Abstract

Abstract JEM-EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAF in the framework of the JEM-EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM-EUSO, POEMMA, K-EUSO, TUS, Mini-EUSO, EUSO-SPB1 and EUSO-TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

Abstract

The High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, located on a Sun-synchronous orbit at 500 km of altitude with an inclination of 97°, features a dedicated logic counting low-energy event rates, which proved sensitive to intense Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB). The present work reports a comprehensive analysis of signals induced by GRBs in the event-rate data collected between 2018 August and 2022 June. After accurately modeling the background rate as observed in different passages of the satellite over the same geographical area, we detected significant deviations to be compared with observations of GRB candidates from other observatories. The analysis revealed 12 statistically significant excesses, that have been associated with GRB 181222B, GRB 190114C, GRB 190129B, GRB 190305A, GRB 190928A, GRB 200412B, GRB 200422A, GRB 200826B, GRB 201009A, GRB 210702A, GRB 211211A, and GRB 220624A. We report light curves for 0.3–50 MeV photons, comparing them with findings from other space telescopes. The catalog of observations is published, complete of GRB observation time, duration, integrated counts, and fluence.

Abstract

The intricate behavior of particle acceleration and transport mechanisms complicates the overall efforts in formulating a comprehensive understanding of solar energetic particle (SEP) events; these efforts include observations of low-energy particles (from tens of keV to hundreds of MeV) by space-borne instruments and measurements by the ground-based neutron monitors of the secondary particles generated in the Earth atmosphere by SEPs in the GeV range. Numerous space-borne missions provided good data on the nature/characteristics of these solar particles in past solar cycles, but more recently—concurrently with the rise toward the maximum of solar cycle 25—the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) proved to be well suited for the study of solar physics and space weather. Its nominal 30–300 MeV energy range for protons can enlarge the detection capabilities of solar particles at low Earth orbit, closer to the injection limit of many SEP events. In this work, we characterize three SEP events within the first six months of 2022 through spectral and velocity dispersion analysis, assessing the response of HEPD-01 to >M1 events.

Abstract

Time-dependent energy spectra of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) carry crucial information regarding their origin and propagation throughout the interstellar environment. When observed at the Earth, after traversing the interplanetary medium, such spectra are heavily affected by the solar wind and the embedded solar magnetic field permeating the inner sectors of the heliosphere. The activity of the Sun changes significantly over an 11 yr solar cycle—and so does the effect on cosmic particles; this translates into a phenomenon called solar modulation. Moreover, GCR spectra during different epochs of solar activity provide invaluable information for a complete understanding of the plethora of mechanisms taking place in various layers of the Sun’s atmosphere and how they evolve over time. The High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) has been continuously collecting data since 2018 August, during the quiet phase between solar cycles 24 and 25; the activity of the Sun is slowly but steadily rising and is expected to peak around 2025/2026. In this paper, we present the first spectra for ∼50–250 MeV galactic protons measured by the HEPD-01 instrument—placed on board the CSES-01 satellite—from 2018 August to 2022 March over a one-Carrington-rotation time basis. Such data are compared to the ones from other spaceborne experiments, present (e.g., EPHIN, Parker Solar Probe) and past (PAMELA), and to a state-of-the-art three-dimensional model describing the GCRs propagation through the heliosphere.

Abstract

High-energy, long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be generated by the core collapse of massive stars at the end of their lives. When they happen in the close-by universe they can be exceptionally bright, as seen from the Earth in the case of the recent, giant, long-lasting GRB221009A. GRB221009A was produced by a collapsing star with a redshift of 0.152: this event was observed by many gamma-ray space experiments, which also detected an extraordinary long gamma-ray afterglow. The exceptionally large fluence of the prompt emission of about 0.013 erg cm ^−2 illuminated a large geographical region centered on India and including Europe and Asia. We report in this paper the observation of sudden electron flux changes correlated with GRB221009A and measured by the HEPP-L charged particle detector on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, which was orbiting over Europe at the time of the GRB event. The time structure of the observed electron flux closely matches the very distinctive time dependence of the photon flux associated with the main part of the emission at around 13:20 UTC on 2022 October 9. To test the origin of these signals, we set up a simplified simulation of one HEPP-L subdetector: the results of this analysis suggest that the signals observed are mostly due to electrons created within the aluminum collimator surrounding the silicon detector, providing real-time monitoring of the very intense photon fluxes. We discuss the implications of this observation for existing and forthcoming particle detectors on low Earth orbits.

