which operates as an amplifier. We discuss the dynamical behavior of the system and the dependence of the output power on the characteristics of the e-beam and of the oscillator. The possibility of enhancing the output power, adding a tapered section to the second undulator, is finally analyzed. >

International audience; The injection of a seed in a free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier reduces the saturation length and improves the longitudinal coherence. A cascaded FEL, operating in the high-gain harmonic-generation regime, allows us to extend the beneficial effects of the seed to shorter wavelengths. We report on the first operation of a high-gain harmonic-generation free-electron laser, seeded with harmonics generated in gas. The third harmonics of a Ti:sapphire laser, generated in a gas cell, has been amplified and up-converted to its second harmonic (?rad=133nm) in a FEL cascaded configuration based on a variable number of modulators and radiators. We studied the transition between coherent harmonic generation and superradiant regime, optimizing the laser performances with respect to the number of modulators and radiators. © 2011 American Physical Society.

We report the first experimental implementation of a method based on simultaneous use of an energy chirp in the electron beam and a tapered undulator, for the generation of ultrashort pulses in a self-amplified spontaneous emission mode free-electron laser (SASE FEL). The experiment, performed at the SPARC FEL test facility, demonstrates the possibility of compensating the nominally detrimental effect of the chirp by a proper taper of the undulator gaps. An increase of more than 1 order of magnitude in the pulse energy is observed in comparison to the untapered case, accompanied by FEL spectra where the typical SASE spiking is suppressed.

We explore the feasibility of a high-power FEL operating in the VUV and configured as a coupled oscillator-tripler. The dynamical behaviour of the system and the dependence of the output power on the characteristics of the e-beam are analysed along with the parameters of the oscillator. Finally, the possibility of enhancing the output power by means of appropriate tapering of the second undulator is discussed.

The modification induced in the Optical-Klystron gain by an e-beam with non-negligible energy spread and emittances is analyzed. The analysis is carried out including the inhomogeneous broadening contributions due to the undulators and dispersive parts. The paper deals essentially with the low gain regime, the corrections due to the high gain effects are also discussed.

The waveguide operation of a compact free-electron laser driven by a 2.3-MeV S-band microtron is reported. Power up to 1 kW in 4-\ensuremath{\mu}s pulses has been generated at wavelengths in the range between 2.1 and 2.6 mm. Novel tuning features and temporal characteristics of the emitted radiation, related to the bunched nature of the electron beam and to the dispersive effect of the waveguide, have been observed.

We explore the effect of the e-beam energy distribution on the wiggler-undulator brightness. We show that a powerful tool of analysis is the expansion of a given distribution in series of Gaussians. The convenience of the method both for analytical and numerical purposes is stressed. We discuss two specific examples one of which being the brightness of the recently proposed two frequency undulator. The relevance of the analysis is also discussed within the framework of free electron laser physics.

The helical undulator is an optical element which behaves like a quadrupole (focusing an electron beam both in radial and vertical directions) and like a solenoid. In this paper we explore more deeply the optical properties of such a device and discuss problems like emittance nonconservation due to the interaction of the beam with the helical undulator.

A 50 periods long hybrid permanent magnet undulator is being realized at Ansaldo Ricerche for the LISA FEL experiment of the INFN, Frascati, Italy [1]. An innovative design of the mechanical structure and an electronic control system have been developed in order to accurately position the jaws without requiring very tight mechanical tolerances in the manufacturing of the driving components. The mechanical design has been optimized by performing an accurate structural analysis with the ANSYS code. The control system checks the parallellism between the jaws during the gap variation and restores it automatically. Besides, it changes the current of the correction coils to minimize the dipole field integral at each gap. The security system to guarantee the safe operation of the device is also described.

In this paper we discuss a simple and efficient algoritm which allows reliable solutions of the FEL small-signal high-gain equation, even with the pocket computer. We use the same algorithm to calculate the derivatives of the complex field amplitude, with respect to the detuning parameter. The interest, for these last quantities, is motivated by the crucial role they play in the analysis of the evolution of the FEL transverse and longitudinal modes.

In the framework of the DS4 EUROFEL collaboration, a research work plan at the SPARC free-electron laser (FEL) test facility aiming at the investigation of seeded and cascaded FEL configurations is under implementation. The main goal of the collaboration is to study and test the amplification and the FEL harmonic generation process of an input seed signal obtained as higher-order harmonics generated both in crystals (400 and 266 nm) and in gases (266,160,114 nm). The SPARC FEL can be configured to test several cascaded FEL configurations. In this paper we introduce SPARC and its main parameters and we analyze the superradiant cascade and the harmonic cascade seeded with a signal with the typical time structure of the harmonics generated in gas. The first phase of the SPARX project, now funded by MIUR (Research Department of Italian Government), is an R&D activity focused on developing techniques and critical components for future X-ray FEL facilities. This project is the natural extension of the activities under development within the ongoing SPARC collaboration. The aim is the generation of electron beams characterized by an ultra-high peak brightness with a linear accelerator based on the upgrade of the existing Frascati 800 MeV LINAC and to drive a single pass FEL experiment in the range of 3-5 nm, both in SASE and SEEDED FEL configurations, exploiting the use of superconducting and exotic undulator sections. In this paper we discuss the present status of the collaboration.

The potential use of a free electron laser (FEL) amplifier as a diagnostic tool for relativistic electron beams is investigated. It is in fact shown that a simple relation exists between electron bunch length, energy spread, and the gain of a FEL resonant amplification. It is also discussed how the beam qualities can be derived from an actual experimental configuration. Finally, the possibility of combining the present methods to other techniques, like nondestructive diagnosis with short undulators, is also analyzed.

The brightness of the radiation emitted by an ultrarelativistic e-beam passing through a magnetic undulator is sensitive to the beam quality (namely, energy spread and emittances) and to the undulator characteristics (i.e., possible random errors both in intensity and direction of magnetization, etc.). We analyse the spectrum distortion induced by the above effects and discuss the possibility of using the undulator radiation as a diagnostic tool. Finally, we also study the importance of near-field effects when the radiation is detected unfocussed off-axis and how they can combine with the effects induced by the beam emittances to produce a larger on-axis inhomogeneous broadening.
