Abstract: A new type of spallation experiments has been carried out at GSI, Darmstadt (Germany) in order to understand the spallation mechanism in greater details. These experiments use the inverse-kinematics technique where the ion beam is directed onto a liquid Hydrogen target, allowing the detection of heavy spallation residues in coincidence with low center-of-mass energy light particles. The setup is based on A Large Acceptance DIpole magNet (ALADIN) coupled with a multitrack Time Projection Chamber (TPC), a hodoscope and a neutron detector. First, data on 56 Fe + p at 1 A GeV were taken in February 2004. In the on-going analysis, isotopic cross-sections have been determined and compared to data taken at the FRagment Separator in GSI. Mean values and width of residue velocity distributions have also been obtained as well as Helium production cross-section. First, coincidence data are being analyzed.

Abstract: The production cross sections of fragmentation-evaporation residues in the reaction Pb+p at 500 A MeV have been measured using the inverse-kinematics method and the FRS spectrometer (GSI). Fragments were identified in nuclear charge using ionisation chambers. The mass identification was performed event-by-event using the Bρ-TOF-ΔE technique. Although partially-unresolved ionic charge states induced an ambiguity on the mass of some heavy fragments, production rates could be obtained with a high accuracy by systematically accounting for the polluting ionic charge states. The contribution of multiple reactions in the target was subtracted using a new, partly self-consistent code. The isobaric distributions are found to have a shape very close to the one observed in experiments at higher energy. Kinematic properties of the fragments were also measured. The total and the isotopic cross sections, including charge-pickup cross sections, are in good agreement with previous measurements and models. The data are discussed in the light of previous spallation measurements, especially on lead at 1 GeV. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Fission fragments from 1 A GeV 238U ions impinging a hydrogen target are investigated by using the fragment separator FRS for magnetic selection of reaction products including ray-tracing, and ΔE-ToF techniques. On the basis of the kinematics of the fragments, binary fission can be assigned as production process up to very heavy fragments. Fission fragments are separated and identified as far as 184Re for the first time. Cross sections are measured and found in the range of 500 μb to 5 μb. Isobaric cross sections decrease smoothly with increasing masses. Beyond tungsten, fission fragments are hidden in the more abundant spallation evaporation residues. 283 isotopes of elements gadolinium to rhenium in the mass range 147 to 184 are observed and cross sections measured. All the fragments are formed by fission of excited parent nuclei following emission of a cascade of secondary neutrons.

Abstract: Complex structural effects in the nuclide production from the projectile fragmentation of 1 A GeV 238 U nuclei in a titanium target, manifested as an even-odd effect, are reported. The structure seems to be insensitive to the excitation energy induced in the reaction. This is in contrast to the prominent structural features found in nuclear fission and in transfer reactions, which gradually disappear with increasing excitation energy. Most of the features of the results are reproduced using the statistical model of nuclear reactions, treating the pairing correlations in a consistent way both in the masses and in the level densities. The structures appear as the result of the condensation process of heated nuclear matter while cooling down in the evaporation process. As such, it can be considered a manifestation of the passage from the normal liquid phase of the nucleus to its superfluid phase.

Abstract: PACS conv.GSI; The isotopic distributions and recoil velocities of the fission fragments produced in the spallation reaction 208Pb + p at 500 A MeV have been measured using the inverse-kinematics technique, a lead beam onto a liquid-hydrogen target, and the high-resolution spectrometer FRS at GSI. The shapes of the different distributions are found in good agreement with previously published data while the deduced total fission cross-section is higher than expected from existing systematics and some previous measurements. From the experimental data, the characteristics of the average fissioning system can be reconstructed in charge, mass and excitation energy, and the average number of post-fission neutrons can be inferred. The results are also compared to different models describing the spallation reaction. The intranuclear cascade code INCL4 followed by the de-excitation code ABLA is shown to describe reasonably well the evolution of the isotopic distribution shapes between 500 and 1000 A MeV.

Abstract: A systematic investigation of the isotopic cross sections of nuclear residues produced in the reactions238U (1 A GeV)+p,d has been performed with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer FRS at GSI. The large range of excitation energies induced in these reactions, together with the high fissility of uranium-like systems constitute an optimum scenario to study the dynamics of spallation reactions. In particular, some fundamental questions connected to the role of dissipation and the onset of a break-up stage at high temperatures can be addressed with these data.

