Campbell and Jamieson and Medhurst's foundational works on presidential farewell addresses assert that the form creates a sense of continuity, progressive perfection, and pedagogical affirmation and adapts to personal and situational exigencies to define a personal and administrative legacy for the outgoing president, as evidenced by the oft‐celebrated addresses of Washington and Eisenhower. However, at times these constraints are difficult to manage, particularly in the case of incumbents who were soundly denied a second term because of questionable administrative choices. In such cases, rhetors often turn to generic hybrids, combining forms and functions of different addresses to attend to complicated exigencies and audiences. The cases considered here infused the farewell's form with apologia, a speech of self‐defense, resulting in an inward‐focused address that failed to resolve important legacies. Examining the farewell addresses of three of the biggest electoral losers in history provides insight into the impacts these choices have on presidential legacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is my final Editorial, as I'm retiring as Editor in Chief after 15 years, covering 90 issues and editorials, handing over to Dan Nunan (Editor in Chief) and Yuksel Ekinsi (Editor) from the University of Portsmouth. Also, see the Viewpoint in this issue where the authors (one being my successor) identify the vitally important role played by an archive in our sector. The authors' research is focused in China, exploring the different attitudes of those born in the 1980s, exposed to an influx of foreign products when Chinese products were often of inferior quality, to those born in the 1990s when domestic products had become competitive with imported goods. The authors conclude that macro and micro country images matter for the symbolic product, whereas only the micro country image matters for the functional product. [Extracted from the article]

In this study we examined a case where twelve participants conducted farewell ceremonies for their deceased relatives. Taking a qualitative approach, we used interviews and questionnaires to focus on life stories that involve grieving. Specifically, we asked about experiences of the grief process as related to choice of music. Our results indicate that the role of music in farewell rituals is important for the grieving process in several ways. Firstly, music was associated with positive memories of the loved one and gave rise to experiences of recognition. Secondly, music facilitated active participation in the grieving process through choosing farewell music together with a relative. Thirdly, selecting music for the funeral in advance, together with their loved ones, was also experienced as hopeful, comforting and consoling before, during and after the bereavement. The article discusses greetings and farewells of a typical conversation in two Bantu languages: Swahili and Zulu. The conversation usually comprises the greeting followed by the enquiry about each other’s well-being, the actual conversation, and then the parting farewell. The article outlines the importance of nonverbal, sociolinguistic, and situational factors of the salutation. The objectives of the paper are to explore the feasibility of considering the salutation in Bantu languages as being uniform, to determine some common trends in the salutation, and to discuss the aspects that may have an impact on the form of the salutation, in languages in general and in Swahili and Zulu in particular.

Indeed, the importance of recognizing the interconnectedness of both responses and failures in the COVID-19 pandemic to wider social and ethical issues has never been greater. Our other contributions in the Perspectives section focus on particular aspects of COVID-19, and in doing so they bring us back full circle to the starting point of this editorial: the pandemic has writ large stubborn social injustices and has made them worse. Unitary evolution makes pure state on one Cauchy surface evolve to pure state on another Cauchy surface. Outgoing Hawking radiation is the only subsystem on the late Cauchy surface. The requirement that Hawking radiation should be pure amounts to requiring purity of the subsystem when the total system is pure. We will see that this requirement will lead to firewall even in flat spacetime, and thus is invalid. Information is either stored in the entanglement between field modes inside black hole and the outgoing modes or stored in correlation between geometry and Hawking radiation when singularity is resolved by quantum gravity effects. We will give a simple argument that even in semi-classical regime, information is (at least partly) stored in correlation between geometry and Hawking radiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structure, transport, and seasonal variability of the West Greenland boundary current system near Cape Farewell are investigated using a high-resolution mooring array deployed from 2014 to 2018. The boundary current system is comprised of three components: the West Greenland Coastal Current, which advects cold and fresh Upper Polar Water (UPW); the West Greenland Current, which transports warm and salty Irminger Water (IW) along the upper slope and UPW at the surface; and the Deep Western Boundary Current, which advects dense overflow waters. Labrador Sea Water (LSW) is prevalent at the seaward side of the array within an offshore recirculation gyre and at the base of the West Greenland Current. The 4-yr mean transport of the full boundary current system is 31.167.4 Sv (1 Sv[106m³ s-1), with no clear seasonal signal. However, the individual water mass components exhibit seasonal cycles in hydrographic properties and transport. LSW penetrates the boundary current locally, through entrainment/mixing from the adjacent recirculation gyre, and also enters the current upstream in the Irminger Sea. IW is modified through air-sea interaction during winter along the length of its trajectory around the Irminger Sea, which converts some of the water to LSW. This, together with the seasonal increase in LSW entering the current, results in an anticorrelation in transport between these two water masses. The seasonality in UPW transport can be explained by remote wind forcing and subsequent adjustment via coastal trapped waves. El presente artículo describe una tipología de saludos y despedidas del español de México basada en datos observacionales de hablantes jóvenes del municipio de Metepec. El artículo también hace un contraste de datos observacionales y datos intuitivos referentes a los formatos