Estimates of the land area occupied by wind energy differ by orders of magnitude due to data scarcity and inconsistent methodology. We developed a method that combines machine learning-based imagery analysis and geographic information systems and examined the land area of 318 wind farms (15,871 turbines) in the U.S. portion of the Western Interconnection. We found that prior land use and human modification in the project area are critical for land-use efficiency and land transformation of wind projects. Projects developed in areas with little human modification have a land-use efficiency of 63.8 ± 8.9 W/m2 (mean ±95% confidence interval) and a land transformation of 0.24 ± 0.07 m2/MWh, while values for projects in areas with high human modification are 447 ± 49.4 W/m2 and 0.05 ± 0.01 m2/MWh, respectively. We show that land resources for wind can be quantified consistently with our replicable method, a method that obviates >99% of the workload using machine learning. To quantify the peripheral impact of a turbine, buffered geometry can be used as a proxy for measuring land resources and metrics when a large enough impact radius is assumed (e.g., >4 times the rotor diameter). Our analysis provides a necessary first step toward regionalized impact assessment and improved comparisons of energy alternatives.

This study contributes to the existing literature on the influence of public subsidies on farmers' technical efficiency by highlighting the importance of separating persistent and transient inefficiency. Using data from a sample of French mixed (crop-livestock) farms, and relying on recent developments in stochastic frontier analysis, we find that public subsidies are positively associated with both persistent and transient technical inefficiency. The article is devoted to topical issues of ensuring measures for restoration of agricultural land. The article notes that in recent years there has been a further deterioration in the quality of agricultural land. It is emphasized that the aggravation of the crisis phenomena regarding the current state of land is largely due to the hostilities in the country. The article analyses new types of soil degradation that have become widespread as a result of Russian military aggression. The article focuses on the fact that agricultural land is subject to the greatest degradation compared to other categories of land. It is established that there are preliminary and basic legal measures for land restoration. It is substantiated that preliminary land restoration measures include: application of mineral fertilisers, bio-fertilisers; washing of saline soils, their irrigation; planting of trees, sowing of herbaceous plants. Attention is paid to the introduction of crop rotation, which is an important measure for restoring agricultural land. The article also examines the responsibilities of land owners and users in the field of land restoration. Based on the results of the analysis of legislation, it is proved that the main organisational and legal measures for the restoration of agricultural land are as follows: reclamation of disturbed lands, conservation of degraded, low-productive and technogenically polluted lands, and land reclamation of lands with disturbed water regime. It is stated that the implementation of the above measures has received proper legal support. The author highlights the considerations that today land restoration measures are being implemented, which have not received proper legal support. The author examines the peculiarities of implementation of bioremediation (divided into two types: biostimulation and bioaugmentation), phytoremediation based on the use of properties of certain plant species, and de toxification of contaminated land. The author makes proposals for improving land legislation by legislating such land restoration measures as bioremediation, phytoremediation, land detoxificatio n and environmental requirements for their implementation. The article examines the problematic aspects of the procedural legal personality of the State Service of Ukraine for geodesy, cartography and cadastre as a central body of executive power, which at the same time performs the function of state control over the use and protection of land of all categories and forms of ownership (with the exception of cases of decision-making by local councils on implementation of the function of state control by the executive committees of such councils), and is empowered to transfer state-owned land for agricultural purposes into the ownership or use of individuals and legal entities, and into the communal ownership of territorial communities. Judicial practice shows the existence of two diametrically opposed approaches to the defined procedural legal personality of the State Geocadastre, in particular, in cases following a prosecutor's lawsuit filed on the basis of Art. 24 of the Law «On the Prosecutor's Office» when representing the interests of the state in court in the event that the protection of the legitimate interests of the state is not carried out or is improperly carried out by the subject of power, to whose competence the relevant powers are assigned. The first approach boils down to the recognition of the State Geocadastre as a plaintiff in any cases related to the violation of land legislation; the second - consists in the fact that the State Geocadastre is a plaintiff only in clearly defined cases, and therefore in the absence of a body that should protect the violated interests of the state, the proper plaintiff is the prosecutor. Depending on which approach is used in a specific court case, the extent of procedural legal personality of the State Geocadastre will be different, given the determined procedural status of the State G eocadastre in a specific court case. In the article, the authors, based on the legislation, define their vision of the rules for the involvement of the State Geocadastre in the consideration of land disputes, which allows to determine uniform rules for determining the scope of procedural legal personality of the State Geocadastre in courts in accordance with the provisions of the legislation of Ukraine. The identification of agricultural lands is crucial for sustainable development in rural areas. In this paper, an augmented model that utilizes multimodal satellite-based data samples for identifying agricultural lands via incremental learning. The Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is used for augmenting collected images and data samples to enhance the accuracy of the model under real-time conditions. To identify agricultural lands, Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are trained on the augmented data samples. Additionally, the incorporation of Q-Learning for continuous optimization of the model to enhance its efficiency and effectiveness in identifying agricultural lands. The proposed model offers many edges over existing methods. Firstly, the use of multimodal satellite-based data samples allows for a comprehensive and accurate analysis of agricultural lands. Secondly, the incorporation of the Whale Optimization Algorithm enables the augmentation of collected data samples, leading to improved accuracy and reliability of the model. Thirdly, Deep CNNs allows the extraction of complex features from the data, leading to more accurate identification of agricultural lands. Finally, the use of Q-Learning ensures that the model is continuously optimized to improve its efficiency and effectiveness. The need for this work arises from the limitations of existing methods in accurately identifying agricultural lands. Traditional methods based on manual surveys and visual interpretation are time-consuming, expensive, and prone to errors. Moreover, existing automated methods often lack the ability to analyse multimodal satellite-based data samples and fail to provide accurate results. Based on these observations, the proposed augmented model offers a promising solution for identifying agricultural lands for sustainable development. • Six ensemble learning models and two base learner models were established to predict soil heavy metal chromium content. • Ensemble learning models were found to be superior to the single base learner model. • Kennard-Stone algorithm for dividing datasets demonstrates higher predictive accuracy compared to random dividing. • The stacking-2 model obtained the best prediction performance of soil heavy metal chromium content. Soil heavy metal chromium pollution poses significant threats to human health and ecosystems, necessitating accurate quantitative prediction methods for effective monitoring and management. This study aims to develop robust predictive models for soil chromium content in farmland soils of Mojiang Hani Autonomous County, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, China. These models utilize ensemble learning techniques based on visible and near-infrared spectroscopy. Operations before model building involved partitioning datasets with the Kennard-Stone algorithm to ensure representative training and testing sets. Visible and near-infrared spectroscopy-data preprocessing was performed using Savitzky-Golay smoothing and first-order derivative transformations to enhance signal quality. Bands selection was achieved through the Successive Projections Algorithm (SPA), effectively reducing data dimensionality and collinearity. Six ensemble learning models were constructed and assessed for their predictive performance: Bagging-DTR, Random Forest (RF), Adaboost-DTR, XGBoost-DTR, Stacking-1, and Stacking-2. These models utilized Decision Trees (DTR) and Linear Regression (LR) as base learners. Results demonstrated that ensemble models significantly outperformed individual base learners. Notably, the Stacking-2 model achieved