Continuously seeking the improvement of environmental protection, the limitation of exhaust emissions is of significance for the tire manufacturing industry. The aim of this study is to assess the potential of biofiltration for the treatment of such gaseous emissions. This work highlights that biofiltration is able to remove both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds within a single pilot unit of biofiltration. Due to Ethanol/Alkanes ratios (95/5 and 80/20), high performance levels were observed for low EBRT (16 and 12 s). After twenty days of stable running, the dynamic of stratification patterns could be explained as a result of species coexistence mechanisms. While its impact on performance has not been observed under stable operating conditions, the use of an adsorbent support such as granular activated carbon (GAC) could be relevant to promote system stability in the face of further perturbations, such as transient regimes, that are problematic in full-scale industrial applications., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Main Conclusion: New non-destructive approach to evaluate the retting process was investigated. Increase of retting duration led to a decrease of VOCs emitted by plants and change of color and plant odor. The variation of VOCs and odor could be used as indicators for the degree of retting. In the hemp industry, retting is an upstream bioprocessing applied to the plants to facilitate the decortication of fibres from the central woody part of the stem. This treatment is currently carried out in an empirical way on the ground which leads to variability in the hemp stems quality, and thus to the hemp fibres quality. Therefore, controlling retting treatment is a crucial step for high-performance hemp fibre. In this study, a new approach is used to assess the retting degree by following the evolution of VOCs emitted by plants during different retting durations. Either harvest time or retting induces a change in VOCs released by plants. During plant maturity, volatile compounds emitted decreased with a factor of about 2, in relation to VOCs released at the end of flowering. Regardless of the harvest period, the majority of VOCs and odor concentrations, monitored by olfactometric analysis, decrease gradually until some of them disappear at the end of retting. Likewise, the green plant odor disappears during retting with an increase of dry plants odor and an appearance of fermented odor at the end of retting. Following the evolution of VOCs emitted by plants during retting could be a tool for farmers to improve the retting management.

New emerging issues appears regarding the possible aerosolization of micro-organisms from biofilters to the ambient air. Traditional bioaerosol sampling and cultural methods used in literature offer relative efficiencies. In this study, a new method revolving around a particle counter capable of detecting total and viable particles in real time was used. This counter (BioTrak 9510-BD) uses laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technology to determine the biological nature of the particle. The concentration of viable particles was measured on two semi-industrial pilot scale biofilters in order to estimate the Removal Efficiency in viable particles (RE vp ) in stable conditions and to examine the influence of pollutant feeding and relative humidification of the gaseous effluent on the RE vp . The RE vp of biofilters reached near 80% and highlighted both the stability of that removal and the statistical equivalence between two identical biofilters. Pollutant deprivation periods of 12 h, 48 h and 30 days were shown to have no influence on the biofilters' removal capacity, demonstrating the robustness and adaptation capacities of the flora. In contrast, a 90-day famine period turned the biofilters into emitters of viable particles. Finally, the humidification of the effluent was shown to negatively influence the removal capacity for viable particles, as drying off the air was shown to increase the RE vp from 60 to 85%., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Microbial communities have a key role for the performance of engineered ecosystems such as waste gas biofilters. Maintaining constant performance despite fluctuating environmental conditions is of prime interest, but it is highly challenging because the mechanisms that drive the response of microbial communities to disturbances still have to be disentangled. Here we demonstrate that the bioprocess performance and stability can be improved and reinforced in the face of disturbances, through a rationally predefined strategy of microbial resource management (MRM). This strategy was experimentally validated in replicated pilot-scale nitrifying gas-biofilters, for the two steps of nitrification. The associated biological mechanisms were unraveled through analysis of functions, abundances and community compositions for the major actors of nitrification in these biofilters, that is, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and Nitrobacter-like nitrite-oxidizers (NOB). Our MRM strategy, based on the application of successive, transient perturbations of increasing intensity, enabled to steer the nitrifier community in a favorable way through the selection of more resistant AOB and NOB sharing functional gene sequences close to those of, respectively, Nitrosomonas eutropha and Nitrobacter hamburgensis that are well adapted to high N load. The induced community shifts resulted in significant enhancement of nitrification resilience capacity following the intense perturbation.