Abstract: The accuracy of the pulse height weighting technique for the determination of neutron capture cross-sections is investigated. The technique is applied to measurements performed with C6D6 liquid scintillation detectors of two different types using capture samples of various dimensions. The data for well-known (n, gamma) resonances are analyzed using weighting functions obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the experimental set-up. Several causes of systematic deviation are identified and their effect is quantified. In all the cases measured the reaction yield agrees with the standard value within 2%. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The momentum spectra of 733 identified fragments were analysed to provide isotopic production cross sections, fission-fragment velocities and recoil momenta of the fissioning parent nuclei. Besides their general relevance, these quantities are also demanded for applications. Abstract: The production of heavy nuclides from the spallation-evaporation reaction of 238U induced by 1 GeV protons was studied in inverse kinematics. The evaporation residues from tungsten to uranium were identified in-flight in mass and atomic number. Their production cross-sections and their momentum distributions were determined. The data are compared with empirical systematics. A comparison with previous results from the spallation of 208Pb and 197Au reveals the strong influence of fission in the spallation of 238U.

Abstract: The production cross sections and the kinematical properties of primary residual nuclei have been studied in reactions 197Au + p, 208Pb + p, d, 238U + p, d, and 238U + 208Pb at energies around 1 A GeV. The measured kinematical properties of the residues were also used to disentangle the relevant reaction mechanisms, spallation-evaporation and spallation-fission. The fragment separator FRS at GSI, Darmstadt, was used to separate and identify the reaction products. The measured quantities are important for the design and planning of future radioactive-beam facilities and accelerator-driven systems.

Abstract: A large experimental program has been initiated at GSI to determine the production cross sections of heavy residues in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The complete isotopic distributions of spallation–evaporation residues of the reactions induced by 1 GeV protons and 2 GeV deuterons in 238U are presented. The primary reaction products were fully identified in mass and atomic number prior to beta decay by using the fragment separator FRS. These data provide basic information to estimate the intensities of radioactive nuclear beams to become available in future RNB facilities using isotope separation on-line (ISOL) or in-flight separation techniques.

Abstract: With the inverse kinematics method, the reaction mechanism which leads to the formation of light nuclides was investigated with a 1 A GeV 238 U beam impinging on a liquid H 2 target. Isotopes of all elements with Z ⩾6 were unambiguously identified, and the velocity of every produced nuclide was measured with great precision. Results show that very asymmetric fission of uranium nuclei produces neutron-rich isotopes of elements down to around charge 10. When uranium interacts with heavier nuclei the features of the reaction change drastically: while fission is the main mechanism for the production of light masses in 1 A GeV 238 U on H 2 , projectile fragmentation plays a dominant role in 1 A GeV 238 U on Ti leading to the formation of stable or neutron-deficient isotopes of all elements.

Abstract: [Abstract] At GSI, Darmstadt, an experimental program on fission with relativistic heavy-ion beams is in progress. A large range of excitation energies, combined with low angular momentum and small shape distortion is accessible. Full nuclide identification of the reaction residues is achieved by applying inverse kinematics. The nuclide production and the kinematics of fission fragments from a variety of primordial and radioactive projectiles reveal new insight into the influence of shell effects and dissipation on the fission process. The present contribution gives an overview on the experimental methods, the experimental results and the prospects for future progress.

Abstract: The influence of the neutron richness on binary decays is investigated in 78,82Kr+40Ca reactions at 5.5 MeV/A incident energy. Kinetic energy distributions and angular distributions of fragments with atomic number 6≤Z≤28 were measured using the 4π-INDRA array. Global features are compatible with an emission from a long-lived system. The yields around the symmetric splitting are about 30% smaller for the neutron rich system. The persistence of strong structural effects is evidenced from elemental cross-sections of the light fragments. The cross-sections for odd-Z fragments are higher for the neutron rich CN while cross-sections for even-Z fragments are higher for the neutron poor CN. Abstract: International audience; One of the first fusion–evaporation experiments using radioactive ion beams was performed at GANIL in order to study proton-rich nuclei of the light rare-earth region. The low production cross-section of the exotic species of interest, in combination with the low intensity of the beam and its induced background, demanded the use of a highly efficient experimental setup. This consisted of the EXOGAM γ-ray spectrometer coupled for the first time with both the DIAMANT charged-particle array and the VAMOS recoil spectrometer. In this report the experimental challenges of such studies will be discussed and the experimental achievements of the in-beam spectroscopy of proton drip-line nuclei using EXOGAM will be presented.

