This protocol is designed to prepare adult axenic Drosophila before monitoring their behavior in a two-choice feeding assay, where flies are confronted with an axenic versus a dead or alive bacteria-contaminated feeding solution. Several aspects of the procedure, including raising and aging flies in axenic conditions, starving adult flies, and composing feeding solutions, are detailed. The bacterium used in this protocol, Erwinia carotovora carotovora-15 2141 ( Ecc-15 2141 ), is commonly used to decipher the mechanisms controlling host-pathogen interactions in the Drosophila model. Metabolic alterations are relevant for the aging process. Declining metabolic rate with age is a common future of many animals, but it is not well understood how it does so. Here, we used zebrafish as a model for understanding how metabolic changes occur during aging and the interaction between aging and obesity on the metabolic rate. The oxygen consumption rate (OCR) has been used as an index of metabolic processes; however, it is difficult to accurately evaluate OCR with movement being considered because zebrafish need to move freely during the OCR measurement. To measure metabolic rate with high accuracy and efficiency, we developed a method for simultaneously collecting data on sequential oxygen consumption and distance moved by zebrafish using optical dissolved-oxygen sensors and the EthoVision video-tracking system as well as an automatic feeding system for zebrafish whereby obese zebrafish were produced by short-term overfeeding treatment. Using these systems, we examined metabolic changes during aging and overfeeding. First, we used 1- to 22-month-old zebrafish to evaluate changes in metabolism during the aging process. Measurements of body mass and length showed that the growth of the body rarely continued beyond 6 months, at which point zebrafish reach adulthood. Spontaneous swimming activity peaked at approximately 6-10 months and declined thereafter. Metabolic rates at low movement dramatically dropped during the first 4 months and gradually decreased with age after 10 months. These data suggest that metabolic aging becomes evident at approximately 10-14 months and that the metabolic rate (low movement) is useful for the detection of age-related metabolic changes in zebrafish. Second, by short-term overfeeding treatment using the automatic feeding system, we found that overweight is a strong risk factor for the development of metabolic disorders in zebrafish, but there was no interaction between obesity and aging on the metabolic rate. Background: Tube feedings are often needed to achieve the growth and nutrition goals associated with decreased morbidity and mortality in patients with single ventricle anatomy. Variability in feeding method through the interstage period has been previously described, however, comparable information following stage 2 palliation is lacking., Objectives: To identify types of feeding methods following stage 2 palliation and their influence on length of stay., Design: Secondary analysis of the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative registry was performed on 932 patients. Demographic data, medical characteristics, postoperative complications, type of feeding method, and length of stay for stage 2 palliation were analyzed., Results: Type of feeding method remained relatively unchanged during hospitalization for stage 2 palliation. Gastrostomy tube fed only patients were the oldest at time of surgery (182.7 ± 57.7 days, P < .001) and had the lowest weight-for-age z scores at admission (-1.6 ± 1.4, P < .001). Oral + gastrostomy tube groups had the longest median bypass times (172.5 minutes, P = .001) and longest length of stay (median 12 days, P < .001). Multivariable modeling revealed that feeding by tube only (P < .001), oral + tube feeding (P ≤ .001), reintubation (P < .001), and prolonged intubation (P < .001) were associated with increased length of stay. Neither age (P = .156) nor weight-for-age z score at admission (P = .066) was predictive of length of stay., Conclusions: Feeding methods established at admission for stage 2 palliation are not likely to change by discharge. Length of stay is more likely to be impacted by tube feeding and intubation history than age or weight-for-age z score at admission. Better understanding for selection of feeding methods and their impact on patient outcomes is needed to develop evidence-based guidelines to decrease variability in clinical practice patterns and provide appropriate counseling to caregivers., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Objective: To evaluate the feeding performance of infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on paladai., Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in a level III neonatal unit in North India from March through August 2012. Nineteen infants (27-32 wk of gestation) were enrolled; 9 in BPD group (oxygen requirement for at least 28 d) and 10 in 'No BPD' group. Paladai feeding (PF) sessions were video recorded for 3 d serially, at first successful (FSF) at postnatal age of ≥28 d and follow up feeding (FUF) at 40 ± 2 wk. Successful feeding was defined as ≥80% intake of volume prescribed. One hundred and four videos were analysed (58 in BPD group and 46 in 'No BPD' group). The outcome variables were: (1) postmenstrual age (PMA) at FSF (2) feeding performance, as assessed by proficiency (mL/min, volume of feed intake during only active feeding), efficiency (mL/min, volume of feed intake during total duration of feeding) and overall feed transfer (OT, % of prescribed feed volume taken), and (3) change in heart rate (∆HR) and oxygen saturation (∆SpO 2 ) on PF., Results: PMA (Weeks, 34.2 ± 2.0 vs. 33.6 ± 1.2, p = 0.13), performance on FSF [Median (range), Proficiency: ml/min, 4.2 (1.1, 21.7) vs. 3.4 (1.1, 12.4), efficiency: ml/min, 2.7 (0.4, 6.2) vs. 2.5 (0.9, 10.9)] and OT (%, mean ± SD: 84.9 ± 22.5 vs. 89.1 ± 9.6), and on FUF were comparable between the groups. Changes in SpO 2 and HR were not significantly different., Conclusions: Infants with BPD perform comparably well on PF. PF can safely be attempted in them to facilitate transition to oral feeding.

Optimisation and use of a device for the on-hen in vivo feeding of all hematophagous stages of Dermanyssus gallinae is described. The sealed mesh device contains the mites and is applied to the skin of the hen's thigh where mites can feed on the bird through a mesh which has apertures large enough to allow the mites' mouth-parts to access to the bird but small enough to contain the mites. By optimising the depth and width of the mesh aperture size we have produced a device which will lead to both reduction and refinement in the use of animals in research, allowing the pre-screening of new vaccines and systemic acaricides/insecticides which have been developed for the control of these blood-feeding parasites before progressing to large field trials. For optimal use, the device should be constructed from 105 μm aperture width, 63 μm depth, polyester mesh and the mites (irrespective of life stage) should be conditioned with no access to food for 3 weeks at 4 °C for optimal feeding and post-feeding survival., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. Objective: For patients with dysphagia, decisions must be made for provision of nutrition and hydration. This retrospective audit explored feeding decisions for patients with severe oropharyngeal dysphagia., Methods: Fifty adult inpatients were identified across a 15-month period as requiring a feeding decision due to severe persisting oropharyngeal dysphagia. For each patient, all admissions (previous and subsequent admissions up to and including six months postrecruitment) where dysphagia or dysphagia-related complications were reported in the discharge summary were audited., Results: A total of 103 admissions were identified with palliation in 22%. Enteral tube feeding (ETF) was initiated in 19% of admissions; and 63% of enteral tube placements failed. Nil-by-mouth with ETF was the final feeding decision in only 8% of admissions, while 43% of admissions led to documented oral feeding despite risk. Dysphagia was documented in only 44% of discharge summaries, with a feeding decision documented in only 34%., Conclusion: Variation in management and poor documentation in this cohort suggest the need for a Risk Feeding Clinical Guideline., (© 2018 AJA Inc.)

