Abstract

This survey study focuses on public opinion regarding the use of algorithmic decision-making in government sectors, specifically in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Algorithms are becoming increasingly prevalent in various public domains, including both routine and high-stakes government functions. Despite their growing use, public sentiment remains divided, with concerns about privacy and accuracy juxtaposed against perceptions of fairness when compared to human decision-making. In April 2021, a survey was conducted among nearly 1,500 county residents to explore their awareness, experiences, and attitudes towards these algorithms. The study highlights diverse viewpoints influenced by factors such as race, age, education, gender, income, and urban or suburban living. The results demonstrate the complexity of public sentiment towards algorithmic governance and emphasize the need for a nuanced understanding and approach in policy and implementation.

2. Middle School Students' Experiences with Cyberbullying and Perspectives toward Prevention and Bystander Intervention in Schools

Abstract

Cyberbullying is a growing problem for middle school students. Bystander interventions that train witnesses to positively intervene can prevent cyberbullying. Through six focus groups, we explored forty-six middle school students' experiences with cyberbullying and opportunities for school-based prevention programs to encourage positive bystander behavior. Focus groups were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using content analysis. Students viewed cyberbullying as an important problem with significant consequences. They noted hesitancy in reporting to parents and school personnel and felt more comfortable discussing cyberbullying with a near-peer (e.g. older sibling or friend). Students desired combining school-based and online programming with near-peer mentorship. This study suggests need for targeted prevention programs that center middle school students' lived experiences with cyberbullying and their preferences for learning and utilizing positive bystander strategies.

5. Motivating Experts to Contribute to Digital Public Goods: A Personalized Field Experiment on Wikipedia.

Abstract

We conducted a large-scale personalized field experiment to examine how match quality, recognition, and social impact influence domain experts' contributions to Wikipedia. Forty-five percent of the experts expressed willingness to contribute in the baseline condition, whereas 51% (a 13% increase over the baseline) expressed interest when they received a signal that an article matched their expertise. However, none of the treatments had a significant effect on actual contributions. Instead experts contributed longer and better comments when the actual match between a recommended Wikipedia article and an expert's expertise, measured by cosine similarity, was higher, when they had higher reputation, and when the original article was longer. These findings suggest that match quality between volunteers and tasks is critically important in encouraging contributions to digital public goods and likely to volunteering in general. Abstract

With over 300 language communities, Wikipedia offers a multilingual environment for collective reporting of events worldwide. However, most research on documenting events has focused on English Wikipedia. Our work explores the extent of global coverage of event articles in the English Wikipedia and Wikipedia communities associated with three of the most spoken languages globally: Arabic, Chinese and Spanish. We also compare the process of collaboratively writing event articles across these communities. Our results provide evidence that while there is an indication of self-focus bias, there is also strong evidence of a global representation of events across different Wikipedia communities. Moreover, we observe that while limited resources in smaller Wikipedia communities have different collaboration patterns, their efforts lead to similar levels of content quality after a week. 38. A Study of Social Navigation Support under Different Situational and Personal Factors

Abstract

"Social Navigation" for the Web has been created as a response to the problem of disorientation in information space. It helps by visualizing traces of behavior of other users and adding social affordance to the information space. Despite the popularity of social navigation ideas, very few studies of social navigation systems can be found in the research literature. In this dissertation, I designed and carried out an experiment to explore the effect of several factors on social navigation support (SNS). The purpose of the experiment was to identify situations under which social navigation is most useful and to investigate the effect of personal factors, e.g., interpersonal trust, and gender on the likelihood of following social navigation cues. To gain a deeper insight into the effect of SNS on users' information seeking behavior, traditional evaluation methodologies were supplemented with eye tracking. The results of the study show that social navigation cues affect subjects' search behavior; specifically, while under time pressure subjects were more likely to use SNS. SNS was successful in guiding them to relevant documents and allowed them to achieve higher search performance. Reading abilities and interpersonal trust had a reliable effect on the SNS-following behavior and on subjects' subjective opinion about SNS.