Abstract

Abstract Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv, v for variant) is a late-onset, autosomal dominant disease caused by progressive extracellular deposition of transthyretin amyloid fibrils, leading to organ damage and death. For other late-onset fatal diseases, as Huntington’s disease, protocols for pre-symptomatic genetic testing (PST) are available since decades. For ATTRv, limited experience has been reported to date, mostly gathered before the availability of approved therapies. We aimed at developing recommendations for a safe and feasible PST protocol in ATTRv in the era of emerging treatments, taking also into account Italian patients’ characteristics and healthcare system rules. After an initial survey on ongoing approaches to PST for ATTRv in Italy, two roundtable meetings were attended by 24 experts from 16 Italian centers involved in the diagnosis and care of this disease. Minimal requirements for PST offer and potential critical issues were highlighted. By November 2019, 457 families affected by ATTRv with 209 molecularly confirmed pre-symptomatic carriers were counted. The median age at PST was 41.3 years of age, regardless of the specific mutation. Half of the Italian centers had a multidisciplinary team, including a neurologist, an internist, a cardiologist, a medical geneticist and a psychologist, although in most cases not all the specialists were available in the same center. A variable number of visits was performed at each site. Experts agreed that PST should be offered only in the context of genetic counselling to at risk individuals aged 18 or older. Advertised commercial options for DNA testing should be avoided. The protocol should consist of several steps, including a preliminary clinical examination, a pre-test information session, an interval time, the genetic test and a post-test session with the disclosure of the test results, in the context of an experienced multidisciplinary team. Recommendations for best timing were also defined. Protocols for PST in the context of ATTRv can be refined to offer at risk individuals the best chance for early diagnosis and timely treatment start, while respecting autonomous decisions and promoting safe psychological adjustment to the genetic result.

Abstract

In this paper we report the detection of five strong gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) mounted on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, operational since 2018 on a Sun-synchronous polar orbit at a ∼507 km altitude and 97° inclination. HEPD-01 was designed to detect high-energy electrons in the energy range 3–100 MeV, protons in the range 30–300 MeV, and light nuclei in the range 30–300 MeV n ^−1 . Nonetheless, Monte Carlo simulations have shown HEPD-01 is sensitive to gamma-ray photons in the energy range 300 keV–50 MeV, even if with a moderate effective area above ∼5 MeV. A dedicated time correlation analysis between GRBs reported in literature and signals from a set of HEPD-01 trigger configuration masks has confirmed the anticipated detector sensitivity to high-energy photons. A comparison between the simultaneous time profiles of HEPD-01 electron fluxes and photons from GRB190114C, GRB190305A, GRB190928A, GRB200826B, and GRB211211A has shown a remarkable similarity, in spite of the different energy ranges. The high-energy response, with peak sensitivity at about 2 MeV, and moderate effective area of the detector in the actual flight configuration explain why these five GRBs, characterized by a fluence above ∼3 × 10 ^−5 erg cm ^−2 in the energy interval 300 keV–50 MeV, have been detected.

Abstract

Background Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is due to TTR tissue accumulation. Both patients without mutations in the TTR gene (wild–type ATTR, ATTRwt) and those with such mutations (variant ATTR, ATTRv) may develop cardiac amyloidosis (CA). ATTR–CA has a deep impact on the quality of life. The ITALY study aimed 1) to create the first patient–reported outcome measures (PROMs) for ATTRv– and ATTRwt–CA, 2) to assess the feasibility of their administration, 3) to investigate the relationship between score values, clinical and laboratory findings, the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) and Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF–36) scores. Methods Five Italian referral centers were involved (Pisa, Pavia, Ferrara, Florence, Messina). Item selection involved expert clinicians and 2 groups of 10 patients. The questionnaires were administered to consecutive patients evaluated at baseline and 6 months. Results Two 30–items questionnaires were created. Each item has 5 answers graded from 4 (best option) to 0 (worst option). The score ranged from 100 (best condition) to 0 (worst condition). As of November 2022, 82 patients (65 ATTRwt–CA, 17 ATTRv–CA) have completed the follow–up. At baseline, 30% of patients needed help to fill the questionnaire, and 20% at 6 months; 65% completed the questionnaire at baseline and 63% at 6 months. At baseline, median score values were 64 (interquartile range [IR] 54–74) in ATTRwt–CA and 59 (IR 51–71) in ATTRv–CA. ITALY score were correlated with global KCCQ and SF–36 scores at baseline and 6 months (r values from 0.7 to 0.8 in ATTRwt–CA and from 0.5 to 0.7 in ATTRv–CA). In patients with ATTRwt–CA, all KCCQ and SF–36 domains were univariate predictors of ITALY score values at baseline. All the KCCQ and SF–36 domains were independently predictive of ITALY score values in models including age, NYHA class, 6MWT, NT–proBNP; these results were confirmed at 6 months. In ATTRv–CA, All the KCCQ and SF–36 domains were independently predictive of ITALY score values in models including LV ejection fraction, at baseline and at 6 months. Conclusions The ITALY questionnaires are the first specific PROMs for ATTRwt– and ATTRv–CA. They have been created by experts in CA and patients and validated in a multicenter Italian cohort with 2 assessments over 6 months. Questionnaire completion is usually feasible. ITALY scores display close relationships with non–ATTR–specific measures of quality of life (KCCQ and SF–36).

