We present a multi-wavelength analysis of MCG+11-11-032, a nearby AGN with the unique classification of both a binary and a dual AGN candidate. With new Chandra observations we aim to resolve any dual AGN system via imaging data, and search for signs of a binary AGN via analysis of the X-ray spectrum. Analyzing the Chandra spectrum, we find no evidence of previously suggested double-peaked Fe K$\alpha$ lines; the spectrum is instead best fit by an absorbed powerlaw with a single Fe K$\alpha$ line, as well as an additional line centered at $\approx$7.5 keV. The Chandra observation reveals faint, soft, and extended X-ray emission, possibly linked to low-level nuclear outflows. Further analysis shows evidence for a compact, hard source -- MCG+11-11-032 X2 -- located 3.27'' from the primary AGN. Modeling MCG+11-11-032 X2 as a compact source, we find that it is relatively luminous ($L_{\text{2$-$10 keV}} = 1.52_{-0.48}^{+0.96}\times 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$), and the location is coincident with an compact and off-nuclear source resolved in Hubble Space Telescope infrared (F105W) and ultraviolet (F621M, F547M) bands. Pairing our X-ray results with a 144 MHz radio detection at the host galaxy location, we observe X-ray and radio properties similar to those of ESO 243-49 HLX-1, suggesting that MCG+11-11-032 X2 may be a hyper-luminous X-ray source. This detection with Chandra highlights the importance of a high-resolution X-ray imager, and how previous binary AGN candidates detected with large-aperture instruments benefit from high-resolution follow-up. The Chandra Source Catalog (CSC) is a virtual X-ray astrophysics facility that enables both detailed individual source studies and statistical studies of large samples of X-ray sources detected in ACIS and HRC-I imaging observations obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The catalog provides carefully-curated, high-quality, and uniformly calibrated and analyzed tabulated positional, spatial, photometric, spectral, and temporal source properties, as well as science-ready X-ray data products. The latter includes multiple types of source- and field-based FITS format products that can be used as a basis for further research, significantly simplifying followup analysis of scientifically meaningful source samples. We discuss in detail the algorithms used for the CSC Release 2 Series, including CSC 2.0, which includes 317,167 unique X-ray sources on the sky identified in observations released publicly through the end of 2014, and CSC 2.1, which adds Chandra data released through the end of 2021 and expands the catalog to 407,806 sources. Besides adding more recent observations, the CSC Release 2 Series includes multiple algorithmic enhancements that provide significant improvements over earlier releases. The compact source sensitivity limit for most observations is ~5 photons over most of the field of view, which is ~2x fainter than Release 1, achieved by co-adding observations and using an optimized source detection approach. A Bayesian X-ray aperture photometry code produces robust fluxes even in crowded fields and for low count sources. We explore the evolution of the ~107 degree hot gas in normal galaxies out to redshift = 0.5 (lookback time = 5 Gyr), using X-ray luminosity functions (XLF) built from a sample of 575 normal galaxies with z < 0.6 detected in five high galactic latitude Chandra wide-field surveys. After estimating the emission due to the hot gas component (reducing the sample to ~400 galaxies), we compared the XLF in three redshift bins (z = 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5), finding increases in the number of galaxies per unit co-moving volume from z = 0.1 to 0.3 and then from z = 0.3 to 0.5. These XLF changes suggest a significant (~5s) X-ray luminosity evolution of the hot gas, with LX,GAS decreasing by a factor of 6-10 in the last 5 Gyr (from z = 0.5 to 0.1). The relative abundance of LX,GAS~1041 erg s-1 galaxies at higher z, suggests that high z, moderate LX,GAS galaxies may be the optimal target to solve the missing baryon problem. In early-type galaxies, this observational trend is qualitatively consistent with (but larger than) the expected time-dependent mass-loss rate in cooling flow models without AGN feedback. We report the identification of a quasar overdensity in the BOSSJ0210 field, dubbed Cosmic Himalayas, consisting of 11 quasars at $z=2.16-2.20$, the densest overdensity of quasars ($17\sigma$) in the $\sim$10,000 deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We present the spatial distributions of galaxies and quasars and an HI absorption map of the intergalactic medium (IGM). On the map of 465 galaxies selected from the MAMMOTH-Subaru survey, we find two galaxy density peaks that do not fall on the quasar overdensity but instead exist at the northwest and southeast sides, approximately 25 $h^{-1}$ comoving-Mpc apart from the quasar overdensity. With a spatial resolution of 15 $h^{-1}$ comoving Mpc in projection, we produce a three-dimensional HI tomography map by the IGM Ly$\alpha$ forest in the spectra of 23 SDSS/eBOSS quasars behind the quasar overdensity. Surprisingly, the quasar overdensity coincides with neither an absorption peak nor a transmission peak of IGM HI but lies near the border separating opaque and transparent volumes, with the more luminous quasars located in an environment with lesser IGM HI. Hence remarkably, the overdensity region traced by the 11 quasars, albeit all in coherently active states, has no clear coincidence with peaks of galaxies or HI absorption densities. Current physical scenarios with mixtures of HI overdensities and quasar photoionization cannot fully interpret the emergence of Cosmic Himalayas, suggesting this peculiar structure is an excellent laboratory to unveil the interplay between galaxies, quasars, and the IGM., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJ, comments are welcome

