1. Training in primary care paediatrics: The role of entrustable professional activities

Abstract: Primary care paediatrics is practiced throughout the countries of Europe with different structures of health care systems and identities of care providers. The best way to guarantee that paediatricians are competently trained and provide high quality care to children and adolescents in primary care is a flexible and comprehensive training program based on practice and demonstration of acquired competencies. Entrustable professional activities represent a significant step toward improving the training and assessment of future healthcare professionals. It may constitute a model that unifies the training standards in primary care and community paediatrics.

Abstract: High-energy (above a few hundred GeV) atmospheric muons are a natural probe for geophysical studies. They can travel through kilometres of rock allowing for a radiography of the density distribution within large structures, like mountains or volcanoes. A collaboration between volcanologists, astroparticle and particle physicists, Tomuvol was formed in 2009 to study tomographic muon imaging of volcanoes with high-resolution, large-scale tracking detectors. We report on two campaigns of measurements at the flank of the Puy de Dôme using glass resistive plate chambers (GRPCs) developed for particle physics, within the CALICE collaboration.

3. Air shower simulation for background estimation in muon tomography of volcanoes

Abstract: One of the main sources of background for the radiography of volcanoes using atmospheric muons comes from the accidental coincidences produced in the muon telescopes by charged particles belonging to the air shower generated by the primary cosmic ray. In order to quantify this background effect, Monte Carlo simulations of the showers and of the detector are developed by the TOMUVOL collaboration. As a first step, the atmospheric showers were simulated and investigated using two Monte Carlo packages, CORSIKA and GEANT4. We compared the results provided by the two programs for the muonic component of vertical proton-induced showers at three energies: 1, 10 and 100 TeV. We found that the spatial distribution and energy spectrum of the muons were in good agreement for the two codes.

Abstract: Muon imaging of volcanoes and of geological structures in general is actively being developed by several groups in the world. It has the potential to provide 3-D density distributions with an accuracy of a few percent. At this stage of development, comparisons with established geophysical methods are useful to validate the method. An experiment has been carried out in 2011 and 2012 on a large trachytic dome, the Puy de Dôme volcano, to perform such a comparison of muon imaging with gravimetric tomography and 2-D electrical resistivity tomography. Here, we present the preliminary results for the last two methods. North–south and east–west resistivity profiles allow us to model the resistivity distribution down to the base of the dome. The modelling of the Bouguer anomaly provides models for the density distribution within the dome that are directly comparable with the results from the muon imaging. Our ultimate goal is to derive a model of the dome using the joint interpretation of all sets of data.

Abstract: An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) moored at the deep-sea ANTARES neutrino telescope site near Toulon, France, measured downward vertical currents of amplitudes up to 0.03 m s−1 in spring 2006. The currents were accompanied by enhanced levels of acoustic reflection by a factor of about 10 and by horizontal currents reaching 0.35 m s−1. These observations coincided with high levels of bioluminescence detected by the telescope. Although during winter 2006 deep dense-water formation occurred in this area, episodes of high levels of suspended particles and large vertical currents continuing into the summer are not direct evidence of this process. It is hypothesized that the main process allowing for particles to be moved across the entire water column (2500 m) within a few days, is local convection, triggered by small-mesoscale phenomena, such as meanders including a bipolar vortex, linked with boundary current instabilities.

Abstract: Deutschland hat eines der besten Gesundheitssysteme der Welt; dies gilt auch fur die medizinische Versorgung von Kindern und Jugendlichen. Aber wie lange noch? Eine uberalterte Arzteschaft bei gleichzeitig stark abnehmender Lebensarbeitszeit droht in wenigen Jahren das Versorgungssystem vollends aus der Balance zu bringen. Mehr Pravention, aber auch die Zunahme chronischer Erkrankungen und soziogener Entwicklungsstorungen erfordern zukunftig mehr denn je mehr Padiater. Daher mussen wir in Deutschland sofort mehr Arzte praxisnah aus- und weiterbilden und anders ausbilden. Dazu brauchen wir einen Ausbildungsabschnitt in der ambulanten Versorgung, denn dort werden die meisten Kinder und Jugendlichen behandelt. Denn ein Student, der heute sein Medizinstudium aufnimmt, wird fruhestens in 11 Jahren als Facharzt zur Verfugung stehen. Bis dahin sind die leistungsstarken Padiater der Babyboomergeneration allerdings langst im Ruhestand. Hochste Zeit also, dass gehandelt wird.