Abstract

Introduction Transthyretin–mediated (ATTR) amyloidosis is a progressive and fatal disease. Patients with hereditary or wild–type ATTR amyloidosis frequently develop cardiomyopathy (CM). Patisiran, an IV RNAi therapeutic that inhibits synthesis of wt and variant TTR, is approved for the treatment of hATTR amyloidosis with polyneuropathy. Methods In APOLLO–B, patients were 18–85 yrs old with evidence of cardiac amyloidosis by echocardiography, ATTR amyloid deposition on tissue biopsy or fulfilling nonbiopsy diagnostic criteria for ATTR amyloidosis with CM, and had prior hospitalization for heart failure (HF) due to ATTR amyloidosis or clinical evidence of HF. Patients were randomized 1:1 to patisiran IV 0.3 mg/kg or placebo Q3W for 12 months. The primary endpoint was change from baseline in 6–MWT at Month 12 (M12) with patisiran vs placebo. Exploratory parameters at M12 included changes in cardiac biomarkers, echocardiography and Tc scintigraphy. Results APOLLO–B enrolled 360 patients (patisiran, n=181; placebo, n=179): median age, 76.0 yrs; male, 89%; wtATTR, 80%; on tafamidis at baseline, 25%. Patisiran showed a significant benefit compared with placebo in 6–MWT (median [95% CI] change from baseline: patisiran, –8.15 [–16.42, 1.50]; placebo, –21.35 [–34.05, –7.52]; HL estimate of median difference: 14.69 [0.69, 28.69]; p=0.0162). Patisiran demonstrated favorable trends in change from baseline of NT–proBNP (mean fold change ratio [95% CI]: 0.80 [0.73, 0.89]; p=1.825×10–5) and troponin I (mean fold change ratio [95% CI]: 0.87 [0.80, 0.95]; p=0.0011) at M12 vs placebo. Patisiran also demonstrated a trend towards benefit in change from baseline of most evaluated echocardiographic parameters at M12 vs placebo. Patisiran–treated patients evaluable for scintigraphy (n=37) experienced a reduction (37.8%) or no change (62.2%) in Perugini grade at M12 compared with baseline. Among placebo patients (n=28) at M12, none experienced a reduction from baseline in Perugini grade, and 1 (3.6%) increased in grade. Patisiran demonstrated an acceptable safety profile; AEs were mostly mild or moderate in severity, and there were no cardiac safety concerns. Conclusions Exploratory analyses after 12 months provide further evidence for the potential benefit of patisiran treatment on cardiac biomarkers and manifestations of cardiac amyloid involvement in patients with ATTR amyloidosis. The long–term impact of patisiran will be assessed in the ongoing APOLLO–B open–label extension.

Abstract

Purpose We described the incidence and ECG factors associated with de novo atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients diagnosed with wild-type transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTRwt-CA) to drive tailored arrhythmia screening. Background Data on the incidence rate and factors associated with de novo AF in patients with ATTRwt-CA is limited. Methods Multicenter, retrospective, observational cohort study performed in six referral centers for CA. All consecutive patients diagnosed with ATTRwt-CA between 2004 and 2020 with >1-year follow up (FU) were enrolled in the study and were divided into three groups according to presence of AF: (1) patients with “known AF”; (2) patients in “sinus rhythm” and (3) patients developing “de novo AF” during FU. Incidence and factors associated with AF in patients with ATTRwt were the primary outcomes. Results Overall, 266 patients were followed for a median of 469 days: 148 (56%) with known AF, 84 (31.6%) with sinus rhythm, and 34 (12.8%) with de novo AF. Age and gender were similarly distributed. At multivariable analysis, PR (Hazard Ratio [HR]: 1.008; 95% CI: 1.001–1.016), QRS (HR: 1.022; 95% CI: 1.002–1.043) and left atrial dilatation >50mm (HR: 3.429, 95% CI: 1.565–7.329) were associated with de novo AF at FU. Patients presenting with at least two risk factors (PR >200ms, QRS >120ms or LAD >50mm) had a higher risk of developing de novo AF compared to patients with no risk factors (HR 14.918; 95% CI: 3.242–31.646). Conclusions Incidence of de novo AF in patients with ATTRwt is 20.7%/year. Longer PR and QRS duration and left atrial dilation are associated with arrhythmia onset. Abstract

