Search

Pulsars are small, dense, rotating stars that appear to flash as they sweep the sky with beams of radiation. This light originates from high energy particles following curved paths as they flow into interstellar space. Where these particles originate, and how they are accelerated to the necessary energies, is still an open question. The answer may change as the pulsar goes through its evolutionary process.Theorists have focused on four accelerating regions: the polar cap, slot gap, outer gap, and current sheet. Testing these models requires detecting pulsars and measuring their spectra and spin characteristics. It is to this task that I devote myself in this thesis, focusing in particular on the millisecond and soft gamma-ray pulsar populations.Millisecond pulsars are the oldest known pulsars, and are defined by their millisecond periods. I characterized the Fermi-LAT spectrum of PSR J0218+4232 as part of a larger work on searching for very high energy emission with MAGIC. While MAGIC was not able to detect the source, the Fermi-LAT spectrum was useful in providing insight as to why this was the case. Soft gamma-ray pulsars are brightest at MeV energies, and are challenging to study due to the lack of an instrument sensitive in this energy region. I characterize the spin characteristics of the soft pulsars PSR J1813-1749 and PSR J1846-0258 with NICER, and attempt to detect them with the Fermi-LAT to characterize a portion of their MeV spectra. While the spin characterization will aid in detecting these sources with future MeV telescopes, there was not a strong enough LAT detection to extract spectral information. Examining PSR J2022+3842 with NICER did lead to a detection of pulsations with Fermi-LAT, which improved upon the prior detection, as well as provided spectral information for emission modeling.

An excess gamma-ray signal coming from the direction of the Galactic center (GC) has been detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). Possible explanations for the excess include inaccuracies in the foreground/background model, an unresolved population of millisecond pulsars, and/or dark matter (DM) annihilation. However, the GC is a complicated region, and the true nature of the excess currently remains uncertain.M31 is the closest spiral galaxy to us and has been the subject of numerous studies. Because it is both massive and relatively nearby, M31 is an ideal target for studying galaxies, and historically it has played a major role in the development of our understanding of the Universe. Gamma-ray radiation coming from the inner region of M31 was first detected in 2010 by Fermi-LAT. Since the initial detection, all studies to date have focused on the innermost region, where the galactic disk can be observed. However, M31’s galactic disk only amounts to roughly 10% of the galaxy’s total mass, with the other 90% being in the form of DM, which extends well beyond the inner region of the galaxy.In this dissertation, a detailed study of the gamma-ray emission towards M31's outer halo is made. Using the cosmic ray propagation code GALPROP, specialized interstellar emission models are constructed to characterize the foreground emission from the Milky Way (MW), including a self-consistent determination of the isotropic component, and an in-depth analysis of the systematic uncertainties related to the observations. Evidence is found for an extended excess that appears to be distinct from the conventional MW foreground, having a total radial extension upwards of ~120-200 kpc from the center of M31. A DM interpretation is found to provide a good description of the observed emission and is consistent with the GC excess DM interpretation. However, uncertainties in the MW foreground, and in particular, modeling of the H I-related components, have not been fully explored and may impact the results.

Star-forming and starburst galaxies (SBGs), which are well-known cosmic-ray (CR) reservoirs, are expected to emit gamma rays and neutrinos predominantly via hadronic collisions. In this work we analyze the 10-year Fermi-Low Energy Technique (LAT) spectral energy distributions of 13 nearby galaxies by means of a physical model that accounts for high-energy proton transport in starburst nuclei and includes the contribution of primary and secondary electrons. In particular, we test the hypothesis that the observed gamma-ray fluxes are mostly due to star-forming activity, which is in agreement with the available star formation rates coming from infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) observations. Through this observation-based approach, we determine the most-likely neutrino counterparts from star-forming and SBGs and quantitatively assess the ability of current and upcoming neutrino telescopes to detect them as point-like sources. We also generate mock gamma-ray data to simulate the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) performance in detecting these sources. Moreover, we propose a test to discriminate between the two different CR transport models for the starburst nuclei by looking at the different gamma-ray expectations. We point out that current data already gives a slight preference to CR models, which are dominated by advection.

The radio galaxy 3C 84 is a well-studied source of radio emission and was detected as NGC1275 also in the MeV/TeV regime by gamma-ray detectors like MAGIC and Fermi-LAT. It is still unclear where and how the gamma-ray emission is produced. In this thesis, I will confine possible emission sites and exclude the region near the black hole as the origin of the gamma-ray production. For this aim, I investigate the optical depth of the broad-line region using data published by MAGIC and Fermi-LAT. Furthermore, a cross-correlation study is performed to find a possible correlation between the light curves of the two radio components in 3C84 detected by the VLBA and the gamma-ray light curve measured by Fermi-LAT. A significant correlation between the core component and the gamma-ray emission is found, which is in line with the results I derive from analyzing the optical depth of the broad-line region. For the first time, I perform a long-term analysis of NGC1275 for four years of MAGIC data, which reveals a short flare at the beginning of 2017 and a very low state of activity since then. To perform this long-term analysis, the software framework autoMAGIC was developed in the course of this thesis. autoMAGIC enables fully automatic and reproducible analyses of long-term data and can be used for the automatic processing of MAGIC data in the future., Der aktive galaktische Kern 3C84, bekannt als Quelle von Radiostrahlung, wurde in den letzten Jahren auch von Gammastrahlungsdetektoren wie MAGIC und Fermi-LAT detektiert. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde außerdem die erste Langzeitstudie der von MAGIC gemessenen hochenergetischen Gammastrahlung von NGC1275 durchgeführt. Die Ergebinisse dieser Analyse zeigen ein kurzes Aufleuchten der Quelle Anfang 2017 und danach lediglich einen sehr schwachen Fluss. Um diese Langzeitanalyse durchzuführen, wurde autoMAGIC entwickelt, ein Programm zur automatischen und reproduzierbaren Analyse der von MAGIC gemessenen Daten. autoMAGIC kann über diese Arbeit hinaus für alle Standardanalysen genutzt werden und wird maßgeblich dazu beitragen die Daten der MAGIC Kollaboration für die kommenden Jahrzehnte zu archivieren.