de saludos y despedidas. En cuanto a la tipología, los saludos y las despedidas reportados se categorizan en tres y cuatro tipos respectivamente (saludos: hola, vocativos, la construcción interrogativa ¿Qué ...?; despedidas: adiós, bye, imperativo del verbo cuidar y despedidas temporales), y cada categoría cuenta con características y subcategorías particulares. La comparación entre los datos observacionales y los intuitivos en general indica que los datos observacionales no coinciden con los datos intuitivos; sin embargo, al ahondar en su contraste se identifican algunas similitudes particulares. This paper presents a typology of greetings and farewells in Mexican Spanish. In particular, the typology is based on observational data of greetings and farewells produced by young speakers in the city of Metepec. The typology of greetings and farewells is categorized into three and four types, respectively (greetings: hola, use of vocative, and the interrogative construction ¿Qué...?; farewells: adiós, bye, imperative of the verb cuidar ‐'take care', and temporal farewells). Each category has its own characteristics and subcategories. In general, the contrast between observations and intuitions indicates that the observational data does not coincide with the intuitive data. OVERVIEW: The last 20 years mark a period of transformation from a traditional model of displaying archaeology to a more immersive model supported by digital and virtual media. The traditional model has generally used glass cases accompanied by extensive texts to inform visitors, whereas the immersive model employs digital media, tablets, virtual reality, and augmented reality to attract and engage a wide audience. In light of the recent enthusiasm for the latter, however, one must ask whether such immersive exhibitions are merely superficial means to make public institutions more attractive without having a meaningful impact on audience engagement. Polish archaeological museums provide interesting sites through which to explore this predicament. Here, digital upgrades are generously financed by national funds, so the traditional model of the archaeological museum in Poland is currently almost absent. In this short review, I aim to discuss one of the most interesting examples of temporary digital archaeological exhibitions organized between 2014 and 2019 in the Polish capital of Warsaw. I investigate its potential to engage audiences, ultimately concluding that it managed to create an interesting counterweight to traditional displays and respond to the drawbacks of new digital exhibitions through novel aesthetics and alternative archaeological storytelling. Aside from the health, social, economic, and financial damages brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most painful aspects of this phenomenon is the death of patients who succumbed to the coronavirus disease without their loved ones having to at least view their dead bodies and accord them the usual funeral and burial rites as dictated by tradition, culture, and religion. I first outline the guidelines that comprise dignified management of dead bodies from international organizations, and the Philippine legal mandates regarding the matter. I then argue that there is incongruence between the legal mandates and real events regarding the dignified management of dead bodies of persons who died from COVID-19 in the country as evidenced by some anecdotal accounts. As a subject and not an object, dead bodies of human beings have inherent worth and value that should be respected; their loved ones should not be deprived to have the last view and say goodbye to COVID-19 victims' dead bodies. Finally, I offer ways to improve the management of dead bodies in the country to ensure dignified death of COVID- 19 victims and offer loved ones the opportunity for a dignified send-off, and pave way for better responses to future related crises. The violent death of Landauer in May 1919 at the end of the Räterepublik of Munich left several of his best friends with a terrible feeling: a sense of tension between the unique hopes incarnated by Landauer and the spiritual and political void his passing left behind. This article is an attempt to capture the tragic shift from a living revolutionary who projected his unique anarchist views onto the failed Munich Revolution to the efforts of a group of close friends who searched to save their dear Landauer from the infamy of failure, making of his months in Munich and his death an important amendment to his spiritual and political legacy. It is with great sadness that we have learned about the passing of Professor David Yaffe (19292020, Israel). Yehi Zichro Baruch - May his memory be a blessing. David was a man of family, science and nature. A native of Israel, David grew up in the historic years that preceded the birth of the State of Israel. He was a member of the group that established Kibbutz Revivim in the Negev desert, and in 1948 participated in Israel’s War of Independence. David and Ruth eventually joined Kibbutz Givat Brenner by Rehovot, permitting David to be both a kibbutz member and a life-long researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science, where David received his PhD in 1959. David returned to the Institute after his postdoc at Stanford. Here, after several years of researching a number of tissues as models for studying the process of differentiation, David entered the myogenesis field and stayed with it to his last day. With his dedication to the field of myogenesis and his commitment to furthering the understanding of the People and the Land of Israel throughout the international scientific community, David organized the first ever myogenesis meeting that took place in Shoresh, Israel in 1975. This was followed by the 1980 myogenesis meeting at the same place and many more outstanding meetings, all of which brought together myogenesis, nature and scenery. Herein, through the preparation and publication of this current manuscript, we are meeting once again at a “David Yaffe myogenesis meeting". Some of us have been members of the Yaffe lab, some of us have known David as his national and international colleagues in the myology field. One of our contributors has also known (and communicates here) about David Yaffe’s earlier years as a kibbutznick in the Negev. Our collective reflections are a tribute to Professor David Yaffe. We are fortunate that the European Journal of Translational Myology has provided us with tremendous input and a platform for holding this 2020 distance meeting "Farwell to Professor David Yaffe - A Pillar of the Myogenesis Field".
