The coevolutionary dynamic of host–parasite associations varies from strictly local adaptations to diffuse guild coevolution. How innate and acquired immune responses modulate host resistance to parasitism and how host specificity and geographic scaling affect the efficacy of host response have consequences for range dynamics and biological invasions. Using reciprocal transplant experiments, we tested whether local or diffuse coevolution shapes host response to parasitism in the host–parasite association between bitterling fishes and larval stages (glochidia) of freshwater mussels from Europe and East Asia. We found that glochidia initially indiscriminately attached to all study host species, but immune responses elicited significant differences in host responses within 24 h of infection, which intensified during glochidial development. European bitterlings were more resistant to European glochidia and Asian bitterlings to Asian glochidia, with the strongest geographic bias in resistance in the Asian bitterling hosts. This finding suggests a strong effect of local adaptation but also indicates the non‐negligible role of coevolutionary hotspots. Low natural glochidia load on bitterling species overall hence arise from competent immune response rather than glochidia avoidance behaviour. Bitterling immune response is primarily innate and not acquired. Overall, our data demonstrate the complex outcome of parasite pressure on the evolution of host resistance, and important role of geographically structured coevolution in shaping host response. Rampant industrialization has led to widespread reliance on hydrocarbon polymers for various commercial applications. While these synthetic polymers, commonly known as plastics, degrade in slowly in the environments, the toxic effects of their micro-sized particles remain underexplored. In this study, we synthesized polyisobutylene (PIB) microparticles in the lab and evaluated their toxicity and accumulation in a zebrafish model. Pristine and fluorescent PIB-microplastics (MPs), with particle sizes ranging from 2 to 10 μm, were synthesized using the solvent evaporation method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the stability of the suspensions. Zebrafish larvae exposed to various concentrations of PIB-MPs exhibited numerous morphological and molecular changes, including delayed hatching, impaired swimming behavior, increased reactive oxygen species levels, altered mRNA levels of genes encoding antioxidant proteins, and reduced survival rates. Dissections revealed PIB-MP accumulation in the guts of larvae and adult fish within 7–21 days, causing damage to the intestinal mucosa. Identification of fish larvae based on morphology is typically limited to higher taxonomic ranks (e.g., family or order), as larvae possess few morphological diagnostic characters for precise discrimination to species. When many samples are presented at any one time, the use of morphology to identify such specimens can be laborious and time‐consuming. Using a reverse workflow for specimen sorting and identification leveraging high‐throughput DNA sequencing, thousands of fish larvae can be DNA barcoded and sorted into molecular operational taxonomic units (mOTUs) in a single sequencing run with the nanopore sequencing technology (e.g., MinION). This process reduces the time and financial costs of morphology‐based sorting and instead deploys experienced taxonomists for species taxonomic work where they are needed most. In this study, a total of 3022 fish larval specimens from plankton tows across four sites in Singapore were collected and sorted based on this workflow. Eye tissue from individual samples was used for DNA extraction and sequencing of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I. We generated a total of 2746 barcodes after quality filtering (90.9% barcoding success), identified 2067 DNA barcodes (75.3% identification success), and delimited 256 mOTUs (146 genera, 52 families). Our analyses identified specific challenges to species assignment, such as the potential misidentification of publicly available sequences used as reference barcodes. We highlighted how the conservative application and comparison of a local sequence database can help resolve identification conflicts. Overall, this proposed approach enables and expedites taxonomic identification of fish larvae, contributing to the enhancement of reference barcode databases and potentially better understanding of fish connectivity. Diets of fish larvae may vary within populations and among species and are affected by larval prey availability and foraging capacity. We aimed to describe the diet of fish larvae based on empirical field observations, emphasizing the interaction and organization of the predator–prey network using Auchenipterus osteomystax as a species model. The network showed few interactions (low connectance and modularity) but a nested structure (some items that had fewer records tended to occur together with the most frequent ones), low complementary specialization (the proportions of ingested items tended to be equivalent) and a pattern of segregation (some items tended not to be consumed together) in the use of resources among individuals. Robustness was low when the removal of prey with a higher consumption frequency occurred. The correlation between morphological variables and network attributes was significant and positive for abundance and strength, while the correlation with nested rank was negative. The availability of suitable dietary resources is likely to be the key factor for success and survival in the early stages of development. With changes in morphology during larval development, A. osteomystax showed a generalist position in the network as its predation capacity increased. A new approach to trophic ecology studies of fish larvae incorporating network analysis may help explain the individual characteristics of larvae and assess the pattern of interactions in the population. Ichthyoplankton monitoring is crucial for stock assessments, offering insights into spawning grounds, stock size, seasons, recruitment, and changes in regional ichthyofauna. This study evaluates the efficiency of multi-marker DNA metabarcoding using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA gene markers, in comparison to morphology-based methods for fish species identification in ichthyoplankton samples. Two transects with four coastal distance categories were sampled along the southern coast of Portugal, being each sample divided for molecular and morphological analyses. A total of 76 fish species were identified by both approaches, with DNA metabarcoding overperforming morphology—75 versus 11 species-level identifications. Linking species-level DNA identifications with higher taxonomic morphological identifications resolved several uncertainties associated with traditional methods. Multi-marker DNA metabarcoding improved fish species detection by 20–36% compared to using a single marker/amplicon, and identified 38 species in common, reinforcing the validity of our results. PERMANOVA analysis revealed significant differences in species communities based on the primer set employed, transect location, and distance from the coast. Our findings underscore the potential of DNA metabarcoding to assess ichthyoplankton diversity and suggest that its integration into routine surveys could enhance the accuracy and comprehensiveness of fish stock assessments. Triploidization influences various biological characteristics of fish, which is associated with reductions in the number of multiple cell types in different tissues/organs. Our behavioral analyses revealed that triploid Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) larvae exhibit lower sensitivity to light compared to diploids. Furthermore, histological analyses revealed a reduction in the number of ganglion cells and an increase in their size in the retinas of triploid T. orientalis larvae. Computing Lagrangian trajectories with ocean circulation models is a powerful way to infer larval dispersal pathways and connectivity. Defining release areas and timing of particles to represent larval habitat realistically is critical to obtaining representative dispersal pathways. However, it is challenging due to spatial and temporal variability in larval density. Forward-tracking particle experiments were conducted to study larval connectivity of four species (neritic or mesopelagic) in the Gulf of Mexico's (GoM) deep-water region. A seasonal climatology coupled with predicted potential larval habitat models based on generalized additive models was used to delimit the particle dispersal origin. Two contrasting mesoscale circulation patterns were examined: (1) high Loop Current (LC) intrusion, absence of recently detached LC anticyclonic eddies (LC-ACE), and no interaction between LC-ACEs and the semi-permanent cyclonic eddy (CE) in the Bay of Campeche (BoC), and (2) limited LC intrusion, a recently detached LC-ACE, and interaction between LC-ACEs and the BoC's CE. To simulate larval transport, virtual larvae were randomly released in the potential habitats and advected for 30 days with the velocity fields of the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model with hourly-resolution assimilation. Potential habitat location and size played a major role in dispersal and connectivity. A greater percentage of particles were retained in potential habitats restricted to the southern BoC, suggesting lower connectivity with other GoM regions than those encompassing most of the BoC or the central Gulf. Mesoscale feature interactions in the western GoM and BoC led to greater dispersion along