Adolescence is characterized by dynamic neurodevelopment, which poses opportunities for risk and resilience. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) confer additional risk to the developing brain, where ACEs have been associated with alterations in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) BOLD signaling in brain regions underlying inhibitory control. Socioenvironmental factors like the family environment may amplify or buffer against the neurodevelopmental risks associated with ACEs. Using baseline to Year 2 follow-up data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, the current study examined how ACEs relate to fMRI BOLD signaling during successful inhibition on the Stop Signal Task in regions associated with inhibitory control and examined whether family conflict levels moderated that relationship. Results showed that greater ACEs were associated with reduced BOLD response in the right opercular region of the inferior frontal gyrus and bilaterally in the pre-supplementary motor area, which are key regions underlying inhibitory control. Further, greater BOLD response was correlated with less impulsivity behaviorally, suggesting reduced activation may not be behaviorally adaptive at this age. No significant two or three-way interactions with family conflict levels or time were found. Findings highlight the continued utility of examining the relationship between ACEs and neurodevelopmental outcomes and the importance of intervention/prevention of ACES.

As consumers are exposed to thousands of advertisements daily, researchers have sought to understand what makes people remember certain brands better than they remember others. Metaphors like Carvana's vending machines and taglines like "Red Bull gives you wings" have increasingly become a powerful way for marketers to communicate brand attributes. In this study, we sought to characterize the memorability of ads across three distinct categories (functional, emotional, and metaphorical) using behavioral and neuroimaging methods. Participants were exposed to 20 ads from each of these categories and underwent a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan while trying to recall details from these ads one week later. We found a significant effect of category on brand recall immediately after exposure and memory recognition for snippets from the ad a week later, with metaphorical and emotional ads outperforming functional ads. Insights from activation in key memory regions like the bilateral hippocampus during retrieval revealed that while people were likely to remember the salient aspects of emotional ads and rate them as highly vivid, they were weaker in recalling additional central details about the brands featured in them relative to metaphorical ads. LITT is a minimally-invasive laser ablation technique used to treat a wide variety of intracranial lesions. Difficulties performing intraoperative mapping have limited its adoption for lesions in/near eloquent regions. In this institutional case series, we demonstrate the utility of fMRI-adjunct planning for LITT near language or motor areas. Six out of 7 patients proceeded with LITT after fMRI-based tractography determined adequate safety margins for ablation. All underwent successful ablation without new or worsening postoperative symptoms requiring adjuvant corticosteroids, including those with preexisting deficits. fMRI is an easily accessible adjunct which may potentially reduce chances of complications in LITT near eloquent structures.

Functional neuroimaging emerged with great promise and has provided fundamental insights into the neurobiology of schizophrenia. However, it has faced challenges and criticisms, most notably a lack of clinical translation. This paper provides a comprehensive review and critical summary of the literature on functional neuroimaging, in particular functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), in schizophrenia. We begin by reviewing research on fMRI biomarkers in schizophrenia and the clinical high risk phase through a historical lens, moving from case-control regional brain activation to global connectivity and advanced analytical approaches, and more recent machine learning algorithms to identify predictive neuroimaging features. Findings from fMRI studies of negative symptoms as well as of neurocognitive and social cognitive deficits are then reviewed. Functional neural markers of these symptoms and deficits may represent promising treatment targets in schizophrenia. Next, we summarize fMRI research related to antipsychotic medication, psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions, and neurostimulation, including treatment response and resistance, therapeutic mechanisms, and treatment targeting. We also review the utility of fMRI and data-driven approaches to dissect the heterogeneity of schizophrenia, moving beyond case-control comparisons, as well as methodological considerations and advances, including consortia and precision fMRI. Lastly, limitations and future directions of research in the field are discussed. Our comprehensive review suggests that, in order for fMRI to be clinically useful in the care of patients with schizophrenia, research should address potentially actionable clinical decisions that are routine in schizophrenia treatment, such as which antipsychotic should be prescribed or whether a given patient is likely to have persistent functional impairment. The potential clinical utility of fMRI is influenced by and must be weighed against cost and accessibility factors. Future evaluations of the utility of fMRI in prognostic and treatment response studies may consider including a health economics analysis.

Objective This study used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging （rs-fMRI） to investigate the changes of local brain regional homogeneity in patients with depression and childhood maltreatment， and we calculated the relationship between altered ReHo values and the severity of childhood maltreatment. Methods 25 patients with depression and childhood maltreatment， 25 patients with depression without childhood maltreatment， and 25 age， gender， and education-matched healthy controls were prospectively enrolled. All subjects underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and ReHo analysis. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the group differences， along with multiple comparison correction. Pearson correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship between region ReHo values with clinical scales. Results Compared with the group of depression without childhood maltreatment， the abnormal brain regions of depression with childhood maltreatment are mainly located in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex， cerebellum， parietal gyrus， and precentral gyrus. The ReHo values of depression with childhood maltreatment in the left cerebellum and the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex are correlated with the severity of childhood maltreatment. Conclusions Depression with childhood maltreatment is associated with changes in local spontaneous brain activity， which are correlated with the severity of childhood maltreatment. The brain changes in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and cerebellum may explain the neurobiological mechanisms of depression with childhood maltreatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Touch is an essential form of non-verbal communication. While language and its neural basis are widely studied, tactile communication is less well understood. We used fMRI and multivariate pattern analyses in pairs of emotionally close adults to examine the neural basis of human-to-human tactile communication. In each pair, a participant was designated either as sender or as receiver. The sender was instructed to communicate specific messages by touching only the arm of the receiver, who was inside the scanner. The receiver then identified the message based on the touch expression alone. We designed two multivariate decoder algorithms—one based on the sender's intent (sender-decoder), and another based on the receiver's response (receiver-decoder). We identified several brain areas that significantly predicted behavioural accuracy of the receiver. Regarding our a priori region of interest, the receiver's primary somatosensory cortex (S1), both decoders were able to accurately differentiate the messages based on neural activity patterns here. The receiver-decoder, which relied on the receivers' interpretations of the touch expressions, outperformed the sender-decoder, which relied on the sender's intent. Our results identified a network of brain areas involved in human-to-human tactile communication