Tick-borne disease is a hemolytic disease complex that causes extensive losses to the dairy industry in tropical regions. Its timely diagnosis is challenging and labor intensive. Our objective was to investigate whether tick-borne disease was associated with changes in ingestive behavior of weaned dairy calves. Weaned calves (n = 35) enrolled at 108 ± 8 d of age were group housed (n = 12, 12, and 11/group) for 4 wk in the experimental pen, which had 12 electronic feed bins and 2 electronic water bins. Data were automatically collected at each feed or water bin visit via radio frequency identification ear tags. Water and total mixed ration were provided ad libitum. Calves were examined weekly for tick-borne disease detection. A disease bout was confirmed if packed cell volume was ≤25% at any exam. Diseased calves received antimicrobial and antipyretic treatment. Data were summarized by day within bin type (feed or water) as intake (kg/d; as-fed basis), frequency of visits (visits/d), and total duration of visits (min/d). Day of detection was set as d 0; a 9-d behavioral screening period for evaluation of behavioral changes was set according to d 0 (d -4 to +4). A within-calf mean was calculated for the healthy period (HP; mean of all days between 2 consecutive negative exams) for each response variable. Data were analyzed as within-calf differences between HP and each day of the behavioral screening period. Tick-borne disease was detected in 12 calves; thus, only data referent to these animals were included in the analyses. Compared with HP, daily feed intake was reduced on d -1, 0, and +1, and daily frequency and total duration of feed bin visits were reduced from d -3 to d +4. Daily feed intake was reduced by 35% on d -1 (3.5 ± 0.4 vs. 5.4 ± 0.5 kg/d for HP), and daily frequency and duration of visits were reduced by 27% (56.3 ± 7.8 vs. 76.7 ± 8.1 visits/d for HP) and 24% (27.0 ± 3.8 vs. 35.4 ± 3.9 min/d for HP) on d -3, respectively. Daily water intake on d 0 (9.1 ± 1.4 kg/d) was lower than at HP (12.9 ± 1.6 kg/d), but other drinking behaviors were not different from healthy means during the screening period. Feeding behavior, but not drinking behavior, was different from HP means before detection at weekly exams. Background: Breast milk represents the optimal substrate for all infants, including those with a cleft palate for whom growth may be compromised., Objectives: Frequency of breast milk feeding at the breast and per feeder (bottle, cup, enteral tube) in infants with cleft palate was determined and compared with rates reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A secondary aim was to review growth status of the infants., Design: This study represents a 5-year retrospective review using the electronic medical record., Participants and Setting: Patients were ≤12 months old at the time of the initial, presurgical encounter after a diagnosis of cleft palate had been made and were treated at one of two pediatric cleft palate and craniofacial centers in Ohio between September 30, 2010, and September 30, 2015., Main Outcome Measures: Outcomes measured were breast milk use, reported by mothers and documented in patients' electronic medical records, chronological body weight, as well as weight for length and weight-for-age z scores and percentiles., Statistical Analyses Performed: Descriptive statistics included median with interquartile range and frequency with percentages. World Health Organization z scores were estimated using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention programs for weight, weight for length, and weight for age at first visit. Comparisons of infants treated at the two hospitals were done using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test or the χ 2 test., Results: Breast milk consumption (26 infants were breastfed and 84 received human breast milk administered with a device) was 29.5%, markedly below the 2016 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention national statistics for ever receiving breast milk (81%). Anthropometric findings included z scores of -0.95 and -0.42 for weight for age and weight for length, respectively., Conclusions: Infants with cleft palate were seldom breastfed, nor was breast milk frequently used. Automatic milk feeders (AMF) for young dairy calves are widely used in the dairy industry. These feeders are thought to have benefits for calf health and welfare and may reduce labor required for feeding; however, little is known about how calves adapt to feeding with AMF. The objective of this study was to observe the effects of feeding stall design on calves learning to use the AMF. The hypothesis was that solid side stalls, compared with steel bar stalls, would result in a longer latency to approach and feed from the AMF without assistance. A total of 147 Holstein calves (80 male and 67 female) were enrolled at 4 d of age, introduced to a group pen, and, at the same time, trained on an AMF. For training, calves were allowed to suck on the trainer's fingers and guided to the teat. Calves were allocated to 1 of 2 stall designs at the pen level, depending on which treatment cohort they were born into, either with steel bar stall walls (n = 46 male, 34 female calves) or with solid side stall walls (n = 34 male, 33 female calves). For 72 h after introductory training on the AMF, data from the feeders were collected and calf behavior was monitored by video. Outcomes measured included latency to first voluntary visit to the feeder and to first feeding, time spent in the feeder, amount of milk consumed over 72 h, number of retraining sessions required (retrained if <2 L was consumed every 12 h), and exploratory behavior, such as sniffing and licking of the feeder. Data were analyzed using mixed effects linear regression models or a Poisson model for the outcome of retraining. For certain outcomes the effects of stall design interacted with difficulty of training (willingness to enter feeder and drink); for the 38% of calves that were scored as moderately difficult to train on a scale of easy, moderate, or difficult, treatment (stall design) differences were detected. These calves took 2× longer to lick or bite toward the nipple, 2× longer to first voluntarily feeding, and consumed less milk over 72 h following training when trained on the steel bar stall design. These results suggest simple features of a stall may influence how quickly calves learn to use an AMF, but that the influence of stall wall design was affected by how easy calves were to train on the feeder upon initial introduction, which may depend in part on certain aspects of calf temperament. Objective: Neurological bilateral upper limb weakness can result in self-feeding difficulties and reliance on care providers. Mealtimes become time consuming and frustrating. In this exploratory inquiry, we examined the experiences of users of a feeding device., Method: Semistructured interviews were either conducted by telephone or administered via email to explore quality of life, changes to independence, benefits and limitations, and psychological impact of the equipment., Results: Thematic analysis gave rise to five themes: independence and positivity, emotions, impact on family and social life, equipment functionality, and motivation., Conclusion: This exploratory inquiry has contributed new qualitative evidence to the knowledge and understanding of users' experiences of a manual feeding device. Users reported that the need for assistance was reduced and that their quality of life, independence, and freedom improved. The objective of this study was to determine if feeding colostrum to newborn calves through an esophageal tube, compared with a nipple bottle, would delay abomasal emptying, which would in turn decrease passive transfer of IgG and plasma glucose, insulin, and glucagon-like peptide (GLP) 1 and GLP-2 concentrations. Twenty newborn Holstein bull calves were fed 3 L of colostrum replacer (200 g of IgG) through either an esophageal tube or nipple bottle at 2 h after birth followed by feeding pooled whole milk every 12 h after birth. Acetaminophen was mixed into the colostrum meal as a marker for abomasal emptying. A jugular catheter was inserted 1 h after birth and blood was sampled frequently to analyze serum for IgG and acetaminophen and plasma for glucose, insulin, GLP-1, and GLP-2. Feeding method did not affect abomasal emptying, and as a result no treatment effect was present on serum IgG concentrations. Maximum concentration of serum IgG was 24.4 ± 0.40 mg/mL (± standard error), which was reached at 14.6 ± 1.88 h after the colostrum meal for both groups. Apparent efficiency of absorption at maximum concentration of IgG was 52.9%, indicating high efficiency of passive transfer of IgG for both treatments. Tube feeding increased glucose and insulin area under the curve before the first milk meal, most likely due to the decreased time to consume the colostrum meal. In addition, tube-fed calves consumed 0.5 ± 0.13 L more milk in their first milk meal than bottle-fed calves. No treatment effect on plasma concentrations of GLP-1 or GLP-2 was present, but both hormones increased after colostrum feeding. These findings confirm that there is no effect on absorption of IgG from colostrum when feeding good-quality colostrum at a volume of 3 L through either an esophageal tube or nipple bottle., (Copyright © 2018 American Dairy Science Association. Data on management practices used with automated milk feeders (AMF) are needed to identify factors associated with calf health in these systems. The objectives of this observational, longitudinal, cross-sectional study were to estimate the prevalence of calf diarrhea (CD) and bovine respiratory disease (BRD), and to identify factors associated with prevalence of these diseases at the pen level on dairy farms feeding milk to group-housed calves with AMF. Seventeen dairy farms with AMF in Ontario, Canada, were visited 4 times, seasonally, over 1 yr. The clinical health of all calves (n = 1,488) in pens (n = 35) with AMF was scored to identify the number of calves with CD and BRD. Data on calf, feeder, and pen management practices were analyzed using generalized linear mixed regression models for each disease. Overall calf-level prevalence of CD and BRD were 23 and 17%, respectively. Median (interquartile range, IQR) within-pen prevalence of CD and BRD were 17% (7 to 37%) and 11% (0 to 28%), respectively. Median age (IQR) for diarrheic calves was 25 d (16 to 42 d), and for calves with BRD was 43 d (29 to 60 d). Factors associated with lower within-pen prevalence of CD were the administration of vitamin E and selenium at birth [odds ratio (OR) = 0.56; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.32 to 0.99], feeding of probiotics (OR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.22 to 0.93), and adding fresh bedding every 2 to 3 d (OR = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.24 to 0.76) compared with every 7 or more days. In contrast, sharing air with older cattle (>9 mo old) was associated with increased within-pen prevalence of CD (OR = 4.54, 95% CI: 1.88 to 10.52). Additionally, total bacteria counts ≥100,000 cfu/mL in milk samples taken from the AMF mixing jar were associated with increased within-pen prevalence of CD during the summer visit (OR = 3.34; 95% CI: 1.31 to 8.54). Increased total solids in milk or milk replacer (OR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.27 to 0.85) and feeding whole milk versus milk replacer (OR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.11 to 0.75) were associated with lower within-pen prevalence of BRD. Factors associated with greater within-pen prevalence of BRD were sharing air with weaned cattle up to 8 mo old (OR = 3.21, 95% CI: 1.26 to 8.16), and greater depth of the wet bedding pack. The use of maternity pens for reasons other than just calving was associated with increased prevalence of both CD and BRD (OR = 1.85, 95% CI: 1.03 to 3.33; OR = 2.61, 95% CI: 1.21 to 5.58, respectively). These results suggest that isolation from older animals and frequent cleaning of the feeder and pen may help to reduce disease prevalence in group-housed calves fed with an AMF., (Copyright © 2018 American Dairy Science Association. The aim of the present study was to evaluate empirically confusion matrices in device validation. We compared the confusion matrix method to linear regression and error indices in the validation of a device measuring feeding behaviour of dairy cattle. In addition, we studied how to extract additional information on classification errors with confusion probabilities. The data consisted of 12 h behaviour measurements from five dairy cows; feeding and other behaviour were detected simultaneously with a device and from video recordings. The resulting 216 000 pairs of classifications were used to construct confusion matrices and calculate performance measures. In addition, hourly durations of each behaviour were calculated and the accuracy of measurements was evaluated with linear regression and error indices. All three validation methods agreed when the behaviour was detected very accurately or inaccurately. Otherwise, in the intermediate cases, the confusion matrix method and error indices produced relatively concordant results, but the linear regression method often disagreed with them. Our study supports the use of confusion matrix analysis in validation since it is robust to any data distribution and type of relationship, it makes a stringent evaluation of validity, and it offers extra information on the type and sources of errors., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Pierre Robin sequence presents with distinct features of retrognathia and glossoptosis with or without cleft palate, which results in potentially serious, life-threatening respiratory obstruction and feeding complications. A multidisciplinary approach is required to manage such complex features. This article describes a novel technique for managing Pierre Robin sequence using a flexible feeding obturator. This study describes the dentoalveolar and palatal growth during the first months of life. Knowledge concerning this development is essential to avoid unwanted events such as mucosal ulcerations or restriction of growth when cleft-lip and palate (CLP) patients are treated. The results involve the generation of CAD/CAM CLP-feeding plates. Intraoral impressions from 32 healthy newborns were taken monthly for 5 months, supplemented by measurements of body weight, length, and occipital-frontal head circumference. The casts were digitalized, and two observers manually selected defined anatomical landmarks on virtual 3-D models. The distances between these landmarks were evaluted. Statistical analysis included an inter-rater agreement analysis and the determination of growth. In total, 213 casts were analyzed, with 65 models excluded because of inaccuracies in impression-taking or cast production. Overall longitudinal growth was 20.3%, whereas transversal growth reached a maximum of 21.1%. Vertical growth was 32.4% at the tuberal level. On the basis of these results, a semiautomated series of feeding plates allowing for monthly expansion could be generated. The acquired data serve as a useful reference for other pediatric and orthofacial investigations and treatments. One such application is the automated, fully virtual manufacture of CLP-feeding plates based on only one impression-taking. Our data reveal when caution is needed to prevent ulceration. The series of plates generated can minimize the time-consuming impression-taking and the production of further plaster models. The method of measurement is suitable for documentary purposes. Clin. Objective: To evaluate the acceptance, adherence, and feasibility of fortifier administration by finger feeder during breastfeeding and to determine weight, length, and head circumference gains after discharge for preterm infants., Design: Observational pilot study., Setting: A Level III NICU and its outpatient clinic in Vienna, Austria., Participants: Infants born at younger than 34 weeks gestation were included., Methods: Mothers were screened in a tertiary NICU and trained by certified lactation consultants to administer fortifier with a finger feeder during breastfeeding. Data on finger feeder use at home were collected by self-reported feeding diaries and questionnaires., Results: In total, data from 24 mother-infant dyads were analyzed. The acceptance rate was 67%. In 41.7%, more than 50% of meals were fortified. Mothers did not report problems in preparation, but 33% of the infants stopped latching on or drooled milk during finger feeder use., Conclusion: Use of a finger feeder to administer fortifier to preterm infants enabled mothers to exclusively breastfeed their infants and meet their nutritional needs. Group housing and computerized feeding of preweaned dairy calves is gaining popularity among dairy producers worldwide, yet disease incidence and detection remain a challenge in these systems. The aim of this prospective observational cohort study was to describe the relationship between morbidity and feeding behavior around the period of illness detection. Calves were enrolled upon entrance to the group pen on 10 farms in Minnesota (n = 4) and Virginia (n = 6) utilizing group housing and computerized feeding from February until October 2014. Morbidity and mortality events were recorded by the calf caregiver. Farms were visited either every week (Minnesota) or every other week (Virginia) to collect calf enrollment data, feeding behavior data, and health records. Daily average feeding behaviors (drinking speed, mL/min; daily consumption, L/d; rewarded visits to the feeder; and unrewarded visits to the feeder) were described both overall and for sick and healthy calf days. Multivariable mixed models were built to assess the differences in daily average feeding behaviors (drinking speed, daily consumption, rewarded visits, unrewarded visits) between matched sick and healthy calves around the time of an illness event (-10 to 10 d). Final models were controlled for calf age, region (Minnesota and Virginia), group size, disease diagnosis, the random effect of farm, and repeated measurements on calf. A stratified analysis was performed by both day from treatment event and disease diagnosis. We enrolled 1,052 calves representing 43,607 calf days over 9 mo. From these, 176 sick calves had a matched control and were carried forward to the matched pair analysis. Fifty-five percent of sick calves (97/176) were treated for diarrhea, 30% (53/176) were treated for pneumonia, and 15% (26/176) were treated for ill thrift. Sick calves drank 183 ± 27 mL/min (mean ± standard error) more slowly, drank 1.2 ± 0.6 L/d less, and had 3.1 ± 0.7 fewer unrewarded visits than control calves on the first day of treatment. These differences began up to 4 d before the calf was detected as sick, and persisted for 7 to 10 d after treatment. However, changes in feeding behaviors varied by disease diagnosed. Rewarded visits were not associated with morbidity status. Automated calf feeding systems are becoming more common on US dairy farms. The objective of this study was to evaluate calf health in these systems and to identify risk factors associated with adverse health outcomes on farms in the Upper Midwest United States. Over an 18-mo period on bimonthly farm visits to 38 farms, calves (n = 10,179) were scored for attitude, ear, eye, and nasal health, as well as evidence of diarrhea (hide dirtiness score of perianal region, underside of the tail, and tailhead). For all health score categories, a score of 0 represented an apparently healthy animal. Rectal temperatures were taken in calves scoring a ≥2 in any category, and those with a temperature >39.4°C were categorized as having a fever (n = 550). Associations were determined between farm-level variables and health scores to identify risk factors for higher (worse) scores. All health outcomes were associated with season of measurement, with fall and winter seasons increasing the odds of a high health score or detected fever. High bacterial counts measured in the milk or milk replacer were associated with increased odds for higher attitude and ear scores, and higher odds for calves having a detected fever. Higher peak milk allowance (L/d) was associated with lower hide dirtiness score, whereas a longer period of time (d) to reach peak milk allowance was associated with increased odds of higher scores for attitude, ear, eye, and hide dirtiness, as well as fever. Higher fat content in milk was associated with increased odds of high eye score. Less space per calf (m 2 /calf) was associated with higher ear and eye scores, whereas larger group sizes were associated with increased odds of higher nasal score and decreased odds of higher hide dirtiness score. Rectangular pen shape was associated with decreased odds of higher eye score. Absence of a positive pressure ventilation tube was associated with increased odds of having a calf detected with a fever. This study evaluated the influence of the initial weight, feeding period and temperature on weight gain and biological parameters of the non-parasitic phase of partially engorged Rhipicephalus sanguineus females that were artificially fed using plastic tips as feeding devices. The device did not alter the oviposition of the females or any other parameters evaluated. Furthermore, it was observed that the temperature of the feeding the group did not affect the weight gain and biology of ticks. This device has great potential for the development of studies on bioagent transmission because it provides higher intake of blood by ixodid ticks.