8. International female students’ experiences of navigating the Canadian health care system in a small town setting

Abstract: This pilot study explored the international female (IF) students’ (n = 17) lived experiences of health care accessibility while studying in a small town in Canada. Analysis guided by a phenomenological method resulted in three major themes – (1) after arriving to attend university, IF students experienced challenges in staying healthy, such as learning how Canadian medical insurance works and how to access medical help, (2) IF students developed a support system over time, consisting of their university’s student advisors, host families and friends and (3) as IF students became familiar with living in Canada, they developed self-directed care strategies such as taking care of each other if they became sick. They also became comfortable reaching out through social media to ask questions and connect with others who were also new to Canada. Abstract: The muographic imaging of volcanoes relies on the measured transmittance of the atmospheric muon flux through the target. An important bias affecting the result comes from background contamination mimicking a higher transmittance. The MU-RAY and TOMUVOL collaborations measured independently in 2013 the atmospheric muon flux transmitted through the Puy de Dome volcano using their early prototype detectors, based on plastic scintillators and on Glass Resistive Plate Chambers, respectively. These detectors had three (MU-RAY) or four (TOMUVOL) detection layers of 1 m2 each, tens (MU-RAY) or hundreds (TOMUVOL) of nanosecond time resolution, a few millimeter position resolution, an energy threshold of few hundreds MeV, and no particle identification capabilities. The prototypes were deployed about 1.3 km away from the summit, where they measured, behind rock depths larger than 1000 m, remnant fluxes of 1.83±0.50(syst)±0.07(stat) m−2 d−1 deg−2 (MU-RAY) and 1.95±0.16(syst)±0.05(stat) m−2 d−1 deg−2 (TOMUVOL), that roughly correspond to the expected flux of high-energy atmospheric muons crossing 600 meters water equivalent (mwe) at 18° elevation. This implies that imaging depths larger than 500 mwe from 1 km away using such prototype detectors suffer from an overwhelming background. These measurements confirm that a new generation of detectors with higher momentum threshold, time-of-flight measurement, and/or particle identification is needed. The MU-RAY and TOMUVOL collaborations expect shortly to operate improved detectors, suitable for a robust muographic imaging of kilometer-scale volcanoes.

Abstract: ANTARES is a high-energy neutrino telescope installed in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2475 m. It consists of a three-dimensional array of optical modules, each containing a large photomultiplier tube. A total of 2700 front-end ASICs named Analogue Ring Samplers (ARS) process the phototube signals, measure their arrival time, amplitude and shape as well as perform monitoring and calibration tasks. The ARS chip processes the analogue signals from the optical modules and converts information into digital data. All the information is transmitted to shore through further multiplexing electronics and an optical link. Abstract: full-scale mechanical prototype line was deployed to a depth of 2500 m to test the leak tightness of the electronics containers and the pressure-resistant properties of an electromechanical cable under evaluation for use in the ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope. During a month-long immersion study, line parameter data were taken using miniature autonomous data loggers and shore-based optical time domain reflectometry. Details of the mechanical prototype line, the electromechanical cable and data acquisition are presented. Data taken during the immersion study revealed deficiencies in the pressure resistance of the electromechanical cable terminations at the entry points to the electronics containers. The improvements to the termination, which have been integrated into subsequent detection lines, are discussed. The line also allowed deep-sea acoustic measurements with a prototype hydrophone system. The technical setup of this system is described, and the first results of the data analysis are presented. 12. From the 1950s: The Role of Insight in the Learning of Mathematics

Abstract: The questions of problem-solving and the nature of trial and error, and the insight in arriving at meaningful solutions to thought problems, have been investigated by a rather large number of psychologists. These researchers have been interested in the scientific aspects of the process, in finding out what it is that goes on in the mind or the organism as they solve problems. They are busy with the logical structure and explanation of thought, analysis, insight, etc. They have not, however, been concerned with how to initiate or to direct mental processes that lead to successful solutions. This latter is the task of the educator and the teacher, namely, to apply to the teaching process the findings of psychologists so that they may develop a greater problem-solving ability on the part of their students.

