Despite the progress made in Mamba-based medical image segmentation models, existing methods utilizing unidirectional or multi-directional feature scanning mechanisms struggle to effectively capture dependencies between neighboring positions, limiting the discriminant representation learning of local features. These local features are crucial for medical image segmentation as they provide critical structural information about lesions and organs. To address this limitation, we propose SliceMamba, a simple and effective locally sensitive Mamba-based medical image segmentation model. SliceMamba includes an efficient Bidirectional Slice Scan module (BSS), which performs bidirectional feature slicing and employs varied scanning mechanisms for sliced features with distinct shapes. This design ensures that spatially adjacent features remain close in the scanning sequence, thereby improving segmentation performance. Additionally, to fit the varying sizes and shapes of lesions and organs, we further introduce an Adaptive Slice Search method to automatically determine the optimal feature slice method based on the characteristics of the target data. Extensive experiments on two skin lesion datasets (ISIC2017 and ISIC2018), two polyp segmentation (Kvasir and ClinicDB) datasets, and one multi-organ segmentation dataset (Synapse) validate the effectiveness of our method., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. Scoliosis presents significant diagnostic challenges, particularly in adolescents, where early detection is crucial for effective treatment. Traditional diagnostic and follow-up methods, which rely on physical examinations and radiography, face limitations due to the need for clinical expertise and the risk of radiation exposure, thus restricting their use for widespread early screening. In response, we introduce a novel video-based, non-invasive method for scoliosis classification using gait analysis, effectively circumventing these limitations. This study presents Scoliosis1K, the first large-scale dataset specifically designed for video-based scoliosis classification, encompassing over one thousand adolescents. Leveraging this dataset, we developed ScoNet, an initial model that faced challenges in handling the complexities of real-world data. This led to the development of ScoNet-MT, an enhanced model incorporating multi-task learning, which demonstrates promising diagnostic accuracy for practical applications. Our findings demonstrate that gait can serve as a non-invasive biomarker for scoliosis, revolutionizing screening practices through deep learning and setting a precedent for non-invasive diagnostic methodologies. Gait recognition, a rapidly advancing vision technology for person identification from a distance, has made significant strides in indoor settings. However, evidence suggests that existing methods often yield unsatisfactory results when applied to newly released real-world gait datasets. Furthermore, conclusions drawn from indoor gait datasets may not easily generalize to outdoor ones. Therefore, the primary goal of this work is to present a comprehensive benchmark study aimed at improving practicality rather than solely focusing on enhancing performance. To this end, we first develop OpenGait, a flexible and efficient gait recognition platform. Using OpenGait as a foundation, we conduct in-depth ablation experiments to revisit recent developments in gait recognition. Surprisingly, we detect some imperfect parts of certain prior methods thereby resulting in several critical yet undiscovered insights. Inspired by these findings, we develop three structurally simple yet empirically powerful and practically robust baseline models, i.e., DeepGaitV2, SkeletonGait, and SkeletonGait++, respectively representing the appearance-based, model-based, and multi-modal methodology for gait pattern description. Beyond achieving SoTA performances, more importantly, our careful exploration sheds new light on the modeling experience of deep gait models, the representational capacity of typical gait modalities, and so on. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the NTIRE 2024 challenge, focusing on efficient single-image super-resolution (ESR) solutions and their outcomes. The task of this challenge is to super-resolve an input image with a magnification factor of x4 based on pairs of low and corresponding high-resolution images. The primary objective is to develop networks that optimize various aspects such as runtime, parameters, and FLOPs, while still maintaining a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of approximately 26.90 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_valid dataset and 26.99 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_test dataset. In addition, this challenge has 4 tracks including the main track (overall performance), sub-track 1 (runtime), sub-track 2 (FLOPs), and sub-track 3 (parameters). In the main track, all three metrics (ie runtime, FLOPs, and parameter count) were considered. The ranking of the main track is calculated based on a weighted sum-up of the scores of all other sub-tracks. In sub-track 1, the practical runtime performance of the submissions was evaluated, and the corresponding score was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 2, the number of FLOPs was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding FLOPs was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 3, the number of parameters was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding parameters was used to determine the ranking. RLFN is set as the baseline for efficiency measurement. The challenge had 262 registered participants, and 34 teams made valid submissions. They gauge the state-of-the-art in efficient single-image super-resolution. Gait recognition stands as one of the most pivotal