13. U-Pb dating of middle Eocene-Pliocene multiple tectonic pulses in the Alpine foreland

Abstract

Foreland fold-and-thrust belts (FTBs) record long-lived tectono-sedimentary activity, from passive margin sedimentation, flexuring, and further evolution into wedge accretion ahead of an advancing orogen. Therefore, dating fault activity is fundamental for plate movement reconstruction, resource exploration, and earthquake hazard assessment. Here, we report U-Pb ages of syn-tectonic calcite mineralizations from four thrusts and three tear faults sampled at the regional scale across the Jura fold-and-thrust belt in the northwestern Alpine foreland (eastern France). Three regional tectonic phases are recognized in the middle Eocene-Pliocene interval: (1) pre-orogenic faulting at 48.4 +/- 1.5 and 44.7 +/- 2.6 Ma associated with the far-field effect of the Alpine or Pyrenean compression, (2) syn-orogenic thrusting at 11.4 +/- 1.1, 10.6 +/- 0.5, 9.7 +/- 1.4, 9.6 +/- 0.3, and 7.5 +/- 1.1 Ma associated with the formation of the Jura foldand-thrust belt with possible in-sequence thrust propagation, and (3) syn-orogenic tear faulting at 10.5 +/- 0.4, 9.1 +/- 6.5, 5.7 +/- 4.7, and at 4.8 +/- 1.7 Ma including the reactivation of a pre-orogenic fault at 3.9 +/- 2.9 Ma. Previously unknown faulting events at 48.4 +/- 1.5 and 44.7 +/- 2.6 Ma predate the reported late Eocene age for tectonic activity onset in the Alpine foreland by similar to 10 Myr. In addition, we date the previously inferred reactivation of pre-orogenic strike-slip faults as tear faults during Jura imbrication. 14. Pseudotachylyte in the Monte Maggiore ophiolitic unit (Alpine Corsica): a possible lateral extension of the Cima di Gratera intermediate-depth Wadati-Benioff paleo-seismic zone

Abstract

At the northern end of the Cap Corse peninsula, several klippes of ultramafic rocks (peridotite and serpentinite), among which the Monte Maggiore klippe is the least serpentinized one, rest upon continental-crust derived rocks (Centuri gneisses) and basic or metasedimentary schists (Schistes Lustrés). The Monte Maggiore ophiolitic klippe shares several characteristics with the Cima di Gratera klippe located 30 km further south. First, the two units are composed of a lherzolitic peridotite. Second, they record the same succession of metamorphic events. Third, in the Cap Corse tectonic pile, the two units occupy the highest structural position. Several differences are also observed. First, mafic rocks are significantly less abundant in the Monte Maggiore unit, where they are restricted to dykes cross-cutting the peridotite, than in the Cima di Gratera unit, where they constitute an entire sub-unit. Second, pyroxenite layers are more common at Monte Maggiore than at Cima di Gratera. Despite these differences, the Monte Maggiore and Cima di Gratera klippes can be considered as possible lateral equivalents of a single ophiolitic unit having covered the entire Cap Corse before subsequent erosion. Pseudotachylyte of seismic origin is newly discovered in the Monte Maggiore klippe. The host rock is a cataclastic serpentinized peridotite affected by a cataclastic foliation that is either flat-lying or steeply dipping. Pseudotachylyte fault veins are parallel to the host rock cataclastic foliation. The small lateral extension and the small thickness of fault veins along with frequent cross-cutting relationships suggest that the exposed pseudotachylyte most likely results from numerous small magnitude seismic events such as swarms or aftershocks rather than from large magnitude shocks. All these characteristics are also observed at the Cima di Gratera klippe where they are interpreted as the testimonies of a fossil intermediate-depth Wadati-Benioff zone at the time of subduction of the Ligurian Tethys oceanic lithosphere. Mineral assemblages that could constrain the depth of formation of the pseudotachylyte lack in the Monte Maggiore area. Despite this uncertainty, and given the similarities with the Cima di Gratera occurrences, the pseudotachylyte veins newly discovered at Monte Maggiore are tentatively related to the seismic activity linked with the subduction of the Piemonte-Ligurian oceanic lithosphere in Eocene times. This interpretation suggests that the fossil Wadati-Benioff zone could be traced further south in Alpine Corsica and further north in the Piemontese zone of the western Alps.