We present the analysis of the rest frame ultraviolet and optical spectra of 30 bright blue quasars at $z\sim3$, selected to examine the suitability of AGN as cosmological probes. In our previous works, we found an unexpectedly high fraction ($\approx 25 \%$) of X-ray weak quasars in the sample. The latter sources also display a flatter UV continuum and a broader and fainter CIV profile in the archival UV data with respect to their X-ray normal counterparts. Here we present new observations with the LBT in both the $zJ$ (rest-frame $\simeq$2300-3100 $\rm \mathring{A}$) and the $K_S$ ($\simeq$4750-5350 $\rm \mathring{A}$) bands. We estimated black hole masses ($M_{\rm BH}$) and Eddington ratios ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$) from the from the H$\beta$ and MgII emission lines, finding that our $z\sim3$ quasars are on average highly accreting ($\langle \lambda_{\rm Edd} \rangle\simeq 1.2$ and $\langle M_{\rm BH} \rangle\simeq 10^{9.7}M_\odot$), with no difference in $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ or $M_{\rm BH}$ between X-ray weak and X-ray normal quasars. From the $zJ$ spectra, we derive flux and equivalent width of MgII and FeII, finding that X-ray weak quasars display higher FeII/MgII ratios with respect to typical quasars. FeII/MgII ratios of X-ray normal quasars are instead consistent with other estimates up to $z\simeq6.5$, corroborating the idea of already chemically mature BLRs at early cosmic time. From the $K_S$ spectra, we find that all the X-ray weak quasars present generally weaker [OIII] emission (EW<10 $\rm \mathring{A}$) than the normal ones. The sample as a whole, however, abides by the known X-ray/[OIII] luminosity correlation, hence the different [OIII] properties are likely due to an intrinsically weaker [OIII] emission in X-ray weak objects, associated to the shape of the spectral energy distribution. X-ray appearance of normal galaxies is mainly determined by X-ray binaries powered by accretion onto a neutron star or a stellar mass black hole. Their populations scale with the star-formation rate and stellar mass of the host galaxy and their X-ray luminosity distributions show a significant split between star-forming and passive galaxies, both facts being consequences of the dichotomy between high- and low-mass X-ray binaries. Metallicity, IMF and stellar age dependencies, and dynamical formation channels add complexity to this picture. The numbers of high-mass X-ray binaries observed in star-forming galaxies indicate quite high probability for a massive star to become an accretion powered X-ray source once upon its lifetime. This explains the unexpectedly high contribution of X-ray binaries to the Cosmic X-ray Background, of the order of $\sim 10\%$, mostly via X-ray emission of faint star-forming galaxies located at moderate redshifts which may account for the unresolved part of the CXB. We present an extensive and well-characterized Chandra X-ray Galaxy Catalog (CGC) of 8557 galaxy candidates in the redshift range z ~ 0.04 - 0.7, optical luminosity 1010 - 1011 Lro, and X-ray luminosity (0.5-7 keV) LX = 2x1040 - 2x1043 erg s-1. We estimate ~5% false match fraction and contamination by QSOs. The CGC was extracted from the Chandra Source Catalog version 2 (CSC2) by cross-correlating with optical and IR all-sky survey data, including SDSS, PanSTARRS, DESI Legacy, and WISE. Our selection makes use of two main criteria that we have tested on the subsample with optical spectroscopical identification. (1) A joint selection based on X-ray luminosity (LX) and X-ray to optical flux ratio (FXO), which recovers 63% of the spectroscopically classified galaxies with a small contamination fraction (7%), a significant improvement over methods using LX or FXO alone (< 50% recovery). (2) A joint W1-W2 (W12) WISE color and LX selection that proves effective in excluding QSOs and improves our selection by recovering 72% of the spectroscopically classified galaxies and reducing the contamination fraction (4%). Of the CGC, 24% was selected by means of optical spectroscopy; 30% on the basis of LX, FXO, and W12; and 46% by using either the LX-FXO or the LX-W12 selection criteria. We have individually examined the data for galaxies with z < 0.1, which may include more than one CSC2 X-ray source, leading to the exclusion of 110 local galaxies. X-ray bright optically normal galaxies (XBONGs) are galaxies with X-ray luminosities consistent with those of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) but no evidence of AGN optical emission lines. Crossmatching the Chandra Source Catalog version 2 (CSC2) with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) sample of spectroscopically classified galaxies, we have identified 817 XBONG candidates with LX > 1042 erg s-1 and X-ray to optical flux ratio FXO > 0.1. Comparisons with WISE colors and NIR, optical, UV, and radio luminosities show that the loci of XBONGs are in-between those of control samples of normal galaxies and quasars and are consistent with low-luminosity quasars. We find that 43% of the XBONG sample have X-ray colors suggesting NH > 1022 cm-2, double the fraction in the QSO sample, suggesting that a large fraction of XBONG are highly obscured AGNs. However, ~50% of the XBONGs are not obscured and have X-ray colors harder than those of normal galaxies. Some of these XBONGs have spatially extended X-ray emission. These characteristics suggest that they may be unidentified galaxy groups and clusters. Using the X-ray luminosity functions of QSOs and galaxies/groups/clusters, we estimate the approximate fraction of extended XBONGs to be < 20%. We present $Chandra$ ACIS imaging spectroscopy of the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy Mrk 34. We identify spatially and spectrally resolved features in the band that includes Fe K$\alpha$, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. These features indicate high-velocity ($\gtrsim15,000\,\rm{km\,s}^{-1}$ line-of-sight) material separated spanning $\sim$0.5 arcsec, within $\sim200$ pc of the nucleus. This outflow could have deprojected velocities $\sim12-28\times$ greater than the [O III] emitting outflows, and could potentially dominate the kinetic power in the outflow. This emission may point to the origins of the optical and X-ray winds observed at larger radii, and could indicate a link between ultra-fast outflows and AGN feedback on $\gtrsim$kpc scales., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Sub-arcsecond imaging of the X-ray emission in the type 2 AGN Mrk 78 with Chandra shows complex structure with spectral variations on scales from $\sim$200 pc to $\sim$ 2 kpc. Overall the X-ray emission is aligned E-W with the radio (3.6 cm) and narrow emission line region as mapped in [OIII], with a marked E-W asymmetry. The Eastern X-ray emission is mostly in a compact knot coincident with the location where the radio source is deflected, while the Western X-ray emission forms a loop or shell $\sim$2 kpc from the nucleus with radius $\sim$0.7 kpc. There is suggestive evidence of shocks in both the Eastern knot and the Western arc. Both these positions coincide with large changes in the velocities of the [OIII] outflow. We discuss possible reasons why the X-ray shocks on the Western side occur $\sim1$ kpc farther out than on the Eastern side. We estimate that the thermal energy injected by the shocks into the interstellar medium corresponds to $0.05-0.6$% of the AGN bolometric luminosity., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

