The ice shelves buttressing the Antarctic ice sheet determine the rate of ice-discharge into the surrounding oceans. The geometry of ice shelves, and hence their buttressing strength, is determined by ice flow as well as by the local surface accumulation and basal melt rates, governed by atmospheric and oceanic conditions. Contemporary methods resolve one of these rates, but typically not both. Moreover, there is little information of how they changed in time. We present a new method to simultaneously infer the surface accumulation and basal melt rates averaged over decadal and centennial timescales. We infer the spatial dependence of these rates along flow line transects using internal stratigraphy observed by radars, using a kinematic forward model of internal stratigraphy. We solve the inverse problem using simulation-based inference (SBI). SBI performs Bayesian inference by training neural networks on simulations of the forward model to approximate the posterior distribution, allowing us to also quantify uncertainties over the inferred parameters. We demonstrate the validity of our method on a synthetic example, and apply it to Ekstr\"om Ice Shelf, Antarctica, for which newly acquired radar measurements are available. We obtain posterior distributions of surface accumulation and basal melt averaging over 42, 84, 146, and 188 years before 2022. Our results suggest stable atmospheric and oceanographic conditions over this period in this catchment of Antarctica. We study with a 3D PIC simulation discontinuities between an electron-positron pair plasma and magnetized electrons and protons. A pair plasma is injected at one simulation boundary with a speed 0.6$c$ along its normal. It expands into an electron-proton plasma and a magnetic field that points orthogonally to the injection direction. Diamagnetic currents expel the magnetic field from within the pair plasma and pile it up in front of it. It pushes electrons, which induces an electric field pulse ahead of the magnetic one. This initial electromagnetic pulse (EMP) confines the pair plasma magnetically and accelerates protons electrically. The fast flow of the injected pair plasma across the protons behind the initial EMP triggers the filamentation instability. Some electrons and positrons cross the injection boundary and build up a second EMP. Electron-cyclotron drift instabilities perturb the plasma ahead of both EMPs seeding a Rayleigh-Taylor-type instability. Despite equally strong perturbations ahead of both EMPs, the second EMP is much more stable than the initial one. We attribute the rapid collapse of the initial EMP to the filamentation instability, which perturbed the plasma behind it. The Rayleigh-Taylor-type instability transforms the planar EMPs into transition layers, in which magnetic flux ropes and electrostatic forces due to uneven numbers of electrons and positrons slow down and compress the pair plasma and accelerate protons. In our simulation, the expansion speed of the pair cloud decreased by about an order of magnitude and its density increased by the same factor. Its small thickness implies that it is capable of separating a relativistic pair outflow from an electron-proton plasma, which is essential for collimating relativistic jets of pair plasma in collisionless astrophysical plasma., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, provisionally accepted for publication by the New Journal of Physics

