[1] The Fosdick Mountains, West Antarctica, expose a 15 x 80 km migmatite-cored gneiss dome consisting of migmatitic gneisses, diatexite migmatite, and subhorizontal leucogranite sheets. The Fosdick dome was emplaced and exhumed in the mid-Cretaceous due to oblique extension associated with the West Antarctic Rift system along the West Antarctic--New Zealand segment of East Gondwana. The dome is bounded to the south by a dextral oblique detachment structure and to the north by an inferred dextral strike-slip fault. Within the Fosdick dome and in the detachment zone, granite occupies leucosomes, dikes, sills, and dilatant and shear structures. The pattern of kilometer-scale domains of migmatite and granite suggest that lithologic variations and heterogeneous deformation (boudinage) resulted in pressure gradients that enhanced melt flow and magma accumulation in the Fosdick dome. Steep foliations are overprinted, folded, and transposed by subhorizontal fabrics. The crosscutting relationship is interpreted as a transition from wrench deformation to oblique divergence. Steep structures in the dome host concordant, subvertical leucosome and granite sheets yielding SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages between ca. 117 and 114 Ma. Prevalent subhorizontal domains host large volumes of subhorizontal diatexite migmatite and granite sheets that yield U-Pb zircon ages between ca. 109 and 102 Ma. These ages indicate a timescale for melt influx of approximately 15 Ma and that the transition from wrench to oblique divergence may have occurred in as little as 5 Ma. Granites with crystallization ages between ca. 109 and 102 Ma were also emplaced in the South Fosdick Detachment zone, indicating that the detachment was active during oblique divergence. SHRIMP U-Pb titanite ages between ca. 102 and 97 Ma for late- to post-tectonic diorite dikes are interpreted as emplacement ages and give a minimum age for gneissic foliation development during detachment faulting. The Fosdick Mountains preserve a record of the middle to lower crustal response to a transition from wrench to oblique extensional deformation. Overprinting structural relationships show that a change in the angle of oblique extension can induce accumulation of subhorizontal magma sheets and lead to initiation of a detachment zone. The Cordillera Darwin Metamorphic Complex in the southernmost Andes includes a basement of probable Palaeozoic age, a mid-Jurassic and younger volcano-sedimentary cover, and a suite of Jurassic granites, all of which were jointly metamorphosed during the Cretaceous. Detrital zircon ages presented here show that some of the amphibolite-facies metamorphic rocks previously mapped as basement have a Jurassic protolith. Overall the detrital zircon age patterns for samples of the Cordillera Darwin basement differ from those of the Madre de Dios Terrane of the western Patagonian Andes with which they had been correlated; instead, they are more comparable with those from the Eastern Andes Metamorphic Complex, which apparently developed in a passive margin setting. The paucity of Cambrian detrital zircons indicates that the meta-igneous basement of the Magallanes foreland basin of central and northern Tierra del Fuego was not the main source of detritus for the protolith of the Cordillera Darwin Metamorphic Complex. The possibility is envisaged that the Magallanes Fagnano transform fault boundary between the Scotia and South America plates resulted from reactivation of an older, pre-Jurassic suture zone between the basement terranes of north-central Tierra del Fuego and Cordillera Darwin. The upward transfer of partially molten crust and the formation of gneiss domes and metamorphic core complexes commonly take place by localization of normal or oblique extension in the middle and upper crust. In Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica, a transition from wrench to oblique extension occurred during oblique plate divergence along the East Gondwana margin and intracontinental crustal extension associated with the West Antarctic Rift System in mid-Cretaceous time. Migmatites in the Fosdick dome record steep fabrics formed during wrenching, and associated granite networks display crystallization ages of 117-115 Ma. These steep fabrics are overprinted by subhorizontal foliation and leucogranite sheets with crystallization ages in the 109-102 Ma range. Syntectonic emplacement of