The European Commission has funded within its 6th Framework Programme a three-year project (2005–2007) called CONRAD, COordinated Network for RAdiation Dosimetry. The organizational framework for this project was provided by the European radiation Dosimetry Group EURADOS. Work Package 6 of CONRAD dealt with “complex mixed radiation fields at workplaces” and in this context it organised a benchmark exercise, which included both measurements and calculations, in a stray radiation field at a high-energy particle accelerator at GSI, Germany. The aim was to intercompare the response of several types of active detectors and passive dosemeters in a well-characterised workplace field. The Monte Carlo simulations of the radiation field and the experimental determination of the neutron spectra with various Bonner Sphere Spectrometers are discussed in Rollet et al. (2008) and in Wiegel et al. (2008). This paper focuses on the intercomparison of the response of the dosemeters in terms of ambient dose equivalent. The paper describes in detail the detectors employed in the experiment, followed by a discussion of the results. A comparison is also made with the H*(10) values predicted by the Monte Carlo simulations and those measured by the BSS systems.

High-energy (12)C ions offer favourable conditions for the treatment of deep-seated local tumours. Several facilities for the heavy ion therapy are planned or under construction, for example the new clinical ion-therapy unit HIT at the Radiological University Clinics in Heidelberg. In order to improve existing treatment planning models, it is essential to evaluate the secondary fragment production and to include these contributions to the therapy dose with higher accuracy. Secondary neutrons are most abundantly produced in the reactions between (12)C beams and tissues. The dose contribution to tissues by a neutron is fairly small compared with the projectile and the other charged fragments due to no ionisation and the small reaction cross-sections; however, it distributes in a considerably wider region beyond the bragg-peak because of the strong penetrability. Systematic data on energy spectra and doses of secondary neutrons produced by (12)C beams using water targets of different thicknesses for various detection angles have therefore been measured in this study at GSI Darmstadt.

A moderator-type neutron monitor containing pairs of TLD 600/700 elements (Harshaw) modified with the addition of a lead layer (GSI ball) for the measurement of the ambient dose equivalent from neutrons at medium- and high-energy accelerators, is introduced in this work. Measurements were performed with the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) ball as well as with conventional polyethylene (PE) spheres at the high-energy accelerator SPS at European Organization for Nuclear Research [CERN (CERF)] and in Cave A of the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS at GSI. The measured dose values are compared with dose values derived from calculated neutron spectra folded with dose conversion coefficients. The estimated reading of the spheres calculated by means of the response functions and the neutron spectra is also included in the comparison. The analysis of the measurements shows that the PE/Pb sphere gives an improved estimate on the ambient dose equivalent of the neutron radiation transmitted through shielding of medium- and high-energy accelerators.

The Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) is planning a significant expansion of its accelerator facilities. Compared to the present GSI facility, a factor of 100 in primary beam intensities and up to a factor of 10,000 in secondary radioactive beam intensities are key technical goals of the proposal. The second branch of the so-called Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is the production of antiprotons and their storage in rings and traps. The facility will provide beam energies a factor of approximately 15 higher than presently available at the GSI for all ions, from protons to uranium. The shielding design of the synchrotron SIS 100/300 is shown exemplarily by using Monte Carlo calculations with the FLUKA code. The experimental area serving the investigation of compressed baryonic matter is analysed in the same way. In addition, a dose comparison is made for an experimental area operated with medium energy heavy-ion beams. Here, Monte Carlo calculations are performed by using either heavy-ion primary particles or proton beams with intensities scaled by the mass number of the corresponding heavy-ion beam.

Yields of neutrons produced by a 238U ion beam of 1 GeV/nucleon kinetic energy impinging on a thick Fe target were measured resulting in distributions differential in neutron angle (0° 50 MeV). The data serve in radiation protection planning for next-generation rare-isotope beam facilities. The experimental data are contrasted with predictions from transport codes as currently used in radiation shield design studies.

The applicability of several neutron detectors for dose measurements at a neutron field typical for high energy particle accelerators is investigated. The response of four commercially available active neutron dose meters and two passive detectors to neutrons from a 241Am-Be(α,n) source and to neutrons at the CERN EU high energy reference field was determined experimentally and simulated using the Monte-Carlo code FLUKA. Fluence response functions and dose responses for the different detectors were calculated in the energy range between 1 keV and 10 GeV. The results show that the dose response to the high energy neutron field at CERN of the conventional rem-counters is lower by a factor of 2 to 2.5 if compared to the dose response to a 241Am-Be(α,n) neutron source. The rem-counters exhibiting an additional layer of lead inside the moderating structure showed dose readings which differ only up to 25 %. A thermoluminescent based neutron detector was tested for comparison. These passive detectors revealed a neutron response similar to a rem-counter and may be preferable for situations with highly pulsed beams.