We report atomistic simulation results which indicate that the location of shear banding in a metallic glass (MG) can be ascertained with reasonably high accuracy solely from the undeformed static structure. Correlation is observed between the location of the initiation of shear bands in a simulated MG and the initial distribution of the density of fertile sites (DFS) for stress-driven shear transformations identified a priori based on a deep learning model devised in our recent work [Fan and Ma, Nat. Commun. 12, 1506 (2021)]. In addition, we demonstrated that one can judge whether a glass is brittle or ductile solely based upon its initial DFS distribution. These validate that shear bands in MG arise from non-linear instabilities, and that the as-quenched glass structure contains inhomogeneities that influence these instabilities. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of collisionless jets of electrons and positrons in an ambient electron-proton plasma have revealed an acceleration of positrons at the expense of electron kinetic energy. The dominant instability within the jet was a filamentation instability between electrons, protons and positrons. In this work we show that a filamentation instability, between an initially unmagnetized ambient electron-proton plasma at rest and a beam of pair plasma that moves through it at a non-relativistic speed, indeed results in preferential positron acceleration. Filaments form that are filled predominantly with particles with the same direction of their electric current vector. Positron filaments are separated by electromagnetic fields from beam electron filaments. Some particles can cross the field boundary and enter the filament of the other species. Positron filaments can neutralize their net charge by collecting the electrons of the ambient plasma while protons cannot easily follow the beam electron filaments. Positron filaments can thus be compressed to a higher density and temperature than the beam electron filaments. Filament mergers, which take place after the exponential growth phase of the instability has ended, lead to an expansion of the beam electron filaments, which amplifies the magnetic field they generate and induces an electric field in this filament. Beam electrons lose a substantial fraction of their kinetic energy to the electric field. Some positrons in the beam electron filament are accelerated by the induced electric field to almost twice their initial speed. We study with a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation the stability of a discontinuity or piston, which separates an electron-positron cloud from a cooler electron-proton plasma. Such a piston might be present in the relativistic jets of accreting black holes separating the jet material from the surrounding ambient plasma and when pair clouds form during an X-ray flare and expand into the plasma of the accretion disk corona. We inject a pair plasma at a simulation boundary with a mildly relativistic temperature and mean speed. It flows across a spatially uniform electron-proton plasma, which is permeated by a background magnetic field. The magnetic field is aligned with one simulation direction and oriented orthogonally to the mean velocity vector of the pair cloud. The expanding pair cloud expels the magnetic field and piles it up at its front. It is amplified to a value large enough to trap ambient electrons. The current of the trapped electrons, which are carried with the expanding cloud front, drives an electric field that accelerates protons. A solitary wave grows and changes into a piston after it saturated. Our simulations show that this piston undergoes a collision-less instability similar to a Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The undular mode grows and we observe fingers in the proton density distribution. Amorphous solids lack long-range order. Therefore identifying structural defects -- akin to dislocations in crystalline solids -- that carry plastic flow in these systems remains a daunting challenge. By comparing many different structural indicators in computational models of glasses, under a variety of conditions we carefully assess which of these indicators are able to robustly identify the structural defects responsible for plastic flow in amorphous solids. We further demonstrate that the density of defects changes as a function of material preparation and strain in a manner that is highly correlated with the macroscopic material response. Our work represents an important step towards predicting how and when an amorphous solid will fail from its microscopic structure.

We consider mixed-integer optimal control problems with combinatorial constraints that couple over time such as minimum dwell times. We analyze a lifting and decomposition approach into a mixed-integer optimal control problem without combinatorial constraints and a mixed-integer problem for the combinatorial constraints in the control space. Both problems can be solved very efficiently with existing methods such as outer convexification with sum-up-rounding strategies and mixed-integer linear programming techniques. The coupling is handled using a penalty-approach. We provide an exactness result for the penalty which yields a solution approach that convergences to partial minima. We compare the quality of these dedicated points with those of other heuristics amongst an academic example and also for the optimization of electric transmission lines with switching of the network topology for flow reallocation in order to satisfy demands.

We present a framework of sequential action control (SAC) for stabilization of systems of partial differential equations which can be posed as abstract semilinear control problems in Hilbert spaces. We follow a late-lumping approach and show that the control action can be explicitly obtained from variational principles using adjoint information. Moreover, we analyze the closed-loop system obtained from the SAC feedback for the linear problem with quadratic stage costs. We apply this theory to a prototypical example of an unstable heat equation and provide numerical results as the verification and demonstration of the framework.

Selected results for the stability and optimal control of abstract switched systems in Banach and Hilbert space are reviewed. The dynamics are typically given in a piecewise sense by a family of nonlinearly perturbed evolutions of strongly continuous semigroups. Stability refers to characterizations of asymptotic decay of solutions that holds uniformly for certain classes of switching signals for time going to infinity. Optimal control refers to the minimization of costs associated to solutions by appropriately selecting switching signals. Selected numerical results verify and visualize some of the available theory.

Let $\boldsymbol{X}_1,\boldsymbol{X}_2,\dots$ be independent copies of a random vector $\boldsymbol{X}$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and with a continuous distribution function. The random vector $\boldsymbol{X}_n$ is a complete record, if each of its components is a record. As we require $\boldsymbol{X}$ to have independent components, crucial results for univariate records clearly carry over. But there are substantial differences as well: While there are infinitely many records in case $d=1$, there occur only finitely many in the series if $d\geq 2$. Consequently, there is a terminal complete record with probability one. We compute the distribution of the random total number of complete records and investigate the distribution of the terminal record. For complete records, the sequence of waiting times forms a Markov chain, but differently from the univariate case, now the state infinity is an absorbing element of the state space.