the highest accuracy with an R^2 of 0.954, RMSE of 125.967 mg/kg, and RPD of 4.667. To validate the model's practical applicability, spatial interpolation of soil Cr content was conducted using the Kriging method based on Stacking-2 model predictions. The spatial distribution maps of measured and predicted values exhibited high congruence, underscoring the model's effectiveness in accurately mapping Cr distribution across the study area. This study underscores the efficacy of integrating ensemble learning with visible and near-infrared spectroscopy-data preprocessing and SPA for precise soil heavy metal prediction. In light of the urgent need for farms to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining economic viability, this paper analyses technical and environmental inefficiencies and their determinants based on a flexible multi‐equation by‐production stochastic frontier model, which accounts for the stochastic dependence between good and bad outputs via a copula function. An empirical application to Dutch dairy farms illustrates the distortions in the inefficiency scores and in the estimates of their determinants that occur when the dependence between good and bad outputs is ignored. The empirical results indicate a strong positive dependence between the good output (milk) and the bad output (methane emissions), which is particularly pronounced in the upper tail of the distribution. Notably, farms exhibit high efficiency in maximising their good output and minimising their bad output. Subsidies are negatively related to good output inefficiency but positively related to bad output inefficiency, while stock density exhibits a negative association with inefficiencies in both outputs. Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTPlants face numerous environmental challenges from biotic and abiotic stressors, with soil salinization emerging as a significant global concern. The coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, face severe environmental challenges due to discharge of saline water from shrimp farms exacerbates this issue, compromising the viability of paddy and other crops in the vicinity. This study explores the phytoremediation potential of Suaeda fruticosa in addressing soil salinity resulting from shrimp farming activities under field conditions over a 120-day period to restore soil health in salt affected soil. This research demonstrates Suaeda fruticosa’s exceptional salt tolerance and bioaccumulation potential in facilitating soil restoration. Significant enhancements were observed in various growth parameters, including 466% increase in plant height, 338% in fresh weight and 387% in dry weight. Biochemical parameters also showed substantial enhancements with total chlorophyll, protein, proline, phenol, and glycinebetaine levels increasing by 655%, 588%, 690%, 153%, and 531%, respectively. Enzymatic activities exhibited notable elevations as well, with catalase, peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase activities escalating by 258%, 587%, and 121% respectively, indicating robust adaptation to saline environments. Moreover, Suaeda fruticosa exhibited remarkable bioaccumulation capabilities, accumulating 461 kg NaCl ha−1. This led to substantial improvements in soil characteristics, including a reduction in pH from 8.8 to 6.49, electrical conductivity from 5.7 to 1.53 dSm−1, and sodium adsorption ratio from 16.1 to 4.4 mmol L−1. The successive cultivation of Suaeda fruticosa in this study, has proven to be a viable strategy for reclaiming salt-affected lands, thereby alleviating a significant constraint on crop productivity.In this phytoremediation study, Suaeda fruticosa can effectively bioaccumulate considerable amounts of NaCl from the soil, leading to marked improvements in soil quality. This includes reductions in soil pH, electrical conductivity, and sodium adsorption ratio. A salt marsh halophyte, Suaeda fruticosa not only accumulates salt but also adapts to such conditions by synthesizing substantial amounts of organic solutes and enhancing its antioxidant machinery to mitigate toxicity induced by ionic stress. This research underscores a promising and sustainable approach for the reclamation of saline-affected agricultural soils, offering a viable solution to enhance crop productivity in coastal regions impacted by shrimp aquaculture. The evaluation of land suitability for agricultural production is a complex process that requires specialized information and expert analysis. This paper introduces the Soil Suitability Evaluation (SSE) model, a computer program designed to assess land suitability for agriculture. The model considers soil surface conditions (erosion, micro-relief, and slope), physical characteristics (texture and depth), and chemical properties (salinity, sodicity, fertility, and calcium carbonate). It involves calculating these soil characteristics along with their respective weights. Compared to other land suitability evaluation methods, the SSE model provides realistic and practical results including assessments of soil and crop suitability. The risk for transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus from dairy cows to humans is currently low; however, personal protective equipment (PPE) use during work activities on dairy farms has not been well described. PPE use can protect farmworkers when they are working with highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1)–infected cows. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) offered PPE to all Colorado farms before or during an A(H5N1) outbreak in cows in 2024. CDPHE surveyed 83 dairy workers from three farms with a confirmed bovine A(H5N1) outbreak. Frequently reported farm worker activities included milking cows or working in the milking parlor (51%), cleaning cow manure (49%), and transporting cows (46%). Frequently reported PPE items available to workers before A(H5N1) outbreaks included gloves (88%), eye protection (e.g., safety glasses or goggles) (76%), rubber boots or boot covers (71%), and head covers (69%). N95 respirator use was low among workers who were exposed to ill cows after detection of A(H5N1) virus (26%). PPE use while working with ill cows increased a mean of 28% after detection of A(H5N1) virus on surveyed farms; use of eye protection while milking cows increased the most (40%). Public health PPE distribution, education, and collaboration with CDA might have increased PPE use on dairy farms with A(H5N1) virus–infected cows and mitigated risk for farmworkers acquiring A(H5N1) virus. To address national and global demand for agro-based products, agricultural expansion has rapidly become a norm in Brazil since 1950s to date. In recent decades, agricultural expansion and technological advancement have placed the country among the top producers and exporters of agricultural products. The paradigm shifts in farming system from conventional to integrated approach has brought significant changes in land use, which consequently influenced carbon sequestration and soil organic carbon (SOC). This is more prevalent in the State of Mato Grosso, one of the most producers of food in Brazil. On this background, we hypothesized that though forests have potential for SOC stock, which decreases due to conversion to cropland but in longer-term with sustainable management, carbon might accrual significantly in cropland. Therefore, this paper aimed to unveil the nexus between long term land use and carbon stock changes and estimate future SOC stocks in Mato Grosso State of Brazil. To achieve this aim, a hybridization of machine learning and the InVEST prediction models was applied to estimate the land use changes and the SOC stocks between 1990 and 2020 and estimate for 2050. The study revealed that between 1990, 2020, and 2050, croplands increased significantly by at least 78%, pastures decreased by 32%, while forests decreased marginally by about 4% due to agricultural expansions. However, in 1990 and 2020, the SOC stock was slightly up to 147.34 Mg ha−1, it recorded an increase after a longer-time (i.e., in 2050). This increase was substantially under the forests, and marginally in the croplands. Climate-smart agricultural systems such as crop-livestock forest, integrated crop-livestock, and other conservation agricultural practices have great potential to contribute to sustainable development by increasing the levels of carbon in agricultural soils especially, after a longer period. Therefore, agricultural policies geared towards low carbon agriculture should be fully integrated into the various government decision making processes as this will guarantee food security and maximize soil carbon sequestration and stocks in the long term. Simultaneously, it is crucial to promote the dissemination of best practices for implementing and sustaining conservation efforts, thereby safeguarding the carbon stocks established to prevent their depletion. Dietary diversity has been widely used as a proxy indicator for micronutrient adequacy. In low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs), including Rwanda, women are at high risk of inadequate micronutrient intake resulting from poorly diversified diets. This study was conducted to examine the factors associated with women's dietary diversity, with emphasis on homestead production diversity and market access in the Northern Province of Rwanda. A cross‐sectional design was used, involving 606 women aged 18–49 years. Linear regression analyses were performed to examine the association between various factors and women's dietary diversity. Results show that 84% of the sample households raised at least one livestock species. Seventy‐one percent of the households had no agricultural land. Eighty percent of those without land had a homestead garden on which