Background: Breastfeeding is the best way to provide ideal food for infants. However, there are many situations in which breastfeeding is unviable (maternal illness, hygiene problems, intravenous feeding requirement, storage). Safe, efficient, and nutritious products should be offered by the industry to mothers and healthcare professionals as an alternative., Objective: The present review aims to update the state of the art regarding the most innovative developments in infant feeding formulation and, the promising novel technologies that are being investigated to achieve a balance between the microbiological stability, organoleptic and nutritional value of baby food., Methods: The research lines included in the present systematic review are focused on both, the most innovative ingredients and emergent technologies applied increasing the offer of tailor-made nutritional profiled products with improved quality and safety., Results: According to the reviewed research and recently published patents the current emergence of a new generation of infant products is remarkable, with specific product lines aimed at infants at different stages of development and affected by several disorders (low-weight babies, premature neonates, allergenic patients), with special emphasis on the application of novel technologies (e.g. High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) and microencapsulation) as potential techniques to ensure the microbiological safety of developed products, and the improvement of their nutritional value, complementary to the addition of functional ingredients, such as omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, amino acids, prebiotics and probiotics, and medicinal herb supplementation (e.g. lemon balm, royal jelly)., Conclusion: The present research work provides a general view of recent advances in infant products processing and formulation focusing on the technological effects and quality/safety developments., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.org.)

