1. High optical spin-filtering in antiferromagnetic stanene nanoribbons induced by band bending and uniaxial strain

Abstract

Abstract Non-equilibrium spin-polarized transport properties of antiferromagnetic stanene nanoribbons are theoretically studied under the combining effect of a normal electric field and linearly polarized irradiation based on the tight-binding model at room temperature. Due to the existence of spin-orbit coupling in stanene lattice, applying normal electric field leads to splitting of band degeneracy of spin-resolved energy levels in conduction and valence bands. Furthermore, unequivalent absorption of the polarized photons at two valleys which is attributed to an antiferromagnetic exchange field results in unequal spin-polarized photocurrent for spin-up and spin-down components. Interestingly, in the presence of band bending which has been induced by edge potentials, an allowable quantum efficiency occurs over a wider wavelength region of the incident light. It is especially important that the variation of an exchange magnetic field generates spin semi-conducting behavior in the bended band structure. Moreover, it is shown that optical spin-filtering effect is obtained under the simultaneous effect of uniaxial strain and narrow edge potential.

Abstract

IntroductionRice is the fourth most consumed grain worldwide. In recent years, monitoring the area under rice cultivation; as a strategic crop in Gilan province has become more important because of the uncontrolled migration of residents of the southern provinces to it. Remote sensing is one of the practical tools to study the trend of changes in the area under cultivation of agricultural and horticultural products on a large scale and in a short time. This technique can help policymakers to make true and timely decisions. The aim of this study is to estimate the area under rice cultivation in Kiashahr county of Gilan province.Materials and MethodsThe images of the TM sensor of Landsat 5 satellite and the OLI sensor of Landsat 8 satellite were used to prepare land use maps. First, geometric and atmospheric corrections were made to the images. Then, supervised classification using the maximum likelihood algorithm was used to prepare land use maps for each year. Seven main classes/land covers, based on the available data of the area were determined: rice-land, semi-dense forest, sparse forest, built-up area (towns and other urbanized areas), waterbody, sandy area and other areas. Then, the area of each land use was calculated by GIS, and their changes were compared.Results and DiscussionOverall accuracy and kappa coefficient of classification were 98.45% and 0.98 for 2000, 97.59% and 0.97 for 2010, and 98.72% and 0.98 for 2020, respectively. According to the results, rice land area decreased by 4.42% from 2000 to 2010. It also had a decrease of 2.64% between 2010 and 2020. In total, rice lands decreased by 6.94% between 2000 and 2020, so its area has decreased to 10311.69 hectares. This downward trend can be due to the conversion of rice land to the built-up area. The area of semi-dense forest decreased by 47.48% between 2000 and 2010, but its downward trend decreased to 26.36% between 2010 and 2020. In total, semi-dense forest area decreases by 61.32%, equal to 682.25 hectares over a period of 20 years. This is due to the uncontrolled cutting of trees and the change of land use from semi-dense forests to sparse forests and built-up areas. Also, during this period, built-up areas and sparse forests have grown by 67.94% and 18.73%, respectively. But, semi-dense forests, water bodies and sandy areas have decreased by 61.32%, 4.91% and 61.48%, respectively.ConclusionThe reduction rate in the area of rice land and semi-dense forest classes between 2010 and 2020 was lower than the ten-year period before, which can be attributed to the adoption of restrictive laws and more inspections by relevant organizations. However, the downward trends in these land uses have continued over the past decade. Meanwhile, the increase of 67.94% of built-up lands indicates that the lost lands in the forest and rice land classes have been converted into the built-up area. The rate of land-use change in the built-up class has the highest rate among the studied classes. This result indicates the need for serious attention to land-use change in the rural area more than before. Another point is that there was a growth in sparse forests between 2000 and 2010, and then a reverse trend was observed between 2010 and 2020, which shows that in a period of 10 years, deforestation has taken place, and in 10 years later, the lands from these destructions have been converted to the built-up area. As a result, serious attention to natural resource organizations is necessary. It is considered that there was a deliberate destruction of forests over time with the aim of personal profit.

3. Electric field induced pure spin-photo current in zigzag stanene and germanene nanoribbons

Abstract

Abstract The spin-photo current in single layer stanene and germanene under a linearly polarized light is theoretically investigated based on the tight-binding Hamiltonian combined with the nonequilibrium Green’s function at room temperature. The results show that by considering the simultaneous effect of the linear illumination and a vertical external electric field without any magnetic exchange element, pure spin-photo current without charge current is generated in two-dimensional lattices with a large intrinsic spin–orbit coupling. The necessity of enhanced spin life-time for detection of spin polarization can be explained by spin-valley locking concept. Spin-valley locking arises in buckled two-dimensional materials as a result of the large spin–orbit coupling and electric-field reversible valley spin polarization. Equal absorption of the linearly illumination at both valleys with different spin polarization, leads to pure spin-photo current injection. In addition, an acceptable photoresponsivity has been reported in a broad range of photon energy. The numerical results indicate high quantum efficiency with a maximum of nearly 83% and 50% for stanene and germanene, respectively. This work may pave theoretical reference toward design of new spin-optoelectronic devices based on satanene and germanene junctions with high performance.

Abstract

For a graph G = (V,E), a double Roman dominating function has the property that for every vertex with f(v) = 0, either there exists a vertex , with f(u) = 3, or at least two neighbors having f(x) = f(y) = 2, and every vertex with value 1 under f has at least a neighbor with value 2 or 3. The weight of a DRDF is the sum . A DRDF f is called independent if the set of vertices with positive weight under f, is an independent set. The independent double Roman domination number is the minimum weight of an independent double Roman dominating function on G. Abstract

Objective: The molecular approach of millenary notion about hot and cold temperaments (mizaj) in plants according to Avicenna concepts is not investigated. The aim of this study is to analyze the correlation between mizaj property of plants from the Tajikistan area and their amount/quality of metal. Methods: We analyzed the presence of several metals that implicated in body’s homeostasis integrity, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, in several edible plants (n=23) from different regions in Tajikistan. Samples (n=43) of plant’s parts including seeds, flower, leaf, stem and root were analyzed for their elements’ composition using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX) which incorporates Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results: We didn’t find any correlation between the area of the collected samples and the amount of metal absorbance by the plants. The metals distributions of plant’s parts varied from one to the other. In this study, we found strict correlation between the amount of magnesium and the temperament properties of the plants reported by Avicenna. The magnesium was detected in high amount in Achillea millefolium L., Rosa canina L., Coriandrum sativum L., Foeniculum vulgare Mill. and Nigella sativa L. Conclusion: The presence of high concentration of magnesium in the edible plants can be considered as a metal contribution (factor) in hot mizaj property and may lead to energy regeneration and wellbeing after consumption.