they grew food crops, mainly vegetables and fruit trees. The average crop species was 2.3. On average, women consumed 3 out of 9 food groups. The homestead production diversity score was positively associated with women's dietary diversity score (β = 0.16, p < 0.001). Women's dietary diversity score was negatively associated with distance from the household to the nearest market (β = −0.08, p = 0.027) and household food insecurity (β = −0.06, p < 0.001). Maternal education (p < 0.001), household wealth index (p < 0.05), and ownership of more than 2.5 acres compared to being without land (p < 0.05) were associated with women's dietary diversity score. The dietary diversity of women could be enhanced through interventions that promote the diversity of livestock and crop species produced through homestead production. Potential interventions to explore may include integrated farming systems that combine small livestock and crop production utilising improved livestock breeds and high‐quality seeds and planting materials of high‐yielding varieties of fruits and vegetables, along with rainwater harvesting to facilitate small‐scale irrigation. The impact of such interventions on women's dietary diversity can be further reinforced by parallel programmes aimed at improving women's education and the socioeconomic status of households. Colibacillosis caused by avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is causing economic losses to the global poultry industry. Increased prevalence of antibiotic resistance in APEC is the leading cause for increased indiscriminate use of various antimicrobial compounds in farms. The study aimed to investigate the presence of phenotypic and genotypic markers for antibiotic resistance, metals, and biocides in APEC from Bangladeshi poultry and details about the antimicrobials used in poultry farms. In total, 55 APEC were isolated from hearts or liver samples of 86 sick or dead chickens using culture on agar plate and biochemical testing. APEC isolates were tested for antibiotic susceptibility to 14 antimicrobial agents according to the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing. A series of PCRs was performed to screen the presence of genes for quinolones, colistin, aminoglycosides, ESBL, metals, and biocides. Detailed information regarding antibiotic use was collected from farmers during clinical investigations. Resistance was found to 10 antibiotics and prevalence was as follows: ampicillin (86%), ciprofloxacin (86%), trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole (73%), chloramphenicol (33%), mecillinam (13%), gentamicin (11%), cefoxitin (11%), cefotaxime (9%), tigecycline (2%), and nitrofurantoin (2%). The most common multiresistance phenotype was CIP-AMP-SXT, and 35% of isolates were multidrug resistant. Genotypic analysis confirmed the presence of quinolone resistance genes [qnrS1 and aac-(6')-lb-cr], silver-resistant genes (silE), and mercury-resistant genes (merA) but not others. In total, 88% farmers were using different antimicrobial compounds, and, of them, 56% were using antimicrobials without prescriptions from veterinarians. Ciprofloxacin was most extensively used followed by oxytetracycline. Critically important antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, colistin, and gentamicin are extensively used in the farms. This study confirmed the presence of antibiotics, metals, and biocide-resistant APEC in poultry farms in Bangladesh. Increased resistance to quinolones is a serious ongoing problem. In the face of global population growth and climate change, the protection and rational utilization of cropland are crucial for food security and ecological balance. However, the complex topography and unique ecological environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau results in a lack of high-precision cropland monitoring data. Therefore, this paper constructs a high-quality cropland dataset for the YarlungZangbo-Lhasa-Nyangqv River region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and proposes an MSC-ResUNet model for cropland extraction based on Landsat data. The dataset is annotated at the pixel level, comprising 61 Landsat 8 images in 2023. The MSC-ResUNet model innovatively combines multiscale features through residual connections and multiscale skip connections, effectively capturing features ranging from low-level spatial details to high-level semantic information and further enhances performance by incorporating depthwise separable convolutions as part of the feature fusion process. Experimental results indicate that MSC-ResUNet achieves superior accuracy compared to other models, with F1 scores of 0.826 and 0.856, and MCC values of 0.816 and 0.847, in regional robustness and temporal transferability tests, respectively. Performance analysis across different months and band combinations demonstrates that the model maintains high recognition accuracy during both growing and non-growing seasons, despite the study area's complex landforms and diverse crops. Acquiring the spatiotemporal patterns of cropland disturbance is of great significance for regional sustainable agricultural development and environmental protection. However, effective monitoring of cropland disturbances remains a challenge owing to the complexity of the terrain landscape and the reliability of the training samples. This study integrated automatic training sample generation, random forest classification, and the LandTrendr time-series segmentation algorithm to propose an efficient and reliable medium-resolution cropland disturbance monitoring scheme. Taking the Amur state of Russia in the Amur river basin, a transboundary region between Russia and China in east Asia with rich agriculture resources as research area, this approach was conducted on the Google Earth Engine cloud-computing platform using extensive remote-sensing image data. A high-confidence sample dataset was then created and a random forest classification algorithm was applied to generate the cropland classification probabilities. LandTrendr time-series segmentation was performed on the interannual cropland classification probabilities. Finally, the identification, spatial mapping, and analysis of cropland disturbances in Amur state were completed. Further cross-validation comparisons of the accuracy assessment and spatiotemporal distribution details demonstrated the high accuracy of the dataset, and the results indicated the applicability of the method. The study revealed that 2815.52 km2 of cropland was disturbed between 1990 and 2021, primarily focusing on the southern edge of the Amur state. The most significant disturbance occurred in 1991, affecting 1431.48 km2 and accounting for 50.84% of the total disturbed area. On average, 87.98 km2 of croplands are disturbed annually. Additionally, 2495.4 km2 of cropland was identified as having been disturbed at least once during the past 32 years, representing 83% of the total disturbed area. This study introduced a novel approach for identifying cropland disturbance information from long time-series probabilistic images. Streams and river ecosystems contribute to global carbon cycle via collecting, storing, transforming and producing organic matter. The general paradigm is that most stream ecosystems are heterotrophic, respiring more carbon than they produce, nonetheless, many streams are autotrophic for some time, and a few may autotrophic on an annual scale. Periodic autotrophy is associated with high light, low disturbance, and low watershed carbon inputs, but limited examples of annual-scale autotrophy make it difficult to estimate how frequently net autotrophy occurs and what drives this net storage or export of carbon. Here, we use a spatially and temporally extensive dataset of 236 rivers across the continental USA with 921 years of daily metabolism data to assess the scale of annual and seasonal autotrophy and estimate its strongest covariates. Only 6% of rivers in this dataset were consistently autotrophic on an annual timescale, but 67% of rivers experienced at least one autotrophic event lasting longer than 7 days. These periodic autotrophic events frequently began in spring and summer. By comparing the 37 annually autotrophic rivers identified in our dataset to examples in the literature, we found that anthropogenically driven autotrophy arising from agricultural and urban land use is underrepresented in the study of riverine metabolism. We used quantile regression models to test hypothesized drivers of autotrophy and a sparse lasso technique to broadly explore a range of 86 watershed and in-stream covariates. Our models support previous findings that high light, long periods between disturbances, and low terrestrial production covary with more autotrophy. Land abandonment promotes forest expansion into abandoned agricultural lands in Europe. This process leads to changes that affect several ecosystem services, but it is considered a low‐cost strategy to restore soil functions in past agricultural lands. Soil microbial communities play a key role in restoring functions. However, the relationship among forest expansion, microbial communities, and soil functioning is unclear.In this study, we used a Juniperus thurifera expansion gradient on abandoned agricultural lands in Alto Tajo National Park (Spain) to discover the changes elicited by the soil microbial communities and their functions along this gradient considering two microhabitats, under the canopy and open areas. Specifically, our objectives were (i) to analyse how soil properties (organic matter and pH), microbial communities (using PLFAs‐NFLAs) and enzymatic activities (related to C, N and P cycling) varied along the forest expansion gradient and between microhabitats and (ii) to decipher the pathways by which soil