Estimates of the land area occupied by wind energy differ by orders of magnitude due to data scarcity and inconsistent methodology. We developed a method that combines machine learning-based imagery analysis and geographic information systems and examined the land area of 318 wind farms (15,871 turbines) in the U.S. portion of the Western Interconnection. We found that prior land use and human modification in the project area are critical for land-use efficiency and land transformation of wind projects. Projects developed in areas with little human modification have a land-use efficiency of 63.8 ± 8.9 W/m2 (mean ±95% confidence interval) and a land transformation of 0.24 ± 0.07 m2/MWh, while values for projects in areas with high human modification are 447 ± 49.4 W/m2 and 0.05 ± 0.01 m2/MWh, respectively. We show that land resources for wind can be quantified consistently with our replicable method, a method that obviates >99% of the workload using machine learning. To quantify the peripheral impact of a turbine, buffered geometry can be used as a proxy for measuring land resources and metrics when a large enough impact radius is assumed (e.g., >4 times the rotor diameter). Our analysis provides a necessary first step toward regionalized impact assessment and improved comparisons of energy alternatives.

Shangshan is the earliest Neolithic culture discovered in the lower Yangtze region and is significant as one of the origins of rice agriculture worldwide. During the Early Holocene, the Shangshan human groups settled in the river basins of the upper Qiantang region and transitioned from hunter-gatherers to farmers. Little is known about the dominant factors motivating them to settle down and their occupation patterns for adapting to local environments. To address these issues, we applied an ad hoc method by coupling landform classification, geomorphic fieldwork, accessibility analysis, and flood risk assessment. The results of geomorphic and accessibility analyses show that the ancient residents preferred to occupy the edges of the Middle Pleistocene terraces along second- and third-order streams. These locations are mainly situated in the centers of river basins and have height differences of 5–15 m, less than approximately 15-min walking distance from streams, providing them with stable residential spaces and accessible water resources. Within the 10-min territorial scope, there are always some fluvial plains near the terrace edges, indicating that the plain is another critical landform utilized by the residents. The wide plains and a plain-terrace-upland geomorphic assemblage, within 1-h and 2-h scopes, respectively, imply that the residents started to develop agricultural land while they also exploited diverse environments to ensure a plentiful food supply. Furthermore, the hydrologic analysis and assessment reveal that the residents were aware of the potential flood risks: their settlements are located at 30-min walking distance or greater from the high-order streams; most sites are exposed to low flood risks, with average percentages of unflooded territory greater than 67% and 43% in the minor and large flood scenarios, respectively; and each site has sufficient arable land with areas of 5–23 km2 within a 1-h scope, even under the large flood scenario. Overall, these results reveal that the river basins provided favorable living environments, and the residents could flexibly manage the landscapes to ensure stable settlements and food production, thus enabling the appearance and development of a sedentary society and rice agriculture during the early Holocene. Soil nitrification, driven by ammonia‐oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia‐oxidizing bacteria (AOB), is a crucial process in maintaining the soil nitrogen (N) balance. However, the influence of AOA and AOB on soil gross nitrification rates (GNR) in response to vegetation restoration remains unclear, particularly in karst regions. In this study, we investigated soil GNR and the abundance, diversity, and community composition of AOA and AOB across after vegetation restoration. Four land use types were examined: plantation forest (PF), forage grass (FG), a combination of plantation forest and forage grass (FG), and cropland (CR, control). Soil ammonium N (NH4+) was higher in the vegetation restoration compared to that in cropland, whereas nitrate N (NO3−) exhibited the opposite trend. Soil GNR were reduced by 55.4%–90.3% in the vegetation restorations compared to that in cropland. The abundance, Chao1, and Shannon index of AOB were lower in vegetation restorations compared to cropland, respectively. The abundance and diversity of AOA were higher than those of AOB but were unaffected by vegetative restoration. Furthermore, AOB community is more sensitive to vegetation restoration than AOA community. Specifically, the abundance of AOB taxa belonging to the genera Nitrosospira and Nitrosovibrio was decreased by the restoration efforts. In addition, soil nutrients availability (e.g., NH4+, NO3−, and phosphorus) and AOB index (e.g., Shannon index) were the main factors driving soil GNR. This study highlights the importance of AOB in driving soil nitrification during vegetation restoration and emphasizes the necessity to optimize soil nitrogen management in karst ecosystems. While there are many global geospatial datasets representing the extent of agriculture, they predominantly represent croplands. Only a couple of global data products represent the full global agricultural footprint, including pastures. Our own research team's most recent complete publicly available agricultural land cover dataset, including both croplands and pastures, represent circa 2000. These data, distributed on a graticule of 5 arcminutes (~10 km2 at the equator), have been integrated into a considerable number and diversity of research studies, modeling, data science and media applications. Further, users of these data have been interested in them for studying a variety of issues such as land use, food security, climate change and biodiversity loss. Here we present an updated dataset on the global distribution of agricultural lands (cropland and pasture) circa 2015 (15 years on since the initial study). Past studies that have constructed such datasets have been one-off exercises that have been infrequently repeated due to the amount of effort required. Therefore, in this work, we developed a transparent and reproducible approach to update our data product while also enabling easier reproduction of future datasets. We distribute our 2015 product at the same resolution and formats as the prior product, and accompany it with a full set of replicable code and data for reconstruction. A precise and up-to-date Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) valuation serves as the fundamental basis for efficient land management. Google Earth Engine (GEE), with its numerous machine learning algorithms, is now the most advanced open-source global platform for rapid and accurate LULC classification. Thus, this study explores the dynamics of the LULC changes between 1993 and 2023 using Landsat imagery and the machine learning algorithms in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Focus group discussion and key informant interviews were also used to get further data regarding LULC dynamics. Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Classification and Regression Trees (CART) were demonstrated for LULC classification. Six LULC types (agricultural land, grazingland, shrubland, built-up area, forest and bareland) were identified and mapped for 1993, 2003, 2013, and 2023. The overall accuracy and kappa coefficient demonstrated that the RF using images comprising auxiliary variables (spectral indices and topographic data) performed better than SVM and CART. Despite being the most common type of LULC, agricultural land shows a trend of shrinking during the study period. The built-up area and bareland exhibits a trend of progressive expansion. The amount of forest and shrubland has decreased over the last 20 years, whereas grazinglands have exhibited expanding trends. Population growth, agricultural land expansion, fuelwood collection, charcoal production, built-up areas expansion, illegal settlement and intervention are among causes of LULC shifts. This study provides reliable information about the patterns of LULC in the Robit watershed, which can be used to develop frameworks for watershed management and sustainability. In a national park in Northeast Thailand, agricultural land has been converted from natural forest by small-scale farmers for cassava agriculture. We hypothesise that long-termed cassava monoculture leads to the degradation of soil properties. To test the hypothesis, we conducted a five-year (2016–2020) study on the physical and chemical properties of soil in cassava farmland, and also examined the soil properties of its adjacent natural forests, as a control. The examined cassava farmland was converted from the natural forest during the five years from 2011 to 2015. The significant decrease in organic carbon and the increases in exchangeable potassium and bulk density were found in 2016, indicating that these soil properties varied quickly following the farmland conversion. On the other hand, the significant increase in soil nitrogen and the decrease in pH were found later in 2020, indicating that these soil properties were gradually altered by repeated agricultural activities, such as fertilizer