We report the discovery of statistically significant spatial structures in the projected two-dimensional distributions of the Globular Cluster (GC) systems of 10 among the brightest galaxies in the Fornax Cluster. We use a catalog of GCs extracted from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Fornax Cluster Survey (ACSFCS) imaging data. We characterize the size, shape and location relative to the host galaxies of the GC structures and suggest a classification based on their morphology and location that is suggestive of different formation mechanisms. We also investigate the GC structures in the context of the positions of their host galaxies relative to the general spatial distributions of galaxies and intra-cluster globular clusters in the Fornax Cluster. We finally estimate the dynamical masses of the progenitors of some GC structures, under the assumption that they are the relics of past accretion events of satellite galaxies by their hosts., Comment: 40 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a study of the relation between X-rays and ultraviolet emission in quasars for a sample of broad-line, radio-quiet objects obtained from the cross-match of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR14 with the latest Chandra Source Catalog 2.0 (2,332 quasars) and the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey (273 quasars). The non-linear relation between the ultraviolet (at 2500 A, $L_{O}$) and the X-ray (at 2 keV, $L_{X}$) emission in quasars has been proved to be characterised by a smaller intrinsic dispersion than the observed one, as long as a homogeneous selection, aimed at preventing the inclusion of contaminants in the sample, is fulfilled. By leveraging on the low background of Chandra, we performed a complete spectral analysis of all the data available for the SDSS-CSC2.0 quasar sample (i.e. 3,430 X-ray observations), with the main goal of reducing the uncertainties on the source properties (e.g. flux, spectral slope). We analysed whether any evolution of the $L_{X}-L_{O}$ relation exists by dividing the sample in narrow redshift intervals across the redshift range spanned by our sample, $z \simeq 0.5-4$. We find that the slope of the relation does not evolve with redshift and it is consistent with the literature value of $0.6$ over the explored redshift range, implying that the mechanism underlying the coupling of the accretion disc and hot corona is the same at the different cosmic epochs. We also find that the dispersion decreases when examining the highest redshifts, where only pointed observations are available. These results further confirm that quasars are `standardisable candles', that is we can reliably measure cosmological distances at high redshifts where very few cosmological probes are available., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We analyse the properties of the CIV broad emission line in connection with the X-ray emission of 30 bright SDSS quasars at z~3.0-3.3 with pointed XMM-Newton observations, which were selected to test the suitability of AGN as cosmological tools. In our previous work, we found that a large fraction (~25%) of the quasars in this sample are X-ray underluminous by factors of >3-10. As absorbing columns of >10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be safely ruled out, their weakness is most likely intrinsic. Here we explore possible correlations between the UV and X-ray features of these sources to investigate the origin of X-ray weakness. We fit their UV SDSS spectra and analyse their CIV properties (e.g., equivalent width, EW; line peak velocity, $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$) as a function of the X-ray photon index and 2-10 keV flux. We confirm the trends of CIV $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$ and EW with UV luminosity at 2500 angstrom for both X-ray weak and X-ray normal quasars, as well as the correlation between X-ray weakness and CIV EW. In contrast to some recent work, we do not observe any clear relation between the 2-10 keV luminosity and $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$. We find a correlation between the hard X-ray flux and the integrated CIV flux for X-ray normal quasars, whilst X-ray weak quasars deviate from the main trend by more than 0.5 dex. We argue that X-ray weakness might be interpreted in a starved X-ray corona picture associated with an ongoing disc-wind phase. If the wind is ejected in the vicinity of the black hole, the extreme-UV radiation that reaches the corona will be depleted, depriving the corona of seeds photons and generating an X-ray weak quasar. Yet, at the largest UV luminosities (>10$^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$), there will still be an ample reservoir of ionising photons that can explain the excess CIV emission observed in the X-ray weak quasars with respect to normal sources of similar X-ray luminosities., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures (with 3 more figures in the Appendix), abstract abridged. The distribution of hot interstellar medium in early-type galaxies bears the imprint of the various astrophysical processes it underwent during its evolution. The X-ray observations of these galaxies have identified various structural features related to AGN and stellar feedback and environmental effects such as merging and sloshing. In our XMM-Newton Galaxy Atlas (NGA) project, we analyze archival observations of 38 ETGs, utilizing the high sensitivity and large field of view of XMM-Newton to construct spatially resolved 2D spectral maps of the hot gas halos. To illustrate our NGA data products in conjunction with the Chandra Galaxy Atlas (Kim et al. 2019), we describe two distinct galaxies - NGC 4636 and NGC 1550, in detail. We discuss their evolutionary history with a particular focus on the asymmetric distribution of metal-enriched, low-entropy gas caused by sloshing and AGN- driven uplift. We present Chandra imaging