properties control the carbon and nutrient cycling in soils.The forest expansion gradient had a direct negative effect on phosphatase activity. The microhabitat showed a positive direct effect on organic matter content, pH, actinomycetes and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi biomass and on soil C and P cycling. Moreover, the biomass of gram‐positive bacteria determined the biomass of other microbial groups.Synthesis and Applications: Though its effectiveness is variable, passive restoration can be more effective than active restoration. Our research indicates that passive tree colonisation of past agricultural land is enough to achieve soil functionality similar to a mature forest for most variables studied. However, some variables would need more time to reach mature forest levels, such as total microbial biomass and organic matter content. Therefore, to support ecosystem recovery, the management of this applied forest ecology strategy requires continuous monitoring of newly established trees and soil to elucidate the time needed to achieve mature soil properties. In the context of deepening national concern about the future of farming in India, professionals in Bengaluru's (Bangalore's) booming information technology and related industries are purchasing agricultural land at the edges of the city and farming in their free time. These "techie farmers" invest their money and time in cultivation either (1) to generate idealized agrarian traditions and aesthetics or (2) to prove that with the right approach, agriculture can be economically and ecologically viable. Techie farmers' weekends spent on the farm are a form of what I call "productive leisure": the act of engaging in leisure activities that are positioned as productive alternatives to other forms of work and play. Yet techie farmers' experiments in cultivating self and society remain anchored in and further entrench the inequalities that make agriculture a precarious livelihood strategy for some and a productive leisure activity for others. Sub-Saharan Africa's rapid urban growth is causing a decline in urban agricultural land, reducing access to healthy local food for citizens. This paper quantitatively and spatially describes the contribution of urban and peri-urban producers to the availability and accessibility of fresh leafy vegetables in the growing city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Based on over 700 surveys with food vendors and consumers, as well as ethnographic research with farmers, we show how a total of 70 per cent of all amaranth consumed in Dar es Salaam was found to be produced within the city. With an average distance travelled from farm to fork of 11 km, leafy vegetables have a strongly localised foodshed. The results show the ongoing significance of urban areas in meeting their own food demands, emphasising the necessity to explicitly integrate food provisioning in the planning of growing African cities. Small concentrations of herbicide, such as those found in drift, can affect nontarget plants at different life‐history stages including seed germination and seedling emergence as well as seedling growth. Fragmented landscapes, such as those in the northern Great Plains, lead to increased proximity of ecological restoration sites to agricultural lands using herbicides. Germination, emergence, and growth are crucial life‐history stages leading to ecological restoration success, but these stages are sensitive to impacts from external factors such as herbicide exposure. A lab germination experiment and a greenhouse emergence experiment were performed to examine the effect of herbicides (2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid [2,4‐D], atrazine, and trifluralin) on species used in ecological restorations in the northern Great Plains. Seed germination, seedling emergence, and seedling growth of many study species decreased with exposure to herbicides at different concentrations representative of herbicide drift. At concentrations as low as 0.1% recommended application rate 2,4‐D elicited broad effects on final seed germination percentage and germination rate. Atrazine affected seedling emergence and growth for a number of study species at concentrations as low as 10% recommended application rate. Trifluralin affected germination, emergence, and growth of the fewest number of study species. The information gained from these experiments can be used to inform restoration practitioners of best practices and recommended species to use when implementing ecological restoration adjacent to agricultural lands. To understand the potential consequences of arable land use changes for insect conservation and ecosystem functioning, it is fundamental to know how insect species with different functional traits respond to crop choice and production method.This study examined the effects of crop type and production method on functional traits of butterfly, bumblebee and carabid beetle communities using species abundance data from 78 fields in Southern Finland. Surrounding landscape composition was also accounted for. The studied traits were associated with dispersal capacity, habitat or diet specialization and phenology—the key determinants modifying species responses to agricultural disturbances and land use changes.Butterfly habitat breadth was narrowest and wingspan shortest in long‐term fallows. Fallows also supported the highest share of butterflies overwintering in early development stages and bumblebees with late‐emerging queens. The tongue length of bumblebees was longest in organic oat fields, probably due to flowering weeds with long corolla.For carabid beetles, the proportion of poor flyers and carnivores was highest in perennial crops and fallows. Carabid beetles overwintering as adults were relatively more abundant in organic than in conventional production, probably due to more intensive tillage in organic fields.In all insect groups, poor dispersers and/or specialists decreased with increasing arable land cover in the surrounding landscape.Increasing the area of long‐term fallows and perennial crops and enhancing within‐field plant diversity while maintaining landscape heterogeneity would promote insect species sensitive to agricultural disturbances and land use changes and their associated ecosystem services in boreal farmland. This paper draws on research on infrastructure‐led development and urbanisation in Nairobi to explore the new urban geographies of rentier capitalism in Africa. Under the banner of Kenya's Vision 2030 national development strategy, Nairobi's agrarian hinterlands have been transformed by major road building projects. These initiatives have catalysed a peri‐urban property boom characterised by the conversion of agricultural and ranching land into urban real estate and the verticalisation of road corridors. The paper identifies four processes of land transformation driving this real estate market expansion: commodification; speculation; autoconstruction; and assetisation. Adopting a multi‐scalar conjunctural approach, it argues that rentier capitalism in this context is spatialised through the dramatic extension of real estate frontiers along the route of peri‐urban road corridors. Development along these corridors assumes a "grey" character that defies conventional formal–informal distinctions, enabling the extraction of large rentier profits and encouraging the further proliferation of frontier spaces. Numerous studies have investigated bird diversity-environment relationships in agricultural landscapes. While many studies have emphasized the importance of natural/semi-natural elements and their diversity within or surrounding farmlands, it remains unclear how crop diversity impacts birds. There is also a significant gap in our knowledge regarding the effects of temporal changes in crop composition on bird diversity. Using small farmlands in a sub-tropical city of China, we examined how spatial and temporal variation of crops and other local farmland features was linked to species diversity of birds and their traits. In small peri‑urban agricultural areas of Guangzhou, we collected bird and crop/non-crop data approximately bimonthly from December 2021 to October 2022. Overall crop diversity and seasonal crop changes were indexed by alpha diversity (Shannon-Wiener index) and beta diversity, respectively. Both alpha and beta crop diversities were positively associated with Shannon-Wiener diversity of birds. Alpha crop diversity also tended to have a positive impact on species richness. Percent cover of woody vegetation showed a positive effect on all three bird diversity indices, i.e., species richness, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and evenness. Percent cover of rice affected species richness positively and evenness negatively, whereas the effects of percent cover of corn were the opposite. In a fourth-corner analysis, the abundance of plant/seed-eating birds was negatively associated with alpha crop diversity, whereas the abundance of ground-foraging birds was positively associated with beta crop diversity. These patterns indicate that seasonally dynamic crop changes as well as local crop diversity can influence bird diversity and traits in small farmlands. They also suggest that natural/semi-natural woody vegetation, such as trees and shrubs, play a critical role in enhancing species diversity of birds in farmlands dominated by herbaceous edible crops. To characterize the potential for exposure of amphibian terrestrial life stages to plant protection products (PPP), we studied the occurrence and habitat use of adult and metamorph common frogs (Rana temporaria) and common toads (Bufo bufo) in an agricultural landscape in Germany. The four selected study sites were breeding ponds with approximately 