Abstract

Results are presented on the production cross-section of charmed particles obtained from the WA75 emulsion hybrid experiment. The events, selected by the presence of a muon with a high momentum transverse to the beam direction, were located and analysed in nuclear emulsions. A Monte Carlo simulation allowed the computation of acceptances due to both apparatus and selection, as well as scanning and finding efficiencies. The ccBAR hadroproduction cross-section has been determined over the entire X(F) region as sigma(ccBAR)=23.1+/-1.3(stat)+4.0/-3.3(syst) mu-b per nucleon assuming an A0.87 dependence.

Abstract

Results are presented on the production characteristics of charmed particles obtained from the WA75 emulsion hybrid experiment. The events, selected by the presence of a muon with a high momentum transverse to the beam direction, were located and analysed in nuclear emulsions. Inclusive and correlation properties are systematically compared with the lowest-order QCD calculations for DDBAR hadroproduction. Results concerning the correlation properties indicate some contribution from next-to-leading order [O(alpha(s)3] subprocesses.

Abstract

We report results on D0 and D+ production in proton-emulsion interactions at s =38.7 GeV. A fit to the form (1−|xF|)n exp (−bp 2 T ) yields n=6.9 +1.9 −1.8 and b=0.84 +0.10 −0.08 (GeV/c)−2. The total inclusive cross section, is assuming linear A dependence, is measured to be 38±3(stat.) ±13 (sys.) μb for the D0 and 38±9±14 μb for the D+. A comparison of these results with previous measurements indicates that nuclear effects do not strongly influence charm production. The predictions of QCD are in good agreement with our data.

Abstract

We present results on charm pair correlations measured in proton-emulsion interactions at s =38.7 GeV. The predictions of leading order QCD for the distributions in invariant mass, rapidity gap, xF, and polar angle in the charm pair CMS are qualitatively consistent with our measurements. The mean pT of the pairs is equal within errors to that measured in dilepton production at the same energy and mass range.

Abstract

The fraction {ital f} of {ital D}{sup 0} semimuonic decays which occur through the {ital K}{mu}{nu} mode has been measured in a hybrid emulsion spectrometer. Analysis of 124 semimuonic {ital D}{sup 0}-decay candidates gives {ital f}=0.32{plus minus}0.05 (stat) {plus minus}0.05 (syst). From this measurement and existing data on the {ital D}{sup 0} semileptonic branching ratio and lifetime, we obtain the branching ratio {ital R}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{nu})=(2.4{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}0.5)% and partial decay rate {Gamma}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{nu})=(5.6{plus minus}0.9{plus minus}1.2){times}10{sup 10} s{sup {minus}1}.

Abstract

A hybrid apparatus consisting of a movable emulsion target and a magnetic spectrometer was used in a fixed target Fermilab Tevatron experiment to study the production of heavy quarks by high-energy hadron beams. High-resolution silicon microstrip detectors were used for precise tracking in the dense particle environment. Details of the experimental apparatus, including the data acquisition system, are described.

8. Selective and delayed adaptations of human saccades

Abstract

Saccades are jump-like eye movements to a target, controlled in a feedforward manner so that they do not deviate in response to intrasaccadic target shifts. Instead, systematically induced intrasaccadic target step back gradually reduces the first saccade amplitude due to adaptation in order to catch the first target on the fovea by a single saccade. Inspired by the context-specific adaptation of the vestibule-ocular reflex, we investigated selective adaptation of three types of human saccades by using Deubel's modified version of the double step paradigm (1986, 1987). Saccades to a jumping target (visually-guided externally-triggered saccade, VE-saccade), a stationary visible target (visually-guided internally-initiated saccade, VI-saccade) and a remembered target (memory-guided saccade, M-saccade), which have different peak velocities and accuracies, showed unique adaptive capabilities, as shown by other authors with respect to the VE-saccade and VI-saccade in our paradigm. Even when the target step back was consistently delayed by up to 400 msec from the end of each first saccade, such adaptation still occurred. These results suggest that the adaptation of saccades should take place during or shortly after the first saccades and should be closely related in time with the perception of the first saccade errors.

Abstract

Evidence is reported for the simultaneous production of four charmed particles in interactions induced by 350 GeV/ c π − mesons in stacks of nuclear emulsions. The events were found during a search for beauty particles among a sample of about 200 interactions with candidates for charmed particles. The events selected required the presence of at least one muon with a high component of momentum transverse to the beam direction.

Abstract

The azimuthal correlation distribution of 102 charmed-particle pairs observed in the hybrid emulsion experiment WA75 is compared with theoretical predictions. The various pairs - (D − D 0 ), (D − D + ), (D 0 D 0 ) and (D + D 0 )-all s how, within statistical error, the same azimuthal correlation distribution, demonstrating its independence from the specific nature of the production channel. Among the decays of 150 charged charmed particles and 138 neutral ones seen, higher multiplicities are favoured for hadronic as opposed to semileptonic decays. The data are consistent with the muonic decays of charged D mesons proceeding through the channels (μ ± , v, K 0 ) and [μ ± , v, K ∗0 (892)] , the fraction through K 0 being 0.76±0.06.

Abstract

The production of charmed particles has been detected in 200 GeV per nucleon 16 O-emulsion central interactions. Their production cross section in elementary nucleon-nucleon processes has been estimated to be charm = [14.1±9.3(stat.) −8.4 +5.6 (syst.)] μ b.