and supported the notion of non-sensory factors being represented in S1. Introduction: Startle habituation and prepulse inhibition (PPI) are distinct measures of different sensory information processes, yet both result in the attenuation of the startle reflex. Identifying startle habituation and PPI neural mechanisms in humans has mostly evolved from acoustic-focused rodent models. Human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have used tactile startle paradigms to avoid the confounding effects of gradient-related acoustic noise on auditory paradigms and blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) measures. This study aimed to examine the neurofunctional basis of acoustic startle habituation and PPI in humans with silent fMRI. Methods: Using silent fMRI and simultaneous electromyography (EMG) to measure startle, the neural correlates of acoustic short-term startle habituation and PPI [stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) of 60  ms and 120  ms] were investigated in 42 healthy adults (28 females). To derive stronger inferences about brain-behaviour correlations at the group-level, models included EMGassessed measures of startle habituation (regression slope) or PPI (percentage) as a covariate. A linear temporal modulator was modelled at the individual-level to characterise functional changes in neural activity during startle habituation. Results: Over time, participants showed a decrease in startle response (habituation), accompanied by decreasing thalamic, striatal, insula, and brainstem activity. Startle habituation was associated with the linear temporal modulation of BOLD response amplitude in several regions, with thalamus, insula, and parietal lobe activity decreasing over time, and frontal lobe, dorsal striatum, and posterior cingulate activity increasing over time. The paradigm yielded a small amount of PPI (9–13%). No significant neural activity for PPI was detected. Discussion: Startle habituation was associated with the thalamus, putamen, insula, and brainstem, and with linear BOLD response modulation in thalamic, striatal, insula, parietal, frontal, and posterior cingulate regions. These findings provide insight into the mediation and functional basis of the acoustic primary startle circuit. Instead, whilst reduced compared to conventional MRI, scanner noise may have disrupted prepulse detection and processing, resulting in low PPI and impacting our ability to map its neural signatures. Our findings encourage optimisation of the MRI environment for acoustic PPI-based investigations in humans. Currently available data show mixed results as to whether the processing of emotional information has the same characteristics in the native (L1) as in the second language (L2) of bilinguals. We conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment to shed light on the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying bilinguals' emotional processing in L1 and L2 during an emotional interference task (i.e., the Emotional Stroop Task - EST). Our sample comprised proficient Italian-English bilinguals who learned their L2 during childhood mainly in instructional rather than immersive contexts. In spite of no detectable behavioural effects, we found stronger brain activations for L1 versus L2 emotional words in sectors of the posteromedial cortex involved in attention modulation, episodic memory, and affective processing. While fMRI findings are consistent with the hypothesis of a stronger emotional resonance when processing words in a native language, our overall pattern of results points to the different sensitivity of behavioural and hemodynamic responses to emotional information in the two languages of bilingual speakers. Faces can acquire emotional meaning by learning to associate individuals with specific behaviors. Here, we investigated emotional evaluation and brain activations toward faces of persons who had given negative or positive evaluations to others. Furthermore, we investigated how emotional evaluations and brain activation generalize to perceptually similar faces. Valence ratings indicated learning and generalization effects for both positive and negative faces. Brain activation, measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), showed significantly increased activation in the fusiform gyrus (FG) to negatively associated faces but not positively associated ones. Remarkably, brain activation in FG to faces to which emotional meaning (negative and positive) was successfully generalized was decreased compared to neutral faces. This suggests that the emotional relevance of faces is not simply associated with increased brain activation in visual areas. While, at least for negative conditions, faces paired with negative feedback behavior are related to potentiated brain responses, the opposite is seen for perceptually very similar faces despite generalized emotional responses. Independent component analysis (ICA) and dictionary learning (DL) are the most successful blind source separation (BSS) methods for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data analysis. However, ICA to higher and DL to lower extent may suffer from performance degradation by the presence of anomalous observations in the recovered time courses (TCs) and high overlaps among spatial maps (SMs). This paper addressed both problems using a novel three-layered sparse DL (TLSDL) algorithm that incorporated prior information in the dictionary update process and recovered full-rank outlier-free TCs from highly corrupted measurements. The associated sequential DL model involved factorizing each subject's data into a multi-subject (MS) dictionary and MS sparse code while imposing a low-rank and a sparse matrix decomposition restriction on the dictionary matrix. It is derived by solving three layers of feature extraction and component estimation. The first and second layers captured brain regions with low and moderate spatial overlaps, respectively. The third layer that segregated regions with significant spatial overlaps solved a sequence of vector decomposition problems using the proximal alternating linearized minimization (PALM) method and solved a decomposition restriction using the alternating directions method (ALM). It learned outlier-free dynamics that integrate spatiotemporal diversities across brains and external information. It differs from existing DL methods owing to its unique optimization model, which incorporates prior knowledge, subject-wise/multi-subject representation matrices, and outlier handling. The TLSDL algorithm was compared with existing dictionary learning algorithms using experimental and synthetic fMRI datasets to verify its performance. Overall, the mean correlation value was found to be 26 % higher for the TLSDL than for the state-of-the-art subject-wise sequential DL (swsDL) technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is one of the non-invasive brain stimulations that modulate cortical excitability through magnetic pulses. However, the effects of rTMS on Parkinson's disease (PD) have yielded mixed results, influenced by factors including various rTMS stimulation parameters as well as the clinical characteristics of patients with PD. There is no clear evidence regarding which patients should be applied with which parameters of rTMS. The study aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of personalized rTMS in patients with PD, focusing on individual functional reserves to improve ambulatory function. Methods: This is a prospective, exploratory, multi-center, single-blind, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial. Sixty patients with PD will be recruited for this study. This study comprises two sub-studies, each structured as a two-arm trial. Participants are classified into sub-studies based on their functional reserves for ambulatory function, into either the motor or cognitive priority group. The Timed-Up and Go (TUG) test is employed under both single and cognitive dual-task conditions (serial 3 subtraction). The motor dual-task effect, using stride length, and the cognitive dual-task effect, using the correct response rate of subtraction, are calculated. In the motor priority group, high-frequency rTMS targets the primary motor cortex of the lower limb, whereas the cognitive priority group receives rTMS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The active comparator for each sub-study is bilateral rTMS of the primary motor cortex of the upper limb. Over 4 weeks, the participants will undergo 10 rTMS sessions, with evaluations conducted pre-intervention, mid-intervention, immediately post-intervention, and at 2-month follow-up. The primary outcome is a change in TUG time between the pre- and immediate post-intervention evaluations. The secondary outcome variables are the TUG under cognitive dual-task conditions, Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III, New Freezing of Gait Questionnaire, Digit Span, trail-making test, transcranial magnetic stimulation-induced motor-evoked potentials, diffusion tensor imaging, and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Discussion: The study will reveal the effect of personalized rTMS based on functional reserve compared to the conventional rTMS approach in PD. Furthermore, the findings of this study may provide empirical evidence for an rTMS protocol tailored to individual functional reserves to enhance ambulatory function in patients with PD. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of a virtual reality rehabilitation-based training (VRT) with balance-specific training (BST) and conventional training (CT) on the balance and gross motor functions (GMF) of children with cerebral palsy (CwCP).This study was a double blinded, randomized controlled trial. Participants were recruited from different CP rehabilitation centers and clinics and were then randomly allocated using the block randomization method into three groups: (1) group 1 (VRT using a set of Xbox 360 games that triggered balance), (2) group 2 (BST applying a protocol of 13 exercises to enhance balance in different conditions), and (3) control group 3 (CT using traditional physiotherapy techniques). All groups received 18 sessions over six weeks, three sessions per week, each lasting 60 minutes. Participants were assessed at three timepoints (baseline, post-treatment, and follow-up) using the Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS), the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM D & E), the Five Times Sit-To-Stand Test, and upper and lower segments’ center of mass (COM) displacement (UCOM and LCOM).A total of 46 CwCP participated in this study. The repeated measures ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference between groups in the dependent variables, except for the GMFM (D & E) and the PBS (p < 0.05 and partial η 2 = 0.473). The post-hoc test showed a statistically significant difference in favor of the VRT group compared to other groups in terms of right UCOM (p < 0.05) with a large effect size of the time*group interaction (partial η 2 = 0.87). Moreover, there was a statistically significant effect of time (i.e., baseline to post-treatment and baseline to follow-up) with F (18, 23) = 59.954, p < 0.05, Wilks’ lambda = 0.021, partial η2 = 0.979.The findings revealed that VRT was not superior to BST in the rehabilitation of balance and GMF in CwCP aged four to 12 years. However, when compared to CT, better results were reported. Furthermore, it appears that customized programs lead to greater improvements in balance than commercial programs. Future studies are needed to assess the physiological effects of the three types of rehabilitation interventions using more advanced measurement tools, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, following VRT protocols. The neuroimaging mechanisms underlying differences in the outcomes of sound therapy for tinnitus patients remain unclear. We hypothesize that abnormal hierarchical architecture is the neuro-biomarker for treatment outcome explanation. We conducted functional connectome gradient analyses on resting-state functional MRI images that acquired before intervention to investigate differences among the patients with effective treatment (ET, n = 27), ineffective treatment (IT, n = 41), and healthy controls (HC, n = 59). General linear models were used to analyze the associations between intergroup differential regions and clinical characteristics. Partial least squares regression was employed to reveal correlations with gene expression. Compared to HC, both ET and IT groups displayed significant differences in the default mode network. Moreover, the ET group exhibited wider gradient range and greater gradient variance. Also, the gradient scores of the differential regions between the ET and HC groups were significantly correlated with Self-rating Anxiety Scale and Self-rating Depression Scale scores, and exhibited positive correlations with the transcriptional profiles of genes related to depression and anxiety. Our results indicated that the abnormalities of ET group, may be more relevant to psychiatric disorders, bringing a higher possible therapeutic potential due to the plasticity of the nervous system. Connectome gradient dysfunction with genetic evidence may serve as an indicator for identifying diverse treatment outcomes of the sound therapy for tinnitus patients before treatment. A few large-scale spatiotemporal patterns of brain activity (quasiperiodic patterns or QPPs) account for most of the spatial structure observed in resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The QPPs capture wellknown features such as the evolution of the global signal and the alternating dominance of the default mode and task positive networks. These widespread patterns of activity have plausible ties to neuromodulatory input that mediates changes in nonlocalized processes, including arousal and attention. To determine whether QPPs exhibit variations across brain conditions, the relative magnitude and distribution of the three strongest QPPs were examined in two scenarios. First, in data from the Human Connectome Project, the relative incidence and magnitude of the QPPs was examined over the course of the scan, under the hypothesis that increasing drowsiness would shift the expression of the QPPs over time. Second, using rs-fMRI in rats obtained with a novel approach that minimizes noise, the relative incidence and magnitude of the QPPs was examined under three different anesthetic conditions expected to create distinct types of brain activity. The results indicate that both the distribution of QPPs and their magnitude changes with brain state, evidence of the sensitivity of these largescale patterns to widespread changes linked to alterations in brain conditions. Introduction: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become a fundamental tool for studying brain function. However, the presence of serial correlations in fMRI data complicates data analysis, violates the statistical assumptions of analyses methods, and can lead to incorrect conclusions in fMRI studies. Methods: In this paper, we show that conventional whitening procedures designed for data with longer repetition times (TRs) (>2 s) are inadequate for the increasing use of short-TR fMRI data. Furthermore, we comprehensively investigate the shortcomings of existing whitening methods and introduce an iterative whitening approach named "IDAR" (Iterative Data-adaptive Autoregressivemodel) to address these shortcomings. IDAR employs high-order autoregressive (AR) models with flexible and data-driven orders, offering the capability to model complex serial correlation structures in both short-TR and long-TR fMRI datasets. Results: Conventional whiteningmethods, such as AR(1), ARMA(1,1), and higher-order AR, were effective in reducing serial correlation in long-TR data but were largely ineffective in even reducing serial correlation in short-TR data. In contrast, IDAR significantly outperformed conventional methods in addressing serial correlation, power, and Type-I error for both long-TR and especially short-TR data. However, IDAR could not simultaneously address residual correlations and inflated Type-I error effectively. Discussion: This study highlights the urgent need to address the problem of serial correlation in short-TR (<1 s) fMRI data, which are increasingly used in the field. Although IDAR can address this issue for a wide range of applications and datasets, the complexity of short-TR data necessitates continued exploration and innovative approaches. Recent studies have shown that during the typical resting‐state, echo planar imaging (EPI) time series obtained from the eye orbit area correlate with brain regions associated with oculomotor control and lower‐level visual cortex. Here, we asked whether congenitally blind (CB) shows similar patterns, suggesting a hard‐wired constraint on connectivity. We find that orbital EPI signals in CB do correlate with activity in the motor cortex, but less so with activity in the visual cortex. However, the temporal patterns of this eye movement‐related signal differed strongly between CB and sighted controls. Furthermore, in CB, a few participants showed uncoordinated orbital EPI signals between the two eyes, each correlated with activity in different brain networks. Our findings suggest a retained circuitry between motor cortex and eye movements in blind, but also a moderate reorganization due to the absence of visual input, and the inability of CB to control their eye movements or sense their positions. Backgroud: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is associated with abnormal dynamic functional connectivity patterns, but the dynamic changes in brain activity at each time point remain unclear, as does the potential molecular mechanisms associated with the dynamic temporal characteristics of TLE. Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was acquired for 84 TLE patients and 35 healthy controls (HCs). The data was then used to conduct HMM analysis on rs-fMRI data from TLE patients and an HC group in order to explore the intricate temporal dynamics of brain activity in TLE patients with cognitive impairment (TLE-CI). Additionally, we aim to examine the gene expression profiles associated with the dynamic modular characteristics in TLE patients using the Allen Human Brain Atlas (AHBA) database. Results: Five HMM states were identified in this study. Compared with HCs, TLE and TLE-CI patients exhibited distinct changes in dynamics, including fractional occupancy, lifetimes, mean dwell time and switch rate. Furthermore, transition probability across HMM states were significantly different between TLE and TLE-CI patients (p < 0.05). The temporal reconfiguration of states in TLE and TLE-CI patients was associated with several brain networks (including the high-order default mode network (DMN), subcortical network (SCN), and cerebellum network (CN). Furthermore, a total of 1580 genes were revealed to be significantly associated with dynamic brain states of TLE, mainly enriched in neuronal signaling and synaptic function. Conclusions: This study provides new insights into characterizing dynamic neural activity in TLE. The brain network dynamics defined by HMM analysis may deepen our understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of TLE and TLE-CI, indicating a linkage between neural configuration and gene expression in TLE. BACKGROUND Patients with brain injury who are Unresponsive to Commands may perform Cognigrees, tive tasks that are detected on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMILI) and electroencephalography (EEG). This phenomenon, known as cognitive motor dissociation, has not been systematically studied in a large cohort of persons with disorders of consciousness. METHODS In this prospective cohort study conducted at six international centers, we collected clinical, behavioral, and task-based fMRI and EEG data from a convenience sample of 353 adults with disorders of consciousness. We assessed the response to commands on task-based fMRI or EEG in participants without an observable response to verbal commands (i.e., those with a behavioral diagnosis of coma, vegetative state, or minimally conscious state-minus) and in participants with an observable response to verbal commands. The presence or absence of an observable response to commands was assessed with the use of the Coma Recovery Scale--Revised (CRS-R). RESULTS Data from fMRI only or EEG only were available for 65% of the participants, and data from both fMRI and EEG were available for 35%. The median age of the participants was 3Z9 years, the median time between brain injury and assessment with the CRS-R was 7.9 months (25°6 of the participants were assessed with the CRS-R within 28 days after injury), and brain trauma was an etiologic factor in 50%. We detected cognitive motor dissociation in 60 of the 241 participants (259/0) without an observable response to commands, of whom 11 had been assessed with the use of fMRI only, 13 with the use of EEG only, and 36 with the use of both techniques. Cognitive motor dissociation was associated with younger age, longer time since injury, and brain trauma as an etiologic factor. In contrast, responses on task-based fMRI or EEG occurred in 43 of 112 participants (38°/0) with an observable response to verbal commands. Inter-hemispheric cooperation is a prominent feature of the human brain, and previous neuroimaging studies have revealed aberrant inter-hemispheric cooperation patterns in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Typically, inter-hemispheric cooperation is examined by calculating the functional connectivity (FC) between each voxel in one hemisphere and its anatomical (structurally homotopic) counterpart in the opposite hemisphere. However, bilateral hemispheres are actually asymmetric in anatomy. In the present study, we utilized connectivity between functionally homotopic voxels (CFH) to investigate abnormal inter-hemispheric cooperation in 96 MDD patients compared to 173 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). In addition, we analyzed the spatial correlations between abnormal CFH and the density maps of 13 neurotransmitter receptors and transporters. The CFH values in bilateral orbital frontal gyri and bilateral postcentral gyri were abnormally decreased in patients with MDD. Furthermore, these CFH abnormalities were correlated with clinical symptoms. In addition, the abnormal CFH pattern in MDD patients was spatially correlated with the distribution pattern of 5-HT 1A R. drug effect; the cross-sectional research design precludes causal inferences; the neurotransmitter atlases selected were constructed from healthy individuals rather than MDD patients. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been linked to resilience and emotion regulation (ER). How HRV and brain processing interact during ER, however, has remained elusive. Sixty-two subjects completed the acquisition of resting HRV and task HRV while performing an ER functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) paradigm, which included the differential strategies of ER reappraisal and acceptance in the context of viewing aversive pictures. We found high correlations of resting and task HRV across all emotion regulation strategies. Furthermore, individuals with high levels of resting, but not task, HRV showed numerically lower distress during ER with acceptance. Whole-brain fMRI parametrical modulation analyses revealed that higher task HRV covaried with dorso-medial prefrontal activation for reappraisal, and dorso-medial prefrontal, anterior cingulate and temporo-parietal junction activation for acceptance. Subjects with high resting HRV, compared to subjects with low resting HRV, showed higher activation in the pre-supplementary motor area during ER using a region of interest approach. This study demonstrates that while resting and task HRV exhibit a positive correlation, resting HRV seems to be a better predictor of ER capacity. Even before the advent of fMRI, the amygdala occupied a central space in the affective neurosciences. Yet this amygdala-centred view on emotion processing gained even wider acceptance after the inception of fMRI in the early 1990s, a landmark that triggered a goldrush of fMRI studies targeting the amygdala in vivo. Initially, this amygdala fMRI research was mostly confined to task-activation studies measuring the magnitude of the amygdala's response to emotional stimuli. Later, interest began to shift more towards the study of the amygdala's resting-state functional connectivity and task-based psychophysiological interactions. Later still, the test-retest reliability of amygdala fMRI came under closer scrutiny, while at the same time, amygdala-based real-time fMRI neurofeedback gained widespread popularity. Each of these major subdomains of amygdala fMRI research has left its marks on the field of affective neuroscience at large. The purpose of this review is to provide a critical assessment of this literature. By integrating the insights garnered by these research branches, we aim to answer the question: What part (if any) can amygdala fMRI still play within the current landscape of affective neuroscience? Our findings show that serious questions can be raised with regard to both the reliability and validity of amygdala fMRI. Introduction: Although evidence supports the effective use of a cue to forget an encoded stimulus, the mechanisms of this forgetting are not well understood. Evidence from item-method directed forgetting in long-term memory reveals greater prefrontal and parietal activation for information that is cued to be forgotten. Activation in those brain regions is typically associated with increased effort and cognitive control. Method: To test themechanismof directed forgetting in visual workingmemory, we used stimuli that rely on distinct brain regions such as faces and buildings and varied memory stability. Participants completed a directed forgetting task with faces and buildings, and memory stability was manipulated by presenting some stimuli repeatedly throughout the study, and other stimuli were only