The relative abundance of the heavy water isotopologue HDO provides a deeper insight in the atmospheric hydrological cycle. The SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CartograpHY (SCIAMACHY) allows global retrievals of the ratio HDO/H2O in the 2.3 micron wavelength range. However, the spectroscopy of water lines in this region remains a large source of uncertainty for these retrievals. We therefore evaluate and improve the water spectroscopy in the range 4174–4300 cm−1 and test if this reduces systematic uncertainties in the SCIAMACHY retrievals of HDO/H2O. We use a laboratory spectrum of water vapour to fit line intensity, air broadening and wavelength shift parameters. The improved spectroscopy is tested on a series of ground-based high resolution FTS spectra as well as on SCIAMACHY retrievals of H2O and the ratio HDO/H2O. We find that the improved spectroscopy leads to lower residuals in the FTS spectra compared to HITRAN 2008 and Jenouvrier et al. (2007) spectroscopy and the retrievals become more robust against changes in retrieval window. For both the FTS and SCIAMACHY measurements the retrieved total columns H2O decrease by 2–4 % and we find a negative shift of the HDO/H2O ratio, which for SCIAMACHY is partly compensated by changes in the retrieval setup and calibration software. The updated SCIAMACHY HDO/H2O product shows somewhat steeper latitudinal and temporal gradients and a steeper Rayleigh distillation curve, strengthening previous conclusions that current isotope-enabled general circulation models underestimate the variability in the near-surface HDO/H2O ratio., info:eu-repo/semantics/published

International audience; Reunion Island (21°S, 55°E) is part of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC), a network dedicated to performing high-quality long-term ground-based observations of atmospheric trace gases at globally distributed sites. Up to now, only a few NDACC stations are located in the Southern Hemisphere, and particularly very few at tropical and subtropical latitudes. Furthermore, Reunion Island is situated in the Indian Ocean, at 2000 km from southeast Africa and at only 700 km from Madagascar. It is therefore a good location to study the transport of biomass burning products from these regions to Reunion Island. Ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) solar absorption observations are sensitive to a large number of biomass burning products. At present, we have a record of such FTIR observations at Reunion Island from three measurement campaigns, namely in October 2002, from August to October 2004, and from May to October 2007, and from continuous observations that started in May 2009. The measurements in 2007 and 2009-2010 allow the observation of seasonal variability. In this work, we present retrieved time-series of several biomass burning products such as C2H2, C2H6 and HCN. These ground-based data are compared to the CTM IMAGES. The Lagrangian particle dispersion model FLEXPART is used to explain the day-to-day variability of these species by the transport pathways.

Poster; International audience; Ile de La Réunion is a complementary site in the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC), situated in the southern tropics, at 21°S, 55°E. In support of a better understanding of atmospheric chemistry and physics above tropical regions, we have implemented new ground-based MAX-DOAS (multi-axis DOAS) and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) observations at this site, on a campaign basis since 2002. At present, we have data from 2002 (month of October), 2004 (August to October) and 2007 (end of May until the end of October). Additional campaigns are planned until the availability of a new infrastructure for permanent observations at the Maido (~ 2000 masl), around 2010. Here, we report on the available time series for a number of tropospheric species (CO, H2CO and CH4,) and stratospheric halogen species, comparisons between MAX-DOAS and FTIR data of H2CO, and comparisons of ground-based and satellite data.