21. Interactions between thin- and thick-skinned tectonics at the northwestern front of the Jura fold-and-thrust belt (eastern France)

Abstract

This study investigates spatial and temporal interactions of thin- and thick-skinned tectonics in a classical foreland setting located at the front of the Jura fold-and-thrust belt in eastern France. The working area coincides with the intracontinental Rhine-Bresse Transfer Zone and represents the most external front of the deformed Alpine foreland. The investigation combines analyses of largely unpublished and newly available subsurface information with our own structural data, including an exhaustive paleostress analysis and geomorphologic observations. Results are provided in the form of a new tectonic map and a series of regional cross sections through the study area. The Besancon Zone, forming the most external part of the thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belt, encroached onto the Eo-Oligocene Rhine-Bresse Transfer Fault System until early Pliocene times. Thrust propagation was largely controlled by the Late Paleozoic to Paleogene preexisting fault pattern that characterizes the Rhine-Bresse Transfer Zone. Thick-skinned deformation, dominant throughout the Avant-Monts Zone located farther to the west, was associated with compressional to transpressional reactivation of such faults. Overprinting and crosscutting criteria of fault slip data allow distinguishing between systematically fanning maximum horizontal stress axes that define the front of the thin-skinned Jura fold-and-thrust belt and consistently NW--SE directed maximum horizontal stress axes that characterize deformation of the autochthonous cover of the foreland, which is affected by thick-skinned tectonics. Tectonic and geomorphic analyses indicate that thick-skinned tectonics started at a very late stage of foreland deformation (post-early Pliocene). Geomorphic observations imply that deformation between Mesozoic cover and basement is locally still decoupled. However, overprinting relationships and recent seismicity suggest that present-day tectonic activity is thick skinned, which probably reflects ongoing tectonic underplating in the Alpine foreland.

La klippe du Monte Maggiore présente des similitudes avec celle du Cima di Gratera située 30 km plus au sud : en premier lieu, la péridotite constituant les deux unités est une lherzolite ; puis, les deux unités ont enregistré la même succession d’événements métamorphiques; ensuite, dans l’empilement tectonique du Cap Corse, les deux unités occupent la position structurale la plus élevée. Des différences sont également observées : les gabbros sont rares au Monte Maggiore, où ils n’affleurent qu’à l’état de dykes, alors qu’ils constituent une écaille d’importance kilométrique au Cima di Gratera ; inversement, les niveaux de pyroxénite sont abondants au Monte Maggiore et rares au Cima di Gratera. Malgré ces différences, les deux klippes du Monte Maggiore et du Cima di Gratera sont considérées comme faisant partie d’une même unité ophiolitique ayant recouvert le Cap Corse, avant d’être partiellement érodée. Des veines de pseudotachylyte d’origine sismique sont décrites pour la première fois dans la klippe du Monte Maggiore. L’encaissant des veines est une péridotite serpentinisée traversée par une foliation cataclastique qui est soit sub-horizontale, soit fortement pentée. Les veines de génération de pseudotachylyte sont parallèles à la foliation cataclastique de l’encaissant. La faible extension latérale, la faible épaisseur des veines de génération ainsi que les fréquentes relations de recoupement entre veines suggèrent que les pseudotachylytes soient vraisemblablement le résultat d’un grand nombre d’événements sismiques de petite magnitude, tels que des essaims ou des nuages de répliques d’événements plus importants. Les veines de pseudotachylytes de la klippe du Monte Maggiore présentent les mêmes caractéristiques que celles de la klippe du Cima di Gratera. Elles sont interprétées comme les reliques d’une zone sismique de profondeur intermédiaire (Wadati-Benioff) active lors de la subduction de la lithosphère océanique de la Téthys ligure à l’Eocène, même si les assemblages minéralogiques qui permettraient d’estimer la profondeur de formation des pseudotachylytes sont inexistants au Monte Maggiore à la différence du Cima di Gratera. En dépit de cette incertitude sur la profondeur de formation, les veines nouvellement découvertes au Monte Maggiore sont considérées comme des reliques de l’activité sismique associée à la subduction de l’océan liguro-piémontais à l’Eocène. Cette interprétation suggère que la zone de Wadati-Benioff de l’océan liguro-piémontais puisse être suivie vers le sud en Corse Alpine ou vers le nord le long de la zone piémontaise des Alpes occidentales.

