Objective: This study aimed to evaluate research hotspots and trends in the field of periodontitis and drug delivery systems from the perspective of bibliometrics. Methods: Publications related to periodontitis and drug delivery systems between 2001 and 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the R package “bibliometrix.” Results: A total of 299 articles from 46 countries, primarily India and China, were included in the analysis, and the number of articles related to periodontitis and drug delivery systems were found to be increasing annually. Silpakorn University, the Government Dental College and Research Institute, and the Indian Institute of Technology were identified as the main research institutions investigating the topic, while the Journal of Periodontology emerged as the most popular and co-cited journal in this field. Among the authors of these articles, Thawatchai Phaechamud published the most papers and Gary Greenstein was the most co-cited author. The development of more suitable treatment methods for periodontitis and materials for developing drug delivery systems is a major focus in this research field, with “implants,” “efficacy,” “nanoparticles,” and “mucoadhesive” being the main emerging research hotspots. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive bibliometric study summarizing research trends and developments in the field of periodontitis and drug delivery systems. This information elucidates the latest research frontiers and can assist in conceptualizing new directions in research on periodontitis and drug delivery systems.

Abstract Background In recent times, the American Heart Association has updated its approach to evaluating cardiovascular health (CVH) by replacing the previous “Life’s Simple 7” with the more demanding “Life’s Essential 8” (LE8). However, the impact of enhancing CVH on reducing the risk of pre-sarcopenia and the association of LE8 metrics with pre-sarcopenia remain unexplored. Methods LE8 score was calculated among 9857 participants. Multivariable logistic regression was utilized to investigate the associations between LE8 and pre-sarcopenia. Additionally, the weighted quantile sum (WQS) model was employed to determine the combined and individual impact of LE8 metrics on pre-sarcopenia. To assess the indirect effects of peripheral immune responses on the relationships between cardiovascular health and pre-sarcopenia, mediation analyses were performed. Results In this study, 827 participants had pre-sarcopenia. After accounting for potential confounding factors, the group with excellent cardiovascular health demonstrated an 83% lower risk of pre-sarcopenia compared to the poor cardiovascular health group (OR: 0.17, 95% CI: 0.11–0.27) and a 33% decreased risk of pre-sarcopenia for each 10-point increase in LE8 score (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.62–0.73). Body mass index (BMI) and physical activity (PA) were the critical contributors that decreased the prevalence of pre-sarcopenia in the obese and non-obese populations, respectively. Conclusions A negative association was found between LE8 score and pre-sarcopenia prevalence. Body mass index and physical activity are the primary contributors to the obese and non-obese populations, respectively.

Abstract Purpose Currently, deep learning methods for the classification of benign and malignant lung nodules encounter challenges encompassing intricate and unstable algorithmic models, limited data adaptability, and an abundance of model parameters.To tackle these concerns, this investigation introduces a novel approach: the 3D Global Coordinated Attention Wide Inverted ResNet Network (GC-WIR). This network aims to achieve precise classification of benign and malignant pulmonary nodules, leveraging its merits of heightened efficiency, parsimonious parameterization, and robust stability. Methods Within this framework, a 3D Global Coordinate Attention Mechanism (3D GCA) is designed to compute the features of the input images by converting 3D channel information and multi-dimensional positional cues. By encompassing both global channel details and spatial positional cues, this approach maintains a judicious balance between flexibility and computational efficiency. Furthermore, the GC-WIR architecture incorporates a 3D Wide Inverted Residual Network (3D WIRN), which augments feature computation by expanding input channels. This augmentation mitigates information loss during feature extraction, expedites model convergence, and concurrently enhances performance. The utilization of the inverted residual structure imbues the model with heightened stability. Results Empirical validation of the GC-WIR method is performed on the LUNA 16 dataset, yielding predictions that surpass those generated by previous models. This novel approach achieves an impressive accuracy rate of 94.32%, coupled with a specificity of 93.69%. Notably, the model’s parameter count remains modest at 5.76M, affording optimal classification accuracy. Conclusion Furthermore, experimental results unequivocally demonstrate that, even under stringent computational constraints, GC-WIR outperforms alternative deep learning methodologies, establishing a new benchmark in performance.

