At the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Mutiles campus, in San Mateo, Esmeraldas, Brachiaria Hybrid Sabia AIG-330 J was evaluated at three cutting ages (30, 60 and 90 days), using a completely randomized experimental design and statistical analysis with Fisher's test at 5%. Variables of forage potential were studied, such as cutting height, cover, green forage production and dry matter, as well as nutritional composition (dry matter, ash, protein, fiber, nitrogen free extract and ethereal extract). The results showed significant differences, highlighting greater height at 90 days (1.32 m) and greater production of green forage (77.13 ton/ha/year) and dry matter (13.13 ton/ha/year). Nutritional analysis revealed a decrease in protein content with increasing cutting age, being higher at 30 and 60 days (14.16%) and lower at 90 days (10.86%). Fiber reached its maximum at 90 days (31.50%). These findings suggest that cutting at 60 days offers an optimal balance between biomass production and nutritional value, recommending the Brachiaria Sabia AIG-330 J hybrid as an efficient forage source for this age.

HENS , *EGGS , *FIBERS - Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of açaí bran (AB) inclusion in diets for laying hens on performance, quality and sensory characteristics of the eggs. A bromatological analysis of AB (seed and peel, resulting from pulping of açaí fruit) was carried out for formulation of experimental diets, which was evaluated in terms of bird performance, quality and sensory characteristics of the eggs. The study lasted 105 days divided into five periods of 21 days. A total of 180 Hisex White laying hens (65-wks-old) were distributed in a completely randomized design with control treatment (without inclusion) and five inclusion levels (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 %) of AB in the diets with five replicates of six birds. The results of the present study indicated that is possible to include until 10% of AB in diets for laying hens with a positive effect (p<0.05) on performance and egg quality, presenting better eggs sensory characteristics. AB presents a great content of fiber, however, its inclusion above 10% caused a negative effect (p<0.05) on performance, quality and sensory characteristics of eggs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CORN , *ADDITIVES , *FEED analysis , *SILAGE , *STARCH , *BIOMASS , *CORN quality , *LACTIC acid , *LACTIC acid bacteria - Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate cutting height (CH) effects on ensiled corn without additives (C), with a lactic acid bacteria inoculant (L), a fibrolytic enzyme (F), or a mixture of both (FL), considering chemical composition and both in vitro digestibility dry matter (IVDMD) and in vitro neutral detergent fiber (IVNDFD). Corn was harvested at three different cutting heights (12, 25 or 42 cm above the soil) and ensiled with or without additives (AD). Data was analyzed according to a factorial design, with a 3 x 4 arrangement of treatments and three repeats. Dry matter content was highest in C12 and lowest in F12 (P<0.05) silages. As cutting height was higher, cell wall content was lower (P<0.05). Even considering it increased after the use of additives (P<0.05), the highest values occurred with FL silages. Crude protein was equal (P=0.05) between CH and increased (P<0.05) with AD. The highest IVDMD was observed for 42 cm CH, while IVDMD and IVNDFD were higher in C and F, but lower with FL. None of the inoculation treatments, alone or combined improved corn silage quality. In fact, FL combination decreased such quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Molasses has been culturally used as a source of soluble carbohydrates, an external input that can increase production costs, therefore, the use of other sources of these is considered, as fruit juices (pineapple and mango). Objective: To evaluate the fermentative and comparative dynamics of silage Pennisetum purpureum additive with molasses, pineapple (Ananas comosus) or mango (Manguifera indica) in different concentrations. Methods: Chopped and silaged Pennisetum purpureum cutting grass with molasses, pineapple or mango was used as sources of soluble carbohydrates in different concentrations (3, 5 and 7%) and two presentations (juice or juice plus pulp). After silage, pH, T° and humidity (24, 48, 72 and 96 hours), chemical