KM3NeT-Italia is an INFN project supported with Italian PON fundings for building the core of the Italian node of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope. The detector, made of 700 10′′ Optical Modules (OMs) lodged along 8 vertical structures called towers, will be deployed starting from fall 2015 at the KM3NeT-Italy site, about 80 km off Capo Passero, Italy, 3500 m deep. The all data to shore approach is used to reduce the complexity of the submarine detector, demanding for an on-line trigger integrated in the data acquisition system running in the shore station, called TriDAS. Due to the large optical background in the sea from 40K decays and bioluminescence, the throughput from the underwater detector can range up to 30 Gbps. This puts strong constraints on the design and performances of the TriDAS and of the related network infrastructure. In this contribution the technology behind the implementation of the TriDAS infrastructure is reviewed, focusing on the relationship between the various components and their performances. The modular design of the TriDAS, which allows for its scalability up to a larger detector than the 8-tower configuration is also discussed.

Achieving a molecular-level understanding of interfacial (photo)electrochemical processes is essential in order to tailor novel and highly-performing catalytic systems. The corresponding recent development of in situ and operando tools has posed new challenges on experimental architectures. In this study, we use ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) to probe the solid/liquid electrified interface of a polycrystalline Pt sample in contact with an alkaline electrolyte during hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Using the “dip-and-pull” technique to probe the interface through a thin liquid layer generated on the sample surface, we observe that the electrolyte meniscus becomes unstable under sustained driving of an electrolyte-consuming reaction (such as water oxidation). The addition of an electrochemically inert supporting electrolyte mitigates this issue, maintaining a stable meniscus layer for prolonged reaction times. In contrast, for processes in which the electrolyte is replenished in the reaction pathway (i.e. water reduction in alkaline conditions), we find that the solid/liquid interface remains stable without addition of a secondary supporting electrolyte. The approach described in this work allows the extension of operando AP-XPS capabilities using the “dip-and-pull” method to a broader class of reactions consuming ionic species during complex interfacial faradaic processes.

The development of solar fuel generating materials would greatly benefit from a molecular level understanding of the semiconductor/electrolyte interface and changes in the interface induced by an applied potential and illumination by solar light. Ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy techniques with both soft and hard X-rays, AP-XPS and AP-HAXPES respectively, have the potential to markedly contribute to this understanding. In this paper we initially provide two examples of current challenges in solar fuels material development that AP-XPS and AP-HAXPES can directly address. This will be followed by a brief description of the distinguishing and complementary characteristics of soft and hard X-ray AP-XPS and AP-HAXPES and best approaches to achieving monolayer sensitivity in solid/aqueous electrolyte studies. In particular we focus on the detection of surface adsorbed hydroxyl groups in the presence of aqueous hydroxide anions in the electrolyte, a common situation when investigating photoanodes for solar fuel generating applications. The paper concludes by providing an example of a combined AP-XPS and AP-HAXPES study of a semiconductor/aqueous electrolyte interface currently used in water splitting devices specifically the BiVO4/aqueous potassium phosphate electrolyte interface.

Ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) has contributed greatly to a wide range of research fields, including environmental science [1], catalysis [2], and electrochemistry [3], to name a few. The use of this technique at synchrotron facilities primarily focused on probing the solid/gas interface; however, it quickly advanced to the probing of liquid/vapor interfaces [4, 5] and solid/liquid interfaces through an X-ray-transparent window [6–8]. Most recently, combining APXPS with “Tender” X-rays (~2.5 keV to 8 keV) on beamline 9.3.1 at the Advanced Light Source in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (which can generate photoelectrons with much longer inelastic mean free paths) has enabled us to probe the solid/liquid interface without needing a window [9]. This innovation allows us to probe interfacial chemistries of electrochemically controlled solid/liquid interfaces undergoing charge transfer reactions [9]. These advancements have transitioned APXPS from a traditional surface science tool to an essential interface science technique.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical component of industrial processes such as electrowinning of metals and the chlor-alkali process. It also plays a central role in the development of a renewable energy field for generation a solar fuels by providing both the protons and electrons needed to generate fuels such as H2 or reduced hydrocarbons from CO2. To improve these processes, it is necessary to expand the fundamental understanding of catalytically active species at low overpotential, which will further the development of electrocatalysts with high activity and durability. In this context, performing experimental investigations of the electrocatalysts under realistic working regimes (i.e., under operando conditions) is of crucial importance. Here, we study a highly active quinary transition-metal-oxide-based OER electrocatalyst by means of operando ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy performed at the solid/liquid interface. We observe that the catalyst undergoes a clear chemical-structural evolution as a function of the applied potential with Ni, Fe, and Co oxyhydroxides comprising the active catalytic species. While CeO2 is redox inactive under catalytic conditions, its influence on the redox processes of the transition metals boosts the catalytic activity at low overpotentials, introducing an important design principle for the optimization of electrocatalysts and tailoring of high-performance materials. Understanding the interplay between surface chemistry, electronic structure, and reaction mechanism of the catalyst at the electrified solid/liquid interface will enable the design of more efficient materials systems for sustainable energy production. The substantial progress in operando characterization, particularly using synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopies, provides the unprecedented opportunity to uncover surface chemical and structural transformations under various (electro)chemical reaction environments. In this work, we study a polycrystalline platinum surface under oxygen evolution conditions in an alkaline electrolyte by means of ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy performed at the electrified solid/liquid interface. We elucidate previously inaccessible aspects of the surface chemistry and structure as a function of the applied potential, allowing us to propose a reaction mechanism for oxygen evolution on a platinum electrode in alkaline solutions.

