32. Adsorption of Heavy Metals by Adsorbents from Food Waste Residue.

Abstract

Food waste residue is an intractable problem worldwide. The current study discussed the potential of adsorbents prepared from food waste residue (AFWR) for heavy metal removal from wastewater. The microstructure of AFWR was characterized, and kinetic studies on the simultaneous adsorption of Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions by AFWR were carried out. It was found that the adsorption of all heavy metals followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics, so that there was a competitive adsorption for Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+. According to the experimental results, the adsorption in competition beads with the heavy metals presented an order of Cu2+ > Pb2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The first complete nucleotide sequence of a Grapevine virus B (GVB-QMWH: GVB-Qimiaowuhe) isolate from China is reported. The genome organization of GVB- QMWH is similar to that of previously described GVB isolates. However, the 7,610 nt genomic RNA is the largest of the GVB genomes reported to date, including a 10 nt insertion in the 3' UTR. Moreover, the sizes of open reading frame (ORF) 1 and 2 did not correspond to those found in the other previously published GVB isolates (EF583906, GU733707, JX513897 and X75448). ORF1 of GVB-QMWH was 6 nt longer than that of EF583906, GU733707 and JX513897, and 12 nt longer than that of X75448. ORF2 was 21 nt smaller than that of EF583906, GU733707 and JX513897, and 27 nt smaller than that of X75448. The isolate was found to be less than 80% similar to other reported GVB variants, and phylogenetic analysis based on the complete nucleotide sequence suggested that GVB-QMWH is distantly related to other isolates. Abstract

High saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy are helpful for getting a high frequency electromagnetic microwave absorption performance. The α-Fe possesses a high saturation magnetization. Fe-B phases exhibit a relatively higher magnetic anisotropy and higher resistivity than α-Fe simultaneously. In this work, we made nanocrystalline powders of Fe82B17Cu1, mainly consisting of α-Fe and Fe2B phases, by ball milling and post-annealing. Electromagnetic microwave characterization shows that Fe82B17Cu1 powders possess a relative high permeability and considerable permittivity. Due to a good electromagnetic impedance matching, a good electromagnetic microwave absorption property (RL < -35 dB) has been achieved at 3.6 GHz. Abstract

We report the preparation, mechanisms and thermal properties of core-shell structured polymer/inorganic nanoparticle composite microspheres prepared by Pickering emulsion polymerization. Stable Pickering emulsion was firstly fabricated by using surface-modified nano-SiO2 particles as stabilizer. And then, two kinds of polystyrene/nano-SiO2 (PS/SiO2) composite microspheres with different sizes and morphologies were synthesized using hydrophobic azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and hydrophilic ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator, respectively. The possible mechanisms of Pickering emulsion polymerization initiated by different initiators were proposed according to the results of transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The chemical structure and molecular weight of the composite microspheres were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and gel permeation chromatography coupled with a multi-angle laser light scattering photometer (GPC-MALLS). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) were used to comparatively analyze the thermal properties of nanocomposites and corresponding pure polymer. The results indicated that the decomposition temperature and glass transition temperature (Tg) of nanocomposites were elevated to a certain degree due to the existence of nano-SiO2. 46. Interferon-gamma-induced transcriptional activation is mediated by protein kinase C.

Abstract

Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) regulates a variety of biological functions and is the principal lymphokine known to activate macrophages. In studies of the molecular mechanisms by which these cells are regulated by IFN-gamma, the transcriptional activation of an IFN-gamma-inducible gene, gamma.1, in human macrophage-like cell lines was examined. Transcription of this gene is rapidly induced by 0.1-1 unit of IFN-gamma. In addition, gamma.1 transcription is efficiently induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, which is known to activate protein kinase C (PKC). Both stimulators of gamma.1 transcription induce the translocation of PKC from the cytosol of a membrane fraction. Two selective inhibitors of PKC, H7 and sphingosine, suppressed not only the induction of gamma.1 mRNA but transcription of HLA-DR by IFN-gamma as well. These findings establish that PKC plays a significant role in the signal transduction pathway leading to transcriptional activation of some IFN-gamma-regulated genes of cells of the mononuclear phagocyte lineage.

47. Segmental Orientation in Ionically Cross-Linked Blends of Polystyrene and Poly(ethyl acrylate)

Abstract

Ionically complexed blends are potentially useful model compounds for studying selected aspects of segmental orientation behavior in blends. This paper presents a study of orientation behavior in stoichiometric blends of poly[styrene-co-(styrenesulfonic acid)] and poly[ethyl acrylate-co-(4-vinyl pyridine)] (heteroblends), where ionic cross-links are produced by proton transfer from the acid to the pyridine moieties, thus leading to an effective ionic network whose density is controlled by the counit content of the blend components. Orientation measurements were obtained by infrared dichroism. For blends composed of components with similar counit contents (symmetric blends), the segmental orientation of both the polystyrene and poly(ethyl acrylate) segments increases with ion content when compared at the same relative temperature, a direct result of the effective ionic cross-links. The polystyrene orientation is, however, significantly lower than that in previously-studied ionomer blends based solely on polystyrene (homoblends). This suggests that the orientation of the polystyrene segments in the heteroblends is reduced by a plasticization effect from the poly(ethyl acrylate) segments, attributed to relaxation coupling between the dissimilar chains during stretching. In an asymmetric blend of a sulfonated polystyrene copolymer of low acid content and a poly(ethyl acrylate) copolymer of high pyridine content, the orientation of the styrene segments is much higher than that in the symmetric blend of the same acid content. It is concluded that relaxation coupling is not present in the asymmetric blend, attributed to the high orientation of the ethyl acrylate segments and to the lower ethyl acrylate content.

50. Molecular cloning of a gene selectively induced by gamma interferon from human macrophage cell line U937

Abstract

A cDNA clone encoding a gamma interferon (IFN-gamma)-inducible mRNA in human cells of the macrophage lineage was isolated and characterized. The corresponding gene, gamma.1, was selectively induced by IFN-gamma, responding a hundredfold better to IFN-gamma than to IFN-alpha. The induction was rapid and transient, with maximal mRNA accumulation at about 3 h and decline to the basal level after 48 h. Transcriptional activation could be detected as early as 5 min after IFN-gamma stimulation and accounted entirely for the mRNA accumulation. The induction of gamma.1 by IFN-gamma was cell-type restricted, being seen only in macrophages and endothelial cells. In addition, phorbol ester-induced differentiation of promyelocytic HL-60 cells and promonocytic THP-1 cells rendered the gamma.1 gene inducible by IFN-gamma. The 1.0-kilobase gamma.1 cDNA sequence encoded a small predicted polypeptide of 38 amino acids and had a conserved sequence associated with rapidly turning over mRNAs. In vitro translation of the gamma.1 transcript yielded a 4,000-dalton polypeptide.
