Recently a new injection scheme for Laser Wake Field Acceleration, employing a single 100-TW-class laser system, has been proposed. In the Resonant Multi-Pulse Ionization injection (ReMPI) a resonant train of pulses drives a large amplitude plasma wave that traps electrons extracted from the plasma by further ionization of a high-Z dopant (Argon in the present paper). While the pulses of the driver train have intensity below the threshold for the dopant's ionization, the properly delayed and frequency doubled (or more) ionization pulse possesses an electric field large enough to extract electrons, though its normalized amplitude is well below unity. In this paper we will report on numerical simulations results aimed at the generation of GeV-scale bunches with normalized emittance and {\it rms} energy below $80\, nm \times rad $ and $0.5\, \%$, respectively. A numerical investigation on the spatiotemporal evolution of an electron beam, externally injected in a plasma in the presence of a plasma wake field, is carried out. The latter is driven by an ultra-short relativistic axially-symmetric femtosecond electron bunch. We first derive a novel Poisson-like equation for the wake potential where the driving term is the ultra-short bunch density, taking suitably into account the interplay between the sharpness and high energy of the bunch. Then, we show that a channel is formed longitudinally, through the externally injected beam while experiencing the effects of the bunch-driven plasma wake field, within the context of thermal wave model. The formation of the channel seems to be a final stage of the 3D evolution of the beam. This involves the appearance of small filaments and bubbles around the longitudinal axis. The bubbles coalesce forming a relatively stable axially-symmetric hollow beam structure., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

Self modulated dynamics of a relativistic charged particle beam is reviewed within the context of the theory of plasma wake field excitation. The self-consistent description of the beam dynamics is provided by coupling the Vlasov equation with a Poisson-type equation relating the plasma wake potential to the beam density. An analysis of the beam envelope self-modulation is then carried out and the criteria for the occurrence of the instability are discussed thereby., Comment: This is a 10 pages manuscript which contain 4 figures. The wake field excitation in an unmagnetized plasma by a multi-petawatt, femtosecond, pancake-shaped laser pulse is described both analytically and numerically in the regime with ultrarelativistic electron jitter velocities, when the plasma electrons are almost expelled from the pulse region. This is done, for the first time, in fluid theory. A novel mathematical model is devised that does not break down for very intense pump strengths, in contrast to the standard approach that uses the laser field envelope and the ponderomotive guiding center averaging. This is accomplished by employing a three-timescale description, with the intermediate scale associated with the nonlinear phase of the electromagnetic wave and with the bending of its wave front. The evolution of the pulse and of its electrostatic wake are studied by the numerical solution in a two-dimensional geometry, with the spot diameter \geq 100 microns. It reveals that the optimum initial pulse length needs to be somewhat bigger than 1 micron (1-2 oscillations), as suggested by simple analytical local estimates, because the nonlocal plasma response tends to stretch very short pulses.

Recently, a theoretical investigation of the collective and nonlocal quantum effects has been carried out within the framework of a quantum approach to the relativistic charged particle beam travelling in a cold, collisionless, strongly magnetized plasma. This has been done taking into account both the plasma wake field excitation and the quantum paraxial approximation. On the basis of this theory, here we carry out a preliminary study of the transverse effects experienced by a cold relativistic beam through a thin plasma slab (plasma lens). In the strongly nonlocal regime, in which the beam experiences a very strong focusing effect, the scheme of plasma lens is reviewed in terms of the wave description provided by the above quantum theory.

A hydrodynamical description of coherent instabilities that take place in the longitudinal dynamics of a charged-particle coasting beam in a high-energy accelerating machine is presented. This is done in the framework of the Madelung fluid picture provided by the Thermal Wave Model. The well known coherent instability charts in the complex plane of the longitudinal coupling impedance for monochromatic beams are recovered. The results are also interpreted in terms of the deterministic approach to modulational instability analysis usually given for monochromatic large amplitude wave train propagation governed by the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The instability analysis is then extended to a non-monochromatic coasting beam with a given thermal equilibrium distribution, thought as a statistical ensemble of monochromatic incoherent coasting beams ("white" beam). In this hydrodynamical framework, the phenomenon of Landau damping is predicted without using any kinetic equation governing the phase space evolution of the system., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

New type of tomographic probability distribution, which contains complete information on the density matrix (wave function) related to the Fresnel transform of the complex wave function, is introduced. Relation to symplectic tomographic probability distribution is elucidated. Multimode generalization of the Fresnel tomography is presented. The theory of electron holes is extended into the quantum regime. The Wigner--Poisson system is solved perturbatively based in lowest order on a weak, standing electron hole. Quantum corrections are shown to lower the potential amplitude and to increase the number of deeply trapped electrons. They, hence, tend to bring this extreme non--equilibrium state closer to thermodynamic equilibrium, an effect which can be attributed to the tunneling of particles in this mixed state system., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

It is shown that the transmission line technology can be suitably used for simulating quantum mechanics. Using manageable and at the same time non-expensive technology, several quantum mechanical problems can be simulated for significant tutorial purposes. The electric signal envelope propagation through the line is governed by a Schrodinger-like equation for a complex function, representing the low-frequency component of the signal, In this preliminary analysis, we consider two classical examples, i.e. the Frank-Condon principle and the Ramsauer effect.

On the basis of a recently-proposed method to find solitary solutions of generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equations [1]-[3], the existence of an envelope solitonlike solutions of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation containing an anti-cubic nonlinearity (|Psi|^{-4} Psi) plus a "regular" nonlinear part is investigated. In particular, in case the regular nonlinear part consists of a sum of a cubic and a quintic nonlinearities (i.e. q_1 |Psi|^2 Psi + q_2 |Psi|^4 Psi), an upper-shifted bright envelope solitonlike solution is explicitly found.