Abstract

Fusobacterium nucleatum has been increasingly implicated as a causative agent of various diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Moreover, the gastrointestinal tracts of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) also have been shown to be colonized by this bacterium. We aimed to determine the prevalence of F. nucleatum among CRC and non-CRC Iranian patients and to investigate potential associations between fadA-positive F. nucleatum and diagnosed CRC cases. Eighty patients admitted to two main hospitals in Tehran, Iran, were enrolled. The patients were aged between 20 and 75 and were diagnosed by a gastroenterologist. A trained surgeon used standard surgical protocols to collect two CRC biopsy samples per patient. One of the samples was used for pathologic examination, and the other was subjected to DNA extraction and PCR. Lesion colonization by F. nucleatum and expression of its major virulence factor, fadA, were investigated. The fadA-positive F. nucleatum strain was absent in all the lesions obtained from non-CRC patients. Abstract

Background: Analysis of hospital cost is one of the key subjects for resource allocation. The Activity – based costing is an applicable tool to recognize accurate costs .This technique helps to determine costs. The aim of this study is utilizing activity activity-based costing method to estimate the cost of dialysis unit related to Shahid Rajaei hospital in year 2015. Methods: The type of this research is applied and sectioned descriptive study. The required data is collected from dialysis unit , accounting unit, discharge, the completion of medical equipments of Shahid Rajaei hospital in the first six months 2015 which was calculated cost by excel software. Results and Conclusion: In any month, the average 1238 patients accepted to receive the dialysis services in Shahid Rajaei hospital .The cost of consumables materials was 47.6%, which is the majority percentage of allocated costs. The lowest cost related to insurance deductions about 2.27%. After Calculating various costs of dialysis services, we find out, the personal cost covers only 32% of the all cost. The other ongoing overhead cost is about 11.94% of all cost. Therefore, any dialysis service requires 2.017.131 rial costs, however the tariff of any dialysis service is 1.838.871 rial. So, this center loses 178,260 rial in each session. The results show that the cost of doing any dialysis services is more than the revenue of it in Shahid Rajaei hospital. It seems that the reforming processes of supplying consumable, changing the tariffs in chronic dialysis; especially in set the filter and consumable materials unit besides controlling the cost of human resource could decrease the cost of this unit with Regard to the results recommended using capacity of the private department recommended.

9. Life table parameters and digestive enzymes activity of Helicoverpa armigera (Lep.: Noctuidae) on different tomato cultivars

Abstract

The tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), is a destructive insect pest of many host crops in Iran and worldwide. The effect of different tomato cultivars (SUN 6108 f1, Rio grande UG, Korral, CH falat, Hed rio grande and Cal JN3) was studied on life table parameters of H. armigera under laboratory (25 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16: 8 (L: D) hours), and on the activity of some digestive enzymes of its sixth larval instars under field conditions. The larval period was longest on Hed rio grande (35.500 ± 1.340 days) and shortest on Korral (24.290 ± 0.688 days). The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) ranged from 0.094 ± 0.003 to 0.159 ± 0.002 (day-1), which was lowest on Rio grande UG and highest on Korral. The larvae reared on the leaves of SUN 6108 f1 showed the highest amylolytic activity (0.062 ± 0.00004 mU mg-1), whereas the lowest activity was in the larvae fed on the leaves of Cal JN3 (0.027 ± 0.00004 mU mg-1) and Korral (0.027 ± 0.0001 mU mg-1). The amylolytic activity of larvae fed on the fruits of tomato cultivars was highest on Cal JN3 (0.047 ± 0.0001 mU mg-1). Also, the highest general proteolytic activity of H. armigera was in the larvae reared on the leaves of Hed rio grande (3.235 ± 0.004 U mg-1) and fruits of Rio grande UG (2.757 ± 0.135 U mg-1). It could be concluded that Rio grande UG is unsuitable host for the growth and development of H. armigera.

10. Comparison of addicts personal/Social motives and social Capital among treatment groups in city of Isfahan

Abstract

The Purpose of this article was comparison of addiction treatment motives and social capital among treating addicts at city of Isfahan. In this survey, statistical population consist of all addicts in city of Isfahan who were under treatment as member in Narcotics Anonymous. Therapeutic community, Methadone maintenance Therapy, and camps. Statistical sample included 300 addicts under treatment who were selected randomly based on type and place of treatment in 1388. Research instrument was a self-made questionnaire including three sections of intergroup, intergroup social capital and personal/social motives. Results from manova using spss 16 showed that there was significant difference between treatment samples based on official trust, informal trust (P.05), generalized trust, belonging and inter groups social capital (P.01) , but there showed no difference among treatment samples interms of general trust, participation, and inter groups social capital. Findings showed that there was no significant difference among treatment sample with regard to social motives, but it was significant for personal motives (P.01). In indices of formal trust, informal trust, inter group social capital, MM, and in participation indices, belonging and social motive, NA; and in intergroup social capital, TC had most average. In this research, history and type of possible past treatment were not studied, but it seems that are mostly personal. On this basis, individualism in community is prevailing while participation in social affairs is declining and social capital is not applied in treatment of addicts. Hence, there is need for planning and logical cooperation of different social organizations and institutions to pay more attention to social health and treatment. This article emphasize the role of non-government institution cooperation in developing social capital and their effect on preventing ways based on social approaches.

برخی پارامترهای زیستی کرم غوزه پنبه، Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) روی هیبریدهای مختلف ذرت (SC700، SC704، SC500، DC370 و SC260) در قالب رژیم غذای مصنوعی تحت شرایط آزمایشگاهی (دمای 1 ± 25 درجه سلسیوس، رطوبت نسبی 5 ± 65 درصد و دوره نوری 16 ساعت روشنایی و 8 ساعت تاریکی) بررسی شد. لاروهای پرورش‌یافته روی هیبرید SC700 طولانی‌ترین دوره رشدی قبل از بلوغ (21/41 روز)، کم‌ترین باروری روزانه (90/100 روز) و کم‌ترین شاخص زیستی (69/0 گرم در روز) را نشان دادند. براساس نتایج به‌دست آمده، هیبرید SC700 میزبان نامناسبی برای رشد و نموکرم غوزه پنبه بود.