The vocal performance is based on a variety of colours and shades influenced by the musical ear and vocal apparatus development. The research aim is to apply a problem-based approach to online music education with a special emphasis on vocal singing with piano accompaniment. The scholars used the oscillation coefficient to identify the main advantages of the singing and piano accompaniment performed at the same time. The results showed that the proposed approach to music performance influenced the development of the musical ear (0.22), improved vocal skills and piano playing skills (0.19). The musician's individuality has not been influenced greatly but holds all the elements mentioned above. The research developed a specialised training programme with three modules for online musical and theoretical training, the development of practical skills, and the development of artistic skills. The research found that 83% of students admitted high effectiveness of the training programme for concert performances and musical competitions. The research's practical significance can be explained by the possibility of developing vocal and instrumental data during the online learning process. The research is important for a comparative analysis to identify the training effectiveness among different groups of vocalists.

All-organic, heavy-atom-free photosensitizers based on thionation of nucleobases are receiving increased attention because they are easy to make, noncytotoxic, work both in the presence and absence of molecular oxygen, and can be readily incorporated into DNA and RNA. In this contribution, the DNA and RNA fluorescent probe, thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4(1H)-one, has been thionated to develop thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-thione, which is nonfluorescent and absorbs near-visible radiation with about 60% higher efficiency. Steady-state absorption and emission spectra are combined with transient absorption spectroscopy and CASPT2 calculations to delineate the electronic relaxation mechanisms of both pyrimidine derivatives in aqueous and acetonitrile solutions. It is demonstrated that thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-thione efficiently populates the long-lived and reactive triplet state generating singlet oxygen with a quantum yield of about 80% independent of solvent. It is further shown that thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-thione exhibits high photodynamic efficacy against monolayer melanoma cells and cervical cancer cells both under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Our combined spectroscopic, computational, and in vitro data demonstrate the excellent potential of thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4(1H)-thione as a heavy-atom-free PDT agent and paves the way for further development of photosensitizers based on the thionation of thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidine derivatives. Collectively, the experimental and computational results demonstrate that thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidine-4(3H)-thione stands out as the most promising thiobase photosensitizer developed to this date.

Numerical models serve as an essential tool to investigate the causes and effects of Arctic sea ice changes. Evaluating the simulation capabilities of the most recent CMIP6 models in sea ice volume flux provides references for model applications and improvements. Meanwhile, reliable long-term simulation results of the ice volume flux contribute to a deeper understanding of the sea ice response to global climate change. In this study, the sea ice volume flux through six Arctic gateways over the past four decades (1979–2014) were estimated in combination of satellite observations of sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice motion (SIM) as well as the Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS) reanalysis sea ice thickness (SIT) data. The simulation capability of 17 CMIP6 historical models for the volume flux through Fram Strait were quantitatively assessed. Sea ice volume flux simulated from the ensemble mean of 17 CMIP6 models demonstrates better performance than that from the individual model, yet IPSL-CM6A-LR and EC-Earth3-Veg-LR outperform the ensemble mean in the annual volume flux, with Taylor scores of 0.86 and 0.50, respectively. CMIP6 models display relatively robust capability in simulating the seasonal variations of volume flux. Among them, CESM2-WACCM performs the best, with a correlation coefficient of 0.96 and a Taylor score of 0.88. Conversely, NESM3 demonstrates the largest deviation from the observation/reanalysis data, with the lowest Taylor score of 0.16. The variability of sea ice volume flux is primarily influenced by SIM and SIT, followed by SIC. The extreme large sea ice export through Fram Strait is linked to the occurrence of anomalously low air temperatures, which in turn promote increased SIC and SIT in the corresponding region. Moreover, the intensified activity of Arctic cyclones and Arctic dipole anomaly could boost the southward sea ice velocity through Fram Strait, which further enhance the sea ice outflow.

In this work, low-softening-temperature and low-modulus SiO2 was introduced as an embedded interface between SiC nanowires (SiCnws) and a BaxSr1−xAl2Si2O8 ceramic matrix to enhance strength and toughness of the ceramic. During the sintering process, molten SiO2 enhances the flowability of the ceramic powders and modifies the dispersion of SiCnws. The strengthening effect of SiCnws was fully realized, and the flexural strength of the optimized ceramics reached 193±16 MPa, which represents an increase of 52.6%. After the formation of the embedded SiO2 interface with a low modulus, cracks can deflect along the SiCnws surface, which is consistent with the criterion of He and Hutchinson. This can effectively extend the crack propagation path, and the fracture toughness (KIC) is thus improved by 94.0%, reaching 3.1±0.5 MPa·m1/2.