and spectral observations of Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388. Three extended X-ray structures around the nucleus on kpc scale are well imaged, allowing an in-depth spatially resolved study. Both the extended hard continuum and the Fe K$\alpha$ line show similar morphology, consistent with a scenario where the ionizing emission from nucleus is reprocessed by circumnuclear cold gas, resulting in a weak reflection continuum and an associated neutral Fe K$\alpha$ line. This has been seen in other Compton thick active galactic nuclei (AGN), but NGC 4388 is one of the rare cases with a lower column density ($N_{\rm H} < 1.25\times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) along the line of sight. Significant differences in equivalent width of the Fe K$\alpha$ emission line are found for the nuclear and extended regions, which could be ascribed to different column densities or scattering angles with respect to the line of sight, rather than variations in iron abundances. The north-east and west extended structures are aligned with the galactic disk and dust lane in the HST $V-H$ map, and located at the peak of molecular gas distribution. The morphology implies that the kpc-scale radio outflow may have compressed the interstellar gas and produced clumps working as the reflector to enhance line emission. Using [OIV] emission as a proxy of the AGN intrinsic luminosity, we find that both of the extended Fe K$\alpha$ emission and reflection continuum are linearly correlated with the [OIV] luminosity, indicating a connection between the AGN and the extended emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 15 pages, 11 figures, and 5 tables

The biconical radiation pattern extending from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) may strongly photoionize the circumnuclear interstellar medium (ISM) and stimulate emission from the narrow line region (NLR). Observations of the NLR may provide clues to the structure of dense material that preferentially obscures the bicone at certain angles, and may reveal the presence of processes in the ISM tied to AGN accretion and feedback. Ground-based integral field units (IFUs) may study these processes via well-understood forbidden diagnostic lines such as [O III] and [S II], but scales of $\sim10$s of pc remain challenging to spatially resolve at these wavelengths for all but the nearest AGN. We present recent narrow filter Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of diagnostic forbidden ([O III], [S II]) and Balmer (H$\alpha$, H$\beta$) lines in the NLR of IC 5063. This AGN's jet inclination into the plane of the galaxy provides an important laboratory for strong AGN-host interactions. We find evidence for a low-ionization loop which emits brightly in [S II] and [N II], and which may arise from plume-like hot outflows that ablate ISM from the galactic plane before escaping laterally. We also present spatially resolved Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagnostic maps of the IC 5063 NLR. These maps suggest a sharp transition to lower-ionization states outside the jet path, and that such emission is dominated by $\sim10-40$ pc clumps and filamentary structure at large (>>25{\deg}) angles from the bicone axis. On Earth near sunset, the sun may cast "crepuscular rays" such that clouds near the horizon obscure the origin of light scattered in bright rays. In principle, AGN should be able to produce similar effects. Using new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) near-infrared and optical observations, we show that the active galaxy IC 5063 contains broad radial rays extending to $\gtrsim$11 kpc from the nucleus. We argue that the bright rays may arise from dusty scattering of continuum emission from the active nucleus, while the dark rays are due to shadowing near the nucleus, possibly by a warped torus. Using the data products of the Chandra Galaxy Atlas (Kim et al. 2019a), we have investigated the radial profiles of the hot gas temperature in 60 early type galaxies. Considering the characteristic temperature and radius of the peak, dip, and break (when scaled by the gas temperature and virial radius of each galaxy), we propose a universal temperature profile of the hot halo in ETGs. In this scheme, the hot gas temperature peaks at RMAX = 35 +/- 25 kpc (or ~0.04 RVIR) and declines both inward and outward. The temperature dips (or breaks) at RMIN (or RBREAK) = 3 - 5 kpc (or ~0.006 RVIR). The mean slope between RMIN (RBREAK) and RMAX is 0.3 +/- 0.1. Allowing for selection effects and observational limits, we find that the universal temperature profile can describe the temperature profiles of 72% (possibly up to 82%) of our ETG sample. The remaining ETGs (18%) with irregular or monotonically declining profiles do not fit the universal profile and require another explanation. The temperature gradient inside RMIN (RBREAK) varies widely, indicating different degrees of additional heating at small radii. Investigating the nature of the hot core (HC with a negative gradient inside RMIN), we find that HC is most clearly visible in small galaxies. Searching for potential clues associated with stellar, AGN feedback, and gravitational heating, we find that HC may be related to recent star formation. But we see no clear evidence that AGN feedback and gravitational heating play any significant role for HC., Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures, accepted or publication in MNRAS

The discoveries made over the past 20 years by Chandra and XMM-Newton surveys in conjunction with multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopic data available in the same fields have significantly changed the view of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) and galaxy connection. These discoveries have opened up several exciting questions that are beyond the capabilities of current X-ray telescopes and will need to be addressed by observatories in the next two decades. As new observatories peer into the early Universe, we will begin to understand the physics and demographics of SMBH infancy (at $z>6$) and investigate the influence of their accretion on the formation of the first galaxies ($\S$ 2.1). The hot ISM in early type galaxies (ETGs) plays a crucial role in understanding their formation and evolution. The structural features of the hot gas identified by Chandra observations point to key evolutionary mechanisms, (e.g., AGN and stellar feedback, merging history). In