80% agricultural land within a 1‐km radius. Adults were monitored by radio tracking for two years, and metamorph numbers were assessed for one summer using pitfall traps alongside drift fences. The results demonstrate that adults were rarely present in arable fields at any of the sites (overall 0.5% and 4% of total observations for frogs and toads, respectively). Metamorph captures in arable fields were more variable, ranging from 1.2% to 38.8% (frogs) and from 0.0% to 26.1% (toads) across study sites. Unsurprisingly, most captures in arable fields for both toad and frog metamorphs occurred at the site where the pond was completely surrounded by arable fields. Overall, the presence of adult amphibians in arable fields was limited and, for the metamorphs, occurred primarily when crops were denser and PPP spray interception higher. Diurnal hiding behavior was observed with the highest activity recorded at night, further reducing the risk of dermal exposure from direct PPP overspraying. In addition, it appeared that alternative habitats, such as woody structures or water bodies in the broader surrounding area, were preferred by the animals over the arable areas. The use of buffer zones around water bodies in agricultural areas would be an effective risk mitigation measure to protect terrestrial adults and metamorphs residing there and would reduce spray drift entry into water bodies during PPP application. Natural river landscapes can be biodiversity hotspots but are one of the most human altered ecosystems with habitats significantly damaged around the world, and a third of fish populations threatened with extinction. While riparian ecosystems have been negatively altered by anthropogenic activities, effective planning and restoration strategies can reverse negative impacts by improving habitat quality. However, restoring rivers requires appropriate data on current riparian health while also considering priorities for different stakeholders. To address this, a Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to create a new and transferable restoration priority model based on a section of the river Linth in Switzerland as a case study. The restoration priority model is founded on connectivity, river condition, national priority species and species hotspots. Landscape change of the riparian zone was analyzed using aerial imagery and landscape metrics. Almost a quarter of rivers within the study area were considered high or very high restoration priority, with many aquatic species set to benefit from restoration. From 1946 to 2019, the riparian landscape became highly fragmented due to significant growth in impervious surfaces and a concomitant loss of agricultural land. The GIS model provides a tool by which environmental agencies can manage natural features over large scales, while also planning priorities and targeting conservation strategies to the areas of greatest need. Soil organic carbon (SOC) storage is a critical ecosystem service for reducing CO2 emissions. Terrestrial ecosystems, including the agriculture lands, hold the second largest carbon reserves after oceans, containing 2,344 Gt of carbon. Agroforestry plays an important role in sequestering (SOC) which is essential for mitigating CO2. Due to increased anthropogenic activities, global CO2 emissions continue to rise. In agroecological zones, SOC serves as a key reservoir for atmospheric CO2. This research evaluates sustainability comparison between two land types for carbon sequestration potential and soil fertility parameters in District Multan, Pakistan; mango-based agroforestry (MBA) and cropland (CL) respectively. Soil samples were collected randomly at a depth of 20 cm from the locations; under tree shade in mango-based agroforestry (MBAUS), outside the tree shade (MBA), and cropland (CL). These samples were tested for analysis for (SOC), organic matter (OM %), nitrogen percentage (N %), saturation percentage (SP %), bulk density (BD), and carbon-to-nitrogen (C: N) ratio between mean values of agroforestry and CL. Results indicated that the amount of SOC was higher in agroforestry (0.64) compared to CL (0.43). Similarly, OM% was 1.15 in agroforestry and 0.75% in CL. N% was 0.055 in agroforestry and 0.037 in CL, C: N ratio (12:1) in agroforestry versus (11:1) in CL. SP was greater in CL (36.1) than in agroforestry (34.1), similarly, BD was higher in CL (1.361 g/cm3) and (1.077 g/cm3) in agroforestry. The study employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments and four replications. ANOVA was used for data analysis. We examine an extension of the latent class stochastic frontier model (LCSFM) to productivity estimation and the decomposition of productivity change into technical change, output-oriented technical efficiency change, and scale change. We base our productivity estimation on a Multi-class Grifell-Tatjé, Lovell & Orea Malmquist (GLOM) index. An advantage of this new productivity index is to account for classes' posterior probabilities to derive individual farm parameters. In addition, we extend our analysis to estimate a metafrontier GLOM productivity index to explore potentialities when all firms use the best available technologies. An empirical application to a sample of French sheep and goat farms observed between 2002 and 2021 confirms the necessity to account for technological heterogeneity when measuring productivity change. Among the two classes of farms identified by the LCSFM, the intensive class experiences TFP gains, while the extensive class sees its TFP worsening. However, the gap between intensive and extensive technologies seems to reduce over time. ABSTRACT Simplified agricultural land with high chemical input is increasingly replacing natural habitats in many parts of the world. This loss and fragmentation of natural areas may have profound impacts on an array of wildlife, including predatory arthropods that provide natural biocontrol of agricultural pests. There is increasing interest in utilising short‐term seminatural habitat restoration in agricultural systems to support populations of beneficial organisms. We assessed the impact of two types of short‐term set‐asides on the diversity and abundance/activity density of phytophagous and predatory arthropods. We found that flower‐enhanced set‐asides supported higher abundances of both phytophagous and predatory arthropods compared to control crop fields. In addition, we found that both set‐aside types (flower enhanced and traditional) supported a more active and diverse community of beneficial predatory carabid beetles, with particularly strong trends in set‐asides supplemented with flowering plants. These results suggest that small‐scale, temporary, seminatural habitats in agricultural systems provide support for a diverse and abundant community of both beneficial and phytophagous arthropods. Frequent wind erosion events in semi‐arid regions can lead to significant atmospheric microplastic (MP) emissions from croplands. We examine observed and predicted characteristics of atmospheric MPs over cropland in Northern China. Measurements showed that fibers were the predominant morphology, accounting for 69% of the 198 observed MPs. The observed atmospheric MP abundance varied widely, averaging 0.088 # m−3 in the absence of air masses passing through near‐surface croplands and increasing significantly to 0.26 # m−3 when such air masses were present. The predictions of deposition flux for atmospheric MPs over croplands indicated a spatial variation ranging from less than 0.5 g km−2 day−1 in the north to over 15 g km−2 day−1 in the south, corresponding to an average of approximately 13.3 g km−2 day−1. Our findings highlight the dual role of surface soil as both a potential source and sink of atmospheric MPs, underscoring the need for further research on the regional dynamics of wind‐driven MP emissions and their associated ecosystem health risks in semi‐arid croplands. Do the career motives of presidential appointees affect program administration? To answer this question, I examine the phased development of policy communication of the U.S. Farm Service Agency (FSA) across states from 2002 to 2018 based on an original collection of historical official websites. This is a rare policy context for examining why peer appointees administer the same programs differently. Linking the state‐by‐state development of FSA newsletters to the career trajectories of state executive directors (SEDs), the presidential appointees who lead state FSAs, I show that SEDs interested in elective office post‐appointment are associated with faster institutionalization of newsletters. Examining these newsletters’ content, I then show that SEDs interested in elective office or a career in advocacy include more participation‐encouraging language in newsletters. These results suggest that appointees’ career goals outside the bureaucracy can potentially expedite innovation in program implementation and enhance the delivery of government benefits to the public, with implications for selecting appointees to enhance bureaucratic performance. Here, we demonstrate how environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling can be used to systematically collect species occupancy data rapidly and efficiently across vast spatial domains to improve understanding of factors influencing species distributions.South‐eastern Australia.We use a widely distributed, but near‐threatened species, the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), as a test case and undertake an environmentally stratified systematic survey to assess the presence–absence of platypus eDNA at 504 sites across 584,292 km2 of south‐eastern Australia, representing ~37% of the species' extensive distribution. Site occupancy‐detection models were used to analyse how landscape‐ and site‐level factors affect platypus occupancy, enabling us to incorporate uncertainty at the different levels inherent in eDNA sampling (site, water sample replicate and qPCR replicate).Platypus eDNA was detected at 272 sites (~54%) with platypuses more likely to occupy sites in catchments with increased runoff and less zero‐flow days, and sites with access to banks suitable for burrowing. Platypuses were less likely to occupy sites in catchments with a high proportion of shrubs and grasslands, or agricultural land use.These data provide an important large‐scale validation of the landscape‐ and site‐level factors influencing platypus occupancy that can be used to inform future conservation efforts. Our case study shows that systematically designed, stratified eDNA surveys provide an efficient means to understand how environmental characteristics affect species occupancy across broad environmental gradients. This study assesses the extent to which growers integrate the 13 principles of agroecology within their farm activities. This is a first step that helps to determine the changes required in different farm components to foster the adoption of agroecology. We used the holistic Farm-Level Agroecology Criteria Tool (F-ACT) to assess the alignment with agroecological principles of 31 farms representative of smallholder irrigated family farms in the Merguellil Plain region of central Tunisia. Although various agroecological practices were implemented, the results revealed little integration of agroecological principles at the farm level, estimated at 34% of the full transition. In a difficult production resource access context, recycling and reducing inputs were the principles mostly applied, with the goal of improving resource use efficiency and farm system resilience. More specialized and market-oriented farms tended to rely on conventional practices, while diversified farms, often cultivating their own land, exhibited more sustainable practices. Although producers’ dominant rationale was to improve their market access, thereby often resorting to more conventional practices, we nevertheless noted interesting practices such as mixed crop and livestock production, which could facilitate the transition to more agroecological systems in these lowlands where production factors are scarce. Accurate estimation of gross primary production (GPP) of paddy rice fields is essential for understanding cropland carbon cycles, yet remains challenging due to spatial heterogeneity. In this study, we integrated high-resolution unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery into a leaf biochemical properties-based model for improving GPP estimation. The key parameter, maximum carboxylation rate at the top of the canopy ( V c m a x , 0 25 ), was quantified using various spatial information representation methods, including mean (μref) and standard deviation (σref) of reflectance, gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM)-based features, local binary pattern histogram (LBPH), and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our models were evaluated using a two-year eddy covariance (EC) system and UAV measurements. The result shows that incorporating spatial information can vastly improve the accuracy of V c m a x , 0 25 and GPP estimation. CNN methods achieved the best V c m a x , 0 25 estimation, with an R of 0.94, an RMSE of 19.44 μmol m−2 s−1, and an MdAPE of 11%, and further produced highly accurate GPP estimates, with an R of 0.92, an RMSE of 6.5 μmol m−2 s−1, and an MdAPE of 23%. The μref-GLCM texture features and μref-LBPH joint-driven models also gave promising results. However, σref contributed less to V c m a x , 0 25 estimation. The Shapley value analysis revealed that the contribution of input features varied considerably across different models. The CNN model focused on nir and red-edge bands and paid much attention to the subregion with high spatial heterogeneity. The μref-LBPH joint-driven model mainly prioritized reflectance information. The μref-GLCM-based features joint-driven model emphasized the role of GLCM texture indices. As the first study to leverage the spatial information from high-resolution UAV imagery for GPP estimation, our work underscores the critical role of spatial information and provides new insight into monitoring the carbon cycle. Reliable and continuous information on cropping intensity is crucial for assessing cropland utilization and formulating policies regarding cropland protection and management. However, there is still a lack of high-resolution cropping intensity maps for recent years, particularly in fragmented agricultural regions. In this study, we combined Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 imagery to generate cropping intensity maps from 2019 to 2023 at a 10 m resolution for Shaanxi Province, China. First, the satellite imagery was harmonized to construct 10-day composite enhanced vegetation index (EVI) time series. Then, the cropping intensity was determined by counting the number of valid EVI peaks within a year. Assessment based on 578 sample points showed a high level of accuracy, with overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient values exceeding 0.96 and 0.93, respectively. We further analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of cropping intensity and generated a map of abandoned cropland in Shaanxi. The results indicated that cropland in Shaanxi Province was mainly utilized for single-cropping (52.9% of area), followed by double-cropping (35.2%), with non-cropping accounting for 11.9%. Cropping intensity tended to be lower in the north and higher in the south. Temporally, the average cropping intensity of Shaanxi increased from 1.1 to over 1.3 from 2019 to 2023. Despite this upward trend, large areas of cropland were abandoned in northern Shaanxi. These results demonstrate the potential of utilizing Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 imagery to identify cropping intensity dynamics in fragmented agricultural regions and to guide more efficient cropland management. Dairy farming is a notable source of nitrogen (N) emissions, impacting both atmospheric and aquatic ecosystems, thus necessitating a detailed analysis of nutrient dynamics to curtail nutrient wastage. However, N flow variability and its environmental ramifications differ markedly among dairy farms, and a holistic understanding of these differences is lacking in Inner Mongolia, the biggest dairy production province in China. Utilizing data from 187 dairy farms and employing the NUFER-farm model, this study assessed N flows, N use efficiency (NUE), and N losses across four predominant dairy farming systems in Inner Mongolia. These systems include traditional pastoral dairy farms (PF), smallholder dairy farms with croplands (SF), industrial landless farms (IDF), and coupled dairy cattle and cropland-intensive farms (CDF). Our findings indicate considerable differences in N flows, NUE, and losses among the systems. On average, N deposition and N fertilizer were the primary N sources for PF and SF, respectively, whereas IDF and CDF derived over 90% of their N inputs from purchased feeds. PF and SF recycled all available manure N on-farm, whereas IDF and CDF recycled only approximately 36% of the total available manure N. N losses constituted 39-72% of total N outputs, with ammonia emissions accounting for 68-73% of total N losses across all farm types. In particular, PF had a higher N loss per kilogram of dairy product than other systems. Farm-level NUE ranged from 17 to 35%, with manure management practices showing significant variability, underscoring the potential for enhanced strategies to reduce N losses through improved manure treatment. Fast and accurate anomaly detection is critical in telemetry systems because it helps operators take appropriate actions in response to abnormal behaviours. However, recent techniques are accurate but not fast enough to deal with real-time data. There is a need to reduce the anomaly detection time, which motivates us to propose two new algorithms called AnDePeD (Anomaly Detector on Periodic Data) and AnDePed Pro. The novelty of the proposed algorithms lies in exploiting the periodic nature of data in anomaly detection. Our proposed algorithms apply a variational mode decomposition technique to find and extract periodic components from the original data before using Long Short-Term Memory neural networks to detect anomalies in the remainder time series. Furthermore, our methods include advanced techniques to eliminate prediction errors and automatically tune operational parameters. Extensive numerical results show that the proposed algorithms achieve comparable performance in terms of Precision, Recall, F-score, and MCC metrics while outperforming most of the state-of-the-art anomaly detection approaches in terms of initialisation delay and detection delay, which is favourable for practical applications. Mycorrhizal fungi, which form symbiotic associations with plant roots, can be critical to the successful establishment of plants. Up to 90% of land plant species form associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which develop fungal structures inside host roots. Common site preparation practices prior to ecological restoration, such as soil disturbance and herbicide application, may lessen the availability of AMF, potentially jeopardising plant establishment. However, the state of the soil microbiome can be difficult to assess directly. This study examines the potential of the widespread pasture grass Anthoxanthum odoratum (Sweet Vernal, Poaceae) as a bioassay of AMF abundance in soils. We present a rapid clearing and staining protocol for visualising AMF structures in the roots of A. odoratum. We then compare % colonisation