remote identification technologies and progressively expands across research and industry communities. However, existing gait recognition methods heavily rely on task-specific upstream driven by supervised learning to provide explicit gait representations like silhouette sequences, which inevitably introduce expensive annotation costs and potential error accumulation. Escaping from this trend, this work explores effective gait representations based on the all-purpose knowledge produced by task-agnostic Large Vision Models (LVMs) and proposes a simple yet efficient gait framework, termed BigGait. Specifically, the Gait Representation Extractor (GRE) within BigGait draws upon design principles from established gait representations, effectively transforming all-purpose knowledge into implicit gait representations without requiring third-party supervision signals. Experiments on CCPG, CAISA-B* and SUSTech1K indicate that BigGait significantly outperforms the previous methods in both within-domain and cross-domain tasks in most cases, and provides a more practical paradigm for learning the next-generation gait representation. Finally, we delve into prospective challenges and promising directions in LVMs-based gait recognition, aiming to inspire future work in this emerging topic. The $P$-wave charmonium electromagnetic Dalitz decays $h_{c}\rightarrow\eta^{(\prime)}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ $(\ell=e, \mu)$ with large recoil momentum are investigated in the framework of perturbative QCD, and the contributions from the small recoil momentum region are described by the overlap of soft wave functions. The transition form factors $f_{h_{c}\eta^{(\prime)}}(q^{2})$ and the normalized transition form factors $F_{h_{c} \eta^{(\prime)}}(q^{2})$ in full kinematic region are derived for the first time. It is noticed that there are no IR divergences at one-loop level, and the transition form factors with the relativistic corrections from the internal momentum of $h_{c}$ are insensitive to both the shapes of $\eta^{(\prime)}$ distribution amplitudes and the invariant mass of the lepton pair in the large recoil momentum region. Intriguingly, unlike the situation in the $S$-wave charmonium decays $J/\psi\rightarrow\eta^{(\prime)}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$, we find the contributions from the small recoil momentum region are comparable with those from the large recoil momentum region in the $P$-wave charmonium decays $h_{c}\rightarrow\eta^{(\prime)}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$. By employing the obtained $F_{h_{c} \eta^{(\prime)}}(q^{2})$, we give the predictions of the branching ratios $\mathcal{B}(h_{c}\rightarrow\eta^{(\prime)}\ell^{+}\ell^{-})$, which may come within the range of measurement of present or near-future experiments., Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures and 1 table

Gait recognition is a biometric technology that has received extensive attention. Most existing gait recognition algorithms are unimodal, and a few multimodal gait recognition algorithms perform multimodal fusion only once. None of these algorithms may fully exploit the complementary advantages of the multiple modalities. In this paper, by considering the temporal and spatial characteristics of gait data, we propose a multi-stage feature fusion strategy (MSFFS), which performs multimodal fusions at different stages in the feature extraction process. Also, we propose an adaptive feature fusion module (AFFM) that considers the semantic association between silhouettes and skeletons. The fusion process fuses different silhouette areas with their more related skeleton joints. Since visual appearance changes and time passage co-occur in a gait period, we propose a multiscale spatial-temporal feature extractor (MSSTFE) to learn the spatial-temporal linkage features thoroughly. Specifically, MSSTFE extracts and aggregates spatial-temporal linkages information at different spatial scales. Combining the strategy and modules mentioned above, we propose a multi-stage adaptive feature fusion (MSAFF) neural network, which shows state-of-the-art performance in many experiments on three datasets. Gait datasets are essential for gait research. However, this paper observes that present benchmarks, whether conventional constrained or emerging real-world datasets, fall short regarding covariate diversity. To bridge this gap, we undertake an arduous 20-month effort to collect a cross-covariate gait recognition (CCGR) dataset. The CCGR dataset has 970 subjects and about 1.6 million sequences; almost every subject has 33 views and 53 different covariates. Compared to existing datasets, CCGR has both population and individual-level diversity. In addition, the views and covariates are well labeled, enabling the analysis of the effects of different factors. CCGR provides multiple types of gait data, including RGB, parsing, silhouette, and pose, offering researchers a comprehensive resource for exploration. In order to delve deeper into addressing cross-covariate gait recognition, we propose parsing-based gait recognition (ParsingGait) by utilizing the newly proposed parsing data. We have conducted extensive experiments. Our main results show: 1) Cross-covariate emerges as a pivotal challenge for practical applications of gait recognition. 2) ParsingGait demonstrates remarkable potential for further advancement. 