our Chandra Galaxy Atlas (CGA) project, taking full advantage of the Chandra capabilities, we systematically analyzed the archival Chandra data of 70 ETGs and produced uniform data products for the hot gas properties. The primary data products are spatially resolved 2D spectral maps of the hot gas from individual galaxies. We emphasize that new features can be identified in the spectral maps which are not readily visible in the surface brightness maps. The high-level images can be viewed at the dedicated CGA website, and the CGA data products can be downloaded to compare with data at other wavelengths and to perform further analyses. We present spatially resolved Chandra narrow-band imaging and imaging spectroscopy of NGC 3393. This galaxy hosts a Compton-thick Seyfert 2 AGN with sub-kpc bipolar outflows that are strongly interacting with the circumnuclear gas. We identify narrow-band excess emission associated with the Ne IX 0.905 keV transition (with likely contributions due to intermediate-state iron emission) that points to strong shocks driven by AGN feedback. Imaging spectroscopy resolves outflow-ISM interaction sites and the surrounding ISM at ~100 pc scales, and suggests the presence of a hot AGN wind above the plane at radii beyond the shock sites. The cross-cone shows evidence for reprocessing of photoionization which has passed through gaps in the torus, and also for collisionally excited plasma which may be powered by a shock-confined equatorial outflow. Deep X-ray observations at sub-arcsecond resolution (such as may be performed very efficiently by Lynx, which would also energetically resolve the complex line emission) are necessary to eliminate model degeneracies and reduce uncertainties in local feedback properties., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, 33 images, 6 tables. Using globular cluster (GC) kinematics and photometry data, we calibrate the scaling relation between the total galaxy mass (M_TOT including dark matter) and total globular cluster system mass (M_GCS) in a sample of 30 early-type galaxies (ETG), confirming a nearly linear relationship between the two physical parameters. Using samples of 83 and 57 ETGs, we investigate this scaling relation in conjunction with the previously known relations between M_TOT and the ISM X-ray luminosity and temperature, respectively. We confirm that M_GCS can be effectively used as a proxy of M_TOT. We further find that the L_X,GAS - M_TOT relation is far tighter in the subsample of core ETGs, when compared to cusp ETGs. In core ETGs (old, passively evolving stellar systems) M_TOT is significantly larger than the total stellar mass M_STAR and the correlation with the hot gas properties is driven by their dark matter mass M_DM. Cusp ETGs have typically lower LX,GAS than core ETGs. In cusp ETGs, for a given M_DM, higher L_X,GAS is associated with higher M_STAR, suggesting stellar feedback as an important secondary factor for heating the ISM. Using the M_GCS- M_TOT scaling relations we compare 272 ETGs with previous estimates of the stellar-to-halo mass relation of galaxies. Our model-independent estimate of M_TOT results in a good agreement around halo masses of 10^12 Mo, but suggest higher star formation efficiency than usually assumed both at the low and at the high halo mass ends., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, accepted in MNRAS, added new correlations with T(GAS)

We have used narrow-band [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 and H$\alpha$+[NII]$\lambda\lambda6548,84$ Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of 9 luminous (L[OIII]$>10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$) type 2 QSOs with redshifts $0.1

We present an X-ray stacking analysis of $\sim$75,000 star-forming galaxies between $0.11.3$ exhibit a significant X-ray excess indicating nuclear emission. The AGN emission is strongly correlated with stellar mass but does not exhibit an additional correlation with SFR. The hardness ratios of the high-redshift stacks indicate that the AGN are substantially obscured ($N_{\mathrm{H}}\sim10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$). These obscured AGN are not identified by IRAC color selection and have $L_X\sim10^{41}-10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, consistent with accretion at an Eddington rate of $\sim10^{-3}$ onto $10^7-10^8 M_{\odot}$ black holes. Since its inception in the early 2000, the Virtual Observatory (VO), developed as a collaboration of many national and international projects, has become a major factor in the discovery and dissemination of astronomical information worldwide. The IVOA has been coordinating all these efforts worldwide to ensure a common VO framework that enables transparent access to and interoperability of astronomy resources (data and software) around the world. The VO is not a magic solution to all astronomy data management challenges but it does bring useful solutions in many areas borne out by the fact that VO interfaces are broadly found in astronomy major data centres and projects worldwide. Astronomy data centres have been building VO services on top of their existing data services to increase interoperability with other VO-compliant data resources to take advantage of the continuous and increasing development of VO applications. VO applications have made multi-instrument and multi-wavelength science, a difficult and fruitful part of astronomy, somewhat easier. More recently, several major new astronomy projects have been directly adopting VO standards to build their data management infrastructure, giving birth to VO built-in archives. Embracing the VO framework from the beginning brings the double gain of not needing to reinvent the wheel and ensuring from the start interoperability with other astronomy VO resources. Some of the IVOA standards are also starting to be used by neighbour disciplines like planetary sciences. There is still quite a lot to be done on the VO, in particular tackling the upcoming big data challenge and how to find interoperable solutions to the new data analysis paradigm of bringing and running the software close to the data., Comment: 4 pages, no figures, ADASS 2015 conference proceedings

