Abstract The goal of this work was to quantify the effect of school closure during the first year of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Switzerland. This allowed us to determine the usefulness of school closures as a pandemic countermeasure for emerging coronaviruses in the absence of pharmaceutical interventions. The use of multivariate endemic-epidemic modelling enabled us to analyse disease spread between age groups which we believe is a necessary inclusion in any model seeking to achieve our goal. Sophisticated time-varying contact matrices encapsulating four different contact settings were included in our complex statistical modelling approach to reflect the amount of school closure in place on a given day. Using the model, we projected case counts under various transmission scenarios (driven by implemented social distancing policies). We compared these counterfactual scenarios against the true levels of social distancing policies implemented, where schools closed in the spring and reopened in the autumn. We found that if schools had been kept open, the vast majority of additional cases would be expected among primary school-aged children with a small fraction of cases filtering into other age groups following the contact matrix structure. Under this scenario where schools were kept open, the cases were highly concentrated among the youngest age group. In the scenario where schools had remained closed, most reduction would also be expected in the lowest age group with less effects seen in other groups.

A pervasive challenge in noble gas geochemistry is to ensure that analytical techniques do not modify the composition of the noble gases in the samples. Noble gases are present in the atmosphere and are used in a number of manufacturing procedures and by laboratory equipment. Of particular concern is the introduction of atmospheric or laboratory noble gases to samples during preparation before samples are placed in a vacuum chamber for analysis. Recent work has shown the potential for contamination of crushed samples with air-derived He that is not released by placing the samples under vacuum at room temperature. Using pure He gas as a tracer, we show that the act of crushing samples to a fine powder itself can introduce He contamination but that this is easily avoided by crushing under liquid or in an inert atmosphere. Because the He is trapped during crushing, the same concern does not extend to samples that are naturally fine-grained when collected. We also show model results that demonstrate when this effect might significantly impact samples for (U–Th) / He geochronology or 3He cosmogenic nuclide dating. The degree of He contamination from crushing samples to sizes smaller than the > 63 µm range typically used for geochronology is insignificant for samples with a date of at least 1 Ma and 1 ppm U, and the degree of He contamination from crushing samples to sizes smaller than the 100–500 µm range typically used for cosmogenic nuclide dating is also insignificant for samples with a date of at least 10 ka with typical 3He production rates.

Apatite and zircon are among the best-studied and most widely used accessory minerals for geochronology and thermochronology. Given that apatite and zircon are often present in the same lithologies, distinguishing the two phases in crushed mineral separates is a common task for geochronology, thermochronology, and petrochronology studies. Here we present a method for efficient and accurate apatite and zircon mineral phase identification and verification using X-ray micro-computed tomography (microCT) of grain mounts that provides additional three-dimensional grain size, shape, and inclusion suite information. In this study, we analyze apatite and zircon grains from Fish Canyon Tuff samples that went through methylene iodide (MEI) and lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) heavy liquid density separations. We validate the microCT results using known standards and phase identification with Raman spectroscopy, demonstrating that apatite and zircon are distinguishable from each other and other common phases, e.g., titanite, based on microCT X-ray density. We present recommended microCT scanning protocols after systematically testing the effects of different scanning parameters and sample positions. This methodology can help to reduce time spent performing density separations with highly toxic chemicals and visually inspecting grains under a light microscope, and the improved mineral identification and characterization can make geochronologic data more robust.

