1. First Use of a Polarized $^3$He Neutron Spin Filter on the Back-n White Neutron Source of CSNS

Abstract

Polarized eV neutrons can address interesting scientific questions in nuclear physics, particle physics, and astrophysics/cosmology. We present the first experiment to polarize the neutrons on the Back-n beamline at the Chinese Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) using an in-situ NSF using spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) of 3He. A 3He polarization of 68%$\pm$0.7% for this in-situ NSF was measured through neutron transmission method at Back-n.This is high enough to enable new experiments on the Back-n beamline. Abstract

A high precision beam monitor system based on silicon carbide PIN sensor is designed for China Spallation Neutron Source 1.6 GeV proton beam to monitor the proton beam fluence.The concept design of the beam monitor system is finished together with front-end electronics with silicon carbide PIN sensors, readout system and mechanical system.Several tests are performed to study the performance of each component of the system.The charge collection of the SiC PIN sensors after proton radiation is studied with 80 MeV proton beam for continuous running. Research on the performance of the front-end electronics and readout system is finished for better data acquisition.The uncertainty of proton beam fluence is below 1% in the beam monitor system.

Abstract

To investigate the 1.6 GeV high-energy proton beam detector utilized in the CSNS Phase-II upgrade project, a plastic scintillator detector presents a viable option due to its superior radiation hardness. This study investigates the effects of irradiation damage on a BC408 plastic scintillator induced by 80 MeV protons, including absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, and light yield tests of BC408 pre- and post-proton irradiation, with a focus on determining the radiation resistance threshold of BC408. The results indicate that the performance of BC408 remains unimpaired at absorbed doses up to 5.14*10^3 Gy/cm3, demonstrating its ability to absorb 1.63*10^13 p/cm3 1.6 GeV protons while maintaining stability. This suggests that BC408 could potentially be used as the 1.6 GeV high-energy proton beam detector in the CSNS Phase-II upgrade project.

Abstract

A comprehensive and reliable nuclear database of neutron-induced process is required by the development of Accelerator-Driven System technology. Although many excellent efforts have been made, the measurements to the fission fragment in zero degree of the beam direction is not perfect enough. Most detector can not work constantly under the strike of intense flux neutron beam, thus their application as Zero Degree Detector (ZDD) is greatly limited. Recently, the Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) technology has been developed to meet the complicated and several requirement of ATLAS on Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and could survive after $2.5\times 10^{15}~n_{eq}/cm^2$ irradiation. With its 50 $\mu$m active thickness, 30 ps temporal resolution, low cost and good radiation hardness property, the LGAD detector is expected to be an excellent candidate for the use of a Zero Degree Detector in neutron-induced process data measurements. This paper represents a performance test to LGAD detector when it is used as a ZDD on the Back-streaming Neutron (Back-n) beamline at CSNS. Measuring to the cross section of $^6Li(n,T)\alpha$, it shows that the LGAD performs well as a ZDD based on a good agreement with the data from ENDF database., Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures, prepared for IEEE-TNS

Abstract

Angle-differential cross sections for neutron-induced $\alpha$ production in carbon were determined at thirty discrete neutron energy levels ranging from 6.2 to 76 MeV at the Back-n white neutron source of the China Spallation Neutron Source. Utilizing the ${\Delta}E-E$ telescopes within the Light-charged Particle Detector Array spanning angular measurements from 24.5{\deg}to 155.5{\deg} in the laboratory frame, the $^{12}C(n,\alpha)x$ reaction cross sections were obtained. These experimental findings exhibit a strong concordance with prior results and have been benchmarked against theoretical estimates from codes such as TALYS, Geant4, and assessments from the ENDF/B-VIII.0 database. Abstract

To meet high radiation challenge for detectors in future high-energy physics, a novel 3D 4H-SiC detector was investigated. SiC detectors could potentially operate in radiation harsh and room temperature environment because of its high thermal conductivity and high atomic displacement threshold energy. 3D structure, which decouples thickness and distance between electrodes, further improves timing performance and radiation hardness of the detector. We developed a simulation software - RASER (RAdiation SEmiconductoR) to simulate the time resolution of planar and 3D 4H-SiC detectors with different parameters and structures, and the reliability of the software is verified by comparing time resolution results of simulation with data. The rough time resolution of 3D 4H-SiC detector was estimated, and the simulation parameters could be used as guideline to 3D 4H-SiC detector design and optimization., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The Forbush Decrease (FD) represents the rapid decrease of the intensities of charged particles accompanied with the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) or high-speed streams from coronal holes. It has been mainly explored with ground-based neutron monitors network which indirectly measure the integrated intensities of all species of cosmic rays by counting secondary neutrons produced from interaction between atmosphere atoms and cosmic rays. The space-based experiments can resolve the species of particles but the energy ranges are limited by the relative small acceptances except for the most abundant particles like protons and helium. Therefore, the FD of cosmic ray electrons and positrons have just been investigated by the PAMELA experiment in the low energy range ($<5$ GeV) with limited statistics. In this paper, we study the FD event occurred in September, 2017, with the electron and positron data recorded by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer. The evolution of the FDs from 2 GeV to 20 GeV with a time resolution of 6 hours are given. We observe two solar energetic particle events in the time profile of the intensity of cosmic rays, the earlier and weak one has not been shown in the neutron monitor data. Furthermore, both the amplitude and recovery time of fluxes of electrons and positrons show clear energy-dependence, which is important in probing the disturbances of the interplanetary environment by the coronal mass ejections., Comment: This article is dedicated to the 72nd anniversary of People's Republic of China

