High-strength, flexible, and multifunctional characteristics are highly desirable for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials in the field of electric devices. In this work, inspired by natural nacre, we fabricated large-scale, layered MXene/amarid nanofiber (ANF) nanocomposite papers by blade-coating process plus sol-gel conversion step. The as-synthesized papers possess excellent mechanical performance, that is, exceptional tensile strength (198.80 ± 5.35 MPa), large strain (15.30 ± 1.01%), and good flexibility (folded into various models without fracture), which are ascribed to synergetic interactions of the interconnected three-dimensional network frame and hydrogen bonds between MXene and ANF. Graphene-based sponge is a novel hemostatic material prepared by chemical cross-link of graphene oxide. It has a fast fluid absorption capacity to quickly absorb blood from wounds, activate clotting pathways, and achieve rapid hemostasis. In addition, graphene-based sponge is also a good platform carrier. It can be prepared by organic cross-linking, compounding with inorganic clay, and adding bioactive factors to enhance coagulation stimulation. By these methods, the hemostatic performance of the sponge is further improved, which shows great potential for application in the field of trauma hemostasis. This article reviews the research progress of graphene-based sponges from three different preparation strategies (organic cross-linking, inorganic compounding and adding bioactive factor), summarizes their hemostatic mechanisms, and prospects the development of graphene-based hemostatic sponges.

The abuse of conventional antibiotics leads to increasing bacterial resistance. Nanozyme is a new kind of ultra-efficient and safe nanomaterial with intrinsic enzyme-like activities, showing remarkable potential as a next generation nanobactericide. Graphdiyne (GDY) is a burgeoning two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope with intriguing physicochemical properties, holding a great promise as a metal-free nanozyme. In this study, a boron doped GDY nanosheet (B-GDY) was constructed to simulate the performance of peroxidase (POD). By promoting the decomposition of H2O2 to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), the bactericidal efficacies against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were substantially enhanced attributed to the extremely high catalytic activity of B-GDY. In-depth density functional theory (DFT) calculations illuminate that doping of boron can introduce more active B-defect sites as well as lower Gibbs free energy during the H2O2 decomposition reaction. Notably, B-GDY contributes to significant wound healing and excellent biocompatibility, reducing the biological burden. The design of this nanozyme opens a new avenue for the development of alternative antibiotics.

Effective hemostasis for noncompressible bleeding has been a key challenge because of the deep, narrow, and irregular wounds. Swellable gelatin is an available hemostatic material but is limited by weak mechanical strength and slow liquid absorption. Herein, the design of a gelatin and graphene oxide (GO) composite sponge (GP-GO) that possesses stable cross-linked networks and excellent absorbability, is reported. In this work, the one-step stereochemical antimicrobial finishing of cotton textiles (CT) was achieved by the oxidative copolymerization of a dopamine-menthol derivative (DAM) and dopamine (DA). The obtained DAM-modified CT (P(DAM-co-DA)-CT) exhibited broad-spectrum microbial anti-adhesion properties against bacteria (E. coli and P. aeruginosa), including superbugs (MRSA and VREF), and fungi (A. niger, A. flavus, M. racemosus and P. chrysogenum). Because of its unique stereochemical antimicrobial mechanism, the obtained P(DAM-co-DA)-CT is a non-releasing antimicrobial material that causes no skin sensitization and exhibits good biocompatibility. The coating was also found to enhance the UV-resistant and mechanical properties of the CT. Furthermore, it displayed durable washing fastness and antimicrobial properties after the endurance of 30 laundering cycles. The observed achievements provide a broader understanding of stereochemical antimicrobial surfaces and endow this method with wider applications.

A strategy to improve its photocatalytic performance is still a challenge for the novel Sillen–Aurivillius perovskite type Bi4NbO8Br. Herein, novel Pt modified Bi4NbO8Br composites (Pt/BNB) with sufficient oxygen vacancies were successfully fabricated via a facile in situ chemical reduction method. For one thing, the deposition of Pt nanoparticles brings about a Mott–Schottky effect at the interface to accept photo-induced electrons, leading to an efficient charge separation. For another thing, the electronic metal–support interaction of Pt and Bi4NbO8Br decreases the formation energy of oxygen defects, which could serve as active sites for O2 activation. On account of the synergetic effect of Pt and oxygen vacancies, the dominant active species-photogenerated holes are accumulated on the surface of the photocatalysts, while the additional superoxide radicals are also involved. Hence, Pt/BNB performed with excellent photocatalytic activities in the degradation of wastewater contaminants, and the kinetic rate was 4.64, 10.21, 5.53, 9.80, 1.71 and 4.05 times, respectively, those of pristine Bi4NbO8Br towards methyl orange, rhodamine B, 2,4-dichlorophenol, p-nitrophenol, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline hydrochloride.