the western basin. By contrast, the absence of ACE-CE interaction in the BoC led to greater retention and less connectivity between the southern and northern GoM. Under high LC intrusion, particles seeded north of the Yucatan Shelf were advected through the Florida Straits and dispersed within the GoM. One of the most persistent challenges in walleye larviculture is the high rate of unobserved mortality occurring within the first 30 days post-hatch. Walleye larviculture is characterized by high mortality rates, but oftentimes, only a fraction of the total mortality in walleye larviculture is observed. Unobserved mortality is frequently attributed to a high rate of cannibalism, but decomposition of larvae and other factors may also be important contributors. Unobserved mortality can make walleye larviculture especially challenging as accurately estimating daily feed rations and forecasting larval production rely on accurate counts of surviving fish. Despite the importance of unobserved mortality, there is little empirical evidence available that assesses the temporal occurrence and causes of unobserved mortality in walleye larviculture. This study assessed when unobserved mortality occurs during walleye larviculture by examining survival at three timepoints (8, 15, and 30 days post-stocking). Tanks were cleaned daily and dead fry were enumerated to account for observed mortality. At the end of each treatment period, the tanks were drained, all remaining fry were enumerated, and the unobserved mortality rate was calculated. While observed mortality trended higher as trial duration increased, unobserved mortality did not increase significantly from the 8-day treatment suggesting that the bulk of unobserved mortality occurs during the first 8 days of walleye larviculture. High larval and frymortality has been amajor challenge to the commercial culture of the African bony-tongue (Heterotis niloticus). Research indicates inadequate feeding to be a possible cause of the high mortality rates of larvae/fry grown in captivity. An experiment was conducted to first describe the developmental stages of H. niloticus eggs and larvae until schooling, 6 days after hatching (DAH), at 26°C. The morphological development, survival, growth (weight gain and length), and swimming behavior of the larvae were monitored. A follow-up feeding trial was conducted with H. niloticus fry from 6 to 27 DAH involving four treatments: feeding with Artemia nauplii; a combined feed of 50% Artemia nauplii and 50% rotifers (w/w); feeding with rotifers; and no feeding. The activities of three digestive enzymes (trypsin, lipase, and amylase)were assessed in fry exposed to the live feed treatments. At hatching, the larvae had a large, vascularized yolk sac filled with yolk platelets, which occupied approximately one-third of the total body length of the abdominal cavity. Yolk platelet reabsorption started at 1 DAH and was complete at 6 DAH. Metamorphosis was completed at 6 DAH, and schooling behavior was observed. For the feeding trial, the fry that received Artemia nauplii underwent the fastest development until 27 DAH. Similarly, the survival rate was considerably higher in fry fed with Artemia nauplii than in those that received a combination of Artemia nauplii and rotifers or only rotifers. Overall, the survival rates for fry fed with Artemia nauplii and larvae co-fed were 72.7% ± 0.9% and 41.2% ± 3.3%, respectively. Fry did not survive until 27 DAH in the rotifer-fed and unfed treatment groups. Digestive enzyme activity differed significantly (p< 0.05) between treatments and sampling dates. All digestive enzymes were detectable at the onset of mouth opening (5 DAH) and fluctuated through the 7 and 9 DAH. Lower enzyme activity was observed when the fry were subjected to starvation or the rotifer treatment. Introduction: The availability of high-quality gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) larvae in larviculture represents a major bottleneck to the aquaculture. This challenge can be compounded by losses resulting from the emergence of a clinical disorder's symptomatology. In this study, the observed syndrome included a rotated positioning of the larval sagittal plane and in most cases leading eventually to death. Methods: Herein, we examined using amplicon sequencing of the 16S rDNA the bacterial communities associated with S. aurata larvae at different conditions (including both fish with no evidence of the syndrome and fish with syndrome) during the early developmental stages along with the contribution of rearing water, organic matter and provided feed in the microbiota during an experiment of 18 days. Results: Over the development of larvae, differences were observed in the bacterial composition between healthy and symptomatic larvae as well as between components of the system. A remarkable presence of members of the Psychrobacter genus was observed in symptomatic larvaewith a significant increase at 18dph. The healthy larvae harbor different bacterial profile with a dominance of Vibrio and Bacillus genera during 3-8dph, various members of Alphaproteobacteria during 11-14dph and Marinifilum at 18dph. The rearing water showed a different bacterial profile compared to the other components, with a slight effect of healthy larvae at 3-8dph. The bacteriome of feeds provided during the rearing of larvae was found to be diverse. Chlorella was mainly dominated by members of Firmicutes, while Rotifer and Artemia were mainly dominated bymembers of Proteobacteria including different species of Psychrobacter. At 18dph, Artemia feed seems to affect the symptomatic larvae bacteriome, where it enhanced the presence of Psychrobacter spp. Discussion: Interestingly, the comparative network analysis at 18dph indicated that the bacterial associations in symptomatic larvae were primarily driven by members of the Psychrobacter genus. While various phyla contributed to bacterial associations in healthy larvae with different frequencies including mainly members of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota and Firmicutes phyla. Finally, the Gammaproteobacteria/Alphaproteobacteria ratio was found to be related to the health condition of larvae. Largemouth bass is one of the most important freshwater aquaculture species in China. However, the mechanisms underlying the development of skeleton in the teleosts are not fully comprehensive. In a previous study in our laboratory, it was found that the addition of phospholipids to the diet significantly reduced the malformation rate of largemouth bass larvae. The malformation rate decreased from 91.29 ± 1.05% in the fish fed phospholipid-deficient diet (SP_L) to 11.99 ± 1.19% in the fish fed with diet including 8% phospholipids (SP_H). Therefore, high-throughput RNA-Seq was used to compare the transcriptome of largemouth bass larvae between SP_H and SP_L. Thirty whole body samples originated from 3 tanks in 8% phospholipids inclusion group and 3 tanks in no phospholipids inclusion group were used to reduce inaccuracies. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses revealed that the differentially expressed genes were involved in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, phosphatidylinositol signaling system, glycosphingolipid biosynthesis-lacto and neolacto series, and fatty acid degradation. Among the 584 differentially expressed genes, we paid attention to 6 genes known to be involved in skeletal development. Twist-related protein 2 (twist2) and dishevelled-associated activator of morphogenesis 1 (daam1), two genes related to osteoblast development, were up-regulated in SP_H. Bone gamma-carboxyglutamate (gla) protein (bglap), gene associated with the skeletal development and osteohormatology, was also up-regulated in SP_H. Procollagen C-endopeptidase enhancer b (pcolce b), a gene related to the development of gristle, was up-regulated in SP_H. Higher expression of secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein 1 and 7 (scpp1 and scpp7) in SP_H suggests the stimulation of process related with tooth and bone development. The trend changes of the above genes all indicated that the lack of phospholipids might affect the skeletal development through the regulation of the expression of genes involved in several biological processes related to bone formation. In summary, those results provided valuable information about the reduction of deformity rates in largemouth bass and contributed to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms and regulative pathways regulating skeletal growth in larval carnivorous fish. Return rates of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the sea to European rivers have declined in recent decades. The first months at sea are critical for growth and survival; recent evidence suggests that reduced food availability may be a contributory factor to the observed declines. Here, zooplankton abundance data are used to derive a measure of prey energy available to forage fish prey of salmon during early marine migration. This zooplankton prey energy has significantly and dramatically declined over much of the northeast Atlantic, and specifically within key salmon migration domains, over the past 60 years. Marine return rates from a set of southern European populations are found to exhibit clustering not entirely predictable from geographical proximity. Variability in grouped return rates from these populations is correlated with zooplankton energy on a range of scales, demonstrating the potential use of zooplankton energy as an indicator of salmon marine survival. Comparison with environmental variables derived from ocean model reanalysis data suggests zooplankton