Abstract

The reactione + e - →e + e - ηπ0π0→e + e - 6γ has been analysed using the full data sample taken with the Crystal Ball detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY. The ηπ0π0 invariant mass spectrum is dominated by the η', for which we determine the radiative width Γγγ(η') to be (4.5±0.3±0.5)keV. Near 1.9 GeV/c2 we observe a second enhancement in the ηπ0π0 mass distribution. Assuming that these events are created by the production and subsequent decay of a wide resonanceX(1900), we have investigated the decay modes, the invariant mass distributions of the ηπ0 and π0π0 subsystems and the angular distributions of the final state mesons. We find that the data is best described byJ PC=2∓. For thisJ P assignment the resonance parameters are Γγγ(X) BR(X→ηππ)=(0.95±0.27±0.20) keV Γtot (X)=(221±92±44)MeV, andM(X)=(1881±32±40) MeV/c2.

Abstract

The Crystal Ball detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY has been used to measure the branching ratios for the decay modes τ ± →h ± π 0 ν and τ ± →h ± π 0 π 0 ν , where h ± is any charged hadron. The results are BR( τ ± → h ± π 0 ν ) = (22.0±0.8±1.9)%, BR( τ ± → h ± π 0 π 0 ν ) = (5.7±0.5 +1.0 −1.7 )%. The first result is in good agreement with the present world average. The decay mode h ± π 0 π 0 ν is reconstructed in τ decays for the first time. Its branching ratio, however, is somewhat lower than the corresponding world average, and therefore tends to increase the one-prong problem.

Abstract

The Crystal Ball detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II has been used to analyze exclusive semileptonic decays ofB mesons produced at γ(4S) energies. The decayB→evD* has been observed with a branching ratio of (7.0±1.8±1.4)% using theπ°D decay mode of theD*. In addition we have searched for the exclusive semileptonic decayB±→e±vπ0. We find an upper limit onB±→e±vπ0 of 0.22% at the 90% CL.

Abstract

We have searched for axion and light Higgs boson production in the channel ϒ (1 S ) → (a 0 or h 0 ) + γ , where the non-interacting axion a 0 and the Higgs boson h 0 do not decay in the detector. We find no evidence for an axion and give an upper limit, Br( ϒ (1S) → a 0 γ ) −5 (90% CL), for long-lived axions. Combining our limit with the previous search in J / ψ decays, we are able to rule out the axion in the standard model with first order QCD corrections. Our ϒ (1S) data also rule out a Higgs boson with mass m h

Abstract

The reaction ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ has been analyzed using 97 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data taken with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}$ storage ring DORIS II at beam energies around 5.3 GeV. For the first time we have measured the cross section for $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ mvariant masses ranging from threshold to about 2 GeV. We measure an approximately flat cross section of about 10 nb for $W={m}_{{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}}l0.8$ GeV, which is below 0.6 GeV, in good agreement with a theoretical prediction based on an unitarized Born-term model. At higher invariant masses we observe formation of the ${f}_{2}(1270)$ resonance and a hint of the ${f}_{0}(975)$. We deduce the following two-photon widths: ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}({f}_{2}(1270))=3.19\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.16\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}_{0.28}^{0.29}$ keV and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}({f}_{0}(975))l0.53$ keV at 90% C.L. The decay-angular distributions show the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ system to be dominantly spin 0 for $Wl0.7$ GeV and spin 2, helicity 2 in the ${f}_{2}(1270)$ region, with helicity 0 contributing at most 22% (90% C.L.).

Abstract

The production ofJ/ψ inB meson decays has been measured on the Γ(4S) resonance using the Crystal Ball detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II. TheJ/ψ is identified by itse+e− decay mode. We obtain a branching ratio of BR(B→J/ψX)=(1.12±0.33±0.25)% in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on color suppression. TheJ/ψ momentum distribution is observed to be peaked at high values. This implies a substantial contribution from directB meson decays to theJ/ψ. In addition upper limits onJ/ψ production in Γ(1S) and Γ(2S) decays and in continuum processes are determined.

Abstract

The e + e − -storage ring DORIS II provides polarized beams with polarizations up to 80% in the energy range of the ϒ ′ meson. The method of resonance depolarization allows the average beam energy to be determined to a precision of ±0.1 MeV. An energy scan of the hadronic cross section over the resonance range with the detectors ARGUS and Crystal Ball determines the ϒ ′ mass to be (10023.1 ± 0.4) MeV.

