This symposium discusses future trends in innovation theory and practice as applied in the healthcare sector. It presents scholars dedicated to addressing the complexities of modern healthcare an opportunity to identify and scope out interdisciplinary research in healthcare innovation. The panel discussion focuses on three aspects reflective of the innovation process– development, diffusion, and evaluation. In this paper a firm-level contingency model of open innovation is developed and tested. The proposed model contributes to explaining the substantial disparities in open innovation payoff that were found to exist between firms. For this purpose, the role played by firms' innovation management practices is examined. Drawing on longitudinal, cross-sectoral data from 1,170 German firms, econometric analyses reveal that returns from open innovation are greatest when firms employ a dedicated incentive system for innovation, maintain their own research capacity and advocate strong crossfunctional collaboration. Striving for technology leadership, in contrast, was not found to have any notable effect on firms' payoff from open innovation. Decision-makers are thus well advised not to take positive returns from open innovation for granted. Rather, they need to achieve excellence in key innovation management practices, if their organisation is to fully harness the potential value of openness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores how the social identity of organizational groups influences knowledge transfer with other groups of the same organization. Two medium-sized hospitals serve as research context to investigate how knowledge recipients' social identity may have diverging effects on their willingness to utilize knowledge from other departments. This paper employs a mixed-methods approach with three months of extensive participant observation and survey data from 176 physicians and nurses, to identify social categorization and resulting intergroup bias as missing links in the identity-knowledge transfer puzzle. Ordinary least squares path analysis reveals a twofold serial mediation from social categorization to knowledge utilization: negatively connotated social categorization processes provoke biases between groups. Intergroup bias in turn influences how knowledge recipients perceive and interpret knowledge from other organizational groups. These biased knowledge evaluations translate to knowledge utilization. This study explores the evolution of translational research in the context of biomedical sciences in England. Using both qualitative and quantitative longitudinal data from English Biomedical Research Centers, we probed the institutional and organizational arrangements intended to foster the translation of basic and clinical research ideas into the development of health treatments and products to benefit patients. The evidence of these cases, drawn on data gathered from 52 in-depth interviews, and observations and on-site visits conducted over a five-year period (2008-2012), highlights how these Centers have been able to influence scientists' research agenda toward translational research by both rearranging and honoring scientific commitments. We outline these two specific mechanisms and theoretically elaborate on the purposive ambivalence created, which has softened the potential conflict that the juxtaposition of normal disciplinary research and translational research could have created. Firms pursuing an open innovation strategy have increasingly turned to individuals as sources of new ideas through the use of online communities or innovation contests, but firms often struggle to sustain the participation of participants. We conducted fieldwork at two firms that have successfully run community-based innovation contests for many years --Chicago-based T-Shirt firm Threadless and Phoenix-based automotive firm Local Motors-- drawing on over ninety interviews, six months of on-site observation, and archival data. Our inductive results demonstrate how these firms turn activities that have been traditionally regarded as work into a recreational activity. We describe the design of innovation contests that attract people with intrinsic disposition and then elicit their intrinsic motivation to participate. Traditional work in the Sociology of the Professions has laid the foundation of our understanding of the characteristics, and modalities, of professional knowledge across classic and established forms of professionalism. However, little empirical research has been done on the knowledge bases and dynamics across hybrid professional groups. Drawing on data gathered from 78 in-depth interviews and one-year of observations of four cross-occupational teams, two of them primarily composed of so-called classic professionals and two of hybrid professionals, I present a comparative study on present-day professionalism in the public sector. The findings highlight the existence of two very different ecologies of (inter) professional knowledge within established and hybrid forms of professionalism. For established forms, knowledge is more substantive and disciplinary based, whereas for hybrid forms it is general and situated, and characterized by a syncretic use of different disciplines, theories, and information.