energy is regulated by a combination of climate change impacts on ecosystem productivity and multi-decadal variability in water mass influence along the migration routes. The article presents the species diversity, abundance, and distribution features of ichthyoplankton and fodder zooplankton in the northern Black Sea in summer 2021. The intensification of cyclonic activity over the Black Sea in June–July slowed the formation of summer-type thermal stratification in the studied water area. At the beginning of July, only 13 species of eggs and fish larvae were observed in ichthyoplankton of the Crimean Peninsula, and their average abundance was 29 and 2 ind./m2, respectively. At the beginning of August, summer-type vertical thermal stratification off the coast of the Caucasus had already formed. The number of ichthyoplankton species increased to 20. Activation of atmospheric processes in June–July intensified the intraseasonal wind "pumping" of the upper layer of the sea. The Black Sea Rim Current transformed into a pronounced jet over the continental slope, oriented alongshore, partially extending to the shelf. This did not affect the spawning activity of mass fish species. The average abundance of eggs in the shelf and deep-water zone was about 160 ind./m2, and the average abundance of larvae on the shelf was almost five times higher, 452 ind./m2. Simple Summary: This study was carried out to examine how different diets with vitamin solutions/vitamin premixes and plant oils (algae and fungi oils) affect the reproduction of Pangasius catfish broodstock, growth performance, and survival rates of fish larvae and fingerling. The experiment was designed as a factorial setup, with Pangasius catfish broodstock fed six different diets in triplicate groups of ten fish (three males and seven females) cultured in separate hapa nets in an the earthen pond for about two months. Results showed significant differences among the six tested diets. Diets containing 35% CP, supplemented with 0.6% vitamin solutions and 1.26% algal oil, produced the best results in terms of the highest growth performance, reproductive indices, and fingerling survival rates. These findings provide valuable information for Pangasius catfish farmers and the fish production industries in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. This study evaluates the effect of different diets supplemented with vitamin solutions on Pangasius catfish broodstock reproduction, growth performances, and the survival rates of fish larvae and fingerling. The growth and reproductive performances of breeders fed with different test diets showed significant differences among the six tested diets (p < 0.05). The highest final body weight (FBW), weight gain (WG), daily weight gain (DWG), specific growth rate (SGR) of broodstock, and survival rate of Pangasius fingerlings were found in Treatment 5, which contained 0.6% H-OVN mixed with 12.6% algal oil, and Treatment 3, which contained 0.6% vitamin premix H-OVN. The average gonadosomatic index (GSI), relative fecundity index (RFI), fertilized eggs, hatching rates of eggs, and survival rate of fingerlings was 9.1 ± 2.8 (6.7–12.8%), 133,224 ± 39,090 (104,267–199,512 eggs/kg), 77.9 ± 22.2 (62.2–93.6%), and 45.3 ± 17.4 (22.0–66.3%), respectively. The findings of this study showed that the diet containing 35% CP contents supplemented with 0.6% vitamin premix H-OVN mixed with algal oils showed the highest results in terms of growth, reproductive performance indices, and survival rates of Pangasius catfish fingerlings. The antidepressant venlafaxine, a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, is commonly prescribed to treat major depressive disorder and is found at high concentrations in the aquatic environment. Concerns have been raised related to the health of aquatic organisms in response to this nontargeted pharmaceutical exposure. For instance, we previously demonstrated that exposure to venlafaxine perturbs neurodevelopment, leading to behavioural alterations in zebrafish (Danio rerio). We also observed disruption in serotonin expression in the pineal and raphe, regions critical in regulating circadian rhythms, leading us to hypothesize that zygotic exposure to venlafaxine disrupts the circadian locomotor rhythm in larval zebrafish. To test this, we microinjected zebrafish embryos with venlafaxine (1 or 10 ng) and recorded the locomotor activity in 5‐day‐old larvae over a 24‐h period. Venlafaxine deposition reduced larval locomotor activity during the light phase, but not during the dark phase of the diurnal cycle. The melatonin levels were higher in the dark compared to during the light photoperiod and this was not affected by embryonic venlafaxine deposition. Venlafaxine exposure also did not affect the transcript abundance of clock genes, including clock1a, bmal2, cry1a and per2, which showed a clear day/night rhythmicity. A notable finding was that exposure to luzindole, a melatonin receptor antagonist, decreased the locomotor activity in the control group in light, whereas the activity was higher in larvae raised from the venlafaxine‐deposited embryos. Overall, zygotic exposure to venlafaxine disrupts the locomotor activity of larval zebrafish fish during the day, demonstrating the capacity of antidepressants to disrupt the circadian rhythms in behaviour. Our results suggest that disruption in melatonin signalling may be playing a role in the venlafaxine impact on circadian behaviour, but further investigation is required to elucidate the possible mechanisms in larval zebrafish. Elucidating physical transport phenologies in large lakes can aid understanding of larval recruitment dynamics. Here, we integrate a series of climate, hydrodynamic, biogeochemical, and Lagrangian particle dispersion models to: (1) simulate hatch and transport of fish larvae throughout an illustrative large lake, (2) evaluate patterns of historic and potential future climate‐induced larval transport, and (3) consider consequences for overlap with suitable temperatures and prey. Simulations demonstrate that relative offshore transport increases seasonally, with shifts toward offshore transport occurring earlier during relatively warm historic and future simulations. Intra‐ and inter‐annual trends in transport were robust to assumed pelagic larval duration and precise location and timing of hatching. Larvae retained nearshore generally encountered more favorable temperatures and zooplankton densities compared to larvae transported offshore. Larval exploitation of nearshore resources under climate change may depend on a concomitant shift to earlier spawning and hatch times in advance of earlier offshore transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Larvae of chironomids are benthic organisms, having the extreme capability to adapt to the changing physicochemical parameters of the aquatic body and the potentiality to accommodate that adverse situation. In spite of the demand for chironomid larvae as fish food, no proper technique of chironomid farming has been reported till today. This instance encourages the research on farming these larvae, in both open and captive settings. The present research shows a good result all over the year, with seasonal variance along with changing physicochemical parameters. This farming is based on minimal space requirements, reuse of condensate water, and the application of a low‐cost diet, resulting in enormous production of this insect. Thus, it can be placed as a small‐scale industry to uplift the economic status of rural people. Introduction: A sustainable fishery relies on consistent and substantial recruitment. There is, however, considerably high mortality among fish larvae during their early development. One of the most important factors determining larval survival is foraging success. Bigeye tuna is among the most important commercial species in the Indian Ocean. Despite being routinely researched and assessed, it remains unclear how food availability affects the recruitment success of bigeye tuna. Methods: In this study, we used phytoplankton size (MD50) as an indicator of prey availability and investigated the connection betweenMD50 and bigeye tuna recruitment from 2000 to 2018 through the Beverton-Holt stock-recruitment function. The Indian Ocean was divided into four regions to accommodate spatial differences. Results: As a result, larger MD50 could bring higher recruitment, particularly in the eastern and southern Indian Ocean. Based on the analysis, we inferred that for bigeye tuna, the eastern Indian Ocean is the primary spawning ground, and the peak spawning period falls in Season 2 (April-June). Microplastics and heavy metal pollution frequently co-occur in the marine environment, raising concerns about their potentially harmful impacts on marine fish. This study undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the individual and combined stress effects of polylactide microplastics (PLA-MPs) and chromium (Cr) on marine medaka larvae. Following a 14-day exposure to PLA-MPs (100 μg/L) and Cr (50 μg/L), both individually and in combination, significant increases in heart rate and body length were observed. Notably, the combined exposure to PLA-MPs and Cr caused marked histopathological alterations, including shedding, atrophy, and lysis of the intestinal tissues. Furthermore, both individual and combined exposure induced oxidative stress in fish larvae, leading to changes in various enzyme activity indices. Individual exposure to either PLA-MPs or Cr led to anxious behavior in the larvae, whereas combined exposure not only caused anxious behavior but also altered swimming patterns. This study