The nature of high-energy gamma-ray emission from Star-Forming Galaxies is of utmost importance for understanding both the origin of Cosmic Rays and the high-energy processes that shape galaxy formation. Observations from the gamma-ray telescope Fermi-LAT have detected gamma-ray emission from a handful of nearby Star-Forming Galaxies. Interestingly, observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud show evidence for a spectral cutoff at energies of approximately 10 GeV. This has raised the question as to whether some Star-Forming Galaxies are unable to contain their Cosmic Ray population. Using the Fermitools to analyse the gamma-ray emission from a selection of bright nearby Star-Forming Galaxies, this study intends to explore the possibility of finding further evidence for exponential cutoffs in the gamma-ray spectrum of Star-Forming Galaxies. The shape of the combined spectrum of the 49 galaxies in the sample was determined using least-square fitting of a single power law, a broken power law and a power law with an exponential cutoff. No evidence of an exponentialcutoff was found and the shape of the spectrum was best described by a broken power law with indices Γ1 = -2.48 ± 0.05 and Γ2 = -0.88 ± 0.09. This is in poor agreement with previous observations, which favour a simple power law with an index in the range -2.2 to -2.4. Interestingly, the single power law, while disfavoured over the broken power law at ~7σ, was best fit with the index Γ = -2.35 ± 0.06, which is surprisingly well in agreement with previous observations. The discrepancy between the results presented here and those found in the literature is interpreted as due to insufficient treatment of background fluctuations and the possible existence of bright sources at the unverified blank sky locations used for modelling the background.

In high energy astrophysics, several questions are still open and amongst them is the origin of Galactic cosmic rays. The first observational evidence of accelerated particles has only been revealed twenty years ago. Since then, supernova remnants, pulsars and their nebulae are known to efficiently accelerate particles but several questions still hold. In particular, evidence of accelerated protons (which consist on 90% of the cosmic-ray spectrum) is still elusive and several gamma-ray sources have unknown origin. Non-thermal emissions produced in Galactic accelerators provide insights about the nature of the accelerated particles. In particular, while radio and X-ray observations indicate the presence of accelerated electrons, gamma rays can be produced by both electrons and protons (or nuclei in general) but it may be difficult to assess the origin of the emission.The technical part of this thesis concerns the study of the impact on the reconstructed H.E.S.S. data when using atmospheric profiles measured with a lidar instead of a standard atmospheric model currently used. Very high energy gamma rays propagate into the atmosphere before reaching Cherenkov Telescopes and thus, the accuracy of our measurements depends on our understanding of the atmospheric composition. Using run-wise simulations based on lidar data, we study the impact on the instrument response functions and we analyse data to quantify the effect on the spectral reconstruction.The first scientific goal of this thesis is to understand the gamma-ray emission from two supernova remnants (G326.3-1.8 et RX J1713-3946) through detailed spectro-morphological analyses. The analysis of the composite supernova remnant G326.3-1.8, with Fermi-LAT data, has led to two major results: a new evidence of accelerated protons and the first morphological and spectral separation in gamma rays of two nested components. The study of RX J1713-3946, with H.E.S.S. data and using the Ctools package, confirms a significant gamma-ray extension beyond the X-ray emitting shell but its origin remains unclear.The second part of this thesis aims to constrain the nature of the unidentified TeV sources revealed in the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey. We thus present a generic code, based on a multi-wavelength approach, to find counterparts and estimate physical parameters like the radio spectral index and the mean magnetic field. We apply this code on five unidentified TeV sources and we put constraints on their nature. In particular, we present two high-confusion cases, for which the TeV emission is probably due to the contribution from different components, emphasizing the importance of multi-wavelength data to understand the origin of the gamma-ray emission.; Dans le domaine de l’astrophysique des hautes énergies, de nombreuses questions restent à ce jour sans réponse et, parmi elles se trouve l’origine des rayons cosmiques Galactiques. La première preuve observationnelle de ces particules accélérées a été apportée au sein d’un vestige de supernova il y a seulement vingt ans. Depuis, nous savons que les vestiges de supernova, les pulsars et leurs nébuleuses accélèrent efficacement des particules mais de nombreuses interrogations subsistent encore. Les preuves directes concernant l’accélération de protons (constituant 90% du rayonnement cosmique) sont rares et de nombreuses sources nouvellement détectées en gamma sont de nature inconnue. Les rayonnements produits au sein des accélérateurs Galactiques fournissent d’importants éléments de réponse quant à la nature des particules accélérées. En particulier, alors que les domaines de la radio et des rayons X ne tracent que les électrons accélérés, les rayons gamma peuvent inférer la présence d’électrons et également de protons (et noyaux en général) mais l’émission s’avère le plus souvent difficile à interpréter.Les mesures des rayons gamma de très hautes énergies dépendent de notre connaissance de l’atmosphère terrestre, dans lequel ils se propagent avant d’être détectés par les télescopes Tcherenkov au sol tels que le réseau H.E.S.S. La partie technique de cette thèse concerne l’étude de l’impact des profils d’atmosphère sur les