This contribution describes the Trigger board of the High-Energy Particle Detector, which will be placed onboard the second China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite for CSES-Limadou mission. This mission will monitor variations in ionospheric parameters that are supposed to be related to earthquakes. The first satellite is already in orbit and the second one will be launched in 2023. The HEPD detector will be composed by a tracker made of CMOS sensors (ALPIDE sensors), followed by two segmented planes of plastic scintillators used for trigger signals generation. The actual calorimeter will be composed by twelve planes of plastic scintillator and two segmented planes of an inorganic scintillator called LYSO. The calorimeter is surrounded by five scintillator planes used as a veto system. All the scintillators are coupled with PMTs, whose signals are acquired and digitized by the Trigger board, that also implements the trigger system for the whole apparatus. The ongoing work on the Trigger board consists in the design of both the hardware and the firmware used for the communication with the other boards of the detector, power managing, and the interfacing with the ASIC used for PMTs’ readout. Eventually the Trigger board will be tested to verify its functionalities and its compliance with the HEPD design specifications. Next developments are the integration of the Trigger board with the other systems on the detector and the environmental testing of the whole system.

Abstract

International audience; The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) instrument was launched out of Wanaka, New Zealand, by NASA in April, 2017 as a mission of opportunity. The detector was developed as part of the Joint Experimental Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory (JEM-EUSO) program toward a space-based ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) telescope with the main objective to make the first observation of UHECRs via the fluorescence technique from suborbital space. The EUSO-SPB1 instrument is a refractive telescope consisting of two 1m$^{2}$ Fresnel lenses with a high-speed UV camera at the focal plane. The camera has 2304 individual pixels capable of single photoelectron counting with a time resolution of 2.5μ s. A detailed performance study including calibration was done on ground. We separately evaluated the properties of the Photo Detector Module (PDM) and the optical system in the laboratory. An end-to-end test of the instrument was performed during a field campaign in the West Desert in Utah, USA at the Telescope Array (TA) site in September 2016. The campaign lasted for 8 nights. In this article we present the results of the preflight laboratory and field tests. Based on the tests performed in the field, it was determined that EUSO-SPB1 has a field of view of 11.1$^{∘}$ and an absolute photo-detection efficiency of 10%. We also measured the light flux necessary to obtain a 50% trigger efficiency using laser beams. These measurements were crucial for us to perform an accurate post flight event rate calculation to validate our cosmic ray search. Laser beams were also used to estimated the reconstruction angular resolution. Finally, we performed a flat field measurement in flight configuration at the launch site prior to the launch providing a uniformity of the focal surface better than 6%.

Abstract

On 25 August 2018, a G3-class geomagnetic storm reached the Earth’s magnetosphere, causing a transient rearrangement of the charged particle environment around the planet, which was detected by the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01). We found that the count rates of electrons in the MeV range were characterized by a depletion during the storm’s main phase and a clear enhancement during the recovery caused by large substorm activity, with the key role played by auroral processes mapped into the outer belt. A post-storm rate increase was localized at L-shells immediately above ∼3 and mostly driven by non-adiabatic local acceleration caused by possible resonant interaction with low-frequency magnetospheric waves.

Abstract

In this paper we present the Data Processor (DP) of EUSO-SPB2 (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon, mission two) telescopes . The EUSO-SPB2 is the continuation of the JEM-EUSO science program on ultra-long duration balloons, started with the EUSO-SPB1 mission. The EUSO-SPB2 will host on-board two telescopes. One is a fluorescence telescope designed to detect high energy cosmic rays via the UV fluorescence emission of the showers in the atmosphere; the other one measures direct Cherenkov light emission from lower energy cosmic rays and other optical backgrounds for cosmogenic tau neutrino detection. The DP is the component of the electronics system which performs data management and instrument control for each of the two telescopes. The DP controls front-end electronics, tags events with arrival time and payload position through a GPS system, provides signals for time synchronization of the event and measures live and dead time of the telescope. Furthermore it manages mass memory for data storage and performs housekeeping monitor and controls the power on and power off sequences. Since a super pressure balloon may remain airborne up to 100 days, the requirements on the electronics and data handling are quite severe. The DP operates at high altitude in unpressurised environment which represents a technological challenge for heat dissipation. Abstract

The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) is an Antarctic balloon-borne mission to indirectly search for dark matter through sensitive observation of cosmic antiparticles. The first flight is planned for late 2021. GAPS is the first experiment optimized specifically for detection of low-energy (< 0.25 GeV/n) antideuterons, which are recognized as distinctive signals from dark matter annihilation or decay in the Galactic halo. To achieve high sensitivity to cosmic antinuclei in this low-energy range, GAPS uses a novel particle identification method based on exotic atom capture and decay. The GAPS instrument consists of ten planes of 1440 10 cm-diameter, 2.5 mm-thick, 8-strip lithium drifted silicon (Si(Li)) detectors, which constitutes the tracker, surrounded by a plastic scintillator time-of-flight system. A new fabrication technique has been developed to satisfy the stringent requirements of the mission. In this contribution, we describe the front-end electronics of the tracker of GAPS. The system is composed of front-end ASICs and power supplies. The ASICs provide readout and digitization of the signal (with an 11-bit ADC) in a wide dynamic range (10 keV - 100 MeV). Every ASIC has 32 channels and performs the readout for 4 detectors, for a total amount of 11520 channels. The ASIC analog front-end is based on a dynamic compression technique to handle a large range of signal amplitudes and features a low noise performance, achieving the required 4 keV resolution at low energies. Abstract