This study deals with the potential of biological processes combining a biotrickler and a biofilter to treat a mixture of sulphur-reduced compounds including dimethyl sulphide (DMS), dimethyl disulphide (DMDS) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S). As a reference, duplicated biofilters were implemented, and operating conditions were similar for all bioprocesses. The first step of this work was to determine the efficiency removal level achieved for each compound of the mixture and in a second step, to assess the longitudinal distribution of biodegradation activities and evaluate the total bacteria, Hyphomicrobium sp. and Thiobacillus thioparus densities along the bed height. A complete removal of hydrogen sulphide is reached at the start of the experiment within the first stage (biotrickler) of the coupling. This study highlighted that the coupling of a biotrickling filter and a biofilter is an interesting way to improve both removal efficiency levels (15-20% more) and kinetics of recalcitrant sulphur compounds such as DMS and DMDS. The total cell densities remained similar (around 1 × 10(10) 16S recombinant DNA (rDNA) copies g dry packing material) for duplicated biofilters and the biofilter below the biotrickling filter. The relative abundances of Hyphomicrobium sp. and T. thioparus have been estimated to an average of 10 ± 7.0 and 0.23 ± 0.07%, respectively, for all biofilters. Further investigation should allow achieving complete removal of DMS by starting the organic sulphur compound degradation within the first stage and surveying microbial community structure colonizing this complex system.

Since full-scale biofilters are often operated under fluctuating conditions, it is critical to understand their response to transient states. Four pilot-scale biofilters treating a composting gas mixture and undergoing repeated substrate pulses of increasing intensity were studied. A systematic approach was proposed to quantify the resistance and resilience capacity of their removal efficiency, which enabled to distinguish between recalcitrant (ammonia, DMDS, ketones) and easily degradable (esters and aldehyde) compounds. The threshold of disturbing shock intensity and the influence of disturbance history depended on the contaminant considered. The spatial and temporal distribution of the bacterial community structure in response to the perturbation regime was analysed by Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE). Even if the substrate-pulses acted as a driving force for some community characteristics (community stratification), the structure-function relationships were trickier to evidence: the distributions of resistance and composition were only partially coupled, with contradictory results depending on the contaminant considered., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The spatial and temporal dynamics of microbial community structure and function were surveyed in duplicated woodchip-biofilters operated under constant conditions for 231 days. The contaminated gaseous stream for treatment was representative of composting emissions, included ammonia, dimethyl disulfide and a mixture of five oxygenated volatile organic compounds. The community structure and diversity were investigated by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis on 16S rRNA gene fragments. During the first 42 days, microbial acclimatization revealed the influence of operating conditions and contaminant loading on the biofiltration community structure and diversity, as well as the limited impact of inoculum compared to the greater persistence of the endogenous woodchip community. During long-term operation, a high and stable removal efficiency was maintained despite a highly dynamic microbial community, suggesting the probable functional redundancy of the community. Most of the contaminant removal occurred in the first compartment, near the gas inlet, where the microbial diversity was the highest. The stratification of the microbial structures along the filter bed was statistically correlated to the longitudinal distribution of environmental conditions (selective pressure imposed by contaminant concentrations) and function (contaminant elimination capacity), highlighting the central role of the bacterial community. The reproducibility of microbial succession in replicates suggests that the community changes were presumably driven by a deterministic process.

In this study, we explored methodological aspects of nucleic acid recovery from microbial communities involved in a gas biofilter filled with pine bark woodchips. DNA was recovered indirectly in two steps, comparing different methods: cell dispersion (crushing, shaking, and sonication) and DNA extraction (three commercial kits and a laboratory protocol). The objectives were (a) to optimize cell desorption from the packing material and (b) to compare the 12 combinations of desorption and extraction methods, according to three relevant criteria: DNA yield, DNA purity, and community structure representation by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Cell dispersion was not influenced by the operational parameters tested for shaking and blending, while it increased with time for sonication. DNA extraction by the laboratory protocol provided the highest DNA yields, whereas the best DNA purity was obtained by a commercial kit designed for DNA extraction from soil. After successful PCR amplification, the 12 methods did not generate the same bias in microbial community representation. Eight combinations led to high diversity estimation, independently of the experimental procedure. Among them, six provided highly similar DGGE profiles. Two protocols generated a significantly dissimilar community profile, with less diversity. This study highlighted the crucial importance of DNA recovery bias evaluation.