presented once. Results and discussion: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) results fromthe parahippocampal place area suggest that to-be-remembered buildings elicit higher activation than to-be-forgotten buildings. In addition, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation changed throughout the trial period, possibly suggesting that the cue led to information being dropped from visual working memory, or through a shift in attention, as occurs with the retro-cue paradigm. Music can evoke pleasurable and rewarding experiences. Past studies that examined task-related brain activity revealed individual differences in musical reward sensitivity traits and linked them to interactions between the auditory and reward systems. However, state-dependent fluctuations in spontaneous neural activity in relation to music-driven rewarding experiences have not been studied. Here, we used functional MRI to examine whether the coupling of auditory-reward networks during a silent period immediately before music listening can predict the degree of musical rewarding experience of human participants (N = 49). We used machine learning models and showed that the functional connectivity between auditory and reward networks, but not others, could robustly predict subjective, physiological, and neurobiological aspects of the strong musical reward of chills. Specifically, the right auditory cortex-striatum/orbitofrontal connections predicted the reported duration of chills and the activation level of nucleus accumbens and insula, whereas the auditory-amygdala connection was associated with psychophysiological arousal. Furthermore, the predictive model derived from the first sample of individuals was generalized in an independent dataset using different music samples. The generalization was successful only for state-like, pre-listening functional connectivity but not for stable, intrinsic functional connectivity. The current study reveals the critical role of sensory-reward connectivity in pre-task brain state in modulating subsequent rewarding experience. Listening to music does not always elicit the same emotional response in the same person because that person's cognitive state can change, impacting their response. Mathematical learning and ability are crucial for individual and national economic and technological development, but the neural mechanisms underlying advanced mathematical learning remain unclear. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate how brain networks were involved in advanced mathematical learning and transfer. We recorded fMRI data from 24 undergraduate students as they learned the advanced mathematical concept of a commutative mathematical group. After learning, participants were required to complete learning and transfer behavioural tests. Results of single‐trial interindividual brain‐behaviour correlation analysis found that brain activity in the semantic and visuospatial networks, and the functional connectivity within the semantic network during advanced mathematical learning were positively correlated with learning and transfer effects. Additionally, the functional connectivity between the semantic and visuospatial networks was negatively correlated with the learning and transfer effects. The coordination of food intake, energy storage, and expenditure involves complex interactions between hypothalamic neurons and peripheral tissues including pancreatic islets, adipocytes, muscle, and liver. Previous research shows that deficiency of the transcription factor Alx3 alters pancreatic islet-dependent glucose homeostasis. In this study we carried out a comprehensive assessment of metabolic alterations in Alx3 deficiency. We report that Alx3-deficient mice exhibit decreased food intake without changes in body weight, along with reduced energy expenditure and altered respiratory exchange ratio. Magnetic resonance imaging reveals increased adiposity and decreased muscle mass, which was associated with markers of motor and sympathetic denervation. By contrast, Alx3-deficient mice on a high-fat diet show attenuated weight gain and improved insulin sensitivity, compared to control mice. Gene expression analysis demonstrates altered lipogenic and lipolytic gene profiles. In wild type mice Alx3 is expressed in hypothalamic arcuate nucleus neurons, but not in major peripheral metabolic organs. Functional diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging reveals selective hypothalamic responses to fasting in the arcuate nucleus of Alx3-deficient mice. Additionally, altered expression of proopiomelanocortin and melanocortin-3 receptor mRNA in the hypothalamus suggests impaired regulation of feeding behavior. Social neuroscientists often use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to understand the relationship between social experiences and their neural substrates. Although MRI is a powerful method, it has several limitations in the study of social experiences, first and foremost its low ecological validity. To address this limitation, researchers have conducted multimethod studies combining MRI with Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). However, there are no existing recommendations for best practices for conducting and reporting such studies. To address the absence of standards in the field, we conducted a systematic review of papers that combined the methods. A systematic search of peer-reviewed papers resulted in a pool of 11,558 articles. Inclusion criteria were studies in which participants completed (a) Structural or functional MRI and (b) an EMA protocol that included self-report. Seventy-one papers met inclusion criteria. The following review compares these studies based on several key parameters (e.g., sample size) with the aim of determining feasibility and current standards for design and reporting in the field. The review concludes with recommendations for future research. A special focus is given to the ways in which the two methods were combined analytically and suggestions for novel computational methods that could further advance the field of social neuroscience. Objectives Methods Results Conclusion Bipolar disorder (BD) is a highly heritable disorder characterized by emotion dysregulation and recurrent oscillations between mood states. Despite the proven efficacy of early interventions, vulnerability markers in high‐risk individuals are still lacking. BD patients present structural alterations of the hippocampus, a pivotal hub of emotion regulation networks composed of multiple subregions with different projections. However, the hippocampal dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) in BD remains unclear. We aim to investigate whether the dFC of hippocampal subdivisions differentiates BD patients, offspring of BD patients (BDoff), and healthy controls (HC); and whether it correlates with symptoms differently between these groups.We studied for the first time the dFC of the hippocampus through a cutting‐edge micro‐co‐activation patterns (μCAPs) analysis of resting‐state functional MRI data of 97 subjects (26 BD, 18 BDoff, 53 HC). μCAPs allow a data‐driven differentiation within the seed region.dFC between the hippocampal body and a somatomotor‐μCAP was lower both in BD patients (p‐valueFDR:0.00015) and in BDoff (p‐valueFDR:0.020) than in HC. Inversely, dFC between the hippocampal head and a limbic‐μCAP was higher in BD patients than in HC (p‐valueFDR: 0.005). Furthermore, the correlations between a frontoparietal‐μCAP and both depression and emotion dysregulation symptoms were significantly higher in BD than HC (p‐valueFDR <0.02).Overall, we observed alterations of large‐scale functional brain networks associated with decreased cognitive control flexibility and disrupted somatomotor, saliency, and emotion processing in BD. The brain connectivity‐based atlas is a promising tool for understanding neural communication pathways in the brain, gaining relevance in predicting personalized outcomes for various brain pathologies. This critical review examines the robustness of the brain connectivity‐based atlas for predicting post‐stroke outcomes. A comprehensive literature search was conducted from 2012 to May 2023 across PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, EBSCOhost, and Medline databases. Twenty‐one studies were screened, and through analysis of these studies, we identified 18 brain connectivity atlases employed by the studies for lesion analysis in their predictions. The brain atlases were assessed for study cohorts, connectivity measures, identified brain regions, atlas applications, and limitations. Based on the analysis of these studies, most atlases were based on diffusion tensor imaging and resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Studies predicting post‐stroke functional outcomes relied on the atlases for multivariate lesion analysis and region of interest identification, often employing atlases derived from young, healthy populations. Current brain connectivity‐based atlases for stroke applications lack standardized methods to define and map brain connectivity across atlases and cover sensorimotor functional connectivity to a limited extent. In conclusion, this review highlights the need to develop more comprehensive, robust, and adaptable brain connectivity‐based atlases specifically tailored to post‐stroke populations. Median age at MRI was 18 years (10–64 years). Half (48.2%) of women presenting had a history of pain, most often abdominal (84.6%) or vaginal (9.2%). Remnants were identified in 91.8% of women (n = 123). 