examined the abundance, biodiversity, and assemblage structure of larval fish inside and outside the restricted fishing zone of the Wang-an light fishery, which is located off Penghu, Taiwan. A total of 97 taxa belonging to 48 families of larval fish were identified through plankton tows conducted during the present investigation. Upeneus japonicus from the Mullidae family emerged as the dominant species in the surveyed area. Diurnal variation in larval fish abundance was evident, with higher abundance observed at night-time than during daytime. However, no significant difference was observed between the larval fish abundance inside and outside the restricted zone. Moreover, fish egg abundance and larval fish biodiversity did not exhibit notable differences between sampling locations or times. Cluster analysis revealed the presence of two groups of seasonal species. The major species in the spring group were Abudefduf vaigiensis and Pomacentrus coelestis, which prefer a low-temperature environment. The major species in the summer group was U. japonicus, which prefers a high-temperature environment. The seasonal succession of water masses under the influence of monsoon activity likely contributed to the observed grouping patterns of larval fish assemblages in the study area. These patterns were closely linked to the marine environmental conditions in this area. This research explored the influence of seasonal and environmental variables on the variation and density of ichthyoplankton in the Thermaikos Gulf and the adjacent marine protected area of the Litochoro artificial reef in Pieria, northern Greece. The objective was to assess the condition of existing ichthyoplankton communities, understand their relationship with seasonal environmental parameters, and ascertain whether the area plays the role of a fish nursery site. Observations were carried out on the boundary of the marine protected area near Litochoro, with collection sessions occurring during the spring, summer, and fall seasons from 2018 to 2021. Ichthyoplankton was collected using a bongo net sampler across 16 stations, identifying seventy larval fish species. Measurements of physico-chemical parameters were taken as well as community and population metrics such as species abundances. In the Litochoro area, the interplay between environmental conditions and the dynamics of ichthyoplankton species highlights significant ecological trends. Notably, commercially important species such as Engraulis encrasicholus (anchovy) and Sardina pilchardus (sardine) exhibited peaks in abundances, with anchovies reaching up to 544/10 m2 in May 2021 and sardines peaking at 383/10 m2 in April 2020. These species are crucial both ecologically, as integral components of the marine food web, and economically, serving as primary targets in local fisheries. Spearman analysis showed some species like anchovy having a negative trend with chl-a values. Also, diversity indices had strong negative correlations with chl-a values, suggesting that higher chl-a concentrations might be associated with lower biodiversity whereas most diversity indices, apart from Pielou's normality index (J) and Simpson's diversity index (1–lambda), showed a significant positive correlation with surface salinity. In order to investigate the reproductive dynamics of the ichthyofauna in the Brazilian Pantanal, this study examines the spatial and temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton, taxonomic composition, and its correlation with environmental factors within one of the most important sub‐basins, the Taquari River. Egg and larvae collections were conducted at 11 sampling points between October and March of 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. Significant differences were observed between collection points, months, and years, with higher ichthyoplankton densities in the Coxim and Taquari rivers, particularly between November and January. Twenty‐eight genera and/or species of fish were identified, including 10 long‐distance migratory species. Egg density showed a negative correlation with water temperature and rainfall. For larvae, water transparency and rainfall were both significant, negatively influencing larval abundance. However, different species tend to occur in environments with distinct abiotic qualities. Yolk‐sac, preflexion, and flexion larval development stages were distributed throughout the sub‐basin, especially near the Pantanal. Considering the data and analyses presented in this study, the importance of connectivity between these environments, specifically between the plateau and Pantanal, is evident, highlighting the significance of the entire sub‐basin for fish reproductive processes. Therefore, research focusing on the ecological processes influencing the distribution of ichthyoplankton offers valuable insights for ecosystem conservation and aids in effective environmental management. The concept of a standardized reference diet (SRD) is used in laboratory model organisms to ensure nutritional control between studies and laboratories. Although models using the genetically identical, all female parthenogenetic marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) are growing in popularity, research into nutrition in this species still has many knowledge gaps. To fast track the development of a SRD in terms of protein and amino acids (SRDprotein) for this species, we first analyzed the composition of its body amino acids to determine the ideal protein concept (IPC) of indispensable amino acids in wild-caught P. virginalis (which had an unusually high preponderance of leucine and arginine). Then, we strategically evaluated three common clusters of types of fish feed: (1) ornamental fish feed (SER) fortified with a naturally occurring alga (Spirulina). This type of feed was protein-high in arginine and leucine (SER + SPI) that fulfils the species' IPC for iso-protein (~ 40%), iso-phosphorus (~ 0.8%) and near iso-energetic (~ 475 kcal 100 g−1); (2) freeze-dried live feed consisting of chironomid larvae (CHI) fortified with Spirulina (CHI + SPI) that fulfils the IPC for iso-protein (~ 46%), iso-phosphorus (~ 0.7%) and near iso-energetic (~ 405 kcal 100 g−1); and (3) a commercially standardized 'starter diet' for carnivorous fish larvae (FISH) and post-larval shrimps (SHRIMP) with iso-protein (~ 56%) and iso-phosphorus (~ 1.6%). A total of six diets, embracing a diverse range of proteinaceous feeds, were used in a 100-day ad libitum feeding and growth trial. The FISH group outperformed all the other groups (p < 0.05) and our exploratory multivariate analysis revealed an ideal demand of > 44% protein (tailored to deliver high arginine 3% and leucine 4%, followed by the usual lysine > 3.5% and methionine 1.2%) but also the lowest carbohydrate level (21%). For SRDprotein, our findings show that the FISH diet is ideal and suggest the possibilities of using a CHI + SPI diet for further optimization (more economic use of protein and phosphorus). Atmospheric CO2 and temperature are rising concurrently, and may have profound impacts on the transcriptional, physiological and behavioural responses of aquatic organisms. Further, spring snowmelt may cause transient increases of pCO2 in many freshwater systems. We examined the behavioural, physiological and transcriptomic responses of an ancient fish, the lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) to projected levels of warming and pCO2 during its most vulnerable period of life, the first year. Specifically, larval fish were raised in either low (16°C) or high (22°C) temperature, and/or low (1000 μatm) or high (2500 μatm) pCO2 in a crossed experimental design over approximately 8 months. Following overwintering, lake sturgeon were exposed to a transient increase in pCO2 of 10,000 μatm, simulating a spring melt based on data in freshwater systems. Transcriptional analyses revealed potential connections to otolith formation and reduced growth in fish exposed to high pCO2 and temperature in combination. Network analyses of differential gene expression revealed different biological processes among the different treatments on the edges of transcriptional networks. Na+/K+‐ATPase activity increased in fish not exposed to elevated pCO2 during development, and mRNA abundance of the β subunit was most strongly predictive of enzyme activity. Behavioural assays revealed a decrease in total activity following an acute CO2 exposure. These results demonstrate compensatory and compounding mechanisms of pCO2 and warming dependent on developmental conditions in lake sturgeon. Many animals undergo indirect development, where their embryogenesis produces an intermediate life stage, or larva, that is often free‐living and later metamorphoses into an adult. As their adult counterparts, larvae can have unique and diverse morphologies and occupy various ecological niches. Given their broad phylogenetic distribution, larvae have been central to hypotheses about animal evolution. However, the evolution of these intermediate forms and the developmental mechanisms diversifying animal life cycles are still debated. This review focuses on Spiralia, a large and diverse clade of bilaterally symmetrical animals with a fascinating array of larval forms, most notably the archetypical trochophore larva. We explore how classic research and modern advances have improved our understanding of spiralian larvae, their development, and evolution. Specifically, we examine three morphological features of spiralian larvae: the anterior neural system, the ciliary bands, and the posterior hyposphere. The combination of molecular and developmental evidence with modern high‐throughput techniques, such as comparative genomics, single‐cell transcriptomics, and epigenomics, is a promising strategy that will lead to new testable hypotheses about the mechanisms behind the evolution of larvae and life cycles in Spiralia and animals in general. We predict that the increasing number of available genomes for Spiralia and the optimization of genome‐wide and single‐cell approaches will unlock the study of many emerging spiralian taxa, transforming our views of the evolution of this animal group and their larvae. Taurine supplementation has shown survival and feeding efficiency in larval fish development. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the effects of adding taurine to the longfin yellowtail (Seriola rivoliana) diet for 60 days. Fish (n = 270) were distributed in three treatments: T0 without taurine, T1, and T2, supplemented with taurine at 1 and 2%, respectively. Growth performance, blood serum biochemistry, fatty acid, and amino acid profiles in skeletal muscle were evaluated. Notable improvements (P < 0.05) were observed in T1 and T2 in terms of specific growth rate (SGR) and weight gain (WG). Survival rates (SR) did not show significant differences (P > 0.05). In addition, a decrease was observed in intraperitoneal fat (IPF). Still, an increase was observed in blood parameters, including higher total protein (TP) and globulin (GLO) concentration, as well as a reduction in cholesterol (CHO) levels. Changes in fatty acid profiles were also detected in skeletal muscle with an increase in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and elevation in taurine concentration in T2. The results showed that adding 20 g kg-1 of taurine to the diet improved growth, skeletal muscle, and blood serum biochemistry. The aim of the present research was to improve Oreochromis niloticus reproduction by treating females exogenously with L-thyroxin (T4), which will stimulate the producing of inhibin and activin A during the growth of larvae, with an influence on the growth and survival of larvae. The immunohistochemical examination was carried out on developing larvae from O. niloticus spawners administered T4 and control, examining the allocation of activin/inhibin subunits A and B, as well as the inhibin subunit α, from 1-28 days post-hatching. The injection of the females with T4 hormone had a notable impact on the reproductive activity, leading to an enhancement in the quality of their eggs, as demonstrated by the significantly normal larvae upon hatching. Findings from the immunohistochemical investigation showed that only inhibin/activin βA were obtained in the differentiate kidney, heart, brain, digestive system, and gills. Strong immunoreactivities of inhibin/activin βA were located in all examined tissues and ages, indicating that injections of thyroxin (1 or 5μg T4/g BW) into O. niloticus female significantly improved the yield of them in the growing tissues of larvae. Inhibin/activin βA could control the differentiation and growth of various organs in O. niloticus larvae. Consequently, T4, inhibin, and activin A through direct or indirect means aided in the growth of O. niloticus larvae, as evidenced by the notable increases in larvae weight and length that obtained through the entire experiment. In addition, in comparison to the control, the treated females' larvae had a noticeably greater rate of survival. We could conclude that tilapia females' reproduction is enhanced by external T4 in the blood of females, which then transfers through the eggs to larvae. The thyroid hormone that was transferred seems to influence the production of inhibin/activin A, which could provide a unique growth advantage for the progeny of O. niloticus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to investigate the relationship between the surface distribution of fish larvae and juveniles and environmental factors in the Philippine Sea in summer, surface horizontal trawl surveys were conducted with large larvae and juvenile fish nets (diameter 1.3 m, mesh 0.5 mm) at 50 sampling stations in the Philippine Sea (11°N-19°N, 129°E-138°E) during the summer of 2022. A total of 38 159 fish larvae and juveniles, belonging to 14 orders, 21 families, and 56 species were collected. The dominant species in the daytime collection were Thunnus albacares and Encrasicholina punctifer, while the dominant species in the nighttime collection was Encrasicholina punctifer, so the co-dominant species was Encrasicholina punctifer, which accounted for 97.05% of the total number of samples collected. The total mean density of fish larvae and juveniles at each station was 292.43 ind./1 000 m³, with a mean density of 17.61 ind./1 000 m³ collected during the daytime and 526.54 ind./1 000 m³ collected during the nighttime, indicating significant differences in diel distribution. The stations with higher densities were mainly located in the sea near 15 N, and all sample were collected at night. Canonical correlation analysis showed that the environmental factors affecting the distribution of fish larvae and juveniles were, in descending order, sea surface salinity, sea surface temperature, and dissolved oxygen. The distribution of the dominant species Encrasicholina punctifer was mainly influenced by sea surface salinity and dissolved oxygen. The study shows that the fish larvae and juveniles in the Philippine Sea have a rich species composition with uneven surface distribution and significant differences in diel distribution. Clupeiform fishes are ecologically and economically important species contributing to industrial and artisanal fisheries worldwide. They represent key links in food webs, influencing the dynamic between trophic levels. The dietary interactions of these species are poorly studied in many regions, yet essential for fisheries management. To elucidate the role of these species in food webs of the Southern Brazilian Bight pelagic fisheries, we used metabarcoding analysis of fish stomach contents of Clupeiformes and possible predators. Onboard sampling from March to September 2016 allowed for processing of 87 stomach samples representing 31 species (including 12 samples representing three species of Clupeiformes). Links between trophic levels showed the predominance of Sardinella brasiliensis and Engraulis anchoita as important dietary items of a large range of fishes (28 species belonging to 18 families) and representing the majority of the total prey read abundance assigned to clupeiform fishes (~46% and ~32%, respectively). Opisthonema oglinum contributed to the diet of 16 species in 13 families and ~18% of total read abundance of clupeiform fishes as prey. The appearance of multiple clupeiform taxa in the diet of predators that are not commonly associated with pelagic prey indicates that ecosystem‐based fisheries management should not be separated between pelagic and demersal fisheries. The diet of Clupeiformes revealed an unexpectedly large diversity of fish species and a low proportion of invertebrates (<5% of clupeiform prey reads). This was likely due to a combination of both a limitation of the metabarcoding method (primer bias and low success of invertebrate taxonomic identification) as well as a contribution of early life stages (ichthyoplankton) to the diet of these fishes. The potential role of clupeiform fish populations as a constraint to the recruitment from the ichthyoplanktonic phase of other ecologically or commercially important fishes should be considered as an important direction for future studies. Survival through the larval phase is predicated on the probabilities of successful feeding, which dictates growth rates, and the probabilities of encountering predators. Here I perform a synthesis of feeding, growth, and mortality rates estimated during several studies from coastal Newfoundland, Canada, to provide a description of the probability distribution that can serve as a foundation of the expected distribution of vital rates. The standardized observations clearly follow that of skewed distributions, appropriately fit to a probability gamma distribution, with feeding demonstrating a stronger degree of skewness than either mortality or growth, possibly because each vital rate integrates prey–predator interactions over different time scales. Commonality in the underlying form of the distribution of vital rates in larval fish, along with clear functional relationships between gamma parameters, represents a probabilistic basis of expectations against which observations from prior or new studies can be contrasted. An example of the use of such expectations demonstrates that they can provide useful contextual information about the contrast among observations and our ability to identify their relationship with environmental drivers. Sulaibikhat Bay, a shallow embayment dominated by tides and extensive mud flats along the northern coast of Kuwait Bay, serves as a crucial nursery ground for various commercially important species of finfish and shellfish in the Northwestern Arabian Gulf (NWAG). As the location of Kuwait’s inaugural marine protected area (MPA), Sulaibikhat Bay plays a vital role in fostering numerous fish and marine invertebrate species of commercial importance in the Arabian/Persian Gulf. Accurate identification of larval specimens from this habitat is essential for understanding their spawning dynamics and recruitment process. However, limitations in taxonomic identification hinder scientific understanding of fish larval recruitment. To address this, our baseline study employed an integrated taxonomic approach, combining conventional morphology with molecular techniques. Fish larvae collected from the MPA and