3) Alarmingly, existing SOTA methods achieve less than 43% accuracy on the CCGR, highlighting the urgency of exploring cross-covariate gait recognition. There has been significant progress in improving the performance of graph neural networks (GNNs) through enhancements in graph data, model architecture design, and training strategies. For fairness in graphs, recent studies achieve fair representations and predictions through either graph data pre-processing (e.g., node feature masking, and topology rewiring) or fair training strategies (e.g., regularization, adversarial debiasing, and fair contrastive learning). How to achieve fairness in graphs from the model architecture perspective is less explored. More importantly, GNNs exhibit worse fairness performance compared to multilayer perception since their model architecture (i.e., neighbor aggregation) amplifies biases. To this end, we aim to achieve fairness via a new GNN architecture. We propose \textsf{F}air \textsf{M}essage \textsf{P}assing (FMP) designed within a unified optimization framework for GNNs. Notably, FMP \textit{explicitly} renders sensitive attribute usage in \textit{forward propagation} for node classification task using cross-entropy loss without data pre-processing. In FMP, the aggregation is first adopted to utilize neighbors' information and then the bias mitigation step explicitly pushes demographic group node presentation centers together. In this way, FMP scheme can aggregate useful information from neighbors and mitigate bias to achieve better fairness and prediction tradeoff performance. Experiments on node classification tasks demonstrate that the proposed FMP outperforms several baselines in terms of fairness and accuracy on three real-world datasets. Monocular depth estimation using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has shown impressive performance in outdoor driving scenes. However, self-supervised learning of indoor depth from monocular sequences is quite challenging for researchers because of the following two main reasons. One is the large areas of low-texture regions and the other is the complex ego-motion on indoor training datasets. In this work, our proposed method, named IndoorDepth, consists of two innovations. In particular, we first propose a novel photometric loss with improved structural similarity (SSIM) function to tackle the challenge from low-texture regions. Moreover, in order to further mitigate the issue of inaccurate ego-motion prediction, multiple photometric losses at different stages are used to train a deeper pose network with two residual pose blocks. Subsequent ablation study can validate the effectiveness of each new idea. Experiments on the NYUv2 benchmark demonstrate that our IndoorDepth outperforms the previous state-of-the-art methods by a large margin. The choice of the representations is essential for deep gait recognition methods. The binary silhouettes and skeletal coordinates are two dominant representations in recent literature, achieving remarkable advances in many scenarios. However, inherent challenges remain, in which silhouettes are not always guaranteed in unconstrained scenes, and structural cues have not been fully utilized from skeletons. In this paper, we introduce a novel skeletal gait representation named skeleton map, together with SkeletonGait, a skeleton-based method to exploit structural information from human skeleton maps. Specifically, the skeleton map represents the coordinates of human joints as a heatmap with Gaussian approximation, exhibiting a silhouette-like image devoid of exact body structure. Beyond achieving state-of-the-art performances over five popular gait datasets, more importantly, SkeletonGait uncovers novel insights about how important structural features are in describing gait and when they play a role. Furthermore, we propose a multi-branch architecture, named SkeletonGait++, to make use of complementary features from both skeletons and silhouettes. Experiments indicate that SkeletonGait++ outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods by a significant margin in various scenarios. The process of opinion expression and exchange is a critical component of democratic societies. As people interact with large language models (LLMs) in the opinion shaping process different from traditional media, the impacts of LLMs are increasingly recognized and being concerned. However, the knowledge about how LLMs affect the process of opinion expression and exchange of social opinion networks is very limited. Here, we create an opinion network dynamics model to encode the opinions of LLMs, cognitive acceptability and usage strategies of individuals, and simulate the impact of LLMs on opinion dynamics in a variety of scenarios. The outcomes of the simulations inform about effective demand-oriented opinion network interventions. The results from this study suggested that the output opinion of LLMs has a unique and positive effect on the collective opinion difference. The marginal effect of cognitive acceptability on collective opinion formation is nonlinear and shows a decreasing trend. When people partially rely on LLMs, the exchange process of opinion becomes more intense and the diversity of opinion becomes more favorable. In fact, there is 38.6% more opinion diversity when people all partially rely on LLMs, compared to prohibiting the use of LLMs entirely. The optimal diversity of opinion was found when the fractions of people who do not use, partially rely on, and fully rely on LLMs reached roughly 4:12:1. Our experiments also find that introducing extra agents with opposite/neutral/random opinions, we can effectively mitigate the impact of biased/toxic output from LLMs. Our findings provide valuable insights into opinion dynamics in the age of LLMs, highlighting the need for customized interventions tailored to specific scenarios to address the drawbacks of improper output and use of LLMs., Comment: 21 pages, 4figures,2tables

