The use of mechanical circulatory support to maintain appropriate hemodynamics in high risk percutaneous coronary intervention cases is a new frontier. Treatment of cases that were once considered prohibitive may now be possible. Due to a paucity of data, guidelines offer no guidance about the use of mechanical circulatory support in such cases. This case, the first documented case of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of a vein graft supplying the entire coronary circulation, adds to the medical literature demonstrating a likely benefit in the use of mechanical support during high risk PCI in patients without shock. To assess the impact of S fertilization on bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) quality and Cu metabolism in cattle, two studies were conducted during the summer grazing season (1999 and 2000). Pasture replicates (16.2 ha; n = 2/treatment) received the same fertilizer treatment in each growing season, consisting of 1) 67 kg N/ha from ammonium sulfate (AS), 2) 67 kg N/ha from ammonium nitrate (AN), and 3) control (no fertilizer; C). Forage sampling was conducted at 28-d intervals following fertilization by the collection of whole plants (four samples/pasture) in randomly distributed 1-m2 grazing exclusion cages and analyzed for CP, in vitro organic matter digestibility, S, P, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Fe, Al, Mn, Cu, and Zn. To determine the effect of fertilizer treatment on liver trace mineral concentrations in grazing cattle, random liver tissue samples were collected (n = 12; four/treatment) at the start and end of the study period in 2000. Ammonium sulfate fertilization increased (P < 0.001) forage S concentration in both years. Plant tissue N concentrations were increased by N fertilization, regardless of source, in 2000, but not in 1999. Cows grazing AS pastures had lower (P < 0.05) liver Cu concentrations at the end of the study period in 2000 compared to AN and C. In Exp. 2, 37 Cu-deficient heifers grazing AS fertilized pastures were obtained from the same location and allocated to one of two treatments, consisting of supplements providing 123 mg/d of either inorganic (Cu sulfate; n = 12) or organic (Availa-Cu; n = 15) Cu. Treatments were delivered for 83 d. Liver Cu increased over time in all heifers regardless of treatment; however, heifers supplemented with Availa-Cu tended (P = 0.09) to have higher mean liver Cu concentrations than those receiving Cu sulfate. The results of these studies indicate that AS fertilization of bahiagrass increases forage S concentrations. When provided free-choice access to a complete salt-based trace mineral supplement, cows grazing AS-fertilized pastures had lower liver Cu concentrations than cows grazing pastures fertilized with AN; upon removal from high-S pastures, cattle were able to respond to Cu supplementation.

Postpartum and lactating crossbred cows containing a percentage of Bos indicus breeding at three locations were studied to determine the efficacy of GnRH + PGF2alpha combinations for synchronization of estrus and(or) ovulation. Cows were equally distributed to each of three treatments by body condition score at the start of the experiment (d 0). All cows received 100 microg of GnRH on d 0 and 25 mg of PGF2alpha 7 d later. The three insemination protocols included 1) AI 12 h after exhibiting estrus during d 7 to 12 of the experiment (Select-Synch; n = 197); 2) timed-AI + 100 microg of GnRH on d 9 of the experiment (CO-Synch; n = 193); 3) AI 12 h after exhibiting estrus during d 7 to 10 of the experiment. Cows not exhibiting estrus by d 10 were timed-AI and injected with 100 microg of GnRH on d 10 of the experiment (Hybrid-Synch; n = 200). The percentage of cows exhibiting estrus during d 7 to 12 of the experiment was lower (P < 0.05) for CO-Synch (17.6%) cows than for Select-Synch or Hybrid-Synch (45.2 and 33.0%, respectively) cows, which did not differ (P > 0.05). For the Select-Synch and Hybrid-Synch cows that exhibited estrus during d 7 to 10 of the experiment and were artificially inseminated, conception rates were similar across treatments (50.5%). Pregnancy rates were greater (P < 0.01) for CO-Synch and Hybrid-Synch (31.0 and 35.5%, respectively) cows than for Select-Synch (20.8%) cows. A greater (P < 0.01) percentage of cycling cows became pregnant (34.5%) than noncycling cows (25.9%) across all treatments. The CO-Synch and Hybrid-Synch synchronization protocols resulted in greater pregnancy rates compared with the Select-Synch protocol in postpartum and lactating crossbred cows containing a percentage of Bos indicus breeding.

