1. Detection of multiple mycotoxin occurrences in soy animal feed by traditional mycological identification combined with molecular species identification

Abstract

Soy products are a main component of animal feed. Because mycotoxins may harm farm animals, undermining productivity and health, a mycological and toxigenic screening was carried out on 36 batches used in animal feed, collected in 2008, 2009 and 2010 in Italy. The investigated mycoflora of a subset of soy seed (n = 6) suggested that Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp. frequently colonize soy seeds. Aflatoxins, fumonisins and deoxynivalenol were detected in 88.9%, 72.2% and 30.6% of samples, respectively. Co-occurrence of at least two toxins was observed in 72% of cases. The molecular analysis of the Fusarium spp. population identified Fusarium verticillioides as potential producers of fumonisins, but no known deoxynivalenol producers were detected. It is suggested that the widespread presence of toxins can be due to non-optimal storing conditions of the feed. Moreover, our results suggest that mycotoxin thresholds should be adapted to consider the frequent case of toxin co-occurrence. This approach would better reflect the real toxigenic risk of feedstuffs.

A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. The degree of the fractional derivative of the heat flux, α, is defined through the power balance analysis of the steady state. The model was used to obtain the experimental values of α for a large database of the Joint European Torus (JET) carbon-wall as well as ITER like-wall plasmas. 5. Radio multifrequency observations of the galaxy cluster pair Abell 399 − 401 with WSRT

Abstract

Galaxy clusters are assembled via merging of smaller structures, in a process that generates shocks and turbulence in the intra cluster medium and produces radio diffuse emission in the form of halos and relics. The cluster pair A 399–A 401 represents a special case: both clusters host a radio halo. Recent Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) observations at 140 MHz revealed the presence of a radio bridge connecting the two clusters along with two relic candidates. These relics include one South of A 399 and the other in between the two clusters, in proximity of a shock front detected in X-ray observations. In this paper we present observations of the A 399–A 401 cluster pair at 1.7, 1.4, 1.2 GHz, and 346 MHz from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). We detect the radio halo in the A 399 cluster at 346 MHz, extending up to ∼650 kpc and with a 125 ± 6 mJy flux density. Its spectral index between 140 MHz and 346 MHz is α = 1.75 ± 0.14. The two candidate relics are also seen at 346 MHz and we determine their spectral indices to be α = 1.10 ± 0.14 and α = 1.46 ± 0.14. The low surface brightness bridge connecting the two clusters is below the noise level at 346 MHz therefore we constrain the bridge average spectral index to be steep, i.e. α > 1.5 at 95 per cent confidence level. This result favours the scenario where dynamically-induced turbulence is a viable mechanism to reaccelerate a population of mildly relativistic particles and amplify magnetic fields on scales of a few Mpcs.

6. Dandy-Walker malformation and variants: clinical features and associated anomalies in 28 affected children-a single retrospective study and a review of the literature

Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics, the neuroimaging features and associated anomalies observed in children affected by Dandy–Walker malformations (DWM) and variants (DWV) in a single tertiary hospital in Catania and compare our data to their existent in the literature. Methods A retrospective case series using the medical records has been performed on 28 children diagnosed with DWM and DWV admitted to a single tertiary section of Pediatric Neurology, Department of Catania, Italy from January 2005 to January 2021. We reviewed the neuroimaging using the new diagnostic criteria of Klein et al. Results Associated anomalies were frequently reported. Among these, hydrocephalus was found in 13/28 (48%), and hydrocephalus plus corpus callosum anomalies in three children (10%). We described corpus callosum, cardiac and genitourinary anomalies in 2/28 (7%), 3/28 (10%), and 3/28 (10%), respectively. The most common clinical features were the developmental delay and epilepsy observed in 19/28 (67%) and in 9/28 (32%) of the cases. The first exam at the diagnosis was MRI in 17/28 patients, followed by transfontanellar ultrasound in 5/28, computed tomography in 4/28 and prenatal ultrasound in 2/28. To note, a child with DWM was affected by Down syndrome and one by congenital disorders of N-linked glycosylation (CDG-IId). Conclusions Children with DWV were more commonly observed than children with DWM. Hydrocephalus is an anomaly, frequently and equally reported in both DWM and DMV. Perinatal complications were frequent adverse events with severe respiratory distress and need for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Cognitive involvement and epilepsy were the most common comorbidities. Single DWV is associated with a better developmental outcome.

Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics and neuroimaging features of childhood presenting with gray matter heterotopia observed in a single tertiary Pediatric Department in Catania and compare the data with those reported in the literature. Methods A retrospectively review of the history, clinical findings, electrophysiological features and magnetic resonance images of 22 children presenting with gray matter heterotopia observed from January 2010 to January 2020. Results Among the 22 children included in the study, 17 presented with periventricular heterotopia (PVNH), two with Subcortical Band Heterotopia (SBH), and three with other subcortical heterotopia (SUBH). In the affected children, the ages at first diagnosis ranged from 3 months to 16 years with a mean age of 8.2 years (± 5.4); twelve (54.5%) suffered by developmental delay and intellectual deficit; eleven children (50%) complained of epileptic seizures, mostly focal to bilateral tonic–clonic seizure. In addition, in the periventricular heterotopia group (PVNH), cerebral and systemic malformations were reported in twelve (70%) and in ten (58%) children, respectively, out of seventeen. In the SBH plus SUBH group, epileptic seizures were recorded in 3 (60%) out of 5 children, cerebral malformations in one child and systemic malformations in two children. Conclusions Heterotopic gray matter malformations include a group of disorders that manifest with a variety of neurological implications, such as cognitive impairment and epilepsy, and often related with epilepsy, other cerebral malformations and systemic anomalies.

Il contributo, sotto forma di extended abstract, analizza la collocazione delle dichiarazioni non finanziarie (DNF, introdotte con il D. Lgs. 254/2016) nell’ambito dell’informativa esterna d’impresa e, sulla base delle prime risultanze emerse, evidenzia - con riferimento al settore economico individuato (energia) - un quadro generale con limitati elementi di confronto sia avuto riguardo alle due annualità considerate (DNF 2017 e DNF 2018), sia avuto riguardo alle diverse società selezionate. Conformemente ad altre analisi effettuate, l'opzione "stand alone" di presentazione della dichiarazione non finanziaria è la scelta più diffusa tra le aziende del campione selezionato e ciò indipendentemente dalla loro dimensione. La scelta di collocazione della DNF non risulta essere influenzata da fattori esterni (come il settore di appartenenza) o dalle precedenti esperienze di rendicontazione. L'opzione "stand alone" ha fornito alle aziende la possibilità di utilizzare la DNF come strumento di comunicazione autonomo delle performance di sostenibilità non finanziaria. L'analisi evidenzia altresì come non sia ancora una prassi diffusa dichiarare le omission nel rispetto di quanto richiesto dalle Linee Guida GRI

Abstract

A method for the computation of magnetostatic fields in presence of magnetic materials using closed formulas, implemented on GPU architectures, is proposed. The magnetic material is first decomposed into subdomains with suited shapes, the magnetization map is then computed, and finally magnetic field is evaluated. To solve the non linear mutual interactions among subdomains, an iterative process is requested. Thanks to the availability of semi-analytical expressions, strong computational reductions can be achieved.

Abstract

We present the Multifrequency Snapshot Sky Survey (MSSS), the first northern-sky LOFAR imaging survey. In this introductory paper, we first describe in detail the motivation and design of the survey. Compared to previous radio surveys, MSSS is exceptional due to its intrinsic multifrequency nature providing information about the spectral properties of the detected sources over more than two octaves (from 30 to 160 MHz). The broadband frequency coverage, together with the fast survey speed generated by LOFAR's multibeaming capabilities, make MSSS the first survey of the sort anticipated to be carried out with the forthcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA). Two of the sixteen frequency bands included in the survey were chosen to exactly overlap the frequency coverage of large-area Very Large Array (VLA) and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) surveys at 74 MHz and 151 MHz respectively. The survey performance is illustrated within the "MSSS Verification Field" (MVF), a region of 100 square degrees centered at J2000 (RA,Dec)=(15h,69deg). The MSSS results from the MVF are compared with previous radio survey catalogs. We assess the flux and astrometric uncertainties in the catalog, as well as the completeness and reliability considering our source finding strategy. We determine the 90% completeness levels within the MVF to be 100 mJy at 135 MHz with 108" resolution, and 550 mJy at 50 MHz with 166" resolution. Images and catalogs for the full survey, expected to contain 150,000-200,000 sources, will be released to a public web server. We outline the plans for the ongoing production of the final survey products, and the ultimate public release of images and source catalogs., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures. Abstract

Since 1996, the Emilia-Romagna Region has been promoting screening programmes for cervical cancer, selecting resident women aged 25-64 as a target population. This analysis concerns a second round of screening performed in the city of Ferrara and its province. A total of 103,971 women were invited to be screened, but only 55.51% of them arrived on the day of the scheduled screening. We therefore decided to investigate the reasons for this lack of participation using preliminary findings from the local screening program registry. These indicated that non-attendance was related to variables such as area of residence and age, and significant differences were observed between localities, with a consistently greater participation in industrial neighbourhoods and their surroundings than in rural areas. In order to elucidate these observations further, a cross-sectional survey, placing special emphasis on setting, area of residence, age and level of education, was performed by structured telephone questionnaire, in order to identify the reasons behind non-attendance. Approximately 94% of the contacted women agreed to be interviewed, thereby demonstrating that a telephone interview is a valid means of collecting data in such cases. It should be noted that, among the women unwilling to respond to the questionnaire, a marked increase in percentage was observed for those resident in rural areas, of whom approximately 50% fell into the under-40 age group. The results of the survey indicated, as demonstrated by several previous studies, that age and the area of residence are both determining factors in the decision or not to participate in a screening programme. It was also observed that women who had completed the lower and upper secondary school education were shown to pay greater attention to health matters than those who had not.