données H.E.S.S. Grâce à des simulations et des analyses prenant en compte les caractéristiques propres à chaque prise de données, nous étudions l’impact des profils d’atmosphère mesurés sur les fonctions de réponse de l’instrument et sur la reconstruction spectrale.Le premier objectif scientifique de cette thèse est de comprendre la nature de l’émission gamma au sein de deux vestiges de supernova (G326.3-1.8 et RX J1713.7-3946) par le biais d’analyses spectro-morphologiques détaillées. L’analyse de G326.3-1.8, avec les données du Fermi-LAT, a mené à deux résultats importants: une nouvelle preuve d’accélération de protons et la première séparation morphologique et spectrale de deux composantes imbriquées en gamma. L’analyse de RX J1713.7-3946, avec les données H.E.S.S. et les outils d'analyse Ctools, a confirmé une extension plus importante en gamma qu’en rayons X mais dont l’origine reste encore incertaine.La deuxième partie de cette thèse entreprend de discuter la nature des sources Galactiques non-associées au TeV. Pour ce faire, nous présentons un code générique visant à rechercher des contreparties multi-longueurs d’onde sur ces sources au TeV, et permettant de poser des contraintes sur des paramètres physiques tels que le champ magnétique moyen et l’indice spectral en radio. En appliquant ce code sur cinq sources non-identifiées du relevé du plan Galactique de H.E.S.S., nous apportons des arguments quant à leur origine. En particulier, nous étudions deux sources, dont l’émission au TeV provient probablement de multiples contributions, soulevant ainsi l’importance des données multi-longueurs d’onde pour comprendre la nature de l’émission en gamma.

We report a quasidifferential upper limit on the extremely-high-energy (EHE) neutrino flux above 5×106 GeV based on an analysis of nine years of IceCube data. The astrophysical neutrino flux measured by IceCube extends to PeV energies, and it is a background flux when searching for an independent signal flux at higher energies, such as the cosmogenic neutrino signal. We have developed a new method to place robust limits on the EHE neutrino flux in the presence of an astrophysical background, whose spectrum has yet to be understood with high precision at PeV energies. A distinct event with a deposited energy above 106 GeV was found in the new two-year sample, in addition to the one event previously found in the seven-year EHE neutrino search. These two events represent a neutrino flux that is incompatible with predictions for a cosmogenic neutrino flux and are considered to be an astrophysical background in the current study. The obtained limit is the most stringent to date in the energy range between 5×106 and 2×1010 GeV. This result constrains neutrino models predicting a three-flavor neutrino flux of Eν2φνe+νμ+ντ≃2×10-8 GeV/cm2 sec sr at 109 GeV. Der Nachweis extraterrestrischer Gammastrahlung in diesem Energiebereich erlaubt Rückschlüsse auf die astrophysikalischen Quellen der Gammastrahlung und Beschleunigungsmechanismen kosmischer Strahlung mit Energien zwischen 1 GeV und ∼ 10 TeV. Die Beobachtung von Quellen während Phasen vorübergehend erhöhter Gammastrahlungslüsse (‘Flares’) ermöglicht dabei eine besonders empfindliche Untersuchung der Produktionsmechanismen kosmischer Strahlung in den Quellen, da die Eigenschaften kürzlich beschleunigter Teilchen unmittelbar studiert werden können. Der Hauptteil dieser Dissertation stellt das neueste Verzeichnis zeitlich variabler Gammastrahlungsquellen über 100 MeV vor, den zweiten ‘Fermi All-sky Variability Analysis’ Katalog (2FAV). Der 2FAV Katalog enthält über 4500 Flares, welche in den ersten 7.4 Jahren der LAT Datennahme auf einem hohen Vertrauensniveau gemessen und an 518 verschiedenen Himmelspositionen beobachtet wurden. 441 dieser Quellpositionen im 2FAV können Aktiven Galaktischen Kernen (AGN) zugeordnet werden. Die verbleibenden 77 Quellpositionen besitzen keine sichere Entsprechung in anderen Verzeichnissen von Gammastrahlungs- oder Blazarquellen und stellen möglicherweise neue Gammastrahlungsquellen dar. Bei der Untersuchung der Spektren der 2FAV Flares, welche sogenannten ‘Flat-Spectrum’ Radioquasaren (FSRQ) - eine Unterklasse der AGN - zugeordnet werden können, wurde durchweg ein härteres Gammastrahlungsspektrum während Phasen erhöhter Gammastrahlungsemission beobachtet. Zudem wurde eine Untergrenze in der Verteilung der spektralen Exponenten, Γ ≳ 1.5, in der Stichprobe der untersuchten Flares festgestellt. Unter der Annahme eines einfachen leptonischen Modells und dass die Verteilung beschleunigter Teilchen im Inertialsystem der Quelle isotrop ist, folgt daraus, dass die Energiespektren der kosmischen Strahlung, welche die Gammastrahlungs-Flares verursachen, mit dN/dE ∝ E −2 oder stärker abfallen. Eine andere Möglichkeit, die Beschleunigungsmechanismen kosmischer Strahlung zu untersuchen, ist die Messung der Polarisation der begleitenden Gammastrahlung. Der letzte Teil dieser Dissertation enthält eine vorläufige Studie zur Messbarkeit linearer Polarisation astrophysikalischer Gammastrahlung mit dem LAT-Instrument. Bei Konversion hochenergetischer Photonen in Elektron-Positron-Paare verursacht eine lineare Polarisation der Gammastrahlung eine Modulation des Azimutwinkels der Ebenen, in denen die Elektron-Positron-Paare erzeugt wurden. Obwohl der LAT ursprünglich nicht als Polarimeter konzipiert wurde, ermöglicht das Instrument eine Messung dieser Modulation für niederenergetische Primärteilchen (≲ 200 MeV), welche in den Silikonschichten des Detektors konvertieren. Eine Auswahl solcher Ereignisse, selektiert durch Algorithmen überwachten maschinelles Lernens (‘supervised machine learning’), wird verwendet um die statistischen und systematischen Messunsicherheiten abzuschätzen, denen eine Messung unterworfen ist. Werden allein statistische Unsicherheiten berücksichtigt, ist der LAT in der Lage, einen Polarisationsgrad von 30−50% der Gammastrahlungsflüsse vom Vela-Pulsar und vom Krebs-Pulsarwindnebels nach einer Beobachtungszeit von zehn Jahren