Generating realistic human flows across regions is essential for our understanding of urban structures and population activity patterns, enabling important applications in the fields of urban planning and management. However, a notable shortcoming of most existing mobility generation methodologies is neglect of prediction fairness, which can result in underestimation of mobility flows across regions with vulnerable population groups, potentially resulting in inequitable resource distribution and infrastructure development. To overcome this limitation, our study presents a novel, fairness-aware deep learning model, FairMobi-Net, for inter-region human flow prediction. The FairMobi-Net model uniquely incorporates fairness loss into the loss function and employs a hybrid approach, merging binary classification and numerical regression techniques for human flow prediction. We validate the FairMobi-Net model using comprehensive human mobility datasets from four U.S. cities, predicting human flow at the census-tract level. Our findings reveal that the FairMobi-Net model outperforms state-of-the-art models (such as the DeepGravity model) in producing more accurate and equitable human flow predictions across a variety of region pairs, regardless of regional income differences. The model maintains a high degree of accuracy consistently across diverse regions, addressing the previous fairness concern. Further analysis of feature importance elucidates the impact of physical distances and road network structures on human flows across regions. With fairness as its touchstone, the model and results provide researchers and practitioners across the fields of urban sciences, transportation engineering, and computing with an effective tool for accurate generation of human mobility flows across regions.

Pre-trained large language models (PLMs) have the potential to support urban science research through content creation, information extraction, assisted programming, text classification, and other technical advances. In this research, we explored the opportunities, challenges, and prospects of PLMs in urban science research. Specifically, we discussed potential applications of PLMs to urban institution, urban space, urban information, and citizen behaviors research through seven examples using ChatGPT. We also examined the challenges of PLMs in urban science research from both technical and social perspectives. The prospects of the application of PLMs in urban science research were then proposed. We found that PLMs can effectively aid in understanding complex concepts in urban science, facilitate urban spatial form identification, assist in disaster monitoring, and sense public sentiment. At the same time, however, the applications of PLMs in urban science research face evident threats, such as technical limitations, security, privacy, and social bias. The development of fundamental models based on domain knowledge and human-AI collaboration may help improve PLMs to support urban science research in future.

As a kind of biometrics, the gait information of pedestrians has attracted widespread attention from both industry and academia since it can be acquired from long distances without the cooperation of targets. In recent literature, this line of research has brought exciting chances along with alarming challenges: On the positive side, gait recognition used for security applications such as suspect retrieval and safety checks is becoming more and more promising. On the negative side, the misuse of gait information may lead to privacy concerns, as lawbreakers can track subjects of interest using gait characteristics even under face-masked and clothes-changed scenarios. To handle this double-edged sword, we propose a gait attribute editing framework termed GaitEditor. It can perform various degrees of attribute edits on real gait sequences while maintaining the visual authenticity, respectively used for gait data augmentation and de-identification, thereby adaptively enhancing or degrading gait recognition performance according to users' intentions. Experimentally, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation under both gait recognition and anonymization protocols on three widely used gait benchmarks. Numerous results illustrate that the adaptable utilization of GaitEditor efficiently improves gait recognition performance and generates vivid visualizations with de-identification to protect human privacy. To the best of our knowledge, GaitEditor is the first framework capable of editing multiple gait attributes while simultaneously benefiting gait recognition and gait anonymization. Gait recognition is a rapidly advancing vision technique for person identification from a distance. Prior studies predominantly employed relatively shallow networks to extract subtle gait features, achieving impressive successes in constrained settings. Nevertheless, experiments revealed that existing methods mostly produce unsatisfactory results when applied to newly released real-world gait datasets. This paper presents a unified perspective to explore how to construct deep models for state-of-the-art outdoor gait recognition, including the classical CNN-based and emerging Transformer-based architectures. Specifically, we challenge the stereotype of shallow gait models and demonstrate the superiority of explicit temporal modeling and deep transformer structure for discriminative gait representation learning. Consequently, the proposed CNN-based DeepGaitV2 series and Transformer-based SwinGait series exhibit significant performance improvements on Gait3D and GREW. As for the constrained gait datasets, the DeepGaitV2 series also reaches a new state-of-the-art in most cases, convincingly showing its practicality and generality. Video-based gait recognition has achieved impressive results in constrained scenarios. However, visual cameras neglect human 3D structure information, which limits the feasibility of gait recognition in the 3D wild world. Instead of extracting gait features from images, this work explores precise 3D gait features from point clouds and proposes a simple yet efficient 