Maternal Binge Eating Disorder (BED) has been suggested to be associated with poor parent-infant interactions during feeding and with children’s emotional and behavioral problems during infancy (Blisset & Haycraft, 2011). The role of fathers has received increasing consideration in recent years, yet the research has not focused on interactional patterns between fathers with BED and their children. The present study aimed to longitudinally investigate the influence of BED diagnosis, in one or both parents, on parent-infant feeding interactions and on children’s emotional-behavioral functioning. 612 subjects (408 parents; 204 children), recruited in mental health services and pre-schools in Central Italy, were divided into four groups: Group 1 included families with both parents diagnosed with BED, Group 2 and 3 included families with one parent diagnosed with BED, Group 0 was a healthy control. The assessment took place at T1 (18 months of age of children) and T2 (36 months of age of children): feeding interactions were assessed through the Scale for the Assessment of Feeding Interactions (SVIA) while child emotional-behavioral functioning was evaluated with the Child Behavior Check-List (CBCL). When compared to healthy controls, the groups with one or both parents diagnosed with BED showed higher scores on the SVIA and on the CBCL internalizing and externalizing scales, indicating poorer adult-child feeding interactions and higher emotional-behavioral difficulties. A direct influence of parental psychiatric diagnosis on the quality of mother-infant and father-infant interactions was also found, both at T1 and T2. Moreover, dyadic feeding interactions mediated the influence of parental diagnosis on children’s psychological functioning. The presence of BED diagnosis in one or both parents seems to influence the severity of maladaptive parent-infant exchanges during feeding and offspring’s emotional-behavioral problems over time, consequently affecting different areas of children’s psychological functioning. This is the first study to demonstrate the specific effects of maternal and paternal BED on infant development. These results could inform prevention and intervention programs in families with one or both parents diagnosed with BED.

- Abstract
"The current study used data from the first phase of the NICHD-SECCYD study, which was collected from birth to age three. These data were collected from 1991 to 1995. The current study utilized a time-lagged, multilevel model to examine the association between increases in maternal relative earnings and subsequent increases in father responsibility for routine childcare tasks over time. Both maternal emotional intimacy and parenting stress were examined as potential moderating effects. The sample included married and cohabitating families. The central constructs for this study were measured at the 6, 15, 24, and 36-month time points, with fathers reporting on their own responsibility for routine childcare tasks and with mothers reporting on their own and their husband's earnings, their perceptions of emotional intimacy, and their own parenting stress. Results indicated that maternal relative earnings were positively associated with subsequent father responsibility for routine childcare tasks. Although emotional intimacy did not moderate this association, the association between maternal relative earnings and father responsibility for routine childcare tasks was stronger as parenting stress decreased. These findings may have applied implications for intervention programs."--Abstract from author supplied metadata

The present study compared the psychosocial functioning of children whose fathers primarily abused illicit drugs other than alcohol (n = 51 ) to children from a demographically matched sample of families whose fathers abused alcohol (n = 51). Children with drug-abusing (DA) fathers exhibited significantly more negative child behaviors on a standardized child-rating scale than did children from homes with alcohol-abusing fathers. In addition, a significantly greater proportion of children with DA fathers met clinical cutoffs indicative of psychosocial impairment (n = 23: 45%) than did children whose fathers abused alcohol (n = 5; 10%). Mediation analyses indicated that severity of drug, legal, medical, employment, and family problems partially mediated the relationship between type of family (i.e., families with fathers who had an alcohol problem versus families with fathers who had a drug problem) and children's psychosocial adjustment. - Abstract
This qualitative, collective case study explored how men perceive fears of childbirth and level of preparedness to become fathers. An additional purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of expectant and new fathers with regard to how the Boot Camp for New Dads (BCND) program helped them to alleviate pregnancy fears and develop preparedness to become a parent. Data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews and focus groups conducted after the participants completed a three-hour boot camp for the BCND program. Additionally, participants completed the Kessler-6, a short questionnaire designed to glean their perspectives of fears after the childbirth. The data analysis revealed five major themes. Four of the themes were in regard to expectant father pregnancy fears, and the other theme was related to expectant fathers' perceptions of how the BCND program helped them cope with fears. After coding and categorical aggregation were completed, the following three pregnancy fear themes were made clear: Am I prepared for fatherhood?, Will mom and baby be in good health?, I am not alone Will I ever get my wife back? The perceived value of the Boot Camp for New Dads program could be summarized by the following theme: If the veteran fathers can do it, so can I.