A unit of coordinate geometry of the plane is usually appended. It is a course that is reflected in textbooks prepared by the School Mathematics Study Group and in most commercial textbooks.

Abstract: A search for a diffuse flux of astrophysical muon neutrinos, using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. A (0.83 × 2π) sr sky was monitored for a total of 334 days of equivalent live time. The searched signal corresponds to an excess of events, produced by astrophysical sources, over the expected atmospheric neutrino background. The observed number of events is found compatible with the background expectation. Assuming an E−2 flux spectrum, a 90% c.l. upper limit on the diffuse νμ flux of E2Φ90% = 5.3 × 10−8 GeVcm−2 s−1 sr−1 in the energy range 20 TeV–2.5 PeV is obtained. Other signal models with different energy spectra are also tested and some rejected.

Abstract: The ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope comprises a three-dimensional array of photomultipliers to detect the Cherenkov light induced by upgoing relativistic charged particles originating from neutrino interactions in the vicinity of the detector. The large scattering length of light in the deep sea facilitates an angular resolution of a few tenths of a degree for neutrino energies exceeding 10 TeV. In order to achieve this optimal performance, the time calibration procedures should ensure a relative time calibration between the photomultipliers at the level of ~1 ns. Abstract: A new method for the measurement of the muon flux in the deep-sea ANTARES neutrino telescope and its dependence on the depth is presented. The method is based on the observation of coincidence signals in adjacent storeys of the detector. This yields an energy threshold of about 4 GeV. The main sources of optical background are the decay of 40K and the bioluminescence in the sea water. The 40K background is used to calibrate the efficiency of the photo-multiplier tubes., 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: In this paper we report on the data recorded with the first Antares detector line. The line was deployed on the 14th of February 2006 and was connected to the readout two weeks later. Environmental data for one and a half years of running are shown. Measurements of atmospheric muons from data taken from selected runs during the first six months of operation are presented. Performance figures in terms of time residuals and angular resolution are given. Finally the angular distribution of atmospheric muons is presented and from this the depth profile of the muon intensity is derived., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: ANTARES is a neutrino telescope being deployed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a three dimensional array of photomultiplier tubes that can detect the Cherenkov light induced by charged particles produced in the interactions of neutrinos with the surrounding medium. High angular resolution can be achieved, in particular when a muon is produced, provided that the Cherenkov photons are detected with sufficient timing precision. Considerations of the intrinsic time uncertainties stemming from the transit time spread in the photomultiplier tubes and the mechanism of transmission of light in sea water lead to the conclusion that a relative time accuracy of the order of 0.5 ns is desirable. Accordingly, different time calibration systems have been developed for the ANTARES telescope. In this article, a system based on Optical Beacons, a set of external and well-controlled pulsed light sources located throughout the detector, is described. This calibration system takes into account the optical properties of sea water, which is used as the detection volume of the ANTARES telescope. Abstract: Muon imaging of volcanoes and of geological structures in general is actively being developed by several groups in the world. It has the potential to provide 3-D density distributions with an accuracy of a few percent. At this stage of development, comparisons with established geophysical methods are useful to validate the method. An experiment has been carried out in 2011 and 2012 on a large trachytic dome, the Puy de Dôme volcano, to perform such a comparison of muon imaging with gravimetric tomography and 2-D electrical resistivity tomography. Here, we present the preliminary results for the last two methods. North–south and east–west resistivity profiles allow us to model the resistivity distribution down to the base of the dome. The modelling of the Bouguer anomaly provides models for the density distribution within the dome that are directly comparable with the results from the muon imaging. Our ultimate goal is to derive a model of the dome using the joint interpretation of all sets of data.

Abstract: High-energy (above a few hundred GeV) atmospheric muons are a natural probe for geophysical studies. They can travel through kilometres of rock allowing for a radiography of the density distribution within large structures, like mountains or volcanoes. A collaboration between volcanologists, astroparticle and particle physicists, Tomuvol was formed in 2009 to study tomographic muon imaging of volcanoes with high-resolution, large-scale tracking detectors. We report on two campaigns of measurements at the flank of the Puy de Dôme using glass resistive plate chambers (GRPCs) developed for particle physics, within the CALICE collaboration.

