9. Q1D modeling of hydrodynamic instabilities in solid rocket motors.

Abstract

In this work pressure oscillations investigation within solid rocket motors are addressed with particular focus on hydrodynamic instabilities. A Q1D model, named AGAR, is applied to simulate the whole firing time of the laboratory scale SRM C1xb, designed to develop vortex-shedding flow instabilities. The comparison between numerical results and experimental data show good agreement in terms of pressure oscillations signature, especially regarding the flute-mode behavior, a typical and important feature of hydrodynamic instabilities. Such result ensures the model capability to cope with this kind of pressure oscillations source, allowing to investigate the phenomenon with a lighter and cost savings methodology than CFD simulations. Abstract

Combustion instability is a major threat to be dealt with during the design and development phase of new liquid rocket engines. If unpredicted, its onset easily yields to thermal or mechanical failure of the engine and of the mission as well. The present work focuses on the low-order modeling of combustion instability. In particular, a recently introduced response function formulation is reported and applied. Its novelty lies in the indirect link between acoustics and unsteady heat release, which passes through the modeling of the shear coaxial injector dynamics. Such injector is assumed to be capable of cyclically accumulating and releasing propellant vortexes where the mixing takes place. Such model is then applied to two different test-cases, namely one fed by gaseous propellant, i.e. the CVRC test-case, while the other by supercritical fluids, namely the BKD test-case. Results show how the CVRC instability features are well reproduced, while several model improvements are needed for the BKD.

Abstract

This paper has the aim to investigate the correlation between some ballistic geometrical parameters of a SRM and the calibration of AGAR Q1D model of the pressure oscillations. The correlation permits to share the same model calibration between SRMs of different scales prone to pressure during their steady state, improving the prediction capability of the model. The numerical reconstructions performed on two aft-finocyl SRMs, P80 the first stage of the European launch vehicle VEGA, and POD-Y the midscale demonstrator for the pressure oscillations of the possible future evolutions of P80 SRM, confirm the effectiveness of this approach and the goodness of the AGAR model, both numerical results being in very good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract

The generation of vorticity patterns, in simplified aft-finocyl geometries of interest, is investigated by means of 2D-axisymmetric ILES CFD simulations with a 2nd order TVD scheme. The development of vortical shear layer structures is observed along the propellant surface and across the finocyl region. These structures are found to induce sustained pressure oscillations as due to the coupling of vorticity and acoustic modes of the chamber. The qualitative and quantitative characterization of the pressure oscillations phenomenon, in terms of both amplitude and frequencies, is a challenging problem, indeed it results to be strongly affected by mesh level, order of accuracy an sub-grid model of ILES approach.