At high-energy particle accelerators, area monitoring needs to be performed in a wide range of neutron energies. In principle, neutrons occur from thermal energies up to the energy of the accelerated ions, which is for the present GSI (Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung) accelerator facility approximately 1-2 GeV per nucleon. There are no passive dosemeters available, which are designed for the use at high-energy accelerators. At GSI, a neutron dosemeter was developed, which is suitable for the measurement of high-energy neutron radiation by the insertion of a lead layer around Thermoluminescence (TL) detection elements (pairs of TL 600/700) at the centre of the dosemeter. The design of the sphere was derived from the construction of the extended range rem-counters for the measurement of ambient dose equivalent H(10). In this work, the dosemeter fluence response was measured in the quasi-monoenergetic neutron fields of the accelerator facility of the PTB in Braunschweig and in the thermal neutron field of the GKSS research reactor FRG-1 in Geesthacht. For the accelerator measurements, the reactions (7)Li(p,n)(7)Be, (3)H(p,n)(3)He and (2)H(d,n)(3)He were used to produce neutron fields with energy peaks between 144 keV and 19 MeV. The measured fluence responses are 27% too low for thermal energies and show an agreement with approximately 14% for the accelerator produced neutron fields related to the computed fluence responses (MCNP, FLUKA calculations). The measured as well as the computed fluence responses of the dosemeter are compared with the corresponding conversion coefficients.

Experiments were performed in Cave C of GSI (Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung) using the LAND (Large Area Neutron Detector) in combination with the deflection magnet ALADIN (A LArge DIpol magNet) in front of the LAND where charged particles and neutrons can be separated. This arrangement is used to create high-energetic neutron fields by irradiation of a thick lead target (5 cm) with deuteron beams with the energies of 500 or 800 MeV per nucleon. In break-up reactions the neutron is separated from the proton which is deflected in the magnetic field of the ALADIN. The produced neutron radiation, which has a pronounced peak at the nucleon energy, is used to measure the fluence response of the GSI neutron ball. A thermoluminescence (TL) based spherical neutron dosemeter was developed for the area monitoring for the quantity H(10) at high-energy accelerators. In the same experiment, the spectral neutron fluence Phi(E) is measured with the LAND in the energy range from 100 MeV to 1 GeV. The measured fluence responses are compared with results of FLUKA calculations and the corresponding fluence-to-dose conversion coefficients. The measured dosemeter responses are too high in comparison to the calculated ones (up to approximately 50%), the dosemeter reading gives dose values which are too high by a factor of 1.1-2.2 related to the corresponding fluence-to-dose conversion factors.

The Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt is planning a new accelerator Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). Two future experimental areas are regarded to be the most decisive points concerning the activation of air. One is the area for the production of antiprotons. A second crucial experimental area is the so-called Super Fragment Separator. The production of radioactive isotopes in air is calculated using the residual nuclei option of the Monte Carlo program FLUKA. The results are compared with the data for the activation of air given by Sullivan and in IAEA report 283. The resulting effective dose is calculated using a program package from the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection, the Bundesamt fur Stranlenschutz. The results demonstrate that a direct emission of the total radioactivity produced into the air will probably conflict with the limits of the German Radiation Protection Ordinance. Special measures have to be planned in order to reduce the amount of radioactivity released into the air.

UV-improved all-silica fibres with higher solarization-resistance against UV-light have been well known for three years; mainly the most inconvenient UV-absorption band around 215 nm has been reduced by passivating the defects. In addition, ionizing radiation such as gamma-radiation or X-rays can create similar defects, as shown in bulk samples of undoped silica having high-OH content; however two absorption bands around 215 nm and 230 nm with a similar defect structure are clearly observed. Using the same passivation mechanism, an improved UV-transmission below 250 nm is observed in fiber samples up to 5 m in length treated with Gamma-irradiation. During and after the damage, annealing processes with and without UV-light have been undertaken and studied for the first time. Because there is an acceptable transmission in the UV-region above 200 nm, the light of the commonly-used excimer-lasers and deuterium-lamps can be transmitted during Gamma-irradiation. Based on these results, the standard process of gamma-sterilisation using approx. 2 Mrad can be used for these fibres.