granite sheets in the South Fosdick detachment zone indicates that detachment tectonics led to rapid exhumation of the terrain by 100 Ma. The depositional age and stratigraphic correlations of metamorphosed and variably deformed rocks of Mount Everest are poorly known because of limited recovery of diagnostic fossils. Detailed study of Cambrian and Ordovician strata from along the length of the Himalaya has produced a coherent stratigraphy that stretches from northern India to Tibet. Our work also demonstrates that the North Col Formation rocks (= Everest series), between the Qomolangma and Lhotse detachments of the South Tibetan detachment system, still locally preserve sedimentary textures and primary stratigraphy that match those within Cambrian strata ~1100 km to the west in northern India. This demonstrates a coherency of depositional systems and stratigraphic architecture for Cambrian deposits along much of the Himalaya Tethyan margin. It also allows, for the first time, identification of precise depositional ages of several units in the Everest region, in particular, the Yellow Band carbonate and directly underlying siliciclastic strata, which are both shown to be late Middle Cambrian in age. Detrital zircon data presented herein for a sample from these siliciclastic strata contain a similar age spectrum to those from Middle Cambrian strata in northern India, as well as grains as young as ca. 526 Ma, both of which support the depositional age and continuity of depositional systems along the length of the Himalaya. Highly fractured rocks of the Ordovician lower Chiatsun Group in the hanging wall of the South Tibetan detachment system in Nyalam, 75 km to the west of Everest, correlate with Ordovician strata of the Mount Qomolangma Formation on Mount Everest. Our correlations indicate that the base of the summit pyramid of Everest, the foot of the 'Third Step,' is composed of a 60-m-thick, white-weathering thrombolite bed. [1] During dextral oblique translation along Laurentia in western Idaho, the Blue Mountains superterrane underwent clockwise rotation and impinged into the Syringa embayment at the northern end of the Salmon River suture. Along the suture, the superterrane is juxtaposed directly against western Laurentia, making this central Cordilleran accretionary-margin segment unusually attenuated. In the embayment, limited orthogonal contraction produced a crustal wedge of oceanic rocks that delaminated Laurentian crust. The wedge is exposed through Laurentian crust in the Coolwater culmination as documented by mapping and by sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe U-Pb, [Sr.sub.i], and [[epsilon].sub.Nd] data for gneisses that lie inboard of the suture. The predominant country rock is Mesoproterozoic paragneiss overlying Laurentian basement. An overlying Neoproterozoic (or younger) paragneiss belt in the Syringa embayment establishes the form of the Cordilleran miogeocline and that the embayment is a relict of Rodinia rifting. An underlying Cretaceous paragneiss was derived from arc terranes and suture-zone orogenic welt but also from Laurentia. The Cretaceous paragneiss and an 86-Ma orthogneiss that intruded it formed the wedge of oceanic rocks that were inserted into the Laurentian margin between 98 and 73 Ma, splitting supracrustal Laurentian rocks from their basement. Crustal thickening, melting and intrusion within the wedge, and folding to form the Coolwater culmination continued until 61 Ma. The embayment formed a restraining bend at the end of the dextral transpressional suture. Clockwise rotation of the impinging superterrane and overthrusting of Laurentia that produced the crustal wedge in the Coolwater culmination are predicted by oblique collision into the Syringa embayment. Magmatic and detrital zircon ages from the Rocas Verdes basin, a tectonically juxtaposed remnant of sea floor in the Magallanes fold and thrust belt (southern Patagonia, South America), indicates that a rifting phase of the Rocas Verdes basin occurred between 152 and 142 Ma, and was accompanied by bimodal magmatism. A dacite dyke cross-cutting pillow-basalt successions and a plagiogranite dyke in mixed mafic felsic terranes of the basal Sanniento Ophiolite Complex contain 150 Ma zircon crystals, indicating that Inafic submarine volcanism had started prior to or during the Late Jurassic, 10-15 Ma earlier than previously thought. The silicic pyroclastic rocks of the Toblfera Formation, with two samples dated at 148 and 142 Ma, were heralded by synrift sedimentation along fault-bounded grabens within Palaeozoic metasediments. No evidence for an active volcanic arc during the early formation of the Rocas Verdes basin was detected in detrital zircon grains of the lower sedimentary member of the Tobifera Formation. A minimum of 25 Ma of continuous sedimentation in the Rocas Verdes basin is suggested by detrital zircon grains in the upper member of the Zapata Formation. The Rocas Verdes basin was rimmed on the western side by an incipient and subaerial magmatic arc only in its later evolution.