In this paper, the flight software architecture of the EUSO-SPB mission is described. The JEM-EUSO program aims at developing an advanced large space-borne UV telescope designed to detect ultra high energy cosmic rays. In this framework, the EUSO-SPB experiment is the third pathfinder mission of the JEM-EUSO program, the second that has been launched on a stratospheric balloon to test the technological readiness of the detectors and to carry out some preliminary scientific observations. The EUSO-SPB software has a modular structure conceived to control all the instruments and the ancillary subsystems, to acquire data, and to manage data transfer to ground. System programming in C and C++ languages and Bash scripts have been used to implement and run the modules. The software runs on the data processor, an onboard computer that communicates with several payload blocks, the UV sensor, and the synchronization and time tagging board. The control software module controls all the subsystems, provides communication to ground through the NASA telemetry or the Internet, runs the acquisition control and download software, and manages the execution of the acquisition software. The acquisition software module directly operates the subsystems for the data acquisition activity. The acquisition control and download software module runs the acquisition software upon request of the control software and transfers scientific data to ground. Abstract

In this paper we present the Data Processor (DP) and the flight software of the EUSO-SPB1 mission. The EUSO-SPB1 experiment is a pathfinder mission of the EUSO program whose main objective is to detect Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) by measuring, for the first time from space, the fluorescence and the Cerenkov Ultra-Violet light produced by Extensive Air Shower. The instrument is a small telescope mounted on an unpressurized gondola of a super pressure balloon. Since a super pressure balloon could remain airborne up to 100 days, the requirements on the electronics and data handling are quite severe. The DP is the component of the electronics system performing the data handling, the monitoring, and the control of the instrument from ground through the interface with the telemetry system. EUSO-SPB1 was launched from Wanaka Airport (New Zealand) on the 24th of April 2017, at 22:51 UTC and the flight lasted for 12 days.

Abstract

The JEM-EUSO (Joint Experiment Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory) program aims at developing Ultra-Violet (UV) fluorescence telescopes for efficient detections of Extensive Air Showers (EASs) induced by Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) from satellite orbit. In order to demonstrate key technologies for JEM-EUSO, we constructed the EUSO-Balloon instrument that consists of a ∼1 m 2 refractive telescope with two Fresnel lenses and an array of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes at the focus. Distinguishing it from the former balloon-borne experiments, EUSO-Balloon has the capabilities of single photon counting with a gate time of 2.3 µs and of imaging with a total of 2304 pixels. As a pathfinder mission, the instrument was launched for an 8 h stratospheric flight on a moonless night in August 2014 over Timmins, Canada. In this work, we analyze the count rates over ∼2.5 h intervals. The measurements are of diffuse light, e.g. of airglow emission, back-scattered from the Earth's atmosphere as well as artificial light sources. Count rates from such diffuse light are a background for EAS detections in future missions and relevant factor for the analysis of EAS events. We also obtain the geographical distribution of the count rates over a ∼780 km 2 area along the balloon trajectory. In developed areas, light sources such as the airport, mines, and factories are clearly identified. This demonstrates the correct location of signals that will be required for the EAS analysis in future missions. Although a precise determination of count rates is relevant for the existing instruments, the absolute intensity of diffuse light is deduced for the limited conditions by assuming spectra models and considering simulations of the instrument response. Abstract

The radiation belts in the Earth’s magnetosphere pose a hazard to satellite systems and spacecraft missions (both manned and unmanned), heavily affecting payload design and resources, thus resulting in an impact on the overall mission performance and final costs. The NASA AE9/AP9/SPM radiation models for energetic electrons, protons, and plasma provide useful information on the near-Earth environment, but they are still incomplete as to some features and, for some energy ranges, their predictions are not based on a statistically sufficient sample of direct measurements. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to provide new data and direct measurements to improve their output. In this work, the AP9 model is applied to the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01) orbit to estimate the flux of energetic protons over the South Atlantic Anomaly during a short testing period of one day, 1 January 2021. Moreover, a preliminary comparison with proton data obtained from the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) on board CSES-01 is carried out. This estimation will serve as the starting ground for a forthcoming complete data analysis, enabling extensive testing and validation of current theoretical and empirical models.