Aims: The aim of this work was to assess the impact of the applied mass loading on the selection of an efficient microbial community able to degrade a complex mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)., Methods and Results: Two reactors were used and were supplied with a gaseous effluent containing 11 VOCs with different concentrations. The response of the microflora was monitored as a function of time: biodegradation activity, bacterial density and diversity. The results showed that the applied mass loading seems to have an impact on the functioning and the genetic structure of the bacterial community., Conclusions: A high mass loading seems to induce a low efficient functioning in terms of elimination efficiency and a simplification of the genetic structure of the total bacterial community with the apparition of a dominant microflora. A low mass loading seems to favour a better functioning and allows to keep a healthier bacterial diversity., Significance and Impact of the Study: In the treatment processes of gaseous effluents, it would be judicious to define the functioning parameters of the process to keep the diversity of important functional bacterial groups. These results provide also useful information about changes in microbial communities following natural or anthropogenic alterations in different ecosystems.

The aim of this study is to better evaluate the occurrence of an acclimatization-enrichment period, defined as a selection period of consortia having the capability to biodegrade pollutants. In order to perform this evaluation, two experimental strategies were carried out and the results were studied carefully. Two laboratory-scale reactors were inoculated with activated sludge from an urban treatment plant. During the experiment, these reactors were supplied with a gaseous effluent containing VOCs. For both reactors, the composition is different. Three parameters were monitored to characterize the microflora: bacterial activities, bacterial densities, and the genetic structure of Bacteria and Eukarya domains (Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism fingerprint). The obtained results showed that the resultant biodegradation functions were equivalent. The bacterial community structure differs even if six co-migrated peaks were observed. These data suggest that the microbial communities in both reactors were altered differently in response to the treatment but developed a similar capacity to remove VOCs at the issue of this period. Furthermore, it is suggested that the experimental strategies developed in this work lead to an enrichment in terms of functionality and microbial diversity almost equivalent.

A synthetic contaminated gas was generated, representative of gaseous emissions from sludge composting. It was composed of six volatile organic compounds (aldehyde, ketones, esters, sulphur compound) in an ammoniacal matrix. The gaseous stream was purified by biofiltration, in pilot scale biofilters filled with pine bark woodchips as organic carrier for biomass colonization. After reaching a constant high efficiency, with complete removal, the system was disturbed by transient loading shocks. The impact of perturbations was assessed by both performance evaluation (i.e. contaminant removal) and microbial behaviour. The microbial community was analysed in terms of density. The resilience of functional component following a perturbation was evaluated. This work highlighted the longitudinal distribution of both biodegradation activities and biomass density.

A semi-industrial bioscrubber was developed to treat a complex mixture of VOCs: oxygenated, aromatic and chlorinated compounds. In order to optimize the VOCs mass transfer, an original washing agent made up of water and cutting oil was tested, and the impact of this washing agent on bioscrubbing performances was investigated. The results obtained with a laboratory unit show that the addition of oil strongly increases the quantity of transferred aromatics. For these compounds, the apparent mass transfer coefficient k(L)a is lower than with water alone. In term of bioscrubbing performances, comparison of the results obtained with the water-oil mixture and water alone showed that the removal efficiency for aromatics is enhanced: from 12% to 36% (applied load of 852 g VOCs m(-3)h(-1)); the elimination of chlorinated compounds is slightly improved. The addition of oil does not seem to lead to any dysfunction of the microbial communities that metabolize the transferred compounds.

The study of odor dispersion, particularly its modeling, is an important decision tool for estimating the impact of human activities on the environment and its populations. In this sense, software to model the dispersion of odorous gases was developed and is presented. It is based on the theory established by Högström on the odor dispersion of puff emissions. This theory is applied to Gaussian models and takes the frequency of values for odor intensity over any time period into account. Such a model is able to consider the instantaneous characteristics of odor perception by human beings. Nine approaches that explore several solutions within the Gaussian domain for the atmospheric dispersion problem are proposed in software named ODODIS (ODOr DISpersion Software). This software was developed to test the different solutions. Four of these solutions are based on the punctual (or point source) emission or classic equation; two are based on the instantaneous punctual emission equation; and the other three, on the prolonged punctual emission equation (puff models). Measuring units used for the input data may be g s(-1) or OU (Odor Units). The software developed here satisfies the need to obtain instantaneous data of either a passive or an odorous gas at a specific point of an area. The simulation time varies depending on the purpose of the analysis. Mean concentration values may be obtained by integrating the instantaneous results generated by the model.