Abstract: The production of primary residual nuclei in the reaction 1 A GeV 208Pb on proton has been studied by measuring isotopic distributions for all elements from titanium (Z=22) to lead (Z=82). Kinematical properties of the residues were also determined and used to disentangle the relevant reaction mechanisms, spallation (projectile fragmentation) and fission. The fragment separator FRS at GSI, Darmstadt, was used to separate and identify the reaction products. The measured production cross sections are highly relevant for the design of accelerator-driven subcritical reactors and for the planning of future radioactive-beam facilities.

Abstract: Expérience GANIL; International audience; A fusion-evaporation experiment has been performed with a SPIRAL 76Kr radioactive beam in order to study the deformation of rare-earth nuclei near the proton drip-line. The experimental setup consisted in the EXOGAM gamma-array, coupled to the light-charged particles (LCP) DIAMANT detector and to the VAMOS heavy-ion spectrometer. The difficulties inherent to such measurements are enlightened. The coupling between EXOGAM and DIAMANT has been used to decrease the huge background caused by the radioactivity of the beam. It further permits assigning new gamma-ray transitions to specific residual nuclei. A gamma-ray belonging to the 130Pm level scheme has thus been observed for the first time.

Abstract: Cross sections, kinetic energy and angular distributions of fragments with charge 6$\le$Z$\le$28 emitted in 78,82Kr+40C at 5.5 MeV/A reactions were measured at the GANIL facility using the INDRA apparatus. This experiment aims to investigate the influence of the neutron enrichment on the decay mechanism of excited nuclei. Abstract: The probabilities of single-particle excitations that preserve completely paired configurations of the nuclear proton and neutron subsystems are formulated as a function of excitation energy in the framework of the superfluid nuclear model. These calculations are used to analyse measured data on even–odd structure in fission-fragment yields. Excitation energies acquired at scission are deduced. The strongly differing even–odd structures in proton and neutron numbers are explained within the assumption of thermal equilibrium of intrinsic excitations at scission.

Abstract: Spallation residues produced in 1 GeV per nucleon ${}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ on proton reactions have been studied using the Fragment Separator facility at GSI. Isotopic production cross sections of elements from ${}_{61}\mathrm{Pm}$ to ${}_{82}\mathrm{Pb}$ have been measured down to 0.1 mb with a high accuracy. The recoil kinetic energies of the produced fragments were also determined. The obtained cross sections agree with most of the few existing gamma-spectroscopic data. The data are compared with different intranuclear-cascade and evaporation-fission models. Drastic deviations were found for a standard code used in technical applications.

The EXOGAM gamma array was coupled with the DIAMANT light charged-particle detector and the VAMOS spectrometer. Abstract: The acoustic emission (AE) of short-lived static foams from non-ionic detergent Triton X-100 in ethanol–water solutions has been investigated. The AE of the foam drainage process has shown two different stages of behaviour. The first step (up to 80 s) was without the appearance of AE signals. During this stage, bubble rearrangement has been observed. The next, main stage of drainage process proceeded with a high intensity AE generation. Abstract: Total fission cross section induced by protons in 181Ta and 208Pb at energies in the range of 300 to 1000 A MeV have been measured at GSI (Germany) using the inverse kinematics technique. A dedicated setup with high efficiency made it possible to determine these cross sections with high accuracy. The new data seed light in the controversial results obtained so far and contribute to the understanding of the fission process at high excitation energies.

Abstract: International audience; The production of heavy neutron-rich nuclei approaching the r-process waiting point at N$\approx$126 has been investigated in fragmentation reactions of relativistic 238U and 208Pb projectiles. Using this technique we were able to identify 73 new heavy neutron-rich nuclei expanding considerably the north-west frontier of the chart of nuclide. Moreover, we were able to determine the half lives of 13 of those nuclides. The measured values are significantly shorter than the predictions used for r-process model calculations. These shorter half lives are understood as due to the role of first-forbidden transitions in the decays of these nuclei. The confirmation of these results for r-process nuclei at N$\approx$126 would indicate that the r-process at this point is faster than expected, leading to a larger production of the heaviest nuclei.

The experiment performed at the high-resolving-power magnetic spectrometer Fragment Separator at GSI made it possible to identify 40 new heavy neutron-rich nuclei: {sup 205}Pt, {sup 207-210}Au, {sup 211-216}Hg, {sup 214-217}Tl, {sup 215-220}Pb, {sup 219-224}Bi, {sup 223-227}Po, {sup 225-229}At, {sup 230,231}Rn, and {sup 233}Fr. The production cross sections of these nuclei were also determined and used to benchmark reaction codes that predict the production of nuclei far from stability.

