We present a study of the molecular gas in early-mid stage major-mergers, with a sample of 43 major-merger galaxy pairs selected from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey and a control sample of 195 isolated galaxies selected from the xCOLD GASS survey. Adopting kinematic asymmetry as a new effective indicator to describe the merger stage, we aim to study the role of molecular gas in the merger-induced star formation enhancement along the merger sequence of galaxy pairs. We obtain the molecular gas properties from CO observations with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), Institut de Radioastronomie Milimetrique (IRAM) 30-m telescope, and the MASCOT survey. Using these data, we investigate the differences in molecular gas fraction ($f_{\rm H_{2}}$), star formation rate (SFR), star formation efficiency (SFE), molecular-to-atomic gas ratio ($M_{\rm H_{2}}/M_{\rm HI}$), total gas fraction ($f_{\rm gas}$), and the star formation efficiency of total gas (${\rm SFE_{gas}}$) between the pair and control samples. In the full pair sample, our results suggest the $f_{\rm H_{2}}$ of paired galaxies is significantly enhanced, while the SFE is comparable to that of isolated galaxies. We detect significantly increased $f_{\rm H_{2}}$ and $M_{\rm H_{2}}/M_{\rm HI}$ in paired galaxies at the pericenter stage, indicating an accelerated transition from atomic gas to molecular gas due to interactions. Our results indicate that the elevation of $f_{\rm H_{2}}$ plays a major role in the enhancement of global SFR in paired galaxies at the pericenter stage, while the contribution of enhanced SFE in specific regions requires further explorations through spatially resolved observations of a larger sample spanning a wide range of merger stages., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

Polarimetric features during the prompt phase of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) have been essential for elucidating the debated emission mechanisms and gaining insight into the inner structure of GRBs. However, the potential impact of photon-Axion-Like-Particle (ALP) mixing in extragalactic magnetic fields, leading to significant modifications to the initial polarization state, has been overlooked in discussions concerning prompt phase constraints. In this work, we first examine the statistical characteristics of linear polarization degree ($\Pi_{L}$) in GRBs, by utilizing data from polarimetric missions focusing on sub-MeV emissions. Our analysis, conducted with a restricted sample of GRBs spanning various redshifts, reveals a diverse distribution of $\Pi_{L}$, which currently shows no correlation with the GRBs' spectral parameters or properties of candidate host galaxies. We then explore alternations to the initial $\Pi_{L}$ due to photon-ALP mixing within a domain-like structure of the intergalactic magnetic field (${\bf B}_{\rm IGM} $). With the existence of ALPs with $m_{a}$$~$$\lesssim$$~$$10^{-14}$$~$eV and $g_{a\gamma}~$$\simeq$$~0.5\times10^{-11}$, the mixing leads to a decrease in the polarization degree of initially fully linearly polarized photons, while it induces a certain degree of polarization to initially unpolarized photons. To ensure that the effect of mixing is small enough to be negligible, the mixing term $\Delta_{a\gamma} \equiv 1/2\ g_{a\gamma} {\bf B}_{\rm IGM}$ should be less than $1.5\times 10^{-4}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Currently, the number of GRBs with both sub-MeV polarization measurement and redshift confirmation remains very limited. Certification of redshift for GRBs with low $\Pi_{L}$ would further constrain the parameter space of ALPs or provide an independent means to determine the upper limit on ${\bf B}_{\rm IGM}$., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

The extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) represents ionized gases traced by optical/UV lines beyond the stellar extent of galaxies. We herein introduce a novel multi-slit narrow-band spectroscopy method to conduct spatially resolved spectroscopy of the eDIG around a sample of nearby edge-on disk galaxies (eDIG-CHANGES). In this paper, we introduce the project design and major scientific goals, as well as a pilot study of NGC 3556 (M108). The eDIG is detected to a vertical extent of a few kpc above the disk, comparable to the X-ray and radio images. We do not see significant vertical variation of the [N II]/H$\alpha$ line ratio. A rough examination of the pressure balance between different circum-galactic medium (CGM) phases indicates the magnetic field is in a rough pressure balance with the X-ray emitting hot gas, and may play an important role in the global motion of both the eDIG and the hot gas in the lower halo. At the location of an HST/COS observed UV bright background AGN $\sim29\rm~kpc$ from the center of NGC 3556, the magnetic pressure is much lower than that of the hot gas and the ionized gas traced by UV absorption lines, although the extrapolation of the pressure profiles may cause some biases in this comparison. By comparing the position-velocity diagrams of the optical and CO lines, we also find the dynamics of the two gas phases are consistent with each other, with no evidence of a global inflow/outflow and a maximum rotation velocity of $\sim150\rm~km~s^{-1}$., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