4.5% of women had imaging features of endometriosis (n = 6). Women with a functional remnants were significantly more likely to experience pain (p < 0.001). Pain history was not strongly associated with ectopic ovarian position. Common gynaecological pathology such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts and fibroids were also identified.We identify that majority of women with MRKH will have uterine remnants with a connecting fibrous band, and an ectopic ovarian position 44.0% of cases. Introduction: This study aims to examine brain activity during dierent swallowing actions in patients with dysphagia caused by medullary infarction (MI) before and after treatment using blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging. Methods: Fifteen patients were enrolled in this study. Brain activation during saliva swallowing and eortful saliva swallowing was observed using BOLD imaging in the acute phase of stroke and after 4 weeks of rehabilitation training. Dierences in the activation of brain regions during saliva swallowing before and after treatment, during eortful saliva swallowing before and after treatment, and between the two swallowing actions before and after treatment were compared. Results: In the acute phase of stroke, only the bilateral precentral and left lingual gyrus were partially activated during saliva swallowing, and there was no obvious activation in the insula. Eortful saliva swallowing activated more brain regions than saliva swallowing before treatment, including the bilateral supplementary motor area (SMA), postcentral gyrus, and right insular cortex. The number of brain regions activated during saliva swallowing increased after treatment, including the bilateral precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus, insula, thalamus, and SMA. Discussion: Cortical activation increases after recovery from dysphagia, and the increased activation of the postcentral gyrus might play a functional compensatory role. Introduction: Numerous modes or patterns of neural activity can be seen in the brain of individuals during the resting state. However, those functions do not persist long, and they are continuously altering in the brain. We have hypothesized that the brain activations during the resting state should themselves be responsible for this alteration of the activities. Methods: Using the resting-state fMRI data of 63 healthy young individuals, we estimated the causality effects of each resting-state activation map on all other networks. The resting-state networks were identified, their causality effects on the other components were extracted, the networks with the top 20% of the causality were chosen, and the networks which were under the influence of those causal networks were also identified. Results: Our results showed that the influence of each activation component over other components is different. The brain areas which showed the highest causality coefficients were subcortical regions, such as the brain stem, thalamus, and amygdala. On the other hand, nearly all the areas which were mostly under the causal effects were cortical regions. Discussion: In summary, our results suggest that subcortical brain areas exert a higher influence on cortical regions during the resting state, which could help in a better understanding the dynamic nature of brain functions. Background: The neuropathologic mechanism of primary insomnia (PI) of females remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the features of amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) in females with PI using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and then explore the abnormalities of functional connectivity (FC). Materials and methods: A total of 39 female PI patients and 31 female healthy controls (HC) were enrolled in the study. The sleep condition was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and their depressive symptom was evaluated using the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-24). The rs-fMRI was once conducted for every subject. ReHo, ALFF, and ROI-based FC were used to analyze the changes of brain function. Results: ALFF values were increased in the Cerebelum_4_5_L, as well as decreased ALFF in the bilateral Frontal_Sup_Medial (SFGmed), Angular_L (ANG.L), Parietal_ Inf_R (IPL.R), SupraMarginal_R (SMG.R), and Postcentral_R (PoCG.R). ReHo values were increased in the Temporal_Pole_Mid_R (TPOsup.R), as well as decreased ReHo in the Insula_R (INS.R), Frontal_Inf_Oper_R (ORBinf.R), Putamen_R (PUT.R), Rolandic_Oper_R (ROL.R), bilateral Cingulum_Post (PCG), bilateral Frontal_Sup_ Medial (SFGmed), bilateral anterior cingulate and paracingulate gyri (ACG), and the bilateral precuneus (PCUN). Across the entire brain, there was a decline in the FC between Angular_R and Frontal_Sup_Medial_L. Background: Early phase research suggests that physiotherapy paired with use of robotic walking aids provides a novel opportunity for children with severe mobility challenges to experience active walking. The Trexo Plus is a pediatric lower limb exoskeleton mounted on a wheeled walker frame, and is adjustable to fit a child's positional and gait requirements. It guides and powers the child's leg movements in a way that is individualized to their movement potential and upright support needs, and can provide progressive challenges for walking within a physiotherapy-based motor learning treatment paradigm. Methods: This protocol outlines a single group mixed-methods study that assesses the feasibility of physiotherapy-assisted overground Trexo use in school and outpatient settings during a 6-week physiotherapy block. Children ages 3-6 years (n = 10; cerebral palsy or related disorder, Gross Motor Function Classification System level IV) will be recruited by circle of care invitations to participate. Study indicators/outcomes will focus on evaluation of: (i) clinical feasibility, safety, and acceptability of intervention; (ii) prepost intervention motor/functional outcomes; (iii) pre-post intervention brain structure characterization and resting state brain connectivity; (iv) muscle activity characterization during Trexo-assisted gait and natural assisted gait; (v) heart rate during Trexo-assisted gait and natural assisted gait; and (vi) user experience and perceptions of physiotherapists, children, and parents. Discussion: This will be the first study to investigate feasibility indicators, outcomes, and experiences of Trexo-based physiotherapy in a school and outpatient context with children who have mobility challenges. It will explore the possibility of experience-dependent neuroplasticity in the context of gait rehabilitation, as well as associated functional and muscular outcomes. Finally, the study will address important questions about clinical utility and future adoption of the device from the physiotherapists' perspective, comfort and engagement from the children's perspective, and the impressions of parents about the value of introducing this technology as an early intervention. Background: Decision-making under risk is a common challenge. It is known that risk-taking behavior varies between contexts of reward and punishment, yet the mechanisms underlying this asymmetry in risk sensitivity remain unclear. Methods: This study used a monetary task to investigate neurochemical mechanisms and brain dynamics underpinning risk sensitivity. Twenty-eight participants engaged in a task requiring selection of visual stimuli to maximize monetary gains and minimize monetary losses. We modeled participant trial-and-error processes using reinforcement learning. Results: Participants with higher subjective utility parameters showed risk preference in the gain domain (r = -0.59) and risk avoidance in the loss domain (r = -0.77). Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) revealed that risk avoidance in the loss domain was associated with γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the ventral striatum (r = -0.42), but not in the insula (r = -0.15). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we tested whether risk-sensitive brain dynamics contribute to participant risky choices. Energy landscape analyses demonstrated that higher switching rates between brain states, including the striatum and insula, were correlated with risk avoidance in the loss domain (r = -0.59), a relationship not observed in the gain domain (r = -0.02). Conclusions: These findings from MRS and fMRI suggest that distinct mechanisms are involved in gain/loss decision making, mediated by subcortical neurometabolite levels and brain dynamic transitions. A low arousal threshold (LAT) is a pathophysiological trait of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that may be associated with brainstem ascending reticular activating system-cortical functional connectivity changes. We evaluated resting-state connectivity between the brainstem nuclei and 105 cortical/subcortical regions in OSA patients with or without a LAT and healthy controls. Twenty-five patients with moderate to severe OSA with an apnea–hypopnea index between 20 and 40/hr (15 with and 10 without a LAT) and 15 age- and sex-matched controls were evaluated. Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging after overnight polysomnography. Three brainstem nuclei—the locus coeruleus (LC), laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg), and ventral tegmental area (VTA)—associated with OSA in our previous study were used as seeds. Functional connectivity values of the two brainstem nuclei (LC and LDTg) significantly differed among the three groups. The connectivity of the LC with the precuneus was stronger in OSA patients than in controls regardless of the concomitant LAT. The connectivity between the LDTg and the posterior cingulate cortex was also stronger in OSA patients regardless of the LAT. Moreover, OSA patients without a LAT showed stronger LDTg-posterior cingulate cortex connectivity than those with a LAT (post hoc p = 0.013), and this connectivity strength was negatively correlated with the minimum oxygen saturation in OSA patients (r = − 0.463, p = 0.023). The LAT in OSA patients was associated with altered LDTg-posterior cingulate cortex connectivity. This result may suggested that cholinergic activity may play a role in the LAT in OSA patients. Summary The advent of modern data collection and processing techniques has seen the size, scale and complexity of data grow exponentially. A seminal step in leveraging these rich datasets for downstream inference is understanding the characteristics of the data which are repeatable—the aspects of the data that are able to be identified under duplicated analyses. Conflictingly, the utility of traditional repeatability measures, such as the intra‐class correlation coefficient, under these settings is limited. In recent work, novel data repeatability measures have been introduced in the context where a set of subjects are measured twice or more, including: fingerprinting, rank sums and generalisations of the intra‐class correlation coefficient. However, the relationships between, and the best practices among, these measures remains largely unknown. In this manuscript, we formalise a novel repeatability measure, discriminability. We show that it is deterministically linked with the intra‐class correlation coefficients under univariate random effect models and has the desired property of optimal accuracy for inferential tasks using multivariate measurements. Additionally, we overview and systematically compare existing repeatability statistics with discriminability, using both theoretical results and simulations. We show that the rank sum statistic is deterministically linked to a consistent estimator of discriminability. The statistical power of permutation tests derived from these measures are compared numerically under Gaussian and non‐Gaussian settings, with and without simulated batch effects. Motivated by both theoretical and empirical results, we provide methodological recommendations for each benchmark setting to serve as a resource for future analyses. We believe these recommendations will play an important role towards improving repeatability in fields such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, genomics, pharmacology and more. How SES modifies the relationship between early hippocampal development and cognition remains poorly understood. This study examined associations between SES, structural and functional development of neonatal hippocampus, and 18‐month cognition in very preterm neonates.In total, 179 preterm neonates were followed prospectively. Structural and resting‐state functional MRI were obtained early‐in‐life and at term‐equivalent age (median 32.9 and 41.1 weeks post‐menstrual age) to calculate anterior and posterior hippocampal volumes and hippocampal functional connectivity strength. Eighteen‐month cognition was assessed via Bayley‐III. Longitudinal statistical analysis using generalized estimating equations, accounting for birth gestational age, post‐menstrual age at scan, sex, and motion, was performed.SES, measured as maternal education level, modified associations between anterior but not posterior hippocampal volumes and 18‐month cognition (interaction term p = 0.005), and between hippocampal connectivity and cognition (interaction term p = 0.05). Greater anterior hippocampal volumes and hippocampal connectivity were associated with higher cognitive scores only in the lowest SES group. Maternal education alone did not predict neonatal hippocampal volume from early‐in‐life and term.SES modified the relationship between neonatal hippocampal development and 18‐month cognition in very preterm neonates. The lack of direct association between maternal education and neonatal hippocampal volumes indicates that socio‐environmental factors beyond the neonatal period contribute to modifying the relationship between hippocampal development and cognition. Introduction: Percussionists stand out for their expertise in rhythm, with the network for musical rhythm (NMR) serving a vital neurological function in their improvisation, which is deeply rooted in comprehensive musical knowledge. Our research examines the central representations of various improvisation tactics used by percussionists and investigates the interactions between the NMR and other relevant neural networks. Methods: Twenty-five percussionists participated in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) sessions, which included two cognitive strategies of improvisation. Structural improvisation (SIMP) emphasized rhythmic patterns, while free improvisation (FIMP) focused on musical spontaneity. Sight-reading scenario served as the reference condition. Paired t-tests were utilized for comparative analyses. Results: The findings revealed a dynamic interplay characterized by increased activity in the executive control network and NMR, along with decreased activity in the default mode network during SIMP. During FIMP, heightened activity was observed in the executive control network, NMR, limbic, and memory systems. In both SIMP vs. sight-reading and FIMP vs. sight-reading comparisons, the visual network's activity decreased, a trend also observed in the comparative analysis of FIMP vs. SIMP. Discussion: In SIMP, percussionists leverage external rhythmic signals, resulting in heightened NMR and ECN activity and reduced DMN activity. In contrast, FIMP is characterized by a rise in activity within the NMR, ECN, limbic system, memory system, and reward system, underscoring the vital roles of motivation and memory in the rapid production of spontaneous musical ideas within set frameworks. The diminished activity in the visual network during FIMP compared to SIMP suggests less reliance on visual stimuli in FIMP. Introduction: Exploring gender differences in cognitive abilities offers vital insights into human brain functioning. Methods: Our study utilized advanced techniques like magnetic resonance thermometry, standard working memory n-back tasks, and functional MRI to investigate if gender-based variations in brain temperature correlate with distinct neuronal responses and working memory capabilities. Results: We observed a significant decrease in average brain temperature in males during working memory tasks, a phenomenon not seen in females. Although changes in female brain temperature were significantly lower than in males, we found an inverse relationship between the absolute temperature change (ATC) and cognitive performance, alongside a correlation with blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal change induced by neural activity. This suggests that