application and trampling. In contrast, there were no significant differences in available phosphate, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, and the soil texture (the fractions of sand, silt, and clay) among the forest and farmland soils. The cation exchange capacity was positively correlated to the fraction of clay, the organic carbon, and pH. The use of glyphosate and paraquat herbicides is prohibited within national parks in Thailand. However, in 2020, glyphosate was detected in farmland soil (up to 5.0 mg kg-1) during both the rainy and dry seasons, and glyphosate (up to 2.5 mg l-1) was detected in stream water from the farmland during the dry season at least in 2020. Soil degradation and herbicide pollution may carry a high risk of causing irreversible changes in terrestrial ecosystems. We discuss the root causes of this issue from perspectives of agricultural production, economy, and the environmental impact, and propose effective policy measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerical modeling of the recovery of moisture by injecting warm air in the unsaturated zone in a 100 m × 100 m plot of agricultural land in Kuwait, a country located in an arid environment, was conducted to provide “proof of concept” of the technique. If technically and economically feasible, it will be a potential additional source of water that could be exploited for farming activities and other uses. The COMSOL software was used to develop the model and, based on the results of the scenario runs, the effects of different hydraulic and operational parameters, including that of well spacing, on moisture recovery were assessed. In general, the results suggested that the recovery should increase with the increase in the hydraulic conductivity of the unsaturated zone, the amount of heat input, and the pressure differential between the unsaturated zone and the well head. Within the period examined (0 to 11 days), the recovery decreases with the increase in the soil moisture content, possibly due to the fall in relative permeability to moisture‐rich air with the increased water contents in the pore spaces, although the effects may change over a longer period as water contents decrease with moisture recovery. The moisture recovery from the unsaturated zone through the injection of warm air appears to be a feasible proposition from this study that should be demonstrated through a pilot scale experiment in the field. [Objective] The aims of this study are to explore the response of ecosystem service value (ESV) to land use change, and to improve the sustainability of ecosystem service function in central Guizhou. [Methods] In this study, urban agglomeration of central Guizhou was taken as an example. Statistical analysis and spatial autocorrelation method were used to assess the land use change and ESV spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of urban agglomeration of central Guizhou from 2000 to 2020, and the spatial pattern of land use and its ESV change under different development scenarios in 2030 was predicted by coupling with PLUS model. [Results] (1) The land use change in the study area from 2000 to 2020 was mainly manifested in the transformation of cropland and grassland to construction land and waters, and affected by the land use change, the ESV of the study area increased by 11.28 hundred million yuan from 2000 to 2020, showing a fluctuating upward trend, and the expansion of waters and construction land area was the main reason for the change of ESV in the study area. (2) The decrease area of ESV from 2000 to 2020 was mainly distributed in the center urban area with better economic development, and the increase area was mainly distributed near rivers, lakes and other waters. The spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that the high and low agglomeration areas in the study area were widely distributed and strongly clustered, with the high and high agglomeration areas mainly concentrated in the northwestern part of the study area and the low and low agglomeration areas mainly concentrated in the central part of the study area. (3) The ESV under the nature scenario, cropland protection and ecological protection scenarios in 2030 are 710.22 hundred million, 705.33 hundred million and 720.62 hundred million yuan, respectively, and the ecological protection scenario has an obvious positive effect on the growth of ESV in the study area. [Conclusion In the future. the urban agglomeration of central Guizhou can continue to strengthen the policy of returning farmland to forests to improve the value of ecosystem services in terms of ecological environment, and it should formulate a more reasonable and comprehensive development strategy in terms of urban development, which can take into account ecological protection while the economy develops. In the last two decades, India's system of agricultural land management has been transitioning from paper to digital records. In effecting this shift, engineers and bureaucrats in the city of Bangalore, India's "Silicon Valley," have tacitly and invisibly shifted the responsibility for maintaining data from the state to individuals. Moreover, the new digital databases of land records have fragmented offices and dispersed data across new sites and actors. Under these transformed conditions, people can access services only through what I call citizen labor. That is, when digitization is applied to land and property—which are quintessential sites for the making and unmaking of citizenship—people are interpellated into laboring on their own data. This shows that the digitization of government extracts a form of labor, one whose benefits accrue to groups and organizations beyond the laboring individual. Agriculture in Poland plays an important social and environmental role. Accession to the EU resulted in structural and modernization changes, following adjustments to CAP obligations. In 2019, the European Green Deal and "From Farm to Fork" strategies called for circularity, zero emissions, and food and energy security. The purpose of this study was to assess the consumption and energy efficiency of Polish farms, identify challenges in energy management, and formulate recommendations. This study used data from Polish Statistics, FADN, and other public bodies collecting relevant data. The assessment of energy intensity was carried out based on the concept of technical efficiency by Farell and Debreu, defined as the ratio of effects to inputs. In addition, methods of comparative and descriptive statistics were used. The average annual dynamics of energy consumption and CO2 emissions were determined using the compound percentage formula. The results of this research indicate positive changes in the energy management in Polish agriculture, including a decrease in production energy intensity, CO2 emissions, and the amount of waste generated by the investments made. It is necessary to improve farm energy efficiency further and to increase the use of renewable energy to maintain cost competitiveness and meet environmental requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil freeze-thaw (FT) cycles over agricultural lands are of great importance due to their vital role in controlling soil moisture distribution, nutrient availability, health of microbial communities, and water partitioning during flood events. Active microwave sensors such as C-band Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can serve as powerful tools to detect field-scale soil FT state. Using Sentinel-1 SAR observations, this study compares the performance of two FT detection approaches, a commonly used seasonal threshold approach (STA) and a computationally inexpensive general threshold approach (GTA) at an agricultural field in New Hampshire, US. It also explores the applicability of an interferometric coherence approach (ICA) for FT detection. STA and GTA achieved 85% and 78% accuracy, respectively, using VH polarization. We find a marginal degradation in the performance of STA (82%) and GTA (76%) when employing VV-polarized data. While there was approximately a 6 percentage point difference between STA's and GTA's overall accuracy, we recommend GTA for FT detection using SAR images at sub-field-scale over extended regions because of its higher computational efficiency. Our analysis shows that interferometric coherence is not suitable for detecting FT transitions under mild and highly dynamic winter conditions. We hypothesize that the relatively mild winter conditions and therefore the subtle FT transitions are not able to significantly reduce the correlation between the phase values. Also, the ephemeral nature of snowpack in our study area, further compounded by frequent rainfall, could cause decorrelation of SAR images even in the absence of a FT transition. We conclude that despite Sentinel-1's ~80% mapping accuracy at a mid-latitude site, understanding the cause of misclassification remains challenging, even when detailed ground data are readily available and employed in error attribution efforts. Cultivated land resources have restricted the agricultural production and economic development in China, particularly with the ever-increasing urbanization and population. There are the spatiotemporal variations of cultivated land in different regions, due to the different natural and social economic conditions. However, only a few quantitative studies have been focused on the distribution of cultivated land use under various