- Abstract
"This qualitative study examines the experiences and perceptions of fathers of young children with hearing loss. The investigation describes fathers' experiences with the identification of hearing loss, diagnosis of hearing loss, receipt of early intervention services, and transition to as well as experiences within school services. Using phenomenological methods, a total of 18 interviews were conducted with six fathers of children with hearing loss. All participants were married middle class fathers of multiple children with at least one child who had hearing loss who utilized assistive listening technology to develop spoken language as their primary form of communication. The major research question that guided the research was how do fathers of young children with hearing loss experience fatherhood? Findings reveal that fathers of children with hearing loss utilize the role model of their own father as they conceptualize their own fatherhood identity. They seek to be fathers who are involved with their children in similar ways to those of their own fathers and to improve on their fathers' involvement where possible. Fathers prioritize their involvement in their children's lives and strive to be an active co-parent. Fathers desire to provide their children with hearing loss with opportunities to have a successful future. The fathers of children with hearing loss included in this study viewed the use of cochlear implants and hearing aids to access and develop spoken language as their children's primary mode of communication as an opportunity for their children to have successful futures. Given their children's perceived successful outcomes in communicating through spoken language, fathers depicted the concept of wellness -in-the -foreground perspective of their children, thus viewing them from a non-deficit perspective. Fathers reflected that their concept of disability had shifted over time to become less deficit based to that of highlighting individual accomplishments in meeting challenges posed by a disability."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

- Abstract
The aim with this study was to examine how social service statement in 3 § social-judgements LVU (Swedish care of young persons act) produce ideas about gender. We have taken an interest in the production of both boys and girls and their mothers and fathers because there are clear differences in the description of these. From a historical perspective, the differences between gender in social assessments occurred despite the fact that discrimination is prohibited by law and despite the fact that social service shall work on the basis of an gender equality perspective. In the analysis and interpretation of the rulings we have been inspired by a critical discourse analysis. 30 social-judgements have been analyzed where of 15 concerns girls and 15 involve boys. In our study obvious differences between the sexes appear. Gender stereotypical patterns emerged in several cases, for example social service only mentioned sexuality and adolescent self-harm of girls but in non of the boys cases. As regards the mothers are often criticised and clearly described in the judgments while fathers rarely occur., Studiens syfte har varit att undersöka om socialtjänstens yttranden i 3 § LVU-domar (Lagen om vård av unga) producerar föreställningar om kön.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact the primary caregiving role had on men's perceptions of leisure. The Assessment of Leisure and Recreation Involvement (Ragheb, 2002) was used to examine men's leisure. Twenty-five stay-at-home dad groups were solicited via e-mail; 81 men submitted usable responses to an online survey. Respondents considered themselves the primary caregiver for children in the household and at least one child was younger than 12. Descriptive data were collected about the experience of being a primary caregiving father, demographics, and how the caregiving role affects the men's perceptions of leisure. Caregiving fathers in the sample resembled the perceptions of many primary caregiving mothers. Perhaps the "caregiving" role, rather than gender, is a more distinct variable explaining perceptions of leisure by parents.

- Abstract
The literature revealed a neglect in the area of family leisure-time behavior. The problem under consideration in this investigation was leisure-time behavior among fathers with members of the immediate family. Forty five fathers were selected for this study. Fifteen fathers represented each of three social class positions as defined by the Hollingshead two-factor index of education and occupation. All fathers had to be presently married and living at the same residence with spouse and children. There had to be two or three children in the family, and they had to be within the age range of six to thirteen. Finally, all fathers were of the caucasian race. The findings supported the hypotheses relative to social class position and time and types variations. With one exception, there was a positive association between social class position and every aspect of father family leisure time when both time and types variations were considered. There was no association between social class position and the amount of leisure time a husband and wife spent together. The findings did not support the hypotheses relative to the association between familism and time and types variation of family leisure time. In most instances there was an inverse association between familism and time variation and between familism and types variation. Finally, there was an inverse association between social class position and familism. Although the results of this investigation cannot be applied to a general population due to the methodological limitations, the findings do show that social class position does predict the behavior of fathers relative to leisure-time use with family members. The results also show that familism as defined and measured for this investigation is limited in its applicability. It is suggested that future research include a probability sampling procedure so that inference can be drawn applicable to a larger population, and mothers as well as fathers be included in the investigation.

29. Gender, division of unpaid family work and psychological distress in dual-earner families.

- Abstract
Introduction: Epidemiological studies have only recently begun to address the consequences of unpaid family work (ie., housework and child rearing) for mental health. Although research is suggestive of an association between the division of unpaid family work and psychological health, especially for women, additional research is required to clarify the conditions under which such a relationship holds. The purpose of the present study was to examine more nuanced relationships between the division of family work and psychological distress by disaggregating the family work construct according to type (housework/child rearing), control over scheduling, and evaluations of fairness., Methods: Analysis of data obtained from a cross-sectional telephone survey conducted in a Canadian city. Analyses were based on 293 employed parents (182 mothers and 111 fathers), with at least one preschool child, living in dual-earner households. Several multiple linear regression models were estimated with psychological distress as the outcome, adjusting for confounders., Results: For mothers, more perceived time spent in child rearing (particularly primary child care) and high-schedule-control housework tasks (e.g. yard work) relative to one's partner, were associated with greater distress. For fathers, perceived unfairness in the division of housework and child rearing were associated with greater distress., Conclusion: Although methodological limitations temper firm conclusions, these results suggest that the gendered nature of household work has implications for the psychological well-being of both mothers and fathers of preschool children in dual-earner households. However, more longitudinal research and the development of theoretically-informed measures of family work are needed to advance the field.