We conduct an in-depth spectral analysis of $\sim1{\rm ~Ms}$ XMM-Newton data of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396. The long exposure ensures high spectral quality and provides us with a detailed look at the intrinsic absorption and emission features toward this target. Two warm-absorber (WA) components with different ionization states ($\log (\xi/{\rm erg~cm~s}^{-1}) \sim 4$ and $\log (\xi/{\rm erg~cm~s}^{-1}) \sim 2.5-3$) are required to explain the intrinsic absorption features in the RGS spectra. The estimated outflow velocities are around $-1400{\rm ~km~s}^{-1}$ and $-(100-300){\rm ~km~s}^{-1}$ for the high- and low-ionization WA components, respectively. Both absorbers are located beyond the broad-line region and cannot significantly affect the host environment. We analyze the warm absorbers in different flux states. We also examine the May-2007 observation in the low and high phases of quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO). In contrast to previous analyses showing a negative correlation between the high-ionization WA and the QPO phase, we have found no such variation in this WA component. We discover a broad emission bump in the spectral range of $\sim12-18$ Angstrom, covering the primary features of the high-ionization WA. This emission bump shows a dramatic change in different source states, and its intensity may positively correlate with the QPO phase. We present a study of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) with pseudobulges (bulges with S\'ersic index $\rm n < 2$) in a local close major-merger galaxy pair sample (H-KPAIR). With data from new aperture photometries in the optical and near-infrared bands (aperture size of 7\;kpc) and from the literature, we find that the mean Age of central stellar populations in Spirals with pseudobulges is consistent with that of disky galaxies and is nearly constant against the bulge-to-total ratio (B/T). Paired Spirals have a slightly lower fraction of pure disk galaxies ($\rm B/T \leq 0.1$) than their counterparts in the control sample. Compared to SFGs with classical bulges, those with pseudobulges have a higher ($>2\;\sigma$) mean of specific star formation rate (sSFR) enhancement ($\rm sSFR_{enh} = 0.33\pm0.07$ vs $\rm sSFR_{enh} = 0.12\pm0.06$) and broader scatter (by $\sim 1$\;dex). The eight SFGs that have the highest $\rm sSFR_{enh}$ in the sample all have pseudobulges. A majority (69\%) of paired SFGs with strong enhancement (having sSFR more than 5 times the median of the control galaxies) have pseudobulges. The Spitzer data show that the pseudobulges in these galaxies are tightly linked to nuclear/circum-nuclear starbursts. Pseudobulge SFGs in S+S and in S+E pairs have significantly ($>3\;\sigma$) different sSFR enhancement, with the means of $\rm sSFR_{enh} = 0.45\pm0.08$ and $-0.04\pm0.11$, respectively. We find a decrease in the sSFR enhancements with the density of the environment for SFGs with pseudobulges. Since a high fraction (5/11) of pseudobulge SFGs in S+E pairs are in rich groups/clusters (local density $\rm N_{1Mpc} \geq 7$), the dense environment might be the cause for their low $\rm sSFR_{enh}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in RAA, ?? pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules have long been suggested to be present in the interstellar medium (ISM). Nevertheless, despite their expected ubiquity and sustained searching efforts, identifying specific interstellar PAH molecules from their infrared (IR) spectroscopy has so far been unsuccessful. However, due to its unprecedented sensitivity, the advent of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) may change this. Meanwhile, recent years have witnessed breakthroughs in detecting specific PAH molecules (e.g., indene, cyanoindene, and cyanonaphthalene) through their rotational lines in the radio frequencies. As JWST holds great promise for identifying specific PAH molecules in the ISM based on their vibrational spectra in the IR, in this work we model the vibrational excitation of indene, a molecule composed of a six-membered benzene ring fused with a five-membered cyclopentene ring, and calculate its IR emission spectra for a number of representative astrophysical regions. The unidentified infrared emission (UIE) features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3 and 12.7 micron are ubiquitously seen in a wide variety of astrophysical regions and commonly attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. However, the unambiguous identification of any individual, specific PAH molecules has proven elusive until very recently two isomers of cyanonapthalene, which consists of two fused benzene rings and substitutes a nitrile (-CN) group for a hydrogen atom, were discovered in the Taurus Molecular Cloud based on their rotational transitions at radio frequencies. To facilitate the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to search for cyanonapthalenes in astrophysical regions, we model the vibrational excitation of cyanonapthalenes and calculate their infrared emission spectra in a number of representative astrophysical regions. Understanding the methodological robustness in identifying and quantifying high-redshift bars is essential for studying their evolution with the {\it James} {\it Webb} Space Telescope (JWST). We used nearby spiral galaxies to generate simulated images at various resolutions and signal-to-noise ratios, and obtained the simulated galaxy images observed in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey from Yu et al. Through a comparison of measurements before and after image degradation, we show that the bar measurements for massive galaxies remain robust against noise. While the measurement of the bar position angle remains unaffected by resolution, the measured bar ellipticity is significantly underestimated in low-resolution images. The size measurement is on average barely affected as long as the intrinsic bar size $a_{\rm bar,\,true}>2\times{\rm FWHM}$. To address these effects, correction functions are derived. We also find that the effectiveness of detecting bars remains at $\sim$\,100\% when the $a_{\rm bar,\,true}/{\rm FWHM}$ is above 2, below which the rate drops sharply, quantitatively validating the effectiveness of using $a_{\rm bar,\,true}>2\times {\rm FWHM}$ as a bar detection threshold. We analyze a set of simulated CEERS images, which take into account observational effects and plausible galaxy (and bar-size) evolution models, and show that a significant (and misleading) reduction in detected bar fraction with increasing redshift would apparently result even if the true bar fraction remained constant. The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. Radio and near-infrared observations have observed dozens of protoplanetary disks that host spiral arm features. Numerical simulations have shown that companions may excite spiral density waves in protoplanetary disks via companion-disk interaction. However, the lack of direct observational evidence for spiral-driving companions poses challenges to current theories of companion-disk interaction. Here we report multi-epoch observations of the binary system HD 100453 with the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) facility at the Very Large Telescope. By recovering the spiral features via robustly removing starlight contamination, we measure spiral motion across 4 yr to perform dynamical motion analyses. The spiral pattern motion is consistent with the orbital motion of the eccentric companion. With this first observational evidence of a companion driving a spiral arm among protoplanetary disks, we directly and dynamically confirm the long-standing theory on the origin of spiral features in protoplanetary disks. With the pattern motion of companion-driven spirals being independent of companion mass, here we establish a feasible way of searching for hidden spiral-arm-driving planets that are beyond the detection of existing ground-based high-contrast imagers., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics; 12 pages, 9 figures