composition, and silage palatability (30, 45 and 60 days) were evaluated. Results and Discussion: The concentration of dry matter, crude protein, fiber and pH was higher (P<0.05) in silage with juice and juice plus 5% and 7% pulp compared to those without any additives or molasses. On the other hand, there are similarities (P>0.05) between treatments on temperature and palatability. Conclusion: The use of pineapple or mango as a source of soluble carbohydrates improves the fermentative dynamics and some chemical characteristics of Pennisetum purpureum silage as crude protein, fiber and pH. However, it maintains similarities with the use of molasses, so it can be a sustainable substitute for the production of cutting grass silage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

STARCH , *MILK , *FIBERS - Abstract
The objective of this work was to evaluate the mass yield for silage, its nutritive value and the grain yield of 15 maize cultivars. The experiments were carried out in the 2022/2023 harvest, in Mococa, Tatuí and Votuporanga. There were plots of six lines of five meters, with four replications, in a randomized block design. There was interaction (p>F) between cultivars and locations for plant height (AP), dry matter yield (PMS), grain yields at ensilage (PGS) and at maturity (PGM), starch content, acid detergent fiber (FDA) and neutral detergent fiber (FDNom). It is interesting to note that the cultivar AG 8701 PRO3 showed a high potential for milk yield per hectare in the three locations, indicating its productive stability in different soil and climate conditions, while other cultivars performed differently depending on the environment. The average dry matter productivity was 20.99 t.ha-1 in Mococa, 19.06 t.ha-1 in Tatuí and 15.38 t.ha-1 in Votuporanga. The grain productivity at the time of ensiling was 8.49, 7.00 and 6.23 t.ha-1 for Mococa, Tatuí and Votuporanga, respectively, these grains being of great importance in the nutritional value of the forage, due to the presence of starch, positively influencing milk yield per ton of dry matter. The manuscript demonstrate which percentage indexes of fibrous and organic material are necessary in composting windrows, the replacement of the biocatalyst (feces) by organic sludge, with the purpose of forming an alternative quality fertilizer. Individual windrows were designed with different compositions based on 10 calculations of different proportions. The three different materials used in the composting process for each treatment (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 with animal feces as biocatalyst, and T6, T7, T8, T9 and T10, with sludge as biocatalyst). Each treatment consisted of 1kg of material with the following proportions: T1 - 70% of fibrous material and 30% of organic material; T2 - 50% fibrous material and 50% organic material; T3 - 30% fibrous material and 70% organic material; T4 - 10% fibrous material and 90% organic material; T5 - 0% of fibrous material and 100% of organic material, where the following parameters of the organic fertilizers generated were analyzed: physical - granulometry; density and porosity, chemical - Organic Matter; pH; P; K; Ca; Mg; At; SB; Al; H and CTC. All treatments are within the classification range of soil with weak acidity, since the pH and OM content were between 7.01 and 10.8% respectively. Thus, even with the variation of the organic biocatalysts used, the indices and required levels of the physicochemical parameters analyzed, of all treatments, regardless of the fiber content, were above the references expressed in the literature, demonstrating a high quality in the fertilizers produced. Background: Digestibility of fiber in the rumen is not due to enzymatic activity of individual bacteria, but rather to their interaction, which complements their enzymatic functioning. Thus, efficiency of fiber digestion depends on the diversity and density of cellulolytic bacteria. Objective: To estimate in vitro production of biogas, methane, and fermentative characteristics of cobra grass (Brachiaria hibrido) inoculated with ruminal bacteria (RB) in coculture with isolated cellulolytic bacteria (ICB) from bovine (ICBbov) or water buffalo (ICBbuf). Methods: ICBbov and ICBbuf were isolated from ruminal cellulolytic bacteria consortia using specific culture media for cellulolytic bacteria. Both were morphologically characterized