Abstract: One of the main sources of background for the radiography of volcanoes using atmospheric muons comes from the accidental coincidences produced in the muon telescopes by charged particles belonging to the air shower generated by the primary cosmic ray. In order to quantify this background effect, Monte Carlo simulations of the showers and of the detector are developed by the TOMUVOL collaboration. As a first step, the atmospheric showers were simulated and investigated using two Monte Carlo packages, CORSIKA and GEANT4. We compared the results provided by the two programs for the muonic component of vertical proton-induced showers at three energies: 1, 10 and 100 TeV. We found that the spatial distribution and energy spectrum of the muons were in good agreement for the two codes.

Abstract: Calorimeters with a high granularity are a fundamental requirement of the Particle Flow paradigm. This paper focuses on the prototype of a hadron calorimeter with analog readout, consisting of thirty-eight scintillator layers alternating with steel absorber planes. The scintillator plates are finely segmented into tiles individually read out via Silicon Photomultipliers. The presented results are based on data collected with pion beams in the energy range from 8GeV to 100GeV. Abstract: Muon imagery of volcanoes and geological structures are presently and actively developed by several groups in the world. It has the potential to provide a 2-D or 3-D density distribution with an accuracy of a few percent. However, at this stage of the development of the method, comparisons with the results from established geophysical methods are necessary to validate its results. An experiment is currently carried out at the Puy de Dôme volcano involving the concurrent acquisition of muon imagery, electrical resistivity (2-D tomography) and gravity survey. Here, we present the preliminary results for the last two methods. North-south and east-west resistivity sections have been obtained in June 2011 and May 2012. These electric data allow to model of the distribution of the resistivity values down to the base of the dome. The dome and its surroundings are now mapped with more than 300 gravity stations measured during a detailed gravity survey carried out in March and May 2012. The computed Bouguer anomaly can be interpreted by models of the density distribution within the dome. This will be directly comparable with the results from the muon imagery. Our ultimate goal is to derive a model of the dome using the joint interpretation of all the sets of data.

Abstract: A prototype module for an International Linear Collider (ILC) detector was built, installed, and tested between 2006 and 2009 at CERN and Fermilab as part of the CALICE test beam program, in order to study the possibilities of extending energy sampling behind a hadronic calorimeter and to study the possibilities of providing muon tracking. The "tail catcher/muon tracker" (TCMT) is composed of 320 extruded scintillator strips (dimensions 1000 mm x 50 mm x 5 mm) packaged in 16 one-meter square planes interleaved between steel plates. The scintillator strips were read out with wavelength shifting fibers and silicon photomultipliers. The planes were arranged with alternating horizontal and vertical strip orientations. Data were collected for muons and pions in the energy range 6 GeV to 80 GeV. Utilizing data taken in 2006, this paper describes the design and construction of the TCMT, performance characteristics, and a beam-based evaluation of the ability of the TCMT to improve hadronic energy resolution in a prototype ILC detector. For a typical configuration of an ILC detector with a coil situated outside a calorimeter system with a thickness of 5.5 nuclear interaction lengths, a TCMT would improve relative energy resolution by 6-16 % for pions between 20 and 80 GeV., 23 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, submitted to JINST

Abstract: To conduct consultations is the main task of general practitioners. This study concerns itself with consultations, what they are about, how they are structured and how their achievements can be described. In total, 127 recorded consultations were analysed. The 12 recorded general practitioners were themselves involved in the data analysis. The analysis confirms that in comparison to the European average, the Swiss consultation is rather long with a consultation length of 12.5 minutes. 80% of the consultation time is taken up by mere conversation. Per average, three medical topics are discussed within that time. Thus, about three minutes are at disposal per topic. In every consultation we can also find one non-medical topic. The structure of a consultation is complex and changes continually depending on the performed tasks.

Abstract: Application Specific Integrated Circuits, ASICs, similar to those envisaged for the readout electronics of the central calorimeters of detectors for a future lepton collider have been exposed to high-energy electromagnetic showers. A salient feature of these calorimeters is that the readout electronics will be embedded into the calorimeter layers. In this article it is shown that interactions of shower particles in the volume of the readout electronics do not alter the noise pattern of the ASICs. No signal at or above the MIP level has been observed during the exposure. The upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the frequency of fake signals is smaller than 1 × 10 − 5 for a noise threshold of about 60% of a MIP. For ASICs with similar design to those which were tested, it can thus be largely excluded that the embedding of the electronics into the calorimeter layers compromises the performance of the calorimeters.