on roots of naturally established A. odoratum plants collected from undisturbed pastures vs. sprayed and tilled pastures. Roots of A. odoratum collected from sprayed and tilled pastures showed a significantly lower average AMF colonisation at 43.8% compared with 57.6% on roots from undisturbed pastures. However, all plants sourced from the sprayed and tilled pastures still showed some AMF structures. Our results strongly suggest that A. odoratum can be a useful bioindicator of AMF presence and abundance in soils, offering a promising tool for seed-based restoration on retired agricultural land. This study evaluated the responses of sweet potatoes to Cadmium (Cd) stress through pot experiments to theoretically substantiate their comprehensive applications in Cd-polluted agricultural land. The experiments included a CK treatment and three Cd stress treatments with 3, 30, and 150 mg/kg concentrations, respectively. We analyzed specified indicators of sweet potato at different growth periods, such as the individual plant growth, photosynthesis, antioxidant capacity, and carbohydrate Cd accumulation distribution. On this basis, the characteristics of the plant carbon metabolism in response to Cd stress throughout the growth cycle were explored. The results showed that T2 and T3 treatments inhibited the vine growth, leaf area expansion, stem diameter elongation, and tuberous root growth of sweet potato; notably, T3 treatment significantly increased the number of sweet potato branches. Under Cd stress, the synthesis of chlorophyll in sweet potato was significantly suppressed, and the Rubisco activity experienced significant reductions. With the increasing Cd concentration, the function of PS II was also affected. The soluble sugar content underwent no significant change in low Cd concentration treatments. In contrast, it decreased significantly under high Cd concentrations. Additionally, the tuberous root starch content decreased significantly with the increase in Cd concentration. Throughout the plant growth, the activity levels of catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase increased significantly in T2 and T3 treatments. By comparison, the superoxide dismutase activity in T1 treatment was significantly lower than that of CK. With the increasing application of Cd, its accumulation accordingly increased in various sweet potato organs. The the highest bioconcentration factor was detected in absorbing roots, while the tuberous roots had a lower bioconcentration factor and Cd accumulation. Moreover, the transfer factor from stem to petiole was the highest of the potato organs. These results demonstrated that sweet potatoes had a high Cd tolerance and a restoration potential for Cd-contaminated farmland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and the essential foods for Nigerians are cereal crops, including maize, rice, sorghum, millet, and wheat. However, their productivity is significantly affected by population pressure, poor cropland utilization, and high fertilizer costs. Against this backdrop, this study examines the relationship between cereal production, cereal cropland area, fertilizer usage, and the rural population (farm labor). The study utilizes the novel dynamic autoregressive distributed lag simulation (DYARDLS) model and analyzes annual time series data for Nigeria from 1980 to 2021. The unit root test results suggest that the chosen variables are stationary. Furthermore, the bound test affirms that all variables are cointegrated, with a significance level of 1%. The results from the DYARDLS show that in the long run, a percentage change in rural population and cereal cropland area boosts cereal food production by 0.018% and 0.51%, respectively. Meanwhile, a 1% change in the food production index exacerbates cereal output by 0.25% in the long run and 1.06% in the short run. We also find that fertilizer consumption could improve cereal production in the short and long run, but the results are insignificant. In conclusion, we demonstrate that our study variables are the decisive determining factors of cereal productivity and cannot be disregarded in the mission to attain food security. Intensive agricultural land use negatively impacts biodiversity, including arthropod predator diversity and their pest control potential. Alley‐cropping agroforestry systems (integration of tree rows into arable land) are increasingly considered an economically viable alternative for more sustainable and biodiversity‐friendly agriculture. However, their effectiveness in promoting generalist predator diversity and pest control, especially as a function of space (distance from tree rows) and time (across the growing season) remains poorly understood. We assessed how spider abundance, taxonomic and functional diversity (as proxies of pest control potential) respond to temperate alley‐cropping agroforestry systems as compared to open croplands. Additionally, we analysed whether spiders with different habitat preferences (eurytopic, forest and open‐habitat specialists) show distinct responses. Lastly, we analysed whether the influence of agroforestry changes with decreasing tree proximity and across the growing season. Tree row proximity generally benefited the abundance, as well as taxonomic and functional diversity of the overall spider communities. Alley‐cropping promoted the abundance and taxonomic diversity of forest specialists and eurytopic spiders, without negatively affecting open‐habitat specialists. The positive effect of alley cropping was strongest within tree rows and their immediate vicinity, but was still detectable at considerably farther distances. These patterns were temporally dynamic with spider abundance and taxonomic diversity being highest within tree rows in early spring and spiders spilling over to adjacent crop rows in subsequent periods. Synthesis and applications: Overall, our findings highlight that the inclusion of tree rows benefited spiders across the entirety of the 48 m crop rows, independent of crop type. Since the peak in spider abundance and taxonomic diversity in crop rows coincided with crop pest arrival, alley‐cropping agroforestry is expected to benefit agricultural production through increased pest control potential. Background: The projection of prana to soil, seeds and seedlings to enhance plant growth is referred to as Pranic Agriculture (PA). Methods: A field study was carried out to study the influence of PA on Banana var. (Musa sps. var. Nanjangud rasabale) growth for a duration of one year. Banana suckers and agricultural land were divided into two groups namely pranic and control in half acre. The land and suckers were treated with PA and were referred to as the pranic group, while non-pranic were referred to as the control group. Growth parameters (shoot length, shoot diameter, number of leaves, leaf length and leaf diameter) were evaluated on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th months and statistically analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA. Fruit morphology and days to flowering were analyzed using a t-test. Result: For pranic group, shoot diameter (F= 9.407, p= 0.001), leaf length (F= 7.082, p= 0.003) and leaf diameter (F= 11.459, p= .000), flowering days (t= 3.39, P=.002), fruit characteristics like fruit bunch weight (t= 8.81, p= .000), total number of fruits in bunch (t= 9.20, p= .000), fruits weight (t= 7.48, p= .000), fruit length (t= 7.94, p= .000) enhanced considerably and the results were all significant when compared to control. Further studies are needed to find out the mechanism for the improved growth in the pranic group. This study will help the farmers to get higher yields and more income by using pranic agriculture. Farm succession can be a challenge for continuity, often leading to abandonment in the absence of a successor. This study investigates the relationship between farm abandonment and succession based on 46 qualitative interviews with agricultural advisors from three German regions. The aim is to uncover the reasons for abandonment, changes in farm management and associated consequences, providing insights into the phenomenon of farm abandonment. The analysis findings contribute to the understanding of the implications for farms and rural areas. This provides valuable insights into identifying effective strategies for maintaining the sustainability of the farming sector and preserving the attractiveness of rural areas. Biosecurity measures, coupled with effective on-farm management, encompass all aspects aimed at preventing the entry of pathogens into pig farms and their subsequent spread within the facility. This study assessed biosecurity practices on commercial pig farms in Serbia by surveying farm veterinarians/managers. To evaluate biosecurity on these farms, a Biocheck online survey (https://biocheckgent.com) was conducted across ten commercial pig farms in Northern Serbia, where the highest concentration of industrial pig production occurs. The average overall biosecurity score was 65.56 ±11.65. External biosecurity scored higher (75.56 ±9.39), whereas internal biosecurity scored lower (54.89 ±16.92). Within external biosecurity, the weakest scores were observed in categories such as feed, water, and equipment supply (47 ±25.48), showing considerable variation among farms, particularly in feed, water, equipment supply (54.22), and farm location (57.65). Regarding internal biosecurity, the lowest scores were noted during the farrowing and suckling period (37.22 ±15.08) and the finishing unit (37.66 ±24.12). This study reveals that biosecurity measures in commercial pig farms in Serbia are slightly below the global average. Given the predominance of extensive production systems in Serbia, urgent improvements in biosecurity practices on