Members of several genera of mites from the family Melicharidae (Mesostigmata) use hummingbirds as transport host to move from flower to flower, where they feed on pollen and nectar. The factors that influence hummingbird flower mite abundance on host plant flowers are not currently known. Here we tested whether hummingbird flower mite abundance on an artificial nectar source is determined by number of hummingbird visits, nectar energy content or species richness of visiting hummingbirds. We conducted experiments employing hummingbird feeders with sucrose solutions of low, medium, and high energy concentrations, placed in a xeric shrubland. In the first experiment, we recorded the number of visiting hummingbirds and the number of visiting hummingbird species, as well as the abundance of hummingbird flower mites on each feeder. Feeders with the highest sucrose concentration had the most hummingbird visits and the highest flower mite abundances; however, there was no significant effect of hummingbird species richness on mite abundance. In the second experiment, we recorded flower mite abundance on feeders after we standardized the number of hummingbird visits to them. Abundance of flower mites did not differ significantly between feeders when we controlled for hummingbird visits. Our results suggest that nectar energy concentration determines hummingbird visits, which in turn determines flower mite abundance in our feeders. Our results do not support the hypothesis that mites descend from hummingbird nostrils more on richer nectar sources; however, it does not preclude the possibility that flower mites select for nectar concentration at other spatial and temporal scales.

Large clefts in the lip and palate are common congenital anomalies. If the cleft palate is large enough, conventional feeding techniques may not provide proper nutrition for the infant. Feeding obturators will aid in the ability of the infant to attain suction and help the infant to feed adequately. It is necessary for the infant to have sustained weight gain prior to surgery to correct the cleft lip and/or palate. Fabrication of an infant feeding obturator is a simple technique using materials found in every dental office. An impression is made using modeling plastic impression compound. This impression is relined using irreversible hydrocolloid, and the resulting cast is used to enable a vacuum-formed obturator to be fabricated. The vacuum-formed obturator is smoothed and adjusted in the infant's mouth to ensure closure of the palate but allows pace posteriorly to allow normal breathing. The resulting obturator is well retained in the infant's mouth, allowing feeding.