auf einem Vertrauensniveau von 5σ nachzuweisen. Werden zusätzlich systematische Unsicherheiten berücksichtigt, wird abgeschätzt, dass ein Polarisationsgrad von ∼ 46% auf einem Vertrauensniveau von 5σ nachweisbar ist, indem eine Auswahl von AGN als unpolarisierte Testprobe verwendet und mit umfangreichen Monte-Carlo Simulationen verglichen wird. Die Analyse in dieser Dissertation berücksichtigt zum ersten Mal sämtliche Aspekte einer polarization-sensitiven Ereignissrekonstruktion und dienst damit als Grundlage für zukünftige Nachweisversuche der Polarisation astrophysikalischer Gammastrahlung mit dem LAT.The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) is a space-based pair-conversion telescope sensitive to gamma rays with energies from ∼ 30 MeV to several hundreds of GeV. Observing gamma rays in this energy range, we gain information on the sources and acceleration mechanisms of cosmic rays (CRs) of energies from ∼ 1 GeV to ∼ 10 TeV. Studying the emission of gamma-ray sources during periods of enhanced activity (flares) provides a sensitive probe of the production mechanisms of CRs, as it makes it possible to investigate the distributions of the freshly-accelerated particles. The main part of this work presents the latest catalog of variable gamma-ray sources above 100 MeV, the second Fermi All-sky Variability Analysis catalog (2FAV). The 2FAV catalog contains more than 4500 flares detected at high significance in the first 7.4 years of LAT observations and the 518 sources from which these flares originate. Probable counterparts, mostly active galactic nuclei (AGN), have been found for 441 sources in the 2FAV. The remaining 77 sources have no reliable counterparts in other gamma-ray or blazar catalogs; they are potentially new gamma-ray sources. Studying the spectra of the 2FAV flares, we observe a harder-when-brighter behavior for the entire sample of flares associated with lat spectrum radio quasars, a class of AGN. We also observe a minimum value in the distribution of the photon index Γ of the flares, corresponding to Γ ≳ 1.5. In a simple leptonic scenario, assuming that the distribution of accelerated particles is isotropic in the source reference frame, this limit on the spectral hardness implies that the spectra of the accelerated particles responsible for the lare is never harder than dN/dE ∝ E −2. Another way to probe the environments where CRs are accelerated is by measuring the polarization of the gamma rays. A preliminary study of the LAT sensitivity to linear polarization of astrophysical gamma-rays is presented in the last part of this thesis. In the pair-production regime, linear polarization of the gamma-rays induces a modulation in the azimuthal angle of the planes where the electron-positron pairs are produced. Although not designed as a polarimeter, the LAT has the potential to measure this modulation using low energy (≲ 200 MeV) events converting in the silicon detector layers of its tracker. A selection of these events using supervised machine learning algorithms is presented and used as a basis to estimate the statistical and systematic uncertainties afecting the measurement. Considering only statistical uncertainties, a degree of polarization of ∼ 30−50% could be detected at the 5σ confidence level for the Vela pulsar and the Crab pulsar-wind nebula after 10 years of observation. By including systematic uncertainties, a 5σ sensitivity limit corresponding to a polarization degree of ∼ 46% is estimated, using a stack of AGN as an unpolarized test source and comparing the data with detailed Monte Carlo simulations. They are a prime source candidate for the production of high-energy neutrinos. This work describes the search for a cumulative neutrino flux from all 862 Fermi-LAT 2LAC blazars and four spectrally defined sub-populations. Selected muon-track events from three years of IceCube data are analyzed with an unbinned likelihood stacking approach. Two different weighting schemes are used to account for the unknown relative flux contributions of each source. Nine of ten tests show slight overfluctuations, none of which are statistically significant. An upper flux limit is calculated constraining the maximal contribution of the 2LAC blazars to the recently discovered diffuse TeV-PeV neutrino flux to be 23% or less assuming the currently favored spectral index for the astrophysical flux of around −2.5 and an equal composition of neutrino flavors arriving at Earth. The results do not require a purely hadronic production of the observed gamma rays and remain valid for moderately harder spectra or smaller sub-populations, e.g. the TeVCat sub-sample, up to a factor of around 2. Additionally, upper limits are calculated for generic power-law spectra and for concrete spectral models of the diffuse neutrino emission of blazar populations. 12 out of 14 of these models are either constrained or excluded. If the largest overfluctuation is interpreted as a physics effect, one finds a soft flux in the 5-10 TeV region that is compatible with gamma-ray observations. Further years of data are already available which makes this scenario testable in the near future. The TeV binary system LS I +61 degrees 303 is known for its regular, non-thermal emission pattern that traces the orbital period of the compact object in its 26.5 day orbit around its B0 Ve star companion. The system typically presents elevated TeV emission around apastron passage with flux levels between 5% and 15% of the steady flux from the Crab Nebula (> 300 GeV). In this article, VERITAS observations of LS I + 61 degrees. 