Adsorption isotherms of some volatile organic compounds (VOCs), present in air at concentrations ranging from 10 to 2500 mg m(-3), were performed onto activated carbon fiber cloth and felt. The VOCs loading air were isopropanol, toluene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane. Isotherm adsorption data were generated. These experimental values were modeled by the equation of Dubinin and co-workers and by the Langmuir relation. Model parameters are discussed as a function of adsorbent materials and VOC structure. Adsorption capacity was generally found higher for the cloth than for the felt. An effect of external capillary condensation onto the felt of compounds with high surface tension was demonstrated for VOC concentrations above 1500 mg m(-3).

The removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from contaminated airstreams has become a major air pollution concern. Improvement of the biofiltration process commonly used for the removal of odorous compounds has led to a better control of key parameters, enabling the application of biofiltration to be extended also to the removal of VOCs. Moreover, biofiltration, which is based on the ability of micro-organisms to degrade a large variety of compounds, proves to be economical and environmentally viable. In a biofilter, the waste gas is forced to rise through a layer of packed porous material. Thus, pollutants contained in the gaseous effluent are oxidised or converted into biomass by the action of microorganisms previously fixed on the packing material. The biofiltration process is then based on two principal phenomena: (1) transfer of contaminants from the air to the water phase or support medium, (2) bioconversion of pollutants to biomass, metabolic end-products, or carbon dioxide and water. The diversity of biofiltration mechanisms and their interaction with the microflora mean that the biofilter is defined as a complex and structured ecosystem. As a result, in addition to operating conditions, research into the microbial ecology of biofilters is required in order better to optimise the management of such biological treatment systems.

Two dynamic flux chambers for direct measurement of odorous compound emissions from quiescent liquid surfaces were investigated under simulated conditions in the laboratory. Initially, a flux chamber built according to the model recommended by French standard NF X 43-104 was studied. This chamber was used in two different ways. The first led to a lack of precision concerning emissions rates from the sampled liquid surface, whereas the second led to an overestimation of the measurements. The second part of the study was devoted to an improved dynamic flux chamber, built according to the feedback from the results obtained using the normalised sampling system. Laboratory tests showed good accuracy and precision. This work underlines the importance of the aerodynamic performances of a dynamic sampling system.

Aims: To investigate the relationships between the operation of the volatile organic compound (VOC) removal biofilter and the structure of microbial communities, and to study the impact on degradation activities and the structuring of microbial communities of biofilter malfunctions related to the qualitative composition of the polluted air., Methods and Results: A microbiological study and a measurement of biodegradation activities were simultaneously carried out on two identical peat-packed columns, seeded with two different inocula, treating polluted air containing 11 VOCs. For both reactors, the spatial structure of the microbial communities was investigated by means of single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. For both reactors, stratification of degradation activities in function of depth was observed. Oxygenated compounds were removed at the top of the column and aromatics at the bottom. Comparison of SSCP patterns clearly showed a shift in community structure in function of depth inside both biofilters. This distribution of biodegradation activities correlates with the spatialization of microbial density and diversity. Although the operating conditions of both reactors were identical and the biodegradation activities similar, the composition of microflora differed for biofilters A and B. Subdivision of biofilter B into two independent parts supplied with polluted air containing the complex VOC mixture showed that the microflora having colonized the bottom of biofilter B retained their potential for degrading oxygenated compounds., Conclusions: This work highlights the spatialization of biodegradation functions in a biofilter treating a complex mixture of VOCs. This distribution of biodegradation activities correlates with the spatialization of microbial density and diversity., Significance and Impact of the Study: This vertical structure of microbial communities must be taken into consideration when dealing with the malfunctioning of bioreactors. These results are also useful information about changes in microbial communities following natural or anthropogenic alterations in different ecosystems (soils and sediments) where structuring of microbial communities according to depth has been observed.

