In organic semiconductors charge transport typically takes place via slow hopping processes. Molecular aggregation can lead to enhanced exciton and charge transport through coupling of the transition dipole moments. In this work, we investigate the optical, morphological, and electronic properties of thin films of a merocyanine dye, that aggregates due to its high ground-state dipole moment. The degree of aggregation of spin-coated thin films can be easily tuned by thermal annealing. We demonstrate the relationship between charge carrier mobility and the degree of aggregation. The mobility is increased by approximately three orders of magnitude due to aggregation. We combine variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry and polarization-resolved absorption spectroscopy with density functional theory to demonstrate that the aggregated molecules are oriented in an upright, standing configuration relative to the substrate surface. This arrangement involves a co-facial orientation of the molecular pi-systems which is advantageous for lateral charge transport. By utilizing highly oriented pyrolytic graphite as an ordered substrate, we are able to template the growth of the merocyanine layer in vapor phase deposition, and to improve the in-plane morphological order drastically. By correlating atomic force microscopy and photoluminescence microspectroscopy we observe oriented domains of 100s of {\mu}m^2 in size, emitting linearly polarized light, whereby maintaining the edge-on molecular arrangement. This promises a further significant enhancement of lateral charge carrier mobility.

Knowledge management (KM) involves collecting, organizing, storing, and disseminating information to improve decision-making, innovation, and performance. Implementing KM at scale has become essential for organizations to effectively leverage vast accessible data. This paper is a compilation of concepts that emerged from KM workshops hosted by EMBL-EBI, attended by SMEs and industry. We provide guidance on envisioning, executing, evaluating, and evolving knowledge management platforms. We emphasize essential considerations such as setting knowledge domain boundaries and measuring success, as well as the importance of making knowledge accessible for downstream applications and non-computational users and highlights necessary personal and organizational skills for success. We stress the importance of collaboration and the need for convergence on shared principles and commitment to provide or seek resources to advance KM. This paper contains two results of independent interest, the first being more mathematical in nature whereas the second more physical. We first show that the hierarchy of Higgs branch RG flows between the 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs known as A-type orbi-instantons is given by the Hasse diagram of certain strata and transverse slices in the double affine Grassmannian of $E_8$. Secondly, we leverage the partial order naturally defined on this Hasse diagram to prove the $a$-theorem for orbi-instanton Higgs branch RG flows, thereby exhausting the list of $c$-theorems in the even-dimensional (supersymmetric) setting., Comment: 50+8 pages. Graphene nanoribbons are one-dimensional stripes of graphene with width- and edge-structure-dependent electronic properties. They can be synthesized bottom-up in solution to obtain precise ribbon geometries. Here we investigate the optical properties of solution-synthesized 9-armchair graphene nanoribbons (9-aGNRs) that are stabilized as dispersions in organic solvents and further fractioned by liquid cascade centrifugation (LCC). Absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy reveal two near-infrared absorption and emission peaks whose ratios depend on the LCC fraction. Low-temperature single-nanoribbon photoluminescence spectra suggest the presence of two different nanoribbon species. Based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations, the lowest energy transition can be assigned to pristine 9-aGNRs, while 9-aGNRs with edge-defects, caused by incomplete graphitization, result in more blue-shifted transitions and higher Raman D/G-mode ratios. Hole doping of 9-aGNR dispersions with the electron acceptor F4TCNQ leads to concentration dependent bleaching and quenching of the main absorption and emission bands and the appearance of redshifted, charge-induced absorption features but no additional emission peaks, thus indicating the formation of polarons instead of the predicted trions (charged excitons) in doped 9-aGNRs.

We begin a study of the Higgs branch of six-dimensional $(1,0)$ little string theories governing the worldvolumes of heterotic ALE instantons. We give a description of this space by constructing the corresponding magnetic quiver. The latter is a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theory that flows in the infrared to a fixed point whose quantum corrected Coulomb branches is the Higgs branch of the six-dimensional theory of interest. We present results for both types of heterotic strings, and mostly for $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ ALE spaces. Our analysis is valid both in the absence and in the presence of small instantons. We settle a long-standing question about the hypermultiplet moduli spaces of the heterotic strings on ALE singularities. These heterotic backgrounds are specified by the singularity type, an instanton number, and a (nontrivial) flat connection at infinity. One-dimensional (1D) linear nanostructures comprising sp-hybridized carbon atoms, as derivatives of the prototypical allotrope known as carbyne, are predicted to possess outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. Despite recent advances in the synthesis, their chemical and physical properties are still poorly understood. Here, we investigate the photophysics of a prototypical polyyne (i.e., 1D chain with alternating single and triple carbon bonds), as the simplest model of finite carbon wire and as a prototype of sp-carbon-based chains. We perform transient absorption experiments with high temporal resolution (<30 fs) on monodispersed hydrogen-capped hexayne H$-$(C$\equiv$C)$_6-$H synthesized by laser ablation in liquid. With the support of detailed computational studies based on ground state density functional theory (DFT) and excited state time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations, we provide a comprehensive description of the excited state relaxation processes at early times following photoexcitation. We show that the internal conversion from a bright high-energy singlet excited state to a low-lying singlet dark state is ultrafast and takes place with a 200-fs time constant, followed by thermalization on the picosecond timescale and decay of the low-energy singlet state with hundreds of picoseconds time constant. We also show that the timescale of these processes does not depend on the end groups capping the sp-carbon chain. The understanding of the primary photo-induced events in polyynes is of key importance both for fundamental knowledge and for potential optoelectronic and light-harvesting applications of low dimensional nanostructured carbon-based materials., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