303 taken in late 2014 are presented, during which bright TeV flares around apastron at flux levels peaking above 30% of the Crab Nebula flux were detected. This is the brightest such activity from this source ever seen in the TeV regime. The strong outbursts have rise and fall times of less than a day. The short timescale of the flares, in conjunction with the observation of 10 TeV photons from LS I + 61 degrees 303 during the flares, provides constraints on the properties of the accelerator in the source. When a massive star explodes as a supernova, it injects a huge amount of energy into its surroundings. The resultant expanding blast-wave and its interaction with the surrounding medium is known as a supernova remnant (SNR). The shock created by the supernova event is believed to be the primary accelerator of cosmic rays (CRs) in our Galaxy. While SNRs are observable across the electromagnetic spectrum, studying the gamma-ray emission from these sources is crucial in understanding the origin of CRs and acceleration processes acting therein. Recent advances in gamma-ray astronomy present new opportunities to study the aftermath of stellar explosions at gamma-ray energies. In 2008 the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope was launched into orbit and, with its unmatched gamma-ray resolution, has opened up a new window on the high-energy sky. In this thesis, I present new work using data from the primary instrument on the Fermi observatory, the Large Area Telescope (LAT), to study both individual SNRs as well as the population of remnants observable by the LAT, with a focus on searching for spatially extended emission from these remnants. To uniformly determine the high-energy properties of SNRs, I developed an automated method to systematically characterize the gamma-ray emission in a region of the sky. Applying this method to the locations of several hundred radio-observed SNRs, we classified 30 gamma-ray sources as likely being associated with SNRs. Our results, combined with archival radio, X-ray, and TeV observations, serve to challenge previously sufficient, simple gamma-ray SNR emission models. I also present a study of the sources detected above 50 GeV, focusing on those lying in the Galactic plane. 31 sources were shown to be significantly spatially extended with 5 of those being newly detected. Finally, I present a dedicated analysis of one of the 5 newly detected extended sources. I determined that the extended GeV emission likely originated from the shock of SNR G150.3+4.5. Combined with archival radio and X-ray data, I consider several possible origin scenarios, including one in which the SNR may be one of the youngest, closest gamma-ray SNRs detected by the LAT.

We report constraints on the sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) above $10^{9}$ GeV, based on an analysis of seven years of IceCube data. This analysis efficiently selects very high energy neutrino-induced events which have deposited energies from $\sim 10^6$ GeV to above $10^{11}$ GeV. Two neutrino-induced events with an estimated deposited energy of $(2.6 \pm 0.3) \times 10^6$ GeV, the highest neutrino energies observed so far, and $(7.7 \pm 2.0) \times 10^5$ GeV were detected. The atmospheric background-only hypothesis of detecting these events is rejected at 3.6$\sigma$. The hypothesis that the observed events are of cosmogenic origin is also rejected at $>$99% CL because of the limited deposited energy and the non-observation of events at higher energy, while their observation is consistent with an astrophysical origin. Our limits on cosmogenic neutrino fluxes disfavor the UHECR sources having cosmological evolution stronger than the star formation rate, e.g., active galactic nuclei and $\gamma$-ray bursts, assuming proton-dominated UHECRs. Constraints on UHECR sources including mixed and heavy UHECR compositions are obtained for models of neutrino production within UHECR sources. Our limit disfavors a significant part of parameter space for active galactic nuclei and new-born pulsar models., Comment: The erratum is bundled with the original published version of the letter together with supplemental materials

The TeV binary system LS I +61$^\circ$ 303 is known for its regular, non-thermal emission pattern which traces the orbital period of the compact object in its 26.5 day orbit around its B0 Ve star companion. The system typically presents elevated TeV emission around apastron passage with flux levels between 5% and 15% of the steady flux from the Crab Nebula (> 300 GeV). In this article, VERITAS observations of LS I +61$^\circ$ 303 taken in late 2014 are presented, during which bright TeV flares around apastron at flux levels peaking above 30% of the Crab Nebula flux were detected. This is the brightest such activity from this source ever seen in the TeV regime. The strong outbursts have rise and fall times of less than a day. The short timescale of the flares, in conjunction with the observation of 10 TeV photons from LS I +61$^\circ$ 303 during the flares, provides constraints on the properties of the accelerator in the source., 9 pages, 2 figures. The nature of dark matter is a longstanding enigma of physics; it may consist of particles beyond the Standard Model that are still elusive to experiments. Among indirect search techniques, which look for stable products from the annihilation or decay of dark matter particles, or from axions coupling to high-energy photons, observations of the $\gamma$-ray sky have come to prominence over the last few years, because of the excellent sensitivity of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope mission. The LAT energy range from 20 MeV to above 300 GeV is particularly well suited for searching for products of the interactions of dark matter particles. In this report we describe methods used to search for evidence of dark matter with the LAT, and review the status of searches performed with up to six years of LAT data. We also discuss the factors that determine the sensitivities of these searches, including the magnitudes of the signals and the relevant backgrounds, considering both statistical and systematic uncertainties. We project the expected sensitivities of each search method for 10 and 15 years of LAT data taking. In particular, we find that the sensitivity of searches targeting dwarf galaxies, which provide the best limits currently, will improve faster than the square root of observing time. Current LAT limits for dwarf galaxies using six years of data reach the thermal relic level for masses up to 120 GeV for the $b\bar{b}$ annihilation channel for reasonable dark matter density profiles. With projected discoveries of additional dwarfs, these limits could extend to about 250 GeV. With as much as 15 years of LAT data these searches would be sensitive to dark matter annihilations at the thermal relic cross section for masses to greater than 400 GeV (200 GeV) in the $b\bar{b}$ ($\tau^+ \tau^-$) annihilation channels., Comment: Updated with a few additional and corrected references; otherwise, text is identical to previous version. Interstellar and circumstellar matter.