We present the imaging and spectroscopic analysis of the combined Chandra ACIS-S observations of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4945. We performed a spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the circumnuclear environment of the source, picturing the innermost 200 parsecs around the highly absorbed nucleus. The additional 200 ks ACIS-S data with respect to the previous campaign allowed us to map with even greater detail the central structure of this source and to discover an enhanced iron emission in the innermost nuclear region, with respect to the associated Compton reflection continuum. We revealed that the Equivalent Width of the iron K$\alpha$ line is spatially variable (ranging from 0.5 to 3 keV), on scales of tens of parsecs, likely due to the ionization state and orientation effects of the reprocessing material, with respect to the central X-ray illuminating source. A clump of highly ionized Fe XXV He-$\alpha$ is also detected, 40 parsecs east to the nucleus. We have analyzed the Chandra archival data of NGC 1132, a well-known fossil group, i.e. a system expected to be old and relaxed long after the giant elliptical galaxy assembly. Instead, the Chandra data reveal that the hot gas morphology is disturbed and asymmetrical, with a cold front following a possible bow shock. We discuss possible origins of the disturbed hot halo, including sloshing by a nearby object, merger, ram pressure by external hotter gas and nuclear outburst. We consider that the first two mechanisms are likely explanations for the disturbed hot halo, with a slight preference for a minor merger with a low impact parameter because of the match with simulations and previous optical observations. In this case, NGC 1132 may be a rare example of unusual late mergers seen in recent simulations. We present results of a joint \textit{Chandra}/\textit{XMM-Newton} analysis of the early-type galaxies NGC 4649 and NGC 5846 aimed at investigating differences between mass profiles derived from X-ray data and those from optical data, to probe the state of the hot ISM in these galaxies. If the hot ISM is at a given radius in hydrostatic equilibrium (HE) the X-ray data can be used to measure the total enclosed mass of the galaxy. Differences from optically-derived mass distributions therefore yield information about departures from HE in the hot halos. The X-ray mass profiles in different angular sectors of NGC 4649 are generally smooth with no significant azimuthal asymmetries within \(12\) kpc. Extrapolation of these profiles beyond this scale yields results consistent with the optical estimate. However, in the central region (\(r < 3\) kpc) the X-ray data underpredict the enclosed mass, when compared with the optical mass profiles. Consistent with previous results we estimate a non-thermal pressure component accounting for \(30\%\) of the gas pressure, likely linked to nuclear activity. In NGC 5846 the X-ray mass profiles show significant azimuthal asymmetries, especially in the NE direction. Comparison with optical mass profiles in this direction suggests significant departures from HE, consistent with bulk gas compression and decompression due to sloshing on \(\sim 15\) kpc scales; this effect disappears in the NW direction where the emission is smooth and extended. In this sector we find consistent X-ray and optical mass profiles, suggesting that the hot halo is not responding to strong non-gravitational forces., Comment: 38 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication on ApJ

We present an imaging and spectral analysis of the nuclear region of the ULIRG merger Arp 220, using deep \textit{Chandra}-ACIS observations summing up to \(\sim 300\mbox{ ks}\). Narrow-band imaging with sub-pixel resolution of the innermost nuclear region reveals two distinct Fe-K emitting sources, coincident with the infrared and radio nuclear clusters. These sources are separated by 1' (\(\sim 380\) pc). The X-ray emission is extended and elongated in the eastern nucleus, like the disk emission observed in millimeter radio images, suggesting starburst dominance in this region. We estimate Fe-K equivalent width \(\gtrsim 1\) keV for both sources, and observed 2-10 keV luminosities \(\sim 2\times{10}^{40}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (W) and \(\sim 3 \times {10}^{40}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (E). In the 6-7 keV band the emission from these regions is dominated by the 6.7 keV Fe \textsc{xxv} line, suggesting contribution from collisionally ionized gas. The thermal energy content of this gas is consistent with kinetic energy injection in the interstellar medium by Type II SNe. However, nuclear winds from hidden AGN (\(\varv\sim 2000 \mbox{ km}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\)) cannot be excluded. The \(3\sigma\) upper limits on the neutral Fe-K\(\alpha\) flux of the nuclear regions correspond to intrinsic AGN 2-10 keV luminosities \(< 1\times {10}^{42}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (W) and \(< 0.4\times {10}^{42}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (E). The CHandra Extended Emission Line Region Survey (CHEERS) is an X-ray study of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) designed to take full advantage of Chandra's unique angular resolution by spatially resolving feedback signatures and effects. In the second paper of a series on CHEERS target NGC 3393, we examine deep high-resolution Chandra images and compare them with Hubble narrow line images of [O III], [S II] and H$\alpha$, as well as previously-unpublished mid-ultraviolet (MUV) images. The X-rays provide unprecedented evidence that the S-shaped arms which envelope the nuclear radio outflows extend only $\lesssim$0.2'' ($\lesssim50 pc$) across. The high-resolution multiwavelength data suggest that the ENLR is a complex multi-phase structure in the circumnuclear ISM. Its ionization structure is highly stratified with respect to outflow-driven bubbles in the bicone and varies dramatically on scales of ~10 pc. Multiple findings show likely contributions from shocks to the feedback in regions where radio outflows from the AGN most directly influence the ISM. These findings include H$\alpha$ evidence for gas compression and extended MUV emission, and are in agreement with existing STIS kinematics. Here we utilise recent measures of galaxy total dynamical mass and X-ray gas luminosities (L$_{X,Gas}$) for a sample of 29 massive early-type galaxies from the SLUGGS survey to probe L$_{X,Gas}$--mass scaling relations. In particular, we investigate scalings with stellar mass, dynamical mass within 5 effective radii (R$_e$) and total virial mass. We also compare these relations with predictions from $\Lambda$CDM