Objective: To assess the association between early anthropometric measurements, device-assisted feeding, and early neurodevelopment in infants with complex congenital heart diseases (CHDs)., Study Design: Bayley Scales of Infant Development II were used to assess cognitive and motor skills in 72 infants with CHD at 6 and 12 months of age. Linear regression models were used to assess the association between mode of feeding and anthropometric measurements with neurodevelopment at 6 and 12 months of age., Results: Of the 72 infants enrolled in the study, 34 (47%) had single-ventricle physiology. The mean Mental Developmental Index (MDI) and Psychomotor Developmental Index (PDI) scores at 6 months of age were 92 ± 10 and 81 ± 14, respectively. At 12 months of age, the mean MDI and PDI scores were 94 ± 12 and 80 ± 16, respectively. Lower length-for-age z score (P < .01) and head circumference-for-age z score (P < .05) were independently associated with lower MDI at 6 months, and both increased hospital length of stay (P < .01) and lower length-for-age z score (P = .04) were associated independently with lower MDI at 12 months. Device-assisted feeding at 3 months (P = .04) and lower length-for-age z score (P < .05) were independently associated with lower PDI at 6 months. Both lower weight-for-age z score (P = .04) and lower length-for-age z score (P = .04) were associated independently with PDI at 12 months., Conclusion: Neonates with complex CHD who required device-assisted feeding and those with lower weight and length and head circumference z scores at 3 months were at risk for neurodevelopmental delay at 6 and 12 months of age., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. The oral feeding disorder is one of the important indicators for the high risk group of neurodevelopment delay. The procedure of oral feeding requires the coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing activities, and it is the most complex sensorimotor process for newborn infants. Premature infants often uneasily complete the procedure of oral feeding. However, the evaluation of the oral feeding disorders and severity are usually dependent on the subjective clinical experience of the physician. Monitoring the sucking-swallowing-breathing activities directly is difficult for preterm infants. In this study, a wireless monitoring system for oral-feeding evaluation of full term and preterm infants was proposed to objectively and quantitatively evaluate the coordination of suck-swallow-respiration function during oral feeding. Moreover, the ratios of the swallowing and breathing event numbers to the sucking event number were defined to evaluate the coordination of suck-swallow-respiration function during oral feeding. Finally, the system performance was validated and the coordination of suck-swallow-respiration function for full term and preterm infants during oral feeding was also investigated.

This experiment compared growth, physiological, and reproductive responses of beef heifers with (MI) or without (CON) access to a creep-feeder, as a manner to stimulate metabolic imprinting while nursing their dams. On day 0, 60 Angus × Hereford heifers were ranked by BW and age (140 ± 3 kg and 68±3 days), and assigned to pairs so all ranking criteria were similar between heifers within each pair. On day 1, pairs were randomly assigned to MI (n=15) or CON (n=15). From day 1 to 51, MI pairs and their dams were allocated to 15 drylot pens where heifers had ad libitum access to a corn-based supplement through a creep-feeder. The CON pairs and their dams were maintained in an adjacent single drylot pen. From day 52 to 111, treatments were managed as a single group on a semiarid range pasture. On day 111, heifers were weaned and allocated to two pastures (one pasture/treatment), receiving hay and a corn-based concentrate until day 326. Heifer BW was recorded before and at the end of the creep-feeding period (day 1 to 51), and on days 112 and 326. On days 0, 51, 111, 187, 261, and 325, jugular blood was collected and real-time ultrasonography for longissimus muscle depth and backfat thickness assessment was performed. Blood was also collected every 10 days from days 113 to 323 for puberty evaluation via plasma progesterone. Liver and subcutaneous fat biopsies were performed on days 51, 111, 261 and 325. Average daily gain was greater (P<0.01) for MI than CON from day 1 to 51, tended (P=0.09) to be greater for CON than MI from day 112 to 326, while BW on day 326 was similar between treatments. On day 51, MI had greater (P ⩽ 0.01) plasma IGF-I and glucose concentrations, as well as mRNA expression of hepatic pyruvate carboxylase and adipose fatty acid synthase than CON. On days 261 and 325, plasma insulin concentrations were greater (P ⩽ 0.03) in CON than MI. Mean mRNA expression of hepatic IGF-I and adipose peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma were greater (P ⩽ 0.05) in MI than CON. No treatment effects were detected for puberty attainment rate. In conclusion, supplementing nursing heifers via creep-feeding for 50 days altered physiological and biochemical variables suggestive of a metabolic imprinting effect, but did not hasten their puberty attainment.

A total of 240 Holstein bulls (121 ± 2.0 kg initial BW; 99 ± 1.0 d of age), from 2 consecutive fattening cycles, were randomly allocated in 1 of 6 pens and assigned to 1 of the 3 treatments consisting of different concentrate feeder designs: a control feeder with 4 feeding spaces (CF), a feeder with less concentrate capacity (CFL), and a single-space feeder with lateral protections (SF). Each pen had a straw feeder and a drinker. All animals were fed a high-concentrate diet for ad libitum intake. Concentrate consumption was recorded daily using a computerized feeder, straw consumption was recorded weekly, and BW was recorded every 14 d. Animal behavior was registered on d 1, 3, 5, 8, and 14 and every 28 d by scan sampling. Eating behavior at concentrate feeders was filmed on d 12, 125, and 206. On d 7, 120, and 204, samples of rumen contents were collected for measurement of pH and VFA and blood samples were obtained to analyze NEFA, haptoglobin, glucose, and insulin. Animals were slaughtered after 223 d, and HCW and lesions of the rumen wall and liver were recorded. The accumulative concentrate consumption per animal tended (P = 0.09) to be greater with CF than with CFL and SF. Also, CV of concentrate consumption was greater (P < 0.01) for SF than for CF or CFL. However, feeder design did not influence the other performance and carcass data. Also, no differences among treatments in rumen wall evaluation and liver abscesses were observed. At 7 and 204 d of study, SF bulls had greater (P < 0.05) rumen pH compared with CF and CFL bulls. On d 7, the acetate to propionate ratio from SF was greater (P < 0.05) than for CFL or CF. At d 7, NEFA of SF were greater (P < 0.05) compared with CF and CFL. Bulls fed with CF have the greatest (P < 0.01) concentrate disappearance velocity followed by bulls fed with CFL and finally by bulls fed with SF, and this was associated with different feeding behaviors. Bulls on SF spent more time (P < 0.05) eating straw and exhibited fewer (P < 0.05) displacements at concentrate feeder than CF and CFL bulls. The CFL bulls exhibited (P < 0.01) more attempted mounts and tended (P = 0.10) to exhibit more completed mounts than CF bulls. In conclusion, both alternative feeder designs (CFL and SF) are good strategies to reduce total concentrate consumption without impairing performance, rumen health, or animal welfare in Holstein bulls fed high-concentrate diets. However, at the beginning, there was evidence that animals fed using SF had problems with adaptation.