Abstract Background and purpose: The genus Phlomis and Stachys (Labiatae) are widely distributed in Iran. There are no reports on the antimicrobial activity of some of these plants. The medicinal properties attributed to the genus Phlomis and Stachys prompted us to investigate the antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extracts of Phlomis bruguieri, P. herba-venti, P. olivieri, Stachys byzantina, S. inflata, S. lavandulifolia and S. laxa.Materials and Methods: The antimicrobial activity of these plants were studied using the disc diffusion method (10,50,100, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 µg/disc) and determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values (10 µg/ml to 25 mg/ml) against Staphylococcus aureus PTCC 1112, Streptococcus sanguis PTCC 1449, Escherichia coli PTCC 1330, Pseudomonas aeroginosa PTCC 1074, Klebsiella pneumoniae PTCC 1053, Aspergilus niger PTCC 5011 and Candida albicans PTCC 5027.Results: The methanolic extracts of the aerial parts of Phlomis bruguieri, P. herba-venti, P. olivieri, Stachys byzantina, S. inflata, S. lavandulifolia and S. laxa exhibited concentration-dependent antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria. The methanolic extracts were more active against Gram-positive microorganisms (Streptococcus sanguis and Staphylococcus aureus). The extracts did not show any antifungal activity.Conclusion: The results concluded that the methanolic extracts of these plants have a potential source of antibacterial of natural origin.

Abstract

Lipoprotein(a), an LDL variant, has been claimed to have a role in atherogenesis and therefore coronary artery disease (CAD). However, its production and atherogenecity seems to vary among ethnic groups. In order to study the possible correlation between levels of Lp(a) and CAD in Iranian patients who suffered myocardial infarction (MI), a case-control study was carried out on 120 MI patients and 120 matched healthy subjects. Levels of Lp(a) were significantly higher in the MI patients than the control group (P < 0.0001), which demonstrates a possible correlation between levels of Lp(a) and CAD. Estimation of Lp (a) may be helpful in evaluating the risk of CAD, particularly in those patients with borderline levels of triglycerides and cholesterol.

This paper deals with some of the algebraic properties of Sierpi\'nski graphs and a family of regular generalized Sierpi\'nski graphs. For the family of regular generalized Sierpi\'nski graphs, we obtain their spectrum and characterize those graphs that are Cayley graphs. As a by-product, a new family of non-Cayley vertex-transitive graphs, and consequently, a new set of non-Cayley numbers are introduced. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a double roman dominating function (DRDF) is a function $f : V \longrightarrow \{0, 1, 2,3\}$ having the property that if $f(v)=0$ for some vertex $v$, then $v$ has at least two neighbors assigned $2$ under $f$ or one neighbor $w$ with $f(w)=3$, and if $f(v)=1$ then $v$ has at least one neighbor $w$ with $f(w) \geq 2$. The weight of a DRDF $f$ is the sum $f (V) =\sum_{u\in V} f (u)$. The minimum weight of a DRDF on a graph $G$ is the double Roman domination number of $G$ and is denoted by $\gamma_{dR}(G)$. The double roman bondage number of $G$, denoted by $b_{dR}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality among all edge subsets $B \subseteq E(G)$ such that $\gamma_{dR}(G-B) > \gamma_{dR}(G)$. In this paper we study the double roman bondage number in graphs. We determine the double roman bondage number in several families of graphs, and present several bounds for the double roman bondage number. 16. Liposomal Doxorubicin Kinetic Study in an in vitro 2D and 3D Tumor Model for Osteosarcoma in a Perfusion Bioreactor

Abstract

Background: In vivo drug screening in animal models is contrary to ethical values, costly and time-consuming. Traditional static in vitro models do not reflect the basic characteristics of bone tumor microenvironments; therefore, perfusion bioreactors, in particular, would be an applicable choice due to their advantages to regenerate versatile bone tumor models for studying in vitro novel drug delivery systems. Methods: In this study, an optimal drug formulation of liposomal doxorubicin was prepared, and the release kinetics of the drug and its toxicity effect on MG-63 bone cancer cell line were investigated in two-dimensional, static three-dimensional media on a PLGA/β-TCP scaffold and also in a dynamic media in a perfusion bioreactor. In this assay, the efficacy of the IC50 of this formulation which had been obtained in two-dimensional cell culture (=0.1 μg/ml), was studied in static and dynamic three-dimensional media after 3 and 7 days. Liposomes with good morphology and encapsulation efficiency of 95% had release kinetics of the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. Results: The results of cell growth before treatment and cell viability after treatment in all three environments were compared. Cell growth in 2D was rapid, while it was slow in static 3D conditions. In the dynamic 3D environment, it was significant compared to the static tumor models. Cell viability after 3 and 7 days from treatment was 54.73% and 13.39% in 2D conditions, 72.27% and 26.78% in the static 3D model, while 100% and 78.92% in the dynamic culture indicating the effect of drug toxicity over time, but drug resistance of 3D models compared to 2D culture. In the bioreactor, the formulation used in the mentioned concentration showed very small cytotoxicity demonstrating the dominance of mechanical stimuli on cell growth over drug toxicity. Conclusion: Increasing drug resistance in 3D models compared to 2D models indicates the superiority of liposomal Dox over free form to reduce IC50 concentration.

Abstract

Background and Aims Endoscopic management of acute cholecystitis has expanded in patients who are considered nonoperative candidates. Traditionally managed with percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC), improvement in techniques and devices has led to increased use of endoscopic methods for gallbladder drainage. This document reviews technical aspects of endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder drainage (ET-GBD) and EUS-guided GBD (EUS-GBD) as well as their respective technical/clinical success and adverse event rates. Available comparative data are also reviewed among nonsurgical gallbladder drainage techniques (PC, ET-GBD, and EUS-GBD). Methods The MEDLINE database was searched through March 2021 for relevant articles by using keywords including “acute cholecystitis,” “interventional EUS,” “percutaneous cholecystostomy,” “transpapillary gallbladder drainage,” “EUS-guided gallbladder drainage,” “lumen-apposing metal stent,” “gallbladder stenting,” and “endoscopic gallbladder drainage.” The manuscript was drafted by 2 authors and reviewed by members of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Technology Committee and subsequently by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Governing Board. Results Multiple studies have demonstrated acceptable outcomes comparing PC and both endoscopic gallbladder drainage techniques, ET-GBD and EUS-GBD. Published data suggest that endoscopic gallbladder drainage techniques may be associated with lower rates of adverse events and improved quality of life. However, there are important clinical considerations for choosing among these treatment options, requiring a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to therapeutic decision-making in these patients. Conclusions The implementation of EUS-GBD and ET-GBD in high-risk surgical patients with acute cholecystitis may result in favorable outcomes when compared with PC. Further improvements in techniques and training should lead to more widespread acceptance and dissemination of these treatment options.