simulations. We find a strong linear relationship between L$_{X,Gas}$ and galaxy dynamical mass within 5 R$_e$, which is consistent with the recent cosmological simulations of Choi et al. that incorporate mechanical heating from AGN. We conclude that the gas surrounding massive early-type galaxies was shock heated as it fell into collapsing dark matter halos so that L$_{X,Gas}$ is primarily driven by the depth of a galaxy's potential well. We have mapped the extended narrow line region (ENLR) of NGC 3393 on scales of $r\lesssim4^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim1\,$kpc) from the nucleus using emission line images of H$\alpha\,\lambda6563$, [O III]$\lambda5007$, and [S II]$\lambda\lambda6717,6731$ taken with HST as part of the CHandra survey of Extended Emission line Regions in nearby Seyfert galaxies (CHEERS). By mapping these lines onto a spatially resolved Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich (BPT) diagram, we investigate the impact of feedback from a Compton-thick AGN on its circumnuclear ISM. We find the expected Seyfert-like emission within the ionization bicone ($\lesssim3^{\prime\prime}$; 770 pc). We also find a new, figure 8 shaped LINER cocoon enveloping the bicone and defining a sharp ($\lesssim100\;$pc) transition between higher and lower ionization zones. We report the discovery of a ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX; CXO J133815.6+043255) in NGC 5252. This ULX is an off-nuclear point-source, which is 22$^{\prime\prime}$ away from the center of NGC 5252, and has an X-ray luminosity of 1.5 $\times$ $10^{40}$erg s$^{-1}$. It is one of the rare examples of ULX, which exhibits clear counterparts in radio, optical, UV bands. Follow-up optical spectrum of the ULX shows strong emission lines. The redshift of [O III] emission line coincides with the systematic velocity of NGC 5252, suggesting the ULX is gravitationally bound to NGC 5252. The flux of [O III] appears to be correlated with both X-ray and radio luminosity in the same manner as ordinary AGNs, indicating that the [O III] emission is intrinsically associated with the ULX. Based on the multiwavelength data, we argue that the ULX is unlikely to be a background AGN. A more likely option is an accreting BH with a black hole mass of $\geq 10^4M_\odot$, which might be a stripped remnant of a merging dwarf galaxy., Comment: To appear in ApJ

We have re-examined the two X-ray scaling relations of early-type galaxies (ETGs), Lx - LK and Lx - T, using 61 ATLAS3D E and S0 galaxies observed with Chandra. The larger sample allows us to investigate the effect of structural and dynamical properties of ETGs in these relations. Using the sub-sample of genuine E galaxies with central surface brightness cores, slow stellar rotations and old stellar populations, we find that the scatter of the correlations is strongly reduced, yielding an extremely tight relation. For the gas-rich galaxies in this sample, this relation is consistent with recent simulations. However, the tight Lx - T relation of genuine E galaxies extends down into the Lx 1038 erg s-1 range, where simulations predict the gas to be in outflow/wind state. The observed correlation may suggest the presence of small bound hot halos even in this low luminosity range. At the high luminosity end, the Lx - T correlation of core elliptical galaxies is similar to that found in samples of cD galaxies and groups, but shifted down toward lower Lx. In particular cDs have an order of magnitude higher Lx than core galaxies for the same LK and T. We suggest that enhanced cooling in cDs could lower T to the range observed in giant Es; this conclusion is supported by the presence of extended cold gas in several cDs. Instead, in the sub-sample of coreless ETGs, Lx and T are not correlated, suggesting that both the energy input from star formation and the effect of galactic rotation and flattening may disrupt the hot ISM., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, accepted in ApJ

We present a study of the faint-end of the X-ray Luminosity Function of Low Mass X-ray binaries in the Globular Cluster system of the cD galaxy NGC 1399 by performing a stacking experiment on 618 X-ray undetected GCs, in order to verify the presence of faint LMXBs and to constrain the faint-end slope of the GC-LMXBs XLF below the individual detection threshold of $8\times10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the $0.5-8$ keV band. We obtain a significant X-ray detection for the whole GC sample, as well as for the red and blue GC subpopulations, corresponding to an average luminosity per GC $_{GC}$ of $(3.6\pm1.0)\times10^{36}\ erg\ s^{-1}$, $(6.9\pm2.1)\times10^{36}\ erg\ s^{-1}$ and $(1.7\pm0.9)\times10^{36}\ erg\ s^{-1}$, respectively for all, red and blue GCs. If LMXBs in red and blue GCs have the same average intrinsic luminosity, we derive a red/blu ratio $\simeq 3$ of GCs hosting LMXBs ($2.5\pm1.0$ or $4.1\pm2.5$ depending on the surveyed region); alternatively, assuming the fractions observed for brighter sources, we measure an average X-ray luminosity of $L_{X}=(4.3\pm1.3)\times10^{37}\ erg\ s^{-1}$ and $L_{X}=(3.4\pm1.7)\times10^{37}\ erg\ s^{-1}$ per red and blue GC-LMXBs respectively. In the assumption that the XLF follows a power-law distribution, we find that a low-luminosity break is required at $L_{X}\leq 8\times10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ both in the whole, as well as in the color-selected (red and blue) subsamples. Given the bright-end slopes measured above the X-ray completeness limit, this result is significant at $>3\sigma$ level. Our best estimates for the faint end slope are $\beta_{L}=-1.39/-1.38/-1.36$ for all/red/blue GC-LMXBs. We also find evidence that the luminosity function becomes steeper at luminosities $L_X\gtrsim 3\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, as observed in old ellipticals., Comment: In press on A&A