Therefore, dating fault activity is fundamental for plate movement reconstruction, resource exploration, or earthquake hazard assessment. Here, we report U-Pb ages of syntectonic calcite mineralizations from four thrusts and three tear faults sampled, at the regional scale, across the Jura fold-and-thrust belt in the northwestern Alpine foreland (eastern France). Four regional tectonic phases are recognized in the middle Eocene-middle Pleistocene interval: (1) pre-orogenic faulting at 44.7 ± 2.6 and 48.4 ± 1.5 Ma associated to the uplift of the Alpine forebulge, (2) syn-orogenic thrusting at 11.4 ± 1.1, 10.6 ± 0.5, 9.7 ± 1.4, 9.6 ± 0.3, and 7.5 ± 1.1 Ma associated to possible in-sequence thrust propagation, and (3) syn-orogenic tear faulting at 10.5 ± 0.4, 9.1 ± 6.5, 7.3 ± 1.9, 5.7 ± 4.7, 4.8 ± 1.7, and at 0.7 ± 4.2 Ma including the reactivation of a pre-orogenic fault as tear fault at 3.9 ± 2.9 Ma. Previously unknown faulting events at 44.7 ± 2.6 and 48.4 ± 1.5 Ma predate by ~ 10 Ma the accepted late Eocene age for tectonic activity onset in the Alpine foreland. In addition, we dated the previously inferred strike-slip faults re-activation as tear fault. The U-Pb ages demonstrate the long-lived tectonic history at the plate boundary between European and African plates and that the deformation observed in the foreland is directly linked to continental collision. Abstract

International audience; We used a field analysis of rock deformation microstructures and mesostructures to reconstructthe long-term orientation of stresses around two major active fault systems in Japan, the Median TectonicLine and the Rokko-Awaji Segment. Our study reveals that the dextral slip of the two fault systems, activesince the Plio-Quaternary, was preceded by fault normal extension in the Miocene and sinistral wrenching inthe Paleogene. The two fault systems deviated the regional stress field at the kilometer scale in their vicinityduring each of the three tectonic regimes. The largest deviation, found in the Plio-Quaternary, is a more faultnormal rotation of the maximum horizontal stress to an angle of 79° with the fault strands, suggesting anextremely low shear stress on the Median Tectonic Line and the Rokko-Awaji Segment. Possible causes of thislong-term stress perturbation include a nearly total release of shear stress during earthquakes, a low staticfriction coefficient, or lowelastic properties of the fault zones comparedwith the country rock. Independently ofthe preferred interpretation, the nearly fault normal orientation of the direction of maximum compressionsuggests that the mechanical properties of the fault zones are inadequate for the buildup of a pore fluidpressure sufficiently elevated to activate slip. The long-term weakness of the Median Tectonic Line and theRokko-Awaji Segment may reside in low-friction/low-elasticity materials or dynamic weakening rather than inpreearthquake fluid overpressures.

Abstract

International audience; The frictional properties of clay‐rich fault material collected from a megasplay fault within the Nankai accretionary complex were examined in frictional experiments performed at a normal stress of 5 MPa under water‐saturated conditions for slip velocities from 0.0026 to 260 mm/s with >250 mm of displacement. Our results reveal that the fault material can show two stages of velocity weakening behavior: weakening at slow velocities (v < 2.6 mm/s), characterized by a small degree of friction velocity dependence (the absolute value of (a − b) is typically 26 mm/s). Such a process of fault weakening may provide important constraints on models of faulting along a megasplay fault. At slip velocities from 0.026 to 2.6 mm/s, there exist both velocity‐weakening and velocity strengthening fault materials. The frictional coefficient values, m, for slow slip velocities (v = 0.26 mm/s) are relatively low (m = 0.28-0.35) for velocity‐strengthening samples compared with velocity‐weakening samples (m = 0.38-0.49). Microstructural analyses reveal that velocity‐strengthening samples show homogeneous deformation textures in which the entire gouge layer is deformed, whereas velocity‐weakening materials show evidence of shear localization in which deformation is concentrated along narrow subsidiary shears