Abstract

Background and Aims Esophageal function testing is an integral component of the evaluation of refractory GERD and esophageal motility disorders. This review summarizes the current technologies available for esophageal function testing, including the functional luminal imaging probe (FLIP), high-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM), and multichannel intraluminal impedance (MII) and pH monitoring. Methods We performed a MEDLINE, PubMed, and MAUDE database literature search to identify pertinent clinical studies through March 2021 using the following key words: esophageal manometry, HRM, esophageal impedance, FLIP, MII, and esophageal pH testing. Technical data were gathered from traditional and web-based publications, proprietary publications, and informal communications with pertinent vendors. The report was drafted, reviewed, and edited by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Technology Committee and approved by the Governing Board of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Results FLIP is a high-resolution impedance planimetry system used for pressure and dimension measurement in the esophagus, pylorus, and anal sphincter. FLIP provides complementary information to HRM for esophageal motility disorders, especially achalasia. The Chicago classification, based on HRM data, is a widely adopted algorithmic scheme used to diagnose esophageal motility disorders. MII detects intraluminal bolus movement and, combined with pH measurement or manometry, provides information on acid and non-acid gastroesophageal reflux and bolus transit in patients with refractory GERD and for preoperative evaluation for anti-reflux procedures. Conclusions Esophageal function testing techniques (FLIP, HRM, and MII-pH) have diagnostic and prognostic value in the evaluation of esophageal motility disorders and refractory GERD. Abstract

Background and Aims Lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMSs) are a novel class of devices that have expanded the spectrum of endoscopic GI interventions. LAMSs with their dumbbell configuration, short saddle length, and large inner luminal diameter provide favorable stent characteristics to facilitate anastomosis formation between the gut lumen and adjacent structures. Methods The MEDLINE database was searched through April 2021 for articles related to LAMSs by using additional relevant keywords such as “walled-off pancreatic necrosis,” “pseudocysts,” “pancreatic fluid collection,” “cholecystitis,” “gastroenterostomy,” in addition to “endoscopic treatment” and “endoscopic management,” among others. Results This technology review describes the full spectrum of LAMS designs and delivery systems, techniques for deployment, procedural outcomes, safety, training issues, and financial considerations. Conclusions Although LAMSs were initially introduced for drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts and walled-off necrosis, the versatility of these devices has led to a variety of off-label uses including gallbladder drainage, enteric bypass with the creation of gastroenterostomies, and treatment of luminal GI strictures.

Abstract

Background and Aims Zenker’s diverticulum (ZD) has traditionally been treated with open surgery or rigid endoscopy. With the advances in endoscopy, alternative flexible endoscopic treatments have been developed. Methods This document reviews current endoscopic techniques and devices used to treat ZD. Results The endoscopic techniques may be categorized as the traditional flexible endoscopic septal division and the more recent submucosal tunneling endoscopic septum division, also known as peroral endoscopic myotomy for ZD. This document also addresses clinical outcomes, safety, and financial considerations. Conclusions Flexible endoscopic approaches treat symptomatic ZD with results that are favorable compared with traditional open surgical or rigid endoscopic alternatives.

Abstract

Background and Aims Multidrug-resistant infectious outbreaks associated with duodenoscopes have been documented internationally. Single-use duodenoscopes, disposable distal ends, or distal end cap sealants could eliminate or reduce exogenous patient-to-patient infection associated with ERCP. Methods This document reviews technologies that have been developed to help reduce or eliminate exogenous infections because of duodenoscopes. Results Four duodenoscopes with disposable end caps, 1 end sheath, and 2 disposable duodenoscopes are reviewed in this document. The evidence regarding their efficacy in procedural success rates, reduction of duodenoscope bacterial contamination, clinical outcomes associated with these devices, safety, and the financial considerations are discussed. Conclusions Several technologies discussed in this document are anticipated to eliminate or reduce exogenous infections during endoscopy requiring a duodenoscope. Although disposable duodenoscopes can eliminate exogenous ERCP-related risk of infection, data regarding effectiveness are needed outside of expert centers. Additionally, with more widespread adoption of these new technologies, more data regarding functionality, medical economics, and environmental impact will accrue. Disposable distal end caps facilitate duodenoscope reprocessing; postmarketing surveillance culture studies and real-life patient infection analyses are important areas of future research.

Abstract

Purpose In patients with obesity, micronutrient deficiencies have been reported both before and after bariatric surgery (BS). Obesity is a chronic pro-inflammatory status, and inflammation increases the risk of micronutrient malnutrition. Our objective was to assess in pre-BS patients the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and their correlation with blood values of C-reactive protein (CRP). Methods Anthropometric data, instrumental examinations, and blood variables were centrally measured in the first 200 patients undergoing a pre-BS evaluation at the “Città della Salute e della Scienza” Hospital of Torino, starting from January 2018. Results At least one micronutrient deficiency was present in 85.5% of pre-BS patients. Vitamin D deficiency was the most prevalent (74.5%), followed by folate (33.5%), iron (32%), calcium (13%), vitamin B12 (10%), and albumin (5.5%) deficiency. CRP values were high (> 5 mg/L) in 65% of the patients. These individuals showed increased rate of iron, folate, vitamin B12 deficiency, and a higher number of micronutrient deficiencies. In a multiple logistic regression model, increased CRP levels were significantly associated with deficiencies of vitamin B12 (OR = 5.84; 95% CI 1.25–27.2; p = 0.024), folate (OR = 4.02; 1.87–8.66; p p = 0.01). Conclusions Micronutrient deficiencies are common in patients with severe obesity undergoing BS, especially when inflammation is present. In the presence of increased CRP values before surgery, it might be advisable to search for possible multiple micronutrient deficiencies.

For a graph G = (V,E), a double Roman dominating function has the property that for every vertex with f(v) = 0, either there exists a vertex , with f(u) = 3, or at least two neighbors having f(x) = f(y) = 2, and every vertex with value 1 under f has at least a neighbor with value 2 or 3. The weight of a DRDF is the sum . A DRDF f is called independent if the set of vertices with positive weight under f, is an independent set. 31. Electric field induced pure spin-photo current in zigzag stanene and germanene nanoribbons

Abstract

The spin-photo current in single layer stanene and germanene under a linearly polarized light is theoretically investigated based on the tight-binding Hamiltonian combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function at room temperature. The results show that by considering the simultaneous effect of the linear illumination and a vertical external electric field without any magnetic exchange element, pure spin-photo current without charge current is generated in two-dimensional lattices with a large intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. The necessity of enhanced spin life-time for detection of spin polarization can be explained by spin-valley locking concept. Spin-valley locking arises in buckled two-dimensional materials as a result of the large spin-orbit coupling and electric-field reversible valley spin polarization. Equal absorption of the linearly illumination at both valleys with different spin polarization, leads to pure spin-photo current injection. In addition, an acceptable photoresponsivity has been reported in a broad range of photon energy. The numerical results indicate high quantum efficiency with a maximum of nearly 83% and 50% for stanene and germanene, respectively. This work may pave theoretical reference toward design of new spin-optoelectronic devices based on satanene and germanene junctions with high performance.