We study the optimal value function for control problems on Banach spaces that involve both continuous and discrete control decisions. For problems involving semilinear dynamics subject to mixed control inequality constraints, one can show that the optimal value depends locally Lipschitz continuously on perturbations of the initial data and the costs under rather natural assumptions. We prove a similar result for perturbations of the initial data, the constraints and the costs for problems involving linear dynamics, convex costs and convex constraints under a Slater-type constraint qualification. We consider the optimization of a dynamical system by switching at discrete time points between abstract evolution equations composed by nonlinearly perturbed strongly continuous semigroups, nonlinear state reset maps at mode transition times and Lagrange-type cost functions including switching costs. In particular, for a fixed sequence of modes, we derive necessary optimality conditions using an adjoint equation based representation for the gradient of the costs with respect to the switching times. For optimization with respect to the mode sequence, we discuss a mode-insertion gradient. The theory unifies and generalizes similar approaches for evolutions governed by ordinary and delay differential equations. More importantly, it also applies to systems governed by semilinear partial differential equations including switching the principle part. Examples from each of these system classes are discussed.

We extend the convergence analysis for methods solving PDE-constrained optimal control problems containing both discrete and continuous control decisions based on relaxation and rounding strategies to the class of first order semilinear hyperbolic systems in one space dimension. The results are obtained by novel a-priori estimates for the size of the relaxation gap based on the characteristic flow, fixed-point arguments and particular regularity theory for such mixed-integer control problems. As an application we consider a relaxation model for optimal flux switching control in conservation laws motivated by traffic flow problems.

We study the blow-ups of configuration spaces. These spaces have a structure of what we call an Orlik-Solomon manifold; it allows us to compute the intersection cohomology of certain flat connections with logarithmic singularities using some Aomoto type complexes of logarithmic forms. We consider integer-restricted optimal control of systems governed by abstract semilinear evolution equations. This includes the problem of optimal control design for certain distributed parameter systems endowed with multiple actuators, where the task is to minimize costs associated with the dynamics of the system by choosing, for each instant in time, one of the actuators together with ordinary controls. We consider relaxation techniques that are already used successfully for mixed-integer optimal control of ordinary differential equations. Our analysis yields sufficient conditions such that the optimal value and the optimal state of the relaxed problem can be approximated with arbitrary precision by a control satisfying the integer restrictions. The results are obtained by semigroup theory methods. The approach is constructive and gives rise to a numerical method. We supplement the analysis with numerical experiments.

If F is a master function corresponding to a hyperplane arrangement A and a collection of weights y, we investigate the relationship between the critical set of F, the variety defined by the vanishing of the one-form w = d log F, and the resonance of y. Relaxation volume tensors quantify the effect of stress on diffusion of crystal defects. Continuum linear elasticity predicts that calculations of these parameters using periodic boundary conditions do not suffer from systematic deviations due to elastic image effects and should be independent of supercell size or symmetry. In practice, however, calculations of formation volume tensors of the <110> interstitial in Stillinger-Weber silicon demonstrate that changes in bonding at the defect affect the elastic moduli and result in system-size dependent relaxation volumes. These vary with the inverse of the system size. Knowing the rate of convergence permits accurate estimates of these quantities from modestly sized calculations. Furthermore, within the continuum linear elasticity assumptions the average stress can be used to estimate the relaxation volume tensor from constant volume calculations., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. We discuss the roles of continuum linear elasticity and atomistic calculations in determining the formation volume and the strain energy of formation of a point defect in a crystal. Our considerations bear special relevance to defect formation under stress. The elasticity treatment is based on the Green's function solution for a center of contraction or expansion in an anisotropic solid. It makes possible the precise definition of a formation volume tensor and leads to an extension of Eshelby's result for the work done by an external stress during the transformation of a continuum inclusion (Proc. Roy. Soc. Lond. Ser. A, 241 (1226) 376, 1957). Parameters necessary for a complete continuum calculation of elastic fields around a point defect are obtained by comparing with an atomistic solution in the far field. However, an elasticity result makes it possible to test the validity of the formation volume that is obtained via atomistic calculations under various boundary conditions. It also yields the correction term for formation volume calculated under these boundary conditions. Using two types of boundary conditions commonly employed in atomistic calculations, a comparison is also made of the strain energies of formation predicted by continuum elasticity and atomistic calculations.