We present a comprehensive high spatial-resolution imaging study of globular clusters (GCs) in NGC1399, the central giant elliptical cD galaxy in the Fornax galaxy cluster, conducted with HST/ACS. Using a novel technique to construct drizzled PSF libraries for HST/ACS data, we accurately determine the fidelity of GC structural parameter measurements from detailed artificial star cluster experiments. The measurement of rh for the major fraction of the NGC1399 GC system reveals a trend of increasing rh versus galactocentric distance, Rgal, out to about 10 kpc and a flat relation beyond. This trend is very similar for blue and red GCs which are found to have a mean size ratio of rh(red)/rh(blue)=0.82+/-0.11 at all galactocentric radii from the core regions of the galaxy out to ~40 kpc. This suggests that the size difference between blue and red GCs is due to internal mechanisms related to the evolution of their constituent stellar populations. Modeling the mass density profile of NGC1399 shows that additional external dynamical mechanisms are required to limit the GC size in the galaxy halo regions to rh~2 pc. We suggest that this may be realized by an exotic GC orbit distribution function, an extended dark matter halo, and/or tidal stress induced by the increased stochasticity in the dwarf halo substructure at larger Rgal. We match our GC rh measurements with radial velocity data from the literature and find that compact GCs show a significantly smaller line-of-sight velocity dispersion, =225+/-25 km/s, than their extended counterparts, =317+/-21 km/s. We report the discovery of a remarkable ultra-compact dwarf galaxy around the massive Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M60), which we term M60-UCD1. With a dynamical mass of 2.0 x 10^8 M_sun but a half-light radius of only ~ 24 pc, M60-UCD1 is more massive than any ultra-compact dwarfs of comparable size, and is arguably the densest galaxy known in the local universe. It has a two-component structure well-fit by a sum of Sersic functions, with an elliptical, compact (r_h=14 pc; n ~ 3.3) inner component and a round, exponential, extended (r_h=49 pc) outer component. Chandra data reveal a variable central X-ray source with L_X ~ 10^38 erg/s that could be an active galactic nucleus associated with a massive black hole or a low-mass X-ray binary. Analysis of optical spectroscopy shows the object to be old (~> 10 Gyr) and of solar metallicity, with elevated [Mg/Fe] and strongly enhanced [N/Fe] that indicates light element self-enrichment; such self-enrichment may be generically present in dense stellar systems. The velocity dispersion (~ 70 km/s) and resulting dynamical mass-to-light ratio (M/L_V=4.9 +/- 0.7) are consistent with---but slightly higher than---expectations for an old, metal-rich stellar population with a Kroupa initial mass function. The presence of a massive black hole or a mild increase in low-mass stars or stellar remnants is therefore also consistent with this M/L_V. The stellar density of the galaxy is so high that no dynamical signature of dark matter is expected. However, the properties of M60-UCD1 suggest an origin in the tidal stripping of a nucleated galaxy with M_B ~ -18 to -19., Comment: ApJL, in press

We have revisited the X-ray scaling relations of early type galaxies (ETG) by investigating, for the first time, the LX,Gas - MTotal relation in a sample of 14 ETGs. In contrast to the large scatter (by a factor of 102-103) in the LX,Total - LB relation, we found a tight correlation between these physically motivated quantities with a rms deviation of a factor of 3 in LX,Gas = 1038 - 1043 erg s-1 or MTotal = a few x 1010 - a few x 1012 Mo. More striking, this relation becomes even tighter with a rms deviation of a factor of 1.3 among the gas-rich galaxies (with LX,Gas > 1040 erg s-1). In a simple power-law form, the new relation is (LX,Gas / 1040 erg s-1) = (MTotal / 3.2 x 1011 Mo)3. This relation is also consistent with the steep relation between the gas luminosity and temperature, LX,Gas ~ TGas4.5, identified by Boroson, Kim & Fabbiano (2011), if the gas is virialized. Our results indicate that the total mass of an ETG is the primary factor in regulating the amount of hot gas. Among the gas-poor galaxies (with LX,Gas < a few x 1039 erg s-1), the scatter in the LX,Gas - MTotal (and LX,Gas - TGas) relation increases, suggesting that secondary factors (e.g., rotation, flattening, star formation history, cold gas etc.) may become important., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ, minor changes from v1

We have obtained a deep, sub-arcsecond resolution X-ray image of the nuclear region of the luminous galaxy merger NGC 6240 with Chandra, which resolves the X-ray emission from the pair of active nuclei and the diffuse hot gas in great detail. We detect extended hard X-ray emission from kT~6 keV (~70 million K) hot gas over a spatial scale of 5 kpc, indicating the presence of fast shocks with velocity of ~2200 km/s. For the first time we obtain the spatial distribution of this highly ionized gas emitting FeXXV, which shows a remarkable correspondence to the large scale morphology of H_2(1-0) S(1) line emission and H\alpha filaments. Propagation of fast shocks originated in the starburst driven wind into the ambient dense gas can account for this morphological correspondence. With an observed L(0.5-8 keV)=5.3E+41 erg/s, the diffuse hard X-ray emission is 100 times more luminous than that observed in the classic starburst galaxy M82. Assuming a filling factor of 1% for the 70 MK temperature gas, we estimate its total mass (M_{hot}=1.8E+8 Msun) and thermal energy (E_{th}=6.5E+57 ergs). The total iron mass in the highly ionized plasma is M_{Fe}=4.6E+5 Msun. Both the energetics and the iron mass in the hot gas are consistent with the expected injection from the supernovae explosion during the starburst that is commensurate with its high star formation rate. Narrow-band spectral imaging with sub-pixel resolution of the Chandra-ACIS archival observation of the ULIRG merger Arp 220 strongly suggests two Compton thick nuclei, spatially coincident with the infrared and radio emitting nuclear clusters, and separated by 1" (~ 365 pc at a distance of 76 Mpc). These previously undetected highly obscured AGNs - West (W) and East (E) - are imaged, and separated from neighboring sources, in the 6-7 keV band, where the Fe-K lines dominate the emission. The western nucleus is also detected at energies above 7 keV. We estimate Fe-K equivalent width ~ 1 keV or possibly greater for both sources, and observed 2-10 keV luminosities L_X < 3.2 x 10^40 erg/s (W) and <1.3 x 10^40 erg/s (E). From the observed Fe-K lines luminosities{, and assuming on the basis of the XMM-Newton spectrum that 40% of this may be from the 6.4 keV component, we evaluate 2-10 keV intrinsic luminosities L_X ~ 1 x 10^42 erg/s (W) and L_X ~ 0.4 x 10^42 erg/s (E). The inferred X-ray luminosity is at least a factor of 3 higher than that expected from a pure starburst with the bolometric luminosity of Arp 220.