terrain and climate in the field of geography. Furthermore, the data accuracy of most studies cannot accurately reflect the spatial change of cultivated land. Taking Ngari Prefecture as the research area, the purpose of this study was to explore the spatiotemporal differentiation and distribution of cultivated land resources under different terrain and climate. Farmland data was collected in 2005, 2013 and 2020. Google Earth highresolution imagery was then utilized to visually interpret with a resolution of 0.49-8.26 m. Kernel density estimation, spatial and buffer analysis functions in ArcGIS software were also used to identify the spatiotemporal differentiation and influencing factors of farmland. The results showed that: 1) In terms of spatial change, the scattered and fragmented cultivated land was more concentrated in the valleys of the southwestern part of Pulan County and the central part of Zada County. The small patches were dominated in the cultivated land. The cultivated land was also more concentrated in Pulan Township of Pulan County, Xiangzi Township of Zada County, Shiquanhe Town of Gar County and Ritu Town of Ritu County, compared with different townships. Meanwhile, the cultivated land was distributed mainly in the spatial area with an altitude of 3500-4500 m, a slope of 0-6°, a slope to the southwest, an average annual precipitation of 0-25 mm, an average annual temperature of 0-5°C, and a distance of less than 200 m from roads and rivers. 2) In terms of temporal change, the cultivated area was aggregated in a multiregional manner from 2005 to 2020, indicating a general trend of growth. The reason was attributed to the influence from the geographic location, natural environment, population increase, non-agriculturalization, and market demand. Specifically, the cultivated land area of Zada and Pulan counties in the south increased slowly or even declined, while there was the significant increase in the Gaer and Ritu counties in the north. 3) The cultivated land area was continued to expand in the future, in order to meet the demand of market and employment. There was the smaller increase in the south, together with the small decrease. An outstanding increase was found in the north. Therefore, the mechanization, the output value per unit area and the high-quality agriculture should be improved to focus on the environmental carrying capacity of regional arable land, soil quality and sustainability. In general, the farmland was also dominated by the location and hydrothermal conditions, particularly the influence from the population, non-agricultural development and market demand. The distribution and area changes of farmland were greatly varied in different regions. This finding can also provide a strong reference for the current status of land use, agricultural land planning and sustainable development of cultivated land in Ngari Prefecture. The Fast Track Land Reform Programme (FTLRP) of 2000 redistributed land previously owned by White farmers to the majority Black Zimbabweans. In understanding the dynamics of land ownership, various studies have been conducted, and these highlight autochthonous claims to land based on attachment to graves and ancestral sites and contestations around them. However, non-ancestral claims to belonging have received limited attention. This article examines tensions between two groups of A1 villagised farms using empirical qualitative data from a case study in Bubi District. We investigated 2 acute cases and 1 previous case of Seoul hantavirus infection in workers in a feeder rodent breeding farm in Taiwan. Prevalence of hantavirus IgG among the tested feeder rats was 37.5%. The UK sixth carbon budget has recommended domestic biomass supply should increase to meet growing demand, planting a minimum of 30,000 hectares of perennial energy crops a year by 2035, with a view to establishing 700,000 hectares by 2050 to meet the requirements of the balanced net zero pathway. Miscanthus is a key biomass crop to scale up domestic biomass production in the United Kingdom. A cohesive land management strategy, based on robust evidence, will be required to ensure upscaling of miscanthus cultivation maximizes the environmental and economic benefits and minimizes undesirable consequences. This review examines research into available land areas, environmental impacts, barriers to uptake, and the challenges, benefits, and trade‐offs required to upscale miscanthus production on arable land and grassland in the United Kingdom. Expansion of perennial biomass crops has been considered best restricted to marginal land, less suited to food production. The review identifies a trade‐off between avoiding competition with food production and a risk of encroaching on areas containing high‐biodiversity or high‐carbon stocks, such as semi‐natural grasslands. If areas of land suitable for food production are needed to produce the biomass required for emission reduction, the review indicates there are multiple strategies for miscanthus to complement long‐term food security rather than compete with it. On arable land, a miscanthus rotation with a cycle length of 10–20 years can be employed as fallow period for fields experiencing yield decline, soil fatigue, or persistent weed problems. On improved grassland areas, miscanthus presents an option for diversification, flood mitigation, and water quality improvement. Strategies need to be developed to integrate miscanthus into farming systems in a way that is profitable, sensitive to local demand, climate, and geography, and complements rather than competes with food production by increasing overall farm profitability and resilience. Rice–wheat rotation cropland is one of the most important agroecosystems in South China, the escalation of conflict between food demand augment and water supply shortage increased with climate change. Water use efficiency plays a more significant role in optimising water and carbon management. Thus, the diurnal and seasonal variations of water use efficiency were assessed by the 3‐year eddy covariance observations in the Shouxian National Observatory, a typical rice–wheat rotation station. The results revealed a 'U'‐shaped diurnal pattern of water use efficiency for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.). Seasonal water use efficiency had two peaks with the highest in the winter wheat‐growing season. The average water use efficiency for the rice–wheat rotation cropland was 2.85 g C kg−1 H2O over the whole year with 2.62 and 3.11 g C kg−1 H2O for winter wheat and rice, respectively. However, gross primary productivity and evapotranspiration of rice were higher than those of winter wheat. Temperature, photosynthetically active radiation were the principal impact factors of water use efficiency in the rice‐growing season. Comparatively, soil water and vapour pressure deficit dominated the water use efficiency changes in the winter wheat‐growing season. Antimicrobial use (AMU) in Switzerland is above target and requires reduction, especially in dairy cattle. Measuring AMU is pivotal to identifying starting points for AMU reduction, and so are studies investigating its potential drivers in dairy farms worldwide. However, although AMU in dairy farms is high, studies estimating AMU specifically in tiestall farms are scarce. Tiestalls are a common housing system and their prevalence among dairy farms accounts to approximatively 73%, 41%, and 40% in Canada, the United States, and Switzerland, respectively. The objectives of this cross-sectional, retrospective observational study were to estimate AMU using the newly established Swiss national reporting system for AMU in livestock and to identify associated factors on Swiss tiestall dairy farms. We calculated the treatment incidence (TI) by using the European Medicines Agency methodology and their defined daily dose (DDD) and defined course dose (DCD) standards. Data on factors potentially associated with AMU were obtained through personal interviews with farm managers on 221 farms. Retrospectively, during a 1-year period, data on a total of 7,619 treatments were extracted from the national database. Associations between management factors and TI were analyzed using a generalized linear model with gamma distribution. The mean (± SD) overall TI was 5.46 DDD/cow-year (± 4.10 DDD/cow-year). Intramammary treatment during lactation accounted for highest TI (3.24 ± 3.16 DDD/cow-year), whereas dry-cow therapy accounted for lowest TI (0.44 ± 0.49 DCD/cow-year). We found that 5 of the investigated management factors were significantly associated with TI. Organic production (estimate = −2.16; 95% CI = −3.62 to −0.70) and herd size (estimate = −0.81; 95% CI = −1.23 to −0.39) were negatively associated with TI. Specific cow breeds (Brown Swiss estimate = 1.56; 95% CI = 0.45–2.68) and Holstein Friesian (estimate = 1.42; 95% CI = 0.03–2.82; reference: other breeds) and the use of hygienic powders on the lying area (estimate = 1.10; 95% CI = 0.04–2.17) were positively associated with TI. Overall, the Swiss national reporting system is a valuable tool for AMU estimation. Several herd characteristics and management factors were associated with AMU in tiestall farms. Further studies focusing on factors associated with AMU and which are amenable to intervention will help improve stewardship programs and subsequently reduce AMU in dairy cows. Assessing Leaf Area Index (LAI) is one of the key indicators to study and understand cropland's productivity. To