The strategy to improve the photocatalytic removal efficiencies towards organic pollutants is still a challenge for the novel Sillen–Aurivillius perovskite type Bi4NbO8Cl. Herein, we report carbon-supported TiO2/Bi4NbO8Cl (C-TiO2/Bi4NbO8Cl) heterostructures with enhanced charge separation efficiency, which were fabricated via molten-salt flux process. The carbon-supported TiO2 particles were derived from MXene Ti3C2 precursors, and attached on plate-like Bi4NbO8Cl, acting as electron-traps to achieve supressed recombination of photo-induced charges. The improved charge separation confers C-TiO2/Bi4NbO8Cl heterostructures superior photocatalytic performance with 53% higher than pristine Bi4NbO8Cl, towards rhodamine B removal with the help of photo-induced holes. Moreover, the C-TiO2/Bi4NbO8Cl heterostructures can be expanded to deal with other water contaminants, such as methyl orange, ciprofloxacin and 2,4-dichlorophenol with 44, 25 and 13% promotion, respectively, and thus the study offers a series of efficient photocatalysts for water purification.

NiTiO3/Bi4NbO8Cl heterostructure photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a mechanical mixing method. The crystal structure, morphology, optical properties and energy band structures of all samples were determined by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflection spectra (UV–Vis DRS), and Mott–Schottky tests. The NiTiO3/Bi4NbO8Cl composites were observed to possess an improved activity in the photocatalytic degradation of organic dye rhodamine B (RhB) under irradiation. In particular, Bi4NbO8Cl modified with NiTiO3 (10% in weight) exhibits the best photocatalytic performance. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the formation of intimate interfacial contact and type-II band alignment between NiTiO3 and Bi4NbO8Cl. From the results of photoluminescence spectra (PL), time-resolved decay spectra (TR-PL), photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the rapid separation and transportation of photoinduced charge carriers were proved. In addition, the proposed mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activities is proposed in this paper.

Ultrasmall silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) with rich surface chemistry and good biocompatibility are promising in antibacterial application, however, further development of Ag NCs for practical settings has been constrained by their relatively weak antibacterial activity. Using the nutritionally-rich medium for bacteria (e.g., Luria-Bertani (LB) medium) to coat active Ag NCs could further improve their antibacterial activity. Here, we provide a delicate design of a highly efficient Ag NCs@ELB antibacterial agent (ELB denotes the extract of LB medium) by anchoring Ag NCs inside the ELB species via light irradiation. The as-designed Ag NCs with bacterium-favored nutrients on the surface can be easily swallowed by the bacteria, boosting the production of the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS, about 2-fold of that in the pristine Ag NCs). Subsequently, a higher concentration of ROS generated in Ag NCs@ELB leads to enhanced antibacterial activity, and enables to reduce the colony forming units (CFU) of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria with 3–4 orders of magnitude less than that treated with the pristine Ag NCs. In addition, the Ag NCs@ELB also shows good biocompatibility. This study suggests that surface engineering of active species (e.g., Ag NCs) with nutritionally-rich medium of the bacteria is an efficient way to improve their antibacterial activity.

We prepared a biocompatible AuAg nanocages/graphdiyne @ polyethylene glycol (AuAg/GDY@PEG) composite. The combination of AuAg and GDY to obtain a synergistically enhanced photothermal effect, and the antibacterial effect of GDY and AuAg are used in combined anti-infective therapy. The in vitro antibacterial activity of AuAg/GDY@PEG was investigated, showing an impressive broad-spectrum antibacterial activity with the killing rate > 99.999%. Based on the photothermal conversion ability of AuAg/GDY@PEG, a simple photothermal immunoassay for pathogenic bacteria was successfully established. Sandwich immune response was performed on a microporous plate, the microplate containing the antibody binds specifically to the bacterium being tested, which then binds to the material with the antibody on its surface, and the signal was a change in temperature under 808 nm near-infrared light. The limit of detection (LOD) for S. typhimurium detection is 103 CFU mL−1, with a range of 103–107 CFU mL−1. This method is accurate, rapid and low-cost, which can be used for on-site detection of pathogenic bacteria in food.

