This paper examines how physical climate exposure affects firm performance and global supply chains. We document that heat at supplier locations reduces the operating income of suppliers and their customers. Further, customers respond to perceived changes in suppliers' exposure: when suppliers' realized exposure exceeds ex ante expectations, customers are 7% more likely to terminate supplier relationships. Consistent with experience-based learning, this effect increases with signal strength and repetition and decreases with country-level climate adaptation. Subsequent replacement suppliers show a lower expected and realized but similar projected heat exposure. We find similar results for suppliers' exposure to floods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low salinity Waterflooding (LSWF) is a proven EOR technique which has emerged in the last few decades. In this, the salinity of the injected water is reduced. Studies have unveiled that the LSWF can improve about 5–38% of oil recovery. This work aims to study the effectiveness of LSWF by modeling Sea waterflooding (SWF) and LSWF using a commercial reservoir simulator and justifying the proposed mechanisms responsible for the incremental oil recovery due to LSWF. A critical parametric study has been undertaken, which led us to conclude that LSWF is a cost-effective, and environment-friendly method that results in additional oil recovery for sandstone reservoirs. Previous research has shown a link between extreme weather events and people's beliefs about climate change and their pro-environmental behaviour. This indicates that people may become more environmentally friendly amid increasing extreme weather events. Still, the influence of experiencing extreme weather events on actual behaviour has rarely been tested with large-scale individual-level data and longitudinal methods. This study links panel data from 35,678 individuals to floods across England and heatwaves across the UK and applies within-person estimators to account for pre-existing differences between affected and unaffected individuals. Results reveal that individuals are more likely to believe in climate change after being affected by a geographically proximate flood or a temporally proximate heatwave. This association is stronger among initially right-leaning partisans and those initially more sceptic about the existence of climate change, thereby indicating attitudinal updating due to experiential learning. However, those exposed to extreme weather events do not change their environmental behaviour such as energy saving, sustainable shopping or mode of transportation. Disaster is often seen as a "leveller" that affects everyone equally but the impact of disasters varies due to structural inequalities, access to resources, gender roles, and power relations, leading to a disproportionate effect on certain populations. This paper is based on a case study of three flood-affected districts of Assam and explores how gender is often used in a restrictive manner, confining it to a binary and neglecting non-binary gender identities, their vulnerabilities, and capacities in disaster risk reduction. The landform of the region highly influences the dynamics of the flood and plays a crucial role in directing the water flow, affecting the speed and volume of runoff. Assam, located in northeast India, experiences floods yearly due to adverse climatic conditions and complex terrain features. The objective of the present study is to understand the landform classification of Assam using the topographic position index (TPI) and geomorphon-based automated classification of landform (ACL) method and its spatial distribution with slope, geology, soil, LULC, and flood inundation. The ACL method shows that gentle slopes or flat areas occupy the maximum area ranging from 56.17 to 68.10% for TPI‐based slope position classes, and for geomorphon, slope feature occupies 20.61–25.39% of the total area. The spatial distribution of TPI and geomorphon-based landform classification was different because TPI compares the elevation of a point to the average elevation of its neighbourhood, while geomorphon classifies the landscape into predefined landform classes based on terrain shape and the spatial arrangement of elevation values. In both models, valleys are the most dominant landform class and are mainly present in the Central and Barak valley of Assam. The built-up areas and waterbodies on vulnerable landform classes increase their flood susceptibility. About 38.08% of the inundated area was found in wide valleys and 31% of the inundated area lies under flat landforms. We conducted this qualitative study to explore the life recovery experiences of farmers in one of the worst flood-hit districts of Pakistan. Data were gathered in August 2020, ten years after the disastrous 2010 floods, which hit a significant population of the country. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted to document the subjective evaluation of the study participants with regard to restoration and readjustment of routine social life, work and livelihoods. Specifically, we asked the farmers to share their life recovery experiences by recalling the factors that helped and hindered their recovery process. Thematic analysis uncovered that personal resilience, belief system, bonding social capital, formal aid and previous flood experience were the major factors that contributed positively to the farmers' life recovery. Political patronization and perceived unfairness in distribution of disaster aid were major factors that hindered the pace of their life recovery. In general, the findings of the study indicate that positive life recovery feelings of flood affected farmers are associated with resilience/vulnerabilities at individual and community level. The development of a basin‐specific comprehensive flood record using publicly available data for the James River Basin, Virginia. Using mixed surface analysis maps (NOAA, NWS), historical hurricane records (IBTrACS, HURDAT2), and flood and river gauge records (NWS, USGS), a database is created for analysis. Related to creating this database, a novel classification of six unique weather systems (non‐tropical and tropical) responsible for flooding is presented. The analysis includes Two‐Way tables with observed marginal and joint probabilities in various potential flood, storm, and regional combinations. Results show 233 tropical systems passed within the 500‐km study area, with 12.4%, or 29 systems of those systems causing flooding within the basin. An additional 713 events were non‐tropical, composing the majority of flood sources in the basin. Non‐tropical systems are responsible for 84% of the worst floods recorded, leading to an increased frequency of 6% yearly since 1941 and nearly 770% between 2014 and 2018. The findings of this study will be the basis for assessing land use and population patterns in the area, along with a future compound flooding model for the lower James River Basin. Flooding is one of the main social impacts in urban areas, especially in larger, densely impermeable cities. Therefore, developing studies capable of identifying areas that are vulnerable to this type of event is crucial to provide early warning and a quick and effective response to reduce damages. Thus, this study sought to identify areas vulnerable to flood in the Igapó Lake Basin, a densely urbanized area in Lodrina city, southern Brazil. The methodology was based on four main steps: (1) basin characterization, (2) elaboration of the conditioning factors of the flooding by using the analysis hierarchical process (AHP), (3) vulnerability analysis in the GIS environment, (4) and model sensitivity analysis. The parameters considered in this study were as follows: flow concentration, land use, slope, distance from the discharge channel, and altimetry. The proposed methodology has proven to be robust in identifying flood-vulnerable areas. The results revealed that approximately 3.1 km2 (10.3%) of the basin are considered areas of high or very high vulnerability to flood events, affecting many residential buildings, the most abundant land use class in the investigated area. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the intricate interplay between vulnerability to flooding, land use changes, urban development patterns, and resilience measures, offering valuable insights for policymakers and urban planners striving to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events. Translation abstract More resilient levees using geotextilesFlood events occur regularly in Germany, with the dykes as flood protection structures taking centre stage. Due to the high water levels in conjunction with often long‐lasting flood events, the stability of the dykes, which are usually built as homogeneous earth structures, was often critical, and in some cases the dykes even failed. By using geotextiles, dykes can be reinforced or secured both in the course of new construction or upgrading and immediately before or during flood events in such a way that the typical cases of failure can be prevented or at least significantly delayed. Some possible applications of geotextiles for short and long‐term preventive measures are presented in this article. In this study, two hydrodynamic models, TELEMAC-2D and HEC-RAS 2D, were compared for their Rain-on-Grid (RoG) technique with a particular focus on runoff generation processes in a small and steep catchment. Curve number (CN) method was applied in both the models to simulate two single storm events up to 20 h of duration, whereas the Green-Ampt Redistribution (GAR) method was additionally applied in HEC-RAS 2D for a multi-peak flood event with sustained flow between the peaks. CN and GAR methods were compared for this flood event, and a sensitivity analysis of the GAR parameters was also done. Moreover, the two models were compared for their calibration process, computational time, mesh size and shape, and model availability, in general, as well as the results including inundated areas, water depth, and velocity. The results indicate that both the models are capable of reproducing short duration single storm floods. NSE and R2 for both models ranged from 0.70 to 0.90 and from 0.93 to 0.95. However, the models struggled to reproduce the long-duration multipeak flood event. The sensitivity analysis showed that the results are not very sensitive to the two GAR parameters which are responsible to influence the flow of the second peak in the flood event. Neither the CN nor the GAR infiltration method successfully replicated such events because the hydraulic models permanently lose infiltrated water from the domain. The returned sub-surface flow significantly contributes to river flow during these flood events; however, none of the model incorporates a return flow algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forecasting landslide inundation upon catastrophic failure is crucial for reducing casualties, yet it remains a long‐standing challenge owing to the complex nature of landslides. Recent global studies indicate that catastrophic hillslope failures are commonly preceded by a period of precursory creep, motivating a novel scheme to foresee their hazard. Here, we showcase an approach to hindcast landslide inundation by linking satellite‐captured