industrial farms are essential. The dual pressures of climate change and population growth have made the development of new grains a necessity. Agriophyllum squarrosum (sand rice) has high adaptability to harsh environments and does not occupy agricultural land. It is widely cultivated and consumed in Central Asia. Sand rice, together with quinoa and buckwheat, belongs to the same pseudocereals group with rich nutritional value and gluten‐free properties; however, its nutritional composition and health benefits differ from those of quinoa and buckwheat. Sand rice seeds are a rich source of nutrients and bioactive compounds, including proteins, amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, and crude fiber, which are similar to those in buckwheat and quinoa; however, their starch content is relatively low. Sand rice seeds also possess phenolic acids and flavonoids, which exhibit antioxidant, anticancer, anti‐diabetes, and anti‐inflammatory properties. Furthermore, sand rice extracts are considered suitable for treating some chronic diseases. Overall, sand rice is considered a good plant‐based food that can be used to develop various functional foods and beverages or mixed with other grains in different recipes. However, advancements in the processing technology of sand rice‐based foods are required to fully exploit the potential of sand rice in the food industry to improve human health. This review analyzes the current understanding of the nutritional content of sand rice by comparing it with that of quinoa and buckwheat. The prevalence of plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) in the Irish peatlands was investigated in five different peatland habitats—raised bog, cutover scrub/woodlands, fens and peat grasslands, which were further sub-categorised into fourteen different sub-habitats. Within the raised bog habitat were healthy bog hummock (HBH), healthy bog lawn (HBL), degraded bog hummock (DBH) and degraded bog lawn (DBL) and the fen habitats were fen peat (FP) and rich fen peat (R-FP). Cutover scrub or woodland habitat included cutover scrub rewetted (C-RW), cutover scrub non-rewetted (C-NRW), woodlands rewetted (W-RW) and woodlands non-rewetted (W-NRW). Grassland included wasted peat (WP), rough grazing (RG-I) and improved fen peat grassland (IFPG-RW and IFPG-NRW). Soil samples from peatlands were all collected between July and December 2023 when the temperature ranged from 12 to 20 °C. One half of each sample was used for molecular nematode analysis and the other half for morphological identification of nematodes. For the morphological identification, a specific nematode extraction protocol was optimised for peatland soils, and the extracted nematodes were fixed onto slides to be studied under a high-power light microscope. Subsequently, the other part of the soil was processed to isolate total DNA, from which the 18S rRNA gene was sequenced for the identification of nematode taxa. The extracted DNA was also used for randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting analysis to determine banding patterns that could classify different bog habitats based on PPN random primers. Compared to that in the climax habitats (HBH, HBL, DBH, DBL, FP, R-FP), PPN prevalence was recorded as being higher in grasslands (WP, RG-I, IFPG-RW and IFPG-NRW) and scrub/woodland ecosystems (C-RW, C-NRW, W-RW, W-NRW). The results indicate that nematode populations are different across the various bog habitats. Emerging and current quarantine PPN belonging to the families Pratylenchidae, Meloidogynidae, Anguinidae and Heteroderidae were noted to be above the threshold limits mentioned under EPPO guidelines, in grassland and wooded peatland habitats. Future actions for PPN management may need to be considered, along with the likelihood that these PPN might impact future paludiculture and other crops and trees growing in nearby agricultural lands. The cultivation of perennial flowering wild plant species like common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.) seems promising for increasing biodiversity friendliness in rather monotonous bioenergy cropping systems in Central Europe, particularly on marginal sites. However, it is still unclear for which types of marginal agricultural land common tansy would be suitable and where; as a result, low-risk indirect land-use change biomass production through common tansy could be considered. Therefore, the aim of this study was to gather initial insights into the suitability of common tansy for sandy sites by means of a 6 L-pot experiment. For this purpose, five replicates of three substrates were prepared: Luvisol topsoil (control) from a field site near the University of Hohenheim, Germany; and admixtures of 50 and 83.4weight(wt)% of sand to the control (M1, and M2), respectively. This resulted in varying sand contents of the substrates of 4.7 (control), 53.3 (M1), and 83.0wt% (M2). In autumn 2021, common tansy seeds were collected from mother plants bearing the breeder's indentifier 'Z.8TAV 85/78'. These plants were part of a long-term field trial initiated at Hohenheim in 2014, where common tansy was grown as part of a wild plant mixture. In June 2022, 0.5 g of the seeds were sown in each pot. The pots were placed in outdoor conditions, arranged in a randomized complete block design and watered evenly as required. At harvest in July 2023, significant differences between the substrates in terms of the above- (shoots) and belowground (roots) development of the common tansy seedlings were observed. In M1, common tansy provided notable biomass growth of 56.6% of the control, proving to be potentially suitable for low-input cultivation under sandy soil conditions. However, an even higher share of sand and low nutrient contents in M2 resulted in minor plant development (14.4% of the control). Hence, field trials on sandy soils of about 50wt% of sand in the texture under tailored fertilization and various climatic conditions are recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The modernization of pig production has led to increasingly larger populations of pigs. This dynamic allows for accelerated production and ensures a steady pork supply but also facilitates the spread of infections. PCV2 is a ubiquitous virus and can cause PCV2-associated diseases, depending on production practices. This study aimed to evaluate the conditions of pig production in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, and correlate them with PCV2. A total of 4207 serum samples from 80 farms were analyzed. Epidemiological data were collected and used to investigate factors associated with PCV2 detection. A relative frequency of approximately 30% was detected, primarily in grower pigs maintained on multisite farms. Alternative food network research has referred to farm shops but rarely examined them in detail. This article argues that farm shops are not simply places of exchange but are complex, immersive, sensory‐rich places of meaning and experience. These arguments are developed through a study that adopts an interpretive/embodied perspective on conventions and applies them through a multi‐methods approach, incorporating autoethnography, interviews, a questionnaire and website analysis. The influence of farm shop interiors and farm context were investigated through thematic analysis. It was found that consumers desired a rustic interior aesthetic, an external ambience enabling exploration and an opportunity to escape time poverty through consumption. Farm shop owners endeavoured to provide a rich multi‐sensory interactive consumption experience, encompassing both enterprise buildings and surrounding farm sites. It is argued that use of 'farm‐site' consumption experiences distinguishes these enterprises from each other, contributes to consumer immersion and positively contributes to the collective identity of 'farm shops'. This study aimed to assess the potential of soil organic carbon (SOC) production through organic amendments. SOC sequestration would help to achieve the net-zero emissions targets set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Given the urgency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, traditional methods that estimate SOC over 100 years must be revised. Hence, a novel fate transport numerical model was developed to forecast SOC levels relevant to individual countries' net-zero targets in various time frames. The simulation results revealed that most countries had sufficient organic amendment to mitigate the CO2 emission of that country for a year if the organic amendment was applied on 20% of the arable land. However, if a significant fraction of the total CO2 emissions needs to be mitigated before reaching the net zero target, the requirements of organic amendments need to be increased several folds. All the available agricultural land should also be brought under the organic amendment regime. Later, the dynamic LCA approach was undertaken for estimating Global Warming (GWP) from land-applied organic residue. It was observed that, depending on the dynamic LCA model, the estimated GWP was different. However, the estimated dynamic GWP was very close to the residual SOC calculated through the fate transport model. The mass of organic residues generated from a biorefinery was examined by employing a waste biorefinery model to explore further the routes of acquiring additional organic amendment. Simulated results showed that while a waste biorefinery could not provide additional organic residue compared to the original organic waste input, it was highly efficient for nutrient recovery and its uses. This study demonstrated that organic amendment-based carbon sequestration adequately mitigated residual GHG at the net-zero target. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