Summary: Hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 3 (HCAR3), a class A G-protein-coupled receptor, is an important cellular energy metabolism sensor with a key role in the regulation of lipolysis in humans. HCAR3 is deeply involved in many physiological processes and serves as a valuable target for the treatment of metabolic diseases, tumors, and immune diseases. Here, we report four cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of human HCAR3-Gi1 complexes with or without agonists: the endogenous ligand 3-hydroxyoctanoic acid, the drug niacin, the highly subtype-specific agonist compound 5c (4-(n-propyl)amino-3-nitrobenzoic acid), and the apo form. Together with mutagenesis and functional analyses, we revealed the recognition mechanisms of HCAR3 for different agonists. In addition, the key residues that determine the ligand selectivity between HCAR2 and HCAR3 were also illuminated. Overall, these findings provide a structural basis for the ligand recognition, activation, and selectivity and G-protein coupling mechanisms of HCAR3, which contribute to the design of HCAR3-targeting drugs with high efficacy and selectivity.

Chemerin is an adipokine with chemotactic activity to a subset of leukocytes. Chemerin binds to 3 G protein-coupled receptors, including chemokine-like receptor 1 (CMKLR1), G protein-coupled receptor 1 (GPR1), and C-C chemokine receptor-like 2 (CCRL2). Here, we report that GPR1 is capable of Gi signaling when stimulated with full-length chemerin or its C-terminal nonapeptide (C9, YFPGQFAFS). We present high-resolution cryo-EM structures of Gi-coupled GPR1 bound to full-length chemerin and to the C9 peptide, respectively. C9 insertion into the transmembrane (TM) binding pocket is both necessary and sufficient for GPR1 signaling, whereas the full-length chemerin uses its bulky N-terminal core for interaction with a β-strand located at the N-terminus of GPR1. This interaction involves multiple β-strands of full-length chemerin, forming a β-sheet that serves as a "lid" for the TM binding pocket and is energetically expensive to remove as indicated by molecular dynamics simulations with free energy landscape analysis. Combining results from functional assays, our structural model explains why C9 is an activating peptide at GPR1 and how the full-length chemerin uses a "two-site" model for enhanced interaction with GPR1.

Background Placental histological chorioamnionitis (HCA) is recognised as a significant risk factor for various adverse neonatal outcomes. This study aims to explore if the inflammatory protein levels in neonates were associated with HCA.Methods All women with singleton births from February 2020 to November 2022 were selected and divided into three groups based on maternal placental pathology results: the HCA-stage 1 group (n=24), the HCA-stage 2 group (n=16) and the control group (n=17). Olink Target 96 Inflammation Panel was used to detect the levels of 92 inflammation-related proteins in the plasma of newborns from all three groups within 24 hours after birth. We compared the protein profiles through differential protein expression analysis.Results A total of six inflammation-related proteins exhibited significant differences between the HCA-stage 1 and the control group. Specifically, TRANCE and CST5 were significantly upregulated (p=0.006, p=0.025, respectively), whereas the expression of IFN-gamma, CXCL9, CXCL10 and CCL19 was significantly downregulated (p=0.040, p=0.046, p=0.007, p=0.006, respectively). HCA-stage 2 newborns had significantly elevated levels of CD5 and CD6 and decreased IFN-gamma, CXCL10 and CCL19 in comparison to controls. These differential proteins were significantly enriched in positive regulation of cytokine activity, leucocyte chemotaxis and positive regulation of T-cell activation pathway-related Gene Ontology terms. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis revealed that viral protein interaction with cytokine and cytokine receptor, interleukin-17/NF-kappa B/toll-like receptor/chemokine signalling pathway, and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction exhibited significant differences. Spearman analysis demonstrated a significant positive connection between the levels of CD6 and CD5 proteins, not only in neonatal leucocytes but also in maternal leucocytes. Additionally, CD6 was found to be associated with neonatal birth weight.Conclusions In conclusion, placental histological changes associated with chorioamnionitis appear to influence the expression of inflammatory proteins in offspring. Notably, CD6 and CD5 proteins may potentially contribute to the pathogenesis of HCA-related neonatal diseases.

