Abstract Background Integrated patterns of energy balance-related behaviours of preschool children in Asia are sparse, with few comparative analyses. Purpose Using cohorts in Singapore (GUSTO) and France (EDEN), we characterized lifestyle patterns of children and investigated their associations with family-focused contextual factors. Methods Ten behavioural variables related to child’s diet, walking, outdoor play and screen time were ascertained by parental questionnaires at age 5–6 years. Using principal component analysis, sex-specific lifestyle patterns were derived independently for 630 GUSTO and 989 EDEN children. Contextual variables were organised into distal (family socio-economics, demographics), intermediate (parental health, lifestyle habits) and proximal (parent-child interaction factors) levels of influence and analysed with hierarchical linear regression. Results Three broadly similar lifestyle patterns were identified in both cohorts: “discretionary consumption and high screen time”, “fruit, vegetables, and low screen time” and “high outdoor playtime and walking”. The latter two patterns showed small differences between cohorts and sexes. The “discretionary consumption and high screen time” pattern was consistently similar in both cohorts; distal associated factors were lower maternal education (EDEN boys), no younger siblings (GUSTO boys) and Malay/Indian ethnicity (GUSTO), while intermediate and proximal associated factors in both cohorts and sexes were poor maternal diets during pregnancy, parents allowing high child control over food intake, snacking between meals and having television on while eating. Conclusions Three similar lifestyle patterns were observed among preschool children in Singapore and France. There were more common associated proximal factors than distal ones. Cohort specific family-focused contextual factors likely reflect differences in social and cultural settings. Findings will aid development of strategies to improve child health.

Abstract: While emerging research supports a positive relationship between social capital and youth physical activity (PA), few studies have examined possible mechanisms explaining this relationship and no studies have focused on rural youth. In this study, we examined parents’ support of children’s PA as an intermediary factor linking social capital and youth PA in a largely rural cross sectional sample of American children aged 6- to 19-years and their parents/guardians (N =767 families) living in upstate New York. Parents completed a self-administered survey assessing demographic factors, perceived social capital, support for children’s PA, and children’s PA including time spent outdoors and days per week of sufficient PA. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesis that higher social capital is linked with higher parental support for PA and, in turn, higher PA in children. Analyses were conducted separately for younger (6–12 years) and older (13–19 years) children and controlled for demographic factors (child age, household education, participation in a food assistance program) and perceived neighborhood safety. Anticipated relationships among social capital, parents’ activity-related support, and children’s PA were identified for older, but not younger children. Findings suggest that parent support for children’s PA is one possible mechanism linking social capital and youth PA and the parents of adolescents may rely more heavily on cues from their social environment to shape their approaches to supporting their children’s PA than parents of younger children. A Chinese version of the Feetham Family Functioning Survey (Chinese FFFS) was developed and psychometrically tested using a sample of 317 child-rearing mothers in Hong Kong. The Chinese FFFS is a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 25 items from which an instrument discrepant score (d score) can be extracted. The results from the confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis confirm that the Chinese FFFS has a five-factor structure based on the family ecological model, thereby affirming its construct validity. Cronbach's alpha for d scores was .91, indicating a high internal consistency. In the test-retest study of 39 mothers, the correlation coefficient for "total d score" over a 2-week period was .82, which showed high test-retest reliability. The highest discrepant scores in family functioning were at the level of the marital relationship, which requires family nurses to be skilled at assessing and intervening at this family subsystem. This study examined discrepancies in couples' family functioning scores on the Japanese version of the Feetham Family Functioning Survey, which evaluates both internal and external family functioning, and the relationship of family demographic characteristics to such discrepancies. Participants were 313 husband and wife pairs with child(ren) attending nursery school. The discrepancies were significantly related to: the presence of a family member living with a disease/illness; the number of children; mean age of the children; and annual household income. A possible factor that may explain the discrepancies was question design, that is, use of "you" or "your," and the inclusion of questions concerning intrafamily issues. The findings indicated that family-related perceptions by each individual family member may differ.