Abstract

The rationR=σ(e + e −→hadrons)/σ(e + e −→ µ+ µ−) was measured with the LENA detector at DORIS in a scan between 7.40 and 7.48 GeV and between 8.67 and 9.43 GeV center of mass energies. Corrected for QED radiative effects,R is found to be constant with an average value ofR=3.37 ±0.06stat±0.23syst. No narrow resonances withΓ ee (Γ had/Γ tot)⊗0.30 keV (95% C.L.) and no steps have been observed. Based on this value ofR, revised values for υ(1S) resonance parameters are presented.

Abstract

The reaction e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..e/sup +/e/sup -/eta..pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/ has been observed with the Crystal Ball detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY. The eta..pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/ mass spectrum is dominated by the eta', and the two-photon width GAMMA/sub eta//sub '//sub ..-->..//sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma../ is determined to be 4.6 +- 0.4 +- 0.6 keV. Limits on GAMMA/sub X//sub ..-->..//sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma../ x B/sub X//sub ..-->..//sub eta//sub ..pi..//sub ..pi../ are given for other possible states.

Abstract

The Crystal Ball detector at the DESY storage ring DORIS II has been used to study radiative decays of the \ensuremath{\Upsilon}(2S) resonance. We report on the analysis of the exclusive channel \ensuremath{\Upsilon}(2S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{b}$, ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{b}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${e}^{+}$${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ or ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}$${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$. We detect two ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{b}$ states by observing two monochromatic photon lines at energies (107.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3) MeV and (131.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3) MeV, respectively. The product branching ratios B[\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(2S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{b}$]\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B[${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{b}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S) ] are (1.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2)% for the first state and (2.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)% for the second. For the product branching ratio of the third ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{b}$ state, which has been observed in inclusive measurements, we find an upper limit of 0.2% (90% C.L.). Combining our results with inclusive measurements, branching ratios for ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{b}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S) are derived. Using theoretical estimates for the radiative widths of the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{b}$ states, we determine their hadronic widths; the results are compared with QCD predictions.

Abstract

Charged hadron production ine+e− annihilation is studied in the 7 to 10 GeV CM energy region and at the Υ (9.46) and Υ′ (10.01) resonances with the LENA detector at DORIS. The statistical moments of the charged multiplicities are studied. The data show KNO scaling behaviour and suggest the presence of long range correlations. An average charged multiplicityrise of Δn(Υ)=0.55±0.19 and Δn(Υ′)=1.26±0.29 over the continuum is observed for the Υ and Υ′ direct decays. The jet structure of the Υ and Υ′ direct decays is investigated using the charged particles. The polar angular distributions of the jet axis behave like 1+α(T) cos2θ with 〈α(T)〉Υ=0.7±0.3 and 〈α(T)〉Υ′=0.6±0.4. The 〈α(T)〉Υ value is in agreement with the QCD vector gluon assignment and excludes scalar gluons by more than four standard deviations.

Using the Crystal Ball detector at thee +e− storage ring DORIS-II, we have searched for the hadronic transitions Υ(2S)→ηΥ(1S) and Υ(2S)→π0Υ(1S) in exclusive decays where the Υ(1S) decays into ane +e− or aµ + µ - pair and the η and π0 are detected by their decay modes η→γγ, η→γγ and π0→γγ. From the number of observed events we derive, after consideration of possible background sources, upper limits on the branching ratiosB(Υ(2S)→ηΥ(1S))

A search for the decays γ→ρπ, γ→J/ψX and γ→γa (whereX is undetermined and a is an axion) has been completed using the LENA detector at the DORIS storage ring. No evidence for any of these processes was found. For these decay modes we set branching fraction upper limits (90% C.L.) of 2.1×10−3, 2.0×10−2 and 9.1×10−4, respectively.

Abstract

Electron-positron annihilations intto hadrons were observed in the region of the ϒ (9.46 GeV) and the ϒ′(10.02 GeV) resonances at the storage ring DORIS with the nonmagnetic NaI lead-glass detector. Distributions of sphericity and charged multiplicity were measured. Outside the resonances the data show a clear two-jet structure, while the decays of the resonances are compatible with the predictions of a three-gluon model.