this end, Sentinel-2 (S2) ideally serves to monitor LAI given its high spatial and temporal resolution. Thanks to the cloud computing prowess of the revolutionary Google Earth Engine (GEE), assessing the temporal changes in LAI over a large area can be achieved quickly, making crop health monitoring in near real-time plausible. To achieve this, this work has integrated the Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) algorithm and the PROSAIL model into GEE to map LAI values for the crops being cultivated accurately. The Automated Radiative Transfer Mode Operator (ARTMO) software generated PROSAIL simulation spectra. The GPR model was trained using the PROSAIL simulation spectra and optimized through the Euclidean distance-Based Diversity (EBD) Active Learning (AL) method. The final GPR model was validated against in-situ data collected on 23rd February, 2023 from the research farms of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, India. Through ARTMO, the validated GPR model produced an estimated LAI map over croplands managed by IARI, with an accuracy of 0.688 R2 value, and these LAI values and a precision of 0.96 R2 were observed between the LAI values observed in the ARTMO LAI map and the GEE-generated map. This model was then run into GEE to study the temporal changes in LAI values for Mustard, Chickpea, and Wheat, three prominent crops for the Rabi season. These temporal LAI patterns can assist in understanding the cropland's phenological changes. Thanks to GEE, crop phenology monitoring can be efficiently realized using temporal LAI estimates. Amphibians are not only an alternative source of vital protein for humans, but also one of the best bioindicators for ecological studies. In this study, we studied the age structure, body size, and mass of an amphibian species (Pelophylax ridibundus) by sampling from two different frog farms in Türkiye. The age ranged from 4 to 13 (mean: 7.1) years in the Adana site while the age varied from 1 to 12 (mean: 5.2) years in the İstanbul site. Body size ranged between 88.21 and 103.72 mm (mean: 94.99 ± 1.15 mm) in the Adana site and 45.96 and 103.25 mm (mean: 75.90 ± 3.01 mm) in the İstanbul site. The t-test confirmed that the average age, SVL, and weight of the Adana site were higher than those of İstanbul. Body size markedly increased with age and weight (SVL-age: r = 0.659, p < 0.01; SVL-weight: r = 0.877, p < 0.001) in the İstanbul site, while in the Adana site, body size correlated only with weight. In conclusion, our research uses skeletochronology to provide demographic characteristics of marsh frogs from two unexplored frog farms located in the west and south of Türkiye. The aim of the present study was to monitor the dynamics and to measure the safety and efficacy of a live, attenuated, thermosensitive Mycoplasma anserisalpingitidis vaccine candidate, namely MA271, in geese breeder flocks under field conditions. Two rearing flocks were vaccinated with MA271 at 4 weeks of age and boosted at 24 weeks of age by cloaca inoculation (1 ml) and eye-dropping (60 µl). The geese then were transported to multi-aged breeding farms. Two breeding flocks served as controls. Colonization of the cloaca by MA271 showed 75% maximum prevalence between 4 and 6 weeks after the first vaccination. Then the prevalence decreased to 25% until the cooler, humid fall months which coincided with the booster vaccination. Boosting raised cloacal colonization to 100%. No clinical signs were observed in the vaccinated birds. After transportation to five multi-aged breeding farms, the wild-type strain appeared as well as MA271 in three flocks. In one flock, the wild-type strain completely displaced MA271, while in one flock only MA271 was detected. Only wild-type strains were detected in the control flocks; however, due to an HPAI outbreak, both flocks were exterminated before the end of the study. Based on the available data, the median percentage of infertile eggs was 3.7-5.1% in the MA271 vaccinated flocks, and 7.7% in the non-vaccinated flock. In conclusion, MA271 can colonize the cloaca of geese under field conditions. MA271 proved to be safe and presumably protects against M. anserisalpingitidis-induced reproduction losses. This paper assesses the value of agroecological farm schools by analyzing 4 Senegalese cases. Pedagogical quality is measured by: (1) feedback from former learners, (2) acquisition of fundamental knowledge, and (3) professionalization. Beyond globally positive opinions about training, our results show that farm schools display distinct performances. Developing a systemic perspective is not an easy task, but having trainers with more advanced agroecological expertise is an asset. Effective training builds on active pedagogy. Post-training business establishment is facilitated when farm schools create networks in agroecology and/or offer a consequent starter kit. The international food trade is beneficial for enhancing global food security but also raises issues such as global cropland redistribution, land use efficiency, and environmental problems. While current studies have examined the impacts of the international food trade on these issues, its long-term effects on global cropland use efficiency remain unclear, especially when considering different crops and countries. Utilizing the international trade theory and the principle of virtual cropland, this study explores the relationship between international food trade and global cropland use efficiency from 2000 to 2022. The results illustrate that the global crop trade surged by 142%, outpacing the 102% increase in virtual cropland trade, which was attributed to crop yield enhancements. By 2022, the global virtual cropland trade encompassed 10.7% of the total croplands, with China emerging as the foremost importer, particularly due to soybean imports. Notably, the global crop trade led to substantial cropland savings and higher cropland use efficiency, totaling 1244.9 million hectares (Mha) between 2000 and 2020. These gains were largely attributed to the superior yields of major crop-exporting countries. Despite these gains, socio-economically vulnerable countries face significant challenges, potentially compromising their food security amidst the complexities of the global trade dynamics. This paper offers an insight on present status of on-farm conservation of landrace diversity in the European Union. The review initially examines the types of materials that are the object of on-farm conservation, assesses the current status of maintenance and reproduction within farms and gardens, explores the motivations that drive ongoing conservation efforts as a foundation for future enhancement and identifies the key actors involved and their respective roles. Secondarily, it reviews European Union policies and their provisions supporting the conservation of crop diversity in the fields, with a particular focus on regulations pertaining to the commercialization of landrace seeds. Given that the availability of propagation material remains a primary constraint to the widespread dissemination of landraces, the review also includes current achievements and identifies constraints that could be mitigated. The discussion highlights how to continue and intensify the development and implementation of agro-environmental and seed policies as well as how further collection, documentation, study and promotion of the traditional farmers' knowledge ̶ associated with the development, production and utilization of the traditional local products ̶ can improve the present situation. Barshore is a small village in the Pishin District, Balochistan, Pakistan, with dry summers and cold rainy winters. This is an agrarian region, mostly with orchards of various fruit trees. This study investigated the physico-chemical properties and macrofauna of soils under various agricultural management practices of this region. The concentrations of soil organic matter (SOM), soil organic carbon (SOC), nutrients, pH, electrical conductivity, soil texture, and the abundance and number of species of soil macrofauna of the agricultural fields were measured. Fifteen agricultural fields were sampled. Fourteen fields were orchards of apple, apricot or the mixture of apple and apricot trees and one field was a cropland, cultivated with wheat as a monocrop. The orchards were under conservation agricultural practices; whereas, the cropland was under conventional management. These agricultural lands were 2–26 years old. The concentration of soil organic matter (SOM) in the upper 0–10 cm depth of these field sites ranged from 11.6 g kg−1 to 32.8 g kg−1 soil. As compared to cropland, orchards had significantly higher concentration of SOM and SOC. A total of 18 soil macrofauna species were found and the most common and abundant were ants (Monomorium minimum, Camponotus pennsylvanicus, Solenopsis invicta, and Lasius niger) followed by Arion ssp. (Brown Slug) and earthworm Lumbricus terrestris. Regression analysis revealed non-significant relationship of the age and the concentration of SOM with the number of macrofauna species and with the concentrations of total mineral nitrogen, bioavailable phosphorus and clay. The existence of ants had no relationship with the concentration of SOM; whereas, existence of Lumbricus terrestris tended to had a positive relationship with the concentration of SOM. The field of tree-based intercropping system was 2 years of age since the land was converted from rangeland to a cropland, had