Abstract

Background Past research in population health trends has shown that injuries form a substantial burden of population health loss. Regular updates to injury burden assessments are critical. We report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Study estimates on morbidity and mortality for all injuries. methods We reviewed results for injuries from the GBD 2017 study. GBD 2017 measured injury-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) using the Cause of Death Ensemble model. To measure non-fatal injuries, GBD 2017 modelled injury-specific incidence and converted this to prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs). YLLs and YLDs were summed to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Findings In 1990, there were 4 260 493 (4 085 700 to 4 396 138) injury deaths, which increased to 4 484 722 (4 332 010 to 4 585 554) deaths in 2017, while age-standardised mortality decreased from 1079 (1073 to 1086) to 738 (730 to 745) per 100 000. In 1990, there were 354 064 302 (95% uncertainty interval: 338 174 876 to 371 610 802) new cases of injury globally, which increased to 520 710 288 (493 430 247 to 547 988 635) new cases in 2017. During this time, age-standardised incidence decreased non-significantly from 6824 (6534 to 7147) to 6763 (6412 to 7118) per 100 000. Between 1990 and 2017, age-standardised DALYs decreased from 4947 (4655 to 5233) per 100 000 to 3267 (3058 to 3505). Interpretation Injuries are an important cause of health loss globally, though mortality has declined between 1990 and 2017. Future research in injury burden should focus on prevention in high-burden populations, improving data collection and ensuring access to medical care. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2020. Abstract

Purpose Bariatric surgery (BS) has been recognized as an effective treatment for most patients with morbid obesity, but a variable range of patients failed to achieve a successful weight-loss. Controversial data are available about predictors of unsuccess. We aimed to retrospectively assess whether clinical baseline characteristics of patients submitted to sleeve gastrectomy (SL) or gastric bypass (GBP) were associated with unsuccessful weight-loss after 12 and 24-month follow-up. Methods Three hundred patients who underwent BS from the 1st January 2016, with at least 24-months follow-up, were enrolled. Patients were divided according to their percentage of excess weight-loss (%EWL) either Results None of the patients was lost at follow-up; 56 (18.7%) patients showed a %EWL p = 0.001; OR = 1.066; 1.027–1.107; p p p p = 0.032) with %EWL Conclusion Older age, larger neck circumference, and %EWL at 6-months were significantly associated with BS unsuccess, showing almost 90% of those patients an unsuccessful weight-loss early after surgery. Further larger studies with longer follow-up are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract

Background: While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria. Methods: In this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation. In summary, these methods included estimating cause-specific mortality for every cause of injury, and then estimating incidence for every cause of injury. Non-fatal disability for each cause is then calculated based on the probabilities of suffering from different types of bodily injury experienced. Results: GBD 2017 produced morbidity and mortality estimates for 38 causes of injury. Estimates were produced in terms of incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability, cause-specific mortality, years of life lost and disability-adjusted life-years for a 28-year period for 22 age groups, 195 countries and both sexes. Conclusions: GBD 2017 demonstrated a complex and sophisticated series of analytical steps using the largest known database of morbidity and mortality data on injuries. GBD 2017 results should be used to help inform injury prevention policy making and resource allocation. Abstract

A theoretical analysis of controllable metal–insulator transition is performed by carrying out a quantum chaos analysis for a single-walled carbon nanotube which is affected by topological Stone–Wales defect. Nanotubes have recently attracted attention as promising materials for flexible nanoelectronic devices. Individual topological Stone–Wales defects have been identified experimentally in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene. The findings reveal that defected CNT displays a gradual crossover from metal to insulator phase in a longitudinal electric field. By determining the threshold value of the electric field for metal–insulator transition, CNT may be used as a switch in electronic devices. Our results are obtained by calculating the singularity spectrum of a nearest-neighbor tight-binding model. Also, quantum chaos theory is used for obtaining a detailed understanding of a dynamic phase transition from delocalized states (chaotic) to localized states (Poisson). More interestingly, the appearance of negative differential resistance for pure CNT suggests potential applications in nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract

Hyperthermia is a promising alternative modality for the conventional cancer treatments. Nanoparticle-mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) has been widely applied for hyperthermia cancer therapy by a near-infrared light irradiation. Some special nanoparticles can convert light energy into heat and destroy the tumor cells. Inspired from the photothermal efficacy of the gold nanoparticles, here we synthesized, characterized, and applied novel photothermal polyethylene glycol-curcumin-gold nanoparticles (PEG-Cur-Au NPs) in cancer PTT. The effect of PEG-Cur-Au NPs upon irradiation by an 808-nm laser on C540 (B16/F10) cell line as well as implanted (bearing) melanoma tumor in inbred C57 mice was investigated. In vitro temperature increment, cell viability evaluation, and histological analyses were performed. The results showed a dose-dependent cytotoxicity of PEG-Cur-Au NPs toward C540 (B16/F10) cell line at concentrations ≥ 25 μg mL-1 with an IC50 value of 42.7 μg mL-1 in dark (and with no toxicity for 10 μg mL-1). On the other hand, 808-nm laser irradiation alone (without using PEG-Cur-Au NPs) for 10 min induced killing effect on the C540 (B16/F10) cell line in a laser power-dependent manner at power density > 0.5 W cm-2 (no toxicity for 0.5 W cm-2). Abstract

Tailoring the propagation of light in an arbitrarily manner has motivated a great of interest on nanophotonics. As a new mechanism for this purpose, the generation of an effective magnetic field leading to a Lorentz force for photons is recently proposed in a photonic resonator lattice. Here, we consider a photonic resonator lattice with a harmonically modulated phase and with an interface splitting the lattice into two magnetically different regions. Considering this lattice, we try to explore the impact of phase and the location of interface on the localization of Hamiltonian eigenstates by applying level spacing distribution as a cornerstone of random matrix theory. The obtained results show that while the location of interface has no effect on the appearance of localized states in weak phases, in strong phases it is found a threshold value for location of interface above which all eigenstates are delocalized. As a result, level spacing distribution and so random matrix theory is capable of characterizing the behavior of a photon in regions with different magnetic properties.