Angular correlations in the cascade reaction e+e−→Υ(2S)→γχb, χb→γΥ, Υ→μ+μ− or Υ→e+e−, have been used for the first time to investigate the spins of the χb states. The results support the χb spins predicted by the potential models of heavy quarkonia.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the decay ϒ′→ϒπ + π − → l + l − π + π − . The 7 events seen yield a branching ratio B ( ϒ ′→ ϒπ + π − )=(19±8)%. A consistent value of B =(26±13)% is obtained from the charged multiplicities of the ϒ′ and ϒ decays. Using these values we deduce Γ tot ( ϒ ′)=(31 +10 −8 ) keV and B ee ( ϒ ′)=(1.8±0.5)%. Furthermore we estimate Γ ( ϒ ′→gg ϒ )=(10±5) keV in agreement with QCD predictions using vector gluons while one would expect 100 keV with scalar gluons.

Abstract

The Crystal Ball detector has been used at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY to study the reaction e+e−→e+e−γ*γ*→e+e−γγ, where X is a narrow resonance with mass between 100 and 3000 MeV. Formation of π0, η, and η’ mesons is observed, and the following meson partial widths are obtained: Γπ0Γ0→γγ=7.7±0.5±0.5 eV, Γη−γγ=0.514±0.017±0.035 keV, and Γη’→γγ=4.7±0.5±0.5 keV. No other narrow resonances are observed, and upper limits are given for the product ΓX→γγBX→γγ. .AE

Abstract

Using the Crystal Ball detector operating at the DORIS II storage ring we have measured the leptonic partial widthsГ ee of the Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) resonances. We find $$\Gamma _{ee} (\Upsilon (1S)) = 1.34 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.06keV$$ and $$\Gamma _{ee} (\Upsilon (2S)) = 0.56 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.02keV.$$ The effect onГ ee of applying different prescriptions for radiative corrections is discussed. We also measureR, the ratio of non-resonant hadronic cross section to the Born cross section of μ pair production, at c.m. energyW=9.39 GeV to beR=3.48±0.04±0.16.

Abstract

The total cross section fore+e− annihilation into hadrons for center of mass energies from 9.4 to 9.5 GeV has been measured with the nonmagnetic DESY-Heidelberg detector at DORIS. A value ofR=σhad/σµµ=3.8±0.7 for the continuum region around the Υ (9.46) resonance has been determined. The ratioΓ ee Γhad/Γtot of electronic, hadronic and total widths has been reevaluated to be (1.00±0.23) keV for the Υ resonance and (0.37±0.16) keV for the Υ′. In addition, a search for directly produced pohotons from Υ decays of the type Υ→γ+gluon+gluon has been performed. The Υ decay into muon pairs has also been searched for.

Abstract

The inclusive photon spectrum in hadronic decays of the UPSILON(2S) is measured with the Crystal Ball detector at DORIS II. Four well separated photon lines, which are consistent with the decay hypothesis UPSILON(2S)..--> gamma..+ /sup 3/P/sub 2,1,0/ and /sup 3/P/sub 2,1/..--> gamma..+UPSILON(1S), are observed. The energies of the lines from the primary transitions are E/sub gamma1/ = 110.4 +- 0.8 +- 2.2 MeV, E/sub gamma2/ = 130.6 +- 0.8 +- 2.4 MeV and E/sub gamma3/ = 163.8 +- 1.6 +- 2.7 MeV; the branching fractions are (5.8 +- 0.7 +- 1.0)%, (6.5 +- 0.7 +- 1.2)%, and (3.6 +- 0.8 +- 0.9)%, respectively. The secondary transitions center at approx. =430 MeV with a combined branching fraction of (3.6 +- 0.7 +- 0.5)%.

Abstract

The reaction γγ→π0η has been investigated with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY storage ring DORIS II. Formation of δ(980) and A2(1320) has been observed with γγ partial widths Γγγ(A2)=1.14±0.20±0.2 6 keV and Γγγ(δ)B(δ→πη)=0.19±0.07 −0.07+0.10 keV.

Abstract

The resonance parameters of the ϒ′(10.01) were measured using the LENA detector at the DORIS e+e− storage ring. We obtained a mass of M(ϒ′) = (10 013.6 ± 1.2 ± 10.0) MeV and an electronic width of Γee(ϒ′) = (0.53 ± 0.07−0.05+0.09 keV. The upper limit set to the μ-pair branching ratio is 3.8% which implies a lower limit on the total ϒ′ width of 14 keV. Together with out previous measurement of the ϒ parameters we obtain a mass difference M(ϒ′) − M(ϒ) = (552.0 ± 1.3 ± 10.0) MeV andΓee(ϒ′)Γee(ϒ) = 0.43 ± 0.07−0.00+0.05.

