Conventionally, fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing allows for multiple color printing, but it is limited to only various monochromatic colors. Consequently, the effect of progressive color transition cannot be reflected. To produce the progressive 3-D color printing effect, the only solution is to implement stereolithography technology, which is particularly expensive. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to develop a color mixing mechanism to be incorporated into an FDM 3D printer, which is relatively inexpensive. The underlying idea is to pre-mix the color so that the FDM 3D printer can produce a progressive color printing effect. Three conceptual color mixing mechanisms are designed, i.e., a triangular stirring shaft, a rectangular spoiler stirring shaft, and a spiral blade stirring shaft. The mixing process is modeled based on the non-Newtonian fluid theory, in which the Carreau model is used to simulate the motion of pseudoplastic fluids in FDM 3D printing under forced mixing. The resulting mixing ratio produced by all the designs is computed, which inspires the integrated design of rectangular spoiler stirring shaft and the spiral blade string shaft. Subsequently, the axial velocity of the mixed-color fluid, which increases from inlet to outlet, is verified. The integrated design is then fabricated and incorporated into the FDM 3D printer, and the progressive color printing effect is practically demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the new xylitol producer microorganisms is Barnettozyma populi Y-12728 and it has great potential for the industry with its pure xylitol production capability. Different immobilization strategies, the usability of baffled or normal flasks with different agitation speeds, and various lignocellulosic hydrolysates were studied in this research. The highest xylitol production and yield values were 11.99 g xylitol/L and 40.28 % for the C1 trial at 70 ml medium with a suspended cell. For the immobilization strategy, 1 % polyethyleneimine concentration, 1.5 mm surface lattice thicknesses, and 8 3D cubes were determined to be the optimum conditions with 17.84 g/L xylitol production and 0.473 g xylitol/g xylose yield values in a 70 ml volume medium at 200 rpm, 30 °C, and 6.0 initial pH for 3 days. Rice husk, wheat bran, and oat husk hydrolysates were also used as a substrate for xylitol fermentation. The highest xylitol production was 2.26 g/L for lignocellulosic hydrolysates. In this research, FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) based 3D printed cubes are used for the immobilization agent of Barnettozyma populi NRRL Y-12728 for the first time. In this era of the fourth industrial revolution, the integration of big data and 3D printing technology with the construction industry has maximized productivity. Currently, there is an active effort to research the optimal cladding structure through 3D printing technology to reduce production costs. This paper proposes a new type of 3D print curtain wall, using a high-strength ABS-M30 polymer panel, which is stronger than the standard acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) polymer, as an internally reinforced structure. This structure is fabricated via fused deposition modeling, a 3D printing method, to reduce the weight of the general cement panel. In addition, the shape of the polymer board was designed; three shapes were considered—O, W, and X types—which aided in further reducing the weight of the cladding. After comparing the center deformation of the structure through a lateral load test and finite element method analysis, the optimal model was selected. The measured data of the two methods at a design wind speed of 100% showed a difference of approximately 10%; however, at 150% of the design wind speed, the difference between the two sets of data increased to 27%. Abstract Background Extracting and three-dimensional (3D) printing an organ in a region of interest in DICOM images typically calls for segmentation as a first step in support of 3D printing. The DICOM images are not exported to STL data immediately, but segmentation masks are exported to STL models. After primary and secondary processing, including noise removal and hole correction, the STL data can be 3D printed. The quality of the 3D model is directly related to the quality of the STL data. This study focuses and reports on the DICOM to STL segmentation performance for nine software packages. Methods Multidetector row CT scanning was performed on a dry human mandible with two 10-mm-diameter bearing balls as a phantom. The DICOM image file was then segmented and exported to an STL file using nine different commercial/open-source software packages. Once the STL models were created, the data (file) properties and the size and volume of each file were measured, and differences across the software packages were noted. Additionally, to evaluate differences between the shapes of the STL models by software package, each pair of STL models was superimposed, with the observed differences between their shapes characterized as the shape error. Results: The data (file) size of the STL file and the number of triangles that constitute each STL model were different across all software packages, but no statistically significant differences were found across software packages. The created ball STL model expanded in the X-, Y-, and Z-axis directions, with the length in the Z-axis direction (body axis direction) being slightly longer than that in the other directions. The mean shape error between software packages of the mandibular STL model was 0.11 mm, but there was no statistically significant difference between them. Conclusions Our results revealed that there are some differences between the software packages that perform the segmentation and STL creation of the DICOM image data. In particular, the features of each software package appeared in the fine and thin areas of the osseous structures. When using these software packages, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of each.

Abstract Background In the oral and maxillofacial surgery and dentistry fields, the use of three-dimensional (3D) patient-specific organ models is increasing, which has increased the cost of obtaining them. We developed an environment in our facility in which we can design, fabricate, and use 3D models called the “One-stop 3D printing lab”. The lab made it possible to quickly and inexpensively produce the 3D models that are indispensable for oral and maxillofacial surgery. We report our 3D model fabrication environment after determining the dimensional accuracy of the models with different laminating pitches (; layer thickness) after fabricating over 300 3D models. Considerations were made for further reducing modeling cost and model print time. MDCT imaging was performed using a dry human mandible, and 3D CAD data were generated from the DICOM image data. 3D models were fabricated with a fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer MF-2000 (MUTOH) with a laminating pitch of 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.4 mm, or 0.5 mm. Each 3D model was then subjected to reverse scanning to evaluate the modeling conditions and deformation during modeling. For the 3D image processing system, Volume Extractor 3.0 (i-Plants Systems) and POLYGONALmeister V2 (UEL) were used. For the comparative evaluation of CAD data, spGauge 2014.1 (Armonicos) was used. Results As the laminating pitch increased, the weight of the 3D model, model print time, and material cost decreased, and no significant reduction in geometric accuracy was observed. Conclusions The amount of modeling material used and preparation cost were reduced by increasing the laminating pitch. The “One-stop 3D printing lab” made it possible to produce 3D models daily. The use of 3D models in the oral and maxillofacial surgery and dentistry fields will likely increase, and we expect that low-cost FDM 3D printers that can produce low-cost 3D models will play a significant role.