Abstract

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract

CSES (China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite) is a mission developed by CNSA (Chinese National Space Administration) and ASI (Italian Space Agency), to investigate the near-Earth electromagnetic, plasma and particle environment, for studying the seismo-associated disturbances in the ionosphere-magnetosphere transition zone. The anthropogenic and electromagnetic noise, as well as the natural non-seismic electromagnetic emissions is mainly due to tropospheric activity. In particular, the mission aims to confirming the existence of possible temporal correlations between the occurrence of earthquakes for medium and strong magnitude and the observation in space of electromagnetic perturbations, plasma variations and precipitation of bursts with high-energy charged particles from the inner Van Allen belt. In this framework, the high energy particle detector (HEPD) of the CSES mission has been developed by the Italian LIMADOU Collaboration. HEPD is an advanced detector based on a tower of scintillators and a silicon tracker that provides good energy and angular resolution and a wide angular acceptance, for electrons of 3-100 MeV, protons of 30-200 MeV and light nuclei up to the oxygen. Abstract

EUSO-TA is a ground-based telescope, installed at the Telescope Array (TA) site in Black Rock Mesa, Utah, USA. This is the first detector to successfully use a Fresnel lens based optical system and multi-anode photomultipliers (64 channels per tube, 2304 channels encompassing a 10.6° × 10.6° field of view) for detection of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). The telescope is located in front of one of the fluorescence detectors of the TA experiment. Since its installation in 2013, the detector has observed several ultra-high energy cosmic ray events and, in addition, meteors. The limiting magnitude of 5.5 on summed frames (∼ 3 ms) has been established. Measurements of the UV night sky emission in different conditions and moon phases and positions have been completed. Abstract

The most recent development in the field of photomultipliers operating at liquid Argon temperature is the Hamamatsu R11065 with peak QE up to about 35% A set of these photomultipliers has been extensively tested within the R&D program of the WArP Collaboration. During these tests the Hamamatsu PMTs showed extremely good performance and a light yield around 7 phel/keVee has been achieved in a Liquid Argon detector with a photocathodic coverage of 12%. This shows that this new type of PMT is suited for experimental applications, in particular for new direct Dark Matter searches with LAr-based experiments.

Abstract

The absolute branching ratio of the K+ -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(+) (gamma) decay, inclusive of final-state radiation, has been measured using similar to 17 million tagged K+ mesons collected with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory. The result is: BR(K+ -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(+) (gamma)) = 0.05565 +/- 0.00031(stat) +/- 0.00025(syst) a factor similar or equal to 5 more precise with respect to the previous result. This work completes the program of precision measurements of the dominant kaon branching ratios at KLOE.

Abstract

The China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) aims to monitor electromagnetic, particle, and plasma perturbations in the iono-magnetosphere and inner Van Allen radiation belts originated by electromagnetic sources external and internal to the geomagnetic cavity, cosmic rays, and solar events. In particular, the objective of the space mission is to investigate lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling mechanisms (including the effects of lightning, earthquakes, volcanoes, and artificial electromagnetic emissions) that induce perturbations of the top side of the ionosphere and lower boundary of the radiation belts. To this purpose, the mission has been conceived to take advantage of a multi-instrument payload comprising nine detectors for the measurement of electromagnetic field components, plasma parameters, and energetic particles, as well as X-ray flux. The Italian team participating in the CSES mission has built one of these devices, the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD), for high-precision observations of electrons, protons, and light nuclei. During its trip along the orbit, and thanks to the large set of detectors operated on board, CSES completely monitors the Earth, acting as an excellent instrument for space weather. The satellite was launched on 2018 February 2, with an expected life span of 5 yr. This article describes the CSES mission with a particular focus on the HEPD apparatus and its in-flight performance.

Abstract

International audience; The JEM-EUSO Collaboration aims to study Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) using a novel approach of looking down from space and using the atmosphere as a large detector to achieve a large effective area and therefore high-statistics on these events for the first time. For this purpose we have been developing a series of pathfinders operating from the ground, high altitude balloons and space, all sharing the same electronics, in particular the central data acquisition system. We report on the implementation and successful testing of the first-level trigger (L1) within the FPGA of the photo-detection module (PDM) board, which processes the signals from 36 64-pixel MAPMTs with a time unit of 2.5 μs to detect the passage of light from cosmic ray generated air-showers.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the slope parameter α for the η → 3 π 0 decay, with the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ -factory, based on a background free sample of ∼17 million η mesons produced in ϕ radiative decays. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot we determine α = − 0.0301 ± 0.0035 stat − 0.0035 + 0.0022 syst . The result is in agreement with recent measurements from hadro- and photo-production experiments.