We report the discovery of three HI absorbers toward low-power radio active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in a pilot HI absorption survey with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Compared to past studies, FAST observations have explored lower radio powers by $\sim$0.4 dex and detected these weakest absorbers at given redshifts. By comparing the gas properties and kinematics of sources along radio powers, we aim to explore the interplay between AGN and the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Compared to brighter sources at similar redshifts, our observations suggest a slightly lower detection rate of HI absorption lines ($\sim$$11.5\%$) in low-power radio AGNs with $\text{log}(P_{\text{1.4 GHz}}/\text{W Hz}^{-1})=21.8-23.7$. The low-power sources with $\text{log}(P_{\text{1.4 GHz}}/\text{W Hz}^{-1})<23$ have a lower detection rate of $\sim$$6.7\%$. Due to the incompleteness of the sample, these detection rates may represent the lower limits. The selection of more extended sources and dilution by HI emission at lower redshifts may contribute to the lower detection rate of HI absorption lines. These detected absorbers present relatively narrow line widths and comparable column densities consistent with previous observations. One absorber has a symmetric profile with a large velocity offset, while the other two show asymmetric profiles that can be decomposed into multiple components, suggesting various possibilities of gas origins and kinematics. These HI absorbers may have connections with rotating disks, gas outflows, galactic gas clouds, gas fueling of the AGN, and jet-ISM interactions, which will be further investigated with the upcoming systematic survey and spatially resolved observations., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The amount of baryons hosted in the disks of galaxies is lower than expected based on the mass of their dark-matter halos and the fraction of baryon-to-total matter in the universe, giving rise to the so called galaxy missing-baryon problem. The presence of cool circum-galactic matter gravitationally bound to its galaxy's halo up to distances of at least ten times the size of the galaxy's disk, mitigates the problem but is far from being sufficient for its solution. It has instead been suggested, that the galaxy missing baryons may hide in a much hotter gaseous phase of the circum-galactic medium, possibly near the halo virial temperature and co-existing with the cool phase. Here we exploit the best available X-ray spectra of known cool circum-galactic absorbers of L$^*$ galaxies to report the first direct high-statistical-significance (best estimates ranging from $4.2-5.6\sigma$, depending on fitting methodology)} detection of associated OVII absorption in the stacked XMM and Chandra spectra of three quasars. We show that these absorbers trace hot medium in the X-ray halo of these systems, at logT(in k)$\simeq 5.8-6.3$ K (comprising the halo virial temperature T$_{vir} \simeq 10^6$ K). We estimate masses of the X-ray halo within 1 virial radius within the interval M$_{hot-CGM}\simeq (1-1.7)\times 10^{11} (Z/0.3 Z_{\odot})^{-1}$ M$_{\odot}$. For these systems, this corresponds to galaxy missing baryon fractions in the range $\xi_b = M_{hot-CGM}/M_{missing}\simeq (0.7-1.2) (Z/0.3 Z_{\odot})^{-1}$, thus potentially closing the galaxy baryon census in typical L$^*$ galaxies. Infrared excess is an important probe of sub-stellar companions and/or debris disks around white dwarfs (WDs). Such systems are still rare for in-depth understanding of their formation and long-term evolution. One of the largest spectroscopic surveys carried out by the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) recently released more than $3000$ WDs, a significant fraction of which have not undergone excess search. Here we present cross-correlation of LAMOST DR5 WD catalog with the Pan-STARRS, SDSS, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and {\it WISE}. By performing SED (spectral energy distribution) fitting for 846 WDs with $WISE$ detections, we identify 50 candidates with infrared excess, including 7 candidate WD+M dwarf binaries, 31 candidate WD+brown dwarf (BD) binaries and 12 candidate WD+dust disk systems. 8 of the dust disk systems are our new identifications. Utilizing a systematic survey with accurate stellar parameters derived from spectral fitting, our work is an important addition to previous searches for infrared excess from SDSS and {\it Gaia} WDs, and provides a significant ($\gtrsim8\%$) complement to current database of WDs with candidate BD companions and dust disks. The frequencies of WD+BD binaries and WD+dust disk systems are constrained to be $\lesssim3.7\%$ and $\sim1.4\%$, respectively. The properties of candidate dust disk systems are discussed. The extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) represents the cool/warm ionized gas reservoir around galaxies. We present a spatial analysis of H$\alpha$ images of 22 nearby edge-on spiral galaxies from the CHANG-ES sample (the eDIG-CHANGES project), taken with the APO 3.5m telescope, in order to study their eDIG. We conduct an exponential fit to the vertical intensity profiles of the sample galaxies, of which 16 can be decomposed into a thin disk plus an extended thick disk component. The median value of the scale height (h) of the extended component is $1.13\pm 0.14$ kpc. We find a tight sublinear correlation between h and the SFR. Moreover, the offset of individual galaxies from the best-fit SFR-h relation shows significant anti-correlation with SFR_SD. This indicates that galaxies with more intense star formation tend to have disproportionately extended eDIG. Combined with data from the literature, we find that the correlations between the eDIG properties and the galaxies' properties extend to broader ranges. We further compare the vertical extension of the eDIG to multi-wavelength measurements of other CGM phases. We find the eDIG to be slightly more extended than the neutral gas (HI 21-cm line), indicating the existence of some extended ionizing sources. Most galaxies have an X-ray scale height smaller than the h, suggesting that the majority of the X-ray emission detected in shallow observations are actually from the thick disk. The h is comparable to the L-band radio continuum scale height, both slightly larger than that at higher frequencies (C-band), where the cooling is stronger and the thermal contribution may be larger. The comparable H$\alpha$ and L-band scale height indicates that the thermal and non-thermal electrons have similar spatial distributions. This further indicates that the thermal gas, the cosmics rays, and the magnetic field may be close to energy equipartition.

The eROSITA bubbles are detected via the instrument with the same name. The northern bubble shows noticeable asymmetric features, including distortion to the west and enhancement in the eastern edge, while the southern counterpart is significantly dimmer. Their origins are debated. Here, we performed hydrodynamic simulations showing that asymmetric eROSITA bubbles favor a dynamic, circumgalactic medium wind model, but disfavor other mechanisms such as a non-axisymmetric halo gas or a tilted nuclear outflow. The wind from the east by north direction in Galactic coordinates blows across the northern halo with a velocity of about 200 km s$^{-1}$, and part of it enters the southern halo. This creates a dynamic halo medium and redistributes both density and metallicity within. This naturally explains the asymmetric bubbles in both the morphology and surface brightness. Our results suggest that our Galaxy is accreting low-abundance circumgalactic medium from one side while providing outflow feedback., Comment: Published in Nature Communications, file size 10MB