The extent and nature of the Archaean-Palaeoproterozoic craton of Rio de la Plata of southern South America, a major but poorly understood crustal component in Neoproterozoic plate reconstructions, as well as the depositional, metamorphic and magmatic history of the surrounding orogenic belts, are reviewed and reassessed, in part through the analysis of material recovered from deep boreholes in western Argentina that penetrated Palaeozoic cover into basement. U--Pb SHRIMP zircon ages for these samples of 2162[+ or -]6 Ma (diorite), 2189[+ or -]14 Ma (amphibolitic schist) and 2088[+ or -]6 Ma (granite) encompass the range of ages determined for the major Palaeoproterozoic orogenic events in the exposed parts of the craton close to the Atlantic coasts of Uruguay and Argentina. Taken together with the geochemical and Nd-isotope characteristics of these samples and an olivine gabhro from a further borehole that failed to yield zircon, these results strongly suggest that the Rio de la Plata craton is extremely uniform in its dominant ehrono-tectonic and lithological make-up, and that it extends westwards as far as the 535-520 Ma Pampean orogenic belt, against which it probably has a fault contact. U--Pb SHRIMP zircon detrital age patterns are presented for representative metasedimentary samples from the craton cover in the Tandilia belt of eastern Argentina, and from the Pampean (Cambrian) and Famatinian (Ordovician) belts to the west of the craton. Whereas the oldest cover rocks in Tandilia clearly show material derived from the underlying craton, such detritus only appears in the younger (Ordovician) units to the west. Sedimentary protoliths in the Pampean belt were dominated by Neoproterozoic (broadly ~ 600 Ma) and late Mesoproterozoic (broadly ~ 1100 Ma) provenance, and derivation from the Rio de la Plata craton is highly unlikely. Regional considerations, including previously published zircon data, palaeocurrent and structural data, suggest that these rocks must have had an origin within Gondwana-forming blocks, for which the closest identifiable sources are 'Brazilian' and 'African' (Namaqua-Natal). Consequently, the preferred model for the Pampean orogeny is that the Rio de la Plata craton reached its present position by large-scale dextral strike-slip movement against fore-arc sedimentary sequences that had developed on the southern and western margins of the Kalahari craton during the Early Cambrian. In the final stage the displaced sedimentary sequences outboard of the RPC collided with the Mesoproterozoic Western Sierras Pampeanas terrane, which was at the time attached to the large Amazonia craton and other smaller continental blocks, such as Arequipa--Antofalla and Rio Apa. Protracted relative displacement of the RPC after the Pampean Orogeny led to its final position. U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology from the upper Cambrian to Devonian part of the Ellsworth Mountains succession, Antarctica, yields dominant late Mesoproterozoic and late Neoproterozoic-Cambrian age populations that are consistent with a provenance from within Gondwana. Hf isotope compositions reveal a source predominantly within west Gondwana and identify a change in provenance up-stratigraphy that coincides with the change of sedimentation setting from active rift to passive margin, which has been independently determined by stratigraphic, structural, and geochemical arguments. For the Late Cambrian Frasier Ridge Formation, late Mesoproterozoic grains have positive [[epsilon].sub.Hf] values, suggesting derivation from juvenile crust, and late Neoproterozoic-Cambrian grains have [[epsilon].sub.Hf] values greater than -5, consistent with remelting of similar juvenile late Mesoproterozoic crust during the Pan African-Ross orogenies. Provenance