A study was conducted to determine whether presence of the calf during suckling inhibition influences the response to estrus synchronization in beef cows. Angus or Hereford cows (n=89) were administered Syncro-Mate-B (SMB), which consisted of a 6-mg norgestomet ear implant (in situ 9 d) in conjunction with 5 mg of estradiol valerate and 3 mg (im) of norgestomet. Cows were allotted by breed, body condition, stage of the estrous cycle, parity and date of parturition to 1 of 3 treatments: 48-h calf removal; ad libitum suckling; or inhibition of suckling with a nose tag for 48 h. Calves were weighed at time of SMB implant removal, 48 h later and at weaning. Cows were mated via AI approximately 12 h after detection of estrus during a 30-d period after implant removal followed by a natural service period of 35 d. At 48 h after implant removal, calf removal and nose tag calves had lost an average of 3.6 and 0.9 kg, respectively, while the suckled calves gained 1.8 kg (P < 0.01). Mean calf weight at weaning did not differ among treatments. Synchronized estrous response (within 5 d of implant removal) was not different among treatments. Pregnancy rate for cows exhibiting a synchronized estrus (5 d AI) for calf removal, nose tag and suckled cows was 76, 48 and 48%, respectively (P>0.10). Treatment did not affect the 30-d AI or overall 65-d pregnancy rate. In this study, there were no differences observed in the percentage of synchronized or pregnant cows following suckling inhibition by either a nose tag or calf removal. Transient reductions of calf body weight during the 48-h calf removal period did occur in both the nose tag and calf removal groups.

In an experiment with a 2x2 factorial arrangement of treatments, 32 virgin Angus heifers were used to study effects of tall fescue endophyte Acremonium coenophialum and energy supplementation on reproductive performance. Treatments were feeding of endophyte-free (EF) or endophyte-infected (EI) tall fescue without (0%) and with energy supplementation at one percent group mean body weight (1%). Blood samples were collected at 28-day intervals for prolactin (PRL). Starting 21 days before the breeding season, blood was also collected weekly for progesterone (P(4)) and PRL. After 99 days of grazing, heifers received Syncro-Mate-B (SMB) and were then artificially inseminated over a 30-day period. Heifers on EI-0% had a lower (P<0.05) average final body weight. Highest average daily gain was observed in heifers fed EF-1% (0.98 kg/day), whereas, heifers fed EI-0% had lowest average daily gain (0.53 kg/day; P<0.05). Endophyte-infected fescue depressed serum PRL concentrations (171 and 143 ng/ml vs 70 and 85 ng/ml; EF-0% and EF-1% vs EI-0% and EI-1%, respectively; P<0.05). No differences were observed among treatments in luteal activity before or after SMB, in pregnancy rates after a synchronized estrus or in overall pregnancy rates during the 30-day breeding season. Endophyte-infected fescue decreased average daily gain and depressed serum concentrations of prolactin, but had no effect on reproductive performance as measured in this study.

In an experiment replicated over 2 yr, 149 suckled beef cows were administered Syncro-Mate-B (SMB), a 6-mg Norgestomet (NOR) ear implant (in situ 9 d) in conjunction with an i.m. injection of 5 mg of estradiol valerate (EV), and either 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, 2 d after estrus. All cows were artificially inseminated at 48 h (timed insemination; TI) after implant removal (IR) and cows were reinseminated at any estrus subsequent to 24 h of TI through 30 d. Blood samples collected before treatment, every 3 d through IR, and at TI were assayed for progesterone (P4). At TI, 44, 39, and 12% of cows treated with 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, respectively, had serum concentrations of P4 greater than 1 ng/mL (3.0 and 4.5 mg vs 6.0 mg, P less than .01). Fifty-eight, 63, and 84% of cows treated with 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, respectively, exhibited a synchronized (within 5 d of IR) estrus (3.0 and 4.5 mg vs 6.0 mg, P less than .05). Pregnancy rates for the 5-d synchronized period were 38, 45, and 66% for cows treated with 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, respectively (3.0 and 4.5 mg vs 6.0 mg, P less than .05). First-service pregnancy rates were 66, 71, and 79% for cows treated with 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 mg of NOR, respectively (P greater than .10).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