two ant species coexisting. In recent decades, the spatio-temporal patterns of China's croplands have been reshaped by disturbances from anthropogenic activities, with complex changes in the topographic characteristics of croplands. Slope-climbing of croplands (SCCL) is an important issue that threatens sustainable agricultural development. While providing land with prominent location advantages, SCCL weakens the water and fertilizer retention capacity for cropland, intensifies various geological disasters, and adversely affects the ecological environment and food yield of these croplands. It is crucial to determine the spatiotemporal variation features and effects of SCCL in China to formulate more accurate cropland protection policies and to maintain food security; however, the current lack of relevant studies is detrimental for capturing trends in cropland resources and sustainable cropland use. In this study, we constructed a multi-scale slope spectrum for cropland and total terrain to explore the spatial differences and trends of SCCL from a three-dimensional view. We evaluated the natural and socioeconomic effects of SCCL in China from multiple perspectives. Results indicate that the proportion of cropland with slopes below 2°, 5°, and 6° in China decreased by 0.43%, 0.47%, and 0.50% from 1980 to 2020, respectively. SCCL became apparent during 1980–1990 and 2010–2020, especially over the recent decade. The cropland climbing index (CCI) and upper limited slope change (ULSC) to measure the spatio-temporal pattern of SCCL were 0.99% and 1.17°, respectively, during 2010–2020. At the agricultural regional scale, the SCCL was also concentrated in 1980–1990 and 2010–2020, and it is more pronounced in the southern areas. The proportion of provinces and prefecture-level cities with high-intensity SCCL during 1980–2020 were 87.10% and 49.73%, respectively. SCCL was comparatively more pronounced and broader from 2010 to 2020. During this period, 17.84% of prefecture-level cities had no SCCL, and the average CCI for all prefecture-level cities peaked at 1.62%. In this study, we also evaluated the pros and cons of SCCL and provided targeted suggestions for decision makers and farmers to refine cropland protection policy systems and further develop the sustainable use of croplands. Purpose: Iron deficiency in soils worldwide affects the growth and development of edible crops, exacerbated in agricultural lands with little or no sustainable management. In the last decade, interest has been shown in using nanoparticles (NPs) as nanofertilizers or biostimulants to promote morphological and biochemical parameters in Fabaceae-family crops and various edible crops. Methods: The effect of Fe NPs (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) as soil-applied biostimulants was investigated on growth parameters and mineral uptake in roots, stems, and leaves of escumite bean (Phaseolus acutifolious A. Gray). The concentrations used were 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg Fe NPs kg−1 dry soil and a control treatment (no Fe NPs). Results: The results showed that low concentrations of Fe NPs (100, 200, and 300 mg kg−1) as biostimulants improved plant growth, and fresh and dry biomass of stems and leaves. In contrast, high concentrations (400 mg kg−1) of Fe NPs decreased most of the parameters evaluated. Moreover, Fe NPs promoted the uptake of P, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn in roots. Conclusions: The application to the soil at low concentrations of Fe NPs (100, 200, and 300 mg kg−1) are effective in stimulating plant growth of beans and can be used to promote nutrient uptake from the soil to the roots and leaves. Although it is the first work that is tested in escumite bean plants, it is necessary to continue with the research work, specifically in the field, to evaluate physicochemical parameters, yield, and quality of the grain. Pollarding in agroforestry systems was traditionally an important practice for fodder acquisition in Western Norway, as well as in many other parts of the world. The practice has long been in decline, but to maintain cultural landscapes and biodiversity enhancement from pollarding, farmers now receive a public grant for each tree they pollard. In this interdisciplinary study we investigate which ecosystem services modern pollarding practices provide, under the influence of the current pollarding policy. We have performed both in-depth interviews and a quantitative survey targeting all pollarding farmers in the county of Vestland in Western Norway. We find that bioresources obtained from the branches from pollarding are to some extent still taken into use, mainly in the form of tree fodder for farm animals and firewood, but a lot of the branches remain unused. Biodiversity benefits are obtained from preserving old trees that often are located on agricultural land as solitary trees, as these trees provide important habitats, particularly for species growing on the bark, such as lichens and mosses, or within the decaying wood, such as, for example, fungi and insects. The modern practice of letting branches rot in the field provide habitats for insects and hence additional benefits to biodiversity. For the farmers, the main motivations to pollard are the cultural, aesthetic and historical values of pollarded trees. They see few disadvantages with pollarding, and most of them plan to continue in the future. The grant provides an incentive for pollarding, but our results indicate that the practice would continue without it, although less than now, especially with the establishment of new pollards. Purpose: Despite the enormous need to succeed in the urban model, scientists and policymakers should work consistently to create blueprints to regulate urbanization. The absence of coordination between the crucial requirements and the regional strategies of the local authorities leads to a lack of conformance in urban development. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue. Design/methodology/approach: This study intends to manage future urban growth patterns using integrated methods and then employ the results in the genetic algorithm (GA) model to considerably improve growth behavior. Multi-temporal land-use datasets have been derived from remotely sensed images for the years 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020. Urban growth patterns and processes were then analyzed with land-use-and-land-cover dynamics. Results were examined for simulation and utilization of the GA. Findings: Model parameters were derived and evaluated, and a preliminary assessment of the effective coefficient in the formation of urbanization is analyzed, showing the city's urbanization pattern has followed along with the transportation infrastructure and outward growth, and the scattering rates are high, with an increase of 5.64% in building area associated with a decrease in agricultural lands and rangelands. Originality/value: The research achieved a considerable improvement over the growth behavior. The conducted research design was the first of its type in that field to be executed to any specific growth pattern parameters in terms of regulating and policymaking. The method has integrated various artificial intelligence models to monitor, measure and optimize the projected growth by applying this design. The importance of soil management has been recognized internationally. In Japan, the interest in soil management has recently been increasing as the compost input into agricultural land has been decreasing. Owing to recent increases in chemical fertilizer prices, increased production costs in agriculture have become a challenge. Furthermore, the current strategy of the Japanese and European Commission for Sustainable Food Systems is to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. From this perspective, there are considerable expectations for soil management and fertilizer reduction using organic matter. This review focuses on cover crops for soil management and for green manuring, an organic material that is advantageous in terms of transportation costs and the application of labor. First, the results of scientific research on the function of cover crops in improving the soil environment in the surface layer (organic matter accumulation, erosion control, and improvement of soil biological properties) and in the subsurface soil layer (physical properties) are reviewed. Next, the mechanisms of cover crops in supplying nutrients (nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus) to cash crops as green manure are reviewed. Finally, I reviewed the ways in which the benefit of cover crops can be enhanced (species selection, growth stage of incorporation, and methods and timings of seeding the following crops). Because the effects of the introduction of cover crops on soil quality and cash crop production have been indicated quantitatively, the use of cover crops is expected to expand and contribute to reducing chemical fertilizer use and improving soil quality in the future. Alternative food network research has referred to farm shops but rarely examined them in detail. This article argues that farm shops are not simply places of exchange but are complex, immersive, sensory‐rich places of meaning and experience. These arguments are developed through a study that adopts an interpretive/embodied perspective on conventions and applies them through a multi‐methods approach, incorporating autoethnography, interviews, a