Abstract

The existence of double-double radio galaxies (DDRGs) is evidence for recurrent jet activity in AGN, as expected from standard accretion models. A detailed study of these rare sources provides new perspectives for investigating the AGN duty cycle, AGN-galaxy feedback, and accretion mechanisms. Large catalogues of radio sources provide statistical information about the evolution of the radio-loud AGN population out to high redshifts. Using wide-field imaging with the LOFAR telescope, we study both a well-known DDRG as well as a large number of radio sources in the field of view. We present a high resolution image of the DDRG B1834+620 obtained at 144 MHz using LOFAR commissioning data. Our image covers about 100 square degrees and contains over 1000 sources. The four components of the DDRG B1834+620 have been resolved for the first time at 144 MHz. Inner lobes were found to point towards the direction of the outer lobes, unlike standard FR~II sources. Polarized emission was detected in the northern outer lobe. The high spatial resolution allows the identification of a large number of small double-lobed radio sources; roughly 10% of all sources in the field are doubles with a separation smaller than 1 arcmin. The spectral fit of the four components is consistent with a scenario in which the outer lobes are still active or the jets recently switched off, while emission of the inner lobes is the result of a mix-up of new and old jet activity. From the presence of the newly extended features in the inner lobes of the DDRG, we can infer that the mechanism responsible for their formation is the bow shock that is driven by the newly launched jet. We find that the density of the small doubles exceeds the density of FR-II sources with similar properties at 1.4 GHz, but this difference becomes smaller for low flux densities., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The aldol reaction is one of the most important ways to construct carbon-carbon bonds in organic synthesis. Nature itself seems to prefer this reaction in its biosynthetic processes, for example, in the prebiotic formation of saccharides [1]. Strictly speaking, the aldol reaction is the self-coupling of an aldehyde, having at least one active hydrogen in the α-position, to give a β-hydroxyaldehyde called an aldol (aldol addition), which sometimes dehydrates (aldol condensation).

Abstract

Recently the major advances in B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) have been in defining biological characteristics and prognostic criteria. However it remains to be established which is the best therapeutic approach following the first line treatment, particularly when the patients are completely unresponsive to the standard treatment using Chlorambucil (CHL) and Prednisone (PDN) and the disease is progressive. We report the results of a combination regimen using Cytosine-Arabinoside (ARA-C), Cyclophosphamide (CTX) and PDN in 19 B-CLL patients with advanced disease, resistant to CHL + PDN. The treatment schedules were as follows: Schedule A) ARA-C 60mg/sqm from day 1 to 4 s.c., CTX 75 mg/sqm from day 1 to 4 i.v., PDN 40 mg/sqm from day 1 to 4 p.o.: courses were repeated every 4 weeks for 6 months; Schedule B) ARA-C 100 mg/sqm from day 1 to 7 s.c., CTX 100 mg/sqm from day 8 to 14 i.v., PDN 40 mg/sqm from day 1 to 21 p.o.: courses were repeated every 4 weeks for 6 months. Fourteen pts were treated with schedule A and 5 pts with schedule B. We observed 9 partial remissions (PR), 5 cases with no response and 5 patients with progression. The median duration of PR is 20 months and two patients remain in PR after 18 and 60 months, respectively. The combination of ARA-C, CTX plus PDN is highly effective in advanced stages and in pretreated B-CLL but we need larger randomized studies to draw more definitive conclusions.

Abstract

The aim of this work was to define the typical sensory profile of DOP Mozzarella di Bufala Campana cheese as related to the technological process (industrial or artisanal), the geographical area (Salerno or Caserta), the season (spring or summer) and to the chemical composition of both milk and cheese. The results obtained showed that the sensorial profile of Mozzarella DOP changed for each variable considered. In particular, Caserta samples were more salty, with a more intense butter odour, higher peelability and homogeneity surface than those from Salerno area; the industrial samples, compared to the artisanal ones, were more salty, hard and “chewable”, and exhibited an external layer more difficult to remove and more homogeneous.

Abstract

Two new solutions to Einstein's field equations are presented which are valid for the case of slow rotation. These new solutions represent uniformly rotating spheres which may be of use as neutron star and pulsar models. One solution is a family of fluid spheres which have vanishing pressure at the surface. It is not necessary to introduce a discontinuous region over which the pressure is brought to zero as is the case with solutions based on the polytropic equation of state of Misner and Zapolsky. The second solutions depicts a uniformly rotatin sphere composed of solid matter of constant density. This solution represents the most compact mass undergoing slow rotation possible within the framework of general relativity. Any pulsar safisfying the conditions of slow rotation and requiring parameters based on a more compact object must of necessity be a black hole. The matching of these solutions to form neutron stars with both solid and fluid components is considered.