Abstract

We have studied the ϕ → a 0 ( 980 ) γ process with the KLOE detector at the Frascati ϕ-factory DAΦNE by detecting the ϕ → η π 0 γ decays in the final states with η → γ γ and η → π + π − π 0 . We have measured the branching ratios for both final states: Br ( ϕ → η π 0 γ ) = ( 7.01 ± 0.10 ± 0.20 ) × 10 − 5 and ( 7.12 ± 0.13 ± 0.22 ) × 10 − 5 , respectively. We have also extracted the a 0 ( 980 ) mass and its couplings to η π 0 , K + K − , and to the ϕ meson from the fit of the η π 0 invariant mass distributions using different phenomenological models.

Abstract

We have studied the η → π + π − e + e − ( γ ) decay using about 1.7 fb − 1 collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ -factory. This corresponds to about 72 millions η mesons produced in ϕ radiative decays. We have measured the branching ratio, inclusive of radiative effects, with 4% accuracy: BR ( η → π + π − e + e − ( γ ) ) = ( 26.8 ± 0.9 Stat . ± 0.7 Syst . ) × 10 − 5 . We have obtained the first measurement of the CP-odd ππ – ee decay planes angular asymmetry, A ϕ = ( − 0.6 ± 2.5 Stat . ± 1.8 Syst . ) × 10 − 2 .

Abstract

We present the result of a direct search for the decay K S → e + e − , obtained with a sample of e + e − → ϕ → K S K L events produced at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, for an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−1. The search has been performed using a pure K S beam tagged by the simultaneous detection of a K L interaction in the calorimeter. Background rejection has been optimized by using both kinematic and particle identification cuts. We find BR ( K S → e + e − ) 9 × 10 − 9 at 90% CL, which improves by an order of magnitude on the previous best limit.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section σ ( e + e − → π + π − γ ( γ ) ) at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, using events with initial state radiation photons emitted at small angle and inclusive of final state radiation. We present the analysis of a new data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 240 pb−1. We have achieved a reduced systematic uncertainty with respect to previously published KLOE results. From the cross section we obtain the pion form factor and the contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly from two-pion states in the mass range 0.592 M π π 0.975 GeV . For the latter we find Δ π π a μ = ( 387.2 ± 0.5 stat ± 2.4 exp ± 2.3 th ) × 10 −10 .

Abstract

We have studied the e + e − → ω π 0 cross section in the s interval 1000–1030 MeV using the π + π − π 0 π 0 and π 0 π 0 γ final states with a sample of ∼ 600 pb −1 collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE. By fitting the observed interference pattern around M ϕ for both final states, we extract the ratio of the decay widths Γ ( ω → π 0 γ ) / Γ ( ω → π + π − π 0 ) = 0.0897 ± 0.0016 and derive the branching fractions BR ( ω → π + π − π 0 ) = ( 90.24 ± 0.19 ) % , BR ( ω → π 0 γ ) = ( 8.09 ± 0.14 ) % . The parameters describing the e + e − → π + π − π 0 π 0 reaction around M ϕ are also used to extract the branching fraction for the OZI and G-parity violating ϕ → ω π 0 decay: BR ( ϕ → ω π 0 ) = ( 4.4 ± 0.6 ) × 10 −5 .

Abstract

Neutral kaons provide one of the systems most sensitive to quantum mechanics and CPT violation. Models predicting quantum mechanics violation, also related to CPT violation, have been tested at the CPLEAR and KLOE experiments. In this report results of CPLEAR obtained by studying the time evolution of single and two entangled kaons are reviewed. New or improved limits on decoherence and CPT violation parameters have been obtained by KLOE studying the quantum interference in the channel ϕ → K S K L → π + π − π + π − . No deviations from the expectations of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry have been observed.

Abstract

The use of efficient wavelength-shifters from the vacuum-ultraviolet to the photo-sensor's range of sensitivity is a key feature in detectors for Dark Matter search and neutrino physics based on liquid argon scintillation detection. Thin film of Tetraphenyl-butadiene (TPB) deposited onto the surface delimiting the active volume of the detector and/or onto the photosensor optical window is the most common solution in current and planned experiments. Detector design and response can be evaluated and correctly simulated only when the properties of the optical system in use (TPB film + substrate) are fully understood. Characterization of the optical system requires specific, sometimes sophisticated optical methodologies. In this paper the main features of TPB coatings on different, commonly used substrates is reported, as a result of two independent campaigns of measurements at the specialized optical metrology labs of ENEA and University of Tor Vergata. Measured features include TPB emission spectra with lineshape and relative intensity variation recorded as a function of the film thickness and for the first time down to LAr temperature, as well as optical reflectance and transmittance spectra of the TPB coated substrates in the wavelength range of the TPB emission.© 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Abstract

DarkSide-50 is a two phase argon TPC for direct dark matter detection which is installed at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory, Italy. DarkSide-50 has a 50-kg active volume and will make use of underground argon low in 39 Ar. The TPC is installed inside an active neutron veto made with boron-loaded high radiopurity liquid scintillator. The neutron veto is installed inside a 1000 m 3 water Cherenkov muon veto. The DarkSide-50 TPC and cryostat are assembled in two radon-free clean rooms to reduce radioactive contaminants. The overall design aims for a background free exposure after selection cuts are applied. The expected sensitivity for WIMP-nucleon cross section is of the order of 10 −45 cm 2 for WIMP masses around 100 GeV/c 2 . The commissioning and performance of the detector are described. Details of the low-radioactivity underground argon and other unique features of the projects are reported.