Abstract

We give here a detailed description of experiment WA75, which was performed at CERN to search for beauty particles. Events containing at least one muon with a high momentum transverse to the beam direction were selected; then the primary interactions and decay vertices, located in stacks of nuclear research emulsions, were examined and analysed. The various parts of the apparatus are described and the off-line analysis and search in emulsion are discussed. 13. Simultaneous distinct cutaneous fungal infections with chromoblastomycosis due to Exophiala xenobiotica and hyalohyphomycosis due to Scedosporium apiospermum in a patient with severe cellular immunodeficiency.

Abstract

Deep-seated dermatomycosis is a rare disease that is often caused by trauma and/or systemic immunodeficiency. We describe a case of chromoblastomycosis complicated by hyalohyphomycosis that occurred simultaneously at different sites. A 92-year-old Japanese man who had been taking oral prednisolone for an IgG4-related respiratory disease visited our clinic. He developed brownish plaques with grayish-white scales with pseudo-carcinomatous hyperplasia and numerous brownish muriform cells developing in the dermis of his right hand, and multiple painful abscesses with pustules and papules and numerous hyphae within and around the histiocytes in the dermis of his right lower leg. Upon skin tissue culture and DNA sequencing, Exophiala xenobiotica and Scedosporium apiospermum were detected separately. He had severe cellular immunodeficiency indicated by low levels in the phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) and serum interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), although his humoral immunity was normal. The patient died of bacterial pneumonia, despite antifungal drug treatment for 2 months. IFN-γ producing type 1 T helper (Th1) cells play an important role in the defense against fungal infections, however, corticosteroids specifically suppress Th1 cell responses and promote the induction of fungal infection. Measurement of PHA-stimulated LTT and serum IFN-γ may be useful in determining the severity and prognosis of deep-seated dermatomycosis in patients undergoing corticosteroid treatment., (© 2024 Japanese Dermatological Association.)

14. Formation of large abscess tumor including gallstone in ileum during therapy for hyperosmolar hyperglycemic syndrome: a case report.

Abstract

Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic status (HHS) is one of the most serious acute metabolic complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) and the patients with type 2 DM are immunocompromised host, especially when glycemic control is poor. Under hyperglycemic conditions, we have to pay much attention even for rare infection. Bouveret's syndrome is a rare type of gallstone ileus together with duodenal obstruction secondary to the passage of a stone through a cholecystoduodenal fistula. Herein, we reported a rare case with formation of large abscess tumor, including necrotic ileum and gallstone after taking therapy for HHS. She was under more rare conditions rather than Bouveret's syndrome, because large abscess tumor was formed not in the duodenal bulb but in the ileum together with necrotic ileitis and abdominal abscess with impacted gallstone. Abstract

Four hybridoma clones (ACV-1, -3, -4, and -5) were established for Chinemys reevesii (Reeves' turtle) vitellogenin (VTG) as a precursor protein of egg yolk and a biomarker of environmental pollution. Binding-inhibition experiments indicated that the epitopes of four mAbs were distinct. No binding of ACV-4 to C. reevesii VTG in the Western blot suggests that the epitope of ACV-4 would be dependent on the three-dimensional structure. ACV-1, -3, and -5 bound to C. reevesii VTG in the Western blot. The signal for ACV-1 and -5 disappeared by reduction of the VTG, suggesting that the construction of the epitopes for ACV-1 and -5 were dependent on the disulfide bridge in the VTG molecule. All four mAbs recognized Trachemys scripta and Mauremys japonica VTGs in the ELISA. The yolk proteins were tested for the binding of the mAbs in the Western blot. ACV-1 being capable to bind to the VTG in the reduced condition did not bind to any protein bands of the yolk. This indicates that ACV-1 recognizes a part of the VTG molecule that is not incorporated in the oocytes. Both ACV-3 and -5 bound to the 32- and 70-kDa yolk proteins. Since a mAb recognizes only one site (epitope) on a protein molecule, the 32-kDa protein originated from the 70-kDa one. An ELISA system using ACV-5 as the capture antibody and ACV-3 as the detecting antibody showed the lower detectable concentration (2 ng/mL) and a wide detectable range to 1000 ng/mL (R2=0.999). The system was used to determine serum VTG levels of juvenile turtles treated with estradiol-17beta or vehicle (corn oil). By the use of the mAbs described in this paper, basic and applied studies for turtle VTGs would be improved.

16. Selective and delay adaptation of human saccades.

Abstract

The consistently triggered step back of a target during primary saccades of a human subject induced a gradual change in gain, the ratio of the saccade amplitude to the target eccentricity. After a few hundred trials, subjects were able to foveate the displaced target in a single saccade. Presentation of a displaced target showed that human memory guided saccades have gain adaptation just like the well-established adaptation of visually guided saccades. Examining the transfer of adaptation between the memory guided saccade and two other types of visually guided saccades showed that each saccade transferred a 10-25% adapted gain change to the other saccades. However, any pair of the three saccades acquired different gains by adaptation in the same horizontal direction simultaneously, hence each saccade had adaptive capability independent of the others. Adaptation took place even when the appearance of a displaced target was delayed by 400-600 ms from the end of a primary saccade. These findings have important implications about the adaptation, particularly the location and temporal property of the adaptive mechanism in saccade generation.