To enumerate microorganisms having colonized biofilters treating volatile organic compounds, it is necessary firstly to evaluate dispersion methods. Crushing, shaking and sonication were then tested for the removal of microflora from biofilters packing materials (peat and activated carbon). Continuous or discontinuous procedures, and addition of glass beads had no effect on the number of microorganisms removed from peat particles. The duration of treatment also had no effect for shaking and crushing, but the number of microorganisms after 60 min of treatment with ultrasound was significantly higher than that obtained after 0.5 min. The comparison between these methods showed that crushing was the most efficient for the removal of microorganisms from both peat and activated carbon. The comparison between three chemical dispersion agents showed that 1% Na-pyrophosphate was less efficient, compared with 200 mM phosphate buffer or 1% Na-hexametaphosphate. To optimize the cultivation of microorganisms, three different agar media were compared. Tryptic soy agar tenfold diluted (TSA 1/10) was the most suitable medium for the culture of microflora from a peat biofilter. For the activated carbon biofilter, there was no significant difference between Luria Bertoni, TSA 1/10, and plate count agar. The optimized extraction and enumeration protocols were used to perform a quantitative characterization of microbial populations in an operating laboratory activated carbon biofilter and in two parallel peat biofilters.

Headspace SPME was used to analyse malodorous sulfur compounds in liquid industrial effluents. A pulsed flame photometric detector (PFPD) was selected for a specific and sensitive analysis. Two fibres, PDMS/Dvb and PDMS/Carboxen, which are particularly convenient for extracting small and volatile molecules were tested. To compare these fibres, both sensitivity and artefact formation were considered. The PDMS/Carboxen fibre showed the lower limits of detection and moreover the least artefact formation yields. It was therefore selected and headspace SPME extraction conditions were optimised. Limits of detection of the target compounds evaluated were 12-31 ng L(-1) and repeatability was around 7%. Due to the adsorption mechanism involved, extraction is strongly influenced by the sample matrix and the low affinity compounds can suffer displacement effects. To investigate the occurrence of this phenomenon, two sampling times corresponding to non-equilibrium (5 min) and equilibrium conditions (60 min) were investigated. An external calibration was carried out by using standard solutions for both sampling times. The developed procedure was then compared to the standard addition method on a real industrial effluent. The results obtained from the two methods and for the two extraction times were in good agreement, demonstrating that even a long sampling time can be used. Therefore, the simple and timesaving external calibration was defined as relevant for an accurate quantification of sulfur compounds by headspace SPME.

The performance of a biofilter packed with Active Carbon (AC) was evaluated. The effluent (alcohol, ketones, esters, aromatic and chlorinated compounds) treated was a representative mixture of most common industrial emissions. To achieve a better knowledge of multicomponent adsorption mechanisms, and to underline the interest of inoculating AC, a control abiotic humidified filter had been operated in the same conditions as the biofilter. For a load of 110 g VOC m(-3) AC h(-1), after 55 days of operation, the removal efficiency was higher in the biotic than in the abiotic filter (85% vs 55%, respectively). Moreover, in the biofilter, at steady state, the elimination of all compounds was almost complete except for chlorinated compounds and p-xylene (removal efficiency of 25% and 64%, respectively). The microbial colonization of AC involved a decrease of the adsorption sites accessibility and enhanced the treatment of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) having a lower affinity for activated carbon. Moreover, while aromatic compounds and MIBK were eliminated along the overall height of the biofilter, pollutants with reduced affinity for AC, such as methanol, acetone, and halogenated compounds were only treated on the second half of the reactor. Thus, the affinity for activated carbon was an important parameter controlling the biodegradation process. Nevertheless, the use of AC as packing material in biofilters treating complex mixtures of VOCs is limited. Actually, similar removal efficiency could be reached, in the same conditions, for a biofilter packed with granular peat. Furthermore, for the biofilter packed with AC, the column height necessary to remove biodegradable compounds, with reduced affinity for the support, was important., (Copyright 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Adsorptive solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibres have proven to be a reliable means of sampling volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air. In this work, polydimethylsiloxane/carboxen (PDMS/CAR) fibres were used to test a new approach of air sampling strategy with SPME in the lab which could lighten calibration procedure and enhance the use of this already rapid, simple, convenient and cost effective sampling technique. Indeed, only one curve can be used whatever the extraction time chosen by the analyst under constant conditions of air velocity and temperature. Ficks' law of diffusion was used to model SPME grab sampling when the fibre was totally exposed to the air sample. Experimental sampling rates were then determined by GC-FID for different sampling conditions, i.e. in a flowing air stream of known velocity ("dynamic mode") and in a stagnant air ("static mode"). These sampling rates were found to be 3.50 and 17.80 mL min(-1) for acetone, 4.06 and 21.20 mL min(-1) for 1,2-dichloroethane, 5.10 and 27.80 mL min(-1) for toluene and 5.36 and 30.80 mL min(-1) for butyl acetate, for static and dynamic sampling modes respectively. Deviation from linearity of the calibration curves, indicating that a significant fraction of the adsorption sites are occupied, were determined. They were found to be approximately equal to 0.9, 1.57, 3.82 and 4.37 nmol for acetone, dichloroethane, toluene and butyl acetate, respectively. Experimentally determined sampling rates of these isolated compounds were also valid when a complex equimolar gaseous mixture was investigated, but deviation from linearity appears earlier. Then, for a given application, sampling times should be chosen very carefully to avoid competitive adsorption and hence, bad quantitative analysis results.