Scattered light imaging studies have detected nearly two dozen spiral arm systems in circumstellar disks, yet the formation mechanisms for most of them are still under debate. Although existing studies can use motion measurements to distinguish leading mechanisms such as planet-disk interaction and disk self-gravity, close-in stellar flybys can induce short-lived spirals and even excite arm-driving planets into highly eccentric orbits. With unprecedented stellar location and proper motion measurements from Gaia DR3, here we study for known spiral arm systems their flyby history with their stellar neighbours by formulating an analytical on-sky flyby framework. For stellar neighbors currently located within 10 pc from the spiral hosts, we restrict the flyby time to be within the past $10^4$ yr and the flyby distance to be within $10$ times the disk extent in scattered light. Among a total of $12570$ neighbors that are identified in Gaia DR3 for $20$ spiral systems, we do not identify credible flyby candidates for isolated systems. Our analysis suggests that close-in recent flyby is not the dominant formation mechanism for isolated spiral systems in scattered light., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, ApJS accepted. The role of HI content in galaxy interactions is still under debate. To study the HI content of galaxy pairs at different merging stages, we compile a sample of 66 major-merger galaxy pairs and 433 control galaxies from the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. In this study, we adopt kinematic asymmetry as a new effective indicator to describe the merging stage of galaxy pairs. With archival data from the HI-MaNGA survey and new observations from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), we investigate the differences in HI gas fraction ($f_{\text{HI}}$), star formation rate (SFR), and HI star formation efficiency ($\rm SFE_{\text{HI}}$) between the pair and control samples. Our results suggest that the HI gas fraction of major-merger pairs on average is marginally decreased by $\sim 15\%$ relative to isolated galaxies, implying mild HI depletion during galaxy interactions. Compared to isolated galaxies, pre-passage paired galaxies have similar $f_{\text{HI}}$, SFR and $\rm SFE_{\text{HI}}$, while pairs during pericentric passage have weakly decreased $f_{\text{HI}}$ ($-0.10\pm0.05$ dex), significantly enhanced SFR ($0.42\pm0.11$ dex) and $\rm SFE_{\text{HI}}$ ($0.48\pm0.12$ dex). When approaching the apocenter, paired galaxies show marginally decreased $f_{\text{HI}}$ ($-0.05\pm0.04$ dex), comparable SFR ($0.04\pm0.06$ dex) and $\rm SFE_{\text{HI}}$ ($0.08\pm0.08$ dex). We propose the marginally detected HI depletion may originate from the gas consumption in fuelling the enhanced $\rm H_2$ reservoir of galaxy pairs. In addition, new FAST observations also reveal an HI absorber ($N_{\text{HI}}\sim 4.7 \times 10^{21} \text{ cm}^{-2}$), which may suggest gas infalling and the triggering of AGN activity., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

As the Universe evolves, it develops a web of filamentary structure of matter. This cosmic web is filled with gas, with the most diffuse gas lying in the intergalactic regions. At low redshift, the gas is predominantly warm-hot, and one of its best tracers is X-ray absorption in sightlines to background quasars. In this Chapter, we present the theoretical background for the formation of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) and present the physical properties of the WHIM from cosmological hydro-dynamical simulations. We discuss the feasibility of detecting the WHIM with X-ray absorption lines, with high-resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra. We present detailed discussion of observing techniques, including the WHIM ionization balance, observable lines, the curve of growth, and the diagnostics using the X-ray lines. We present the current efforts of detecting the WHIM with gratings on-board Chandra and XMM-Newton observatories. We discuss the criticality of WHIM detections reported in literature, where robust detections are likely from the circumgalactic medium of intervening galaxies, or intra-group medium, rather than truly diffuse gas in the intergalactic medium. Secure detections of the most diffuse gas in the low redshift large scale structure may have to await next generation of X-ray telescopes. We end our Chapter with the discussion of future missions carrying dispersive and non-dispersive spectrometers. We present figure-of-merit parameters for line detectibility as well as for the number of WHIM systems that can be detected with future missions. These will define our ability to account for the missing low-redshift baryons and to understand the evolution of the Universe over half of its life., Comment: 44 pages, 16 Figures. Outflows from super-massive black holes (SMBHs) play an important role in the co-evolution of themselves, their host galaxies, and the larger scale environments. Such outflows are often characterized by emission and absorption lines in various bands and in a wide velocity range blueshifted from the systematic redshift of the host quasar. In this paper, we report a strong broad line region (BLR) outflow from the z~4.7 quasar BR 1202-0725 based on the high-resolution optical spectrum taken with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph installed on the 6.5m Magellan/Clay telescope, obtained from the `Probing the He II re-Ionization ERa via Absorbing C IV Historical Yield' (HIERACHY) project. This rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectrum is characterized by a few significantly blueshifted broad emission lines from high ions; the most significant one is the C IV line at a velocity of -6500 km/s relative to the H{\alpha} emission line, which is among the highest velocity BLR outflows in observed quasars at z > 4. The measured properties of UV emission lines from different ions, except for O I and Ly{\alpha}, also follow a clear trend that higher ions tend to be broader and outflow at higher average velocities. There are multiple C IV and Si IV absorbing components identified on the blue wings of the corresponding emission lines, which may be produced by either the outflow or the intervening absorbers., Comment: Accepted for publication in the MNRAS. 15 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Using our measurements of the H$\alpha$ emission line flux originating in the cool (T $\sim10^4$ K) gas that populates the halos of galaxies, we build a joint model to describe mass of the cool circumgalactic medium (CGM) as a function of galactic stellar mass ($10^{9.5} < ({\rm M_*/M}_\odot) < 10^{11}$) and environment. Because the H$\alpha$ emission correlates with the main cooling channel for this gas, we are able to estimate the rate at which the CGM cools and becomes fuel for star formation in the central galaxy. We describe this calculation, which uses our observations, previous measurements of some critical CGM properties, and modeling of the cooling mechanism using the \cloudy modeling suite. We find that the mass cooling rate is larger than the star formation rates of the central galaxies by a factor of $\sim 4 - 90$, empirically confirming that there is sufficient fuel to resolve the gas consumption problem and that feedback is needed to avoid collecting too much cold gas in galaxies. We find excellent agreement between our estimates of both the mass cooling rates and mass loading factors and the predictions of independent theoretical studies. The convergence in results that we find from several completely different treatments of the problem, particularly at the lower end of the galactic mass range, is a strong indication that we have a relatively robust understanding of the quantitative effects of feedback across this mass range., Comment: Submit for publication. 15 pages, 10 figures