A strong interfacial contact of heterostructured photocatalysts plays a key role in charges migration, thus promoting photocatalytic performance. Benefiting from the unique two-dimensional (2D) morphology and abundant terminals, 2D/2D “face-to-face” WO3·H2O/g-C3N4 heterostructured self-assemblies were fabricated employing tungsten oxide hydrate (WO3·H2O) nanoplates and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) sheets as precursors. Compared to pristine WO3·H2O and g-C3N4, the binary WO3·H2O/g-C3N4 heterostructures exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance towards water decontamination, using organic dye rhodamine B/methyl orange as probes. It is found that WO3·H2O/g-C3N4 with 20 wt% mass ratio (WHC-20) possesses the best photocatalytic activities, with about 3.05 times higher than that of pristine g-C3N4. The remarkable increase performance is attributed to the enhanced evolution of superoxide radicals (·O2−) via photoreduction in adsorbed oxygen molecules (O2−), which are promoted by efficient Z-scheme charges separation and rapid electrons transfer at 2D/2D interface. Given the low-cost, facile synthetic procedure and recycling stability, the heterostructured WO3·H2O/g-C3N4 could be served as a promising photocatalyst to deal with water contamination.

Metal-nitrogen doped carbon is a class of promising catalysts to replace Pt to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a novel three-dimensional (3D) Fe-N-C nanosheets grown on interconnected carbon skeletons is fabricated by a facile route, i.e., in situ polymerization of aniline to obtain polyaniline nanosheets on 3D melamine foams and subsequent pyrolysis of the composites. The catalyst exhibits comparable catalytic activity but superior long-term stability to the commercial 20% Pt/C for the ORR in alkaline electrolyte in terms of the onset potential (1.01 V vs. RHE) and the half wave potential (0.86 V vs. RHE). The outstanding catalytic performance was ascribed to the populated active sites taking advantage of the large surface area, the superior electro-conductivity and the facilitated mass transportation by virtue of the unique hierarchically interconnected porous carbon structure. This work is expected to provide a new avenue to fabricate 3D interconnected porous composites for energy conversion and storage.

Utilizing more solar energy and suppressing recombination of photo-induced charges are primary issues for photocatalyst's design. In this work, BiOBr was introduced into CdTe/TiO2 to construct a novel ternary BiOBr/CdTe/TiO2 composite via a facile solvothermal method. The composition, morphologies, optical properties, specific area, and photocatalytic performances were all investigated in detail. The heterojunction among three-dimensional TiO2 particles, BiOBr and CdTe acts an interfacial channel to boost the charges migration. As a result, the ternary BiOBr/CdTe/TiO2 heterojunctions exhibited higher visible light photocatalytic activities on photo-decolorization of methyl orange (MO) than the pure TiO2 and the binary CdTe/TiO2 and BiOBr/TiO2. Furthermore, the ternary BiOBr/CdTe/TiO2 composites were converted into hollow structure, and showed the better photocatalytic performance, reaching 75% degradation towards MO in 120 min. This study provided an attractive thought to design highly efficient photocatalysts, which possessed a promising for wastewater purification.

Hollow and heterostructured architectures are recognized as an effective approach to improve photocatalytic performance. In this work, ternary TiO2/CdTe/BiOI with hollow structure was constructed via a step-by-step method. In addition, the effect of TiO2 structural regulation and the energy band alignment of BiOI and CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs) with TiO2 in TiO2/CdTe/BiOI on photocatalytic dye removal were also studied. The results reveal that the TiO2/CdTe/BiOI heterostructures with hollow substrates exhibit much higher photocatalytic activities than pure TiO2, P25, TiO2/CdTe, and TiO2/BiOI and ternary TiO2/CdTe/BiOI with solid substrates. For TiO2(H)/CdTe/BiOI, several synergistic factors may be responsible for the remarkable visible-light photodegradation performance, such as strong visible-light absorption by BiOI and larger specific surface area.

