In this work, we study the invasion dynamics of a stage-structured population located in a one-dimensional periodic lattice. With a biologically relevant hypothesis that the population diffuses in its immature stage, we derive a novel spatially heterogeneous population model with coupled local and nonlocal effects. Assuming a KPP-type structure, we obtain the existence and variational characterization of spreading speed by appealing to monotone dynamical system theories. Further, we study the dependence of the spreading speed on the dispersal rate of immature population; it turns out that there exists an optimal dispersal strategy to maximize the speed. Numerical simulations further suggest that such an optimal strategy is unique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