and a Gram stain was performed. In the in vitro gas production test, the substrate was cobra grass and the inocula were ruminal bacteria (RB), ICBbov, ICBbuf, Coculturebov (RB + ICBbov) and Coculturebuf (RB + ICBbuf). Biogas and methane (CH4) production, as well as dry matter degradation (DMD) and neutral detergent fiber degradation (NDFD) were measured. A completely randomized design was used. Results: The ICB obtained were Gram positive cocci. Accumulated biogas production at 72 h from ICBbov and ICBbuf was on average 42.11% of that produced by RB. The Coculturebov produced 14.24% more biogas than RB. The CH4 production was lower in ICBbov and ICBbuf than in RB, Coculturebov and Coculturebuf. The DMD and NDFD were not different among RB, Coculturebov and Coculturebuf. The ICBbov degraded 37.10 and 96.34% more DMD and NDFD than ICBbuf (p<0.05). Conclusion: The use of ICB from bovine or water buffalo in coculture with RB does not improve in vitro production of biogas, DMD or NDFD with respect to RB alone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The abaca also known as cañamo of manila, produces a natural fiber that is known as the most resistant worldwide natural fiber, that has properties like resistance to salinity, mechanical strength, flexibility, and durability. The unique characteristics of fiber have caused an increase in its use in many industries. However, the cultivation of abaca is threatened by the presence of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, one of the most important diseases which has been considered the most lethal, due to the scarcity of existing control methods. The article aims to highlight recent data about the characteristics of the plant and its fiber, crop management, productivity, and the market as an approach updating the current knowledge regarding the abaca. It was found that some characteristics of abaca fiber such as strength and physical properties depend on the position of its leaves, on the maturity of the plant, and also on the fiber extraction system. Regarding fiber extraction, it is mentioned that there are two types of methods (stripping and decortication). Concerning productivity, there exists a considerable difference between the ways of bundle extraction, for instance, the hand stripping technique produces about 20 kg of fiber bundles per day. It is concluded that abaca has great potential as a crop that could boost the markets of various countries. Though the information available on this crop is scarce, it is necessary to increase research about its production and management to promote greater use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cellulose synthase is a superfamily where genes involved in the synthesis of the primary and secondary cell wall and their relationship with plant fibers have been reported. In recent years, vegetable fiber has been the subject of considerable interest, due to its quality and the ability to be biodegradable, and it has been reported that the cellulose content is related to the quality of the fiber. Objective: To determine the relationship of CesA genes with fiber content in Agave fourcroydes Lem. Methodology: The relative expression of the CesA3, CesA4 and CesA5 genes involved in the primary and secondary cell wall will be prolonged and their relationship with fiber content will be evaluated in plants of different heights in a henequen plantation. The content of the fiber components was evaluated using the TAPPI methods and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, the means were compared using the Tukey test (p≤ 0.05). Results: Plants with greater height, have longer leaves, with higher cellulose content (48%) and low content of hemicellulose (3%) and lignin (8%), these characteristics are related to high levels of relative expression of the CesA3 and CesA4 genes and low relative expression level of the CesA5 gene. Implications: A direct connection of higher expression of CesA3 and CesA4 genes with the length of the leaves, the height of the plant and the cellulose content is presented. Conclusions: In this research, the exploration between the expression and the length of the leaves serves as a basis for future research focused on the early selection of individuals with high cellulose content, which through plant tissue culture represents an option for genetic improvement for the benefit of crop producers.

