Abstract

Segmentation of brain arterio-venous malformations (bAVMs) in 3D rotational angiographies (3DRA) is still an open problem in the literature, with high relevance for clinical practice. While deep learning models have been applied for segmenting the brain vasculature in these images, they have never been used in cases with bAVMs. This is likely caused by the difficulty to obtain sufficiently annotated data to train these approaches. In this paper we introduce a first deep learning model for blood vessel segmentation in 3DRA images of patients with bAVMs. To this end, we densely annotated 5 3DRA volumes of bAVM cases and used these to train two alternative 3DUNet-based architectures with different segmentation objectives. Our results show that the networks reach a comprehensive coverage of relevant structures for bAVM analysis, much better than what is obtained using standard methods. This is promising for achieving a better topological and morphological characterisation of the bAVM structures of interest. Furthermore, the models have the ability to segment venous structures even when missing in the ground truth labelling, which is relevant for planning interventional treatments. Abstract

There is an increasing number of studies on the transradial approach (TRA) for carotid artery stenting. We aimed to summarize the published data on TRA vs the transfemoral approach (TFA). We searched Science Direct, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science databases for the relevant literature. Primary outcomes included surgical success and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complication rates; secondary outcomes included the rates of vascular access-related and other complications. We also compared the crossover rate, success rate, and complications between TRA and TFA carotid stenting. This is the first such meta-analysis regarding TRA and TFA. Twenty studies on TRA carotid stenting were included (n = 1300). Among 19 studies, the success rate of TRA carotid stenting was.951 (95% confidence interval [CI]:.926–.975); death rate was.022 (.011–.032); stroke rate was.005 (.001–.008); radial artery occlusion rate was.008 (.003–.013); and forearm hematoma rate was.003 (−.000 to.006). Among 4 studies comparing TRA and TFA, the success rate was lower (odds ratio:.02; 95% CI:.00–.23) and crossover rate was higher (odds ratio: 40.16; 95% CI: 4.41–365.73) with TRA. Abstract

With the increasingly serious industrial pollution, aircraft structural materials are inevitably exposed to acidic environment during the service. 2024 aluminum alloy was used for acid salt spray experiment under different conditions. The pH values of salt spray experiment were set as 2, 3, 5, the salt spray concentration was 25 g/L, 50 g/L, 75 g/L, and the corrosion time was 24 h, 48 h and 72 h respectively. Combine radial basis function (RBF) neural network with orthogonal experiment design, different experimental conditions were selected as the learning sample set of the neural network, and the results of orthogonal test are analyzed by range analysis. The results show that RBF combined with orthogonal experimental design can accurately predict the corrosion rates under arbitrary experimental conditions, reduce the number of experiment, and improve the prediction accuracy. The prediction result of using both the orthogonal group and supplementary peak group as the sample set is better than that of using only orthogonal group as the sample set. The results of range analysis show that the most important factor affecting the mass loss per unit area of 2024 aluminum alloy is the pH value of the solution, followed by the concentration of salt spray and the corrosion time is the least.

Abstract

A significant proportion of the adult population worldwide suffers from cerebral aneurysms. If left untreated, aneurysms may rupture and lead to fatal massive internal bleeding. On the other hand, treatment of aneurysms also involve significant risks. It is desirable, therefore, to have an objective tool that can be used to predict the risk of rupture and assist in surgical decision for operating on the aneurysms. Currently, such decisions are made mostly based on medical expertise of the healthcare team. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using machine learning algorithms to predict rupture risk of vertebral artery fusiform aneurysms based on geometric features of the blood vessels surrounding but excluding the aneurysm. For each of the aneurysm images (12 ruptured and 25 un-ruptured), the vessel is segmented into distal and proximal parts by cross-sectional area and extracted 382 non-aneurysm-related geometric features. The decision tree model using two of the features (standard deviation of eccentricity of proximal vessel, and diameter at the distal endpoint) achieved 83.8% classification accuracy. Additionally, with support vector machine and logistic regression, we also achieved 83.8% accuracy with another set of two features (ratio of mean curvature between distal and proximal parts, and diameter at the distal endpoint). Combining the aforementioned three features with integration of curvature of proximal vessel and also ratio of mean cross-sectional area between distal and proximal parts, these models achieve an impressive 94.6% accuracy. These results strongly suggest the usefulness of geometric features in predicting the risk of rupture.