3D gait recognition framework, termed LidarGait. Our proposed approach projects sparse point clouds into depth maps to learn the representations with 3D geometry information, which outperforms existing point-wise and camera-based methods by a significant margin. Due to the lack of point cloud datasets, we built the first large-scale LiDAR-based gait recognition dataset, SUSTech1K, collected by a LiDAR sensor and an RGB camera. The dataset contains 25,239 sequences from 1,050 subjects and covers many variations, including visibility, views, occlusions, clothing, carrying, and scenes. Extensive experiments show that (1) 3D structure information serves as a significant feature for gait recognition. (2) LidarGait outperforms existing point-based and silhouette-based methods by a significant margin, while it also offers stable cross-view results. (3) The LiDAR sensor is superior to the RGB camera for gait recognition in the outdoor environment. Gait recognition is one of the most critical long-distance identification technologies and increasingly gains popularity in both research and industry communities. Despite the significant progress made in indoor datasets, much evidence shows that gait recognition techniques perform poorly in the wild. More importantly, we also find that some conclusions drawn from indoor datasets cannot be generalized to real applications. Therefore, the primary goal of this paper is to present a comprehensive benchmark study for better practicality rather than only a particular model for better performance. To this end, we first develop a flexible and efficient gait recognition codebase named OpenGait. Based on OpenGait, we deeply revisit the recent development of gait recognition by re-conducting the ablative experiments. Encouragingly,we detect some unperfect parts of certain prior woks, as well as new insights. Inspired by these discoveries, we develop a structurally simple, empirically powerful, and practically robust baseline model, GaitBase. Experimentally, we comprehensively compare GaitBase with many current gait recognition methods on multiple public datasets, and the results reflect that GaitBase achieves significantly strong performance in most cases regardless of indoor or outdoor situations. Understanding the determinants underlying variations in urban health status is important for informing urban design and planning, as well as public health policies. Multiple heterogeneous urban features could modulate the prevalence of diseases across different neighborhoods in cities and across different cities. This study examines heterogeneous features related to socio-demographics, population activity, mobility, and the built environment and their non-linear interactions to examine intra- and inter-city disparity in prevalence of four disease types: obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Features related to population activity, mobility, and facility density are obtained from large-scale anonymized mobility data. These features are used in training and testing graph attention network (GAT) models to capture non-linear feature interactions as well as spatial interdependence among neighborhoods. We tested the models in five U.S. cities across the four disease types. The results show that the GAT model can predict the health status of people in neighborhoods based on the top five determinant features. The findings unveil that population activity and built-environment features along with socio-demographic features differentiate the health status of neighborhoods to such a great extent that a GAT model could predict the health status using these features with high accuracy. The results also show that the model trained on one city can predict health status in another city with high accuracy, allowing us to quantify the inter-city similarity and discrepancy in health status. The model and findings provide novel approaches and insights for urban designers, planners, and public health officials to better understand and improve health disparities in cities by considering the significant determinant features and their interactions.

The spread of COVID-19 revealed that transmission risk patterns are not homogenous across different cities and communities, and various heterogeneous features can influence the spread trajectories. Hence, for predictive pandemic monitoring, it is essential to explore latent heterogeneous features in cities and communities that distinguish their specific pandemic spread trajectories. To this end, this study creates a network embedding model capturing cross-county visitation networks, as well as heterogeneous features to uncover clusters of counties in the United States based on their pandemic spread transmission trajectories. We collected and computed location intelligence features from 2,787 counties from March 3 to June 29, 2020 (initial wave). Second, we constructed a human visitation network, which incorporated county features as node attributes, and visits between counties as network edges. Our attributed network embeddings approach integrates both typological characteristics of the cross-county visitation network, as well as heterogeneous features. We conducted clustering analysis on the attributed network embeddings to reveal four archetypes of spread risk trajectories corresponding to four clusters of counties. Subsequently, we identified four features as important features underlying the distinctive transmission risk patterns among the archetypes. The attributed network embedding approach and the findings identify and explain the non-homogenous pandemic risk trajectories across counties for predictive pandemic monitoring. The study also contributes to data-driven and deep learning-based approaches for pandemic analytics to complement the standard epidemiological models for policy analysis in pandemics.