-- et al., The all-sky Planck survey in 9 frequency bands was used to search for emission from all 274 known Galactic supernova remnants. Of these, 16 were detected in at least two Planck frequencies. The radio-through-microwave spectral energy distributions were compiled to determine the mechanism for microwave emission. In only one case, IC 443, is there high-frequency emission clearly from dust associated with the supernova remnant. In all cases, the low-frequency emission is from synchrotron radiation. As predicted for a population of relativistic particles with energy distribution that extends continuously to high energies, a single power law is evident for many sources, including the Crab and PKS 1209-51/52. A decrease in flux density relative to the extrapolation of radio emission is evident in several sources. Their spectral energy distributions can be approximated as broken power laws, Sν ∝ ν−α, with the spectral index, α, increasing by 0.5–1 above a break frequency in the range 10–60 GHz. We report on simultaneous broadband observations of the TeV-emitting blazar Markarian 501 between 1 April and 10 August 2013, including the first detailed characterization of the synchrotron peak with Swift and NuSTAR. During the campaign, the nearby BL Lac object was observed in both a quiescent and an elevated state. The broadband campaign includes observations with NuSTAR, MAGIC, VERITAS, the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), Swift X-ray Telescope and UV Optical Telescope, various ground-based optical instruments, including the GASP-WEBT program, as well as radio observations by OVRO, Mets\"ahovi and the F-Gamma consortium. Some of the MAGIC observations were affected by a sand layer from the Saharan desert, and had to be corrected using event-by-event corrections derived with a LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) facility. This is the first time that LIDAR information is used to produce a physics result with Cherenkov Telescope data taken during adverse atmospheric conditions, and hence sets a precedent for the current and future ground-based gamma-ray instruments. The NuSTAR instrument provides unprecedented sensitivity in hard X-rays, showing the source to display a spectral energy distribution between 3 and 79 keV consistent with a log-parabolic spectrum and hard X-ray variability on hour timescales. None (of the four extended NuSTAR observations) shows evidence of the onset of inverse-Compton emission at hard X-ray energies. We apply a single-zone equilibrium synchrotron self-Compton model to five simultaneous broadband spectral energy distributions. We find that the synchrotron self-Compton model can reproduce the observed broadband states through a decrease in the magnetic field strength coinciding with an increase in the luminosity and hardness of the relativistic leptons responsible for the high-energy emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

This manuscript is about high energy gamma-ray astronomy (between ~30 MeV and ~300 GeV) with the Fermi-LAT satellite and very high energy gamma-ray astronomy (above ~100GeV) via the H.E.S.S. experiment. The second phase of the H.E.S.S. experiment began in July 2012 with the inauguration of a fifth 28m-diameter telescope added to the intial array composed of four 12m-diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. In the first part of this thesis, we present the development of an analysis in hybrid mode based on a multivariate method dedicated to detect and study sources with different spectral shapes and the first analysis results on real data. The second part is dedicated to the research of blazar candidates among the Fermi-LAT unidentified sources of the 2FGL catalog. A first development is based on a multivariate approach using discriminant parameters built with the 2FGL catalog parameters. A second development is done with the use of the WISE satellite catalog and a non-parametric technic in order to find the blazar-like infrared counterparts of the unidentified sources of the 2FGL catalog., Ce manuscrit traite d'astronomie gamma de haute énergie (entre ~30 MeV et ~300 GeV) par l'intermédiaire du satellite Fermi-LAT et d'astronomie gamma de très haute énergie (au-delà de ~100 GeV) via l'expérience H.E.S.S. La seconde phase de l'expérience H.E.S.S. a débuté en juillet 2012 avec l'ajout d'un cinquième télescope de 28 mètres de diamètre au réseau initialement constitué de quatre télescopes de 12 mètres de diamètre d'imagerie atmosphérique Tcherenkov. Dans la première partie de cette thèse, nous présentons le développement d'une analyse en mode hybride basée sur une méthode multivariée dédiée à la détection et à l'étude de sources ayant des caractéristiques spectrales différentes ainsi que les premiers résultats des analyses de données réelles. La seconde partie est dédiée à la recherche des candidats blazars parmi les sources non identifiées du Fermi-LAT du catalogue 2FGL. Un premier travail est consacré à l'identification des candidats blazars à l'aide de méthodes multivariées utilisant des variables discriminantes construites à partir des paramètres du catalogue 2FGL. Dans un second temps, à l'aide du catalogue de sources infrarouges obtenues par le satellite WISE et d'une méthode non-paramétrique nous recherchons les contreparties de type blazars des sources non-identifiées.