The radiative properties of water vapor play an important role in the physical and chemical processes occurring in the atmosphere. Accurate knowledge of the line parameters for this species is therefore needed. This work presents new measurements of water vapor line parameters in the 26000-13000 cm-1 spectral region. The measurements were obtained by combining a high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer with a long-path absorption cell, thus allowing the observation of very weak, previously unobserved, lines. A total of more than 9000 lines have been identified and their position, integrated cross section and self-broadening parameter have been determined. The dependence of the line parameters on nitrogen buffer gas pressure (0-800 hPa) has also been studied. The complete line list presented here is primarily compared to the HITRAN spectroscopic database, most frequently used in atmospheric calculations. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. La pollution atmosphérique en milieu urbain est un problème préoccupant car une fraction croissante de la population mondiale vit dans les villes. Les effets de la pollution se manifestent également sur la végétation urbaine et sur notre patrimoine architectural, de sorte que c'est la qualité de la vie de l'ensemble des habitants des métropoles de la planète qui est en jeu. Il est indispensable de connaître la composition des atmosphères urbaines et de comprendre les mécanismes qui régissent cette composition pour évaluer les conséquences de la pollution, définir les exigences de réduction des émissions et établir des scénarios des tendances futures.L'objectif du présent travail est de déterminer la composition chimique, les propriétés et le comportement des particules et des dépôts humides en Région bruxelloise. On a distingué les aérosols atmosphériques, les brouillards, les rosées (ou givres) récoltés à la fois sur les végétaux et sur un collecteur inerte, les pluies et les dépôts totaux (formés des pluies et des dépôts secs accumulés dans l'entonnoir de collecte en l'absence de pluie). Ce vaste objectif a été réalisé grâce à la collecte de nombreux échantillons sur une échelle de temps suffisante en différents endroits de la capitale, et à l'analyse de ces échantillons par des techniques variées et complémentaires (techniques classiques d'analyse d'échantillons liquides telles que spectrométrie d'absorption et d'émission atomique, chromatographie liquide, colorimétrie, ainsi que microscopie électronique et fluorescence des rayons-X). Trois collecteurs (pour le brouillard, la pluie et la rosée) ont été entièrement conçus et réalisés au laboratoire dans le cadre de ce travail. Les éléments suivants sont analysés: NO3, SO4, NH4, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, CI, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb.Afin de comprendre les causes de la variabilité spatio-temporelle des concentrations, l'influence de paramètres tels que la saison, la direction du vent, et le lieu de prélèvement a été examinée. De plus, dans le cas des pluies et des brouillards, l'étude de l'évolution des concentrations au cours d'un même épisode a permis d'investiguer les processus physico-chimiques qui contrôlent le dépôt humide. Elle a permis d'acquérir une meilleure connaissance des mécanismes d'incorporation des aérosols dans la phase aqueuse et du phénomène de lessivage de l'atmosphère. Tout au long de ce travail, les interactions entre la phase particulaire (aérosols) et les phases liquides (brouillards, rosées, pluies) ont été examinées. Une relation entre les concentrations en éléments dissous et le volume d'eau de l'échantillon a été établie dans le cas des pluies, des rosées et des brouillards. Cette relation traduit un effet de dilution et démontre l'importance du mécanisme de condensation-évaporation des gouttes d'eau. L'importance du phénomène de nucléation des sulfates, nitrates et chlorures d'ammonium constitutifs de la fraction fine de l'aérosol soluble a été démontrée. Ces sels d'ammonium sont formés secondairement par des réactions de conversion gaz-particules. L'abondance des ions ammonium, et l'importance de leur action de neutralisation de l'acidité, constituent une particularité de l'atmosphère bruxelloise.L'identification des sources de particules et d'éléments en relation avec leurs propriétés chimiques et granulométriques a été réalisée en utilisant divers outils statistiques (corrélations entre éléments, analyse factorielle) et géochimiques (rapports de concentration, facteurs d'enrichissement, granulométrie). From absorption spectra obtained at high resolution by coupling a Fourier transform spectrometer to a long-path multiple reflection cell the intensities of the O2 Herzberg bands (A3Σu+-X3Σg-, c1Σu-, A′ 3Δu-X3Σg-) have been studied at ambient temperature. The integrated cross section values are given for the lines of the (v′-0) bands in the A3ΣuPLU-X3Σg-, c1Σu--X3Σg-, and A′ 3Δu-X3Σg- transitions with v′ = 0-11, v′ = 2-19, and v′ = 2-12, respectively. The band oscillator strengths have been deduced and transition moments have been calculated. The total absorption values in the region of the Herzberg bands together with the photoabsorption values determined previously above the dissociation limit can be modeled by a single curve, in agreement with the continuity relationship of the cross sections through the dissociation limit., info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The absorption spectra of the O2 Herzberg band systems (A3Σ+u-X3Σ -g, c1Σ-u-X3Σ -g, and A′ 3Δu-X3Σ-g) lying in the wavelength region 240-300 nm were reinvestigated. The coupling of a long absorption cell and a high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer has allowed the observation of numerous weak lines which were not reported previously. From the rotational analysis of the line positions, determined with an accuracy of 0.005 cm-1, the molecular constants of the A3Σ+u, v = 0-12, c1Σ-u, v = 2-19, and A′ 3Δu, v = 2-12 levels are improved significantly. The interaction between the A and c states is described quantitatively. A new interpretation of the perturbations observed in the energy region close to the dissociation limit is given which involves a weakly bound 3Πu state as the most probable perturbing state., info:eu-repo/semantics/published