We present a multiwavelength study of galaxies around D4UD01, a spectroscopically confirmed protocluster at z = 3.24 to investigate environmental trends. 450 galaxies are selected based on Ks band detection with photometric redshifts (photo-z) at 3.0 < z < 3.4, among which ~ 12% are classified as quiescent galaxies. The quiescent galaxies are among the most massive and reddest ones in the entire sample. We identify a large photo-z galaxy overdensity in the field, which lies close to the previously spectroscopically confirmed sources of the protocluster. We find that the quiescent galaxies are largely concentrated in the overdense protocluster region with a higher quiescent fraction, showing a sign of environmental quenching. Galaxies in the protocluster are forming faster than the field counterparts as seen in the stellar mass function, suggesting early and accelerated mass assembly in the overdense regions. Although weak evidence of suppressed star-formation is found in the protocluster, the statistics are not significant enough to draw a definite conclusion. The CAFE (Census of warm-hot intergalactic medium, Accretion, and Feedback Explorer) and LyRIC (Lyman UV Radiation from Interstellar medium and Circum-galactic medium) have been proposed to the space agencies in China respectively. CAFE was first proposed in 2015 as a joint scientific CAS-ESA small space mission. LyRIC was proposed in 2019 as an independent external payload operating on the Chinese Space Station. Both missions are dedicated to mapping the Lyman UV emission (ionized oxygen (O VI) resonance lines at 103.2 and 103.8 nm, and Lyman series) for the diffuse sources in our Galaxy and the circum-galactic mediums of the nearby galaxies. Spiral arms have been observed in more than a dozen protoplanetary disks, yet the origin of nearly all systems is under debate. Multi-epoch monitoring of spiral arm morphology offers a dynamical way in distinguishing two leading arm formation mechanisms: companion-driven, and gravitational instability induction, since these mechanisms predict distinct motion patterns. By analyzing multi-epoch J-band observations of the SAO 206462 system using the SPHERE instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in 2015 and 2016, we measure the pattern motion for its two prominent spiral arms in polarized light. On one hand, if both arms are comoving, they can be driven by a planet at $86_{-13}^{+18}$ au on a circular orbit, with gravitational instability motion ruled out. On the other hand, they can be driven by two planets at $120_{-30}^{+30}$ au and $49_{-5}^{+6}$ au, offering a tentative evidence (3.0$\sigma$) that the two spirals are moving independently. The independent arm motion is possibly supported by our analysis of a re-reduction of archival observations using the NICMOS instrument onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in 1998 and 2005, yet artifacts including shadows can manifest spurious arm motion in HST observations. The existence of $\gtrsim10^9M_\odot$ supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at redshift $z>6$ raises the problem of how such SMBHs can grow up within the cosmic time ($<1$\,Gyr) from small seed BHs. In this letter, we use the observations of $14$ Quasars at $z>6.5$ with mass estimates to constrain their seeds and early growth, by self-consistently considering the spin evolution and the possibility of super-Eddington accretion. We find that spin plays an important role in the growth of early SMBHs, and the constraints on seed mass and super-Eddington accretion fraction strongly depend on the assumed accretion history. If the accretion is coherent with single (or a small number of) episode(s), leading to high spins for the majority of accretion time, then the SMBH growth is relatively slow; and if the accretion is chaotic with many episodes and in each episode the total accreted mass is much less than the SMBH mass, leading to moderate/low spins, then the growth is relatively fast. The constraints on the seed mass and super-Eddington accretion fraction are degenerate. A significant fraction ($\gtrsim0.1\%-1\%$ in linear scale but $\sim 3-4$ dex in logarithmic scale for $10^3-10^4 M_\odot$ seeds) of super-Eddington accretion is required if the seed mass is not $\gg10^{5}M_\odot$, and the requirements of high seed-mass and/or super-Eddington accretion fraction are moderately relaxed if the accretion is chaotic., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. We present a detailed study of Near-IR selected galaxies in a protocluster field at z = 3.13. Protocluster galaxies are selected using the available mutliwavelength data with the photometric redshift (photo-z) at 2.9 < z < 3.3, reaching a mass completeness of ~10^10 M_sun. Diverse types of galaxies have been found in the field including normal star-forming galaxies, quiescent galaxies and dusty star-forming galaxies. The photo-z galaxies form two large overdense structures in the field, largely overlapping with the previously identified galaxy overdensities traced by Ly{\alpha} emitters (LAEs) and Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) respectively. The northern overdensity consists of a large fraction of old and/or dusty galaxy populations, while the southern one is mainly composed of normal star-forming galaxies which are spatially correlated with the LAEs. This agrees with our previous study arguing the spatial offset of different galaxy overdensities may be due to halo assembly bias. Given the large end-to-end sizes of the two overdensities, one possibility is that they will form into a supercluster by the present day. We also find strong evidence that the star-formation activities of the galaxies in the overdense protocluster regions are enhanced in comparison to their field counterparts, which suggests an accelerated mass assembly in this protocluster., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The spin distribution of massive black holes (MBHs) contains rich information on their assembly history. However, only limited information can be extracted from currently available spin measurements of MBHs owing to the small sample size and large measurement uncertainties. Upcoming X-ray telescopes with improved spectral resolution and larger effective area are expected to provide new insights into the growth history of MBHs. Here we investigate, at a proof of concept level, how stringent constraints can be placed on the accretion history of MBHs by the spin measurements from future X-ray missions. We assume a toy model consisting of a two-phase accretion history composed of an initial coherent phase with a constant disk orientation, followed by a chaotic phase with random disk orientations in each accretion episode. By utilizing mock spin data generated from such models and performing Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations, we find that most accretion models of MBHs can be reconstructed provided that $\gtrsim100$ MBH spins are measured with an accuracy of $\lesssim0.1$. We also quantify the precision of the reconstructed parameters by adopting various combinations of sample sizes and spin accuracies, and find that the sample size is more crucial to model reconstruction once the spin accuracy reaches $\sim 0.1$. To some extent, a better spin accuracy will compensate for a small sample size and vice versa. Future X-ray missions such as the Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics and the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission, may provide spin measurements of $\gtrsim100$ MBHs with an uncertainty of $\sim0.04-0.1$ and will thus put strong constraints on the MBH growth history., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

We continue our empirical study of the emission line flux originating in the cool ($T\sim10^4$ K) gas that populates the halos of galaxies and their environments. Specifically, we present results obtained for a sample of galaxy pairs with a range of projected separations, {\bf $10 < {S_p/\rm kpc} < 200$}, and mass ratios $<$ 1:5, intersected by 5,443 SDSS lines of sight at projected radii of 10 to 50 kpc from either or both of the two galaxies. We find significant enhancement in H$\alpha$ emission and a moderate enhancement in [N {\small II}]6583 emission for low mass pairs (mean stellar mass per galaxy, $\overline{\rm M}_*, <10^{10.4} {\rm M}_\odot$) relative to the results from a control sample. This enhanced H$\alpha$ emission comes almost entirely from sight lines located between the galaxies, consistent with a short-term, interaction-driven origin for the enhancement. We find no enhancement in H$\alpha$ emission, but significant enhancement in [N {\small II}]6583 emission for high mass ($\overline{\rm M}_* >10^{10.4}{\rm M}_\odot$) pairs. Furthermore, we find a dependence of the emission line properties on the galaxy pair mass ratio such that those with a mass ratio below 1:2.5 have enhanced [N {\small II}]6583 and those with a mass ratio between 1:2.5 and 1:5 do not. In all cases, departures from the control sample are only detected for close pairs ($S_p <$ 100 kpc). Attributing an elevated [N {\small II}]6583/H$\alpha$ ratio to shocks, we infer that shocks play a role in determining the CGM properties for close pairs that are among the more massive and have mass ratios closer to 1:1., Comment: 6 pages and 3 figures