Self-supported nanoporous metals are promising catalysts and battery materials due to their continuous channels, excellent conductivity and high surface area. In this work, we found that Cu2+ cations could promote the spontaneous formation of AgCl on Ag surface via microcell reactions. Applying a potential to the silver electrode promotes the surface enrichment of Cu2+ cations, and further speeds the formation of AgCl. After electro-reduced, AgCl was transformed to self-supported silver electrode with nanoporous structures, which shows good catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction and electrochemical stability together with superior methanol tolerance property, compared to the pristine silver electrode. The approach used in this work provides an alternative way to prepare self-supported nanoporous metals.

Graphdiyne quantum dots (GDQDs) have attracted increasing attentions due to its unique electronic, optical, and electrochemical properties. However, the low conductivity and quantum yield of GDQDs limit their application. Here, nitrogen-doped graphdiyne dots (N-GDQDs) are firstly synthesized by a simple, friendly and one-step hydrothermal method. The N-GDQDs show a maximum emission at 410 nm under the excitation wavelength of 319 nm. The doping N modifies the surface defect of N-GDQDs and further greatly improves their quantum yield (from 14.6% to 48.6%). In addition, the doping N induces a strong electron transport ability and good conductivity of N-GDQDs. Subsequently, the prepared N-GDQDs are used for constructing an optical-electrochemical nanosensor for sensitive and selective detection of dopamine (DA). DA can quench the fluorescence of N-GDQDs by forming a ground-state non-fluorescent complex between phenoxy anions (in PBS solution) in DA and pyridinic N sites of N-GDQDs, which leads to a highly sensitive and selective detection of DA with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.14 μM and a linear range of 0.32–500 μM. In the electrochemical detection, DA can be oxidized to DA-quinone under the electric field through N-GDQDs/GCE, which shows a big affinity to N-GDQDs. The LOD for DA is 0.02 μM with a linear range of 0.05–240 μM. Finally, the spiked application for DA detection in human serum samples is investigated, the results show that the method has high accuracy. Our work provides a new carbon quantum dots based sensing platform, which shows great potential in practical application.

Synergistic functionalization of interface coagulation stimulation and liquid absorption capacity is the key to improve the hemostatic efficiency of hemostats. Herein, we prepared a graphene-ophicalcite (OPH) heterogeneous composite sponge (GOCS) by using the heterogeneous gradient composite strategy. The sponge took cross-linked graphene sponge (CGS) as the main skeleton, allowing the OPH to be controllably positioned on the surface of GOCS. The heterogeneous strategy gave full play to the advantages of the material. On the one hand, GOCS had excellent liquid absorption ability, which enriched blood cells and other coagulation components at the wound interface after contacting blood. On the other hand, the OPH at the interface obviously activated platelets and rapidly triggered coagulation cascade reactions, exhibiting fast response and feedback characteristics for coagulation signals. Under the synergistic effects, the blood clotting index value of GOCS was reduced to 33.87 ± 9.97%, which was significantly lower than those of OPH (46.33 ± 16.85%) and CGS (67.53 ± 5.35%). Importantly, GOCS rapidly stopped bleeding within 51 s in the rat femoral artery model, suggesting its great potential in the field of hemostasis. Therefore, this study provides a new idea for the design and preparation of hemostatic materials via heterogeneous strategy.

Construction of semiconductor heterojunctions is an efficient strategy to improve photo-induced charges separation and thus enhance photocatalytic activities. Herein, g-C3N4/TiO2 heterostructures were prepared via a facile thermal procedure, with TiO2 nanorods as matrix and g-C3N4 as visible-light sensitizer. Heterojunctions formed while precursors cyanamide polymerized to g-C3N4 and protonated titanate nanotube (H-TNTs) dehydrated and shrinked to TiO2 nanorods. Notably, confined polymerization of g-C3N4 occurred at both external surface and internal space of H-TNTs with the assistant of vacuum treatment, while NH3 released from cyanamide decomposition yielded abundant oxygen vacancies (VO) in TiO2 nanorods. Compared with pristine TiO2 nanorods, the heterostructured g-C3N4/TiO2 nanorods possess 1.7 times more active in photocatalytic removal of organic dye Orange II. A mechanism was proposed for heterostructured g-C3N4/TiO2 nanorods, being attributed to synergistic increasing light harvesting by VO and charges separation by heterojunctions.
