The Galactic magnetic field plays an important role in the evolution of the Galaxy, but its small-scale behaviour is still poorly known. It is not known whether the Galactic field permeates the halo of the Galaxy. By observing pulsars in the halo globular cluster 47 Tucanae, we have probed the Galactic magnetic field at arcsecond scales, discovering an unexpected large gradient in the component of the magnetic field parallel to the line of sight. This gradient is aligned with a direction perpendicular to the Galactic disk and could be explained by magnetic fields amplified to some 60 mu G within the globular cluster. Such a scenario supports the existence of a magnetized outflow that extends from the Galactic disk to the halo and interacts with 47 Tucanae. Observations of the Faraday rotation towards pulsars in the halo globular cluster 47 Tucanae have been used to constrain the magnetic field strength in the Galactic halo, finding that it is unexpectedly strong.

We report on the first pulsar and transient survey of the Galactic Center (GC) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The observations were conducted during the Global Millimeter VLBI Array campaign in 2017 and 2018. We carry out searches using timeseries of both total intensity and other polarization components in the form of Stokes parameters. We incorporate acceleration and its derivative in the pulsar search, and also search in segments of the entire observation to compensate for potential orbital motion of the pulsar. While no new pulsar is found, our observations yield the polarization profile of the GC magnetar PSR J1745-2900 at mm-wavelength for the first time, which turns out to be nearly 100 % linearly polarized. Additionally, we estimate the survey sensitivity placed by both system and red noise, and evaluate its capability of finding pulsars in orbital motion with either Sgr A* or a binary companion. We show that the survey is sensitive to only the most luminous pulsars in the known population, and future observations with ALMA in Band-1 will deliver significantly deeper survey sensitivity on the GC pulsar population., 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report here on initial results from the Thousand Pulsar Array (TPA) programme, part of the Large Survey Project "MeerTime" on the MeerKAT telescope. The interferometer is used in tied-array mode in the band from 856 to 1712~MHz, and the wide band coupled with the large collecting area and low receiver temperature make it an excellent telescope for the study of radio pulsars. The TPA is a 5 year project which aims to observe (a) more than 1000 pulsars to obtain high-fidelity pulse profiles, (b) some 500 of these pulsars over multiple epochs, (c) long sequences of single-pulse trains from several hundred pulsars. The scientific outcomes from the programme will include determination of pulsar geometries, the location of the radio emission within the pulsar magnetosphere, the connection between the magnetosphere and the crust and core of the star, tighter constraints on the nature of the radio emission itself as well as interstellar medium studies. First results presented here include updated dispersion measures, 26 pulsars with Faraday rotation measures derived for the first time and a description of interesting emission phenomena observed thus far., Accepted by MNRAS

By investigating the linearly polarized component of a pulsar signal at different radio frequencies it is possible to derive constraints on the parallel component of the magnetic field along the line of sight (los) to the pulsar. In this work we have measured the polarimetric properties of 18 known pulsars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae and we report for the first time the rotation measure (RM) for 13 of them. Our study led to the discovery of a gradient in the RM values of the pulsars across the cluster. This indicates the presence of significant variations in the magnetic field across the very small angular scales beween the pulsars in 47 Tucanae. We discuss the hypotheses that the magnetic field responsible for the gradient is located inside the globular cluster or in the Galactic disk in the direction of the cluster. However, deeper observations with the MeerKAT and/or the SKA1 radio telescopes are necessary to discriminate among the hypotheses.

Theoretical models suggest that intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) may form and reside in the centers of globular clusters. IMBHs are still elusive to observations, but the accelerations of pulsars may bring along a unique fingerprint of their presence. In this work, we focus on the pulsars in the globular cluster M62. Using the new distance of M62 obtained from Gaia observations, we find that the measured pulsars' accelerations suggest a central excess of mass in the range [1200, 6000]$M_{\odot}$, corresponding to [0.2, 1] percent of the current total mass of the cluster. Our analysis can not unambiguously discriminate between an IMBH or a system of stellar mass dark remnants of comparable total mass., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Despite considerations of mass loss from stellar evolution suggesting otherwise, the content of gas in globular clusters seems poor and hence its measurement very elusive. One way of constraining the presence of ionized gas in a globular cluster is through its dispersive effects on the radiation of the millisecond pulsars included in the cluster. This effect led Freire et al. in 2001 to the first detection of any kind of gas in a globular cluster in the case of 47 Tucanae. By exploiting the results of 12 additional years of timing, as well as the observation of new millisecond pulsars in 47 Tucanae, we revisited this measurement: we first used the entire set of available timing parameters in order to measure the dynamical properties of the cluster and the three-dimensional position of the pulsars. Then we applied and tested various gas distribution models: assuming a constant gas density, we confirmed the detection of ionized gas with a number density of $n= 0.23\pm 0.05$ cm$^{-3}$, larger than the previous determination (at 2$\sigma$ uncertainty). Models predicting a decreasing density or following the stellar distribution density are highly disfavoured. We are also able to investigate the presence of an intermediate mass black hole in the centre of the cluster, showing that is not required by the available data, with an upper limit for the mass at $\sim 4000$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The origin of the Nuclear Star Cluster in the centre of our Galaxy is still unknown. One possibility is that it formed after the disruption of stellar clusters that spiralled into the Galactic Centre due to dynamical friction. We trace the formation of the Nuclear Star Cluster around the central black hole, using state-of-the-art N-body simulations, and follow the dynamics of the neutron stars born in the clusters. We then estimate the number of Millisecond Pulsars (MSPs) that are released in the Nuclear Star Cluster, during its formation. The assembly and tidal dismemberment of globular clusters lead to a population of MSPs distributed over a radius of about 20 pc, with a peak near 3 pc. No clustering is found on the sub-parsec scale. We simulate the detectability of this population with future radio telescopes like the MeerKAT radio telescope and SKA1, and find that about of order ten MSPs can be observed over this large volume, with a paucity of MSPs within the central parsec. This helps discriminating this scenario from the in-situ formation model for the Nuclear Star Cluster that would predict an over abundance of MSPs closer to the black hole. Globular clusters may host intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) at their centres. Here we propose a new method for their identification using millisecond pulsars (MSPs) as probes. We show that measuring the first (jerk) and second (jounce) derivatives of the accelerations of an ensemble of MSPs will let us infer the presence of an IMBH in a globular cluster better than measuring the sole accelerations. We test this concept by simulating a set of star clusters with and without a central IMBH to extract the distributions of the stellar jerks and jounces. We then apply this technique to the ensemble of MSPs in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Current timing observations are insufficient to constrain the presence of an IMBH and can only be used to pose upper limits on its mass. But, with few more years of observations it will be possible to test for the presence of a central IMBH with mass smaller than $\sim$ 1000 M$_{\odot}$. We conclude that jerks and jounces help significantly in reducing the upper limit of the mass of IMBHs in Galactic globular clusters., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