The potential of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for time-weighted average (TWA) sampling of volatile sulfur compounds in air at ppb concentrations was investigated. The target compounds (hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol (MeSH), ethanethiol (EtSH), dimethyl sulfide (Me2S), and dimethyl disulfide (Me2S2)) were extracted using SPME with a Carboxen-poly(dimethylsiloxane) fiber coating, and diffusion was controlled by keeping the fiber retracted within the needle of the sampling device. The effects of several important experimental variables (air velocity, direction of air flow, analyte concentration, humidity, temperature, extraction time) were studied. The uptake by the fiber was not affected by the direction of the air flow or the air velocity. The effects of concentration, humidity, temperature, and extraction time were examined in experiments with a central composite face design. The results showed that all or most of the investigated parameters had a significant impact on the uptake rates of H2S, MeSH, EtSH, and Me2S, which invalidated time-weighted average sampling of these compounds by SPME under the tested conditions. Moreover, reverse diffusion of H2S, MeSH, and EtSH occurred at 40% relative humidity. For Me2S2, the uptake rate had a variation of only 8% within the whole experimental domain, and the experimental value derived for the uptake rate was consistent with the theoretical value. This result was confirmed by comparative analyses of industrial samples by the standard addition method. Therefore, SPME appears to be a suitable technique for TWA sampling of Me2S2 using the Carboxen-poly(dimethylsiloxane) fiber coating. Finally, in an investigation of potential losses during storage of the fiber, no significant losses of the target compounds were detected after 3 days at -80 degrees C.

A quantification method for malodorous sulphur compounds in gaseous industrial effluents using solid-phase microextraction sampling followed by gas chromatography-pulsed flame photometric detection has been developed. A comparative study showed that polydimethylsiloxane-Carboxen fibre led to sufficient sensitivity to achieve the microg m(-3) human perception levels of the five analytes studied (hydrogen sulphide, methanethiol, ethanethiol, dimethyl sulphide, dimethyl disulphide). However, this coating is known to suffer from competitive adsorption, which may lead to inaccurate quantification. Therefore, external calibration can only be used under a limited range of concentrations, which were determined from Fick's diffusion law. This approach was tested on a real gaseous sample and compared with the standard addition method. Good correlations were found for ethanethiol, dimethyl sulphide and dimethyl disulphide. However, for more volatile sulphur compounds (i.e., hydrogen sulphide and methanethiol), the easy-to-use external calibration could not be applied and standard additions had to be performed for accurate quantification.

The physico-chemical characteristics of granulated sludge lead us to develop its use as a packing material in air biofiltration. Then, the aim of this study is to investigate the potential of unit systems packed with this support in terms of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions treatment. Two laboratory scale pilot biofilters were used. A volumetric load of 680 g H2S m(-3) empty bed day(-1) and 85 g NH3 m(-3) empty bed day(-1) was applied for eight weeks to a unit called BGSn (column packed with granulated sludge and mainly supplied with hydrogen sulfide); a volumetric load of 170 g H2S m(-3) empty bed day(-1) and 340 g NH3 m(-3) empty bed day(-1) was applied for eight weeks to the other called BGNs (column packed with granulated sludge and mainly supplied with ammonia). Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide elimination occur in the biofilters simultaneously. The hydrogen sulphide and ammonia removal efficiencies reached are very high: 100% and 80% for BGSn; 100% and 80% for BGNs respectively. Hydrogen sulfide is oxidized into sulphate and sulfur. The ammonia oxidation products are nitrite and nitrate. The nitrogen error mass balance is high for BGSn (60%) and BGNs (36%). This result could be explained by the denitrification process which would have occurred in anaerobic zones. High percentages of ammonia or hydrogen sulfide are oxidized on the first half of the column. The oxidation of high amounts of hydrogen sulfide would involve some environmental stress on nitrifying bacterial growth and activity.