Abstract Single cell chromatin accessibility profiling and transcriptome sequencing are the most widely used technologies for single-cell genomics. Here, we present Microwell-seq3, a high-throughput and facile platform for high-sensitivity single-nucleus chromatin accessibility or full-length transcriptome profiling. The method combines a preindexing strategy and a penetrable chip-in-a-tube for single nucleus loading and DNA amplification and therefore does not require specialized equipment. We used Microwell-seq3 to profile chromatin accessibility in more than 200,000 single nuclei and the full-length transcriptome in ~50,000 nuclei from multiple adult mouse tissues. Compared with the existing polyadenylated transcript capture methods, integrative analysis of cell type-specific regulatory elements and total RNA expression uncovered comprehensive cell type heterogeneity in the brain. Gene regulatory networks based on chromatin accessibility profiling provided an improved cell type communication model. Finally, we demonstrated that Microwell-seq3 can identify malignant cells and their specific regulons in spontaneous lung tumors of aged mice. We envision a broad application of Microwell-seq3 in many areas of research.

BackgroundSeasonal variations in smoking and quitting behaviors have been documented, with many smokers seeking cessation assistance around the start of the New Year. What remains unknown is whether smokers who are recruited to cessation treatment trials during the New Year are as motivated to quit, or as likely to enroll in a research trial, adhere to a research protocol, and benefit from a cessation intervention compared to those who are recruited during other times of the year. ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to determine whether smokers recruited during the New Year period differ on measures of motivation and desire to quit, recruitment and retention rates, website utilization rates, and short-term cessation outcomes compared to smokers recruited at other times. MethodsParticipants were current smokers who had registered on a free Web-based cessation program (BecomeAnEX.org) and were invited to participate in a clinical trial. The New Year period was defined according to a clear peak and drop in the proportion of visitors who registered on the site, spanning a 15-day period from December 26, 2012 to January 9, 2013. Two other 15-day recruitment periods during summer (July 18, 2012 to August 1, 2012) and fall (November 7, 2012 to November 21, 2012) were selected for comparison. Data were examined from 3 sources: (1) a Web-based clinical trials management system that automated the recruitment and enrollment process, (2) self-report assessments at baseline and 3 months postrandomization, and (3) online tracking software that recorded website utilization during the first 3 months of the trial. BackgroundTobacco cessation among Latinos is a public health priority in the United States, particularly given the relatively high growth of this population segment. Although a substantial percentage of American Latinos use the Internet, they have not engaged in Web-based cessation programs as readily as other racial/ethnic subgroups. A lack of culturally specific advertising efforts may partly explain this disparity. ObjectivePhase I of this study focused on the development of four Spanish-language online banner advertisements to promote a free Spanish-language smoking cessation website (es.BecomeAnEX.org). Phase II examined the relative effectiveness of the four banner ads in reaching and recruiting Latino smokers to the cessation website. MethodsIn Phase I, 200 Spanish-speaking Latino smokers completed an online survey to indicate their preference for Spanish-language banner ads that incorporated either the cultural value of family (familismo) or fatalism (fatalismo). Ads included variations on message framing (gain vs loss) and depth of cultural targeting (surface vs deep). In Phase II, a Latin square design evaluated the effectiveness of the four preferred ads from Phase I. Ads were systematically rotated across four popular Latino websites (MySpace Latino, MSN Latino, MiGente, and Yahoo! en Español) over four months from August to November 2009. Tracking software recorded ad clicks and registrants on the cessation website. Negative binomial regression and general linear modeling examined the main and interacting effects of message framing and depth of cultural targeting for four outcomes: number of clicks, click-through rate, number of registrants, and cost per registrant. ResultsIn Phase I, smokers preferred the four ads featuring familismo. In Phase II, 24,829,007 impressions were placed, yielding 24,822 clicks, an overall click-through rate of 0.10%, and 500 registrants (2.77% conversion rate). Advertising costs totaled US $104,669.49, resulting in an overall cost per click of US $4.22 and cost per registrant of US $209.34. Website placement predicted all four outcomes (all P values < .01). Yahoo! en Español yielded the highest click-through rate (0.167%) and number of registrants (n = 267). The message framing and cultural targeting interaction was not significant. Contrary to hypotheses, loss-framed ads yielded a higher click-through rate than gain-framed ads (point estimate = 1.08, 95% CI 1.03 1.14, P = 0.004), and surface-targeted ads outperformed deep-targeted ads for clicks (point estimate = 1.20, 95% CI 1.13 1.28, P < .001), click-through rate (point estimate = 1.22, 95% CI 1.16 1.29, P < .001), and number of registrants (point estimate = 2.73, 95% CI 2.14 3.48, P < .001). ConclusionsOnline advertising can be an effective and cost-efficient strategy to reach and engage Spanish-speaking Latino smokers in an evidence-based Internet cessation program. Cultural targeting and smoking-relevant images may be important factors for banner ad design. Online advertising holds potential for Web-based cessation program implementation and research.