Observations of high-redshift quasars imply the presence of supermassive black holes already at z~ 7.5. An appealing and promising pathway to their formation is the direct collapse scenario of a primordial gas in atomic-cooling haloes at z ~ 10 - 20, when the $\rm H_2$ formation is inhibited by a strong background radiation field, whose intensity exceeds a critical value, $J_{\rm crit}$. To estimate $J_{\rm crit}$, typically, studies have assumed idealized spectra, with a fixed ratio of $\rm H_{2}$ photo-dissociation rate $k_{\rm H_2}$ to the $\rm H^-$ photo-detachment rate $k_{\rm H^-}$. This assumption, however, could be too narrow in scope as the nature of the background radiation field is not known precisely. In this work we argue that the critical condition for suppressing the $\rm H_2$ cooling in the collapsing gas could be described in a more general way by a combination of $k_{\rm H_2}$ and $k_{\rm H^-}$ parameters. By performing a series of cosmological zoom-in simulations with an encompassing set of $k_{\rm H_2}$ and $k_{\rm H^-}$, we examine the gas flow by following evolution of basic parameters of the accretion flow. We test under what conditions the gas evolution is dominated by $\rm H_{2}$ and/or atomic cooling. We confirm the existence of a critical curve in the $k_{\rm H_2}-k_{\rm H^-}$ plane, and provide an analytical fit to it. This curve depends on the conditions in the direct collapse, and reveals domains where the atomic cooling dominates over the molecular cooling. Furthermore, we have considered the effect of $\rm H_{2}$ self-shielding on the critical curve, by adopting three methods for the effective column density approximation in $\rm H_{2}$. We find that the estimate of the characteristic length-scale for shielding can be improved by using $\lambda_{\rm Jeans25}$, which is 0.25 times that of the local Jeans length., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The origin of the extended soft X-ray emission around nearby highly inclined disk galaxies (often called as X-ray corona) remains uncertain. The emission could arise from volume-filling hot gas and/or its interaction with cool gas. Morphological properties of the X-ray emission can provide additional information to distinguish these different origins. We define model-independent parameters H50, H75, and H95 - vertical scales that enclose 50%, 75%, and 95% of the total flux of the emission, respectively. We study the correlation of these parameters with galaxy properties inferred from infrared observations of a sample of nearby highly inclined disk galaxies with high-quality Chandra data. We find weak negative correlations between H50or H75and the surface star formation rate (ISFR) and no correlation for H95. However, we detect strong, negative correlations of the vertical concentration of the emission, defined as H50/H95 or H75/H95, with ISFR. Our findings suggest that the X-ray emission around disk galaxies is likely comprised of two components: the extended, weak emission, characterized by H95, is influenced by the outflowing hot gas entrained in star formation driven winds, whereas the strong emission close to the disk which is often rich in cool gas characterized by H50 or H75, is largely impacted by cool-hot gas interaction., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication by ApJ

Using archival {\it Chandra} observations with a total effective exposure of 734 ks, we derive an updated catalog of point sources in the massive globular cluster Terzan 5. Our catalog covers an area of $58.1\, \rm arcmin^{2}$ ($R\leq 4.3 \, \rm arcmin$) with 489 X-ray sources, and more than $75\%$ of these sources are first detected in this cluster. We find significant dips in the radial distribution profiles of X-ray sources in Terzan 5, with the projected distance and width of the distribution dips for bright ($L_{X} \gtrsim 9.5\times 10^{30} {\rm\ erg\ \,s^{-1}}$) X-ray sources are larger than that of the faint ($L_{X} \lesssim 9.5\times 10^{30} {\rm\ erg\ \,s^{-1}}$) sources. By fitting the radial distribution of the X-ray sources with a"generalized King model", we estimated an average mass of $1.48\pm0.11\,M_{\odot}$ and $1.27\pm0.13\,M_{\odot}$ for the bright and faint X-ray sources, respectively. These results are in agreement with that observed in 47 Tuc, which may suggest a universal mass segregation effect for X-ray sources in GCs. Compared with 47 Tuc, we show that the two-body relaxation timescale of Terzan 5 is much smaller, but its dynamical age is significantly younger than 47 Tuc. These features suggest that the evolution of Terzan 5 is not purely driven by two-body relaxation, and tidal stripping effect also plays an important role in accelerating the dynamical evolution of this cluster., Comment: 20 pages, 3 tables and 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Using archival {\it Chandra} observations with a total exposure of 510 ks, we present an updated catalog of point sources for Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae. Our study covers an area of $\sim 176.7$ arcmin$^{2}$ (i.e., with $R\lesssim7.5\arcmin$) with 537 X-ray sources. We show that the surface density distribution of X-ray sources in 47 Tuc is highly peaked in cluster center, rapidly decreases at intermediate radii, and finally rises again at larger radii, with two distribution dips at $R\sim 100\arcsec$ and $R\sim 170\arcsec$ for the faint ($L_{X}\lesssim 5.0\times 10^{30} {\rm\ erg\,s^{-1}}$) and bright ($L_{X}\gtrsim 5.0\times 10^{30} {\rm\ erg\,s^{-1}}$) groups of X-ray sources, separately. These distribution features are similar to those of Blue Straggler Stars (BSS), where the distribution dip is located at $R\sim 200\arcsec$ \citep{ferraro2004}. By fitting the radial distribution of each group of sources with a "generalized King model", we estimated an average mass of $1.51\pm0.17\ M_{\odot}$, $1.44\pm0.15\ M_{\odot}$ and $1.16\pm0.06\ M_{\odot}$ for the BSS, bright and faint X-ray sources, respectively. These results are consistent with the mass segregation effect of heavy objects in GCs, where more massive objects drop to the cluster center faster and their distribution dip propagates outward further. Besides, the peculiar distribution profiles of X-ray sources and BSS are also consistent with the mass segregation model of binaries in GCs, which suggests that in addition to the dynamical formation channel, primordial binaries are also a significant contributor to the X-ray source population in GCs., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Binary-single and binary-binary encounters play a pivotal role in the evolution of star clusters, as they may lead to the disruption or hardening of binaries, a novel prediction of the Hills-Heggie law. Based on our recent {\it Chandra} survey of Galactic globular clusters (GCs), we revisit the role of stellar dynamical interactions in GCs, focusing on main-sequence (MS) binary encounters as a potential formation channel of the observed X-ray sources in GCs. We show that the cumulative X-ray luminosity ($L_X$), a proxy of the total number of X-ray-emitting binaries (primarily cataclysmic variables and coronally active binaries) in a given GC, is highly correlated with the MS binary encounter rate ($\Gamma_{b}$), as $L_X \propto \Gamma_{b}^{0.77\pm0.11}$. We further test the Hills-Heggie law against the {\it binary hardness ratio}, defined as the relative number of X-ray-emitting hard binaries to MS binaries and approximated by $L_{X}/(L_{K}f_{b})$, with $L_{K}$ being the GC K-band luminosity and $f_b$ the MS binary fraction. We demonstrate that the binary hardness ratio of most GCs is larger than that of the Solar neighborbood stars, and exhibits a positive correlation with the cluster specific encounter rate ($\gamma$), as $L_{X}/(L_{K}f_{b}) \propto \gamma^{0.65\pm0.12}$. We also find a strong correlation between the binary hardness ratio and cluster velocity dispersion ($\sigma$), with $L_{X}/(L_{K}f_{b}) \propto \sigma^{1.71\pm0.48}$, which is consistent with the Hills-Heggie law. We discuss the role of binary encounters in the context of the Nuclear Star Cluster, arguing that the X-ray-emitting, close binaries detected therein could have been predominatly formed in GCs that later inspiralled to the Galactic center., Comment: 11pages, 2 figures, 1 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