Abstract

The consolidation process and density distribution of Mg-SiC nanocomposite powder were studied using computational finite element modeling (FEM) and experimental approaches. Cold isostatic pressing (CIP) was employed for producing fully dense Mg-SiC nanocomposites with a homogeneous distribution of SiC nanoparticles. The elastoplastic modified Drucker-Prager Cap (DPC) model was applied to predict SiC nanoparticle density distribution effects on the milled powder compressibility after the CIP. The FEM results revealed that increasing SiC nanoparticles from 1% (M1Sn) to 10% (M10Sn) volume leads to harder compressibility, increasing the maximum equivalent pressure stress value 717.2 to 737.1 MPa, and decreasing the relative density value 94.63% to 88.67%. The maximum element volume (EVOL) for pure Mg (MM), M1Sn, and M10Sn powders was estimated as 21.69, 20.13, and 15, respectively. The model is validated by comparing finite element simulations with experimental results of relatve density and reduction of volume under 700 MPa cold isostatic pressure for MM, M1Sn, and M10Sn powders. The finite element modeling results of samples after the CIP process were consistent with the experimental results. These results indicate the effectiveness of the modified DPC model and confirmed compaction behavior and relative density of Mg-SiC nanocomposite powders.

Abstract

This paper explores cast Mg-5Zn alloy, containing small amounts of yttrium (Y: 0.1-1.5 wt.%), through microstructure evaluation and tensile and hardness tests. The results reveal that addition of Y to the alloy refines microstructure, especially when secondary phases, Mg3Zn6Y (I) and Mg3Zn3Y2 (W), form. I-phase is detected when 0.3 wt.% Y is added to the alloy, while W-phase is only observed in Mg-5Zn-1.5Y alloy. The results also show that the addition of Y improves yield and tensile strength as well as the hardness value of the Mg-5Zn alloy at the expense of its formability. The three effects of the solid solution of Y in α-Mg, grain refinement, and the formation of I- and W-phases are the reasons for such behavior. The improvement is more pronounced when W-phase appears in the microstructure. In other words, Mg-5Zn-1.5Y alloy behaves stronger and harder than other alloys and may be considered as a potential candidate for bioimplant applications if its degradation behavior meets the requirements.

Abstract

Importance: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemiology. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is uniquely poised to provide these crucial data. Objective: To describe cancer burden for 29 cancer groups in 195 countries from 1990 through 2017 to provide data needed for cancer control planning. Evidence Review: We used the GBD study estimation methods to describe cancer incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-Adjusted life-years (DALYs). Results are presented at the national level as well as by Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income, educational attainment, and total fertility rate. We also analyzed the influence of the epidemiological vs the demographic transition on cancer incidence. Findings: In 2017, there were 24.5 million incident cancer cases worldwide (16.8 million without nonmelanoma skin cancer [NMSC]) and 9.6 million cancer deaths. The majority of cancer DALYs came from years of life lost (97%), and only 3% came from years lived with disability. The odds of developing cancer were the lowest in the low SDI quintile (1 in 7) and the highest in the high SDI quintile (1 in 2) for both sexes. In 2017, the most common incident cancers in men were NMSC (4.3 million incident cases); tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer (1.5 million incident cases); and prostate cancer (1.3 million incident cases). The most common causes of cancer deaths and DALYs for men were TBL cancer (1.3 million deaths and 28.4 million DALYs), liver cancer (572000 deaths and 15.2 million DALYs), and stomach cancer (542000 deaths and 12.2 million DALYs). For women in 2017, the most common incident cancers were NMSC (3.3 million incident cases), breast cancer (1.9 million incident cases), and colorectal cancer (819000 incident cases). The leading causes of cancer deaths and DALYs for women were breast cancer (601000 deaths and 17.4 million DALYs), TBL cancer (596000 deaths and 12.6 million DALYs), and colorectal cancer (414000 deaths and 8.3 million DALYs). Conclusions and Relevance: The national epidemiological profiles of cancer burden in the GBD study show large heterogeneities, which are a reflection of different exposures to risk factors, economic settings, lifestyles, and access to care and screening. The GBD study can be used by policy makers and other stakeholders to develop and improve national and local cancer control in order to achieve the global targets and improve equity in cancer care. © 2019 American Medical Association. Abstract

Background The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk–outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk–outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk–outcome associations. Methods We used the CRA framework developed for previous iterations of GBD to estimate levels and trends in exposure, attributable deaths, and attributable disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), by age group, sex, year, and location for 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or groups of risks from 1990 to 2017. This study included 476 risk–outcome pairs that met the GBD study criteria for convincing or probable evidence of causation. We extracted relative risk and exposure estimates from 46 749 randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, household surveys, census data, satellite data, and other sources. We used statistical models to pool data, adjust for bias, and incorporate covariates. Using the counterfactual scenario of theoretical minimum risk exposure level (TMREL), we estimated the portion of deaths and DALYs that could be attributed to a given risk. We explored the relationship between development and risk exposure by modelling the relationship between the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) and risk-weighted exposure prevalence and estimated expected levels of exposure and risk-attributable burden by SDI. Finally, we explored temporal changes in risk-attributable DALYs by decomposing those changes into six main component drivers of change as follows: (1) population growth; (2) changes in population age structures; (3) changes in exposure to environmental and occupational risks; (4) changes in exposure to behavioural risks; (5) changes in exposure to metabolic risks; and (6) changes due to all other factors, approximated as the risk-deleted death and DALY rates, where the risk-deleted rate is the rate that would be observed had we reduced the exposure levels to the TMREL for all risk factors included in GBD 2017. Findings In 2017, 34·1 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 33·3–35·0) deaths and 1·21 billion (1·14–1·28) DALYs were attributable to GBD risk factors. Globally, 61·0% (59·6–62·4) of deaths and 48·3% (46·3–50·2) of DALYs were attributed to the GBD 2017 risk factors. When ranked by risk-attributable DALYs, high systolic blood pressure (SBP) was the leading risk factor, accounting for 10·4 million (9·39–11·5) deaths and 218 million (198–237) DALYs, followed by smoking (7·10 million [6·83–7·37] deaths and 182 million [173–193] DALYs), high fasting plasma glucose (6·53 million [5·23–8·23] deaths and 171 million [144–201] DALYs), high body-mass index (BMI; 4·72 million [2·99–6·70] deaths and 148 million [98·6–202] DALYs), and short gestation for birthweight (1·43 million [1·36–1·51] deaths and 139 million [131–147] DALYs). In total, risk-attributable DALYs declined by 4·9% (3·3–6·5) between 2007 and 2017. In the absence of demographic changes (ie, population growth and ageing), changes in risk exposure and risk-deleted DALYs would have led to a 23·5% decline in DALYs during that period. Conversely, in the absence of changes in risk exposure and risk-deleted DALYs, demographic changes would have led to an 18·6% increase in DALYs during that period. The ratios of observed risk exposure levels to exposure levels expected based on SDI (O/E ratios) increased globally for unsafe drinking water and household air pollution between 1990 and 2017. This result suggests that development is occurring more rapidly than are changes in the underlying risk structure in a population. Conversely, nearly universal declines in O/E ratios for smoking and alcohol use indicate that, for a given SDI, exposure to these risks is declining. In 2017, the leading Level 4 risk factor for age-standardised DALY rates was high SBP in four super-regions: central Europe, eastern Europe, and central Asia; north Africa and Middle East; south Asia; and southeast Asia, east Asia, and Oceania. The leading risk factor in the high-income super-region was smoking, in Latin America and Caribbean was high BMI, and in sub-Saharan Africa was unsafe sex. O/E ratios for unsafe sex in sub-Saharan Africa were notably high, and those for alcohol use in north Africa and the Middle East were notably low. Interpretation By quantifying levels and trends in exposures to risk factors and the resulting disease burden, this assessment offers insight into where past policy and programme efforts might have been successful and highlights current priorities for public health action. Decreases in behavioural, environmental, and occupational risks have largely offset the effects of population growth and ageing, in relation to trends in absolute burden. Conversely, the combination of increasing metabolic risks and population ageing will probably continue to drive the increasing trends in non-communicable diseases at the global level, which presents both a public health challenge and opportunity. We see considerable spatiotemporal heterogeneity in levels of risk exposure and risk-attributable burden. Although levels of development underlie some of this heterogeneity, O/E ratios show risks for which countries are overperforming or underperforming relative to their level of development. As such, these ratios provide a benchmarking tool to help to focus local decision making. Our findings reinforce the importance of both risk exposure monitoring and epidemiological research to assess causal connections between risks and health outcomes, and they highlight the usefulness of the GBD study in synthesising data to draw comprehensive and robust conclusions that help to inform good policy and strategic health planning. Abstract