in females, ATC is a crucial determinant for the link between cognitive performance and BOLD responses, a linkage not evident in males. However, we also observed additional female specific BOLD responses aligned with comparable task performance to that of males. Discussion: Our results suggest that females compensate for their brain's heightened temperature sensitivity by activating additional neuronal networks to support working memory. This study not only underscores the complexity of gender differences in cognitive processing but also opens new avenues for understanding how temperature fluctuations influence brain functionality. The primary visual cortex (V1) in blindness is engaged in a wide spectrum of tasks and sensory modalities, including audition, touch, language, and memory. This widespread involvement raises questions regarding the constancy of its role and whether it might exhibit flexibility in its function over time, connecting to diverse network functions specific to task demands. This would suggest that reorganized V1 assumes a role like multiple-demand system regions. Alternatively, varying patterns of plasticity in blind V1 may be attributed to individual factors, with different blind individuals recruiting V1 preferentially for different functions. In support of this, we recently showed that V1 functional connectivity (FC) varies greatly across blind individuals. But do these represent stable individual patterns of plasticity, or are they driven more by instantaneous changes, like a multiple-demand system now inhabiting V1? Here, we tested whether individual FC patterns from the V1 of blind individuals are stable over time. We show that over two years, FC from the V1 is unique and highly stable in a small sample of repeatedly sampled congenitally blind individuals. Further, using multivoxel pattern analysis, we demonstrate that the unique reorganization patterns of these individuals allow decoding of participant identity. Together with recent evidence for substantial individual differences in V1 connectivity, this indicates that there may be a consistent role for V1 in blindness, which may differ for each individual. Further, it suggests that the variability in visual reorganization in blindness across individuals could be used to seek stable neuromarkers for sight rehabilitation and assistive approaches. Introduction: Cognitive models have proposed that behavioral tasks can be categorized along at least three dimensions: the sensory-motor modality of the information, its representational format (e.g., location vs. identity), and the cognitive processes that transform it (e.g., response selection). Moreover, we can quickly and flexibly encode, represent, or manipulate information along any of these dimensions. How is this flexibility in encoding such information implemented in the cerebral cortex? Methods: To address this question, we devised a series of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments in each of which participants performed two distinct tasks that diered along one of the three dimensions. Results: Using multivariate pattern analysis of the fMRI data, we were able to decode between tasks along at least one task dimension within each of the cortical regions activated by these tasks. Moreover, the multiple demand network, a system of brain regions previously associated with flexible task encoding, was largely composed of closely juxtaposed sets of voxels that were specialized along each of the three tested task dimensions. Resting-state brain networks (RSNs) have been widely applied in health and disease, but the interpretation of RSNs in terms of the underlying neural activity is unclear. To address this fundamental question, we conducted simultaneous recordings of whole-brain resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) and electrophysiology signals in two separate brain regions of rats. Our data reveal that for both recording sites, spatial maps derived from band-specific local field potential (LFP) power can account for up to 90% of the spatial variability in RSNs derived from rsfMRI signals. Surprisingly, the time series of LFP band power can only explain to a maximum of 35% of the temporal variance of the local rsfMRI time course from the same site. In addition, regressing out time series of LFP power from rsfMRI signals has minimal impact on the spatial patterns of rsfMRI-based RSNs. This disparity in the spatial and temporal relationships between resting-state electrophysiology and rsfMRI signals suggests that electrophysiological activity alone does not fully explain the effects observed in the rsfMRI signal, implying the existence of an rsfMRI component contributed by 'electrophysiology-invisible' signals. Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive, compulsive behaviors, with childhood trauma recognized as a contributing factor to its pathophysiology. This study aimed to delineate brain functional aberrations in OCD patients and explore the association between these abnormalities and childhood trauma, to gain insights into the neural underpinnings of OCD. Forty-eight drug-naive OCD patients and forty-two healthy controls (HC) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and clinical assessments, including the Yale–Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y–BOCS) and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF). Compared to HCs, OCD patients exhibited significantly decreased amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in the right cerebellum, decreased regional homogeneity (ReHo) in the right cerebellum and right superior occipital lobes (FWE-corrected p < 0.05), which negatively correlated with Y–BOCS scores (p < 0.05). Furthermore, cerebellar ALFF negatively correlated with the CTQ emotional abuse subscale (r = − 0.514, p < 0.01). Mediation analysis revealed that cerebellar ALFF mediated the relationship between CTQ-emotional abuse and Y–BOCS (good model fit: R2 = 0.231, MSE = 14.311, F = 5.721, p < 0.01; direct effect, c′ = 0.153, indirect effect, a*b = 0.191). Findings indicated abnormal spontaneous and regional cerebellar activity in OCD, suggesting childhood trauma impacts OCD symptoms through cerebellar neural remodeling, highlighting its importance for clinical treatment selection. Film cognition explores the influence of cinematic elements, such as editing and film color, on viewers' perception. The Kuleshov effect, a famous example of how editing influences viewers' emotional perception, was initially proposed to support montage theory through the Kuleshov experiment. This effect, which has since been recognized as a manifestation of point-of-view (POV) editing practices, posits that the emotional interpretation of neutral facial expressions is influenced by the accompanying emotional scene in a face-scene-face sequence. However, concerns persist regarding the validity of previous studies, often employing inauthentic film materials like static images, leaving the question of its existence in authentic films unanswered. This study addresses these concerns by utilizing authentic films in two experiments. In Experiment 1, multiple film clips were captured under the guidance of a professional film director and seamlessly integrated into authentic film sequences. 59 participants viewed these face-scene-face film sequences and were tasked with rating the valence and emotional intensity of neutral faces. The findings revealed that the accompanying fearful or happy scenes significantly influence the interpretation of emotion on neutral faces, eliciting perceptions of negative or positive emotions from the neutral face. These results affirm the existence of the Kuleshov effect within authentic films. In Experiment 2, 31 participants rated the valence and arousal of neutral faces while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The behavioral results confirm the Kuleshov effect in the MRI scanner, while the neural data identify neural correlates that support its existence at the neural level. These correlates include the cuneus, precuneus, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, post cingulate gyrus, orbitofrontal cortex, fusiform gyrus, and insula. These findings also underscore the contextual framing inherent in the Kuleshov effect. Overall, the study integrates film theory and cognitive neuroscience experiments, providing robust evidence supporting the existence of the Kuleshov effect through both subjective ratings and objective neuroimaging measurements. This research also contributes to a deeper understanding of the impact of film editing on viewers' emotional perception from the contemporary POV editing practices and neurocinematic perspective, advancing the knowledge of film cognition.