Abstract

We present the first observation of quantum interference in the process ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π+π−, using the KLOE detector at the Frascati e+e− collider DAΦNE. From about 5×104 neutral kaon pairs both decaying to π+π− pairs we obtain the distribution of Δt, the difference between the two kaon decay times, which allows testing the validity of quantum mechanics and CPT invariance: no violation of either is observed. New or improved limits on coherence loss and CPT violation are presented.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching ratio of the CP violating decay K L → π + π − performed by the KLOE experiment at the ϕ factory DAΦNE. We use 328 pb −1 of data collected in 2001 and 2002, corresponding to ∼150 million tagged K L mesons. We find BR ( K L → π + π − ) = ( 1.963 ± 0.012 stat . ± 0.017 syst . ) × 10 −3 . This branching ratio measurement is fully inclusive of final-state radiation. Using the above result, we determine the modulus of the amplitude ratio | η + − | to be ( 2.219 ± 0.013 ) × 10 −3 and | ϵ | to be ( 2.216 ± 0.013 ) × 10 −3 .

Abstract

We present a measurement of the K–π vector current form-factor parameters for the decay K L → π ± e ∓ ν . We use 328 pb−1 of data collected in 2001 and 2002, corresponding to ∼2 million K e 3 events. Measurements of semileptonic form factors provide information about the dynamics of the strong interaction and are necessary for evaluation of the phase-space integral I K e needed to measure the CKM matrix element | V u s | for K L → π ± e ∓ ν decays. Our result is λ + = ( 28.6 ± 0.5 ± 0.4 ) × 10 −3 for a linear fit, and λ + ′ = ( 25.5 ± 1.5 ± 1.0 ) × 10 −3 , λ + ″ = ( 1.4 ± 0.7 ± 0.4 ) × 10 −3 for a quadratic fit.

Abstract

Among some 400 million K S K L pairs produced in e + e − annihilations at DAΦNE, ∼6500 each of K S → π + e − ν ¯ and K S → π − e + ν decays have been observed with the KLOE detector. From these, the ratio Γ ( K S → π e ν ) / Γ ( K S → π + π − ) = ( 10.19 ± 0.13 ) × 10 −4 is obtained, improving the accuracy on BR ( K S → π e ν ) by a factor of four and providing the most precise test of the Δ S = Δ Q rule. From the partial width Γ ( K S → π e ν ) , a value for f + K 0 ( 0 ) × V u s is obtained that is in agreement with unitarity of the quark-mixing matrix. The lepton charge asymmetry A S = ( 1.5 ± 9.6 stat ± 2.9 syst ) × 10 −3 is compatible with the requirements of CPT invariance. The form-factor slope agrees with recent results from semileptonic K L and K + decays. These are the first measurements of the charge asymmetry and form-factor slope for semileptonic K S decays.

Abstract

We measured, with the KLOE detector, the spectrum of π + π − invariant mass in a sample of 6.7 × 10 5 e + e − → π + π − γ events with the photon at large polar angle ( θ γ > 45 ° ) at a centre of mass energy s around the ϕ mass. We observe in this spectrum a clear contribution from the intermediate process ϕ → f 0 ( 980 ) γ . A sizeable effect is also observed in the distribution of the pion forward–backward asymmetry. We use different theoretical models to fit the spectrum and we determine the f0 mass and coupling constants to the ϕ, to π + π − and to K K ¯ .

Abstract

From a sample of about 10 9 ϕ mesons produced at DAΦNE, we have selected K L mesons tagged by observing K S → π + π − decays. We present results on the major K L branching ratios, including those of the semileptonic decays needed for the determination of | V u s | . These branching ratio measurements are fully inclusive with respect to final-state radiation. The K L lifetime has also been measured.

Abstract

We have searched for the decay K S → 3 π 0 with the KLOE experiment at DA Φ NE using data from e + e − collisions at a center of mass energy W ∼ m ϕ c 2 for an integrated luminosity L = 450 pb −1 . The search has been performed with a pure K S beam obtained by tagging with K L interactions in the calorimeter and detecting six photons. We find an upper limit for the branching ratio of 1.2 × 10 −7 at 90% C.L.