Mutation induction at the Hprt locus in Chinese hamster cells was studied after exposure to ultraviolet light, X-rays and alpha particles. While mutant frequency as a function of dose or fluence followed a linear–quadratic relationship with UV and X-rays, it showed a linear dependence for alpha particles. If mutant frequency is plotted vs. the logarithm of surviving fraction, a linear relationship is found in all cases although with different slopes. These are about equal with the two types of ionising radiations but about 10 times larger for UV. They can be used as a measure of mutagenic potential and are termed “mutagenicity”. It is shown that this parameter is correlated with the maximum of mutant yield, i.e., the number of mutants per cell at risk. It is concluded from this analysis that the maximum mutant yield is always found at doses or fluences which lead to 37% survival irrespective of the kind of radiation. If mutation induction is measured in X-irradiated cells after pre-exposure to UV, mutant frequency is higher than expected on the basis of independent action of the two radiations. Deletion spectra were determined by using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. It was found that the background of spontaneous mutants varied considerably and showed frequently repetitive patterns, presumably because of clonal expansion of pre-formed mutants. UV-induced mutants did not contain any deletions, while those with both X-rays and alpha particles the majority displayed partial and total deletions. Based on a total number of 134 X-ray- and 192 alpha-induced mutants, it is concluded that the total fraction of mutant clones without deletions (partial or total) is about 40% for X-rays and only about 20% for alpha-particles.

Die Berechnung der im Cylinderdurchmesser und Kolbenhub gegebenen grundlegenden Ausfuhrungsabmessungen einer neu zu entwerfenden Dampfmaschine hat von demjenigen Dampfdiagramm auszugehen, das aus wirtschaftlichen oder betriebstechnischen Grunden als bestimmend fur die praktischen Anforderungen an die auszufuhrende Maschine zu betrachten ist. Als erster Schritt ergibt sich daher die Aufzeichnung der Dampfverteilung in moglichster Annaherung an den anzustrebenden bzw. zu erwartenden Diagrammverlauf.

Dass man in Amerika seit langer Zeit in viel ausgedehnterem Masse fur Uebertragung ganz bedeutender Krafte und bei wesentlich hoheren Geschwindigkeiten Riemen verwendet als in Europa, ist eine langst bekannte Thatsache. Die vorzugliche Beschaffenheit des vorhandenen Ledermaterials, eine grosse Gewandtheit in der Anfertigung und Behandlung selbst sehr breiter Riemen und die geringe Scheu, welche der Amerikaner abnormen Verhaltnissen gegenuber an den Tag legt, sind die hauptsachlichsten Grunde dieser Erscheinung.

Die grossartigen Leistungen des amerikanischen Maschinenbanes, insbesondere in konstruktiver Richtung, liegen durchaus nicht auf der Heerstrasse der fluchtigen Besucher, welche leider auch auf technischem Gebiete mehr oder weniger einen Badeker-Gansemarsch einhalten. Gerade die allerbedeutendsten Leistungen liegen abseits und wollen aufgesucht und studirt sein. Viele sind zum teil fast unbekannt, und Veroffentlichungen daruber sind entweder durftig oder gar nicht vorhanden. Ich benutze daher die mir gewahrte Ermachtigung zur Veroffentlichung einiger Angaben und Skizzen uber solche Anlagen, inbesondere uber die grossten aller amerikanischen Maschinenanlagen, die der Calumet und Hecla-Kupfergrube am Oberen See, und dies um so lieber, als die grosse Ausstellung in Chicago nichts bietet, was maschinentechnisch mit dieser Anlage uberhaupt verglichen werden konnte.

Der Dampfcylinder ist an sich ein verhaltnismasig einfacher Maschinenteil; doch kann er durch Vereinigung mit den fur Unterbringung der Steuerorgane erforderlichen Kammern, Dampfleitungsanschlussen, Pas- und Unterstutzungsflachen, Angussen fur Armaturen und dergleichen auch zu einem sehr komplizierten Gusstuck werden. In der folgenden Behandlung wird die Formgebung und Ausfuhrung des Dampfcylinders hauptsachlich hinsichtlich der konstruktiven Verwirklichung warmetechnischer Forderungen behandelt werden, ohne zunachst auf die mit der Verwendung bestimmter Steuerorgane zusammenhangende besondere Ausgestaltung der Cylinder einzugehen, deren Behandlung gemeinsam mit der der inneren Steuerorgane erfolgt.

Ahnlich wie der Gedanke der warmetechnischen Ausnutzbarkeit der Gichtgase eine neue Entwicklungsperiode der Gasmaschine veranlaste und die Warmewirtschaft der Huttenbetriebe bedeutend erhohte, so erhielt der Dampfmaschinenbau bedeutsame Anregung zur Anwendung des Hochdruckdampfes und wurde die Warmewirtschaft der Dampfbetriebe wesentlich gesteigert durch die neuzeitliche allgemeine Verfolgung des Gedankens der Abdampf- und Zwischendampfverwertung. Bis in das letzte Jahrzehnt waren die Bestrebungen zur Vervollkommnung der Dampfmaschine vornehmlich beherrscht durch die Forderung geringsten Dampfverbrauches der Maschine an sich. Durch Vereinigung des Warmebedarfs fur Heizungs-, Koch- und Trockenzwecke industrieller Anlagen mit dem Warmeverbrauch der fur sie dienenden Dampfmaschinenbetriebe ergeben sich nun neue Gesichtspunkte fur die Anpassung der Konstruktions- und Betriebsverhaltnisse der Dampfmaschine an die Forderung weitestgehender Ausnutzung des Warmeinhalts des Arbeitsdampfes zwecks geringsten Dampfverbrauchs nicht nur der Dampfmaschinenanlage, sondern des mit ihr zusammenhangenden industriellen Betriebes uberhaupt. Wirtschaftlich ungunstig arbeitende Maschinen konnen hierbei durch die Ausnutzung der Abdampfwarme einer warmetechnisch vollkommenen Dampfmaschine uberlegen sich erweisen, wenn der letzteren Abdampf so niedrige Temperatur besitzt, das er in der Fabrikation nicht weiter verwendet werden kann.

