Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) has allowed for controlled development and growth in different species. However, its effect on some tropical species such as Swietenia mahagoni has not been evaluated. This study evaluated the growth and photosynthetic development of S. mahagoni produced in substrates inoculated with AMF. Using a completely randomized design, the combinations of two factors were evaluated: substrate (cocoa husk + coconut fiber + composted pine sawdust in proportions 6:2:2 and 2:6:2, and a control composed of soil + cocoa husks in a 9:1 ratio) and mycorrhizal strains (Glomus cubense, Rhizoglomus irregulare and Funneliformis mosseae). From 30 to 120 days after the seed's germination in the nursery, the leaf surface and the total dry mass were evaluated, and growth analysis was carried out using the relative growth rate and the net assimilation rate. At 120 days, the photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration and internal CO2 concentration were evaluated. Significant interactions between the different factors were found for all the variables evaluated. The Glomus cubense and Rhizophagus intraradices strains, in the substrate made up of 20 % cocoa husk + 60 % coconut fiber + 20 % sawdust, produced significant increases in the growth and photosynthetic development of S. mahagoni. The importance of the mycorrhizal association is evident, as it provides S. mahagoni seedlings with more efficient photosynthetic mechanisms, improving their establishment in plantations. - Abstract
[Introduction]: The mycorrhizal association is a nutritional strategy that some plants and mushrooms have developed that assures them a mutual benefit. [Objective]: To evaluate the effect of the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi strains (AMF) in the growth and quality of Swietenia mahagoni L. Jacq. seedlings produced with organic substrates. [Methodology]: An investigation was conducted at the Forestry Technology Study Center of Guantánamo University from January to April 2019. A complete random block design was utilized to study the combinations of two factors: two substrates (cocoa husk + coconut fiber + pine sawdust in proportions 6:2:2 and 2:6:2) and AMF strains (Glomus cubense, Rhizophagus intraradices, Funneliformis mosseae and without inoculation). Seedling total height, stem diameter, leaf area, aerial and root dry biomass, height/diameter ratio, Dickson Index, mycorrhizal colonization, and a quality index were utilized as response variables. [Results]: Significant interactions for all variables studied were determined (p ≤ 0,001) among the studied factors. There was a differentiated effect of the mycorrhizal in the growth of Antillean mahogany seedlings. The mycorrhizal strains Glomus cubense, Rhizophagus intraradices, and Funneliformis mosseae, in the second substrate (60 % coconut fiber), promoted a significant growth increase and a major seedling quality. [Conclusions]: The effect of the mycorrhizal association in the production and quality of Swietenia mahagoni seedlings is evident for the establishment of plantations., [Introducción]: La asociación micorrícica es una estrategia nutricional desarrollada por algunas plantas y hongos que les asegura un beneficio mutuo. The survival of Swietenia mahagoni obtained in nursery with the application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and different organic substrates was evaluated. Plants produced on two levels of substrates: cocoa husk, coconut fiber and composted pine sawdust in 6:2:2 and 2:6:2 ratios, and four levels of mycorrhizal strains: Glomus cubense, Rhizoglomus irregulare, Funneliformis mosseae and non-mycorrhizal, were used for a total of eight treatments. Plants in the field were distributed under a randomized block experimental design, with four replications per treatment; the planting frame used was 2 x 2 m. The plantation was done after 30 days and the survival was assessed monthly until 12 months. During this time, the morphological variables: height and diameter were registered, and the height to diameter ratio and the relative growth rate were calculated. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier estimator and proportional hazards regression was performed to determine the risk of mortality as a function of morphological variables. At 12 months after planting, an average survival rate of 86.30 % was obtained, with higher percentage for plants inoculated with Glomus cubense and Rhizoglomus irregularestrains in the substrate composed of 20 % cocoa husk + 60 % coconut fiber + 20 % sawdust. Diameter was the morphological variable most related to the risk of mortality in the planting sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different organic substrates on the quality of the container -grown S. mahagoni seedling. For this purpose, an experimental trial was carried out in the technified nursery "Camarones", belonging to the Agroforestry Enterprise Baracoa. The substrates used were cocoa husk (Cc), coconut fiber (Fc) and pine sawdust (As) and volumetric mixtures of cocoa husk, coconut fiber and pine sawdust in a completely random experiment with eight treatments and five replicas. The substrates were characterized and the morphological parameters of the seedlings, destubetado characteristics, structural stability of the root ball and radical architecture were determined. The species showed a more favourable morphological response in mixtures Cc60 (Cc - 60% + Fc - 20% + As - 20%) and Cc50 (Cc - 50% + Fc - 30% + As - 20%), attributable to physical and chemical characteristics., El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de diferentes sustratos orgánicos en la calidad de la plántula S. mahagoni, cultivada en contenedores.

The study was developed with the objective of evaluating the influence of substrate factors and strains of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the root system and nutritional status of Swietenia mahagoni L. Jacq. The factors tested were: factor 1 substrate: cocoa husk, coconut fiber and composted pine sawdust in proportions 6:2:2 and 2:6:2 and a control composed of 100 % soil; factor 2 mycorrhizal strains: Glomus cubense, Rhizoglomus irregulare and Funneliformis mosseae. The nine treatments resulting from the 3x3 factorial arrangements were established under a completely randomized experimental design. Variables related to the root system (length of the main root, number of primary and secondary roots, mycorrhizal colonization) and accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were measured by vector graphic analysis. The results obtained showed that there was a differentiated effect of mycorrhizae on the growth of S. mahagoni. Inoculation with mycorrhizal strains improved plant nutrition. The best substrate for the establishment of the mycorrhizal association was S2, composed of 20 % coconut husk + 60 % coconut fiber + 20 % pine sawdust, but the best treatments for the growth and nutrition of the seedlings were the combination of substrate S2 and the strains Glomus cubense and Rhizophagus irregulare. - Abstract
Mangroves in Cuba have a protecting role. Nevertheless, the level of mangrove degradation requires a special attention. In most of the Cuban coastal areas it may be found some damages created by local inhabitants. Through this research work some actions are proposed for recovering the mangrove that surrounds Caimanera bay, Guantánamo. Due to the real Cuban situation and the need of acting, some different parameters were evaluated such as: dasometric, natural regeneration, mortality, as well as. The main problems that affect the mangrove. It was demonstrated that the mangrove vegetation is structurally poor, although they present a good recovery level due to the high natural regeneration. Besides, some problems were identified that impact directly over mangroves for which some actions are proposed to reduce menaces and to reach the recovery., El papel protector que tiene los manglares en Cuba es de vital importancia.