questionnaire and website analysis. The influence of farm shop interiors and farm context were investigated through thematic analysis. It was found that consumers desired a rustic interior aesthetic, an external ambience enabling exploration and an opportunity to escape time poverty through consumption. Farm shop owners endeavoured to provide a rich multi‐sensory interactive consumption experience, encompassing both enterprise buildings and surrounding farm sites. It is argued that use of ‘farm‐site’ consumption experiences distinguishes these enterprises from each other, contributes to consumer immersion and positively contributes to the collective identity of ‘farm shops’. In 2007/2008, a triple crisis of food, fuel and finance sparked a global rush for agricultural land; tens of millions of hectares were acquired, primarily by foreign investors, within countries in the Global South. Amidst those transactions, intergovernmental organizations, national governments, investors, and community members envisioned what "success" of such investments entails. Although not explicitly defined, each stakeholder had different conceptualizations and measures of it, based upon the descriptions used and desired outcomes sought. Despite a large amount of literature analyzing the global rush for land, as far as we are aware no one has analyzed the diverse viewpoints about what success entails. This paper compares conceptualizations among four key stakeholder groups, based on ideal types from dominant narratives, and develops a typology of ideal stakeholder framing of success to allow comparisons of uses and thereby provide a foundation for researchers who are assessing the global land rush. This paper provides clarity about widely used, but inconsistently defined, framing providing an important foundation for clarity of meaning and comparative differences between stakeholders. Introduction: Jordan suffers from agricultural land degradation, water scarcity, increasing in population, and the huge gap between production and consumption. Boosting of food production to meet the demand is one of the solutions. Biofertilizers are substances include beneficial microorganisms (e.g., bacteria) that are important in agricultural soil to improve yield through different mechanisms. The aim of this experiment is to study the impact of using locally produced-microorganisms along with chemical fertilizers to improve the yield of cucumber planting. Methods: The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse equipped with all requirements for planting. The planting process of cucumber seedling was implemented using pots filled with soil collected from an agricultural land in the Jordan Valley, and mixed with manure, and categorized in three plots. Mixture of three types of microorganisms (STIMULANT A and B, and PHYTOEM) along with chemical fertilizers were applied to the soil in some pots. Plants growth and agricultural parameters were observed. Data about crop yield, water consumption, leaf area, and chlorophyll were collected. Lab analysis of soil characteristics was also done to assess the impact of the products on soil. Results: The results showed that the yield production was the maximum in the plot of combining the benefits of biological and the chemical fertilizers compared to the control plot by 48%. The same plot showed water saving with 32.4% over the control plot. The bacterial biofertilizers enhanced the seedling growth all the time during the experiment by 14% more than the plants in the control plot. The average leaves area in plot with bio-products was 22.6% bigger than the control plot. In addition, the chlorophyll test indicated that the chlorophyll content was more in plot with biofertilizers. According to the soil analysis, the presence of bacterial biofertilizers enhanced the plant’s absorption of nutrients, and accordingly the EC decreased in the soil. Discussion: The results of the experiment showed superiority of plot using the bacterial biofertilizers along with the chemical fertilizer, over the plots either using the chemical fertilizers alone or the bacterial biofertilizers alone. This can be attributed to the addition of bacterial biofertilizers with the chemical fertilizers in appropriate conditions. Our findings highlight the potential for bacterial biofertilizers to significantly improve crop yields and resource efficiency, contributing to food system transformation. To investigate the distribution characteristics of selenium (Se) in mountainous soil-crop systems and examine the threshold value of Se-rich soil, 275 soil samples and 153 associated crop samples (rice, maize, tea, nuts, konjac, mushrooms, buckwheat, and coffee) were collected in Ximeng County, a typical mountainous area in southwest China. The total Se, available Se, organic matter, pH, sampling point elevation, and crop Se content were analyzed to examine the distribution characteristics of soil Se and the ability of primary crops to enrich Se in Ximeng County. Random forest and multiple regression models were established to identify the factors influencing the available soil Se and the crop Se enrichment coefficient. Finally, the Se-rich soil threshold was examined based on the total Se, available Se, and Se content in primary crops (rice, maize, and tea). The results showed soil Se resource abundance in the study region, with high Se soil accounting for 64.72% of the entire area. The soil Se content displayed significant spatial autocorrelation. The average Se enrichment coefficient of the main cultivated crops included mushrooms > nuts > rice > coffee > tea > maize > buckwheat > konjac. The total Se content in the soil had the highest impact on the available Se content in the soil and the Se enrichment coefficient of crops. A Se-rich soil threshold of 0.3 mg·kg−1 was used for rice and maize, while that of tea was 0.4 mg·kg−1. This result provided a theoretical basis for developing and utilizing Se resources in mountainous soil in southwestern China and dividing the Se-rich soil threshold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bacterial microbiome plays crucial role in plants' resistance to diseases, nutrient uptake and productivity. We examined the microbiome characteristics of healthy and unhealthy strawberry farms, focusing on soil (bulk soil, rhizosphere soil) and plant (roots and shoots). The relative abundance of most abundant taxa were correlated with the chemical soil properties and shoot niche revealed the least amount of significant correlations between the two. While alpha and beta diversities did not show differences between health groups, we identified a number of core taxa (16–59) and marker bacterial taxa for each healthy (Unclassified Tepidisphaerales, Ohtaekwangia, Hydrocarboniphaga) and dysbiotic (Udaeobacter, Solibacter, Unclassified Chitinophagales, Unclassified Nitrosomonadaceae, Nitrospira, Nocardioides, Tardiphaga, Skermanella, Pseudomonas, Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium, Curtobacterium) niche. We also revealed selective pressure of strawberry rhizosphere soil and roots plants in unhealthy plantations increased stochastic ecological processes of bacterial microbiome assembly in shoots. Nevertheless, the response was not uniform between farms in Costa Rica while high and medium productivity groupings of farms had higher EBITDA, low and very low productivity farms experienced a decline similar to Guatemala. The difference in performance of farm groups in Costa Rica was due to a decline in production per hectare of the lower productivity group; while the difference between Guatemala and Costa Rica was firstly due to price differences, and secondarily due to lower productivity of some farm groups. The investment of Costa Rican farmers was undoubtedly supported by the substantially increased price received by farmers (as compared to Guatemala), reflected in the increase in export price of coffee from Costa Rica relative to Guatemala. This shows the importance of farmers receiving higher prices for their produce in enabling them to cover increasing production costs, invest in increasing productivity and maintain profitability. Changes in the production of agricultural products in Ukraine are analyzed. Forecasting of the volume of exports of agricultural products from Ukraine until 2027 was carried out. The following factors were taken into account: projected changes in real GDP in those countries that are the main importers of these products; reduction of cultivated agricultural land caused by military actions; forecasted changes in the population of Ukraine during the forecast period. It was concluded that there are no threats to Ukraine's food security caused by changes in the production and export of agricultural products. The research was based on a forecasting method, which made it possible to take into account retrospective information and a number of internal and external factors affecting the processes of production and export of agricultural products. The sources of information were the data of the International Monetary Fund and the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. The hypotheses of the study were confirmed, and the results showed that the volume of production of agricultural products will be sufficient to support the population of the country, while maintaining the previous proportion of exports. At the same time, there is a potential for growth of the share of products that Ukraine can export. The forecast