Abstract

International audience; Seismic faulting along subduction-type plate boundaries plays a fundamental role in tsunami genesis. During the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTro SEIZE) Stage 1, the updip ends of plate boundary subduction faults were drilled and cored in the Nankai Trough (offshore Japan), where repeated large earthquakes and tsunamis have occurred, including the A.D. 1944 Tonankai (Mw = 8.1) earthquake. Samples were obtained from the frontal thrust, which connects the deep plate boundary to the seafl oor at the toe of the accretionary wedge, and from a megasplay fault that branches from the plate boundary décollement. The toe of the accretionary wedge has classically been considered aseismic, but vitrinite refl ectance geothermometry reveals that the two examined fault zones underwent localized temperatures of more than 380 C. This suggests that frictional heating occurred along these two fault zones, and implies that coseismic slip must have propagated at least one time to the updip end of the megasplay fault and to the toe of the accretionary wedge

International audience; P>Most fault-related pseudotachylytes in the Val Sesia area, Ivrea zone, NW Italian Alps, occur in two areas: near the Canavese Line in the Kinzigite Formation paragneisses and in an elongate belt in the Mafic Complex gabbros away from the Canavese Line. Ar-40/Ar-39 dating indicates that pseudotachylytes from the Kinzigite Formation were formed in the late Eocene, likely during the early stages of the collision between the NW corner of the Adriatic indenter and the European margin. Pseudotachylytes from the Mafic Complex were formed under a transpressive strain regime, as suggested by kinematic indicators, and yield Early Cretaceous (Albian) Ar-40/Ar-39 ages. Their formation is possibly related to shortening during the inception of the tectonic inversion of the Adriatic passive margin.

Abstract

International audience; To determine the processes responsible for slip-weakening in clayey gouge zones, rotary-shear experiments were conducted at seismic slip rates (equivalent to 0.9 and 1.3 m/s) at 0.6 MPa normal stress on a natural clayey gouge for saturated and non-saturated initial conditions. The mechanical behavior of the simulated faults shows a reproducible slip-weakening behavior, whatever initial moisture conditions. Examination of gouge obtained at the residual friction stage in saturated and non-saturated initial conditions allows the definition of two types of microstructures: a foliated type reflecting strain localization, and a non-foliated type composed of spherical aggregates. Friction experiments demonstrate that liquid-vapor transition of water within gouge due to frictional heating has a high capacity to explain the formation of spherical aggregates in the first meters of displacement. This result suggests that the occurrence of spherical aggregates in natural clayey fault gouges can constitute a new textural evidence for shallow depth pore water phase transition at seismic slip velocity and consequently for past seismic fault sliding.

Abstract

International audience; The crustal-scale Outer Hebrides Fault Zone (OHFZ) in NW Scotland is a complex fault zone which cuts Precambrian gneisses and which was active, with varied kinematics, at several epochs between the Proterozoic and the Mesozoic. It is outlined by a series of fault rocks formed under ductile to brittle conditions. The southern part of the Outer Hebrides Fault Zone, exposed in South Uist, Eriskay and Barra, is outlined by pseudotachylytes and cataclasites presumably formed by reverse motion during the brittle stages of the Caledonian orogeny about 430 Ma ago. Analysis of published geological maps and detailed field mapping between latitudes N56°54' and N57°17' show that the OHFZ consists of two segments. Between N57°07' and N57°17', the northern segment emplaces a banded granulite-textured metadiorite, forming the so-called Corodale gneiss, upon Lewisian gneiss. This fault segment is characterised by moderate deformation in the footwall. The hanging-wall consists of a pseudotachylyte sole whose thickness is comprised between 2 and 10 m and which is overlain by a cataclastic zone whose thickness ranges from a few meters to more than 50 m, locally reaching 250 m. Between N56°54' and N57°07', the hanging-wall and footwall of the southern segment both consist of Lewisian gneiss but with different metamorphic grades. Unlike the northern segment, the southern segment is characterized by numerous pseudotachylyte-bearing thrust surfaces along which the pseudotachylyte thickness seldom exceeds 0.5 m. In summary, seismic deformation along the northern segment appears localized and is associated with significant cataclasis, whereas along the southern segment, seismic deformation is essentially distributed, with limited formation of pseudotachylyte and very little cataclasis. The segmentation likely reflects the contrasted mineralogical compositions and the texture of the rocks from the hanging-wall. The Corodale gneiss mainly consists of an assemblage of minerals (opx-cpx-gt-pl) whose friction melting susceptibilities are higher than the mineralogical assemblage of the Lewisian gneiss (qz-pl-kf- bi and minor hbl-px). Similarly, unlike the Lewisian gneiss, the Corodale gneiss is devoid of any planar fabric. These differences may account for the preferred development of cataclasites in Corodale gneiss. The segmentation is further discussed by comparison with modern earthquake ruptures.