Abstract: Based on a wide systematics of fragment distributions measured in thermal-neutron induced fission, the even-odd staggering in the fission-fragment element yields is investigated. The asymmetry evolution of the element yield distribution with the fissility of the fissioning nucleus is shown to be for an important part responsible for the decrease of the even-odd staggering with the fissility. The even-odd staggering close to symmetry is shown to be a small contribution to the global even-odd effect, and seems to vary little with the fissility of the nucleus. These experimental observations show that the established interpretation in which the intrinsic excitation energy at scission is accountable for the even-odd staggering amplitude has to be reconsidered.

Abstract: New data from GSI on the production-cross-section for fragmentation of the systems 56Fe+p and 56Fe+Ti at 1 A GeV revealed the appearance of even-odd staggering in the cross-section distribution for chains of isotopes with given N-Z. The staggering is strongly enhanced for the chain N=Z, it reduces as the production moves away from the N=Z chain, and it reverses for the most neutron-rich odd-A residues. Abstract: Expérience GANIL E511 , Spectromètre VAMOS; We investigated deep inelastic reactions in 238U+238U collisions at 6.09, 6.49, 6.91, 7.1 and 7.35×AMeV at the VAMOS spectrometer (GANIL). A large transfer of neutrons and protons was observed at all beam energies. For a transfer of more than 10 nucleons the total kinetic energy of the detected fragments becomes independent of the beam energy and reaches values far below the Coulomb barrier for spherical fragments. This points to the formation of a di-nuclear system in the entrance channel which develops an elongated shape and a strong neck. For such reactions we expect an enhanced lifetime of the di-nuclear system which is significantly longer than the time scale for elastic and quasi-elastic reactions. Different theoretical approaches predict delay times of more than 5 × 10−21 s for a subset of our data.

Abstract: Expérience GANIL; International audience; In the framework of nuclear waste incineration and design of new generation nuclear reactors, experimental data on fission probabilities and on fission fragment yields of minor actinides are crucial to design prototypes. Transfer-induced fission has proven to be an efficient method to study fission probabilities of actinides which cannot be investigated with standard techniques due to their high radioactivity. We report on the preliminary results of an experiment performed at GANIL that investigates fission probabilities with multi-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics between a 238U beam on a 12C target. Actinides from U to Cm were produced with an excitation energy range from 0 to 30 MeV. In addition, inverse kinematics allowed to characterize the fission fragments in mass and charge. A key point of the analysis resides in the identification of the actinides produced in the different transfer channels. The new annular telescope SPIDER was used to tag the target-like recoil nucleus of the transfer reaction and to determine the excitation energy of the actinide. The fission probability for each transfer channel is accessible and the preliminary results for 238U are promising.

Abstract: We investigated di-nuclear system formation with successive nucleon transfer at beam energies at and below the barrier in the superheavy systems 64 28 Ni + 207 82 Pb ( Z p r o j . + Z t a r g e t = 110 ) and 238 92 U + 238 92 U ( Z p r o j . + Z t a r g e t = 184 ). In both collision systems we observed a massive transfer of nucleons correlated with the dissipation of the entire kinetic energy. The results are in accordance with the two-center shell model which assumes the formation of a di-nuclear system as first step to fusion. The experiments have been performed at the velocity filter SHIP (GSI) and at the VAMOS spectrometer (GANIL).

Abstract: Excited states of neutron-rich odd-A and odd-odd Sc isotopes, populated in deep inelastic multinucleon transfer reactions, induced by a {sup 238}U beam on a thin {sup 48}Ca target, have been identified. A strong feeding of both yrast and nonyrast states in such a reaction is illustrated using a combination of a large efficiency spectrometer and a {gamma} detector array. The structure of the populated states is interpreted in terms of the role of the valence proton and neutrons and compared to shell model calculations in the full pf shell.

Abstract: Recent results from an experiment at GANIL, performed to investigate the main prop- erties of fission-fragment yields and energy distributions in different fissioning nuclei as a function of the excitation energy, in a neutron-rich region of actini des, are presented. Transfer reactions in inverse kinematics between a 238 U beam and a 12 C target produced different actinides, within a range of excitation energy below 30 MeV. These fissioning nuc lei are identified by detecting the target-like recoil, and their kinetic and excitation energ y are determined from the reconstruction of the transfer reaction. The large-acceptance spectrometer VAMOS was used to identify the mass, atomic number and charge state of the fission fragments in flig ht. As a result, the characteristics of the fission-fragment isotopic distributions of a variety of neutron-rich actinides are observed for the first time over the complete range of fission fragments.