Abstract: The CALICE collaboration is studying the design of high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for future International Linear Collider detectors. For the hadronic calorimeter, one option is a highly granular sampling calorimeter with steel as absorber and scintillator layers as active material. High granularity is obtained by segmenting the scintillator into small tiles individually read out via silicon photo-multipliers (SiPM). A prototype has been built, consisting of thirty-eight sensitive layers, segmented into about eight thousand channels. In 2007 the prototype was exposed to positrons and hadrons using the CERN SPS beam, covering a wide range of beam energies and incidence angles. The challenge of cell equalization and calibration of such a large number of channels is best validated using electromagnetic processes. Abstract: In a 28-day non-blinded study of 1071 patients with functional dyspeptic symptoms in a general practice setting, 666 presented with mainly typical symptoms of functional dyspepsia and received 5 mg cisapride three times daily, while 405 with predominating symptoms indicative of gastroesophageal reflux received 10 mg cisapride three times daily. On the basis of an anamnestic risk factor analysis for organic lesions, 'low-risk' patients were to be treated directly with cisapride, while for 'high-risk' patients a more thorough gastrointestinal examination was recommended before starting cisapride. Of patients in the dyspepsia group 75% reported a good or excellent response; the corresponding rate was 80% in the reflux group. Low-risk patients in both groups tended to respond better than high-risk patients (mean difference, 11%). Patients and investigators reached identical assessments of response. Concomitant antacids, calcium antagonists, beta-blockers and sedatives did not affect the results, but concomitant NSAIDs reduced the mean improvement rate by 14% (p < 0.01). Adverse effects such as abdominal cramps and loose stools were uncommon (< or = 3.4%).

The interactions of pions in the Si-W calorimeter are therefore confronted with the predictions of various physical models implemented in the GEANT4 simulation framework. Abstract: Cultured pig aortic smooth muscle cells respond to extracellular adenosine by activating adenylate cyclase and by initiating the efflux of cAMP. In the presence of extracellular adenosine, efflux is first order with respect to intracellular cAMP concentration up to at least 125 pmol/10(6) cells. The apparent first-order rate constant for the efflux of cAMP increases in a dose-dependent manner in response to extracellular adenosine or 5-N-ethylcarboxamide adenosine. The EC50 for adenosine for promoting cAMP efflux is 12 microM. For cells stimulated with 5-N-ethylcarboxamide adenosine, the EC50 is 5 microM. When extracellular adenosine is removed, efflux stops abruptly. Cellular cAMP content falls but is still in a range that supports cAMP efflux when agonist is present. Efflux is not affected by H8 (N-[2-(methylamino)ethyl]-5-isoquinolinesulfonamide dihydrochloride), an inhibitor of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. These data suggest that in pig aortic smooth muscle cells, the efficiency of cAMP efflux is regulated by A2 receptor occupancy.

Abstract: In prospective trials in patients with malignant biliary obstruction, it has been reported that Wallstents prolong stent patency, but this does not translate into a significant survival benefit. Compared with prospective trials, however, survival may be different in clinical practice because of differences in patient compliance. We report on a retrospective, long term analysis comparing Wallstents versus plastic stents.Plastic endoprostheses (70 patients) and endoscopic Wallstents (95 patients) were placed in 165 consecutive patients with irresectable, malignant biliary obstruction in a first (1990-91) and second (1992-93) time period. Stent occlusion was treated by plastic stent placement.Patient characteristics were quite comparable in both stent groups. Initial placement of a Wallstent resulted in an increase of median stent patency of the first (10 vs 4 months, p0.001) and second (8 vs 3 months, p0.05) stent, a decrease of additional endoscopic procedures (20 vs 58%, p0.005), an increase of patient compliance reflected by a decrease of patients dying with untreated stent occlusion (9 vs 30%, p0.001), and an increase of survival time (6.5 vs 4 months, p0.05).Initial placement of a Wallstent results in an increase of stent patency of the first and second stent. Duration of stent patency appears to have a determinant effect on patient compliance. Increased stent patency and patient compliance seem to improve survival in clinical practice.

