2. A population evolution model and its applications to random networks

Abstract

A general population evolution model is considered. Any individual of the population is characterized by its score. Certain general conditions are assumed concerning the number of the individuals and their scores. Asymptotic theorems are obtained for the number of individuals having some fixed score. It is proved that the score distribution is scale free. The result is applied to obtain the weight distributions of the cliques in a random graph evolution model.

Abstract

Long-term videomicroscopy and computer-aided statistical analysis were used to determine some characteristic parameters of in vitro cell motility and proliferation in three established cell lines derived from human glioblastoma tumors. Migration and proliferation activities were compared among the three cell lines since these are two features of tumor cells that strongly influence the progression of cancer. The results on these dynamical parameters of cell locomotion were compared to pathological data obtained by traditional methods. The data indicate that the analysis of cell motility provides more specific information and is potentially useful in diagnosis., Comment: 16 pages incl. figures

Seven species of Microlepidoptera, Monopis neglecta Šumpich & Liška, 2011, Bucculatrix humiliella Herrich‐Schäffer, 1855, Leucoptera lathyrifoliella (Stainton, 1866), Blastobasis pannonica Šumpich & Liška, 2011, Coleophora adjectella E. M. Hering, 1937, Coleophora potentillae Elischa, 1885 and Ancylolomia tentaculella Hübner, 1796 are recorded as new to the fauna of Hungary. Specimens are deposited in the private collections of A. Schreurs (NL‐Kerkade), F. Buschmann (H‐Jászberény), J. Skyva (CZ‐ Praha), J. Šumpich (CZ‐Česká Bělá), J. Liška (CZ‐Praha) and National Museum Prague. 5. Scale-free property for degrees and weights in an N-interactions random graph model

Abstract

A general random graph evolution mechanism is defined. The evolution is based on the interactions of N vertices. Besides the interactions of the new vertex and the old ones, interactions among old vertices are also allowed. Moreover, both preferential attachment and uniform choice are possible. A vertex in the graph is characterized by its degree and its weight. The weight of a given vertex is the number of interactions of the vertex. The asymptotic behavior of the graph is studied. Scale-free properties both for the degrees and the weights are proved. It turns out that any exponent in (2, [infinity]) can be achieved. The proofs are based on discrete time martingale theory., 1. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of vedolizumab, an α4β7 integrin antibody, in Crohn's disease is unknown. METHODS: In an integrated study with separate induction and maintenance trials, we assessed intravenous vedolizumab therapy (300 mg) in adults with active Crohn's disease. In the induction trial, 368 patients were randomly assigned to receive vedolizumab or placebo at weeks 0 and 2 (cohort 1), and 747 patients received open-label vedolizumab at weeks 0 and 2 (cohort 2); disease status was assessed at week 6. In the maintenance trial, 461 patients who had had a response to vedolizumab were randomly assigned to receive placebo or vedolizumab every 8 or 4 weeks until week 52. RESULTS: At week 6, a total of 14.5% of the patients in cohort 1 who received vedolizumab and 6.8% who received placebo were in clinical remission (i.e., had a score on the Crohn's Disease Activity Index [CDAI] of ≤150, with scores ranging from 0 to approximately 600 and higher scores indicating greater disease activity) (P=0.02); a total of 31.4% and 25.7% of the patients, respectively, had a CDAI-100 response (≥100-point decrease in the CDAI score) (P=0.23). Among patients in cohorts 1 and 2 who had a response to induction therapy, 39.0% and 36.4% of those assigned to vedolizumab every 8 weeks and every 4 weeks, respectively, were in clinical remission at week 52, as compared with 21.6% assigned to placebo (P

Abstract

© 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC The conditional maxima of independent Poisson random variables are studied. A triangular array of row-wise independent Poisson random variables is considered. If condition is given for the row-wise sums, then the limiting distribution of the row-wise maxima is concentrated onto two points. The result is in accordance with the classical result of Anderson. The case of general power series distributions is also covered. The model studied in Theorems 2.1 and 2.2 is an analogue of the generalized allocation scheme. It can be considered as a non homogeneous generalized scheme of allocations of at most n balls into N boxes. Then the maximal value of the contents of the boxes is studied.

Abstract

Acceptable random variables introduced by Giuliano Antonini et al. (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 338:1188-1203, 2008) form a class of dependent random variables that contains negatively dependent random variables as a particular case. The concept of acceptability has been studied by authors under various versions of the definition, such as extended acceptability or wide acceptability. In this paper, we combine the concept of acceptability with the concept of conditioning, which has been the subject of current research activity. Abstract

Object. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of single high-dose gamma irradiation at a cellular biological level on tissue cultures obtained in patients who underwent surgery for cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Methods. The cell proliferation indices and changes in activation of p53, p21Waf-1, and mdm-2 were determined. Additionally, immunohistochemical investigations for vimentin, desmin, α—smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), glial fibrillary acidic protein, Factor VIII—related antigen (F-VIII), cytokeratin, S100, and transforming growth factor—β (TGFβ) were performed on cultured AVM cells after a single high-dose irradiation. Normal human brain microvessel endothelial (HBE) cells and aortic smooth muscle cells served as controls. The proliferation index decreased on the 5th day after irradiation and remained depressed over the observation period in the irradiated AVM cultures. The p53, p21Waf-1, and mdm-2 messenger RNA measurements showed considerable elevation both in AVM cultures and HBE cells after 15-Gy irradiation, which indicated apoptosis. Immunohistochemistry revealed strong vimentin positivity in the nonirradiated cultures, which gradually decreased in the irradiated cultures. Transforming growth factor—β positivity was demonstrated in the irradiated specimens, indicating transformation of fibroblastic cells into activated myofibroblastic elements. This transformation was confirmed by demonstrating elevated SMA expression as well in the radiation-treated fibroblasts. Conclusions. The presence of TGFβ and α-SMA activity in the irradiated AVM cells suggests that along with the genetically confirmed apoptotic activity, fibroblast transformation into myofibroblasts might be one of the mechanisms leading to shrinkage and obliteration of AVMs after single high-dose gamma irradiation.

The generalized allocation scheme is studied. Its extension for coloured balls is defined. Some analogues of the Law of the Iterated Logarithm and the Strong Law of Large Numbers are obtained for the number of boxes containing fixed numbers of balls.