volumes of export of Ukrainian agricultural products obtained can serve as a guideline for regulating exports, taking into account the issue of food security in Ukraine. Prior to the arrival of Europeans in North America, forest and grasslands individually covered a 3rd of the conterminous United States; however, following the colonial and pioneer periods, respectively, these land cover categories were reduced to 70% and 50% of their original prominence. The dominant driving force for native land conversion was agriculture, which expanded exponentially from the Atlantic to the Pacific, comprising over half the total land area of America at its peak in 1950. However, farmland area has subsequently declined by 25%, so what has been driving native plant declines north of the 30th latitudinal parallel over the past 75 years? Analysis of recovery plans issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service indicates that of the over 900 plant species "listed" as threatened and endangered the primary driver of decline was invasive species, followed by habitat alteration, and development, which collectively accounted for 93.2% of the primary drivers for listed species. In Canada, these three drivers of decline were the primary drivers for 81% of listed species. Comparatively, herbicides were identified as the primary or secondary driver in 13 out of 1124 cases (1.2%). Given that agricultural land area is contracting in the U.S. and Canada, there appears to be a misconception that agrochemicals are the seminal cause of native plant decline. Here, we explore the individual contribution of drivers relative to the historical events of North America to provide context and perspective as well as focus and prioritize conservation efforts accordingly. The karst plateau is dominated by mountainous and hilly landforms, with low mechanization level of cropland, high difficulty of cultivation, and obvious phenomenon of cropland abandonment, which threatens regional food security. This study aims to analyze the spatial-temporal variation and its driving mechanisms of abandoned cropland in the Karst Plateau in Eastern Yunnan, China (KPEYC) between 2001 and 2020. To achieve this goal, 18 key factors from population, economic environment, cropland attributes, and farming conditions are selected. Moreover, correlation analysis, geodetector, and regression analysis methods are applied from three perspectives: temporal change, spatial distribution and spatial-temporal change. The results show that: (i) The cropland abandonment rate (CAR) in the KPEYC shows a fluctuating trend, with an average value of 9.78%, and the spatial distribution shows a pattern of "high in the center and low in the south and north". (ii) From the perspective of temporal change, gross value of agricultural production, and gross value of industrial production have the largest correlation coefficients with CAR. (iii) The explanatory power of gross tertiary industrial production, gross value of industrial production, followed by soil thickness. (iv) Gross value of agricultural production, and gross tertiary industrial production are the core driving forces for the spatial-temporal change of CAR. The higher the gross value of agricultural production and gross tertiary industrial production, the lower the CAR. elevation, soil thickness, and traffic mileage are the main driving factors for the spatial-temporal change of CAR. The study indicates that economic factors are decisive for cropland abandonment in the KPEYC. Based on the results, this study can provide decision-making support for local prevention and control of cropland abandonment, and the local community needs to promote land transfer and concentration and local urbanization according to local conditions, improve agricultural policies, improve farming conditions, etc. in order to increase farmers' enthusiasm for production, promote the rational use of cropland, and solidly push forward ecological restoration and management, optimize ecological spatial patterns, manage serious areas of rocky desertification, and appropriately alleviate the contradiction between people and land. Introduction: Stringent regulations in pig farming, such as antibiotic control and the ban on certain additives and disinfectants, complicate disease control efforts. Despite the evolution of microbial communities inside the house environment, they maintain stability over the years, exhibiting characteristics specific to each type of production and, in some cases, unique to a particular company or farm production type. In addition, some infectious diseases are recurrent in specific farms, while other farms never present these diseases, suggesting a connection between the presence of these microorganisms in animals or their environment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterise environmental microbiomes of farms with high and low sanitary status, establishing the relationships between both, health status, environmental microbial ecology and its functionality. Methods: For this purpose, 6 pig farms were environmentally sampled. Farms were affiliated with a production company that handle the majority of the pigs slaughtered in Spain. This study investigated the relationship among high health and low health status farms using high throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing. In addition, to identify ecologically relevant functions and potential pathogens based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences obtained, functional Annotation with PROkaryotic TAXa (FAPROTAX) was performed. Results and Discussion: This study reveals notable differences in microbial communities between farms with persistent health issues and those with good health outcomes, suggesting a need for protocols tailored to address specific challenges. The variation in microbial populations among farms underscores the need for specific and eco-friendly cleaning and disinfection protocols. Utilizing deep learning for semantic segmentation of cropland from remote sensing imagery has become a crucial technique in land surveys. Cropland is highly heterogeneous and fragmented, and existing methods often suffer from inaccurate boundary segmentation. This paper introduces a UNet-like boundary-aware compensation model (BAFormer). Cropland boundaries typically exhibit rapid transformations in pixel values and texture features, often appearing as high-frequency features in remote sensing images. To enhance the recognition of these high-frequency features as represented by cropland boundaries, the proposed BAFormer integrates a Feature Adaptive Mixer (FAM) and develops a Depthwise Large Kernel Multi-Layer Perceptron model (DWLK-MLP) to enrich the global and local cropland boundaries features separately. Specifically, FAM enhances the boundary-aware method by adaptively acquiring high-frequency features through convolution and self-attention advantages, while DWLK-MLP further supplements boundary position information using a large receptive field. The efficacy of BAFormer has been evaluated on datasets including Vaihingen, Potsdam, LoveDA, and Mapcup. It demonstrates high performance, achieving mIoU scores of 84.5%, 87.3%, 53.5%, and 83.1% on these datasets, respectively. Notably, BAFormer-T (lightweight model) surpasses other lightweight models on the Vaihingen dataset with scores of 91.3% F1 and 84.1% mIoU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Determining the dynamics of organic carbon in subsoil (SOC, depth of 20–100 cm) is important with respect to the global C cycle and warming mitigation. However, there is still a huge knowledge gap in the dynamics of spatiotemporal changes in SOC in this layer. Combining traditional depth functions and machine-learning methods, we achieved soil β values and SOC dynamics at high resolution for global ecosystems (cropland, grassland, and forestland). First, quantified the spatial variability characteristics of soil β values and driving factors by analyzing 1221 soil profiles (0–100 cm) of globally distributed field observations. Then, based on multiple environmental variables and soil profile data, we mapped the grid-level soil β values with machine-learning approaches. Lastly, we evaluated the SOC density spatial distribution in different soil layers to determine the subsoil SOC stocks of various ecosystems. The subsoil SOC density values of cropland, grassland, and forestland were 63.8, 83.3, and 100.4 Mg ha–1, respectively. SOC density decreased with increasing depth, ranging from 5.6 to 30.8 Mg ha–1 for cropland, 7.5 to 40.0 Mg ha–1 for grassland, and 9.6 to 47.0 Mg ha–1 for forestland. The global subsoil SOC stock was 912 Pg C (cropland, grassland, and forestland were 67, 200, and 644 Pg C), in which an average of 54 % resided in the top 0–100 cm of the soil profile. Our results provide information on the vertical distribution and spatial patterns of SOC density at a 10 km resolution for areas of Global ecosystems, which providing a scientific basis for future studies pertaining to Earth system models. Proper utilization of agricultural land is a big challenge as they often laid over as waste lands. Farming is a significant occupation in any country and improving it further by promoting more farming opportunities will take the country towards making a huge leap forward. The issue in achieving this would be the lack of knowledge of cultivable land for food crops. The objective of this work is to utilize modern computer vision technology