surrounding waters in Spring (2022) were identified up to the genus and species levels using partial gene sequencing of 16 S rRNA and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase (COI) genes. Morphological analysis indicated the prevalence of Sparidae, Sillaginidae, and Dorosomatidae families. Molecular analysis confirmed the presence of these families and identified two species, Crenidens crenidens (Sparidae) and Nematalosa nasus (Dorosomatidae), along with two genera, Diplodus sp. (Sparidae) and Sillago sp. (Sillaginidae), which exhibited maximum similarity to available COI sequences of Diplodus sargus, and Sillago maculata, respectively. This represents the first baseline molecular study on fish larvae from NWAG, laying the groundwork for future in-depth analyses with more larval specimens and spatiotemporal samplings from the entire exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Kuwait in the Arabian/Persian Gulf. Myctophids are central in ocean food webs, yet knowledge of the ecology of larval stages is sparse. We investigated if larval feeding ecology is different in continental shelf break waters compared to waters off oceanic islands in the western Tropical Atlantic. The larvae were collected through diurnal and nocturnal oblique hauls using a Bongo net and stomach contents were analyzed. The larvae ranged between 2.27 and 16.5 mm in standard length. Diet composition was different in the slope and islands (Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA), P  < 0.001). Diatoms (mainly Thalassiosira spp. and fragments of diatoms) were numerically important in the diet at the slope site (69% of relative importance). Copepods were the most relevant prey (71% of relative importance) near the islands. Copepods were the biomass-dominant dietary item at both areas, alongside ostracods near the islands. Smaller prey items were more important for smaller larvae, particularly those measuring up to 4 mm. Larger prey became relatively more important as the larvae grew to at least 8 mm. In the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone (ETNP‐OMZ), fish larvae undergo development amidst highly variable dissolved oxygen environments. As OMZs expand, understanding the implications of low‐oxygen environments on fish development becomes increasingly relevant for fisheries management and ecosystem modeling. Using horizontal zooplankton tows to track five oxygen levels (oxic [200 μmol/kg], hypoxic [100 μmol/kg] suboxic [10 μmol/kg], anoxic [<1 μmol/kg], and deep [10 μmol/kg at ~ 1000 m depth]), this study analyzed the three‐dimensional distribution of fish larvae and adults across the ETNP‐OMZ. Results revealed a wide midwater anoxic core, extending from Costa Rica to Baja California, that was almost devoid of fish larvae (< 1 larvae/1000 m3). Early larval stages primarily inhabited the oxic and hypoxic levels above the core, while postflexion and transformation stages occurred across a wider oxygen gradient, including the deep level below the anoxic core. Epipelagic species (e.g., Auxis sp.) were predominantly found in the surface oxic level, whereas coastal‐demersal species (e.g., Bregmaceros bathymaster, Ophidion spp.) were prevalent in the hypoxic level above the core. Meso‐bathypelagic species (e.g., Diogenichthys laternatus, Cyclothone spp.) were present throughout the study area, including below the anoxic core as transformation larvae and juveniles. These findings indicate that a vertical expansion of anoxic waters in OMZs could further constrain the habitat of epipelagic species, while also affecting the ontogenic vertical movements of meso‐bathypelagic species. Objective: The copepod Parvocalanus crassirostris has recently increased its use as live food in marine fish hatcheries. Methods: To investigate the bacterial community of P. crassirostris nauplii and explore the potential use of nauplii as a vector for probiotics, adult copepods were reared with or without a probiotic consortium (Bacillus spp. and Lactobacillus spp.). Nauplii from both treatments were either enriched with probiotics or not, resulting in four treatments: control rearing and nonenriched, control rearing and probiotic enriched, probiotic rearing and nonenriched, and probiotic rearing probiotic enriched. A next‐generation sequencing analysis of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene was performed. Result: The bacterial community of nauplii without probiotics was dominated by the phyla Proteobacteria (mean ± standard deviation = 51.5 ± 8.0%) and Bacteroidetes (27.6 ± 6.7%); from these phyla, the most abundant orders were Rhodobacterales (21.8 ± 2.0%), Flavobacteriales (13.5 ± 9.4%), Chitinophagales (9.7 ± 1.8%), Alteromonadales (9.5 ± 4.0%), and Burkholderiales (3.8 ± 0.8%). Opportunistic pathogenic bacterial genera, such as Vibrio spp. and Pseudomonas spp., were detected at very low relative abundances (<1.2%), indicating that P. crassirostris nauplii could be considered a safe microbiological live feed. Furthermore, P. crassirostris nauplii were a good vector for probiotics delivery, as the adhesion of probiotics on the copepod exoskeleton was successful. Bacillus spp. abundance was 5–6× greater than the abundance of Lactobacillus spp. in P. crassirostris nauplii. The highest mean values of probiotics relative abundance (Bacillus spp. 41 ± 6.0%, Lactobacillus spp. 6.0 ± 3.0%) were observed in nauplii that were reared with probiotics and also enriched with probiotics. Conclusion: Parvocalanus crassirostris nauplii stages I–II appear to be good vectors to provide probiotics to first‐feeding fish larvae. Knowledge on species composition is the first step necessary for the proper conservation and management of biological resources and ecologically relevant species. High species diversity and a lack of diagnostic characters for some groups can impose difficulties for taxonomic identification through traditional methodologies, and ichthyoplankton (fish larvae and eggs) are a good example of such a scenario. With more than 35.000 valid species of fishes worldwide and overall similar anatomies in early developmental stages in closely related groups, fish larvae are often hard to be identified at the species or even more encompassing taxonomic levels. To overcome this situation, molecular techniques have been applied, with different markers tested over the years. Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) is the most commonly used marker and now has the broadest public reference libraries, providing consistent results for species identification in different metazoan studies. Here we sequenced the mitochondrial COI-5P fragment of 89 fish larvae collected in the Campos Basin, coastal southeastern Brazil, and compared these sequences with references deposited in public databases to obtain taxonomic identifications. Most specimens identified are species of the Blenniiformes, with Parablennius and Labrisomus the most frequently identified genera. Parablennius included two species (P. marmoreus and P. pilicornis), while Labrisomus included three species (L. cricota, L. conditus and L. nuchipinnis). Anatomy of these molecularly identified specimens were then analyzed with the intention of finding anatomical characters that might be diagnostically informative amongst the early development stage (pre-flexion) larvae. Ventral pigmentation patterns are proposed as useful markers to identify Labrisomus species. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotopes (SI) serve as natural markers for evaluating fish food sources. However, interpreting SI isotope values in newly hatched fish becomes intricate due to the transfer of maternal resources during early development (egg, larvae). This research investigates maternal influences on neotropical freshwater fish larvae growth through SI analysis, focusing on the pacú fish (Piaractus mesopotamicus). The study utilizes a commercial inert feed to assess carbon and nitrogen contributions to larval tissue growth while evaluating the turnover rate, providing valuable insights into early-life nutritional dynamics. Both SI exhibit variations during larval development, following a chronological pattern corresponding to ontogeny, with a significant shift at 13 days after hatching (DAH). Maternal transmission significantly influences isotopic signatures in early larval stages, showing linear correlations between isotopic ratios and standard length (SL) until 15 DAH. C:N ratios decrease from 6.3 ± 0.1 at 0 DAH to 4.2 ± 0.1 at 13 DAH. The isotopic composition of maternal origin aligns with egg stage values, emphasizing the stability of maternal transmission. Under experimental conditions, elemental carbon half-life in tissue (t50) is 6.44 days, and nitrogen t50 is 3.82 days. The dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) is a vulnerable predatory fish found in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, and in the Mediterranean Sea. This study investigates the movement patterns of grouper larvae (151 individuals) during their first feeding period (three to ten days post hatching) through laboratory experiments offering rotifers (Brachionus sp.) and copepod nauplii as food. High-speed cameras and imaging techniques including bright field microscopy, matched filters, and holography captured rapid displacements (up to 25 body lengths per second), peduncle caudal beats (up to 40 beats s−1), turns, and resting periods. Reynolds numbers ranged from <45 for routine swimming to 222 for burst swimming. Specific behaviors, including changes in swimming velocity and body movements, were observed from three days post hatching, when feeding begins, suggestive of an array of responses