Operando synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy in the tender X-ray energy range has been used to obtain information on the energy-band relations of semiconductor and metal-covered semiconductor surfaces while in direct contact with aqueous electrolytes under potentiostatic control. The system that was investigated consists of highly doped Si substrates that were conformally coated with ∼70 nm titania films produced by atomic-layer deposition. TiO2/electrolyte and Si/TiO2/Ni/electrolyte interfaces were then analyzed by synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy. The PES data allows for determination of the flat-band position and identification of potential regions in which Fermi level pinning, depletion, or accumulation occurred. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques were additionally used to investigate the properties of heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the oxygen-evolution reaction. Operando XAS including the pre-edge, edge and EXAFS regions allowed the development of a detailed picture of the catalysts under operating conditions, and elucidated the changes in the physical and electronic structure of the catalyst that accompanied increases in the applied potential. Specifically, XAS data, combined with DFT studies, indicated that the activity of the electrocatalyst correlated with the formation of Fe dopant sites in γ-NiOOH.

Substitutional doping of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with heteroatoms is a principal strategy to fine-tune the electronic structure of GNRs for future device applications. Here, we report the fabrication and nanoscale characterization of atomically precise N = 13 armchair GNRs featuring regioregular edge-doping with sulfur atoms (S-13-AGNRs) on a Au(111) surface. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and first-principle calculations reveal modification of the electronic structure of S-13-AGNRs when compared to undoped N = 13 AGNRs.

The electrical and spectroscopic properties of the TiO2/Ni protection layer system, which enables stabilization of otherwise corroding photoanodes, have been investigated in contact with electrolyte solutions by scanning-probe microscopy, electrochemistry and in-situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). Specifically, the energy-band relations of the p+-Si/ALD-TiO2/Ni interface have been determined for a selected range of Ni thicknesses. AP-XPS measurements using tender X-rays were performed in a three-electrode electrochemical arrangement under potentiostatic controlto obtain information from the semiconductor near-surface region, the electrochemical double layer (ECDL) and the electrolyte beyond the ECDL. The degree of conductivity depended on the chemical state of the Ni on the TiO2 surface. At low loadings of Ni, the Ni was present primarily as an oxide layer and the samples were not conductive, although the TiO2 XPS core levels nonetheless displayed behavior indicative of a metal-electrolyte junction. In contrast, as the Ni thickness increased, the Ni phase was primarily metallic and the electrochemical behavior became highly conductive, with the AP-XPS data indicative of a metal-electrolyte junction. Electrochemical and microtopographical methods have been employed to better define the nature of the TiO2/Ni electrodes and to contextualize the AP-XPS results.

The aim of this work is to highlight the correlation between treatment conditions, composition, and structure of reduced zinc oxide (ZnO:Zn) with optical and radioluminescence properties for the production of high yield scintillating powders. Purchased zinc oxide (ZnO) powders (≈0.35 ± 0.15 μm) were thermally reduced in Ar/H2 (3%) atmosphere at temperatures ranging between 600 (≈0.40 ± 0.17 μm) and 1000 °C (≈6.4 ± 1.6 μm), obtaining ZnO:Zn powders. The reduction degree, evaluated through energy dispersive spectroscopy, showed a linear increase from 0% up to 20% (800 °C sample), reaching a plateau condition at about 25% for the highest treatment temperatures (1000 °C sample). Structural analysis highlighted the existence of a threshold temperature, previously reported in the literature, around 800 °C, beyond which (i) the grain size remarkably increases, (ii) the shape changes from hexagonal to round-shaped, and (iii) the intensity of electron spin resonance (ESR)-active defects at g = 1.9596 decreases for a new resonance at g = 2.0105. Additionally, a substantial variation, from 5.63 ± 0.02 down to 5.2 ± 0.1 g/cm3, of the skeletal density and a slight contraction of the optical bandgap are observed. Unlike the structural properties, PL and x-ray radioluminescence showed a continuous increase of the green emission intensity, associated with ESR-active ionized oxygen vacancies and ESR non-active recombination centers, and of the PL defective lifetimes (33 ns < τfast < 88 ns, 395 ns < τslow < 930 ns).