Galaxy clusters are the most massive bound systems known in the Universe and are believed to have formed through large scale structure formation. They host relativistic cosmic-ray (CR) populations and are gravitationally bound by large amounts of Dark Matter (DM), both providing conditions in which high-energy gamma rays may be produced either via CR interactions with the intracluster medium or through the annihilation or decay of DM particles. Prior to the launch of the Fermi satellite, predictions were optimistic that these sources would be established as γ-ray-bright objects by observations through its prime instrument, the Large Area Telescope (LAT). Yet, despite numerous efforts, even a single firm cluster detection is still pending. This thesis presents a number of studies based on data taken by the LAT over its now seven year mission aiming to discover these γ rays. Using a joint likelihood technique, we study the γ-ray spectra of a sample of nearby clusters searching for a CR-induced signal due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. While we find excesses in some individual targets, we attribute none to the cluster. Hence, we constrain the maximum injection efficiency of hadrons being accelerated in structure formation shocks and the fraction of CR-to-thermal pressure. We also perform a refined search targeting the Coma cluster specifically due to its large variety of existing observations in other wavebands. In the latter case we find weak indications of an excess which however falls below the detection threshold. Because the cluster emission we consider is inherently extended, we need to take into account the imperfect modeling of the foreground emission, which may be particularly difficult such as is the case with the Virgo cluster. Here, we assess the systematics associated with the foreground uncertainties and derive limits based on an improved background model of the region. For the first time we derive limits on the γ-ray flux from CR and DM-interactions in which we take into account the dynamical state of the system. For DM we also include the contribution from substructure. The DM domain is further explored by searching for line-like features as they arise from the annihilation of DM into two photons in a large sample of clusters, including Virgo and Coma. Finding no evidence for γ-ray lines, we derive limits on the DM annihilation cross section that are roughly a factor 10 (100) above that derived from observations of the galactic center assuming an optimistic (conservative) scenario regarding the boost due to DM substructure. Overwhelming evidence for the existence of Dark Matter (DM), in the form of an unknownparticle filling the galactic halos, originates from many observations in astrophysics and cosmology: its gravitational effects are apparent on galactic rotations, in galaxy clusters and in shaping the large scale structure of the Universe. On the other hand, a non-gravitational manifestation of its presence is yet to be unveiled. One of the most promising techniques is the one of indirect detection, aimed at identifying excesses in cosmic ray fluxes which could possibly be produced by DM annihilations or decays in the Milky Way halo. The current experimental efforts mainly focus in the GeV to TeV energy range, which is also where signals from WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) are expected. Focussing on charged cosmic rays, in particular antiprotons, electrons and positrons, as well as their secondary emissions, an analysis of current and forseen cosmic ray measurements and improvements on astrophysical models are presented. Antiproton data from PAMELA imposes contraints on annihilating and decaying DM which are similar to (or even slightly stronger than) the most stringent bounds from gamma ray experiments, even when kinetic energies below 10 GeV are discarded. However, choosing different sets of astrophysical parameters, in the form of propagation models and halo profiles, allows the contraints to span over one or two orders of magnitude. In order to exploit fully the power of antiprotons to constrain or discover DM, effects which were previously perceived as subleading turn out to be relevant especially for the analysis of the newly released AMS-02 data. In fact, including energy losses, diffusive reaccelleration and solar modulation can somewhat modify the current bounds, even at large DM masses. A wrong interpretation of the data may arise if they are not taken into account. Finally, using the updated proton and helium fluxes just released by the AMS-02 experiment, the astrophysical antiproton to proton ratio and its uncertainties are reevaluated and compared to the preliminarly reported AMS-02 measurements. No unambiguous evidence for a significant excess with respect to expectations is found. Yet, some preference for thicker halos and a flatter energy dependence of the diffusion coefficient starts to emerge. New stringed constraints on DM annihilation and decay are derived. Secondary emissions from electrons and positrons can also be used to constrain DM annihilation or decay in the galactic halo. The radio signal due to synchrotron radiation of electrons and positrons on the galactic magnetic field, gamma rays from bremsstrahlung processes on the galactic gas densities and from Inverse Compton scattering processes on the interstellar radiation field are considered. With several magnetic field configurations, propagation scenarios and improved gas density maps and interstellar radiation field, state-of-art tools allowing the computaion of synchrotron and bremssttrahlung radiation for any WIMP DM model are provided. All numerical results for DM are incorporated in the release of the Poor Particle Physicist Coookbook for DM Indirect Detection (PPPC4DMID). Finally, the possible GeV gamma-ray excess identified in the Fermi-LAT