JINGLE is a new JCMT legacy survey designed to systematically study the cold interstellar medium of galaxies in the local Universe. As part of the survey we perform 850um continuum measurements with SCUBA-2 for a representative sample of 193 Herschel-selected galaxies with M*>10^9Msun, as well as integrated CO(2-1) line fluxes with RxA3m for a subset of 90 of these galaxies. The sample is selected from fields covered by the Herschel-ATLAS survey that are also targeted by the MaNGA optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The new JCMT observations combined with the multi-wavelength ancillary data will allow for the robust characterization of the properties of dust in the nearby Universe, and the benchmarking of scaling relations between dust, gas, and global galaxy properties. In this paper we give an overview of the survey objectives and details about the sample selection and JCMT observations, present a consistent 30 band UV-to-FIR photometric catalog with derived properties, and introduce the JINGLE Main Data Release (MDR). Science highlights include the non-linearity of the relation between 850um luminosity and CO line luminosity, and the serendipitous discovery of candidate z>6 galaxies., Comment: MNRAS in press, 25 pages

The occurrence rates of bright X-ray flares in z<1 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with or without observed supernovae (SNe) association were compared. Our Sample I: the z<1 long GRBs (LGRBs) with SNe association (SN-GRBs) and with early Swift/X-Ray Telescope (XRT) observations, consists of 18 GRBs, among which only two GRBs have bright X-ray flares. Our Sample II: for comparison, all the z<1 LGRBs without observed SNe association and with early Swift/XRT observations, consists of 45 GRBs, among which 16 GRBs present bright X-ray flares. Thus, the study indicates a lower occurrence rate of bright X-ray flares in Sample I (11.1%) than in Sample II (35.6%). In addition, if dim X-ray fluctuations are included as flares, then 16.7% of Sample I and 55.6% of Sample II are found to have flares, again showing the discrepancy between these two samples. We examined the physical origin of these bright X-ray flares and found that most of them are probably related to the central engine reactivity. To understand the discrepancy, we propose that such a lower occurrence rate of flares in the SN-GRB sample may hint at an energy partition among the GRB, SNe, and X-ray flares under a saturated energy budget of massive star explosion., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The detection of highly ionized metal absorption lines in the X-ray spectra of the Galactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) implies the distribution of hot gas along the sightline toward the background sources. However, the origin of this hot gas is still unclear: it can arise in the hot interstellar medium (ISM), or is intrinsic to the XRBs. In this paper, we present an XMM-Newton survey of the OVII absorption lines in the spectra of Galactic XRBs. A total of 33 XRBs were selected, with 29 low mass XRBs and 4 high mass XRBs. At more than 3$\sigma$ threshold, OVII absorption line was detected in 16 targets, among which 4 were newly discovered in this work. The average line equivalent width (EW) is centered around $\sim$ 20 m\AA. Additionally we do not find strong correlations between the OVII EWs and the Galactic neutral absorption N$_{\rm H}$, the Galactic coordinates or the distance of background targets. Such non-correlation may suggest the contamination of the circumstellar material, or the lack of constrains on the line Doppler-b parameter. We also find regardless the direction of the XRBs, the OVII absorption lines were always detected when the flux of the background XRBs reach a certain level, suggesting a uniform distribution of this hot gas. We estimate a ratio of 0.004 --- 0.4 between hot and neutral phase of the interstellar medium. This is the second paper in the series following Fang et al. 2015, in which we focused on the local OVII absorption lines detected in the background AGN spectra. We observed the quasar PG1211+143 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope in April 2015 as part of a joint campaign with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Jansky Very Large Array. Our ultraviolet spectra cover the wavelength range 912-2100 A. We find a broad absorption feature (~1080 km/s) at an observed wavelength of 1240 A. Interpreting this as HI Ly alpha, in the rest frame of PG1211+143 (z=0.0809), this corresponds to an outflow velocity of -16,980 km/s (outflow redshift z_out ~ -0.0551), matching the moderate ionization X-ray absorption system detected in our Chandra observation and reported previously by Pounds et al. (2016). With a minimum HI column density of log N_HI > 14.5, and no absorption in other UV resonance lines, this Ly alpha absorber is consistent with arising in the same ultra-fast outflow as the X-ray absorbing gas. The Ly alpha feature is weak or absent in archival ultraviolet spectra of PG1211+143, strongly suggesting that this absorption is transient, and intrinsic to PG1211+143. Such a simultaneous detection in two independent wavebands for the first time gives strong confirmation of the reality of an ultra-fast outflow in an active galactic nucleus., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 12/23/2017