during rifting was from proximal sources from within west Gondwana, most likely, southernmost Africa and basement to the Ellsworth-Whitmore Mountains block. At higher stratigraphic levels where deposition occurred along a passive margin, in the early Ordovician Mount Twiss Member and middle Devonian Mount Wyatt Earp Formation, late Neo-proterozoic-Cambrian grains have [[epsilon].sub.Hf] values less than -5; this means that early Mesoproterozoic-Archean crust was remelted to generate these zircons. Provenance was from a more expansive source region within west Gondwana, and probably included the Kaapvaal and Congo cratons of south and west Africa. Isolated outcrops of sedimentary rock of uncertain age at Mount Woollard and the Whitmore Mountains have detrital zircon signatures similar to the Frasier Ridge Formation, suggesting correlation with these Late Cambrian deposits. Sedimentary rock from the Stewart Hills contains some late Mesoproterozoic grains with lower [[epsilon].sub.Hf] values than the previously mentioned samples. This suggests that the Stewart Hills sample has a provenance from within east Gondwana and was possibly deposited on the East Antarctic craton prior to the Ross orogeny and is not part of the displaced Ellsworth-Whitmore Mountains crustal block. Marquez (d) Keywords: Patagonia; Gondwana; Sierras Australes; Cape fold belt; continental collision; U-Pb zircon Abstract: A review of the post-Cambrian igneous, structural and metamorphic history of Patagonia, largely revealed by a five-year programme of U-Pb zircon dating (32 samples), geochemical and isotope analysis, results in a new Late Palaeozoic collision model as the probable cause of the Gondwanide fold belts of South America and South Africa. In the northeastern part of the North Patagonian Massif, Cambro-Ordovician metasediments with a Gondwana provenance are intruded by Mid Ordovician granites analogous to those of the Famatinian arc of NW Argentina; this area is interpreted as Gondwana continental crust at least from Devonian times, probably underlain by Neoproterozoic crystalline basement affected by both Pampean and Famatinian events, with a Cambrian rifting episode previously identified in the basement of the Sierra de la Ventana. In the Devonian (following collision of the Argentine Precordillera terrane to the north), the site of magmatism jumped to the western and southwestern margins of the North Patagonian Massif, although as yet the tectonics of this magmatic event are poorly constrained. This was followed by Early Carboniferous I-type granites representing a subduction-related magmatic are and Mid Carboniferous S-type granites representing crustal anatexis. The disposition of these rocks implies that the North Patagonian Massif was in the upper plate, with northeasterly subduction beneath Gondwana prior to the collision of a southern landmass represented by the Deseado Massif and its probable extension in southeastern Patagonia. This 'Deseado terrane' may have originally rifted off from a similar position during the Cambrian episode. Intense metamorphism and granite emplacement in the upper plate continued into the Early Permian. Known aspects of Late Palaeozoic sedimentation, metamorphism, and deformation in the Sierra de la Ventana and adjacent Cape Fold Belt of South Africa are encompassed within this model. It is also compatible with modern geophysical and palaeomagnetic data that do not support previous hypotheses of southward-directed subduction and collision along the northern limit of Patagonia. Subsequent Permian break-off of the subducted plate, perhaps with delamination of the lower part of the upper plate, allowed access of heat to the overlying Gondwana margin and resulted in voluminous and widespread silicic plutonism and volcanism throughout Permian and into Triassic times. Thus the new model addresses and attempts to explain three long-standing geological enigmas -- the origin of the Gondwanide fold belts, the origin of Patagonia, and the cause of widespread Permian silicic magmatism (Choiyoi province) in southern South America. Differing significantly from previous models, it has new implications for the crustal structure, mineral resources, and plant and animal distribution in this part of Gondwana, since the southern landmass would have had an independent evolution throughout the Early Palaeozoic. Zircons gneisses and migmatites collected from the Antarctic