We test whether X-ray micro-computed tomography (microCT) imaging can be used as a tool for screening magnetite grains to improve the accuracy and precision of cosmogenic 3He exposure dating. We extracted detrital magnetite from a soil developed on a fanglomerate at Whitewater, California, which was offset by the Banning strand of the San Andreas Fault. This study shows that microCT screening can distinguish between inclusion-free magnetite and magnetite with fluid or common solid inclusions. Such inclusions can produce bulk 3He concentrations that are significantly in excess of the expected spallation production. We present Li concentrations, major and trace element analyses, and estimated magnetite (U–Th) / He cooling ages of samples in order to model the contribution from fissiogenic, nucleogenic, and cosmogenic thermal neutron production of 3He. We show that mineral inclusions in magnetite can produce 3He concentrations of up to 4 times that of the spallation component, leading to erroneous exposure ages. Therefore, grains with inclusions must be avoided in order to facilitate accurate and precise magnetite 3He exposure dating. Around 30 % of all grains were found to be without inclusions, as detectable by microCT, with the largest proportion of suitable grains in the grain size range of 400–800 µm. While grains with inclusions have 3He concentrations far in excess of the values expected from existing 10Be and 26Al data in quartz at the Whitewater site, magnetite grains without inclusions have concentrations close to the predicted depth profile. We measured 3He concentrations in aliquots without inclusions and corrected them for Li-produced components. By comparing these data to the known exposure age of 53.5 ± 2.2 ka, we calibrate a production rate for magnetite 3He at sea level and high latitude (SLHL) of 116 ± 13 at g−1 a−1. We suggest that this microCT screening approach can be used to improve the quality of cosmogenic 3He measurements of magnetite and other opaque mineral phases for exposure age and detrital studies.

Abstract The Atacama Desert, on the western margin of the Central Andes, hosts some of the world's largest porphyry copper deposits (PCDs). Despite a hyperarid climate, many of these PCDs have undergone secondary “supergene” enrichment, whereby copper has been concentrated via groundwater‐driven leaching and reprecipitation, yielding supergene profiles containing valuable records of weathering and landscape evolution. We combine hematite (U‐Th‐Sm)/He geochronology and oxygen isotope analysis to compare the weathering histories of two Andean PCDs and test the relative importance of climate and tectonics in controlling both enrichment and water table movement. At Cerro Colorado, in the Precordillera, hematite precipitation records prolonged weathering from ∼31 to ∼2 Ma, tracking water table descent following aridity‐induced canyon incision from the late Miocene onward. By contrast, hematite at Spence, within the Central Depression, is mostly younger than ∼10.5 Ma, suggesting exhumation ended much later. A heavy oxygen isotopic signature for Spence hematite suggests that upwelling formation water has been an important source of groundwater, accounting for a high modern water table despite persistent hyperaridity, whereas isotopically light hematite at Cerro Colorado formed in the presence of meteoric water. Compared with published paleo‐environmental and sedimentological records, our data show that weathering can persist beneath appreciable post‐exhumation cover, under hyperarid conditions unconducive to enrichment. The susceptibility of each deposit to aridity‐induced water table descent, canyon incision and deep weathering has been controlled by recharge characteristics and morphotectonic setting. Erosional exhumation, rather than aridity‐induced water table decay, appears to be more important for the development of supergene enrichment.

Tungsten is the main candidate material for plasma-facing armour components in future fusion reactors. Bombardment with energetic fusion neutrons causes collision cascade damage and defect formation. Interaction of defects with helium, produced by transmutation and injected from the plasma, modifies defect retention and behaviour. Here we investigate the residual lattice strains caused by different doses of helium-ion-implantation into tungsten and tungsten‑rhenium alloys. Energy and depth-resolved synchrotron X-ray micro-diffraction uniquely permits the measurement of lattice strain with sub-micron 3D spatial resolution and ~10−4 strain sensitivity. Increase of helium dose from 300 appm to 3000 appm increases volumetric strain by only ~2.4 times, indicating that defect retention per injected helium is ~3 times higher at low helium doses. This suggests defect retention is not a simple function of implanted helium dose, but strongly depends on material composition and presence of impurities. Conversely, analysis of W-1 wt% Re alloy samples and of different crystal orientations shows that both the presence of rhenium, and crystal orientation, have a comparatively small effect on defect retention. These insights are key for the design of armour components in future reactors where it will be essential to account for irradiation-induced dimensional change when predicting component lifetime and performance. For laboratory and synchrotron based X-ray sources, radiation damage has posed a significant barrier to obtaining high-resolution structural data from biological macromolecules. The problem is particularly acute for micron-sized crystals where the weaker signal often necessitates the use of higher intensity beams to obtain the relevant data. Here, we employ a combination of techniques, including Bragg coherent diffractive imaging to characterise the radiation induced damage in a micron-sized protein crystal over time. The approach we adopt here could help screen for potential protein crystal candidates for measurement at X-ray free election laser sources.