Background: Dietary practices in India often fail to provide adequate nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life., Objective: To explore the acceptability and utility of a low-cost and simple-to-use feeding toolkit consisting of a bowl with marks to indicate meal volume and frequency, a slotted spoon, and an illustrated counseling card to cue optimal dietary practices during the first 1,000 days., Methods: In Samastipur District, Bihar, India, we conducted 16 focus group discussions and 8 key informant interviews to determine community acceptability and obtain feedback on design and delivery of the feeding toolkit. We conducted 14 days of user testing with 20 pregnant women, 20 breastfeeding women 0 to 6 months postpartum, and 20 mothers with infants 6 to 18 months of age., Results: The toolkit, which is made of plastic, was well accepted by the community, although the communities recommended manufacturing the bowl and spoon in steel. The proportion of pregnant and breast-feeding women taking an extra portion of food per day increased from 0% to 100%, and the number of meals taken per day increased from two or three to three or four. For children 6 to 18 months of age, meal frequency, quantity of food consumed during meals, and thickness of the foods increased for all age groups. Children 6 to 8 months of age who had not yet initiated complementary feeding all initiated complementary feeding during the testing period., Conclusions: Simple feeding tools are culturally acceptable and can be appropriately used by families in Bihar, India, to improve dietary practices during the first 1,000 days of life. Research is needed to assess whether the tools promote dietary and nutritional improvements over and above counseling alone.

We describe a simple silicone membrane for in vitro feeding of Ixodes scapularis (Say), the main tick vector of Lyme borreliosis in the United States. Membranes are prepared using regenerated cellulose lens paper, which is coated with a controlled layer of silicone by submerging and removing the paper in a defined solution of silicone glue dissolved in toluene. Median engorged weight obtained by I. scapularis fed on defibrinated bovine blood using these membranes was 109 mg (32-198 mg). These ticks laid eggs in the laboratory and larvae hatched 6 wk later. This method simplifies artificial membranes for in vitro feeding of ixodid ticks, which have long required a considerable amount of skill and experience to prepare.

Background: Newborns with cleft palate have a distorted maxillary arch at birth. Depending upon the type of cleft, infants suffer from a variety of problems, many of which are related to feeding difficulties. Feeding these babies is an immediate concern because there is evidence of delayed growth of children with cleft lip and palate (CLCP) compared to normal infants. Many methods have been devised to overcome these problems, including the use of special bottles, nipples, and initial obturator therapy., Review: A Pub Med search was conducted using the following search terms: feeding interventions in cleft lip and palate, feeding plate/obturator in cleft palate. All the relevant articles were studied and the reference list of selected articles was also studied. Effects of different feeding interventions in infants with cleft palate with special emphasis on obturators, based on descriptive reports, expert opinions, and available data from clinical trials was reviewed., Results: The combination of search terms generated a list of 74 articles out of which 51 articles were excluded based on analyses of abstracts and full texts. Three additional publications were identified by the manual search. A total of 26 relevant articles were selected which included randomised controlled trials and descriptive studies on feeding interventions and obturators., Conclusion: A single intervention may not fulfil all feeding requirements of infants with CLCP. Combined use of different feeding interventions such as palatal obturator, Haberman feeder, and breast milk pump and lactation education may successfully meet the feeding needs of both mother and child.

Although captive bears are popular zoo attractions, they are known to exhibit high levels of repetitive behaviors (RBs). These behaviors have also made them particularly popular subjects for welfare research. To date, most research on ursid welfare has focused on various feeding methods that seek to increase time spent searching for, extracting, or consuming food. Prior research indicates an average of a 50% reduction in RBs when attempts are successful and, roughly, a 50% success rate across studies. This research focused on decreasing time spent in an RB while increasing the time spent active by increasing time spent searching for, extracting, and consuming food. The utility of timed, automated scatter feeders was examined for use with captive grizzly bears (Ursis arctos horribilis). Findings include a significant decrease in time spent in RB and a significant increase in time spent active while the feeders were in use. Further, the bears exhibited a wider range of behaviors and a greater use of their enclosure.

This prospective study conducted at the Hospital for the Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies aimed to compare the best technique - a cup or a spoon - for feeding children immediately after palatoplasty. We assessed 44 children and their caregivers during feeding every 4 hours; this generated 176 evaluations: 88 using a cup and 88 using a spoon. The Fisher exact test and the Mann-Whitney test were used for statistical analysis, with a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). When the spoon was used, the percentage of patients with food escaping through the labial commissure was lower (17%; p=0.024, the portion administrated was higher (12%; p=0.029), and coughing was less frequent (13%; p=0.026) compared with use of a cup. We conclude that using a spoon to administer food after palatoplasty is better than using a cup.

The immediate problem to be addressed in a new born with cleft lip and palate is the interference of feeding. Here we present a case of cleft lip and palate for which a feeding obturator was made to facilitate feeding till the defect could be surgically repaired. The design was modified by placing orthodontic wire on the acrylic plate for attaching the ties of mouth mask. Different precautionary measures undertaken while making impression for infant have also been described. Feeding appliance improved the sucking ability of the infant. The attachment of mouth-mask ties help in easy retrieval of the obturator intraorally in case of airway obstruction.

Various assistive robots for supporting the activities of daily living have been developed. However, not many of these have been introduced into the market because they were found to be impractical in actual scenarios. In this paper, we report on the usability test results of an assistive robot designed for self-feeding for people having disabilities, which includes those having spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, and traumatic brain injury. First, we present three versions of a novel self-feeding robot (KNRC self-feeding robot), which is suitable for use with Korean food, including sticky rice. These robots have been improved based on participatory action design over a period of three years. Next, we discuss the usability tests of the KNRC self-feeding robots. People with disabilities participated in comparative tests between the KNRC self-feeding robot and the commercialized product named My Spoon. The KNRC self-feeding robot showed positive results in relation to satisfaction and performance compared to the commercialized robot when users ate Korean food, including sticky rice.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different bail activation sequences in combination with feed availability on cow traffic and harvesting capacity in a novel prototype robotic rotary (RR; DeLaval AMR, Tumba, Sweden). The RR can milk up to 50 cows/h. However, in voluntary cow traffic systems, the number of cows presenting may be low at certain times of the day (or during certain months or seasons in seasonal calving systems). In these circumstances, the ratio of active bails to the number of cows available may be undesirably high, with consequential negative effects on system efficiency and milk quality (the RR does not flush individual units automatically after each milking). Activating only 50% of the bails may be a management strategy chosen to cope with periods of underutilization. Four treatments with a total activation of 50% of bails [8 bails with activation sequences of 8, 4, 2, or 1 consecutive bail(s)], with or without the presence of feed on the RR, were observed during sixteen 4-h observation periods after a system wash. The absence of feed resulted in a significant increase in the proportion of available bails remaining idle, but no significant differences were observed across the 4 bail activation sequences. Overall, the effect of bail activation sequence on cow traffic was negligible, but the sequences that had more consecutive bail activations resulted in more robot operations being conducted simultaneously and more milk being harvested per minute of robot operation time. A feeding function upon entry to the RR platform, in combination with bails activated sequentially, would lead to a more efficient use of the RR., (Copyright © 2013 American Dairy Science Association. Aedes aegypti, the main vector of dengue virus, requires a blood meal to produce eggs. Although live animals are still the main blood source for laboratory colonies, many artificial feeders are available. These feeders are also the best method for experimental oral infection of Ae. aegypti with Dengue viruses. However, most of them are expensive or laborious to construct. Based on principle of Rutledge-type feeder, a conventional conical tube, glycerol and Parafilm-M were used to develop a simple in-house feeder device. The blood feeding efficiency of this apparatus was compared to a live blood source, mice, and no significant differences (p = 0.1189) were observed between artificial-fed (51.3% of engorgement) and mice-fed groups (40.6%). Thus, an easy to assemble and cost-effective artificial feeder, designated "Glytube" was developed in this report. This simple and efficient feeding device can be built with common laboratory materials for research on Ae. aegypti.

