At present, wastewater discharged from many industries contains a large amount of Cu (II). In this study, an O-modified activated carbon fiber (O-ACF) with high adsorption activity was prepared by oxidation modification of activated carbon fiber with 20% nitric acid. O-ACF was used to adsorb Cu (II) in water. Electrode adsorption experiments showed that O-ACF had excellent electro-adsorption performance for Cu (II), and the maximum adsorption capacity was 48.60 mg/g, which was 1.63 times that of commercial activated carbon. After optimizing and adjusting the voltage (0.6–1.2 V), pH (2–10) and electrode plate spacing (5–20 mm), it was found that the most favorable working conditions for electro-adsorption of Cu (II) by O-ACF electrode were voltage of 1.0 V, solution pH of about 6, and electrode plate spacing of 10 mm. The kinetic model fitting showed that the adsorption effect of O-ACF on Cu (II) was mainly chemical adsorption. The intraparticle diffusion model further found that the adsorption of Cu (II) by O-ACF was influenced by membrane diffusion and internal diffusion. Adsorption regeneration experiment showed that O-ACF still maintained 95% adsorption performance for Cu (II) after 5 times of adsorption regeneration, which had good practicability. This study provides an excellent material for capacitive deionization system, which is expected to be applied in sewage treatment, seawater desalination and nutrient recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The remediation performances of heavy metals contaminaged sediment by hydrophytes including Alternanthera Philoxeroides, Canna indica L., Nymphaea tetragona, Typha orientalis, Phragmites australis, Phragmites australis, Hydrilla verticillata, Cyperus alternifolius L., Eichhornia crassipes, Acorus tatarinowii, Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop were investigated through batch pot experiments. The results showed that the enrichment effect of Pb was better in Alternanthera Philoxeroides and Acorus tatarinowii with the BCFs of 4.42 and 1.22, and the TFs of 7.84 and 4.23, respectively. The Cr enrichment effects by Nymphaea tetragona, Hydrilla verticillata and Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms were better, which BCFs were 2.69, 1.91 and 3.71, and which TFs were 7.93, 2.07 and 2.18, respectively.

Water and sediment samples of Jie River, China were collected and analyzed. The results showed that the average arsenic volume of water sample was 0.42 mg L-1 present in the Jie River. Among the riverway, the arsenic volume and pH kept rising with the flow. Standard leaching experiments showed the leachability of the sediments was lower than the hazardous materials permitted threshold volume but the leaching liquid exceeded the environmental quality standard for surface water which means the sediments might be a source to leach arsenic into aqueous system. In order to figure out the actual situation, simulated leaching experiments were performed. The results revealed that the sediments leaching could aggravate the water quality which was mostly influenced by the agitation and temperature. Solidification procedure was tested and suggested that with clean sand paved on the sediment, the amount of leaching arsenic will decrease 77.89%. Thus, it is of great help to apply cleaned sediments to remediate the contaminated sediments to reduce the leaching of arsenic into the aqueous system.

This study aimed to establish a rat liver transplantation model with a steatotic donor liver after cardiac death, reflecting clinical conditions. Rats were fed a high-fat diet for 8 weeks to establish the fatty liver model. This model simulates liver steatosis caused by various factors before clinical donation after cardiac death. A pneumothorax was created in the donor rat to induce hypoxia and cardiac arrest before incising the liver. This simulated the processes of hypoxia and cardiac arrest caused by withdrawal of treatment in actual clinical situations. The harvested cardiac death donor liver was then transplanted using the Kamada technique. Donor operative time was 45.7 ± 4.2 min; cardiac arrest time, 9 ± 0.8 min; recipient surgery time, 40.3 ± 4.9 min; and no-liver time, 15 ± 2.5 min. Of 40 liver-transplanted rats, 2 died within 24 h, with a surgical success rate of 95%. The transaminase levels on post-transplantation days 1, 3, 5, and 7 were 835.4 ± 71.33 U/L, 1334.5 ± 102.13 U/L, 536.4 ± 65.52 U/L, and 218.2 ± 36.77 U/L, respectively. This rat liver transplantation model with a steatotic donor liver after cardiac death could improve the simulation of the pathophysiological processes of clinical donation after cardiac death, and could be used as a reliable and stable animal model.