We present a detailed X-ray spectral study of the quasar PG 1211+143 based on Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) observations collected in a multi-wavelength campaign with UV data using the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (HST-COS) and radio bands using the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We constructed a multi-wavelength ionizing spectral energy distribution using these observations and archival infrared data to create XSTAR photoionization models specific to the PG 1211+143 flux behavior during the epoch of our observations. Our analysis of the Chandra-HETGS spectra yields complex absorption lines from H-like and He-like ions of Ne, Mg and Si which confirm the presence of an ultra-fast outflow (UFO) with a velocity ~ $-$17,300 km s$^{-1}$ (outflow redshift $z_{\rm out}$ ~ $-$0.0561) in the rest frame of PG 1211+143. This absorber is well described by an ionization parameter $\log \xi$ ~ 2.9 erg s$^{-1}$ cm and column density $\log N_{\rm H}$ ~ 21.5 cm$^{-2}$. This corresponds to a stable region of the absorber's thermal stability curve, and furthermore its implied neutral hydrogen column is broadly consistent with a broad Ly$\alpha$ absorption line at a mean outflow velocity of ~ $-$16,980 km s$^{-1}$ detected by our HST-COS observations. Our findings represent the first simultaneous detection of a UFO in both X-ray and UV observations. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the host galaxy of short-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) 150101B. Follow-up optical and X-ray observations suggested that the host galaxy, 2MASX J12320498-1056010, likely harbors a low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) has confirmed the nature of the AGN, making it the first reported GRB host that contains an AGN. We have also found the host galaxy is a massive elliptical galaxy with stellar population of $\sim 5.7\ Gyr$, one of the oldest among the short-duration GRB hosts. Our analysis suggests that the host galaxy can be classified as an X-ray bright, optically normal galaxy (XBONG), and the central AGN is likely dominated by a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF). Our work explores interesting connection that may exist between GRB and AGN activities of the host galaxy, which can help understand the host environment of the GRB events and the roles of AGN feedback., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We propose the use of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect to probe the circumgalactic medium (CGM), with the aid of a spectroscopic survey covering the same area of a SZ survey. One can design an optimal estimator of the kSZ effect of the CGM with a matched filter, and construct the cross correlation between the estimator and the peculiar velocity recovered from the galaxy survey, which can be measured by stacking a number of galaxies. We investigate two compelling profiles for the CGM, the MB profile (Maller & Bullock 2004) and the $\beta$ profile, and estimate the detectability against the synergy of a fiducial galaxy survey with number density $10^{-3}h^3\,$ Mpc$^{-3}$ and an ACT-like SZ survey. We show that the shape of the filter does not change much with redshift for the $\beta$ profile, while there are significant side lobes at $z<0.1$ for the MB profile. By stacking $\sim 10^4$ Milky Way-size halos around z $\sim 0.5$, one can get $\gtrsim$ 1 $\sigma$ signal to noise (S/N) for the both profiles. The S/N increases with decreasing redshift before it reaches a maximum ($\sim$ 7.5 at z $\simeq$ 0.15 for the MB profile, $\sim 19$ at $z\simeq 0.03$ for the $\beta$ profile). Due to the large beam size, a Planck-like CMB survey can marginally detect the kSZ signal by stacking the same number of galaxies at $z<0.1$. The search for the CGM in realistic surveys will involve dividing the galaxies into subsamples with similar redshift and mass of host halos, and scaling the results presented here to obtain the S/N., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, to be accepted by MNRAS

Galaxy evolution is regulated by the interplay between galactic disks and their surrounding medium. We study this interplay by examining how the galactic coronal emission efficiency of stellar feedback depends on the (surface and specific) star formation rates (SFRs) and other parameters for a sample of 52 Chandra-observed nearby highly inclined disk galaxies. We first measure the star forming galactic disk sizes, as well as the SFRs of these galaxies, using data from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, and then show that 1) the specific 0.5-2~keV luminosity of the coronal emission correlates with the specific SFR in a {\sl sub-linear} fashion: on average, $L_X/L_K \propto (SFR/M_*)^{\Gamma}$ with $\Gamma =0.29\pm0.12$; 2) the efficiency of the emission $ L_X/SFR$ decreases with increasing surface SFR ($I_{SFR}$; $\Gamma = -0.44\pm0.12$); and 3) the characteristic temperature of the X-ray-emitting plasma weakly correlates with $I_{SFR}$ ($\Gamma = 0.08\pm0.04$). These results, somewhat surprising and anti-intuitive, suggest that a) the linear correlation between $L_X$ and SFR, as commonly presented, is largely due to the correlation of these two parameters with galaxy mass; b) much of the mechanical energy from stellar feedback likely drives global outflows with little X-ray cooling and with a mass-loading efficiency decreasing fast with increasing $I_{SFR}$ ($\Gamma \lesssim -0.5$); c) these outflows heat and inflate the medium around the galactic disks of massive galaxies, reducing its radiative cooling rate, whereas for relatively low-mass galaxies, the energy in the outflows is probably dissipated in regions far away from the galactic disks., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

X-ray flares have routinely been observed from the supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A$^\star$ (Sgr A$^\star$), at our Galactic center. The nature of these flares remains largely unclear, despite of many theoretical models. In this paper, we study the statistical properties of the Sgr A$^\star$ X-ray flares, by fitting the count rate (CR) distribution and the structure function (SF) of the light curve with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. With the 3 million second \textit{Chandra} observations accumulated in the Sgr A$^\star$ X-ray Visionary Project, we construct the theoretical light curves through Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the $2-8$ keV X-ray light curve can be decomposed into a quiescent component with a constant count rate of $\sim6\times10^{-3}~$count s$^{-1}$ and a flare component with a power-law fluence distribution $dN/dE\propto E^{-\alpha_{\rm E}}$ with $\alpha_{\rm E}=1.65\pm0.17$. The duration-fluence correlation can also be modelled as a power-law $T\propto E^{\alpha_{\rm ET}}$ with $\alpha_{\rm ET} < 0.55$ ($95\%$ confidence). These statistical properties are consistent with the theoretical prediction of the self-organized criticality (SOC) system with the spatial dimension $S = 3$. We suggest that the X-ray flares represent plasmoid ejections driven by magnetic reconnection (similar to solar flares) in the accretion flow onto the black hole., Comment: to appear in ApJ

The TMT Detailed Science Case describes the transformational science that the Thirty Meter Telescope will enable. Planned to begin science operations in 2024, TMT will open up opportunities for revolutionary discoveries in essentially every field of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology, seeing much fainter objects much more clearly than existing telescopes. Per this capability, TMT's science agenda fills all of space and time, from nearby comets and asteroids, to exoplanets, to the most distant galaxies, and all the way back to the very first sources of light in the Universe.