Peninsula have different core-rim hafnium isotope ratio relationships depending on whether evidence for zircon dissolution is present or absent. Two samples contain inherited zircon that is partially dissolved. In these samples, the [sup.176]Hf/[sup.177]Hf rations of the inherited zircon and new magmatic zircon rims are, on average, indistinguishable and consistent with in situ melting. In such cases the hafnium isotopic composition of the melt was probably strongly influenced by the dissolved zircon component at the source. Variation in [sup.176]Hf/[sup.177]Hf within the magmatic zircon rims from grain to grain suggests that Hf isotopes were only partially homogenized during melt migration; alternatively, zircon growth may have taken place within small volumes of partial melt. Other samples do not preserve textural evidence for zircon dissolution during melt generation; in these samples the [sup.176]Hf/[sup.177]Hf values of the inherited zircon and new magmatic zircon rims are different. The zircon rims apparently suggest a source of less evolved hafnium than that contained within the inherited zircon. Whether this relates to a separate juvenile source or, alternatively, is derived from minerals other than zircon at the source, cannot be resolved. Inherited zircon, irrespective of age, has been strongly influenced by the reworking of a juvenile Late Mesoproterozoic source, suggesting that such crust underlies the Antarctic Peninsula. Our results therefore suggest that Hf isotope analyses provide great potential for future studies investigating the source and processes involved in the generation of crustal melts.

We report the discovery of massif-type anorthosites in the Andean basement of the Western Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina. U-Pb zircon dating (by sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe) of a cogenetic gabbronorite dyke yields ages of 1070 [+ or -] 41 Ma for igneous emplacement and 431 [+ or -] 40 Ma for metamorphism. These anorthosites are petrologically and geochemically comparable with those of the Grenville province of Laurentia. Palaeogeographical reconstructions of Rodinia at 1.0-1.1 Ga suggest that the Sierras Pampeanas anorthosites were part of a large anorthosite province in the late Mesoproterozoic. New U-Pb radiometric dates for K-bentonite horizons within the Lower Cambrian to Middle Ordovician platform carbonates from the Precordillera terrane of NW Argentina provide further constraints on models for the allochthonous or parautochthonnus accretion of this terrane. Two K-bentonite layers from the Talacasto section yield indistinguishable sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb zircon dates of 469.5 [+ or -] 3.2 Ma and 470.1 [+ or -] 3.3 Ma respectively. These are within uncertainty of the U-Pb SHRIMP zircon date of 468.3 [+ or -] 3.4 Ma for a porphyritic rhyolite from the Famatinian magmatic arc, Sierra de las Planchadas, near Rio Chaschuil. Geochemical and isotope data also demonstrate the similarity of the K-bentonite and Chaschuil rhyolite parent magmas. Thus, it is highly probable that the Famatinian arc volcanoes provided the ash for the K-bentonite horizons, suggesting proximity to the Precordillera terrane during the deposition of the Lower Cambrian to Middle Ordovician platform carbonates. This implication supports a mid-Ordovician collision model, but could also be compatible with a parautochthonous model for docking of the Precordillera terrane, by movement along the Pacific margin of Gondwana, rather than across the lapetus Ocean. U--Pb SHRIMP ages are reported for three rhyolite flows from the Lebombo rift region of the Karoo volcanic province. Two flows are interbedded with the Sabie River Basalt Formation and a third sample is from the overlying rhyolitic Jozini Formation. The interbedded rhyolites yield ages of 182.0 [+ or -] 2.1 and 179.9 [+ or -] 1.8 Ma, whilst the overlying Jozini Formation rhyolite yields an age of 182.1 [+ or -] 2.9 Ma. Combined with existing [sup.40]Ar/[sup.39]Ar geochronology, the new SHRIMP data fine-tunes the chronology of the Karoo volcanic province and indicates the 12 km succession of volcanic rocks in the Lebombo rift were erupted in 1-2 million years and lends considerable support to the links between the Pleinsbachian--Toarcian extinction event and the global environmental impact of Karoo volcanism. U-Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe data together with geochemical and Nd isotope analyses obtained in the basement complex of the Sierra de la Ventana Fold Belt indicate that the Early Palaeozoic passive margin history of the basin followed Cambrian magmatism related to rifting in a 600 Ma Neoproterozoic crust. The Cambrian episode started with intrusion of 531 [+ or -] 4 and 524 [+ or -] 5 Ma A- and I-type granites derived from a dehydrated infracrustal source ([epsilon][Nd.sub.530] -3.1 to -5.9), and culminated with eruption of high-Zr peralkaline spherulitic rhyolites derived from an undepleted lithospheric mantle (509 [+ or -] 5 Ma; [epsilon][Nd.sub.509] +0.5 to +1.0). These rift-related magmatic rocks were covered by shelf sediments deposited along a once-continuous passive margin, encompassing the Sierra de la Ventana Fold Belt, the Cape Fold Belt, the Falkland/Malvinas microplate and the Ellsworth Mountains block in Antarctica. The Cambrian rifting event defined the outline shape of the southern part of Gondwana, and can be regarded as the initiation of the supercontinent stage, which lasted until Jurassic break-up. The conjugate continental fragments separated from Gondwana during the Cambrian rifting could be the source for microcontinents with c. 1000 Ma basement rocks that collided with the proto-Andean margin during Ordovician-Silurian times. A revised pre-Jurassic chronology is presented for the Antarctic Peninsula on the basis of new U-Pb zircon dating, using both conventional (11 samples) and SHRIMP microprobe data (10 samples). The age range for plutonism and high-grade metamorphism is from 435 [+ or -] 8 Ma (Silurian) to c. 206 Ma (approximately the Triassic-Jurassic boundary), with peaks of activity in Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian and mid-Triassic times, although some are represented by rocks with limited outcrops. The new data confirm the importance of Mid- and latest Triassic magmatic events, previously identified using Rb-Sr geochronology. The Adie Inlet gneiss, previously thought to be Neoproterozoic, is recognized as a Permian migmatite derived from paragneiss with a provenance dominated by Cambrian granitoids. Granite gneiss from NW Palmer Land, previously dated as Cambrian, is shown to be Triassic. Detrital zircons in metasedimentary rocks, and inherited zircons in granitoids, are dominated by Mesoproterozoic to Cambrian components, with sparse Palaeoproterozoic to Archaean grains, suggesting sources within Gondwana. At times these sources were nearby, as shown by an Archaean cobble-sized granite clast from a Permo-Triassic conglomerate; another clast in the same conglomerate, previously thought to be Devonian in age, has an Ordovician crystallization age. Zircons found in the stockwork zones of the massive sulphide Los Frailes deposit, Iberian Pyrite Belt, are interpreted to have grown during the hydro thermal alteration of host felsic volcanic rocks. Ion microprobe (SHRIMP) dating gives a 206Pb/238U age of 345.7 [+ or -] 4.6 Ma (2[Sigma]) and together with published spore data from the deposit suggest an age of uppermost Devonian to lowermost Carboniferous. Stockwork zircons offer the possibility of precisely defining the emplacement ages of these giant sulphide accumulations over the whole Pyrite Belt and from this will emerge estimates of the thermal budget necessary to generate the deposits. Detrital-zircon age spectra have been determined for sedimentary rocks from the Delamerian orogen, southern Australia. In Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks, patterns progressively change from Mesoproterozoic- to Neoproterozoic-dominated detritus and there are few zircons that are close to the depositional age. The base of the Cambrian Kanmantoo Group marks an abrupt change in provenance to detrital patterns dominated by Ross and Delamerian (600-500 Ma) and Grenvillean ages (1200-1000 Ma). These patterns are strikingly similar to those obtained from Lachlan fold belt sedimentary rocks, indicating that the sedimentation recorded in the Kanmantoo Group marks a change from deposition of sediments derived from the Australian cratons to those representative of the early Paleozoic Gondwana mudpile. If sedimentary rocks with zircon-provenance characteristics such as those of the Kanmantoo rocks extend under elements of the Lachlan fold belt, they would provide suitable protoliths for the S-type granites of southeastern Australia.