Liver fibrosis, a common characteristic in various chronic liver diseases, is largely influenced by glycolysis. Quercetin (QE), a natural flavonoid known to regulate glycolysis, was studied for its effects on liver fibrosis and its underlying mechanism. Results showed that QE effectively improved liver injury and fibrosis caused by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). This was supported by evidence of improved pathological features and reduced levels of serum markers such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), total bile acid (TBA), total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), hyaluronic acid (HA), laminin (LN), and procollagen type III. QE also decreased lactate production and downregulated the expression of glycolysis-related enzymes – pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2), phosphofructokinase platelet (PFKP), and hexokinase 2 (HK2) – at both the mRNA and protein levels. In liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs), QE reduced the expression and activity of these enzymes, resulting in reduced glucose consumption, ATP production, and lactate generation. Further analysis revealed that QE inhibited the production of chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1) and suppressed neutrophil recruitment. Overall, QE showed promising therapeutic potential for liver fibrosis by targeting LSEC glycolysis and reducing neutrophil infiltration.

Abstract The antiangiogenic agent apatinib has been shown to clinically improve responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors in several cancer types. Patients with N3 nasopharyngeal carcinoma have a high risk of distant metastasis, however, if the addition of immunotherapy to standard treatment could improve efficacy is unclear. In this phase II clinical trial (ChiCTR2000032317), 49 patients with stage TanyN3M0 nasopharyngeal carcinoma were enrolled and received the combination of three cycles of induction chemotherapy, camrelizumab and apatinib followed by chemoradiotherapy. Here we report on the primary outcome of distant metastasis-free survival and secondary end points of objective response rate, failure-free survival, locoregional recurrence-free survival, overall survival and toxicity profile. After induction therapy, all patients had objective response, including 13 patients (26.5%) with complete response. After a median follow-up of 28.7 months, the primary endpoint of 1-year distant metastasis-free survival was met for the cohort (1-year DMFS rate: 98%). Grade≥3 toxicity appeared in 32 (65.3%) patients, with the most common being mucositis (14[28.6%]) and nausea/vomiting (9[18.4%]). In this work, camrelizumab and apatinib in combination with induction chemotherapy show promising distant metastasis control with acceptable safety profile in patients with stage TanyN3M0 nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

In this work, the effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the microstructure evolution, thermal conductivity, and mechanical properties of Cf/SiC composites during chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) densification were investigated in detail. Compared with composites without CNTs, the thermal conductivity, flexural strength, flexural modulus, fracture toughness, interfacial shear strength, and proportional limit stress of specimens with CNTs of 4.94 wt% were improved by 117%, 21.8%, 67.4%, 10.3%, 36.4%, and 71.1%, respectively. This improvement was attributed to the role of CNTs in the division of inter-layer pores, which provided abundant vapor growth sites for the ceramic matrix and promoted densification of the whole composite. In addition, the high thermal conductivity network formed by the overlap of CNTs and the rivet strengthening effect of CNTs were beneficial for synergistic improvement of thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the composites. Therefore, this study has practical significance for the development of thermal protection composite components with enhanced thermal conductivity and mechanical characteristics.