Abstract: Background: Cholylsarcosine, the synthetic conjugate of cholic acid and sarcosine, is resistant to deconjugation-dehydroxylation during enterohepatic cycling in rodents and improves lipid absorption in a canine model of intestinal bile acid deficiency caused by distal intestinal resection. Experiments were performed to define its metabolism and effect on biliary secretion in humans. Methods: The circulating bile acid pool was labeled with [ 14 C]cholylsarcosine, and its turnover rate and biotransformation were determined by sampling bile daily. Cholylsarcosine (or cholyltaurine) was infused into the duodenum for 8 hours to define its effect on bile flow and biliary lipid secretion. Results: Cholylsarcosine was lost rapidly from the enterohepatic circulation with a t12 of 0.5 days. The compound was not biotransformed by hepatic or bacterial enzymes. Cholylsarcosine had choleretic activity similar to that of cholyltaurine but induced more phospholipid and cholesterol secretion than cholyltaurine in four of five subjects. Infusion of cholylsarcosine (or cholyltaurine) at a rate averaging 0.6 μmol · min −1 · kg −1 gave a biliary recovery of 0.2 μmol · min −1 · kg −1 ; this value is the T max for active ileal transport of conjugated bile acids in humans. Laboratory tests for liver injury remained within normal limits. Conclusions: In humans, cholylsarcosine is not metabolized, is nontoxic, and has similar effects on biliary secretion as cholyltaurine. It appears safe to test in long-term studies the effect of cholylsarcosine on bile acid-deficiency states in humans.

Abstract: Risk assessment of recurrent variceal bleeding is essential for therapeutic decisions and is usually performed by endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract. We studied the value of portal venous duplex sonography in predicting subsequent variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis.Thirty patients with cirrhosis who received sclerotherapy because of acute variceal hemorrhage for the first time (hemorrhage group), 30 patients with cirrhosis who had no previous hemorrhage (nonhemorrhage group), and 30 control subjects were examined prospectively. With the use of portal duplex and color Doppler sonography, flow direction, flow velocity, vein diameter, and response to respiration of portal vein vessels were measured and portosystemic collaterals and thrombosis of portal vessels were visualized. The results of these measurements and imaging findings were combined into a Doppler sonoscore. At entry into the study, all patients were classified on the basis of a sonoscore as having a low (sonoscore,4) or a high (sonoscore,or = 4) risk for subsequent hemorrhage. During a mean follow-up period of 2 years (range, 15-36 months), the predictive value of this Doppler sonoscore was studied.In the hemorrhage group, the prevalence of recurrent hemorrhage was 40%, despite sclerotherapy, and the mortality rate was 60%. In patients with a Doppler sonoscore of 4 or more, the prevalence of recurrent hemorrhage was 67%, whereas in patients with a score less than 4, the prevalence was only 22% (p.02). After sclerotherapy, endoscopic criteria showed no significant correlation with the prevalence of bleeding. In the nonhemorrhage group, the prevalence of variceal hemorrhage occurring was 13%, and Doppler sonographic criteria showed no significant correlation with the prevalence of subsequent hemorrhage.We conclude that Doppler sonography, performed after the first occurrence of variceal hemorrhage, provides useful prognostic information regarding the risk of recurrent hemorrhage. If these results are confirmed, Doppler sonography may be used to select the best method of treatment.

Abstract: Controlled studies showed that cisapride is effective in non-ulcer dyspepsia. Its prokinetic properties are not complicated by dopamine inhibition. In our study the dose of 5 mg t.i.d. was adequate for the treatment of patients with gastric symptoms, while for patients with reflux symptoms the preferred dose is 10 mg t.i.d. cisapride. The average improvement after 1 month of treatment was 68%. Additional medication with antacids was not of benefit. Side effects such as abdominal cramps or diarrhea were minimal (less than 4%). 1071 patients were selected according to the principles described by Talley et al. in 1987. This method was well accepted by investigators and patients and is recommended for similar studies.