to identify and map cultivable land for agricultural needs. With increasing population and demand for food, improving the farming sector is crucial. However, the challenge lies in the lack of suitable land for food crops cultivation. To tackle this issue, we propose to use sophisticated image processing techniques on satellite images of the land to determine the regions that are capable of growing food crops. The solution architecture includes enhancement of satellite imagery using sophisticated pan sharpening techniques, notably the Brovey transformation, aiming to transform dull satellite images into sharper versions, thereby improving the overall quality and interpretability of the visual data. Making use of the weather data on the location observed and taking into factors like the soil moisture, weather, humidity, wind, sunlight times and so on, this data is fed into a generative pre-trained transformer model which makes use of it and gives a set of crops that are suitable to be grown on this piece of land under the said conditions. The results obtained by the proposed fusion approach is compared with the dataset provided by the government for different states in India and the performance was measured. We achieved an accuracy of 80% considering the crop suggested by our model and the predominant crop of the region. Lake Jošava (Croatia) is a shallow reservoir surrounded by agricultural land. In the present study, the trophic cascade was tested by examining the effects of stocking with common carp on plankton and periphytic microphytes. Before stocking, the phytoplankton community was dominated by the chrysophyte Synura uvella. In the epilithon and epiphyton, the predominant diatoms were prostrate, stalk-forming, and motile taxa representing an important food source for adult copepods. After stocking, phytoplankton biomass declined and the community shifted towards small centric diatoms, allowing the small-bodied zooplankton to exploit them. The lower biomass of adult copepods allowed rotifers to proliferate and exploit phytoplankton, while small cladocerans and nauplii fed primarily on epilithon. One month after stocking, phytoplankton was dominated by cryptophytes, small centric diatoms and chlorophytes, which were an important food for rotifers, while none of the zooplankton groups showed a significant relationship with the epilithic and epiphytic communities. By the end of the experiment, food was scarce due to reduced biomass of autotrophs, and zooplankton possibly began to feed on other sources. The modeling and assessment of land suitability is a prerequisite for land development and is one of the necessary needs to prevent land degradation. Maize is considered to be the most important crop, covering significant areas of agricultural lands in widely different regions across the world. However, not all available lands are equally suitable for maize cultivation. The main objective of this study was focused on identifying the potentials as well as the limitations of studied calcareous soils for maize cultivation in north Khuzestan province, Iran. Furthermore, some parametric models and multi-criteria land suitability evaluation methods for physical, chemical, fertility, and climatic factors (MC-LSE) were compared in estimating the maize yield. The required samples were taken from 23 land units by excavating control pedons. The necessary physicochemical parameters were then measured in the laboratory. The land indices were calculated by using different methods. The maize potential production of the investigated area was then obtained based on the climatic conditions. Finally, using land indices and the potential production, the estimated yield for each land unit was calculated and compared with the actual yield data. The obtained results indicated that the main limiting factors for maize yield in the region are high soil CaCO3 content, high salinity, high alkalinity and low organic matter. A comparison of predicted and actual yield indicated that the corrected square root method is accurate enough to assess land suitability and to estimate the maize yield with a high coefficient of determination (0.91) and a low RMSE value. International interest in loose-housed farrowing is growing and there are ongoing discussions within the European Union (EU) on new legal requirements. However, there is a lack of empirical data on loose-housed farrowing pen sizes and sow dimensions in commercial production. The aim of this study was to map and describe sow size and loose-housing farrowing pen size on commercial piglet-producing farms in Sweden. The study included 146 sows and 51 pen types on 35 medium sized to large Swedish piglet-producing farms (ranging from 106 to 1300 sows in production). Sow length ranged from 129 to 238 cm (mean ± SD 191.3 ± 19.3 cm) and sow height from 74 to 133 cm (86.7 ± 7.7 cm). Floor space occupied by the sow when lying down (length x height) ranged from 1.0 to 3.2 m2 (1.7 ± 0.3 m2). Pen length ranged from 259 to 415 cm (315.1 ± 24.3 cm), pen width from 188 to 245 cm (207.0 ± 10.7 cm), total pen area from 5.7 to 8.9 m2 (6.5 ± 0.5 m2), piglet corner area from 0.5 to 1.8 m2 (1.1 ± 0.4 m2) and area available for the sow (total area - piglet corner area) from 3.9 to 6.4 m2 (5.4 ± 0.6 m2). These results show that there is substantial variation in sow, pen and piglet corner size on commercial piglet-producing farms in Sweden. This poses a risk of mismatches between sow and pen size (pens too short in relation to sow dimensions), especially for older sows. These findings are of practical significance for animal welfare and production and emphasise the importance of designing loose-housed pens adapted to future sow, litter and piglet size. This paper assesses the environmental ambition of 2023-2027 Common Agricultural Policy in France. Since conditionality and agri-environment-climate measures are only marginally improved relative to the previous period, attention is focused on the new environmental instrument of the eco-scheme that in France targets the whole farm. Results suggest low environmental progress since almost all French farms would reach the standard level of the eco-scheme by one of the three access paths with unchanged farming practices, and 85% of them would reach the superior level. The percentage of farms at the superior level would be lower for farms specialized in annual crops than for cattle farms. We then show that the payment difference of €20 per hectare between the standard and superior level is probably insufficient for farms specialized in cereals, oilseeds and protein crops to offset the additional cost of the change in farm practices required to move from the standard to the superior level. AbstractThis article investigated the economic impact of adopting organic soil fertility measures (OSFM) on millet farming outcomes in rainfed regions of rural India. Using survey data from 900 millet farmers, the analysis applied an endogenous switching regression model to correct for selection bias arising from both observable and unobservable factors. The results indicated that factors such as soil type, use of farmyard manure, crop diversification, gender of the household head, access to agricultural resources, proximity to residence and markets and education levels significantly influenced farmers’ adoption of OSFM. Notably, the adoption of OSFM had a positive and statistically significant impact on farm profits, with OSFM adopters gaining ₹5998 more than nonadopters. The average treatment effect on the treated for OSFM was 9.80% higher than for non-OSFM farmers. My path to becoming a scientist has taken many twists and turns. This is perhaps not unusual to hear. Indeed, in discussions with my colleagues it seems that for many of us the path was never a straight one. Certainly, for me there have been moments when my whole world was encompassed by science and at other times, I have felt strongly that my time in science was up. I like to think that as scientists we ask a lot of questions and, for many of us, those questions extend to our very purpose as a scientist. My intention with this article is not to document my career path in detail or to provide very specific advice. Rather, I hope to describe how questions have defined my journey and to inspire others to occasionally pause and ask themselves what a career in science means to them. This paper draws on research on infrastructure‐led development and urbanisation in Nairobi to explore the new urban geographies of rentier capitalism in Africa. Under the banner of Kenya's Vision 2030 national development strategy, Nairobi's agrarian hinterlands have been transformed by major road building projects. These initiatives have catalysed a peri‐urban property boom characterised by the conversion of agricultural and ranching land into urban real estate and the verticalisation of road corridors. The paper identifies four processes of land transformation driving this real estate market expansion: commodification; speculation; autoconstruction; and assetisation. Adopting a multi‐scalar conjunctural approach, it argues that rentier capitalism in this context is spatialised through the dramatic extension of real estate frontiers along the route of peri‐urban road corridors. Development along these corridors assumes a “grey” character that defies conventional formal–informal distinctions, enabling the extraction of large rentier profits and encouraging the further proliferation of frontier spaces.