Abstract

Differential and angle-integrated cross sections for the $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$)$^{7}$Li, $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$$_{0}$)$^{7}$Li and $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$$_{1}$)$^{7}$Li$^{*}$ reactions have been measured at CSNS Back-n white neutron source. Two enriched (90%) $^{10}$B samples 5.0 cm in diameter and ~85.0 ${\mu}$g/cm$^{2}$ in thickness each with an aluminum backing were prepared, and back-to-back mounted at the sample holder. The charged particles were detected using the silicon-detector array of the Light-charged Particle Detector Array (LPDA) system. The neutron energy E$_{n}$ was determined by TOF (time-of-flight) method, and the valid ${\alpha}$ events were extracted from the E$_{n}$-Amplitude two-dimensional spectrum. With 15 silicon detectors, the differential cross sections of ${\alpha}$-particles were measured from 19.2{\deg} to 160.8{\deg}. Fitted with the Legendre polynomial series, the ($n, {\alpha}$) cross sections were obtained through integration. The absolute cross sections were normalized using the standard cross sections of the $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$)$^{7}$Li reaction in the 0.3 - 0.5 MeV neutron energy region. The measurement neutron energy range for the $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$)$^{7}$Li reaction is 1.0 eV $\le$ En < 2.5 MeV (67 energy points), and for the $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$$_{0}$)$^{7}$Li and $^{10}$B($n, {\alpha}$$_{1}$)$^{7}$Li$^{*}$ reactions is 1.0 eV $\le$ En < 1.0 MeV (59 energy points). The present results have been analyzed by the resonance reaction mechanism and the level structure of the $^{11}$B compound system, and compared with existing measurements and evaluations., Comment: 19 pages, 34 figures, to be published in Chinese Physics C

Abstract

The Back-n white neutron beam line, which uses back-streaming white neutrons from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source, is used for nuclear data measurements. A Micromegas-based neutron detector with two variants was specially developed to measure the beam spot distribution for this beam line. In this article, the design, fabrication, and characterization of the detector are described. The results of the detector performance tests are presented, which include the relative electron transparency, the gain and the gain uniformity, and the neutron beam profile reconstruction capability. Abstract

The white neutron beamline at the China Spallation Neutron Source will be used mainly for nuclear data measurements. It will be characterized by high flux and broad energy spectra. To exploit the beamline as a neutron imaging source, we propose a liquid scintillator fiber array for fast neutron resonance radiography. The fiber detector unit has a small exposed area, which will limit the event counts and separate the events in time, thus satisfying the requirements for single-event time-of-flight (SEToF) measurement. The current study addresses the physical design criteria for ToF measurement, including flux estimation and detector response. 41. Test of the Performance of an LGAD-Based Zero-Degree Detector on the CSNS Back-n Beamline

Abstract

A comprehensive and reliable nuclear database of neutron-induced processes is required by the development of accelerator-driven system (ADS) technology. Although many efforts have been made, the measurements of light charged ions (LCIs) (such as proton, tritium, and $\alpha $ ) in zero degree of the beam direction were not conducted with a high accuracy. Most detectors cannot work constantly under the strike of intense flux neutron beam, and thus their application as zero-degree detector (ZDD) is greatly limited. Recently, the low-gain avalanche diode (LGAD) technology has been developed to meet the harsh requirement of the ATLAS on the high-luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and could survive after $2.5 \; \times \; 10^{15} \; 1$ MeV $\text {n}_{\text {eq}}/\text {cm}^{2}$ irradiation. With its 50- $\mu $ m active thickness, 30-ps timing resolution, low cost, and good radiation hardness property, the LGAD detector is expected to be a candidate for the use of a ZDD in neutron-induced processes’ data measurements. This article represents a performance test of the LGAD detector when it is used as a ZDD on the back-streaming neutron (Back-n) beamline at CSNS. Based on the measurements of the cross section of $^{6}\text {Li}(n,{T}) \alpha $ , it shows that the LGAD performs well as a ZDD based on a good agreement with the data from evaluated nuclear data file (ENDF).

Abstract

The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is an upcoming scientific satellite mission for high energy gamma-ray, electron and cosmic rays detection. The silicon tracker (STK) is a sub detector of the DAMPE payload with an excellent position resolution (readout pitch of 242um), which measures the incident direction of particles, as well as charge. The STK consists 12 layers of Silicon Micro-strip Detector (SMD), equivalent to a total silicon area of 6.5m$^2$. The total readout channels of the STK are 73728, which leads to a huge amount of raw data to be dealt. In this paper, we focus on the on-board data compression algorithm and procedure in the STK, which was initially verified by cosmic-ray measurements.