Feeding is a family's biggest concerns when a child is born with cleft lip and/or palate. The goal for that child is to have as near normal feeding as possible. This report presents fabrication of feeding plates in two infants born with cleft lip and palate using two different materials.

A meta-analysis, using information from 45 experiments on growing-finishing pigs published in 39 manuscripts, was carried out to determine the simultaneous effects of the physical environment (space allowance, group size, flooring conditions, temperature, presence of enrichment), pig traits (initial body weight (BW) for each studied time interval, sex, genetics), feeder characteristics (water provision within the feeder, feeder design (individual/collective), feeder places/pig, presence of feeder protection) and feed characteristics (feed allowance (ad libitum/restricted), net energy content, crude protein (CP) content), as well as their potential interactions, on the feeding behaviour and performance of growing-finishing pigs. The detrimental effect of low temperature on performance was particularly evident for restricted-fed pigs (P < 0.05). At reduced feeder space allowance, a reduction in the percentage of time spent eating was predicted when increasing initial BW, whereas the opposite was predicted for larger feeder space allowances (P < 0.001). The reduction in visit duration to the feeder in higher BW groups became gradually more important with increasing feeder space allowance (P < 0.01), whereas the increase in the ingestion rate and average daily feed intake (ADFI) with increasing initial BW became smaller with increasing feeder space (P < 0.05). The model predicted a reduction in feed conversion ratio (FCR) with increasing group size (P < 0.05) and floor space allowance (P < 0.01) and on solid floors with or without bedding (P < 0.05). In comparison with other feeders, wet/dry feeders were associated with more frequent but shorter feeder visits (P < 0.05), higher ingestion rates (P < 0.001) and higher ADFI (P < 0.10). The use of protection within individual feeders increased the time spent feeding (P < 0.001), reduced the number of visits per day (P < 0.01), the ingestion rate (P < 0.001) and FCR (P < 0.01) in comparison with other feeder types. Sex modulated the effect of the number of feeder places/pig on FCR (P < 0.05), with a gradual reduction of FCR in entire males and females when increasing feeder space allowance. Genetics tended to modulate the effect of diets' CP content on FCR (P < 0.10). Overall, these results may contribute to the improvement of the welfare and performance of growing-finishing pigs by a better knowledge of the influence of the rearing environment and may help optimize the feeding strategies in current production systems.

An experiment was carried out to validate and select feed to be supplied to Pachydactylus turneri in a 30-day orbital flight of robotic spacecraft BION-M1. Larvae of two Tenebrionidae species, i.e., Tenebrio molitor and Zophobas were tested for survivability, tolerance of hunger and cold, ability to stick to and move along different surfaces. Tenebrio molitor was shown to be best suited. A special feeder that will sustain the beetle over 30 days was designed. The experiment provided new data about Tenebrionidae biology and suggested the feeding technology for a 2-month space experiment with Pachydactylus turneri.

We evaluated the effects of redistribution and swallow facilitation with a flipped spoon on packing in 2 children with a feeding disorder. For both participants, packing decreased when we implemented the flipped spoon treatment package. Mechanisms responsible for behavior change and areas of future research are discussed.

The investigators report the case of a 6-week-old girl with a cap-like congenital myopathy and frequent coughing during feeding. Neonatal swallowing assessments were performed with surface electromyography of the submental muscle group and nasal airflow during sucking and swallowing. A videofluoroscopic swallow study was performed separately. The registration of swallowing and breathing revealed a highly coordinated sequence of sucking, swallowing, and breathing. However, after a series of sucking and swallowing there was residue in the hypopharyngeal area, causing laryngeal penetration and coughing. Based on the findings, specific recommendations such as the use of a soft nipple, diminished suck-swallow sequences, and limited feeding time were made for this girl. These proved to be appropriate to prevent coughing as a signal of penetration or aspiration of milk during swallowing. This case highlights the profit of neonatal swallowing assessment, which can provide recommendations for safe oral feeding.

Purpose: This research examined the prevalence of the use of the sippy cup, as compared to the baby bottle, among children 1 to 4 years of age., Method: Using a population-based telephone surveillance survey in Ontario, caregivers of children 1 to 4 years of age were asked about their child's use of the sippy cup/baby bottle from the Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System Module: Early Childhood Tooth Decay., Results: Most caregivers reported that children 1 to 4 years of age were currently using the sippy cup (69.7%), with the proportion increasing to 94.4% when including children with past use of the sippy cup. Younger children were significantly more likely to use the sippy cup, and 10.8% of children 4 years of age continued to use the baby bottle. Diluted fruit juice was the most frequently used liquid in the sippy cup (58.2%). Most of the caregivers did not report the use of the sippy cup at night., Conclusion: Caregivers need education as to potential increases in exposure to sugared/acidic liquids through the use of the sippy cup. Parents may be reluctant to treat the feeding disorder of a chronically ill child who exhibits distressed behavior during feeding. In this study, we identified a child with chronic medical problems and a feeding disorder who cried during feedings. We introduced treatment components sequentially to address parental concerns about crying. First, we used a pacifier to reduce crying, and then we used a flipped spoon to increase mouth clean. The results showed that a sequential approach to treatment can be effective for children with complex medical and behavioral problems.

Problems with oral feeding occur in varying degrees in infants born with cleft lip/palate and/or craniofacial syndromes. The extent of clefting is associated with the severity of feeding problems, and if cleft lip/palate occurs in conjunction with a craniofacial syndrome, additional structural, airway, and neuromotor issues may be present. The infant's feeding and swallowing skills may be significantly impaired, characterized by inefficient oral feeding skills coupled with poor airway protection ability during swallowing. Inadequate airway protection during swallowing has serious implications for the infant's respiratory health as sequelae of chronic aspiration during feeding may include recurrent respiratory illness, pneumonia, and lung damage. Feeding difficulty in nonsyndromic and syndromic cleft lip/palate infants has been documented as source of considerable stress for parents and can have a potential negative effect on the parent-infant bonding process. Therefore, timely identification of feeding problems by the speech pathologist with subsequent intervention and modification in the feeding method is essential, along with provision of early feeding instruction to families. The objective of this article is to review expert opinion and available evidence regarding factors that influence feeding success and efficiency in infants with nonsyndromic and syndromic cleft lip/palate. The types of compensatory strategies or interventions that are effective in alleviation of feeding and swallowing difficulties will be described. In humans, cleft palate (CP) is one of the most common malformations. Although surgeons use palatoplasty to close CP defects in children, its consequences for subsequent facial growth have prompted investigations into other novel surgical alternatives. The animal models of CP used to evaluate new surgical treatments are frequently obtained by creating surgically induced clefts in adult dogs. This procedure has been ethically criticized due to its severity and questionable value as an animal model for human CP. Dogs born with a congenital CP would be much better for this purpose, provided they developed CP at a sufficient rate and could be fed. Up until now, feeding these pups carried the risk of aspiration pneumonia, while impeding normal suckling and chewing, and thus compromising orofacial growth. We developed a technique for feeding dog pups with CP from birth to the time of surgery using two old Spanish pointer dog pups bearing a complete CP. This dog strain develops CP in 15-20% of the offspring spontaneously. Custom-made feeding teats and palatal prostheses adapted to the pups' palates were made from thermoplastic plates. This feeding technique allowed lactation, eating and drinking in the pups with CP, with only sporadic rhinitis. To determine whether the use of this palatal prosthesis interferes with palatal growth, the palates of three littermate German shorthaired pointer pups without CP, either wearing or not wearing (controls) the prosthesis, were measured. The results showed that the permanent use of this prosthesis does not impede palatal growth in the pups.

