21. Evaluating the Growth Response of Ricinus communisL. Cultivars to Salt Stress Using a Fast and Reliable Bioassay

Abstract

Here is proposed an easy, fast, and economic technique to investigate plant physiological traits in response to salt stress by using castor bean (Ricinus communisL.). Four Ricinus communisL. cultivars (TUNI 1, TUNI 4, C1012, and C1028) were grown in a growth chamber for 15 days on a sand substrate and were watered regularly with deionised water or NaCl solution (water electrical conductivity (EC) 4, or 8 dS m− 1) to keep soil moisture close to field capacity. According to roots, stem, and germination traits and derived indices, TUNI 1 and TUN4 showed the best growth performance on sand irrigated with 4 dS m− 1and 8 dS m− 1, respectively. Besides, comparing C1028 and C1012, the former showed a higher tolerance at the maximum electrical conductivity tested related to the latter, increasing salt tolerance index (STI) of roots (+ 25%) and stem (+ 20%). In conclusion, the present findings suggest that the TUNI 4 cultivar of Ricinus communisL. demonstrates superior overall performance, even under highly saline conditions, such as irrigation with 8 dS m− 1. Conversely, the TUNI 1 cultivar shows a good ability to perform in marginal soils with moderate salinity levels, such as those irrigated with 4 dS m− 1. Our results represent the first step towards optimization of a cost-effective method/bioassay for the selection of salt tolerant Ricinus communisL. cultivars and genotypes.

Abstract

Mulching is a common practice for improving crop yield and obtaining an out-of-season production, but when made using plastic materials it can bring environmental problems due to the management and the disposal of films at the end of the cropping seasons. To increase the sustainability of this practice, recently, mulching films made with biodegradable organic materials have become more widely used. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of a biodegradable mulching film on yield and qualitative traits of the San Marzano tomato fruits over two years (2014 and 2015). Two different types of mulching were tested: (i) black biodegradable film (MB12) and (ii) black low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were compared to bare soil (BS). Both mulching films elicited a 25% increase in yield, mainly due to the significantly higher number of fruits per square meter, compared to BS. Both mulching films also elicited a 9.9% increase in total soluble solids and a 57% increase in carotenoid content, while firmness showed the highest value in BS fruits. MB12 determined the highest value of the Hunter color ratio a/b of tomato fruits, followed by LDPE, while the lowest value was recorded in BS fruits. Both mulching films elicited an increase of 9.6%, 26.0%, and 11.7% for flavonoids, polyphenols, and AsA, respectively. In 2014, the MB12 degradation started at 71 days after transplant (DAT); in 2015, at 104 DAT. Therefore, replacing polyethylene with biodegradable film would seem to be an agronomically efficient and environmentally sustainable practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. Soil pollution in a decommissioned shooting range: a preliminary survey of the spatial variability of legacy pollutants

Abstract

Outdoor shooting ranges provide recreational facilities for millions of people in the world. However, there are many negative effects on the environment and public health arising from this activity.In particular, potential risks are mostly associated with the residential or agricultural use of decommissioned outdoor ranges, where bullets and targets have been deposited during the shooting activity.This is the case of an outdoor shooting range in Campania region (Southern Italy), located in an area of historical and naturalistic value, close to the ancient Etruscan village of Suessola (VII century b.C.). Specifically, the study site is located within an agricultural land declared unsuitable for agricultural and forest-pastoral production by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Resources, due to an extensive long term soil contamination associated with Pb, Sb, PAHs, dioxins, PCBs and C> 12 hydrocarbons.With the purpose of planning a detailed site characterization of the shooting range area, a preliminary environmental survey was carried out by means of field investigations (ultrasonic penetrometry, electromagnetic induction - EMI - and gamma spectroscopy) and geochemical prospecting.Cone index data, obtained by ultrasonic penetrometer measurements, indicated the presence of a very dense, hard and impenetrable to hand hauger layer, recognised as travertine rock, from 25 to more than 55 cm of depth, and dipping northward.Continuous EMI data and gamma spectroscopy (K %, eU ppm, eTh ppm) parameters were acquired in the field in order to identify homogeneous zones in which further geochemical investigations should have been focused. In fact, apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) map, consistently with the gamma ray dose rate distribution map, allowed to highlight three separated singularity areas N-S oriented.XRF analyses, carried out through a portable analyzer on soil samples collected along soil profiles digged from topsoil until the travertine layer, showed a high contamination by Pb (greater than 1000 mg/kg) and Sb (greater than 30 mg/kg) in the first 15 cm of depth, at a distance of approximately 90 m from the shooting lanes.Chemical analyses were also performed on 32 topsoil samples collected on the basis of a regular grid across the study area. Concentrations of 13 PAHs compounds were determined and the highest values were found close to the firing lanes where in soil a huge amount of shooting target fragments are present.The preliminary results showed how the contamination due to the previous activity in the area produced a spatial distribution of contaminats differentiated on the basis of their source material and their role in the shooting process.
