The Cassiop\'ee project aims to develop the key technologies that will be used to deploy very high-performance Adaptive Optics for future ELTs. The ultimate challenge is to detect earth-like planets and characterize the composition of their atmosphere. For this, imaging contrasts of the order of 109 are required, implying a leap forward in adaptive optics performance, with high density deformable mirrors (120x120 actuators), low-noise cameras and the control of the loop at few kHz. The project brings together 2 industrial partners: First Light Imaging and ALPAO, and 2 academic partners: ONERA and LAM, who will work together to develop a new camera for wavefront sensing, a new deformable mirror and their implementation in an adaptive optics loop. This paper will present the development of the fast large infrared e-APD camera which will be used in the wavefront sensor of the system. The camera will integrate the latest 512x512 Leonardo e-APD array and will benefit from the heritage of the first-light imaging's C-RED One camera. MORFEO (Multi-conjugate adaptive Optics Relay For ELT Observations, formerly MAORY), the MCAO system for the ELT, will provide diffraction-limited optical quality to the large field camera MICADO. MORFEO has officially passed the Preliminary Design Review and it is entering the final design phase. We present the current status of the project, with a focus on the adaptive optics system aspects and expected milestones during the next project phase.

There have been no significant breakthroughs in infrared imagery since the hybridization of III-V or II-VI narrow-bandgap semiconductors on complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) read-out integrated circuits (ROICs). The development of third-generation, linear-mode avalanche photodiode arrays (LmAPDs) using mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) has resulted in a significant sensitivity improvement for short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging. The first dedicated LmAPD device, called SAPHIRA (320x256/24 microns), was designed by Leonardo UK Ltd specifically for SWIR astronomical applications. In the past decade there has been a significant development effort to make larger LmAPD arrays for low-background astronomy. Larger LmAPD formats for ultra-low noise/flux SWIR imaging, currently under development at Leonardo include a 512 x 512 LmAPD array funded by ESO, MPE and NRC Herzberg, a 1k x 1k array funded by NASA and a 2K x 2K device funded by ESA for general scientific imaging applications. The 2048x2048 pixel ROIC has a pitch of 15 microns, 4/8/16 outputs and a maximum frame rate of 10 Hz. The ROIC characterization is scheduled in the third quarter of 2022, while the first arrays will be fabricated by end-2022. The hybridized arrays will be characterized during end-2022. At this time, First Light Imaging will start the development of an autonomous camera integrating this 2Kx2K LmAPD array, based on the unique experience from the C-RED One camera, the only commercial camera integrating the SAPHIRA SWIR LmAPD array.The detector will be embedded in a compact high vacuum cryostat cooled with low vibration pulse at 50-80K which does not require external pumping. Sub-electron readout noise is expected to be achieved with high multiplication gain. Custom cold filters and beam aperture cold baffling will be integrated in the camera., Comment: 9 pages

We present here the latest results obtained with the C-RED One camera developed by First Light Imaging for fast ultra-low noise infrared applications. This camera uses the Leonardo Saphira e-APD 320x256 infrared sensor in an autonomous cryogenic environment with a low vibration pulse tube and with embedded readout electronics system. Some recent improvements were made to the camera. The first important one concerns the total noise of the camera. Limited to 1.75 microns wavelength cut-off with proper cold filters, looking at a blackbody at room temperature and f/4 beam aperture, we now measure total noise down to 0.6 e at gain 50 in CDS mode 1720 FPS, dividing previous noise figure by a factor 2. The total camera background of 30-400 e/s is now achieved with a factor 3 of background reduction, the camera also looking at a room temperature blackbody with an F/4 beam aperture. Image bias oscillations, due to electronics grounding scheme, were carefully analyzed and removed. Focal plane detector vibrations transmitted by the pulse tube cooling machine were also analyzed, damped and measured down to 0.3 microns RMS, reducing focal plane vibrations by a factor 3. In addition, a vacuum getter of higher capacity is now used to offer camera operation without camera pumping during months. The photon counting imaging paradigm in the visible and the infrared comes from the very small energy carried by a single photon at these wavelengths. Usually to detect photons the photoelectric effect is used. It converts a photon to a single electron making it very difficult to detect because of the readout noise of the electronics. To overcome this there are two strategies, either to amplify the signal to make it larger than the readout noise (used in the so called gain or amplified detectors), or to lower the readout noise in a standard image sensor. For a long time, only amplified detectors were able to do some photon counting. Since the first photon counting systems in the visible, developed by Boksenberg and his collaborators in 1972, many groups around the world improved photon counting techniques. In the 2000's in the visible, EMCCDs (electron multiplying charge coupled devices) allowed to replace the classical image intensifier photon counting systems by solid state devices and improved a lot the QE. But EMCCDs suffer from several issues, and the most important of them is the excess noise factor which prevents to know the exact incoming number of photons in the case of multiple photons per pixel. In the infrared there was no equivalent to EMCCDs up to the development of e-APD sensors and cameras made with HgCdTe material (electron initiated avalanche photo diode). With an excess noise factor near 1 at low temperatures, photon counting is possible with these devices but only in the infrared. We will show that having excess noise factor prevents from being able to do multiple photon counting (quanta imaging) and the only solution is to lower the readout noise.