Background: Cleft lip and cleft palate are common birth defects, affecting about one baby of every 700 born. Feeding these babies is an immediate concern and there is evidence of delay in growth of children with a cleft as compared to those without clefting. In an effort to combat reduced weight for height, a variety of advice and devices are recommended to aid feeding of babies with clefts., Objectives: This review aims to assess the effects of these feeding interventions in babies with cleft lip and/or palate on growth, development and parental satisfaction., Search Strategy: The following electronic databases were searched: the Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register (to 27 October 2010), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library 2010, Issue 4), MEDLINE via OVID (1950 to 27 October 2010), EMBASE via OVID (1980 to 27 October 2010), PsycINFO via OVID (1950 to 27 October 2010) and CINAHL via EBSCO (1980 to 27 October 2010). Attempts were made to identify both unpublished and ongoing studies. There was no restriction with regard to language of publication., Selection Criteria: Studies were included if they were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of feeding interventions for babies born with cleft lip, cleft palate or cleft lip and palate up to the age of 6 months (from term)., Data Collection and Analysis: Studies were assessed for relevance independently and in duplicate. All studies meeting the inclusion criteria were data extracted and assessed for validity independently by each member of the review team. Authors were contacted for clarification or missing information whenever possible., Main Results: Five RCTs with a total of 292 babies, were included in the review. Comparisons made within the RCTs were squeezable versus rigid feeding bottles (two studies), breastfeeding versus spoon-feeding (one study) and maxillary plate versus no plate (two studies). No statistically significant differences were shown for any of the primary outcomes when comparing bottle types, although squeezable bottles were less likely to require modification. No difference was shown for infants fitted with a maxillary plate compared to no plate. However, there was some evidence of an effect on weight at 6 weeks post-surgery in favour of breastfeeding when compared to spoon-feeding (mean difference 0.47; 95% confidence interval 0.20 to 0.74)., Authors' Conclusions: Squeezable bottles appear easier to use than rigid feeding bottles for babies born with clefts of the lip and/or palate, however, there is no evidence of a difference in growth outcomes between the bottle types. There is weak evidence that breastfeeding is better than spoon-feeding following surgery for cleft. There was no evidence to suggest that maxillary plates assist growth in babies with clefts of the palate. No evidence was found to assess the use of any types of maternal advice and/or support for these babies.

Introduction: We have reported that pica, kaolin ingestion behavior, correlates with nausea and vomiting in rats and the amount of kaolin intake is related to the severity of symptoms. However, the time course of the behavior is still unclear, because kaolin intake has been measured 24h after administration of an emetic stimulus. It is quite difficult and troublesome to determine kaolin intake manually at short time intervals without affecting the animal's behavior. In the present study, we investigated the time course of radiation or chemotherapeutic agent-induced pica in rats using an automatic feeding monitoring system (FDM700SW)., Methods: Rats received total body X-ray irradiation (4 Gy), or i.p. administration of cisplatin (6 mg/kg) or cyclophosphamide (120 mg/kg) with or without pretreatment of 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist, granisetron (0.1mg/kg, i.p.), then their kaolin and food intake were monitored hourly for 24h after the emetic stimuli., Results: Total body irradiation and i.p. injection of cisplatin or cyclophosphamide induced pica within 3h of the administration and the pica persisted for 12, 8 and 16 h after the emetic stimuli, respectively. Granisetron delayed the latency and inhibited the amount of kaolin intake. X-ray and chemotherapeutic agents induced anorexia in all rats, but anorexia was not recovered by pretreatment with granisetron., Discussion: These results suggested that both the latency and the duration of pica are similar to the clinical evidence of radiation or chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in human patients and this monitoring system is useful to evaluate the emetogenic potential of drugs and other medical intervention in preclinical studies., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. Cleft lip and palate is a common congenital defect of human being. If a child is born with congenital cleft palate defect, it is very painful to their parents. They are very much worried about the feeding of their baby. In this situation feeding aid prosthesis is the only treatment of choice. The feeding aid prosthesis helps not only feeding the baby but also help to develop proper articulation of speech. The article describes an advanced clinical and laboratory technique for the fabrication of a feeding aid prosthesis for new born baby. 9 infants who were suffering from congenital cleft lip and palate defect and a 9 month old baby with acquired palatal defect (acid-victim) were included in this study. All of them had treated with feeding aid prosthesis for feeding till palatoplasty was done. The feeding aid prosthesis was fabricated with acrylic resin and finally relined with soft lining materials. The impression of the palate was taken with heavy body silicon putty with the help of modeling wax custom tray. Data were collected before and after prosthesis on the basis of feeding time, amount of consumption of milk and growth pattern of the infants with their height and weight. Out of ten babies, 30% rejected the prostheses and 70% had accepted and used the prostheses until they were fit for palatoplasty. Growth of the babies was significantly improved who accepted the prosthesis than who rejected the prosthesis.

The objective of this article is to describe the utensils used throughout history to feed non breastfed infants. The method used was article review, reference search on the MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO databases from 1966 to 2007 and documental analysis based on data from the internet, encyclopedias, art and history books, and museums. Utensils manufactured in a variety of materials and shapes, depending on availability, purchasing power and culture have been used since early history to feed babies who for different reasons were not breastfed. Many objects coexisted at the same time and place, others at distant sites and times. New alternatives have been accepted without evidence to prove or point toward the benefits of the change. Some of these alternatives were adopted again, even if infant mortality was high at the time in which they were used at first. In the beginning of the 20th century, bottles became conic-cylindrical. Technology brought about progress as to improve hygiene and enable contamination control. Glass gave way to plastic, and rubber nipples to silicone ones, but the bottle as we know it today is still the same of a 100 years ago.

Although artificial feeding models for the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) most frequently use biological membranes consisting of day-old chick skin, there are ethical considerations associated with the use of skin. The few studies reported in the literature that have investigated the use of synthetic membranes to feed D. gallinae in vitro have reported limited success. The current study describes an investigation into the use of synthetic membranes made from either Nescofilm or rayon and silicone, used either alone or in combination with different feather or skin extracts, as well as the use of capillary tubes. In all, 12 different treatments were used, and the feeding rate of D. gallinae was compared to that of day-old chick skin. Allowing mites to feed on a membrane consisting of Nescofilm with a skin extract resulted in the highest proportion of mites feeding (32.3%), which was not significantly different to the feeding rate of mites on day-old chick skin (38.8%). This study confirms that synthetic membranes can be used to feed D. gallinae artificially. Further optimization of the membrane and mite storage conditions is still necessary, but the study demonstrates a proof of concept.