40. The sound speed anomaly of Baltic seawater

Abstract: The effect of the anomalous chemical composition of Baltic seawater on the speed of sound relative to seawater with quasi-standard composition was quantified at atmospheric pressure and temperatures of 1 to 46 °C. Three modern oceanographic time-of-flight sensors were applied in a laboratory setup for measuring the speed-of-sound difference δw in a pure water diluted sample of North Atlantic seawater and a sample of Baltic seawater of the same conductivity, i.e., the same practical salinity (SP = 7.766). The average δw amounts to 0.069 ± 0.014 m s−1, which is significantly larger than the resolution and reproducibility of the sensors and independent of temperature. This magnitude for the anomaly effect was verified with offshore measurements conducted at different sites in the Baltic Sea using one of the sensors. The results from both measurements show values up to 1 order of magnitude smaller than existing predictions based on chemical models.

Abstract: Fehr covers a wide range of topics in this article by necessity, because of his broadly conceived view of arithmetic instruction. He reminds us that arithmetic instruction must be determined by a set of several interrelated concerns: societal and children's needs, the structure of the discipline, and a knowledge of how children learn. Perhaps more than anything, though, I consider this article a classic because of Fehr's discussion of problem solving. To Fehr, problem solving is the ultimate goal of arithmetic instruction—a position that has a very familiar, contemporary ring. However, Fehr's views about how to develop problem-solving ability. which were an outgrowth of his commitment to field theories of learning, are less familiar and largely ignored. Since some recent studies tend to support Fehr's views, they warrant the attention of classroom teachers and researchers alike. By reprinting this article from April 1955. it is hoped that another perspective will be injected into the debate on how to teach problem solving. Abstract: IN THE early 1950s the mathema ticians at the university level began justi fiably to criticize the mathematical prep aration of high school students for university study. Partly because of this criticism, a number of reform movements arose, of which those of the University of Illinois Committee on School Mathe matics, the Commission on Mathematics of the College Entrance Examination Board, and the School Mathematics Study Group were most notable. Included in these programs were quite a few topics not found in the pre-1950 era, such as the structure of the several number systems, the early introduction of the function con cept, and a more rigorous presentation of Euclidean synthetic geometry. Likewise, the notions of sets and set operations were used to the advantage of better under standing. In the late 1950s the reform movement spread to Europe. A two-week interna tional seminar held in Royaumont, France, and attended by mathematicians and edu cators from Europe and the United States was organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The report of this seminar gave direction to the needed reform in sec ondary school mathematics in terms of new topics to be added, omissions of obsolete topics in algebra and geometry, and the updating of fundamental concepts (OECD 1960). However, the report did not produce a new program for school study. Subsequently, all European coun tries embarked on the reconstruction of new mathematics syllabi that, along with further OECD seminars, clarified the manner in which secondary school mathe matics could be presented so as to bring out its contemporary nature as a unified discipline (OECD 1961; OECD 1964). Further support of this goal was given by a group of distinguished American mathe maticians who convened in 1963 at Cam bridge, Massachusetts (Cambridge Con ference on School Mathematics 1963). All the foregoing activities indicated the manner by which experimental teach ing?making use of mathematicians, edu cators, and classroom teachers in an op erational research endeavor?could bring forth a more unified, more efficient, and more meaningful program in mathe matical education for university-bound students. Abstract: A DNA-dependent RNA polymerase has been isolated and characterized from the parasitic flagellated protozoan Leishmania mexicana. The initial stages of purification utilized high-ionic-strength extraction and protamine sulfate treatment. The enzyme was further purified by differential elution by heparin-Sepharose, DEAE-Sephadex, and carboxymethyl-Sephadex chromatography. Analysis of the chromatographically purified RNA polymerase on nondenaturing gels revealed two electrophoretic forms. The enzyme isolated had characteristics of true DNA-dependent RNA polymerase since it required DNA and all four nucleoside triphosphates for synthesis of RNase-sensitive products. Analysis of ammonium sulfate and metal ion optima, as well as relative activities of the enzyme with Mn2+ versus Mg2+, gave results similar to those reported for other RNA polymerase IIIs in eucaryotes. Formycin A triphosphate was found to be a noncompetitive inhibitor of RNA polymerase III, and cordycepin triphosphate was found to be inhibitory, although the exact mode of inhibition was not determined.