data from the Galactic Center in terms of DM annihilation, either in hadronic or leptonic channels is studied. In order to test this tantalizing interprestation, a multi-messenger approach is used: first, the computation of secondary emisison from DM with respect to previous works confirms it to be relevant for determining the DM spectrum in leptonic channels. Second, limits from antiprotons severely constrain the DM interpretation of the excess in the hadronic channel, for standard assumptions on the Galactic propagation parameters and solar modulation. However, they considerably relax if more conservative choices are adopted., Les preuves pour l'existence de la matière noire (MN), sous forme d'une particule inconnue qui rempli les halos galactiques, sont issues d'observations astrophysiques et cosmologiques: son effet gravitationnel est visible dans les rotations des galaxies, des amas de galaxies et dans la formation des grandes structures de l'univers. Une manifestation non-gravitationnelle de sa présence n'a pas encore été découverte. L'une des techniques les plus prometteuse est la détection indirecte de la MN, consistant à identifier des excès dans les flux de rayons cosmiques pouvant provenir de l'annihilation ou la désintégration de la MN dans le halo de la Voie Lactée. Les efforts expérimentaux actuels se focalisent principalement sur une gamme d'énergie de l'ordre du GeV au TeV, où un signal de WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) est attendu. L'analyse des mesures récentes et inédites des rayons cosmiques chargés (antiprotons, électrons et positrons) et leurs émissions secondaires et les améliorations des modèles astrophysiques sont présentées.Les données de PAMELA sur les antiprotons contraignent l'annihilation et la désintégration de la MN de manière similaire (et même légèrement meilleurs) que les contraintes les plus fortes venant des rayons gamma, même dans le cas où les énergies cinétiques inférieures à 10 GeV sont écartées. En choisissant des paramètres astrophysiques différents (modèles de propagation et profils de MN), les contraintes peuvent changer d'un à deux ordres de grandeur. Pour exploiter la totalité de la capacité des antiprotons à contraindre la MN, des effets précédemment négligés sont incorporés et se révèlent être importants dans l'analyse des données inédites de AMS-02 : ajouter les pertes d'énergie, la diffusion dans l'espace des moments et la modulation solaire peut modifier les contraintes, même à de hautes masses. Une mauvaise interprétation des données peut survenir si ces effets ne sont pas pris en compte. Avec les flux de protons et d'hélium exposé par AMS-02, le fond astrophysique et ces incertitudes du ratio antiprotons sur protons sont réévalués et comparés aux données inédites de AMS-02. Aucune indication pour un excès n'est trouvé. Une préférence pour un halo confinant plus large et une dépendance en énergie du coefficient de diffusion plus plate apparaissent. De nouvelles contraintes sur l'annihilation et la désintégration de la MN sont ainsi dérivés.Les émissions secondaires des électrons et des positrons peuvent aussi contraindre l'annihilation et la désintégration de la MN dans le halo galactique : le signal radio dû à la radiation synchrotron des électrons et positrons dans le champs magnétique galactique, les rayons gamma des processus de bremsstrahlung avec le gas galactique et de Compton Inverse avec le champs radiatif interstellaire sont considérés. Différentes configurations de champs magnétique galactique et de modèles de propagation et des cartes de gas et de champs radiatif interstellaire améliorés sont utilisées pour obtenir des outils permettant le calculs des émissions synchrotrons et bremsstrahlung venant de MN de type WIMP. Tous les résultats numériques sont incorporés dans la dernière version du Poor Particle Physicist Coookbook for DM Indirect Detection (PPPC4DMID).Une interprétation d'un possible excès dans les données de rayons gamma de Fermi-LAT au centre galactique comme étant dû à l'annihilation de MN en canaux hadronique et leptonique est analysée. Dans une approche de messagers multiples, le calcul des émissions secondaires est amélioré et se révèle être important pour la détermination du spectre pour le canal leptonique. Ensuite, les limites provenant des antiprotons sur l'annihilation en canal hadronique contraignent sévèrement l'interprétation de cet excès comme étant dû à la MN, dans le cas de paramètres de propagation et de modulation solaire standards. Avec un choix plus conservatif de ces paramètres elles s'assouplissent considérablement.

Some of the most interesting objects in the Universe are Active Galactic Nuclei. In the centre of an active galaxy is a supermassive black hole that accretes matter from the surrounding galaxy. In the process, not yet fully understood, some of the matter is ejected in two jets, perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy. The energy of the particles in the jets are extremely high, sometimes over 1019 eV. The features of an active galaxy can be very different depending on from which angle it is viewed. This means that some astronomical objects that earlier seemed to be very heterogeneous might be only different manifestations of the same type of object, namely active galactic nuclei. This thesis introduces some of these different objects. The unifying theory is described. Ways of detecting the high-energy radiation and two important instruments, H.E.S.S. and Fermi-LAT are described. Three studies of the BL Lac PKS 2155-304, an active galactic nucleus that points its jet almost straight at Earth, are made using Fermi-LAT data. The conclusion of the studies is that the source is variable at least in the time scale of days and that in order to gather further information about these objects simultaneous multi-wavelength surveys have to be done.