To enhance the resistance of SiCf/SiC to hydrothermal corrosion in the pressurized water reactor (PWR) environment, structurally tunable Ti3SiC2-based corrosion mitigation coatings for SiCf/SiC were prepared using molten salt synthesis. The influence of various process parameters, such as Si/Ti molar ratio in raw materials, annealing time, and annealing temperature, on the phase composition and the structure of the coatings was explored. Through the process control, the fabricated coatings can be either Ti3SiC2 monolithic structure or TiC/Ti3SiC2 and TiC/Ti3SiC2/Ti5Si3Cx multi-layered structures. The coatings demonstrate strong bonding to the substrate due to in-situ reaction, exhibiting tensile and shear strength of at least 26.9 and 30.8 MPa, respectively. Incorporating TiC as a transition layer further enhances the tensile and shear strength to 41.3 and 51.4 MPa, respectively. Monolithic Ti3SiC2 coatings enhance the thermal conductivity of SiCf/SiC by 10%–12%. Notably, Ti3SiC2 coatings effectively protect SiCf/SiC from hydrothermal corrosion, demonstrating an 83% strength retention rate compared to 71% in the control group after corrosion. However, the Ti5Si3Cx layer exhibits unsatisfactory corrosion mitigation. The Ti3SiC2 monolithic coating has higher thermal conductivity, TiC/Ti3SiC2 multi-layered coating has higher bonding strength, and both have desirable resistance to the hydrothermal corrosion.

Abstract Background Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis of unknown etiology that affects infants and young children but is extremely rare in neonates, especially afebrile KD. We present a case of KD without fever in a neonate and review the literature on KD in neonates. Case presentation A newborn female was hospitalized because her peripheral blood leukocytes increased for half a day. The admission diagnosis was considered neonatal sepsis and bacterial meningitis. She had no fever since the admission, but a rash appeared on her face by the 7th day. On day 11 after admission, there was a desquamation on the distal extremities. On day 15 after admission, ultrasound showed non-suppurative cervical lymphadenopathy. Echocardiogram revealed coronary artery aneurysms in both sides. Finally, the patient was diagnosed with incomplete KD (IKD). The follow-up echocardiogram showed that the internal diameter of both coronary arteries returned to normal three months after birth. Conclusions Fever, rash, and distal extremity desquamation during the recovery phase are the most common symptoms of IKD. When newborns present with clinical manifestations such as rash, distal extremity desquamation and cervical lymph adenitis and with an increased peripheral blood leukocyte count and progressive increase in platelets simultaneously, the medical staff should be highly alert to the possibility of KD even without fever. The echocardiogram needs to be performed promptly. The incidence of coronary artery lesions is significantly higher if neonatal KD patients miss timely diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract Background Displaced lateral malleolus fractures are typically stabilised through open reduction and internal fixation. The biomechanically and clinically efficacy of locking plates and lag screws, particularly in Weber A and B distal fibular fractures remains a subject of contention. This study examines two locking plate designs for lateral malleolus fractures, evaluating their performance with and without interfragmentary screws using finite element models. Methods Utilising CT images of a healthy adult male volunteer, a three-dimensional finite element model was constructed. The Fibula-specific Flank Multiaxial Locking Anatomic Plate (FMLP) and the Conventional Locking Plate (CLP) were subjected to stabilisation, both with and without an interfragmentary screw, mimicking the Danis-Weber A and B lateral malleolus oblique fracture fixation. Loads of 140 N and 70 N, equivalent to 20% of the body weight, were applied to simulate the single-leg and two-leg standing conditions in the axial direction. The von Mises stress (VMS) distributions and element displacements were subsequently analyzed. Results In the Danis-Weber A fracture model group, the FMLP with an interfragmentary screw fixation exhibited the lowest peak VMS values: 51.9 MPa in the fibula, 89.0 MPa in the plate, and 61.3 MPa in the screws for simulating single-leg conditions. Under two-leg standing conditions, these peak VMS values decreased to 25.9 MPa in the fibula, 44.5 MPa in the plate, and 30.6 MPa in the screws, respectively. Furthermore, the overall structural peak displacements during single-leg standing for both Weber-A and B fractures with different implants ranged from 1.61 to 2.54 mm. While standing on two feet, the ranged was from 0.80 to 1.27 mm. An interfragmentary screw at the oblique fracture site resulted in reduced the peak value of VMS in the fibula, plate, screws, consequently decreased the overall structural displacement for FMLP and CLP fixation in lateral malleolus fractures. Conclusions The current finite element analysis (FEA) demonstrates that FMLP exhibits superior mechanical characteristics in Danis-Weber A and B lateral malleolus fractures compared to CLP. The inclusion of an interfragmentary screw, combined with locking plate design, enhances stability for simple oblique distal fibular fractures. The FMLP presents itself as potential as an alternative for lateral malleolus fractures from a biomechanical perspective. Nevertheless, further verification of these results is imperative through subsequent clinical studies.