It is shown that partial incoherence, in the form of stochastic phase noise, of a Langmuir wave in an unmagnetized plasma gives rise to a Landau-type damping. Starting from the Zakharov equations, which describe the nonlinear interaction between Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves, a kinetic equation is derived for the plasmons by introducing the Wigner-Moyal transform of the complex Langmuir wave field. This equation is then used to analyze the stability properties of small perturbations on a stationary solution consisting of a constant amplitude wave with stochastic phase noise. The concomitant dispersion relation exhibits the phenomenon of Landau-like damping. However, this damping differs from the classical Landau damping in which a Langmuir wave, interacting with the plasma electrons, loses energy. In the present process, the damping is non-dissipative and is caused by the resonant interaction between an instantaneously-produced disturbance, due to the parametric interactions, and a partially incoherent Langmuir wave, which can be considered as a quasi-particle composed of an ensemble of partially incoherent plasmons., Comment: 12 pages

The nonlinear coupling between the light beams and non-resonant ion density perturbations in a plasma is considered, taking into account the relativistic particle mass increase and the light beam ponderomotive force. A pair of equations comprising a nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the light beams and a driven (by the light beam pressure) ion-acoustic wave response is derived. It is shown that the stationary solutions of the nonlinear equations can be represented in the form of a bright and dark/gray soliton for one-dimensional problem. We have also present a numerical analysis which shows that our bright soliton solutions are stable exclusively for the values of the parameters compatible with of our theory., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We study the nonlinear energy transfer around the peak of the spectrum of surface gravity waves by taking into account nonhomogeneous effects. In the narrow-banded approximation the kinetic equation resulting from a nonhomogeneous wave field is a Vlasov-Poisson type equation which includes at the same time the random version of the Benjamin-Feir instability and the Landau damping phenomenon. We analytically derive the values of the Phillips' constant $\alpha$ and the enhancement factor $\gamma$ for which the narrow-banded approximation of the JONSWAP spectrum is unstable. By performing numerical simulations of the nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation we check the validity of the prediction of the related kinetic equation. We find that the effect of Landau damping is to suppress the formation of coherent structures. The problem of predicting freak waves is briefly discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

A classical description of the dynamics of a dissipative charged-particle fluid in a quadrupole-like device is developed. It is shown that the set of the classical fluid equations contains the same information as a complex function satisfying a Schrodinger-like equation in which Planck's constant is replaced by the time-varying emittance, which is related to the time-varying temperature of the fluid. The squared modulus and the gradient of the phase of this complex function are proportional to the fluid density and to the current velocity, respectively. Within this framework, the dynamics of an electron bunch in a storage ring in the presence of radiation damping and quantum-excitation is recovered. Furthermore, both standard and generalized (including dissipation) coherent states that may be associated with the classical particle fluids are fully described in terms of the above formalism., Comment: LaTex, to appear in Physica Scripta

A novel statistical approach based on the Wigner transform is proposed for the description of partially incoherent optical wave dynamics in nonlinear media. An evolution equation for the Wigner transform is derived from a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with arbitrary nonlinearity. It is shown that random phase fluctuations of an incoherent plane wave lead to a Landau-like damping effect, which can stabilize the modulational instability. In the limit of the geometrical optics approximation, incoherent, localized, and stationary wave-fields are shown to exist for a wide class of nonlinear media., Comment: 4 pages, REVTeX4. It is shown that charged-particle beam transport in the paraxial approximation can be effectively described with a quantum-like picture in semiclassical approximation. In particular, the classical Liouville equation can be suitably replaced by a von Neuman-like equation. Within the Thermal Wave Model framework a comparison among Wigner function, Husimi function, and the phase-space distribution given by a particle tracking code is made for a particle beam travelling through a linear lens with small aberrations. On the basis of the recently proposed {\it Thermal Wave Model (TWM) for particle beams}, we give a description of the longitudinal charge particle dynamics in circular accelerating machines by taking into account both radiation damping and quantum excitation (stochastic effect), in presence of a RF potential well. The longitudinal dynamics is governed by a 1-D Schr\"{o}dinger-like equation for a complex wave function whose squared modulus gives the longitudinal bunch density profile. In this framework, the appropriate {\it r.m.s. emittance} scaling law, due to the damping effect, is naturally recovered, and the asymptotic equilibrium condition for the bunch length, due to the competition between quantum excitation (QE) and radiation damping (RD), is found. In this paper, by using an analogy among {\it quantum mechanics}, {\it electromagnetic beam optics in optical fibers}, and {\it charge particle beam dynamics}, we introduce the concept of {\it coherent states} for charged particle beams in the framework of the {\it Thermal Wave Model} (TWM). We give a physical meaning of the Gaussian-like coherent structures of charged particle distribution that are both naturally and artificially produced in an accelerating machine in terms of the concept of coherent states widely used in quantum mechanics and in quantum optics. According to TWM, this can be done by using a Schr\"{o}dinger-like equation for a complex function, the so-called {\it beam wave function} (BWF), whose squared modulus is proportional to the transverse beam density profile, where Planck's constant and the time are replaced by the transverse beam emittance and by the propagation coordinate, respectively. The evolution of the particle beam, whose initial BWF is assumed to be the simplest coherent state (ground-like state) associated with the beam, in an infinite 1-D quadrupole-like device with small sextupole and octupole aberrations, is analytically and numerically investigated., Comment: 21 pages, Latex