In this paper, we study connections between the classical model-based approach to nonlinear system theory, where systems are represented by equations, and the nonlinear behavioral approach, where systems are defined as sets of trajectories. In particular, we focus on equivalent representations of the systems in the two frameworks for the problem of simulating a future nonlinear system trajectory starting from a given set of noisy data. We extend the analysis of arXiv:2208.11703 to the 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs known as massive E-string theories, which can be engineered in massive Type IIA with $8-n_0<8$ D8-branes close to an O8$^-$ (or O8$^*$ if $n_0=8,9$). For each choice of $n_0=1,\ldots,9$ the massive $E_{1+(8-n_0)}$-strings (including the more exotic $\tilde{E}_1$ and $E_0$) are classified by constrained $E_8$ Kac labels, i.e. a subset of $\text{Hom}(\mathbb{Z}_k,E_8)$, from which one can read off the flavor subalgebra of $E_{1+(8-n_0)}$ of each SCFT. We construct hierarchies for two types of Higgs branch RG flows: flows between massive theories defined by the same $n_0$ but different labels; flows between massive theories with different $n_0$. These latter flows are triggered by T-brane vev's for the right $\mathrm{SU}$ factor of the SCFT global symmetry, whose rank is a function of both $k$ and $n_0$, a situation which has so far remained vastly unexplored., Comment: Part II of a series of papers; 37+11 pages; 13 figures

We study orientifold projections of families of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ toric quiver gauge theories. We restrict to quivers that have the unusual property of being associated with multiple periodic planar diagrams which give rise, in general, to inequivalent models. A suitable orientifold projection relates a subfamily of the latter by conformal duality. That is, there exist exactly marginal deformations that connect the projected models. The deformations take the form of a sign flip in some of the superpotential interactions, similarly to the $\beta$-deformation of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. $N$ M5-branes probing the intersection between the orbifold $\mathbb{C}^2/\Gamma_\text{ADE}$ and an $E_8$ wall give rise to 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs known as ADE-type orbi-instantons. At fixed $N$ and order of the orbifold, each element of $\text{Hom}(\Gamma_\text{ADE},E_8)$ defines a different SCFT. The SCFTs are connected by Higgs branch RG flows, which generically reduce the flavor symmetry of the UV fixed point. We determine the full hierarchy of these RG flows for type A, i.e. $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, for any value of $N$ and $k$. The hierarchy takes the form of an intricate Hasse diagram: each node represents an IR orbi-instanton (homomorphism), and each edge an allowed flow, compatibly with the 6d $a$-theorem. We study various orientifold projections of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ toric gauge theories, associated with CY singularities known as $L^{a,b,a}/\mathbb{Z}_2$, with $a+b$ even. We obtain superconformal chiral theories that have the same central charge, anomalies and superconformal index, whereas they were different before the orientifold. Some of these projections are implemented by a novel type of orientifold without fixed loci, known as glide orientifold. We claim that these theories flow to the same conformal manifold, and they are connected by quadratic exactly marginal deformations. The latter can be written in terms of conjugate pairs of bifundamental fields of $R$-charge one, generalizing previous results for unoriented non-chiral theories., Comment: 42 pages, 33 figures

Solution-processed, large-area, and flexible electronics largely relies on the excellent electronic properties of sp$^2$-hybridized carbon molecules, either in the form of $\pi$-conjugated small molecules and polymers or graphene and carbon nanotubes. Carbon with sp-hybridization, the foundation of the elusive allotrope carbyne, offers vast opportunities for functionalized molecules in the form of linear carbon atomic wires (CAWs), with intriguing and even superior predicted electronic properties. While CAWs represent a vibrant field of research, to date, they have only been applied sparingly to molecular devices. The recent observation of the field-effect in microcrystalline cumulenes suggests their potential applications in solution-processed thin-film transistors but concerns surrounding the stability and electronic performance have precluded developments in this direction. In the present study, ideal field-effect characteristics are demonstrated for solution-processed thin films of tetraphenyl[3]cumulene, the shortest semiconducting CAW. Films are deposited through a scalable, large-area, meniscus-coating technique, providing transistors with hole mobilities in excess of 0.1 cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$, as well as promising operational stability under dark conditions. These results offer a solid foundation for the exploitation of a vast class of molecular semiconductors for organic electronics based on sp-hybridized carbon systems and create a previously unexplored paradigm.

We study 4d SCFTs obtained by orientifold projections on necklace quivers with fractional branes. The models obtained by this procedure are $\mathcal{N}=1$ linear quivers with unitary, symplectic and orthogonal gauge groups, bifundamental and tensorial matter. Remarkably, models that are not dual in the unoriented case can have the same central charges and superconformal index after the projection. The reason for this behavior rests upon the ubiquitous presence of adjoint fields with R-charge one. We define and analyze the operations of addition and intersection of linear time-invariant systems in the behavioral setting, where systems are viewed as sets of trajectories rather than input-output maps. The classical definition of addition of input-output systems is addition of the outputs with the inputs being equal. In the behavioral setting, addition of systems is defined as addition of all variables. Intersection of linear time-invariant systems was considered before only for the autonomous case in the context of "common dynamics" estimation. We generalize the notion of common dynamics to open systems (systems with inputs) as intersection of behaviors. This is done by proposing trajectory-based definitions. The main results of the paper are 1) characterization of the link between the complexities (number of inputs and order) of the sum and intersection systems, 2) algorithms for computing their kernel and image representations and 3) a duality property of the two operations. Our approach combines polynomial and numerical linear algebra computations.