precursory displacements to modeling of consequent granular‐fluid flows. We present its application to the 2021 Chunchi, Ecuador landslide, which failed catastrophically and evolved into a mobile debris flow after four months of precursory creep, destroying 68 homes along its lengthy flow path. Underpinned by uncertainty quantification and in situ validations, we highlight the feasibility and potential of forecasting landslide inundation damage using observable precursors. This forecast approach is broadly applicable for flow hazards initiated from geomaterial failures. Plain Language Summary: One of the most effective approaches to reduce landslide damage, is somehow getting to know in advance where the target landslide is about to occur and how large the damage area will be when it occurs. Here, we show a possible solution of using satellite‐observed precursory motion to find and quantify the landslide source, and then input this information into a granular‐flow model to estimate its potential damage area when evolving into a debris flow. This seamlessly integrated method could allow to effectively inform hazard reduction, as large catastrophic landslides have been widely observed to manifest precursory destabilization weeks to months before the final failure. As a representative example, we applied this approach to the 2021 Chunchi, Ecuador landslide event and found it highly effective for predicting landslide inundation based on both model uncertainty quantification and field validations. River bedforms and their deposits—fluvial cross strata— respond to floods. However, it is unclear if all floods are equally represented in cross strata. Here, using a series of physical experiments in which bedforms were subjected to equivalent flood magnitudes over varying durations, we demonstrate the existence of a lower bound on flood durations that are represented in cross strata. We show that the scour depths and preserved set thickness are indistinguishable from baseflow conditions when the rising‐limb duration of floods is shorter than the baseflow‐equilibrated bedform turnover timescale—time required to displace the volume of a single bedform at baseflow conditions. In contrast, scour depth and preserved set thickness distributions deviate from baseflow conditions when flood rising‐limb duration exceeds the baseflow‐equilibrated bedform turnover timescale, causing preferential preservation of falling‐limb bedform dynamics. Our work provides a previously unrecognized quantitative bound on flood durations that are represented in fluvial cross strata. Plain Language Summary: Bedforms are routinely found on sandy riverbeds and their deposits, called fluvial cross strata, are the fundamental building blocks of river deposits. It has long been hypothesized that bedforms respond to floods by changing their shape and speed. In addition, fluvial cross strata are hypothesized to record past floods, thus, providing a key window into past hydrologic variability. However, it is unclear if floods of all durations are equally likely to be represented in bedform morphology and fluvial cross strata. Here, we investigate how floods of different durations are recorded in fluvial cross strata using four physical experiments of bedform evolution. We examine changes in bedform morphology (height, length, speed) and preservation with floods of equal magnitude but varying durations and compare the results with a control experiment with steady water and sediment discharge. Our results reveal a previously unrecognized lower limit on preserved flood duration in cross strata, corresponding to the time required to move a single bedform one wavelength (turnover timescale) in baseflow conditions. Only floods with durations longer than the turnover timescale led to identifiable changes in bedform morphology and fluvial cross strata. These findings advance our ability to better interpret geological records of past floods. A case study describes the impact on a collection of the extreme floods in eastern Australia in February 2022, and the salvaging of the Lismore Regional Art Gallery art collection. Despite predetermined protocols and preparedness efforts, the gallery suffered unprecedented flooding, requiring coordinated solutions to support emergency recovery. The project included relocating and stabilising around 1400 artworks, divided between the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Coordinated collaboration with stakeholders was needed to determine which artworks were salvageable; initial assessments indicated 60%. However, after further assessment this was reduced to 40% of all artworks able to be returned to a condition suitable for storage and display. The paper focuses on the assessment criteria used to prioritise artworks for salvage and conservation: insurance value, condition post-flooding, the views of living artists on display of treated works, and sentimental and community importance. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is undergoing massive and rapid urbanization as part of Vision 2030. This includes development projects along Saudi Arabia's coastline across the Red Sea. Coastal areas, especially the ones along Saudi's western regions are susceptible to natural disasters such as flooding. NEOM, a futuristic city currently being developed in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, exemplifies a potential flooding hazard due to its geographic location and proposed urbanization plans. This research aims to enhance flood hazard assessment in NEOM by applying the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) in combination with Geographic Information System (GIS). Acknowledging traditional limitations related to data availability and parameter selection consensus, the study carefully selects parameters such as drainage density, elevation, slope, rainfall, land use/land cover (LULC), soil type, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and topographic wetness index (TWI). The 30 m DEM was used to derive Drainage Density, Slope, and TWI while LULC data helped assess land cover changes. Rainfall data and soil type information are integrated to evaluate their impact on flood susceptibility. NDVI is employed to analyze vegetation cover. Utilizing ArcGIS Pro's weighted overlay model, the criteria were combined to generate the final flood susceptibility map. The research outcomes manifest in a flood susceptibility map categorizing areas into seven distinct susceptibility classes, ranging from 'very low' to 'very high.' A quantitative breakdown in a summary table provides insights into the proportional distribution of flood risk. Results indicate a significant portion of NEOM falls within varying degrees of moderate susceptibility range with relatively limited distribution of flood susceptibility on the extremes, equating to areas with 'low to moderate' susceptibility is 4,322.8 km2, areas with 'moderate' susceptibility is 5,109.69 km2, areas with 'moderate to high' is 4,081.39 km2. The flood susceptibility map developed in this study can shed insights on potential optimum areas for flood mitigation measures (i.e., optimum locations for establishing stormwater collection points). Background: Exposure to extreme weatherly events potentially develops mental disorders among affected individuals. Aim: To synthesize the burden of mental disorders following impact of extreme weather events in South-east Asian (SEA) countries. Methods: Proposal was registered in PROSPERO register [CRD42023469788] and reported as per PRISMA-2020 guidelines. Studies reporting prevalence of mental health disorders following extreme weather events from SEA countries during 1990 and 2023 were searched on Embase, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Study quality was assessed using Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies. Overall pooled prevalence was computed using DerSimonian-Laird method for random-effects model and reported as 95% confidence intervals. Results: On screening 12,046 records, we included 155 studies (2,04,474 participants) for analysis. Overall burden of mental disorders was 35.31% (95%CI: 30.42%-40.21%). In subgroup analysis, studies on cyclones, India, local residents, children and adolescents, rural settings, and community settings reported higher burden of mental disorders. Depression (28.58%; 95%CI: 24.05%-33.1%) and PTSD (29.36%; 95%CI: 26.26%-32.46%) had similar prevalence. Visiting tourists to SEA region experienced fear, fear of recurrence of tsunami, nightmares, and sense of helplessness. Mental health outcomes were relatively higher in studies conducted within 1 year of events. Heterogeneity and possibility of publication bias exists among the reported studies. Conclusion: With the significant rise in episodes of extreme weather events in SEA region over the last three decades, mental disorders are documented in different proportions. We suggest prioritizing well-informed policies to formulate inclusive and resilient strategies on effectively identifying and treating mental health concerns among victims of extreme weather events. In the South Carolina Lowcountry, near‐annual hurricanes and record‐breaking sea levels have led to disastrous flooding, overwhelming the region's historical tidal infrastructures and entrenched racial geographies. In response, Lowcountry governments, institutions, and residents have undertaken efforts at "perimeter protection," raising dikes and seawalls to safeguard selected urban and rural plantation spaces from tidal flooding. Although perimeter protection is presented as a neutral resilience strategy, its practices and material forms reveal a close relationship between coastal protection and efforts to preserve landscapes of white supremacy. Such logics of perimeter protection contrast with everyday affective encounters with eroding coastlines and with the futures outside of bounded edges imagined by Black Charlestonians. By situating the region's hydrological history within the legacy of slavery and plantation extraction, and by following the effects of current sea level rise, we can see how historical hydrologies—which in this case are also racial hydrologies—are entangled with landscapes of contemporary environmental injustice. In northeast Houston, a community organization is experimenting with building green infrastructure, beginning with rain gardens. In doing so, the project's participants are engaging in what might be called "infrastructural citizenship." This form of citizenship uses "civil power" to defy white‐supremacist legacies of technopolitical flood control, which have made northeast Houston one of the most heavily flooded parts of the city. Yet infrastructural citizenship also expresses commitments beyond stormwater management, taking aim at inherited infrastructural logics and traditions associated with other norms of US petroculture (e.g., spatialized and racialized environmental toxicity, translocal supply chains). In contrast to the default petrosolidarity that ensnares the Global North (and much of the Global South), initiatives like the rain garden project evince a growing geosolidarity with the land and its capacities. Such a politics can challenge both a racist petrostate and the conditions of ecological emergency that it perpetrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