MAORY is the adaptive optics module for ELT providing two gravity invariant ports with the same optical quality for two different client instruments. It enable high angular resolution observations in the near infrared over a large field of view (~1 arcmin2 ) by real time compensation of the wavefront distortions due to atmospheric turbulence. Wavefront sensing is performed by laser and natural guide stars while the wavefront sensor compensation is performed by an adaptive deformable mirror in MAORY which works together with the telescope's adaptive and tip tilt mirrors M4 and M5 respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Free space communications (FSO) is interesting for distant applications where high bandwidth is needed while using a fiber is not possible. However these links have to face several issues, and the most important one is the beam scintillation due to the propagation through a turbulent media, the atmosphere. Several mitigation strategies have been developed, but the best way to suppress scintillation is to use adaptive optics, widely used now in astronomy. The main difficulty for FSO is to probe the wavefront fast enough to have a good turbulence correction. This was not possible due to the lack of wavefront sensors working in the SWIR. C-RED 3 is a 640x512 SWIR camera running at 600FPS full frame and has the legacy of all the developments of astronomical infrared fast wavefront sensors on top of specific features for FSO (Low SWaP, Low Cost). We will present the performances of this new camera and demonstrate how it fulfills the needs of FSO adaptive optics.

The Multiconjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY (MAORY) is and Adaptive Optics module to be mounted on the ESO European-Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). It is a hybrid Natural and Laser Guide System that will perform the correction of the atmospheric turbulence volume above the telescope feeding the Multi-AO Imaging Camera for Deep Observations Near Infrared spectro-imager (MICADO). We developed an end-to-end Monte- Carlo adaptive optics simulation tool to investigate the performance of a the MAORY and the calibration, acquisition, operation strategies. MAORY will implement Multiconjugate Adaptive Optics combining Laser Guide Stars (LGS) and Natural Guide Stars (NGS) measurements. The simulation tool implements the various aspect of the MAORY in an end to end fashion. The code has been developed using IDL and uses libraries in C++ and CUDA for efficiency improvements. Superconducting Tunnel Junctions (STJ's) are currently being developed as photon detectors for a wide range of applications. Interest comes from their ability to cumulate photon counting with chromaticity (i.e. energy resolution) from the near infrared (2 $\mu$m) to the X-rays wavelengths and good quantum efficiency up to 80%. Resolving power can exceed 10 in the visible wavelength range. Our main goal is to use STJ's for astronomical observations at low light level in the near infrared. This paper put the emphasis on two main points: the improvement of the tantalum absorber epitaxy and the development of a new version of the fabrication process for making Ta/Al-AlOx-Al/Ta photon counting STJ's. The main features of this process are that pixels have aligned electrodes and vias patterned through a protecting SiO2 layer. These vias are then used to contact the top electrode layer. We use a double thin aluminum trapping layer on top of a 150 nm thick Ta absorber grown epitaxially. Photon counting experiments with Ta junction array are presented at \lambda = 0.78 $\mu$m. Digital filtering methods are used to compute the photon counting data in order to minimize the effects of noise.

(abridged) A complete census of planetary systems around a volume-limited sample of solar-type stars (FGK dwarfs) in the Solar neighborhood with uniform sensitivity down to Earth-mass planets within their Habitable Zones out to several AUs would be a major milestone in extrasolar planets astrophysics. This fundamental goal can be achieved with a mission concept such as NEAT - the Nearby Earth Astrometric Telescope. NEAT is designed to carry out space-borne extremely-high-precision astrometric measurements sufficient to detect dynamical effects due to orbiting planets of mass even lower than Earth's around the nearest stars. Such a survey mission would provide the actual planetary masses and the full orbital geometry for all the components of the detected planetary systems down to the Earth-mass limit. The NEAT performance limits can be achieved by carrying out differential astrometry between the targets and a set of suitable reference stars in the field. The NEAT instrument design consists of an off-axis parabola single-mirror telescope, a detector with a large field of view made of small movable CCDs located around a fixed central CCD, and an interferometric calibration system originating from metrology fibers located at the primary mirror. The proposed mission architecture relies on the use of two satellites operating at L2 for 5 years, flying in formation and offering a capability of more than 20,000 reconfigurations (alternative option uses deployable boom). The NEAT primary science program will encompass an astrometric survey of our 200 closest F-, G- and K-type stellar neighbors, with an average of 50 visits. The remaining time might be allocated to improve the characterization of the architecture of selected planetary systems around nearby targets of specific interest (low-mass stars, young stars, etc.) discovered by Gaia, ground-based high-precision radial-velocity surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy. In a few years, the second generation instruments of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) will routinely provide observations with 4 to 6 telescopes simultaneously. To reach their ultimate performance, they will need a fringe sensor capable to measure in real time the randomly varying optical paths differences. A collaboration between LAOG (PI institute), IAGL, OCA and GIPSA-Lab has proposed the Planar Optics Phase Sensor concept to ESO for the 2nd Generation Fringe Tracker. This concept is based on the integrated optics technologies, enabling the conception of extremely compact interferometric instruments naturally providing single-mode spatial filtering. It allows operations with 4 and 6 telescopes by measuring the fringes position thanks to a spectrally dispersed ABCD method. We present here the main analysis which led to the current concept as well as the expected on-sky performance and the proposed design.

Near-infrared observations of line emission from excited H2 and in the continuum are reported in the direction of the Orion molecular cloud OMC1, using the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope UT4, equipped with the NAOS adaptive optics system and the CONICA infrared array camera. Spatial resolution has been achieved at close to the diffraction limit of the telescope (0.08" - 0.12") and images show a wealth of morphological detail. Structure is not fractal but shows two preferred scale sizes of 2.4" (1100 AU) and 1.2" (540 AU), where the larger scale may be associated with star formation.