Background Understanding the patterns of HIV/AIDS epidemics is crucial to tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts in countries. We provide a comprehensive assessment of the levels and trends of HIV/AIDS incidence, prevalence, mortality, and coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for 1980-2017 and forecast these estimates to 2030 for 195 countries and territories. Methods We determined a modelling strategy for each country on the basis of the availability and quality of data. For countries and territories with data from population-based seroprevalence surveys or antenatal care clinics, we estimated prevalence and incidence using an open-source version of the Estimation and Projection Package - a natural history model originally developed by the UNAIDS Reference Group on Estimates, Modelling, and Projections. For countries with cause-specific vital registration data, we corrected data for garbage coding (ie, deaths coded to an intermediate, immediate, or poorly defined cause) and HIV misclassification. We developed a process of cohort incidence bias adjustment to use information on survival and deaths recorded in vital registration to back-calculate HIV incidence. For countries without any representative data on HIV, we produced incidence estimates by pulling information from observed bias in the geographical region. We used a re-coded version of the Spectrum model (a cohort component model that uses rates of disease progression and HIV mortality on and off ART) to produce agesex- specific incidence, prevalence, and mortality, and treatment coverage results for all countries, and forecast these measures to 2030 using Spectrum with inputs that were extended on the basis of past trends in treatment scale-up and new infections. Findings Global HIV mortality peaked in 2006 with 1·95 million deaths (95% uncertainty interval 1·87-2·04) and has since decreased to 0·95 million deaths (0·91-1·01) in 2017. New cases of HIV globally peaked in 1999 (3·16 million, 2·79-3·67) and since then have gradually decreased to 1·94 million (1·63-2·29) in 2017. These trends, along with ART scale-up, have globally resulted in increased prevalence, with 36·8 million (34·8-39·2) people living with HIV in 2017. Prevalence of HIV was highest in southern sub-Saharan Africa in 2017, and countries in the region had ART coverage ranging from 65·7% in Lesotho to 85·7% in eSwatini. Our forecasts showed that 54 countries will meet the UNAIDS target of 81% ART coverage by 2020 and 12 countries are on track to meet 90% ART coverage by 2030. Forecasted results estimate that few countries will meet the UNAIDS 2020 and 2030 mortality and incidence targets. Interpretation Despite progress in reducing HIV-related mortality over the past decade, slow decreases in incidence, combined with the current context of stagnated funding for related interventions, mean that many countries are not on track to reach the 2020 and 2030 global targets for reduction in incidence and mortality. With a growing population of people living with HIV, it will continue to be a major threat to public health for years to come. The pace of progress needs to be hastened by continuing to expand access to ART and increasing investments in proven HIV prevention initiatives that can be scaled up to have population-level impact. © 2019 The Author(s).

Abstract

Background: Neurological disorders are increasingly recognised as major causes of death and disability worldwide. The aim of this analysis from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 is to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date estimates of the global, regional, and national burden from neurological disorders. Methods: We estimated prevalence, incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs; the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]) by age and sex for 15 neurological disorder categories (tetanus, meningitis, encephalitis, stroke, brain and other CNS cancers, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron diseases, idiopathic epilepsy, migraine, tension-type headache, and a residual category for other less common neurological disorders) in 195 countries from 1990 to 2016. DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression tool, was the main method of estimation of prevalence and incidence, and the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) was used for mortality estimation. We quantified the contribution of 84 risks and combinations of risk to the disease estimates for the 15 neurological disorder categories using the GBD comparative risk assessment approach. Findings: Globally, in 2016, neurological disorders were the leading cause of DALYs (276 million [95% UI 247–308]) and second leading cause of deaths (9·0 million [8·8–9·4]). The absolute number of deaths and DALYs from all neurological disorders combined increased (deaths by 39% [34–44] and DALYs by 15% [9–21]) whereas their age-standardised rates decreased (deaths by 28% [26–30] and DALYs by 27% [24–31]) between 1990 and 2016. The only neurological disorders that had a decrease in rates and absolute numbers of deaths and DALYs were tetanus, meningitis, and encephalitis. The four largest contributors of neurological DALYs were stroke (42·2% [38·6–46·1]), migraine (16·3% [11·7–20·8]), Alzheimer's and other dementias (10·4% [9·0–12·1]), and meningitis (7·9% [6·6–10·4]). For the combined neurological disorders, age-standardised DALY rates were significantly higher in males than in females (male-to-female ratio 1·12 [1·05–1·20]), but migraine, multiple sclerosis, and tension-type headache were more common and caused more burden in females, with male-to-female ratios of less than 0·7. The 84 risks quantified in GBD explain less than 10% of neurological disorder DALY burdens, except stroke, for which 88·8% (86·5–90·9) of DALYs are attributable to risk factors, and to a lesser extent Alzheimer's disease and other dementias (22·3% [11·8–35·1] of DALYs are risk attributable) and idiopathic epilepsy (14·1% [10·8–17·5] of DALYs are risk attributable). Interpretation: Globally, the burden of neurological disorders, as measured by the absolute number of DALYs, continues to increase. As populations are growing and ageing, and the prevalence of major disabling neurological disorders steeply increases with age, governments will face increasing demand for treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for neurological disorders. The scarcity of established modifiable risks for most of the neurological burden demonstrates that new knowledge is required to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies. Abstract