Software system and conceptual design are highly abstract and functionally based. In recent years, the software system has been developing rapidly whereas the growth of hardware system is slow. However, it is difficult to transfer the knowledge from software to hardware for conceptual design due to the discipline gaps between software and hardware. Axiomatic design theory bridges software and hardware design conceptually; but lacks in further methodologies for transforming the software system structure to the axiomatic design matrix. This paper focuses on developing a methodology to conceptually design firmware which will help bridge the gap between software and hardware conceptual design. A conversion method between the axiomatic design matrix and the widely used UML sequence diagram was developed. This helps the designers identify Functional Requirements (FRs), Design Parameters (DPs) and their dependencies (i.e., Functional Couplings). In this methodology Functional Messages (FMs) are introduced, defined as the messages of UML sequence diagram and they are used for transition to axiomatic design matrix. DPs of design matrix are defined as the objects in the UML sequence diagram, and FRs of design matrix are generated by merging FMs depending on their flow of information in the sequence diagram. A case study was performed on software system of FDM 3D Printer to validate the proposed method. The UML Sequence diagram of the software system of FDM 3D Printer was successfully transformed into the design matrix. Then Design Coupling Sequence approach was applied to find the proper executable sequence to improve the software design concept of the 3D printer and innovation opportunities were suggested. By using this method, the Software system architecture of FDM 3D Printer was improved conceptually by decoupling the highly coupled DPs, which makes the system more efficient by reducing the build time of a 3D printed part. This study intended for the assessment of the stiffness, tensile and bursting properties of 3D printed auxetic sinusoidal patterns of different density and thickness deposited on the nylon fabric by means of fused deposition modeling (FDM) with the use of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) filament. Morphology, weight variation, flex stiffness, tensile property, Poisson's ratio and bursting strength were analyzed for the characteristic evaluation of produced composite. The prototypes of two auxetic pattern repeat of 47 mm×43 mm and 20 mm×20 mm were developed named as low density (LD) and high density (HD) respectively. Both patterns were repeatedly combined to produce bigger size patterns and 3D printed with various thicknesses. Weight variation is found proportional to the density and thickness of 3D printed auxetic sinusoidal. Maximum up to 552 % weight increase was recorded for LD pattern and for HD 857 %. Flex stiffness increased with the rise of density and thickness of 3d printed auxetic sinusoidal pattern. Maximum flex stiffness for HD was 7.21 cm-g and for LD 4.73 cm-g. Warp direction is stiffest comparing with diagonal and weft in all cases. In case of tensile strength, a great extent of elongation was noticed due to the presence of auxetic sinusoidal 3D pattern and TPU filament. Maximum, more than 500 % elongation was showed by HD diagonal direction. HD patters exhibited more strength and toughness than LD patterns. In addition, warp direction is strongest and diagonal direction is weakest whereas the weft stays in between. Both LD-1.0 and HD-1.0 3D printed pattern showed negative Poisson's ratio and the value was between -1.0 to 0. The enhanced bursting strength is found in HD patterns up to 1514 kPa comparing up to 1449 for LD. Thus, this study confirmed the excellent stiffness, tensile and bursting properties of HD 3D printed auxetic sinusoidal pattern/nylon composite over LD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This experimental study investigates the effect of filling pattern on tensile and flexural strength and modulus of the parts printed via fused deposition modeling (FDM), 3D printer. The main downside of the printed products, with an FDM 3D printer, is the low strength compared to the conventional processes such as injection molding and machining. The issue stems from the low strength of thermoplastic materials and the weak bonding between deposited rasters and layers. Selection of proper filling pattern and infill percentage could highly influence the final mechanical properties of the printed products that were experimentally explored in this research work. Concentric, rectilinear, hilbert curve, and honeycomb patterns and filling percentage of 20, 50 and 100 were the variable parameters to print the parts. The results indicate that concentric pattern yields the most desirable tensile and flexural tensile properties, at all filling percentages, apparently due to the alignment of deposited rasters with the loading direction. Hilbert curve pattern also yielded a dramatic increase in the properties, at 100% filling. The dramatic increase could be mainly attributed to the promotion of strong bonding between the rasters and layers, caused by maintaining a high temperature of rasters at short travelling distances of nozzle for the hilbert curve pattern. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination revealed the strong bonding between rasters and sound microstructures (less flaws and voids) for concentric and hilbert curve pattern at a high filling percentage of 100. Besides, SEM examination revealed large voids in honeycomb pattern, deemed to be responsible for its lower strength and modulus, especially at the filling percentage of 100. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Applications for remotely operated rotary wing aerial vehicles, hereafter referred to as drones, are rapidly expanding in scope and such aircraft may soon become an integral part of everyday life as well as a source of innovation. However, it is quite difficult to improve drone flight performance and reduce development costs because performance optimization depends strongly on the intended application. As a result, drones are currently developed by trial and error using various rotary wing shapes. In this study, a device for evaluating the aerodynamic performance of rotary wings is proposed. We consider it likely that our proposed device will be useful for various drone-related applications in addition to facilitating drone development because it is inexpensive to produce and can eliminate the need for large expensive laboratory equipment such as wind tunnels when performing flight characteristic evaluations. In this paper, we report on the fabrication of our 3D general fused deposition modeling (FDM) printed device along with some experimental results.