Introduction: Opossums, Didelphis marsupialis, are wild mammals of wide distribution and abundance in Colombia. This species has a relevant ecological function for ecosystems, as they are seed dispersers, forest regenerators, and pest controllers. Opossums are nocturnal, omnivorous, opportunistic, and they are the species that most enter the CAVR (Wildlife Care, Assessment and Rehabilitation Center). Objective: This work carried out at the CAVR of the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley (AMVA) seeks, through observation and data collection, to implement the zootechnical aspects associated with the feeding and nutrition of this species, such as their feeding behavior, energy requirements, digestive physiology and the formulation of diets. Methods: At the CAVR, they feed on fruits and meat, although through a cafeteria test, we aim to include more fibrous and palatable foods to resemble their diet to the one they have in the wild. Results and Discussion: The vegetables with the highest acceptance are chard and spinach (P>0.05), with 71% and 73% respectively; in addition, the inclusion of different fibrous foods in the diet allows the contribution of this nutrient to increase from 1.47% to 11.58% on average. Conclusion: This species, like many marsupials, is efficient in the use of energy; the food they are currently fed at the CAVR meets their nutritional requirements, which allows them to express adequate growth and development. - Abstract
Introduction: Over the last years, the impact of food systems on human and planetary health has been appointed. The transition towards more sustainable and healthier diets is postulated as an urgent measure to address the increasing environmental and health concerns related to the current food production and consumption systems. This work reviews recent developments to integrate sustainability into dietary recommendations and food-based dietary guidelines, recognising the role of cereals as the basis for healthy sustainable dietary patterns. It is worth noting that a change in current eating patterns, to achieve greater adherence to existing official dietary guidelines, is proposed as a more realistic and feasible goal to improve the environmental and health impact of food systems. In this context, cereals play a key role as fundamental pillar of healthy and sustainable dietary patterns, due to their energy and nutrient contribution to human diet worldwide, and the different health benefits associated with an adequate intake of grain fibre and wholegrains. - Abstract
The construction industry is one of the sectors with the greatest environmental impact. The production of concrete requires large amounts of energy and generates high CO₂ emissions, contributing to climate change in great magnitude. The main objective of this work was to develop a self-repairable cell concrete tile, inoculated with the Bacillus subtilis bacteria, reinforced with fibers, in order to reduce the need for maintenance and, therefore, a lower production of new material for the repair of structures over time. Due to its design, several trials were carried out, the results of which determined the final focus of the study. First, a trial was carried out to determine the dose of foaming agent necessary to obtain the desired porosity in the concrete matrix. Viability tests of Bacillus subtilis were also carried out in the extremely alkaline environment of a cement solution. The trials carried out did not offer the desired results; the doses of foaming agent did not provide the desired porosity within the concrete matrix, so we discarded the hypothesis of making the concrete tile cells. On the other hand, the high pH of cement inhibited bacterial viability over a week of inoculation. As a result, a trial was carried out to reduce the pH of the cement by adding silicon smoke and, at the same time, the viability of Bacillus subtilis at various pHs was verified. From these last trials it was determined that silicon smoke was not enough to alter pH, although bacteria were viable at pH of 9 and 10. After obtaining the unexpected results, the initial hypothesis was reformulated, so the main objective of the work was the elaboration of a self-repairing gypsum tile reinforced with fiber. This change in the matrix's raw material was due to the neutrality of the pH of the gypsum, which does allow the development and metabolic activity of Bacillus subtilis, which was tested through feasibility trials of the bacterium in a gypsum solution. - Abstract

To do this, three earth walls will be manufactured, using different construction techniques such as wall and masonry. In addition, plant fiber reinforcement will be applied to two of them, to verify its effectiveness. Subsequently, a test will be carried out simulating an earthquake and various data will be obtained, which will be processed in order to obtain the different mechanical properties necessary to carry out an analysis on the effectiveness of implementing earth as a construction material.

Objective. To evaluate the potentiality of the microbial consortium Curvularia kusanoi L7- Trichoderma pleuroticola as biological pretreatment of high fiber sources destined for animal production. Materials and methods. The Strains used where Curvularia kusanoi L7 and Trichoderma pleuroticola. The degradative potential was evaluated through the production kinetics of cellulolytic (endo-1,4-β- glucanase and exo-1,4-β-glucanase) and ligninolytics enzymes (laccase and peroxidase) in solid submerged fermentation of bran wheat and sugarcane bagasse. The growth of the co culture in plates was analyzed. The effect of the consortium on the carbon mineralization of raw wheat straw was determined and the degree of fiber degradation was evaluated by infrared spectroscopy (IR). Resulted. Both strains showed high cellulolytic production. Only C. kusanoi L7 showed ligninolytic activity, with a maximum laccase activity of 1400 U/L. No antagonism was found between the strains and the results of carbon mineralization and evaluation of their final products by IR indicate the effectiveness of the consortium to degrade the cell wall more efficiently than each of the strains individually. Conclusions. It is concluded that the microbial consortium C. kusanoi L7-T. pleuroticola has great potential for structural modification of fibrous sources destined for animal feeding.