Abstract

International audience; Pseudotachylytes, cataclasites and mylonites have been reported from gabbros, peridotites and meta-sedimentary rocks from the western part of the Ivrea-Verbano zone in the vicinity of the so-called Canavese Line (Schmid et al., Tectonophysics, 1987; Techmer et al., Tectonophysics, 1992). This contribution aims at clarifying the distribution and the relative/absolute chronology of these fault rocks, in order to reconstruct a rheological (seismogenic-non seismogenic) evolution of the Ivrea crustal section. First results indicate that pseudotachylyte formation is polyphased. Two main stages can be distinguished: one pre-dating Ivrea mylonite formation, the other post-dating it. Each of the main stages can be further divided in several sub-stages. The younger pseudotachylytes were generated along two sets of generation planes: one set parallel to the trend of the Canavese Line, the other one perpendicular to it. Formation of pseudotachylytes is followed by cataclasis events stages which are best preserved in the Balmuccia peridotite body exposed along the Sesia river.

Abstract

International audience; On the basis of field observations in the Huqf area in eastern Oman, Montenat et al. (2003) defined an extensional phase of faulting of Aptian age in the Arabian platform (see also Montenat and Barrier, 2002). We recently revisited the fault exposures of the Wadi Sha'bat al Tawraq from which this conclusion has been drawn (location in Figure 1a). Our observations contradict those of Montenat et al. (2003), and consequently our conclusions are opposite from theirs. Here we review the conflicting observations and discuss the different interpretations.

Abstract

The Gulf of Aden is a young, obliquely opening, oceanic basin where tectonic structures can easily be followed and correlated from the passive margins to the active mid-oceanic ridge. It is an ideal laboratory for studies of continental lithosphere breakup from rifting to spreading. The northeastern margin of the Gulf of Aden offers the opportunity to study on land the deformation associated with oblique rifting over a wide area encompassing two segments of the passive margin, on either side of the Socotra fracture zone, exhibiting distinct morphologic, stratigraphic, and structural features. The western segment is characterized by an elevated rift shoulder and large grabens filled with thick synrift series, whereas the eastern segment exhibits low elevation and is devoid of major extensional structures and typical synrift deposits. Though the morphostructural features of the margin segments are different, the stress field analysis provides coherent results all along the margin. Four directions of extension have been recognized and are considered to be representative of two tensional stress fields with permutations of the horizontal principal stresses sigma(2) and sigma(3). The two dominant directions of extension, N150degreesE and N20degreesE, are perpendicular to the mean trend of the Gulf of Aden ( N75degreesE) and parallel to its opening direction (N20degreesE-N30degreesE), respectively. Unlike another study in the western part of the gulf, our data suggest that the N150degreesE extension stage is older than the N20degreesE extension stage. These conflicting chronologies, which are nowhere unambiguously established, suggest that the two extensions coexisted during the rifting. On-land data are compared with offshore data and are interpreted with reference to oblique rifting. The passive margin segmentation represents a local accommodation of the extensional deformation in a homogeneous regional stress field, which reveals the asymmetry of the rifting process. The first-order segmentation of the Sheba Ridge is inherited from the prior segmentation of the passive margin.