Objectives To use the estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016 to describe patterns of suicide mortality globally, regionally, and for 195 countries and territories by age, sex, and Socio-demographic index, and to describe temporal trends between 1990 and 2016. Design Systematic analysis. Main outcome measures Crude and age standardised rates from suicide mortality and years of life lost were compared across regions and countries, and by age, sex, and Socio-demographic index (a composite measure of fertility, income, and education). Results The total number of deaths from suicide increased by 6.7% (95% uncertainty interval 0.4% to 15.6%) globally over the 27 year study period to 817 000 (762 000 to 884 000) deaths in 2016. However, the age standardised mortality rate for suicide decreased by 32.7% (27.2% to 36.6%) worldwide between 1990 and 2016, similar to the decline in the global age standardised mortality rate of 30.6%. Suicide was the leading cause of age standardised years of life lost in the Global Burden of Disease region of high income Asia Pacific and was among the top 10 leading causes in eastern Europe, central Europe, western Europe, central Asia, Australasia, southern Latin America, and high income North America. Rates for men were higher than for women across regions, countries, and age groups, except for the 15 to 19 age group. There was variation in the female to male ratio, with higher ratios at lower levels of Socio-demographic index. Women experienced greater decreases in mortality rates (49.0%, 95% uncertainty interval 42.6% to 54.6%) than men (23.8%, 15.6% to 32.7%). Conclusions Age standardised mortality rates for suicide have greatly reduced since 1990, but suicide remains an important contributor to mortality worldwide. Suicide mortality was variable across locations, between sexes, and between age groups. Suicide prevention strategies can be targeted towards vulnerable populations if they are informed by variations in mortality rates. © Published by the BMJ Publishing Group Limited.

Abstract

This review presents a brief outline of our current knowledge of the structure and chemical composition of the outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), originating from the surface of Gram negative bacteria including their outer membrane proteins and lipopolysaccharides. Moreover, the functional roles and applications of OMVs in medical research such as OMV-based vaccines, OMV adjuvants properties, OMV carriers in conjugated vaccines as well as in drug vehicles and delivery systems are discussed. Finally, new applications of these macromolecules as biotechnological tools are briefly presented.

Abstract

Bilayer graphene (BLG), as a two-dimensional crystalline form of carbon, with a controllable band gap, has been proposed as an alternative to graphene for nanoscale electronics. Through modeling single-electron transport in BLG, using Abelian group schemes Z m × Z m as a novel approach, the present paper has numerically studied metal-insulator transition using random matrix theory in doped AA-stacking BLG. In this mathematical technique, initially, Abelian group schemes and the underlying graph of honeycomb periodic lattice of the single-layer graphene were constructed. Then, the tight-binding Hamiltonian matrix of this layer was represented by the adjacency matrices of the graph. Through using these matrices, it is possible to generate m-dimensional Bose-Mesner algebra. Finally, by applying the wreath product of these matrices, the Hamiltonian was calculated. In fact, instead of the hopping integral between individual layers, the mathematical combination of their underlying graphs was considered. This would be generalized to more than two layers. Numerical results indicated that insulator to metal transition occurred at the threshold doping value C = 0.5 % , which has already been achieved. After this threshold value, by increasing doping, a fast quantum chaotic transition from Poisson to Wigner energy-level statistic distribution was observed. The paper has suggested that a sufficient difference in the concentration of dopant atoms at individual layers would be an efficient way of controlling metal-insulator transitions.

Abstract

Proton conductivity of Na3 (2, 4, 6-trihydroxy-1, 3, 5-benzenetrisulfonate) framework (β-PCMOF2) is studied in anhydrous and humid conditions using molecular dynamics simulation in the temperature range of 303-423 K. To obtain results compatible with experiments force field parameters for proton is adjusted. The Grotthuss mechanism for proton conduction of β-PCMOF2 is proved by obtaining an activation energy in the range of ( − 0.261, − 0.101 eV). The effect of the electric field on proton conductivity is also investigated. Proton conduction is reduced with temperature which is in agreement with the experiments. The RDF plots obtained in the absence of electric field and the effect of electric field on the proton MSD show that the protons transport through the oxygen atoms of sulfonate groups of the framework and their movements in the x and y directions are more than that in the z-direction. Simulations are carried out in the presence of protonated water and 1, 2, 4-triazole molecules rejected possibility of the vehicle.

Abstract

Background: Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) exhibit very unique physiochemical and optical properties, which now are extensively studied in a range of medical diagnostic and therapeutic applications. AuNPs can be used for cancer clinical treatment with minimal invasion. On the other hand, curcumin is a polyphenol derived from turmeric which is used for medical purposes due to its anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite these potential properties of curcumin, its usage is limited in medicine due to low solubility in water. Conjugation of curcumin to AuNPs (Au-Cur nanostructure) can be increasing its solubility. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a novel kind of cancer treatment which involves two major components: laser and photo-thermoconversion agents. Materials and Methods: Here, diode lasers emitting 808 nm and 650 nm were utilized as light sources, and synthesized Au-Cur nanostructure was applied as a photo-thermo conversion agent. UV-vis absorbance spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were applied to study the maximum absorption of particles, size stability of the samples and their zeta potential. The synthesized Au-Cur nanostructure under irradiation of laser is used for PPT on 4T1 cells. The cytotoxicity activity of Au-Cur nanostructure and laser irradiation on 4T1 cells was evaluated by MTT assay. Results: Synthesized Au-Cur nanostructure showed λmax at 540 nm and a mean hydrodynamic diameter of 25.8 nm. 4T1 cells were exposed to an 808 nm diode laser (1.5 W cm2 , 10 min) in the presence of different concentrations of Au-Cur nanostructure. Next, 4T1 cells with Au-Vur nanostructure were exposed to diode laser beam (650 nm, 1.5 W cm2 ) for 10 min. The results revealed that Au-Cur nanostructure under laser irradiation of 808 nm more decreased cell viability of 4T1 cells compared to laser irradiation of 650 nm. Conclusion: It was concluded that combining an 808-nm laser at a power density of 1.5W/cm2 with Au-Cur nanostructure has a destruction effect on 4T1 breast cancer cells in vitro experiments compared to laser irradiation of 650 nm.