to environmental forcing, predator avoidance, food search, and feeding success. These findings provide insights into the critical movement performances of E. marginatus larvae, which help to unravel their ecological interactions and survival strategies. For fish oil-free aquafeed development, a photoautotrophic microalga Tisochrysis lutea is believed to be the candidate source of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (n-3 HUFA) because of its docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) biosynthesis. While DHA contents of T. lutea vary during the cultivation periods depending on algal growth phase, little is mentioned about how this dependence should be taken into consideration when evaluating the suitability of microalgae as an alternative to fish oil-formulated diets. Here, we compared nutritionally maximized cells of deceleration growth phase T. lutea and fish oils-formulated product (n-3 HUFA-enriched Chlorella) as a rotifer enrichment diet for enhancement in Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larviculture. T. lutea had higher concentrations of DHA in the polar lipids than those for enriched Chlorella. Such higher concentrations of T. lutea were estimated only in the deceleration growth phase (not in the logarithmic growth or stationary phase). When deceleration growth phase T. lutea were fed to Brachionus plicatilis rotifers previously cultured on unenriched Chlorella, the DHA of the rotifers was boosted up to the level in those fed with enriched Chlorella. Furthermore, use of T. lutea-fed rotifers for initial feeding of fish larvae enhanced the growth, survival, n-3 HUFA levels, and final juvenile productivity of the larvae as much as feeding the larvae with enriched Chlorella-fed rotifers. We propose that T. lutea in the deceleration growth phase are efficacious, fish oil-free sources of n-3 HUFA for marine fish larviculture. Abstract Seagrass habitats play a major role in fisheries productivity through nursery functions and feeding grounds for diverse fish species. However, little is known about the seasonal distribution of fish larvae at large spatial scales in coastal East Africa. We investigated drivers of the seasonal fish larvae abundance and composition in seagrass habitats in Kenya and Tanzania. We found a high diversity of fish larvae (54 families) inhabiting seagrass habitats that differed between sites and seasons. Fish larvae abundance were highest in Kenya, particularly during the northeast monsoon season. Overall, total larval abundances per site were low, reaching less than 190 individuals/100 m3 in Kenya and less than 40 individuals/100 m3 in Tanzania, likely related to the low productivity and strong hydrodynamic processes in this region. Our data suggests that most of the fish spawn year-round in these tropical waters as we did not find strong seasonal patterns. All sites had a high relative abundance of larvae from demersal spawning fishes, indicating that many fish species move to coastal sites for spawning. Primary productivity and dissolved oxygen, driven by hydrodynamics conditions are positively related to fish larvae productivity both in Kenya and Tanzania. These findings indicate that the occurrence of both resident and transient fish larvae in seagrass meadows is driven by strong hydrodynamic and tidal processes that transport fish larvae across adjacent habitats.

Background: Human parasitic infections caused by Adenophorean nematodes encompass a range of diseases, including dioctophymiasis, trichuriasis, capillariasis, trichinellosis, and myositis. These infection can result in adverse impacts on human health and cause societal and economic concerns in tropical and subtropical regions. Methods: This review conducted searches in PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar for relevant studies that published in established databases up to April 26, 2024. Studies that focused on the common morphology, life cycle, disease distribution, clinical manifestations, and prevention and control strategies for Adenophorean parasitic diseases in humans were included. Results: Adenophorean nematodes exhibit shared morphological characteristics with a four-layered cuticle; uninucleate epidermal cells; pseudocoelom with six or more coelomocytes; generally three caudal glands; five esophageal glands; two testes in males with median-ventral supplementary glands in a single row; tail in males rarely possessing caudal alae; amphids always postlabial; presence of cephalic sensory organs; absence of phasmids; and a secretory-excretory system consisting of a single ventral gland cell, usually with a non-cuticularized terminal duct. Humans play two important roles in the life cycle of the nematode class, Adenophorea: 1) as a definitive host infected by ingesting undercooked paratenic hosts, embryonated eggs, infective larvae in fish tissue and meat contaminated with encysted or non-encysted larvae, and 2) as an accidental host infected by ingesting parasitic eggs in undercooked meat. Many organs are targeted by the Adenophorean nematode in humans such as the intestines, lungs, liver, kidneys, lymphatic circulation and blood vessels, resulting in gastrointestinal problems, excessive immunological responses, cell disruption, and even death. Most of these infections have significant incidence rates in the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America; however, some parasitic diseases have restricted dissemination in outbreaks. To prevent these diseases, interventions together with education, sanitation, hygiene and animal control measures have been introduced in order to reduce and control parasite populations. Conclusions: The common morphology, life cycle, global epidemiology and pathology of human Adenophorean nematode-borne parasitic diseases were highlighted, as well as their prevention and control. The findings of this review will contribute to improvement of monitoring and predicting human-parasitic infections, understanding the relationship between animals, humans and parasites, and preventing and controlling parasitic diseases. The eastern North Pacific is simultaneously experiencing ocean warming (OW) and ocean acidification (OA), which may negatively affect fish early life stages. Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) is an economically and ecologically important species with demonstrated sensitivity to OW and OA, but their combined impacts are unknown. Through a ~ 9-week experiment, Pacific cod embryos and larvae were reared at one of six combinations of three temperatures (3, 6, 10 °C) and two CO2 levels (ambient: ~ 360 μatm; high: ~ 1560 μatm) in a factorial design. Both embryonic and larval mortality were highest at the warmest temperature. Embryonic daily mortality rates were lower under elevated CO2 and there was no effect of CO2 level on larval daily mortality rates. Growth rates of young larvae (0 to 11 days post-hatch) were faster at warmer temperatures and at high CO2 levels, but growth during the 11–28 days post-hatch interval increased by temperature alone. The condition of larvae decreased with age, but less markedly under high CO2 levels. However, at 6 °C, fish incubated in ambient CO2 remained in higher condition than fish in the high CO2 treatment throughout the experiment. Overall, temperature had the greater influence on Pacific cod early life stages across each measurement endpoint, while CO2 effects were more modest and inconsistent. Subtle developmental differences in larval Pacific cod could be magnified later in life and important in the context of recruitment. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is a tropical fruit that has become a sought-after commodity by enthusiasts from various countries, including Indonesia. The active components found in mangosteen peel primarily consist of active xanthone compounds, such as mangostenol, mangostin, mangostino A, mangostino B, tvophylin B, trapezifolixanthone, alpha mangostin, beta mangostin, garcinon B, mangostano, as well as flavonoids epicatechin and gartanin. These compounds exhibit a range of beneficial properties, including antiinflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antihistamine, antidiabetic, anticancer, and more. Consequently, there is significant potential in developing mangosteen peel extract as a valuable ingredient in herbal medicine. However, there is currently no available data on the effects of exposure to mangosteen peel decoction on fish animal models. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the impact of mangosteen peel decoction on wader pari fish (Rasbora lateristriata) embryos. In this study, wader pari embryos were subjected to various concentrations of mangosteen peel decoction (0.5, 1, 5, and 25 µg/mL). The effects on egg hatchability, survival rate (SR), heart rate frequency, and heart morphology of the larvae were meticulously examined using a Leica microscope. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA. The findings demonstrated that exposure to mangosteen peel decoction resulted in lower hatching rates and embryonic survival, alongside an increased heart rate frequency. Additionally, the exposed embryos displayed cardiac edema and cardiac bending, particularly at the concentration of 25 µg/mL. In conclusion, the exposure of wader pari fish embryos to mangosteen peel decoction at the concentrations of 25 µg/mL and higher significantly affected the hatching rate, survival rate, and heart rate of R. lateristriata fish larvae. The dispersal of fish into distant and isolated habitats remains a topic of continuous discussion in the field of fish biogeography. This is particularly relevant due to the perceived limitation of fish movement to what is known as active dispersal. Fish migration is often confined to interconnected water bodies, underscoring the significance of dispersal for fish inhabiting isolated aquatic habitats. However, empirical evidence for a natural (i.e. not human‐mediated) mechanism has been limited. Here we explore and provide evidence for waterbird‐mediated endozoochory as a possible dispersal mechanism in various fish species and families. We force‐fed mallardsAnas plathyrynchoswith fertilised eggs of nine bony fish species, covering nine taxonomic families. We recovered viable embryos of five fish taxa in the faeces of mallard, proving the ability of fish eggs to survive the passing of the digestive system of waterbirds. Moreover, the recovered eggs successfully hatched into larvae in two fish species. Taking into the flight speed and numerosity of mallards, as well as the high abundance of fish eggs, our results highlight endozoochory of fish eggs by waterbirds as a possible significant, although likely rare natural dispersal mechanism that can occur across more species than previously known in freshwater fish. Estuaries are crucial fish nursery habitats owing to their high productivity and the presence of various microhabitats for the early development of aquatic organisms. This study investigated the temporal and spatial patterns of the species composition and abundance of larval fish assemblages in the Nakdong River estuary, South Korea, through bi-monthly sampling in the inner and outer estuaries. Fifty-five larval taxa were collected, and the larval fish assemblages were dominated by a few species. Engraulis japonicus (28.8%) was the most abundant, followed by Gobiidae sp.1 (22.6%), Clupea pallasii (13.9%), and Omobranchus sp. (6.1%). The species richness, abundance, and diversity tended to be higher during the warm season in the inner estuary. Multivariate analyses revealed that the structures of larval fish assemblages were significantly influenced by the season and site. Spatial and seasonal changes in larval fish assemblages resulted from the different occurrence patterns of common fish larvae in relation to water temperature and salinity. Among the predominant fish larvae, E. japonicus was captured more frequently in more saline outer estuaries during the warm season, whereas Gobiidae sp.1 and C. pallasii were more abundant in less saline inner estuaries during the warm and cold seasons, respectively. The results of this study improve our understanding of larval biodiversity in estuarine habitats in relation to environmental modification and contribute to the evaluation of nursery functions in the Nakdong River estuary. Peres fish (Osteochilus kappenii) is a native freshwater fish in Central Aceh, Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the morphology and histology development of the digestive tract of Peres larvae. Understanding the developmental stages is essential to support the success of larval rearing during ontogeny. The parameters observed include the total length (TL) of larvae, daily growth rate, larval morphology, and histology of the digestive tract. Furthermore, the total length of the larvae was measured from 1 to 25 day after hatching (DAH). The larvae sampling was conducted at 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 10, 15, 20, and 25 DAH. Morphological and histological observations were carried out microscopically, and data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the TL of larvae growth at the beginning (1 DAH) and termination (25 DAH) of the study was 4.58 ± 0.24 mm and 9.62 ± 0.79 mm, respectively. Based on the structural development of the body and food sources, the development of percussion larvae was divided into four phases, namely the yolk sac (0-4 DAH), pre-flexion (5-15 DAH), flexion (16-20 DAH), and post-flexion (21-25 DAH). The yolk was completely absorbed 4 DAH, marking the end of the yolk sac phase, as the Peres fish larvae began to use external feed. At 25 DAH, the larval morphology was fully formed and pigmentation spread throughout the body. The digestive organs and glands are well-developed with differentiation of the midgut and hindgut, increased goblet cells in the intestine, and increased lipid vacuoles in the liver and zymogen in the pancreas to utilize feed optimally. The identification and expression of germ cells are important for studying sex-related mechanisms in fish. The vasa gene, encoding an ATP-dependent RNA helicase, is recognized as a molecular marker of germ cells and plays a crucial role in germ cell development. Silurus asotus, an important freshwater economic fish species in China, shows significant sex dimorphism with the female growing faster than the male. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these sex differences especially involving in the vasa gene in this fish remain poorly understood. In this work, the vasa gene sequence of S. asotus (named as Savasa) was obtained through RT-PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA end (RACE), and its expression in embryos and tissues was analyzed using qRT-PCR and an in situ hybridization method. Letrozole (LT) treatment on the larvae fish was also conducted to investigate its influence on the gene. The results revealed that the open reading frame (ORF) of Savasa was 1989 bp, encoding 662 amino acids. The SaVasa protein contains 10 conserved domains unique to the DEAD-box protein family, showing the highest sequence identity of 95.92% with that of Silurus meridionalis. In embryos, Savasa is highly expressed from the two-cell stage to the blastula stage in early embryos, with a gradually decreasing trend from the gastrula stage to the heart-beating stage. Furthermore, Savasa was initially detected at the end of the cleavage furrow during the two-cell stage, later condensing into four symmetrical cell clusters with embryonic development. At the gastrula stage, Savasa-positive cells increased and began to migrate towards the dorsal side of the embryo. In tissues, Savasa is predominantly expressed in the ovaries, with almost no or lower expression in other detected tissues. Moreover, Savasa was expressed in phase I–V oocytes in the ovaries, as well as in spermatogonia and spermatocytes in the testis, implying a specific expression pattern of germ cells. In addition, LT significantly upregulated the expression of Savasa in a concentration-dependent manner during the key gonadal differentiation period of the fish. Notably, at 120 dph after LT treatment, Savasa expression was the lowest in the testis and ovary of the high concentration group. Collectively, findings from gene structure, protein sequence, phylogenetic analysis, RNA expression patterns, and response to LT suggest that Savasa is maternally inherited with conserved features, serving as a potential marker gene for germ cells in S.asotus, and might participate in LT-induced early embryonic development and gonadal development processes of the fish. The Don Sahong Hydropower Project (DSHPP), located in the Khone Falls area of Khong District, Champasak Province, southern Laos, near the border with Cambodia, has been amongst the most controversial hydropower dams in the Mekong River Basin. Despite considerable regional and international opposition, the dam was finally constructed, becoming commercially operational in 2020. In 2011, I expressed serious concerns about the project's potential impacts on long-distance migratory fish and associated fisheries, especially fish that migrate from Cambodia and Vietnam up the Mekong River to Laos and Thailand. However, my concerns have somewhat changed along with the circumstances, although they continue to focus on dam impacts on migratory fish. I am now particularly concerned about the indirect impacts of the DSHPP on the fishing livelihoods in the Khone Falls area, and the impacts of the dam on fish larvae and fish passing through the dam's turbines when migrating downstream. Using a political ecology approach, this paper considers how infrastructure, in this case a large hydropower dam located on the Mekong River, has altered the spatialities associated with the project in particular ways. Eggs of dumbo catfish are known to stick to the substrate due to the presence of a mucus layer, which causes suboptimal oxygen supply and low hatching percentage. This indicates that the mucus layer must be lowered while eliminating the need for a substrate during hatching. One of the natural ingredients that can be used for this purpose is papaya leaf, which contains the proteolytic enzyme papain. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of papaya leaf solution on the percentage of live embryos after soaking, hatching percentage, hatching time, survival rate, and abnormality percentage of dumbo catfish larvae. This research was carried out at the Basic Fisheries Laboratory, Aquaculture Study Program, Fisheries Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University in August-October 2022. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used, which consisted of four treatments and three repetitions. The treatment given was the soaking of eggs in papaya leaf solution with different concentrations of (P0/control), 2 g/0.96 L (P1), 4 g/0.96 L (P2), and 6 g/0.96 L (P3). The results showed that P2 was the best treatment with 100% live embryos after soaking, 94.06% hatching percentage, 20.24 hours hatching time, 92.78% survival rate, and 0.93% abnormality percentage. Based on these results, the soaking of dumbo catfish eggs in papaya leaf solution could increase the hatching percentage and survival rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