We have investigated the hadronic transitions UPSILON(2S) ..-->.. ..pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/UPSILON(1S) ..-->.. ..gamma gamma gamma gamma..l +l/sup -/ (l = ..mu.. or e) and UPSILON(2S) ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/UPSILON(1S) ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/..pi.. /sup -/e/sup +/e/sup -/ using the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring DORIS II. Using the present world-average value of B/sub l/l(UPSILON(1S)) = 2.9 +- 0.3)% we derive branching ratios B(UPSILON(2S) ..-->.. ..pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/UPSILON(1S)) = (8.0 +- 1.5)% and B(UPSILON(2S) ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/UPSILON(1S)) = (16.9 +- 4.0)%. We also present results on the invariant-mass spectra and the angular distributions of the dipion system.

The ϒ′ state has been observed as a narrow resonance at M ( ϒ ′) = 10.02 ± 0.02 GeV in e + e − annihilations, using a NaI and lead-glass detector in the DORIS storage ring at DESY. The ratio Г ee Г had /Г tot of electronic, hadronic, and total widths has been measured to be 0.32 ± 0.13 keV. The parameters of the Г particle have also been determined to be/ M (Г)

Abstract

The Crystal Ball detector at the Doris II storage ring at DESY has been used to study the electron energy spectrum of the decay τ→evv. In the standard model the Lorentz structure of the decay matrix element is of the well known V-A type, resulting in a Michel parameter of p =0.75. Our spectrum is found to be consistent with this value. A fit yields the value of 0.64±0.07.

Abstract

The Crystal Ball detector at the Doris II storage ring at DESY was used to search for the exotic decay processes τ →e γ , τ →e π 0 , and τ →e η . No signal was observed. We obtained the following 90% CL upper limits on the branching fractions: B ( τ →e γ ) −4 , B ( τ →e π 0 ) −4 , B ( τ →e η ) −4 .

Abstract

We have searched for radiative decays of the ϒ(1S) resonance, ϒ(1S)→γX, whereX is one of the mesons η, η′f2 (1270),f2 (1720), or a narrow resonance with mass less than 3 GeV/c2 which decays into either π0π0 or ηη. The mesons are identified in their all-neutral decay modes. Since we do not find any such decays, we calculate upper limits on the corresponding branching ratios. These limits are compared to theoretical predictions and to the corresponding branching ratios measured in radiativeJ/Ψ decays.

Abstract

Using the LENA detector at the DORIS e+e− storage ring we have measured the hadronic cross section and the μ‐pair branching ratio of the Y (9.46) resonance. We obtain the electronic width Γee = (1.23±0.10±0.14) keV and the mass M = (9 461.3±0.7±10.0) MeV, the μ‐pair branching ratio Bμμ = (3.5± 1.5±0.4)% and the total width Γtot = (35−10 −7+25 +9) keV. For the Y′ resonance, the mass is found to be (10014.0±1.0±10.0) MeV, and Γee · Γhad/Γtot = (0.51±0.07±0.06) keV.

Abstract

The Crystal Ball detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS-II has been used to search for radiativeB meson decays, especially of the typeb→sγ. No monoenergetic γ-lines have been found in the inclusive photon spectrum from У(4S) decays, and upper limits are obtained for radiative decays ofB mesons to various strange mesons and to theD*. Integrating the photon spectrum over the corresponding energy range, we find $$BR(B \to \gamma X)< 2.8 \times 10^{ - 3} ,$$ at 90% confidence level for the mass range 892 MeV ≦MX≦2045 MeV.

Abstract

The Crystal Ball Collaboration has measured the energy spectrum of electrons from semileptonicB meson decays at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II. Branching ratios and weak mixing angles of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix are determined using several models for the hadronic matrix elements. We obtain the branching ratio for semileptonic.B decays to charmed states BR(B→evX c )=(11.7±0.4±1.0)%. Our result for the corresponding Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element is |V cb |=0.052±0.006. The model dependence of both results is included in the error. We have not observed semileptonicB decays to non-charmed mesons.