Abstract: International audience; The even-odd staggering observed in the experimental fission-fragment nuclear-charge yields is investigated over a wide systematics of fission fragments measured at Lohengrin in direct kinematics and at GSI in inverse kinematics. The general increase of the even-odd staggering in the fission-fragment charge yields towards asymmetric charge splits is explained by the absorption of the unpaired nucleons by the heavy fragment. As a consequence, the well established trend of evenodd staggering in the fission fragment charge yields to decrease with the fissility is attributed in part to the asymmetry evolution of the charge distribution. This interpretation is strongly supported by the data measured at GSI, which cover the complete charge distribution and include precise yields at symmetry. They reveal that the even-odd effect around symmetry remains constant over a large range of fissility.

Abstract: The neutron deficient rare-earth nuclei of the A similar to 130 region are of particular interest since highly deformed prolate ground states are expected. Indeed these nuclei are predicted to show maximal ground-state deformations of beta(2) similar to 0.40 (axis ratio of 3:2), comparable to the deformation deduced for superdeformed cerium isotopes at high spin. A fusion-evaporation experiment was performed with radioactive ion beams at GANIL in October 2004 which had the goal to reach very proton-rich exotic nuclei located near the proton drip-line. A radioactive Kr-76 beam, delivered by the SPIRAL facility, was used to bombard a thin Ni-58 target. Emitted gamma-rays were detected by the EXOGAM gamma-ray spectrometer which was, for the first time, coupled with both the DIAMANT charged-particle array and the VAMOS spectrometer.

The measured cross sections are compared to $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ fission yields and model calculations to determine the optimum reaction mechanism to extend the limits of the chart of the nuclides around the r-process waiting point at $N=82$.

Abstract: Heavy neutron-rich nuclei close to N = 126 were produced by fragmentation of a 1 A GeV 208 Pb beam at the FRS at GSI. The β-decay half-lives of 8 nuclides have been determined using a novel numerical analysis method. The comparison of the data with model calculations provides indications on the importance of first-forbidden transitions around A = 195 . The measured data indicate that the matter flow in the r-process to heavier fissioning nuclei may be faster than previously expected.

Abstract: The nuclide cross sections and longitudinal velocity distributions of residues produced in the reactions of {sup 136}Xe and {sup 124}Xe at 1A GeV in a lead target were measured at the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, the fragment separator (FRS) of GSI. The data cover a broad range of isotopes of the elements between Z=3 and Z=56 for {sup 136}Xe and between Z=5 and Z=55 for {sup 124}Xe, reaching down to cross sections of a few microbarns. The velocity distributions exhibit a Gaussian shape for masses above A=20, while more complex behavior is observed for lighter masses. The isotopic distributions for both reactions preserve a memory on the projectile N/Z ratio over the whole residue mass range.

Abstract: The $^{7}\mathrm{H}$ and $^{6}\mathrm{H}$ nuclear systems were investigated via transfer reactions with a $^{8}\mathrm{He}$ beam at $15.4A$ MeV impinging in a $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ target. The experimental setup allowed a complete reconstruction of the reaction kinematics with the MAYA gas detector, based on the active-target concept, where the carbon atoms of the filling isobutane played also the role of reaction target. The $^{7}\mathrm{H}$ resonance was observed at $0.{57}_{\ensuremath{-}0.21}^{+0.42}$ MeV above the ${}^{3}\mathrm{H}+4n$ threshold with a width of $0.{09}_{\ensuremath{-}0.06}^{+0.94}$ MeV. The $^{6}\mathrm{H}$ system was formed at $2.{91}_{\ensuremath{-}0.95}^{+0.85}$ MeV with a resonance width of $1.{52}_{\ensuremath{-}0.35}^{+1.77}$ MeV. These results show the availability of nuclear structure information well outside the bounding limits, resulting in an extraordinary input to improve the present models and understanding of nuclear matter.

Abstract: International audience; Neutron-rich lead and bismuth isotopes have been produced by cold-fragmentation reactions induced by 238U projectiles at 1AGeV impinging on a beryllium target. The high-resolving power FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI allowed us to identify and determine the production cross-sections of 43 nuclei, nine of them for the first time (216,217,218,219Pb and 219,220,221,222,223Bi). These data are compared to other previously measured cross-sections in similar reactions and model calculations.