Polydimethylsiloxane-Carboxen solid-phase microextraction fibers are now well known to be very efficient trapping media for the analysis of volatile organic compound (VOC) traces in air. However, competitive adsorption, due to the nature of the coating, considerably limits analyte quantitation. In this contribution, different experimental conditions are investigated to achieve quantitative analysis. Static and dynamic sampling were compared for the analysis of 11 VOCs in a standard gaseous mixture at different extraction times (1, 5, 15 and 45 min). The same experiments were performed with four isolated compounds. Adsorption results from gas mixture and isolated compounds were compared and a common linear range (i.e., where quantitative analysis is conceivable) was determined. When sampling was in the dynamic mode, compounds with lower affinity for the coating showed a very narrow linear range, meaning that competition for adsorption was quickly discriminative. The same experiments in static mode allowed one to obtain wider linear ranges for all compounds, especially for lower-affinity compounds: for a 1 min sampling time, acetone showed a linear adsorption range from 3 to 60 microg m(-3) in the dynamic mode which extended from 5 to 300 microg m(-3) in the static mode.

This work presents the usefulness of five different solid-phase microextraction fibers in the screening of volatile organic compound (VOC) traces in air samples. The performances of these fibers are compared by studying the sorption kinetics in an equimolar gaseous mixture of eleven VOCs. For each fiber, static and dynamic sampling are compared. It is shown that repeatability is better for the dynamic mode (less than 6% for dynamic sampling and 10% for static sampling). The equilibrium time and the sensitivity vary considerably from one fiber type to another. As an example, the classical polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating presented the shortest equilibration time (5 min) but also the poorest sensitivity, whereas the PDMS-Carboxen showed the longest extraction time but the greatest sensitivity. The estimation of the quantity of VOCs fixed on the target fiber allows for the determination of the different affinities of the compounds with the involved sorbent and relates them with physicochemical properties of the molecules. Competitive sorption is observed for the fibers involved with the adsorption process (i.e., PDMS-divinylbenzene and PDMS-Carboxen fibers). These competitions can lead to SPME calibration problems and thus bad quantitative analysis.

Air biofiltration is now under active consideration for the removal of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from polluted airstreams. To optimize this emerging environmental technology and to understand compound removal mechanisms, a biofilter packed with peat was developed to treat a complex mixture of VOCs: oxygenated, aromatic, and chlorinated compounds. The removal efficiency of this process was high. The maximum elimination capacity (ECmax) obtained was approximately 120 g VOCs/m3 peat/hr. Referring to each of the mixture's components, the ECmax showed the limits in terms of biodegradability of VOCs, especially for the halogenated compounds and xylene. A stratification of biodegradation was observed in the reactor. The oxygenated compounds were metabolized before the aromatic and halogenated ones. Two assumptions are suggested. There was a competition between bacterial communities. Different communities colonized the peat-based biofilter, one specialized for the elimination of oxygenated compounds, the others more specialized for elimination of aromatic and halogenated compounds. There was also substrate competition. Bacterial communities were the same over the height of the column, but the more easily biodegradable compounds were used first for the microorganism metabolism when they were present in the gaseous effluent.

Solid-phase micro extraction (SPME) is a promising technique for fast and low cost trace analysis. However, some limitations of the technique were encountered when using a PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)/Carboxen fibre for sampling a mixture of volatile aliphatic amines in air. On the GC chromatogram, two supplementary peaks were noticed in addition to the analyte peaks, thus limiting qualitative and quantitative analysis in this particular case. This paper presents the investigations to identify the artefacts and determine the origin of their formation. First, GC-MS identification, by both electron impact and chemical ionisation modes, demonstrated that the two artefacts were unsaturated amines assumed to be formed by a dehydrogenation reaction of the target amines. This reaction was found to occur during thermal desorption of analytes in the GC injection port and to be catalysed by temperature and by metals consisting of the inox (stainless-steel) needle of the SPME device. It was also demonstrated that artefact formation was not significant when using PDMS or PDMS/divinylbenzene fibres. This difference with PDMS/Carboxen fibre can be explained by the high desorption temperature required for this fibre. Moreover, the microporosity of Carboxen induces a longer desorption time which increases the contact between analytes and inox and thereby enhances artefact formation.