Der Abschied von Chicago fallt nach langerem Aufenthalte nicht schwer und lasst etwas wie eine Art Erlosung fuhlen; selbst jetzt, wo die Weltausstellung viel Interessantes bietet, wiegen die Schattenseiten die Vorteile auf. In der Ausstellung wirken die grossartige Architektur und der ungeheure Massstab machtig, ebenso manches Ausgestellte, der starkere und bleibende Eindruck ist aber der der Ermudung. Die Nuchternheit der Ausstellung im Innern und die zu durchmessenden Entfernungen aufsen sind zu gross; letztere werden durch eine unzweckmassig angelegte elektrische Hochbahn nicht abgekurzt, und das Luckenhafte und vielfach auch das Jahrmarktmassige der Ausstellung lasst volle Befriedigung nicht aufkommen; das Studium ist schwere Arbeit und zu wenig Genuss, letzterer in edlem Sinne gemeint. Fur gewohnliche Zerstreuung ist zwar auch gesorgt; die Vorbilder von Paris finden sich in reichlichen Nachahmungen wieder; der »Betrieb« ist aber hochst nuchtern, und alles wird so geschafts- und dollarmassig behandelt wie Excelsior-Hosentrager oder Patent-Stiefelsohlen. Die Sehnsucht nach Ortsveranderung wachst in Chicago sehr rasch.

Boston wird durch Flusswasser versorgt, das durch Thalsperren am Cochituate-See und Sudbury-Fluss angestaut wird und unter naturlichem Gefalle dem Sammelbehalter in Brookline fur die Versorgung der niedrig gelegenen Stadtteile zufliesst; ausserdem besteht eine Pumpstation neben dem Sammelbehalter fur die Versorgung des Hochdruckgebietes der Stadt.

Die Ausstellung ist eroffnet, das grosse Werk vollendet — vielleicht im Juli! Denn gleich unfertig wurde wohl bisher noch keine Ausstellung den Blicken der Schaulustigen freigegeben. Trotzdem macht jetzt schon, anfangs Mai, die Ausstellung, wenigstens in ihrem ausseren Gewande, einen grossartigen Eindruck, gegen den alle bisherigen Ausstellungen zuruckstehen, vielleicht mit Ausnahme der ausserlich prachtig zu »weissen Ausstellungsstadt« lasst den Beschauer die Nahe des rauchigen und hasslichen Geschaftsteiles von Chicago vergessen, in dem er gar machtig die Sehnsucht nach Ruhe, Sauberkeit und Schonheit empfunden hat.

In der ausgefuhrten Maschine erfahrt der Dampf auser durch unvollstandige Expansion und Kompression eine noch weitergehende Beeintrachtigung seiner Arbeitsfahigkeit infolge der Drosselungswiderstande der Ein- und Auslasorgane, des Warmeaustausches mit den nicht warmeundurchlassigen Cylinderwandungen, sowie infolge der Undichtheiten der Steuerorgane und Kolben.

Die kunstliche Kalteerzeugung hat in Amerika auf den verschiedenen Anwendungsgebieten eine weit ausgedehntere und im einzelnen grofsartigere Benutzung gefunden als in Europa.

Die vom Kolben der Dampfmaschine auf die Kolbenstange ubertragenen Krafte ermitteln sich aus dem Unterschied der zu beiden Seiten des Kolbens wirksamen Dampfdrucke. Beim Hingang des Kolbens steht dessen Deckelseite unter der Wirkung der Spannungsanderungen der Fullungs- und Expansionsperiode, wahrend er auf der Kurbelseite den Spannungsanderungen der Austritts- und Kompressionsperiode ausgesetzt ist.

Die elektrische Beleuchtung und Heizung samtlicher Hochschulgebaude, sowie die Versorgung der verschiedenen Laboratorien und Institute der Hochschule mit elektrischem Strom erfolgt von einem mit Dampfbetrieb eingerichteten Kraftwerk aus, das gleichzeitig einen wesentlichen Teil des Maschinenbaulaboratoriums zur Untersuchung von Dampfmaschinen und Kesseln, sowie von Pumpen und Kompressoren bildet.
