The synthesis and mesomorphism of sixteen new nonsymmetric liquid crystal dimers formed by covalently attaching cholesterol with a three-ring mesogenic core, namely, phenyl 4-(benzoyloxy)benzoate, via an ω-oxyalkanoyl spacer are described. The lengths of the terminal chain attached to the three-ring core, as well as those of the ω-oxyalkanoyl spacer, have been varied; accordingly, they have been grouped into four sets. They display an enantiotropic chiral nematic (N*) behaviour with the isotropization temperature crossing over 200 oC. Four dimers having an odd-parity spacer were found to additionally show blue phase-I/II (BP-I/II), and the smectic A (SmA) phase. Twelve dimers with an even-membered spacer also stabilise either chiral smectic C (SmC*) or twist grain boundary (TGB) phase having SmC* slabs (TGBC* phase). The dimers with longer spacer and terminal tail favour the formation of the TGBC* phase. Thus, the lengths of both the terminal tail and the central spacer are seen to direct the type of mesophase and liquid crystal phase sequences to be formed. X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out on representative samples to corroborate the structure of the mesophases. Three series of novel dimeric supramolecules, possessing both inter- as well as intramolecular H-bonding, have been prepared and investigated for their thermal properties. They were obtained in excellent yields by condensing cholesteryl ω-(3-hydroxy-4-formylphen-oxy)alkanoates with 4-(n-alkoxy)benzohydrazides, 3,4-bis(n-decyl-oxy)benzohydrazide and 3,4,5-tris(n-decyloxy)benzohydrazide. The influence of increase in the number of terminaln-alkoxy tails from one to three and the length and parity of the flexible spacer on phase transitional behaviour have been thoroughly investigated with the aid of microscopic, calorimetric and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The results of these complementary studies clearly illustrate the dependence of thermal behaviour of the dimers on these structural factors. The rigid intermolecular associationviaH-bonds through complementary benzohydrazide component enforce their self-assembly into frustrated and polar smectic phases; H-bond force coupled with the bulkiness of steroid moiety affects the electrical switching property of this fluid polar structure. Abstract: Two novel series of optically active dimers comprising cholesterol and biphenyl-4-yl 4-(n-alkoxy)benzoate cores interlinked though either an odd-parity/even-parity spacer have been prepared and characterized. They stabilize an extremely complex, frustrated liquid crystalline state viz., the twist grain boundary (TGB) phase with chiral smectic C structure, denoted as TGBC∗ phase, over a wide (50–110 °C) temperature range. Notably, the dimers with an odd-parity spacer show an additional frustrated liquid crystal phase namely, the blue phase (BP). The presence of such frustrated phases suggests that the synthesized dimers are characterized by high enantiomeric excess and strong molecular chirality. Thus, 12 new optically active, nonsymmetric dimers reported herein constitute new examples of rarely found strongly chiral, optically pure dimers showing frustrated liquid crystal phase over an adequately wide thermal range. Abstract: In this article we highlight the packing of chiral molecules in the stabilisation of twist grain boundary phases of liquid crystals. We probe the nature and structure of the screw dislocations in these frustrated phases, and describe their mobility through examples of twist inversion, reentrancy and rotational motion. We then explore the possibility of forming edge dislocation phases through investigating the filamentary structures formed at the transition from the nematic phase in bent-core systems. Research into the structures and properties of frustrated liquid crystal phases continues apace. A number of new twist grain boundary phases have been discovered, of particular interest are those with their rod-like molecules inclined to the layer planes, i.e. the TGBC phases. A new anticlinic TGBC phase has also been discovered complimenting the synclinic TGBC phases. In addition a number of smectic blue phases (BPSm) have recently been discovered. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
